You are listening to the English Like a Native podcast, a learning resource for intermediate and advanced English learners. This particular episode is part of a series called Your English Five a Day, which aims to introduce five new pieces of vocabulary each day of the week. Hello, welcome to the English Like a Native podcast.
现在是《每日英语五词》第3.3期——驼峰日特辑。'驼峰日'是工作日的俚语说法。这个词不在我们的短语列表里,属于额外赠送词汇。来记住它吧——驼峰日,指一周的中间日(周三)。
This is your English five a Day episode number 3.3, hump day. Hump day is a slang phrase for weekday. That s not one of the words on our phrases list. It s a bonus word. There you go, hump day, the middle of the week.
当然,这个说法仅适用于你在节目实际发布当天收听,或是按照既定顺序(比如周一是第几点一期,周二是第几点二期,周三是第几点三期等等)收听的情况。所以如果今天是周三,祝你驼峰日快乐!但如果你不按顺序、随时随意收听这些播客也没关系——没有硬性规定。我不会冲去你家敲门制止你在周日听这期节目。不过这种开场白真是糟糕透了。
Of course, that's only if you're following this on the day that it's actually been released or following this in an order which is intended with the number whatever point one due on Monday, number whatever point two on Tuesday, whatever point three on Wednesday, and so on. So, Happy Hump Day if it is Wednesday. But if it's not, because you can listen to these podcasts in whatever order, whenever you want, whatever serves you, There's no rules. I'm not going to come and knock on your door and turn you off for listening to this on a Sunday. But this is a terrible way to open up this podcast.
抱歉。现在正式开始吧。让我们直接进入今天精彩的词汇列表。第一个是名词'delicacy(珍馐)',指美味但昂贵或特别罕见的食物。
I'm sorry. Here we go. Let's dive straight into this fabulous list of words and phrases today. Number one is a noun delicacy. A delicacy is a food that is good to eat, but it's expensive or especially rare.
这不是你每周五晚上都会大快朵颐的普通食物。珍馐是难得品尝的美味,或许只在特殊场合享用。我环球旅行时总是尽力品尝当地珍馐。你家乡的特色美食是什么?例句:'哈吉斯是苏格兰特色美食,但很多人对它嗤之以鼻。'
So it's not the kind of food that you chow down on every Friday night. A delicacy is something that you have very rarely, on occasion, for a special occasion perhaps. When I was travelling the world, I always tried my best to taste the local delicacies. What would you say is the local delicacy where you come from? Here's an example sentence: Haggis is a Scottish delicacy that many people turn their nose up at.
我个人很喜欢它。不过这句例句并不代表我对哈吉斯的真实感受,这个话题留待其他播客讨论吧。继续下一个词——形容词'pungent(刺鼻的)',跟我读。
Personally, I love it. And that was just an example sentence that doesn't have any bearing on how I feel about haggis, but that's something for another podcast. Let's move on. The next word is an adjective and it is pungent. Repeat it.
刺鼻。刺鼻。我喜欢这个词。这个词本身就带着它要表达的意思。刺鼻指的是非常强烈或难闻的气味。
Pungent. Pungent. I like this word. It's the kind of word that feels like what it means. Pungent means a very sharp or strong smell.
哦,那是什么?好刺鼻。我们这里说的是难闻的气味。如果有人对我说我闻起来很刺鼻,我会非常难过。我会赶紧跑回家或去洗手间,尽可能把自己洗干净,然后拿些除臭剂或任何闻起来不错的东西喷在身上,试图掩盖任何难闻的气味,这样我就不会闻起来刺鼻了。
Oh, what is that? It's pungent. So we're talking about a bad smell here. If someone said that I smelt quite pungent, I would be quite upset. I would rush to the house or to a bathroom or a toilet and I would clean myself as best I could and grab some deodorant or anything that smells nice and spray myself and try and mask any bad smell so that I didn't smell pungent.
举个例子:空气中弥漫着腐烂鸡肉的刺鼻气味。我绝对不会从那家肉店买东西。恶心!不说腐烂鸡肉了,我们来看下一个词。这是个名词,营养。
Here's an example sentence: There was a pungent odour of rotten chicken in the air. No way was I going to buy from that butcher. Yuck! Moving away from rotten chicken, let's do our next word. It's a noun and it is nutrition.
