Hi, welcome back to Eat Your Crust Podcast.
我是Jeesoo。
I'm Jeesoo.
我是Crystal。
And I'm Crystal.
So remember when I had that arc of learning Gen Z slang?
记得。
Yes.
And actually, truly, I feel like before that I was pretty boomer.
I think we spent a year and a half or two years just talking about slang and keeping updated.
I actually feel like I evolved.
I do agree.
I feel like you've become more Gen Z or more integrated into that world in the last few-
I know what people are talking about.
I actually wonder now, though, because when we started talking more about slang, slang itself didn't start going crazy yet.
I didn't feel too disconnected from it at that point.
But I knew in the future I would be.
So now I just wonder if I had never done that, would I have ever known?
I guess it depends on how much content you would have consumed.
Because even if we don't use slang in our daily lives or talk to people who use a lot of slang, I feel like we pick up so much of it from TikTok or watching streamers and stuff like that.
So maybe you wouldn't have been at the level you are now- ... but I feel like you could've gotten by.
Okay, that is true.
But I did download TikTok literally to study slang.
Well, we haven't talked about our updated list of slang words or view on slang in a long time after we stopped doing our Gen Z word series.
So I think it's a good time for us to check in, see how we're feeling, see if any of the old words are dead or alive.
Oh my God.
I'm thankful for this because I feel like I can keep up.
And also what's crazy is some of the things that we talked about before that were maybe still really niche are super popular now.
I feel like Jeesoo, you're like indie slang.
I'm like, I knew this before it became popular-
... before it was mainstream.
The big one that I noticed was mogging.
You brought that shit up two years ago.
And now it's all over the place.
Dude, mogging is so good.
It's like the perfect one-liner joke.
I heard it out in the wild recently.
What was the context?
A group of us were doing exercises/drills.
And then there was this one younger person who was like, "Oh, shit, so-and-so is up.
They're about to mog us all."
And that person did mog us all.
Oh my God.
I had something similar.
We went golfing, and we were at a par three like, "Oh, let's do closest to the pin."
It's like 130 yards or something, so I pull out one of my woods, and then this one guy in our group pulls out like a pitching wedge, and I was like-
Oh, no
... "Oh, mogged."
"Club mogged."
Okay, I feel like also I was inspired for us to talk about slang again because I've actually been in situations where I've been with younger people around, and I'm like, "Whoa."
Like I know what's going on.
Not to make myself sound really old, but...
I know, I'm like, there can't be more than five years age difference between you and these people.
Wait, no, there's one who's like a teenager.
Oh, I see, okay.
Need like a full-on decoder or something- ... to talk to teens.
Okay, but let's talk about some new words or old words that have been really popular lately.
I'm going to be honest, I haven't really been on TikTok recently though, so I might be a little behind.
Let's talk about one that's more of a phrase, but I think people use this a lot on TikTok to talk about celebrities.
Rent was due.
哦~
Ooh.
Okay, yes, I know this one.
Honestly, I think this one's really funny, and it's like an evolution of ate.
确实。
True.
But I do feel like people still use ate, but it's also evolved.
Now it's like, "I can't lie, this person ate everyone up," or something like that.
Yeah, or it's like ate down, and I'm like, "Whoa."
Wait, I've never seen ate down.
Oh, really?
I feel like ate down is just like putting the emphasis on ate.
哦。
Oh.
But I do like rent was due.
I think that one's just, it's easy to understand, and the point gets across, and you're like, "Yeah, rent fucking was due."
Pay this person.
It's such a roundabout way of being like, this person is doing really well.
Or like this person killed it.
I actually said this phrase out loud to my boyfriend, and I was like, "Do you know what this means when I say this?"
And he was like, "Not really."
But also there was no context.
I was just like, "Rent was due."
There's no comment over a video or anything.
He's just like, "What?"
He's like, "It was?"
"Did we pay it?"
I feel like it's been a steady classic.
I think people have always used it about celebrities, but I rarely hear it out in the wild for some reason.
Yeah, I feel like I only really see it as comments on videos where people-
... do something really well.
I feel like it's always like dancing or something.
I don't know enough dancers in real life.
I like it.
It's a nice one.
I would never say it, but I like reading it.
Okay, I'm trying to think.
One of my favorite ones recently, and I can't remember if this was in our series or not-
... but I think chopped is so funny.
Oh my God.
