Hi.

Speaker 0

Welcome back to Eat Your Crustpodcast.

Speaker 0

I'm Crystal.

Speaker 0

我是Jisoo。

I'm Jisoo.

Speaker 1

And I'm Jimmy.

Speaker 0

So this week, we felt the urge to talk about work.

Speaker 0

I feel like most people have to experience this at least a handful of times per week, and they can vary a lot from being really efficient, being really helpful, to sometimes just feeling like wasted time or not the best use of time.

Speaker 0

So we wanted to take today to talk about meetings at work, how you deal with them, what have you found to work for you, and just in general, your relationship with work meetings.

Speaker 0

First question I have for everyone is how many meetings do you typically have?

Speaker 0

How many meetings per day, and then how many meetings per week?

Speaker 1

Dude, meeting about meetings after a day of meetings.

Speaker 1

I I'm prepared, honestly, just to wait until the end and say thank you and just be I have probably around, like, four meetings per day.

Speaker 1

I guess five, if you count stand up.

Speaker 1

That stand up is like, you know, it's like fifteen minutes.

Speaker 1

It's a baby meeting.

Speaker 1

But yeah, around like four meetings per day.

Speaker 0

Dang.

Speaker 0

So you end up maybe with like 20 ish per week.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Times five.

Speaker 1

Down.

Speaker 2

Dude, that sounds like a lot because I was counting my meetings this week and I was like, this is kind of a meeting heavy week for me in my new company and I had 10 meetings.

Speaker 2

And seeing you say you have 20 is actually a lot.

Speaker 1

Oh my God.

Speaker 1

This week is probably even worse too because our fiscal year ends this week, you know, June.

Speaker 1

Our fiscal year is weird.

Speaker 1

I don't get the companies that end in the middle of summer, but ours is ending.

Speaker 1

So everyone's like pumping out more meetings, more meetings.

Speaker 1

Everyone just wants to meet to ask like favors and stuff.

Speaker 1

Oh, no.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I feel that.

Speaker 2

I think in my past job, it was similar where I would just dread meetings because every meeting would just birth more work.

Speaker 2

The worst part is sometimes it's okay because it'll be like an exchange, you know, like some decisions will be made.

Speaker 2

So some loose ends are tied and then you have, like, a new project to start on or something like that.

Speaker 2

But the times where those loose ends aren't tied, so there's, like, ongoing decisions that are just, like, put off, and then new projects are made, I'm like, I can't handle another meeting.

Speaker 1

It's a perpetual cycle that just never ends.

Speaker 1

Every single time it's like, Jimmy, you wanna take that action item and, you know, circle back around, like, next week?

Speaker 1

别了。

No.

Speaker 1

I don't wanna take any action items.

Speaker 0

I actually tend to not have too many meetings in my day to day.

Speaker 0

On a chill week, I can get away with as little as six meetings for the whole week.

Speaker 0

Yeah, so like maybe an average of one to two a day.

Speaker 0

I think I've never had more than, like, 15 in a week other than, like, events.

Speaker 1

Lucky you.

Speaker 1

Oh my god.

Speaker 1

Are you more of, like, an individual contributor?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Because my work is in design and it's kind of isolated, I don't have to, like, do as much of the business relations just, like, in terms of overall project management.

Speaker 0

It's just, like, they've kind of already project managed most of this.

Speaker 0

My part is just like, hey, can you do this like graphic or whatever?

Speaker 0

So then my meeting time with the other people is pretty minimal or really quick.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I guess that brings up the good point of depending on what your role is in a meeting, it can also feel very different.

Speaker 2

For example, I said I had about 10 meetings a week.

Speaker 2

A lot of them are like all hands.

Speaker 2

Some sort of like big group team meeting or something where I don't have to present.

Speaker 2

I just can like sit and like listen to information.

Speaker 2

Versus in my past role, I felt like a lot of my meetings I was leading.

Speaker 2

So then preparing to lead a meeting has a lot of homework in itself of like, you have to prep the agenda, send it out a couple of days prior.

Speaker 2

Oftentimes if you're doing meetings with leadership, have to like present a deck and stuff.

Speaker 2

Not only that, have to like assign someone to take notes or you yourself might be taking notes and then afterwards you send out like a recap.

Speaker 2

So going from the meetings that I used to have in my old job and then going to the meetings that I have now, even if they were the same number of meetings, I think it would just feel super different for me.

Speaker 0

I think also there's an aspect of meetings where it's up to you a little bit.

Speaker 0

I think I could totally have more meetings in my day to day if I wanted to set up time with the people that I work with, like, Hey, can you chat fast?

Speaker 0

I need to clarify this or ask a question.

Speaker 0

But I guess I'm just so much more used to pinging someone or even shooting an email.

Speaker 0

Because of that, I also cut down on my meetings.

Speaker 0

Because sometimes people will ping me and they'll be like, hey, do you have time right now to hop on a call?

Speaker 0

And I'm like, okay, I guess.

Speaker 1

I'm usually the pinger in that situation, also.

Speaker 1

That that probably explains why I have 20 meetings, honestly.

Speaker 1

A big fan of, like, chitchat, you know?

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

Well, people that I like at least, especially, like, one on one situations, you could probably chitchat a lot more and gossip a little bit and stuff.

Speaker 1

I'm usually the, hey.

Speaker 1

You wanna hop on a call?

Speaker 1

Or, hey.

Speaker 1

I'm gonna put something in your calendar.

Speaker 1

Accept it.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 0

You're like, there's no decline button.

Speaker 1

There's no decline button.

Speaker 1

Oh my god.

Speaker 1

Don't even dare hit, like, tentative or something.

Speaker 2

I mean, I think to an extent meetings like that are unavoidable sometimes.