营养基本上是我们作为食物摄入体内、影响健康的物质。所以当我们谈论营养时,我们讨论的是食物如何影响健康。举个例子:营养是应该被更认真对待的事情。快餐味道不错,但从长远来看弊大于利。你认真对待营养吗?
Nutrition is basically the substances that we take into our bodies as food that influence our health. So when we're talking about nutrition, we're talking about how food influences our health. Here's an example sentence: Nutrition is something that should be taken more seriously. Fast food tastes good, but it causes more damage than good in the long run. Do you take nutrition seriously?
我尽量。我当然在努力提升营养水平。我试着吃更有营养的饭菜。看,我们把它变成了形容词。你准备了一顿营养丰富的饭菜。
I try to. I'm certainly trying to improve my levels of nutrition. I'm trying to eat more nutritious meals. There we go, we've turned it into an adjective. You prepare a nutritious meal.
昨天午餐我吃了一份很棒的健康沙拉,里面有核桃、大量特级初榨橄榄油和羊奶酪。那是一碗营养丰富的沙拉。现在离晚餐时间也不远了,谈论沙拉碗让我有点饿了。好了,我们来看下一个词,这是个动词,挨饿。
Yesterday for my lunch, I had a nice healthy salad with walnuts and lots of extra virgin olive oil and feta cheese. It was a nutritious salad bowl. And it's not long off my dinner time. I'm quite hungry now talking about salad bowls. Okay, let's move on to our next word, which is a verb and it is starve.
挨饿 挨饿是让自己或他人因缺乏食物而变得非常虚弱。举个例子:在当前的生活成本危机下,许多父母被迫挨饿,好让他们的孩子能吃上饭。这种情况必须停止。有趣的是,即使不是在我刚才说的那种严重程度,我们也会用挨饿这个词。你可能会说'我快饿死了',其实意思只是'我有点饿'。
Starve To starve is to cause yourself or someone to become very weak due to lack of food. Here is an example sentence: With the current cost of living crisis, many parents are forced to starve themselves so that their children can eat. This has to stop. Interestingly, we use the word starve even when we don't mean starve in the level of seriousness that I've just presented it. You might say, I'm starving, when you mean I'm just hungry.
我已经几个小时没吃东西了,现在很饿,真的非常饿。我快饿死了。能给我点吃的吗?我快饿死了。今天清单上的第五项是个习语,叫‘吃得像马一样多’。
I haven't eaten for a few hours and now I'm hungry, but really hungry. I'm starving. Can I have some food please? I'm starving. And number five on today's list is an idiom and it is to eat like a horse.
‘吃得像马一样多’。如果你吃得像马一样多,意思就是你吃得很多。实际上我不确定马是否真的吃得很多,它们只是体型大而已。马只是啃食些草和干草,对吧?我见过的狗狼吞虎咽的样子可能比马吃东西的样子还多,但我们有‘吃得像马一样多’这个表达来形容吃得很多。
To eat like a horse. If you eat like a horse, then it means you eat a lot of food. In fact, I'm not sure that horses actually do eat very much, it's just they're big animals. Horses just graze, don't they, on a bit of grass and hay. I've probably seen dogs wolf down more food than I've ever seen a horse eat, but we have this expression to eat like a horse, to eat a lot.
举个例子:我不知道汉娜怎么能保持这么瘦,她吃得像马一样多。这总让我想起一家叫‘饥饿马’的连锁餐厅。‘饥饿马’餐厅基本上提供非常便宜、可能没什么营养的食物,而且分量很大。我年轻时曾是‘饥饿马’餐厅的忠实粉丝,但现在我不去了,因为我喜欢吃有营养的食物。
Here's an example. I don't know how Hannah stays so thin when she eats like a horse. This always makes me think of the restaurant chain that's called Hungry Horse. The Hungry Horse restaurants basically serve very cheap, probably not very nutritious food, and they do large portions. I was always a big fan of hungry horse restaurants when I was younger, but these days I don't go to hungry horse restaurants because I like to eat nutritious food.