For anyone who doesn't know what it means, it mainly means ugly, and people usually use it in like a self-derogatory way, like, "Oh, I'm feeling really chopped today," or like, "I woke up this morning, and my hair was so chopped."
Or my favorite combo is when something mildly inconvenient happens, and then people are like, "Oh, so I'm chopped and unk."
No. Wait, I'm about to make that my new catchphrase.
I'm chopped and unk.
Yeah, that one's a classic.
And chopped can be pretty versatile.
We're saying that it means ugly, mostly in a self-derogatory way, but I feel like people use chopped in a pretty general use of the term as well.
I think chopped can be used not just about person.
I think I've seen people be like, "Oh, that build is chopped."
Dude, you know what's crazy, though?
I just looked this word up on Urban Dictionary.
Oh, my God.
And there's an entry from 2004-
哦
Oh
... with the same definition.
So is this reheating nachos?
Yeah, I guess so.
We're reheating early 2000s nachos, bro.
Okay, but I do feel like, I think we said this last time, too, sometimes slang is just cyclical.
Even if it's not the exact same word, certain words will become slang words or will get a slang counterpart.
Yes, that's true.
Or I feel like sometimes it starts out as a regional word, and then slowly as people move across the US or something, it just becomes more and more common.
I do have another word that I want us to talk about, but I don't know if this is just a phrase, or is it actually slang beyond this one tiny niche that I always see it in?
So you know lately how Nicole Kidman has been popping off?
One of the people who's also obsessed with her is Adela.
She has the whole Nicole Kidman song.
So the lore there, from my understanding, is that Adela actually was almost a part of Cat's Eye, but she's not, and she's just her own thing now.
Sorry, this whole roundabout thing ... is to get to the phrase, average blank.
Whenever I see Cat's Eye, I always see people parroting their music about how it's just gibberish.
哦。
Oh.
And then all the comments are like, "Honestly, average Cat's Eye song."
"This could be real."
Okay, I feel like that is slang, but kind of like a joke format.
Because I'll see it in a context of, say there's a really nice neighborhood in the Bay Area, like Hillsborough, with huge homes.
Each home is like 5,000 square feet.
And then sometimes people will post, "House tour of my Hillsborough home," and it's massive and mansion-like, and then the comments will be like, "Oh, poorest family in Hillsborough."
哦。
Oh.
You know?
It's such a good, versatile format.
Yeah, I just think the Cat's Eye context always cracks me up, though.
I don't really listen to Cat's Eye, and I kept getting them on my feed, I guess.
So I'm like, "Is it really like this?"
So I looked them up, and I'm like, "Wait, it is."
Dude, it's actually like sometimes I think about how much slang or online trends just straight up come from fandoms.
I think we talked about, in previous episodes, how a lot of slang or online trends come from streamers, but even the niche K-pop fandoms or TV show fandoms will also generate huge waves of slang or whatever.
确实。
True.
I also haven't really been watching streams lately, so dude, I think I'm falling off.
I'm becoming unk.
Okay, I have a question, though.
So remember last time we were talking about slang and stuff-
... you had a slay issue?
What was my slay issue?
You just kept saying slay.
Oh, yes.
Dude, it actually never went away.
Wait, what?
I actually still say it, and I know it makes me look so unk, but I just can't stop.
Wait, I don't think I've heard you say slay recently, though.
Oh, really?
I guess I say it more at...
Honestly, I say it a lot at work.
But do people say it back to you at work?
I think that's the important part.
No, but people will laugh usually.
Oh, okay.
In a friendly way.
In a, "Wow, you really just said that" way.
No.
Dude, I don't know.
I feel like slay is just one of those things that it was so iconic to me at a point in time.
So when I'm in my deathbed, and I have dementia or something, and I can only remember bits and pieces of my life, I'm just going to be like, "Slay, slay."
They're gonna be like, "We're giving you more morphine.
It's your final day."
You're like, "Slay."
I'm like, "Slay, ate down."
Okay, I was going to ask, do you have a new favorite slang phrase or term besides slay?
But it sounds like slay is near and dear to your heart still.
Slay
Slay is just so good.
It's generally positive-
... but it has a hint of ironic-
... because it's not a cool, trendy, popular term anymore, right?
So I feel like I'm leaning into, like, I know this is old, but it's still kind of funny.
Dude, maybe you will single-handedly bring it back.
Dude, yeah.