Speaker 2

It's just so much faster to hop on a quick call and then like sort through something especially if it's like a more complex issue or if there's like a lot of different moving pieces or something.

Speaker 2

But for me, I have this whole thing of like not wanting a meeting to go over.

Speaker 2

So I can like do the chitchat in the beginning and then after it hits like 02:10 or something, I'll like cut it off and I'll be like okay anyways let's jump into the actual word.

Speaker 0

You're like agenda chitchat for five minutes.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

No more.

Speaker 0

That's me.

Speaker 2

I'm like that's enough.

Speaker 1

It's like a checklist.

Speaker 1

Like, okay.

Speaker 1

First, let's talk about Love Island.

Speaker 1

Honestly, I do like the chitchat too.

Speaker 1

It's but it's, like, sort of devious because I'll chitchat for the first, like, fifteen minutes of a thirty minute, and then I'll like, okay, let's get to work.

Speaker 1

And then the work is, you know, fast paced, like, get it done, get it done, get it done, you know?

Speaker 1

No ideation, nothing.

Speaker 1

Just like, this is what I need you to do and just do it.

Speaker 0

You don't give them time to, like, refute your tasks?

Speaker 1

不给。

No.

Speaker 1

That wastes time.

Speaker 1

没错。

That's for sure.

Speaker 1

So inefficient.

Speaker 2

It's an interesting split of a meeting block, like half chitchat.

Speaker 1

You gotta warm them up, you know?

Speaker 1

You gotta make them feel good and then fifteen minutes of just like, okay, you gotta do this, this, this, like, thank you.

Speaker 0

Honestly, see the benefits in that because sometimes when, say, you have a thirty minute meeting that only really needs, like, 10:15, if you finish early, sometimes someone will start blabbing or rambling about the project and you're like, okay.

Speaker 0

No.

Speaker 0

Can we just end this meeting now?

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

I'd much rather spend fifteen minutes talking about Love Island versus, like, you know, fifteen minutes being like, oh, like, maybe this would be better.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

别了。

No.

Speaker 2

And I'm, like, more likely to do something for you if we talk about, like, even something as simple as the weather in the beginning.

Speaker 2

Like, it just, like, humanizes you a little bit knowing, like, what you're up to or, like, your pets or any sort of like random topic that's outside of work.

Speaker 2

But I will say I make mental notes sometimes of people who always run over meetings.

Speaker 2

Like I'm not purposely trying to do it but I'll remember you know and my mental log will like automatically get updated and I'm like damn this person always goes over like maybe I shouldn't schedule this other meeting right after or like I'll like know to book the meeting room longer or something.

Speaker 1

Are you cutting off the chitchat then with those people?

Speaker 2

Or is it Run a stricter ship for that one.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Can you please shut up about the weather?

Speaker 1

Like, let's

Speaker 0

Kind of related to what you do, Jisoo, I also take note of the people who I work with who are super busy who oftentimes come late to our meetings because their previous meeting was running late or something like that.

Speaker 0

So then it's always a joy to be like, ah, yes.

Speaker 0

I have two more minutes until that person probably shows up.

Speaker 1

So true.

Speaker 1

They're always, like, consistent too about like, they're always late consistently late, but they're also, in my case at least, they're also like pretty consistent with how much time they're usually late, you know?

Speaker 1

Like my manager, minutes on the dot every time.

Speaker 1

Three Yeah.

Speaker 1

So I'll see the notification, you know, the Microsoft Teams notification.

Speaker 1

They're like, okay, great.

Speaker 1

Let me fill up our water.

Speaker 1

Let me go to the bathroom.

Speaker 0

So then aside from, like, recurring people, let's talk a little bit about recurring meetings.

Speaker 0

Like, I'm sure you all have Jimmy mentioned earlier, like, stand ups sometimes or team meetings.

Speaker 0

My first question is do you ever feel like you have almost a specific persona or role in that meeting?

Speaker 0

Because in my team meeting, I feel like I'm always the quiet, don't really talk too much, share very little person of the team.

Speaker 0

And then we also have some that I've noticed that are like one person who loves to give really long, thorough explanations, another person who is like the notetaker and like the busy mom, that kind of stuff.

Speaker 0

So what do you see in your meetings?

Speaker 1

I feel so bad for this notetaker person.

Speaker 1

They're known as the notetaker?

Speaker 1

That fucking sucks.

Speaker 0

A Actually, bad I helped out with the notetaking.

Speaker 2

So Oh, no.

Speaker 0

My role is actually so much easier though, but our note taker quietly took on the role herself.

Speaker 0

And then she just, like, writes a couple bullet points for each person when they share their, like, weekly updates.

Speaker 0

When it's her turn because she's talking, I'll take her notes.

Speaker 1

Dude, can I get this person's contact?

Speaker 1

Can I get, like, my company's headhunter to get her?

Speaker 1

This is crazy.

Speaker 0

等等。

Wait.

Speaker 0

不行。

No.

Speaker 0

We need her.

Speaker 2

Dude, it's not fun being the notetaker.

Speaker 2

I was like always the notetaker in the small and big meetings in my past job.

Speaker 2

And I started to feel like not like resentment, but kind of resentment of like, why is it always me?

Speaker 2

And then I would notice, right?

Speaker 2

Cause I would observe who the other note takers were and it was always women.

Speaker 2

And I was like, this is crazy.

Speaker 1

It's so interesting that you guys have just like unspoken note takers.

Speaker 1

For my immediate team, for our, monthly meetings, we'll have, like, a meeting minutes person per quarter.

Speaker 1

So we have, like, a wheel and we'll spin it.

Speaker 1

And then yeah.

Speaker 1

You know, it's always, like, the nice, like, sarcastic, like, ho ho.

Speaker 1

Congrats on the role.

Speaker 1

Everyone chuckles.