好的,这就是我们的五个词。我们有‘美味佳肴’。什么是美味佳肴?它是一种非常稀有且通常昂贵的食物。下一个形容词是‘刺鼻的’。
Okay, so that was our five words. We had delicacy. What's a delicacy? It's a very rare and often expensive food. Pungent was the next adjective.
如果某物闻起来非常难闻,它就是‘刺鼻的’。‘营养’是个名词,指进入体内影响健康的物质。然后我们有动词‘挨饿’。‘挨饿’指因缺乏食物而让人极度饥饿。与之相反,如果你有很多食物,你可能会‘吃得像马一样多’。
If something smells really bad, it is pungent. Nutrition was a noun that means the things that go into your body that affect your health. And then we had the verb starve. Starve to make someone extremely hungry through lack of food. On the opposite end of that, if you have lots of food, you may eat like a horse.
今天的最后一个习语。让我们把它们都融入一个故事中:马可大厨是一位烹饪专家,他刚刚接手了一项激动人心的新事业——在繁华都市的中心地带开了一家充满活力的街头小吃摊。怀着对烹饪的毕生热情,马可大厨创造了一个风味天堂,将普通的街头美食转变为烹饪杰作。当你走近他的摊位时,刺鼻的香气在空中飘荡,吸引着即使是最挑剔的食客。
Our final idiom for today. Let's bring them all together in a story. Chef Marco is a culinary expert who has just taken on a thrilling new venture, opening a vibrant street food stall in the heart of the bustling city. With a lifelong passion for cooking, Chef Marco has created a haven of flavours, where the humble street delicacy is transformed into a culinary masterpiece. The moment you approach his stall, the pungent aromas waft through the air, enticing even the most experienced palates.
马可大厨的摊位不仅仅是关于放纵。你不需要‘吃得像马一样多’就能感到满足,它还为那些在忙碌都市生活中可能挨饿的人提供营养。他的菜肴丰盛且令人满足,让顾客感到营养充足和心满意足。马可大厨提供的每一道菜都是风味的统一体,精心融合了香料、新鲜食材和一丝创意。从滋滋作响的烤肉串到美味的墨西哥卷饼,他的创作将美食爱好者带到了新的美食高度。
Chef Marco Stall is not just about indulgence. You don't need to eat like a horse to feel satisfied it's also about providing nutrition to those who would otherwise starve in their hectic urban lives. His dishes are hearty and fulfilling, leaving his customers feeling nourished and content. Each dish Chef Marco serves is a unity of flavours, carefully crafted with a fusion of spices, fresh ingredients, and a dash of creativity. From sizzling kebabs to savoury tacos, his creations transport food enthusiasts to new gastronomic heights.
每一口都带来诱人的味觉之旅,让你的味蕾焕发生机。马可大厨的街头小吃摊迅速成为美食专家、好奇的当地人和游客的打卡地。凭借非凡的才华和对烹饪的专注,马可大厨为街头美食树立了新标准,将普通餐点变成非凡体验。他对食物的热情,加上对营养与风味的执着,确保每位顾客离开摊位时都心满意足且回味无穷。你可能会疑惑为什么我用‘辛辣’这个词来表达正面意义。
Every bite offers a tempting journey, bringing your taste buds alive. Chef Marco's street food stall has quickly become a destination for food experts, curious locals and visitors alike. With his exceptional talent and dedication to his craft, chef Marco has set a new standard for street food, turning an ordinary meal into an extraordinary experience. His passion for food, combined with his commitment to nourishment and flavour, ensures that each customer leaves his stall feeling satisfied and a craving for more. You might be questioning why I used the word pungent in a positive way there.
‘辛辣’确实可以用于褒义。我本应在介绍这个词时就说明的。它通常带有负面含义,但也可以正面形容强烈或刺激的气味。好了,以上就是我们今天的内容。
You can use pungent in a positive way. I should have mentioned that when I introduced the word. It's often used in a negative way, but you can use it in a positive way just to mean the strong or the sharp smell. Okay, so there we go. That was our five for today.