I mean, if fucking chopped came back from March of 2004, I think slay will have a comeback.
Okay.
We'll make it happen.
I also think slay feels a little bit more natural than ate-
... to say out loud.
I don't know why.
Ate。
Dude, it's the hard T. Ate.
Ate。
Ate.
It's a little aggressive.
Maybe it became really trendy when I already felt too old.
哦。
Oh.
You know?
But slay was kind of trendy when we were still slightly young.
So ate feels like I'm cosplaying.
I'm like, "Hello, fellow youth."
Wait, I actually think it's really funny when people our age say ate.
Funny bad?
No, no, no. I don't know.
It's just extra funny.
It's funnier than when young people say it.
哦。
Oh.
I've explained before that my TikTok, it leans millennial.
And so therefore, a lot of the comments on the content I get are also more millennial, or maybe it's older end of Gen Z. So sometimes it's just amongst the sea of more millennial comments, there's like a, "Oh yeah, this person really ate everyone up."
And I'm like- ... "Why is this so funny?"
It just stands out more.
Maybe I'll come around to eight.
I do like seeing the variations.
I saw a TikTok recently that was like, "Romans when they go to Pilates classes," and then it's a Roman Pilates instructor being like, "Okay, you're going to hold this lunge for V, IV, III, II, I," and then, "Pulse, pulse."
And then the comment was like, "You VII-ed that."
Oh my God.
Actually, maybe eight is fun just because of the number as well, and the higher level of comedy it can reach.
确实。
That's true.
It's pretty versatile.
It could be a word that has more longevity than we expect.
I think we talked about the term cooked before.
对。
Yes.
And how there's a multitude of different slang definitions for that.
Cooked could be like, "Oh, you're cooking something up," like you're cheffing something up in a good way.
Or it could be like, "Oh, you're cooked."
Like, you're screwed, things will be disastrous, kind of way.
And I feel like both meanings are still alive and well.
对。
True.
And it's been years.
People haven't been saying cooked for so long.
I wonder if it's because, at least in my impression, cooked kind of originates from sports.
And because sports is just always happening, it has a certain level of longevity.
确实。
That's true.
I guess if it's a sports term, it's generally just more mainstream already.
Yeah, I feel like slang that comes from sports tends to stay longer, minus the dances.
The dances?
Well, the only dance I can think of is the Griddy back in the day.
Dude, Justin Jefferson still be Griddy-ing.
Wait, actually?
Oh, shit.
Wait, he's unck now.
Confirmed.
I know.
But yeah, cooked is a good one.
I feel like there's no other replacement that has come up that's better than, "Oh, I'm cooked," so far.
I feel that.
The only other option I can think of in my mind is, "Yeah, I'm fucked."
Okay, I have a question.
是的。
Yes.
I still think that people say like W or L a lot.
And I do think that's a part of streamers' slang.
But do you think that one will have longevity, or do you feel like that wave is gonna end soon?
哦。
Ooh.
Okay, I'm probably a bad person to ask.
Because I am not up to date.
But I do agree.
I think because W and L, although I feel like nowadays people just say dub, I feel like it's just easy, and it's universal.
Like, it can apply to everything, right?
I do feel like that one has some longevity in it.
And a lot of the streams that I watch, when I am watching streams, they're professional esports, right?
So I feel like it's really used in there.
比如——
Like-
对。
True
... "Go for the dub," or like, "Just take the L next map.
Fuck it."
I think L might have more longevity than W almost.
Because there's a lot of scenarios where there's an L, and then you just talk about it.
对。
True.
I think we all, on average, take more Ls than Ws.
You remember the Ls, but not your Ws.
But in similar vein, I think the word looksmaxing-
... or the format something maxing has really taken off.
Because when we first talked about it, it was quite niche.
确实。
It was.
And it was literally just about improving your appearance, but now people add maxing at the end of anything that people-
... want to improve or something, and it's crazy.
I know our group chat, we always talk about fiber maxing because we want to increase our fiber intake.
Fiber maxing, protein maxing.
Dude, I'm not going to lie, I've heard old people say it.
什么?
What?
No way.
And they say it ironically.
It's really funny, actually.
Wait, what are they maxing?
I think one time someone was like, "I'm beer maxing, LOL."
Oh my God, that's so funny.
How many of these people using the maxing format know who Clavicular is?
Oh my God, wait, that's so true.
Most people probably don't know the OG.