Speaker 2

I kinda like that.

Speaker 2

这真是

It's a

Speaker 0

good system.

Speaker 0

That is a pretty good system.

Speaker 1

Everyone's forced to be one, you know.

Speaker 1

That's why I feel bad for whoever just got stuck with that role.

Speaker 1

Can spin a wheel.

Speaker 2

Dude, note taking aside, sometimes the team meetings where you go around and share updates and you know how people will always be like, oh, it doesn't have to be like a work update.

Speaker 2

Like, can

Speaker 1

share whatever.

Speaker 1

Like, coming up

Speaker 2

with a story for that sometimes is like an actual task on my agenda.

Speaker 2

Like, I'm like, oh, come

Speaker 1

up with story for the two rounds.

Speaker 2

What have

Speaker 1

I been up to?

Speaker 0

等等。

Wait.

Speaker 0

Same.

Speaker 1

I definitely feel like the Monday stand ups were like, oh, you know, what'd you do for the weekend?

Speaker 1

I have to dilute how much fun I had over the weekend every time.

Speaker 1

You know, I can't go out, right, and be like, oh, yeah.

Speaker 1

So Friday, I partied all night.

Speaker 1

Saturday, oh, yeah.

Speaker 1

I also did that too.

Speaker 1

And then Sunday, I just watched television because I just I was incapacitated the entire day.

Speaker 1

I couldn't do anything.

Speaker 0

Dude, I am the opposite of Jimmy.

Speaker 0

People are like, oh my god.

Speaker 0

So how is everyone's weekend?

Speaker 0

And I was like, it was good.

Speaker 0

I just stayed home.

Speaker 1

Well, that's what I usually dilute to, so they probably think I'm a crystal.

Speaker 1

你

You

Speaker 2

know?

Speaker 2

Damn.

Speaker 1

Like, damn.

Speaker 1

This guy just doesn't really go out.

Speaker 0

Sometimes I'm like, I played golf over the weekend, and they're like, woah.

Speaker 0

You left the house?

Speaker 2

I feel like this is when it pays off to have really specific and, like, niche hobbies that you can talk about.

Speaker 2

Because even if you say, like, the smallest thing, even if you went, like, surfing for, like, ten minutes, know, it's, like, super cool.

Speaker 2

But I feel like I'm always saying, oh, I just like hung out with some friends.

Speaker 2

And then that's like it.

Speaker 2

Like, that's the Like,

Speaker 0

I cannot divulge any more than that.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

No questions, please.

Speaker 0

Dude, I actually dread the meetings though when I'm like, I have nothing to say this week.

Speaker 0

Like, I have no updates for you all.

Speaker 0

I'm like, what do I say?

Speaker 0

How do I skip this meeting?

Speaker 1

Honestly, I'm sad to admit this is like honestly a daily occurrence at this point where I don't have any updates.

Speaker 1

So I'll just, I'll like put it, put the volume like super high on my computer.

Speaker 1

So I'm like tuning in.

Speaker 1

But then since I work from home, my TV's like right there.

Speaker 1

I usually always have a show on binging and so I'll just be watching a show, you know, and then going back to your question, my persona, I'm the stay quiet the entire meeting and then at the very end, unmute.

Speaker 1

Thank you.

Speaker 1

And then just quickly leave.

Speaker 0

Same, same.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I agree.

Speaker 2

I mean, I feel like we're pretty young.

Speaker 2

I think the people who speak up a lot in meetings tend to be like more leadership or like executives or people who have been at the company for a long time.

Speaker 2

But I will say when people our age or like people at a similar level as us really speak up in especially those big meetings, raise your hand in like a 50 person meeting type of thing.

Speaker 2

I'm like, damn.

Speaker 2

Like, you're pretty cool.

Speaker 2

You're a boss.

Speaker 0

Dude, but I also wonder sometimes.

Speaker 0

I'm like, I feel like I don't share that much.

Speaker 0

Just like bits and pieces, like crumbs of my personal life, and I'm usually pretty quiet in meetings.

Speaker 0

I wonder if I give off, like, mysterious or just, like, boring.

Speaker 1

I could totally see that.

Speaker 1

I've known you for, like, what, twelve, thirteen years, and I Mhmm.

Speaker 1

That's a 100% true.

Speaker 1

That's I think you teeter the line well, Crust.

Speaker 1

I think you really did.

Speaker 1

I think

Speaker 0

Wow.

Speaker 0

Thanks.

Speaker 1

Very mysterious person.

Speaker 1

I feel like this is maybe the theme, you know, I'm like the opposite of you where I go from either I overshare or I just don't say anything at all in a meeting, you know, Either I'm the one driving it or I'm just not even in the car.

Speaker 2

That is also fitting actually.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 2

没错。

For sure.

Speaker 2

Damn, I'm trying to think if I have a role or persona.

Speaker 2

I mean, I think it's hard because I'm still getting settled into my new role and my new company.

Speaker 2

But if I think back to my past job where I was more established, I think I drove a lot of the meetings and I would kind of come prepared and whatnot.

Speaker 2

But I wouldn't say I enjoyed it.

Speaker 2

You know what I mean?

Speaker 2

Like, it wasn't something that I was happily doing.

Speaker 2

I think it kind of felt like a mental burden on me to an extent.

Speaker 2

So in my new job where I am kind of figuring out my role, I'm trying to think what I prefer Mhmm.

Speaker 2

Instead of, like, what I should be doing.

Speaker 0

So you get to rebrand.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

So for now, I'm nothing.

Speaker 2

But soon, I'll be something.

Speaker 0

Dude, maybe you could be, like, the jokester.

Speaker 0

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 2

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 2

I have to, like, bring that out, though.

Speaker 2

You know?

Speaker 2

Like, I have to, like, really pull it out.