But okay, actually, I think there's a difference.
If you're like 35 plus-
... and you have children, low-key, you're hip.
哦。
Oh.
Damn.
确实。
That's true.
Because you have to know what your kids are watching online, like you have to be in the know.
A lot of parents don't like Clavicular, right?
So they need to know who he is.
Dude, that's such a good point.
You know how Six7 was really popular for a while?
Someone brought it up at work, and my coworker was like, "Oh yeah, my fourth grader said Six7 is not funny anymore because the kindergartners started saying it at school, so it's not cool."
Oh my God.
I was like, damn.
I'm fucking keeping up with Gen Alpha now.
Actually, they might not even be Gen Alpha anymore.
Dude, that is some unknown generation right now.
But I was also thinking, not only do the parents need to know who these public figures are-
... but they need to know what kind of content that they're creating-
Mm, true
... to know when their kid says something, that it originated from this creator, and then they're like, "I thought I cut you off from this person."
"No, you can't watch Clavicular anymore.
You can't watch JasonTheWeed anymore."
It's Cocomelon only.
I feel like the parents are in the know.
Like they're cool.
That's so funny, though.
Okay, it's just bittersweet that at one point in life, millennials were the people coming up with the cool slang terms.
And now they're the ones parenting their Gen Alpha kids on what they can and can't watch or can and can't say.
But it's going to be even worse when we're the parents, and we're Zillennials, so I don't know.
I still hold onto a bit of that youthful feeling.
But soon we're not going to be cool.
Wait, no. I think you'll stay cool.
You'll be on top of that shit when you're a parent.
I guess so, but I'll be bird's-eye view, instead of-
... being in the trenches with everyone.
This is what I think is going to happen.
You are taking care of your child, right?
So you're like, "Okay, these are the creators that they should avoid until they're older."
The ban is in the house.
But when you're out in the real world, you are full on using those terms.
And you're full on referring to them, and you know-
I'm dead
... every single reference.
I'm secretly watching the people that I banned.
Yeah, totally.
I don't know if I would watch Clavicular, but I can kind of envision that.
I get sucked into it while I'm trying to keep my kids safe.
You're aware.
You're always on top of it.
Who are you if not the indie slang knower?
Every current modern day, I thank past Jeesoo for teaching me mogging- ... and looksmaxxing, and viewing.
Oh my god.
I do remember a couple episodes where we had a Gen Z slang.
And then you were like, "I have literally never heard anyone use this ever in my life."
Dude, but now it's everywhere.
And I was like, "Damn, Jeesoo's an early adopter."
It's so funny, though, because even though we talked about words with longevity, I feel like there's also a lot of slang that just fell off the face of the earth-
... that no one uses anymore.
Remember when people used to say on fleek?
Oh my god.
Wait, that was a millennial thing.
哦。
Oh.
Maybe that's why there's no longevity.
That was a millennial thing, and I think that was 10 plus years ago.
That was college for us.
确实。
That's true.
I think even when we talked about on fleek on this podcast, we were like, "Yeah, this shit is hella old."
"It's on the outs."
Okay, I also remember specifically on fleek was for eyebrows.
But now, I guess everyone has homogenized.
There's a standard eyebrow kind of style, so on fleek is gone.
That's true, because, oh my god, doing eyebrows in 2016, bro, that shit was Sharpied on, basically.
The Anastasia Brow Pomade.
Yeah, exactly.
People still say lit, right?
I think so.
But I don't know if the young people think that it's lame.
靠。
Fuck.
I think you're right.
I've never seen a young person say lit.
I say it around our millennial friends.
Actually, do I even say it as much now?
I think I had a lit problem before.
I can literally name some of our friends who still have a lit problem.
So I think it comes out when we're all together.
Currently out in the wild, though, I think I talk less.
I try to observe more.
Mouth closed, ears open.
没错。
Exactly.
Okay, well, I googled common 2010 slang and meanings.
Maybe we should rapid fire-
Oh my god
... in or out, okay?
好。
Okay.
In, out, but also, do you use this personally?
Bae.
哦~
Ooh.
I never really used this.
But sometimes it just fits.
I actually still use it sometimes.
I never use it in its actual meaning, your SO or whatever.
I'm trying to think of an example of how I would use it.
I think I only ever really use it in a context of someone really liking something, like an object or a topic.
So, for example-
哦。
Oh.
Would it be like if I had a fantasy football player, and then he really popped off one week, you would be like, "Oh, that's your bae"?
对。
Yes.
Actually, yeah, exactly.
好。
Okay.
I feel like that makes sense.
I think bae is kind of funny and ironic, but you can never say, "Oh, this is my bae."
对。
No.
Then it's weird.
It comes wack as fuck.
That's never going to be about your actual partner.
Okay, I see on fleek.
We talked about this one.
Oh, dude.
I see lit.
YOLO.
Oh my god.
Okay, I don't say or use YOLO anymore, but I can't lie, that is my life motto.
It's tattooed on your back or some shit.
Oftentimes, I'm kind of just like, "Yeah, fuck it.
We just got to do it."
Dude, I love YOLO, honestly.
Okay, YOLO has perfect ironic usage potential.
Don't you think so?
Yes, because when we were younger, I would always be like, "Yeah, fuck it.
YOLO,兄弟。”
YOLO, dude."
You just have to say it really fast in passing.
So now, I don't say it out loud, but it is the mentality that stays.
It's the attitude coursing through your veins.
Yes, exactly.
好的。
Okay.
Flex.
Oh, wait.
Actually, this is still used-
... a lot.
Oh, shit.
Okay, but I guess mogging is kind of flexing.
Oh, true.
But it's different.
It's a little different, because like-
Flex is a little bit more braggy.
You can flex on people, or you can unintentionally mog people.
Or you can flex your collection of stuff.
Like, "Oh, he's flexing his shit."
对。
True.
I think flex is still alive and well.
好的。
Okay.
Do you use it?
I think I do still use it, but I probably use mog a little bit more.
I think I never really used flex that much, but it can pop out of me sometimes.
Okay, actually, the only context that I really use it in now is when someone does a humble brag in a conversation, and then-
对
Yes
……
...
I'll be like, "Okay, nice flex."
对。
Yes.
I kind of use it in a more derogatory way as well.
Like, "Stop trying to flex so hard."
对。
Yes.
That kind of thing.
好,那“deadass”呢?
Okay, how about deadass?
Oh, dude, this was your bae.
确实。
True.
I personally never really use this word But I hear it.
It's alive and well.
I heard a teenager use it the other day.
It is alive and well.
Oh, my God.
That's very validating.
Thank God, because I still use it.
I'm like, "I hope it's not uncool."
No, you're cool as fuck for using it.
对。
Yes.
Deadass and I are friends, but I don't ever use it, because when we were still in college, in one of my early internships, one of my more millennial bosses asked me that year, she was like, "Hey, so I've been hearing deadass a lot.
Can we confirm the meaning of this?"
And so I explained it to them, and then we did some exercises of using deadass in sentences.
What the fuck?
It's like a vocab lesson, but only on one word.
It was like, so if I said, "This is deadass blah, blah, blah."
There was a second word that also might sound negative, but is actually positive.
So she used both of them in a full sentence, and I was like, "That is exactly right, and that is you're the best, basically."
And she's like, "Got it."
Deadass
Deadass is just such a perfect slang word.
There's nothing that has a similar meaning, I think.
Just replaced honestly.
I never say honestly anymore.
For real?
Oh, true.
Damn, is for real on the outs?
That's not as emphatic as deadass.
Deadass somehow sounds more serious, maybe because there's mild cussing involved.
I feel like deadass is one of those words where you could just have a conversation with just that word.
Deadass。
Deadass.
Deadass。
Deadass.
Okay, kind of similar, but not so similar to deadass, though, is when something funny would happen, and then everyone would be like, "Oh my God, I'm dead.
I'm deceased."
And then variations of the word dead.
I feel like not a lot of people say it anymore, but I cannot stop saying it.
I am still out here saying, "I'm dead," in 2026.
Dude, that is the millennial in us.
I know.
I'm guilty of that, too.
I think I also still say that occasionally.
I notice the kids now, at least in the comments, they'll go, "I'm crying," but instead of crying spelled out the normal way, it's like C-R-I-N-E, like, "I'm crine."
C-R-I-N-E。
C-R-I-N-E.
哦。
Oh.
And it's semi-ironic usage.
When we say, "I'm dead," it's not ironic, right?
But when they say, "I'm crine," it's kind of like, "I'm laughing, but what the fuck?"
That kind of vibe.
哦。
Oh.
My.
But I'm like 30 now.