Speaker 0

I definitely have a jokester in one of my team meetings.

Speaker 0

Meetings.

Speaker 0

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 0

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 1

It's not that fun.

Speaker 2

I feel like it's a mental burden, Jimmy.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

People would just expect to have fun with me and I hate it.

Speaker 1

Sometimes I don't want to be.

Speaker 1

You know how hard it look is like in the very beginning, right?

Speaker 1

I would talk a lot, you know?

Speaker 1

I was a jokester and stuff.

Speaker 1

You know, gradually I stopped Ray Caring and I'm just like watching.

Speaker 1

I keep saying Love Island, but really it's it's very true right now before it was anime.

Speaker 1

And I'm just, like, quiet because I just have my, you know, mic muted and I'm just, like, watching, you know?

Speaker 1

I'm not, like, engaged or anything, and peep people miss the jokes, you know?

Speaker 1

People miss the jokes.

Speaker 1

Like, word for word, my manager one time, she noticed, and she was like, hey, Jimmy.

Speaker 1

Like, I noticed you're pretty quiet.

Speaker 1

I'm like, oh, yeah.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

I'm just I I just wanna let other people talk.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

I just wanna let people, you know, share and stuff, get their voices out there.

Speaker 2

That's a good response.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Damn.

Speaker 2

I'm not gonna lie.

Speaker 2

Like, when the jokester is quiet during meetings, I get worried.

Speaker 2

I'm like, is something going on in this person's crystal light?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

You're like, are they okay?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Like wellness check?

Speaker 2

Maybe one day I'll get there.

Speaker 2

I think for now I'm the smile and nodder.

Speaker 2

Like, I, like, smile vigorously and I, like, nod a lot.

Speaker 2

Same.

Speaker 2

Same.

Speaker 1

不错。

Nice.

Speaker 1

Smile nodder.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

Every team needs that.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 0

Give me out my best facial expressions.

Speaker 0

I also use, like, the emojis.

Speaker 2

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 2

That's me I

Speaker 1

love the reacts.

Speaker 1

A little thumbs up here and there.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 2

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 2

The clapping one?

Speaker 1

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 1

You're the clapping.

Speaker 1

If I'm being honest, I'm the I'm the react spammer.

Speaker 1

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 1

It makes them feel good.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Like, one clap is good, but if you clap a lot, then they're like, oh my god.

Speaker 1

I really did do a good job.

Speaker 0

没错。

That's true.

Speaker 0

I also sometimes respond by typing because I don't wanna unmute and then talk and then make it accidentally talk over someone and then make it awkward and everyone's waiting for you to finish your thought.

Speaker 0

Just type and then everyone can read it and be like, cool.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

When I said to my manager, you know, that I want other people to, like, share more, That's actually kind of true, you know, and so I don't want to like interrupt someone.

Speaker 1

I'll just like put something in the chat and then once they finish their thought, usually people are like, oh, Jimmy, put something in the chat and they'll read it and be like, oh yeah, okay.

Speaker 1

Then I'll give a thumbs up afterward.

Speaker 2

Call both.

Speaker 2

I will say though, I've had times where I'm like, oh, you know, someone's talking, don't wanna talk over them.

Speaker 2

So I'll like put something in the chat And then the person talking will, like, stop because they see the chat come up.

Speaker 2

And they're like, oh, GC said this.

Speaker 2

And I'm like, fuck.

Speaker 2

Like, this is the

Speaker 1

exact opposite of what I was wanting.

Speaker 1

Oh my god.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

We're we're like, oh, hold on.

Speaker 1

Let me see what it's definitely like a line.

Speaker 1

I think I'm well settled into my new role of the chat emoji guy now.

Speaker 2

You're the keyboard warrior now.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

The keyboard warrior.

Speaker 1

Do you guys ever unmute just to laugh or no?

Speaker 0

Oh my god.

Speaker 0

Wait sometimes.

Speaker 2

I do do it as well.

Speaker 2

如果

If

Speaker 0

there's a chorus of laughter and it's safe to unmute and join

Speaker 1

You'll only do if you're, like, your laugh doesn't stand out.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

And, like, how that implies there's, like, a time where it's not safe to laugh.

Speaker 1

There's definitely, like, a group mentality, you know, because either someone bombs a joke or, like, they get a chorus of laughter.

Speaker 1

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

First, no one wants to be the guy who tells a joke, no one laughs.

Speaker 1

But also, no one wants to be the person who's the only one laughing.

Speaker 0

没错。

True.

Speaker 0

And sometimes when you laugh or, you know, talk over someone, it cuts the original audio off

Speaker 2

a little bit.

Speaker 0

It's safer to just like react or know that they're done talking and then unmuting to laugh a bit.

Speaker 0

Well, what I'll

Speaker 2

do nowadays is like I'll like laugh really hard visually, you know, like obviously laughing like but I'll stay muted so that they can keep talking.

Speaker 2

But I'm, like, encouraging them.

Speaker 2

Like, look.

Speaker 2

I'm laughing.

Speaker 0

Dude, we're all just mimes.

Speaker 0

Mimes on the video

Speaker 1

Give them a little visual thumbs up.

Speaker 0

等等。

Wait.

Speaker 0

I totally thumbs up.

Speaker 1

You thumbs

Speaker 0

up?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Sometimes I'll start the meeting off like, how's everyone feeling this week?

Speaker 0

And I'm like, thumbs up.

Speaker 0

Stay muted.

Speaker 0

等等。

Wait.

Speaker 0

That's so funny.

Speaker 0

你

You

Speaker 2

won't even unmute and be like, good.

Speaker 2

Like, that's, like, the standard.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

You're really the deep end, Crystal.

Speaker 1

I could tell you do it a lot too because when you did that, it it looked pretty legit.

Speaker 1

You even, like, had the right facial expression.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

It's practiced.

Speaker 2

It's rehearsed.

Speaker 2

Oh my god.

Speaker 2

Well, I guess aside from something like a TV for big meetings, do you guys put your camera on or is it by default camera off?

Speaker 0

Camera off muted.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Camera off muted.

Speaker 1

I'm not even in the room.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I feel like those big meetings, like, sometimes it's like orientation or maybe like a big all hands.

Speaker 0

Some of our, like, company wide all hands are so big that it's just streamed to the company.

Speaker 0

It's like not even a meeting.

Speaker 0

Right.

Speaker 0

So then it's just like on in the background.

Speaker 0

I'm like making breakfast or like getting the day started, camera off, muted, all of that.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

All hands is, like, a 100% breakfast time for me.

Speaker 1

Only I've ever not had an all hands where I'm not eating breakfast.

Speaker 2

I think it takes a special type of person to like have their camera on during big meetings.

Speaker 2

There will be times where I'll like sit in an all hands that's not a webinar so you can still see like the individual camera slots and stuff and people are actually like actively listening.

Speaker 2

I'm like damn, like you could really be camera off like laying on your bed doing something that you want but instead you chose to like show up with your camera on knowing that you'll be blown up on a big TV and like in the actual office and I'm like this is crazy.

Speaker 1

Freaking try hard, dude.

Speaker 0

They want the recognition.

Speaker 1

Oh my god.

Speaker 1

I saw you

Speaker 0

at the all hands right next to the big screen.

Speaker 1

I just love how intently you're, like, listening the entire time, you know.

Speaker 1

I'm sure the CEO really noticed.

Speaker 1

I mean, I don't know if it's the same with you guys, but I feel like it's usually always the salespeople that are, like, listening in while they're driving or it's leadership with their cameras on.

Speaker 1

Like, there's no one else.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

That's pretty true, I think.

Speaker 2

But it is funny sometimes where you can still kind of lose interest or, like, do other things with your camera on.

Speaker 2

And I think seeing that in a big meeting is so funny where you can see people's, like, lighting change because they're opening new windows and stuff, or they're, like, totally looking somewhere else.

Speaker 2

And I'm always just like, damn.

Speaker 2

That's hella funny.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I feel like sometimes when I have to do something, even if it's, like, leaning over and grabbing my phone being out of frame, I'm just gonna turn my camera off so people don't notice that distraction.

Speaker 0

But then that also makes me wonder sometimes.

Speaker 0

I'm like, what if I really need to go to the bathroom?

Speaker 0

Like, should I just mute camera off and go to the bathroom in the middle of a meeting?

Speaker 0

Or do I announce it to the meeting if it's, like, a smaller one?

Speaker 0

Or, like, what is the move here?

Speaker 1

Oh my god.

Speaker 1

You know, I struggled with that when I first joined the company.

Speaker 1

And then And I then I made the mistake of asking during the meeting if it was I asked permission to go to the bathroom.

Speaker 1

Oh, no.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I was like, hey.

Speaker 1

By the way, guys, hopefully, it's not you know, hopefully, I'm not interrupting anything, but can can I use the restroom?

Speaker 2

等等。

Wait.

Speaker 2

You unmuted and you said this out loud.

Speaker 1

Holy fuck.

Speaker 1

I forgot I forgot why it seemed like it was necessary at the time.

Speaker 1

And my manager's like, what the fuck did, like, the agents go?

Speaker 2

等等。

Wait.

Speaker 2

Did did people laugh?

Speaker 1

I don't think so.

Speaker 2

Oh my god.

Speaker 1

That's even worse.

Speaker 1

I know.

Speaker 1

Oh, they're probably talking shit while I was choking or something.

Speaker 1

It was so bad.

Speaker 1

It was like when I was like a fledgling, you know, like stars in the eyes.

Speaker 1

Like, I just wanted to be the best I could be.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I mean, it's a tough one.

Speaker 2

I have to be honest.

Speaker 2

There are times where I just, like, take my laptop into the bathroom.

Speaker 2

When I'm working from home, I'm like this must be done.

Speaker 2

Especially if someone's presenting something where I have to see it, I'm like, I guess I'll just take it in.

Speaker 2

But other times for like smaller meetings, I'll just type in the chat like BRB bathroom.

Speaker 2

And then I'll just go.

Speaker 0

To be honest, very surprisingly, I haven't encountered needing to go in the middle of a meeting yet.

Speaker 0

Ever?

Speaker 0

I I I fear the day.

Speaker 2

Woah.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Honestly, there's been times where I'm in the office taking a meeting and I just like get up and go to the bathroom.

Speaker 2

I'm shocked that has never happened to you before.

Speaker 2

Woah.

Speaker 0

The worst that's happened to me was like maybe there's a meeting in two minutes and I'm like, oh, I have to go to the bathroom really badly right now.

Speaker 0

And I'm like, hopefully I can make it.

Speaker 0

But it's shocking to me that, like, you just get up and leave to go to the bathroom.

Speaker 0

Are people not like, hey, what the fuck?

Speaker 0

Where is she going?

Speaker 2

I mean, no.

Speaker 2

I've seen plenty of other people go to the like, especially if there's a lot of back to back meetings.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

Mhmm.

Speaker 2

I don't always have time to, like, prep for a meeting Yeah.

Speaker 2

And use the restroom.

Speaker 0

Dude, what if some of those people who are always late, it's because they have a full day of back to backs and they just need to go to bathroom?

Speaker 1

Yeah, maybe.

Speaker 0

You seem skeptical.

Speaker 1

Listen, after that whole fiasco in the beginning of my career, I just go, I don't announce it.

Speaker 1

I'll type in the chat, nothing.