No. I think that makes us just look like we don't know how to spell.
I think now what we do to escape the I'm dead is the skull emoji.
But did you know that kids don't use that as much?
Yeah, they use the wilting rose.
They use the rose emoji.
哦。
Oh.
I think because skull emoji was really, really easy for everyone to hop on, so then the kids were like, "Ugh, the old people are already using this shit."
It was way too fast.
So they're like, "We need to find a more ambiguous emoji."
So that's why they use the rose now.
That's my theory.
Should we hop on it?
But okay, I feel like as soon as we start using it, they're going to use some new niche emoji.
I think in our friend group, actually, we have kind of hopped on it.
Oh, I guess so.
Little bit.
In our fantasy chat, there's a lot of wilting roses.
好的。
Okay.
确实。
That's true.
好的。
Okay.
I have a list of 2026 words now, but I know you also have words, too.
Yeah, so it sounds like our millennial slang, we need to move on for the most part.
We'll leave it behind in the 2010s.
好的。
Okay.
I think the new strat is you have to become neutral.
You have to become someone who doesn't use slang but understands slang, and then you seem wise.
But I'm not going for wise.
Oh, okay.
I think that's my problem.
I'm going for young and hip.
哦。
Oh.
But now that I'm not young, I have to be doubly as hip, and that's just really hard.
I don't want to be typing out C-R-I-N-E and shit.
I feel like I'm just trying to go for chameleon.
I can be an adult with adults, and I can-
... be a kid with kids.
Okay, I'm ready for current day slang.
好的。
Okay.
Let's go through 2026 slang words.
Type shit.
Let's put this on the chopping block.
I used this IRL the other day.
哦。
Ooh.
There was a moment where it totally made sense, and I was like, "Type shit."
Did it feel natural?
It was mildly natural.
好的。
Okay.
Do you think you'll up the usage-
不会
No
... of your type shit?
不会。
No.
Oh, okay.
Only when it's perfect.
I also feel like type shit is one of those phrases that you could low-key say at any time, and people-
Oh, yeah
... will just be like, "Type shit."
I was watching this video on YouTube, and the format of the video was that there was contestants for something, and then there's these two judges, and they give each contestant a score.
So, this one girl was on the judging block, I guess, and then the two judges gave her a 10 and a 10.
And then she saw the score, and she was like, "Type shit."
And that made me laugh so hard.
I was like, "Dude, that's so fucking good."
That is good.
But did you think that type shit is going out?
Because I think you said, "Is it going on a chopping block?"
No, I was curious if you think it'll stay-
哦
Oh
... for a long time or not.
It is a very versatile phrase-
... because you can apply it to everything, but I don't know if it would have the same longevity as something a little bit more neutral.
WL is kind of more neutral.
I feel like even maxing just has a lot of applications.
But type shit is like, yes, you could use it in a lot of scenarios, but I feel like it's going to be one of those phrases we look back, and we're like, "That's so 2026."
I think people have a fear of using it, because they don't fully understand it.
And I don't think I hear it that often.
It's one of those phrases where people who use it spam that shit.
Yeah, that's true.
And then people who don't use it, don't use it at all.
That is true.
I'm neutral about this one.
I could live without it.
Okay, I'm going to bring this one up because we talked about it before-
... off the pod, and you said you don't know it.
Lately, I think people respond a lot in GIFs, and I guess it's just their way of emoting online.
So there's this one that's a cake.
There's a hand that's putting a cherry on top.
And that has evolved into, instead of just a hand putting a single cherry, sometimes it's a handful of cherries, sometimes it's a truck dumping- ... hella cherries.
So when it's like, there's a nice bonus that's about to happen, but instead of the nice bonus, you get a lot of really nice things, or something really, really cool happens, then you get the truckload of cherries?
So basically, this is supposed to be like period, or rent was due, or ate.
哦。
Oh.
It's just like, "Oh, this was perfect."
Oh, wait, what the hell?
It was so perfect with the cherry on top even, and sometimes it's like, "Oh my God, it was so perfect.
It was like there's so many cherries on top."
Like, it was just beyond perfect.
Dude, that is not the usage that I thought you were going to say.
I thought it was literally just a variation of cherry on top, but not with the perfect context.
I think it's more that it's perfect, and less that it's cherry on top.
Wait, that's crazy.
哇。
Wow.
That's unintuitive for me.
Interesting.