Speaker 1

In all seriousness, right, I don't think it's that big of a deal.

Speaker 1

You just leave and someone like asks you a question and you're not there, they'll, they'll just ask you later.

Speaker 1

And usually what happens is like when I'm in the meeting and they do it to someone else, they'll be like, Hey, Annie, do you know this?

Speaker 1

Oh, okay.

Speaker 1

I guess Annie is busy right now.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

That's it.

Speaker 2

I guess sometimes the thing I'll do too is like, I'll maybe PM my mentor or like a friend on the team or something.

Speaker 2

Something like I'm gonna go to the bathroom real quick let me know if I missed anything.

Speaker 2

That way if they do ask me something they could just be like oh I know she just went to the restroom but I'll like pass it on.

Speaker 2

So there's workarounds to our little bio breaks.

Speaker 2

Oh my god.

Speaker 2

That also?

Speaker 1

Bio break.

Speaker 1

Oh my god.

Speaker 2

Like, that is so peak beating lingo.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 1

I hate it.

Speaker 1

I refuse to say bio break.

Speaker 1

I vehemently refuse to.

Speaker 1

It's so stupid.

Speaker 1

Just say bathroom.

Speaker 1

Don't be embarrassed.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 2

There's bathroom, there's restroom, or bio break.

Speaker 2

But I feel like bio break is, like, the most commonly used phrase.

Speaker 1

Even just today too, my manager pinged me.

Speaker 1

She was like, hey.

Speaker 1

Do you have time to, chat?

Speaker 1

I'm like, yeah.

Speaker 1

Let me go to the bathroom real quick.

Speaker 1

And then it was like a thirty minute, like, shit.

Speaker 1

Oh my god.

Speaker 2

I'm speechless.

Speaker 1

And I did say that, you know, I just came back.

Speaker 1

I was like, alright, I'm back.

Speaker 1

She knows what happened.

Speaker 1

She knows what happened, but we're both adults here, you know?

Speaker 1

It's not like me saying BioBreak would have made it any better.

Speaker 0

Dude, whenever I hear BioBreak, I always think like biohazard.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Feel like if someone says BioBreak, you assume the worst.

Speaker 0

Well, I'll test this next time.

Speaker 0

During the middle of my team meeting, I'll just get up and leave, and I'll come back one minute later and be like, sorry.

Speaker 0

Was in the bathroom.

Speaker 0

But the thing is like

Speaker 1

apologize for your bio break.

Speaker 0

For my team meetings, always go into the office for them.

Speaker 0

So I'm just like imagining like me suddenly getting up and leaving.

Speaker 0

Kind of shocking, you know?

Speaker 0

It seems like I stormed out in anger or something.

Speaker 2

Oh my gosh, I mean I don't thinkI think people would just assume you're going to the restroom.

Speaker 2

Like what other reason?

Speaker 1

I don't know.

Speaker 1

Just so it's clear, I'm storming out angrily, okay?

Speaker 1

You like slam the door on Yeah.

Speaker 1

Your way

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Because I think using the bathroom when you're remote is a lot easier.

Speaker 0

I just turn the camera off, mute, and then go to the bathroom, then come back.

Speaker 0

Like, nothing happened.

Speaker 0

But when everyone's seeing you in a meeting room and you just suddenly get up and leave, I'm like, oh god, don't look at me.

Speaker 2

You do have to be perceived, you know, when you do that.

Speaker 2

But I've only really done that during bigger meetings, I guess, where there's maybe like 20 people in a meeting room.

Speaker 2

So it's a little bit less scary.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I guess all my meetings are remote.

Speaker 1

I only really work from home.

Speaker 1

And so my meeting culture is a lot easier to deal with.

Speaker 0

Well, aside from like these bigger meetings, I feel like low key one on one meetings are both the hardest and the easiest because to me, sometimes it's the hardest because I feel like I have to fill up the empty space or time a lot more.

Speaker 0

But it's also the easiest because I feel like it's easier to wrap up sometimes.

Speaker 0

I feel like I'm doing things wrong because whenever I have a meeting with my Skip or my boss, I always start and end the meeting within fifteen minutes.

Speaker 0

We never take up the full thirty minutes.

Speaker 0

And it got so bad that I changed my meeting with my Skip into a fifteen or ten minute meeting because I didn't want- I was like, damn.

Speaker 0

I can't just take up a whole extra fifteen minutes of her time on her calendar when we wrap things up in, like, ten minutes.

Speaker 0

So I'm curious to know if you all run your meetings for the full thirty minutes, like, what do you talk about?

Speaker 1

It's about life, dog.

Speaker 1

I will say my one on ones are usually with the PM, my manager, anyone else that I trap into a meeting.

Speaker 1

My manager, for instance, every time we have a meeting and she's, like, legit busy afterwards, then she'll state in the very beginning, like, hey.

Speaker 1

Jimmy,

Just so you know, Jimmy, we can't chitchat for that long.

Speaker 1

Wait, it's me.

Speaker 1

Wait, I was just about

Speaker 2

to say that's Jisoo.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And like, we'll, we'll usually do it.

Speaker 1

This is why she's probably three minutes late to everything because we'll still go over and then I'm the one that stops the meeting.

Speaker 1

Like I noticed it's like three minutes over and I'm like, hold up, manager.

Speaker 1

Don't you have like a meeting right now?

Speaker 1

Something like, oh shoot.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Sorry.

Speaker 1

There she will go.

Speaker 1

But yeah, usually we just chitchat a lot.

Speaker 2

So I actually do an hour long TV with my mentor and also with my manager and it's weekly.

Speaker 2

If I have to like divide it up, it's maybe like fifteen, twenty minutes of chitchat because it's an hour long, right?

Speaker 2

The rest is like work questions or sometimes I'll have like career questions of like, you know, logistical stuff like what do I need to do to get promoted or, you know, what are some projects that you want me to work on?

Speaker 2

Things like that.

Speaker 2

So I feel like I always have a lot of questions to ask about work and then that fills up like most of the time.

Speaker 2

Even if it's not questions, like it's a lot of status updates too on like projects of like, here's all the stuff that I did, you know, is there anything else that you need me to take on?

Speaker 2

Just like a summary of what I did behind the projects and whatnot.

Speaker 2

So I feel like there's always a good amount to talk about.

Speaker 0

But that takes like forty five minutes.

Speaker 1

Lot of questions.

Speaker 0

How about of updates?

Speaker 2

If I'm like working on one project and I need to like validate the financial model I'm using or something, it's not like a true false question, right?

Speaker 2

It's like, oh, here's like the background, here's the variables I'm using, blah, blah, blah.

Speaker 2

So then I feel like that, like each thing takes like ten minutes.

Speaker 2

And if I'm having like five or six ad hocs, that's like a good chunk already.

Speaker 1

It takes five minutes to be like, can you see my screen?

Speaker 0

Dude, can we do some role play right now?

Speaker 0

Can can can I ask you some questions?

Speaker 1

And then you can answer

Speaker 0

them as if you're in a meeting a one on one.

Speaker 0

I need to see this in action.

Speaker 1

Alright.

Speaker 1

Let me just go ahead

Speaker 2

and Jimmy turned his camera off and mute it.

Speaker 0

So everyone, how's your week going?

Speaker 2

Good.

Speaker 1

It's going good.

Speaker 2

Account for the lag.

Speaker 0

Alright, well let's start off with Jisoo.

Speaker 0

Let me know how your projects are going this week.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

So this week I've been really focusing on tackling a lot of like ad hoc requests that have come in from the sales team.

Speaker 2

So this person sent in this, I've been working on this And then this other person sent in this request and that really required me to, like, go into system a to, like, dig up stuff.

Speaker 2

And I realized that system a doesn't have variable b.

Speaker 2

So then I had to go into system B and then like merge the data together to work on financial model A.

Speaker 2

So that's what I've been focusing on.

Speaker 2

Sandra,

I have some questions for you after, Sandra, if we could like dive into it together.

Speaker 2

But, that's mostly it.

Speaker 0

Woah.

Speaker 0

Off the off the role play for a second.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

哇

Wow.

Speaker 0

You give so many details.

Speaker 0

Maybe I should add that to my repertoire.

Speaker 2

等一下

Wait.

Speaker 2

Jimmy's still having his raw muted is sending me.

Speaker 0

好

Alright.

Speaker 0

Back to the role play.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

Oh, that sounds really good, Jisoo.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

We could connect afterwards.

Speaker 0

Just shoot me a ping or we could connect offline or put some time in my calendar.

Speaker 0

好的,Jimmy。

Alright, Jimmy.

Speaker 0

How about you?

Speaker 0

Any any updates for this week?

Speaker 1

No updates.

Speaker 2

Not even a thank

Speaker 1

realistic.

Speaker 0

No updates is crazy.

Speaker 2

Oh my god.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

I see now.

Speaker 0

Jisoo,

Jisoo, you give very good and, like, exciting detail.

Speaker 2

Well, it's funny that you say that because when we do, like, our, like, team stand up or whatever, I feel like I talk the least.

Speaker 2

Oh, wow.

Speaker 2

I always felt like I was giving really I don't know, not brief, but maybe I just didn't have a lot to talk about or something.

Speaker 2

I'm shocked that you're like, Oh, you say so much.

Speaker 0

Dude, I say I say something between Jimmy and you.

Speaker 1

It's like black and white.

Speaker 1

When you were going, Jisoo, I felt intimidated.

Speaker 1

I felt What the fuck?

Speaker 1

I felt like a a slacker with my camera off.

Speaker 1

Oh, dude.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I mean, this is only when I have updates.

Speaker 2

Like, sometimes I don't have an update.

Speaker 2

So I'll just be like, I don't I don't have much

Speaker 0

to say.

Speaker 0

等等。

Wait.

Speaker 0

So if you have no updates and you have an hour long meeting with your manager, are you just like, oh, like, not much is going on.

Speaker 0

We can end early today?

Speaker 2

You know how we just did, like, a group stand up?

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Like in my one on one, I go even more in-depth.

Speaker 2

Like we fucking like go through my projects and I'm like, can you like look at these or like, here's the thing that I added to this type of report.

Speaker 2

Like, do you think this would be useful?

Speaker 2

I'll make recommendations or like, I don't know.

Speaker 2

Interesting.

Speaker 2

I think I almost always do take the full hour.

Speaker 2

Although there are times where we'll only end in like thirty minutes and we'll be like, we'll catch up next time.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

I feel like okay.

Speaker 0

Because my, like, team meeting updates are very similar with my manager because I'm like, oh, I said, like, everything I really needed to say yesterday at our team So my updates go something like, Yeah, I have like project A and it's going well, it's on track.

Speaker 0

Project B is also looking good.

Speaker 0

The stakeholder is pretty excited about it.

Speaker 0

And project C we just wrapped up and they're really happy about it.

Speaker 2

Interesting.

Speaker 2

I guess I see my TBs as like I mean, now I'm kind of more so learning or like trying to understand or like take on more responsibilities.

Speaker 2

So I think that's a big part of it.

Speaker 2

But in my past life, because I was at a managerial role, I was having TBs with my boss who was like a VP, right?

Speaker 2

I needed my VP to know stuff that I knew so that in his meetings with leadership, he could like talk about the things that our team was doing.

Speaker 2

So then I think that in itself like took a long time too.