But I haven't been on TikTok as much, so I don't know if it's still used that much, but I think it's pretty funny.
I'll keep an eye out.
Dude, sometimes I wish I could be a wallflower in younger Gen Z-
... text message chains-
哦~
Ooh
... and see how they interact with each other.
I once had this coworker who lived a very young life.
You know how I was like, "Oh, I want to be young and hip?"
This person was actually young and hip-
好的
Okay
... even though we weren't that far off in age.
Some of the ways that this person would communicate with the team on Slack, I was like, "Wow, this is like actual youth.
I'm just LARPing."
Oh my God.
But yeah, their GIFy game was always on point.
Dude, right?
And it wasn't just the basic Slack GIFs that are like, "The office!"
You know?
It was actually relevant memes and shit, yeah.
Okay, dude.
I think I'm evolving because I am becoming skeptical of my very millennial team's GIF and-
哦
Ooh
... emoji usage.
Are you low-key judging them?
You're like, "That one is too common."
I don't know why, but there's certain Slack emojis that have a fucking choke hold of the millennial, what's the word, generation crowd.
Fucking party croissant, party parrot.
Party parrot.
You know that party sweet?
That party sweet, yo, that shit tilts me.
Wait, okay, I need to look up party croissant and party sweet.
But party parrot, I totally agree.
Or, I mean, party sweet as in like the suite-
哦
Oh
... of all those party emojis.
But party croissant is one that my team uses a lot because we have a French person in our org, and I'm just like, "Dude, these party emojis, they need to go."
I feel like what emojis you use in Slack can definitely date you.
You know the crying laughing emoji, but it's slightly tilted sideways?
I'm like, "Oh my God.
We have to stop using this, guys."
Wait, but is crying laughing emoji okay upright?
To me, no, but it's okay.
好的。
Okay.
I'll be sure to erase that from my keyboard in my texts to you.
More wilted rose, less laughing emoji.
好的。
Okay.
But yeah, I think picking the perfect GIF or the perfect emoji is a learned skill.
It's like a muscle.
You have to exercise it.
And the young generation, they're unbeatable.
Dude.
And they pull it up so fucking fast.
I'd be in that GIF library for fucking five minutes-
Same
... hunting for something.
I'm like, "What the fuck is this meme called?"
Where are they getting these perfect memes for every single situation?
没错。
Literally.
And they know the name for it, or they have it saved on their phones.
Should I be saving memes on my phone?
I think that's what the youth do.
They have a folder of memes.
I actually tried that before, but I don't know.
It was hard to upkeep, and-
Oh my God
... even though I had it, it was a very limited selection.
And I can't keep using the same two memes over and over again.
但是——
But-
... maybe I should start back on it.
I also hate that it just gets mixed in with all your other photos.
对。
Yes.
Oof.
Really dating ourselves here.
At work, because my team is millennial as fuck, so their GIF usage is very millennial.
Sometimes I actually don't know the references though, because I'm on the younger end of millennial.
哦。
Oh.
So I'm like, "Fuck.
I'm learning on the wrong side, guys."
We need to update ourselves.
We need to get onto the new and updated memes, but I think it's up to me, sadly, to put them on.
If you're the youngest, you have to lead the charge.
But I'm the youngest, but I don't know if I'm youngest at heart.
Do you know what I mean?
I'm a boomer.
No, but you're a reformed boomer.
Okay, that's true.
I did tell my team lead, though, I was like, "We need to hire a Gen Z." And she's like, "Aren't you Gen Z?"
And I was like, "No, I'm a boomer."
And she's like, "Dude, when you said that to me, that has stayed with me for my entire life."
Like, "Crystal's a boomer."
Just how you identify.
No, but I know what you mean, because I'm also one of the younger people on my team, and I feel like I use the skull emoji a lot, so then I've noticed that other people on the team have adopted it.
哦。
Oh.
And then now I'm like, "Fuck, I put you guys on the wrong thing.
Guys, we need to transfer."
好的。
Okay.
Or transition to wilted rose.
So it is my job Fuck
Okay, I'll try.
We do have one teammate, she's kind of Gen Z because she's on-
... TikTok and stuff, but I wonder if she's fearful of sharing too much-
哦。
Oh
... youthful energy.
She blends in well, but I think her heart is young.
Do you know what I mean?
She's going chameleon strat.
Yes, exactly.
好。
Okay.