Speaker 2

The only times where I didn't have a ton to update on was like weeks where I was like really slacking or something because I feel like with my personality, if I did something like I'll tell you about it.

Speaker 2

So if I don't have updates, then maybe I didn't do much that week.

Speaker 2

Just the way I approach meetings.

Speaker 0

I see.

Speaker 0

I see.

Speaker 0

How about you, Jimmy?

Speaker 0

Do you, like, go in-depth into your projects with your manager or are you just kind of like me or like, alright, yeah, these are going well, on track?

Speaker 1

There's like a handful of projects I actually care about and I'll go like in-depth on it.

Speaker 1

But most of the time, yeah, the updates, they already know what's going on.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

Especially if they're like asking for an update, then they're probably already, like, you know, either tagged in the email thread or, you know, we're already talking about it.

Speaker 1

Aside from our one zero one, we're just like, hey, do you have time to chat about this?

Speaker 1

For those, usually, an update isn't really necessary.

Speaker 1

But, yeah, I guess for my projects, I'll have updates, and I'll let her know, like, how that business unit is doing, the latest news and whatnot.

Speaker 1

And then also, I'll I'll be like, look at look at the deck that I made, and then you'll have all your answer.

Speaker 1

You're invited to the meeting if you wanna join.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I guess maybe it's also, like, the way my my smaller team is structured because we have this project tracker that everyone can see.

Speaker 0

And my manager sees everything that comes in and then she assigns it and stuff.

Speaker 0

So it's like, you can see the same description that I see.

Speaker 0

So there's no questions.

Speaker 0

Everything is pretty straightforward.

Speaker 0

I'm working through it kinda thing.

Speaker 0

But I feel like I want to take up more time instead of, like, finishing it so quickly.

Speaker 0

Because sometimes the thought is almost like, oh, maybe I, like, don't even leave an impression in this person's day.

Speaker 1

Damn.

Speaker 2

It just broke Jimmy's heart.

Speaker 2

I visibly saw it break.

Speaker 0

Because sometimes my thought is like, they have no idea what I'm working on because I described it so quickly and simply.

Speaker 0

And so instead of describing something so quickly and like, skip over me quickly, it's like a, oh, I feel like I understand more of what's happening here, so I feel almost like I have a bigger stake in knowing if this thing goes to completion or whatever.

Speaker 2

I mean, you never know because as I'm talking to you guys, I feel like we're on like a spectrum of like our meeting philosophies.

Speaker 2

I know there's execs out there who are like, my god.

Speaker 2

Thank god this person is taking up like an efficient amount of time in my meeting schedule that's already so busy.

Speaker 2

So I feel like there's a happy medium in here somewhere of like, I cut down my meetings and then you like inflate yours a little bit and like Jimmy turns his camera on or something and we like all happily meet somewhere in the middle of the Venn diagram.

Speaker 2

But you know, I think being brief and like concise isn't inherently like a bad thing.

Speaker 0

Hopefully.

Speaker 1

I think as long as you get the job done.

Speaker 1

I mean, Jisoo said actually reminds me of like a funny story where I have product watch, which is, a really regular thing for me.

Speaker 1

I have to make a deck for it.

Speaker 1

It used to be every two weeks.

Speaker 1

Now it's every month.

Speaker 1

And then one month, I just forgot to do it.

Speaker 1

And like an hour before the meeting, I was trying like really hard to like do it.

Speaker 1

I was only able, it's like two business units that I have to report on.

Speaker 1

And I was only able to do one business unit.

Speaker 1

And I remember specifically in that meeting, I called on people that I knew took a lot of time.

Speaker 1

And so I would, like, call them and be like, what do think about this, Bill?

Speaker 2

You're like, that's twenty minutes right there.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I was like, yes, Bill.

Speaker 1

Keep going.

Speaker 0

You're like, oh, could you elaborate on that?

Speaker 1

I didn't quite get the the part that you just Oh my god.

Speaker 1

I mean, hopefully, it wasn't that obvious because it's, like, Bill would be talking and then Ryan, I know he has questions about it.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

And so, like, Ryan, what what do you think about that?

Speaker 1

And then we didn't even get through the first business unit.

Speaker 1

And I was like, oh, thank god.

Speaker 0

That is so funny.

Speaker 1

It was the first time after the meeting where I specifically didn't say, okay, I'll send the slide deck to you guys afterwards, you know?

Speaker 0

That's genius though.

Speaker 1

It was pretty nice.

Speaker 1

It's the directors, by the way.

Speaker 1

The the directors usually like talking a lot.

Speaker 1

I noticed whenever I'm leading these meetings, they always latch onto one thing and then they just wanna spend the entire time talking about it, you know?

Speaker 0

Dude, yes, I've noticed that too.

Speaker 0

It's like this one number or like this one percentage.

Speaker 0

They're like, where did you get this number?

Speaker 0

And then suddenly that question becomes like a thirty minute meeting.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 1

The whole entire exactly.

Speaker 1

So you just, like, slip if if you don't finish your slides, you know, then just, like, slip in, like, some inflammatory number that, you know, is gonna get everyone stirred up.

Speaker 2

Here are the real workplace tips.

Speaker 2

I like the strategy.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

This month, we've had very like, an uptick in negative VOCs.

Speaker 1

They're like, oh, shit.

Speaker 0

They're like, I heard negative.

Speaker 1

Like, yeah, Genentech was really upset about this.

Speaker 1

And I'm like, oh.

Speaker 2

Well, it's so funny to talk through this kind of stuff because these are things that happen in a meeting that aren't always positive.

Speaker 2

For example, someone taking one number, running with it, and taking up, like, your entire meeting time or not feeling like you're super prepared for a meeting.

Speaker 2

But I think talking to you guys, it makes me realize that we can use these things that happen in meetings to our benefit and to our advantage.

Speaker 2