I feel like you should start to drop in hints here and there, that you're cool, that you're with it-
好的
Okay
... with the culture.
I should start typing out "deadass" in our chats.
Cryin'.
Oh, God.
They'll be like, "Is Crystal having a stroke?"
That's the humor nowadays.
Just have a stroke next to your keyboard, and you're funny.
Okay, I have one, and it's something that I feel like I hear often on podcasts or TikToks, but I don't know if people say it as much in real life.
这个就是“standing on business”。
This one is standing on business/
哦
Oh
... the other variation is ten toes down.
Oh my God, I have not seen ten toes down as much.
哦。
Oh.
But standing on business, I've definitely seen.
Okay, I'm going to be honest, I'm very, very neutral on this.
Leaning on-
哦
Oh
... like, don't use, not that funny.
Yeah, there's not a big funny factor to it, but I listen to a lot of... Okay, mini confession, but I listen to a lot of trashy celebrity- ... pop culture podcasts.
And whenever there's celebrity drama, for example, Love Island couple-
... breaks up, and then they expose each other.
The guy counter-exposes the girl, but the girl stands ten toes down.
She stands on business, basically stands up to the guy or refuses to back down.
When I hear it, I don't feel an aversion to the phrase.
Oh, okay.
I'm like, "Oh, this is a pretty appropriate usage."
So I don't know-
... if I would say it, but I don't hate it.
Yeah, I feel that.
It's not necessarily meant to be funny.
It's a phrase.
I'm okay with that.
I have one to share since yours is a little niche, I guess.
Well, no, I feel like it's not even that niche, but it's very applicable to that sphere that you just described.
Yeah, like a specific-
So, I have this phrase that is very specific to the spheres that I traverse.
汗。
Sweat.
汗。
Sweat.
So there's a few variations of this.
The noun version, sweat.
Just basically means someone who is try-hard.
And it originated in a lot of gaming spheres.
Sometimes you're just playing games for fun, and then someone comes along, and they're trying their hardest to be the hero or whatever.
对。
Yes.
And everyone's like, "Whoa, look at that sweat."
We're all here playing recreationally, and this guy comes out as if it's NBA or something.
And so there's another version of sweat/sweats, which is the adjective.
So if you're being sweaty-
... or if people are being sweaty or sweaty behavior- ... that kind of stuff.
So I always joke that in fantasy, I'm a huge sweat.
Dude, sweat is so funny, and I feel like this will last a very long time, but I guess you're right.
It is a little niche.
It's more in the gaming community because I think-
... even in sports, I don't know if people really use it as often.
Not sure, because I feel like when we watch sports, it's usually professional, so they have to be sweaty.
Everyone is sweats.
Yeah, sweaty is such a good one, and I feel like the usage of the word sweat can actually be more versatile than you would think.
I remember a couple of months ago, we went karaoke.
It was karaoke with people who are really good-
天哪
Oh my God
... singing their fucking socks off.
It's not like the normal, we just sing some random popular song, jumping in the living room.
It was people actually singing.
And Crystal just turned to me and was like, "Damn, I want to karaoke, but it's a lobby of sweats in here."
I was scared off.
It's like when people karaoke, and it's the type where they demand a stage.
Whether that's verbally or through their singing, and you're like- ... "Ooh, yeah, maybe I won't sing tonight."
I will be in the audience today.
Okay, I have another one that I love to use, and I feel like-
... is still really popular.
Crash out。
Crash out.
Oh, dude, yeah.
That one's another one where I'm like, "Thank you, past Jeesoo, for teaching me this word."
Wait, did I teach that one to you?
You did, and when you brought it up, I think it was still in its baby phase.
It was starting to gain traction, but now it's kind of everywhere.
Now it's in the dictionary.
It's not, but you know.
Yeah, and this one is so good because it can be a verb or also a noun.
You can be crashing out or losing your shit about something, or you can refer to a mini episode that you had over the weekend.
Like, "Oh, I had a little crash out this weekend."
And I feel like it's so applicable to me because you know me and my crises.
So now I'm just like, "Oh, dude, I'm literally always crashing out."
And you can even...
This is a term that you could use at work, too.
Sometimes something goes wrong at work, I'm like, "Fucking crashing out in my little desk."
But do people at work get confused because they think you mean passing out?
哇。
Whoa.
Do you remember that's the OG millennial boomer term?
When you crash, you are just passing out.
No. Wait, what?
