Speaker 0

I'm your host, Joe Corcione, and thank you so much for listening.

Speaker 0

Now let's get into it.

Speaker 0

What's up, everybody?

Speaker 0

One question I get asked a lot is, what are the supplements that you're taking to help you improve performance and recovery in your ultramarathon training?

Speaker 0

And there's one supplement that I've been taking that I've noticed great results that are also backed by science and research, and that is black currant extract from currants.

Speaker 0

Now black currants is a type of a berry, a type of fruit that has a lot of performance and recovery benefits, and currants has a special New Zealand type of black currants that is only proprietary to them that is shown to have great, great performance and recovery benefits.

Speaker 0

And here is just some studies, in controlled studies, of some evidence that was found with that too.

Speaker 0

Some controlled studies show that athletes who took the extract for a week or more showed better fat oxidation, which pretty much is the ability to burn fat as fuel for longer periods of time during exercise, which means you can handle a lower intensity for longer periods of time without bonking or fizzling out in those events, which is very important for ultrarunning.

Speaker 0

Also, there's improved cardiovascular responses, including increased blood flow and greater stroke volume, which means that you can go faster and your heart can handle more oxygen.

Speaker 0

And also from a recovery standpoint, one study showed that after an exercise induced muscle damage was reduced and muscle function recovered much, much quicker than compared to people who took a placebo.

Speaker 0

And for me, my training block that I found during Kodiak that I was able to show up for longer sessions, much more stronger and recovered, I saw that I was able to have recovery paces start to increase a lot more despite doing a lot of high workload.

Speaker 0

And ultimately, I was able to mentally feel a lot fresher on my workouts as well too.

Speaker 0

And it's not just me using it.

Speaker 0

There are elite athletes who are using this as well too.

Speaker 0

Hillary Allen, one of the most prominent ultrarunners of our time, just was part of a team silver win at the World Mountain Championships, and she's had multiple wins, multiple podiums over her career.

Speaker 0

And this is not just used by elite athletes as well.

Speaker 0

It's also used by the everyday runners as well too.

Speaker 0

So if you are looking for something to improve your performance and recovery from a supplement perspective, I suggest using CurraNZ.

Speaker 0

Speaker 0

What's up, everybody?

Speaker 0

Welcome to another episode of the everyday ultra podcast.

Speaker 0

I'm your host, Joe Corcione, and just a heads up that I'm turning over the host, Mike, on this episode to everyday coach on professional athlete and amazing human being, Alyssa Clark.

Speaker 0

She will be the main interviewer on this podcast.

Speaker 0

So if you hear a different host, it is her.

Speaker 0

And the cool thing is is she is the coach of the person who she's interviewing, doctor Jeffrey Hammond.

Speaker 0

Now you may remember Jeff as the foot doctor who he had on a couple episodes ago when he was talking about his training up to Cocodona, and he recently finished the Cocodona two fifty.

Speaker 0

And this is an episode where Alyssa and Jeff share Jeff's Cocodona experience, what he learned, and it's just such a riveting episode.

Speaker 0

So here is the episode with Alyssa and Doctor.

Speaker 0

Jeff Hammond on his Cocodona finish.

Speaker 1

What's up, everyone?

Speaker 1

Welcome to the everyday ultra podcast.

Speaker 1

My name is Alyssa Clark, and I am stoked to bring on a repeat guest, but I think in a bit of a different capacity this time.

Speaker 1

We have doctor Jeff Hammond known as our foot doctor, but he just completed the Cocodona two fifty.

Speaker 1

I'm putting it out there right now.

Speaker 1

Jeff, how are you doing?

Speaker 2

Well, I'm excited to be here not as, the foot doctor.

Speaker 2

It's kind of exciting.

Speaker 2

You're be, you know, still a foot doctor, but I'm feeling good.

Speaker 2

I mean, I am still exhausted, and here we are, what, two and a half weeks out.

Speaker 2

是的。

So yeah.

Speaker 2

But I'm, you know, happy.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Well, first off, Jeff has been so I should preface this that I was Jeff's coach for Cocodona two fifty, and he has been so patient on his return, taking it really easy.

Speaker 1

So you've been a model, athlete not rushing back into things.

Speaker 1

So, Jeff, first off, thanks for doing that.

Speaker 2

It's been so hard though.

Speaker 2

Like, kinda hard.

Speaker 2

Not really, actually.

Speaker 2

I mean, hard and not hard.

Speaker 2

Like, you see other people who've done the race getting back.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

And you're like and they're like posting, so social media is the worst.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

But great.

Speaker 2

And they're like posting, oh, I have my run first run back.

Speaker 2

And like, honestly, like, I still don't really have a desire to run a mile.

Speaker 2

Like, I I just wanna, like, play golf a little bit in some regard.

Speaker 1

Go on a slow walk or, like, do I think that's awesome.

Speaker 2

Grass.

Speaker 2

I love cutting the grass.

Speaker 2

So I've been doing that.

Speaker 1

If anyone needs to see what a model grass cutting lawn looks like, apparently, Jeff's is the best.

Speaker 2

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 2

Perfect lines, nice edge.

Speaker 2

我有点

I'm I'm a little

Speaker 1

That's okay.

Speaker 1

It it makes sense.

Speaker 1

It all checks out.

Speaker 1

喂。

Hey.

Speaker 1

So I wanna go back to the origin story of why you decided to run Cocodona two fifty.

Speaker 1

What brought you to this yeah.

Speaker 1

What brought you to it?

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I mean I mean, it's I think if anyone's listened to anything I've ever talked about, you know, in the past and everything, ultrarunning is actually new to me.

Speaker 2

I mean, take me a year ago when I hadn't run an ultra at this point.

Speaker 2

I mean, I had probably not run over 15 miles at this point a year ago.

Speaker 2

And, really, I was helping Shelby last year, and we she was doing Cocodona.

Speaker 2

She, you know, she was going for a podium finish.

Speaker 2

She's you know?

Speaker 2

And I came on as her foot doctor, and I was game about that.

Speaker 2

I was like, this is awesome.

Speaker 2

I love taking care of feet.

Speaker 2

I love doing all this.

Speaker 2

So we went, and I was at all her aid stations that we could be at, took care of her feet.

Speaker 2

And, like, I still remember sitting at Bumblebee Ranch waiting to go see her for the first time at Crown King and, you know, just chatting with the people, watching it on the livestream.

Speaker 2

And it was just, like, a really cool vibe.

Speaker 2

And the people were really nice.

Speaker 2

There was just something.

Speaker 2

I was like, This is really cool.

Speaker 2

And then we went and saw our crown king and took care of our feet.

Speaker 2

And it was just like, Here is someone who's already run 37 ish miles and wants to get in and out of the aid station in five minutes.

Speaker 2

You know?

Speaker 2

And you're like, What?

Speaker 2

You have miles and miles to go.

Speaker 2

And just like, you're seeing these people really push through some really cool, hard things.

Speaker 2

And so then I saw her throughout the whole race, really big lows, really highs, all these different things.

Speaker 2

Just that emotion to finish something so cool and having a group of people with you was a really big thing for me.

Speaker 2

I because I previously done Kilimanjaro, did it with a group of people that I I knew some of them, didn't know some of them, and we bonded really well, and it was really cool.

Speaker 2

And at end of Cocodona, like you, meeting you, and meeting other people on the team, it was so cool to come together.

Speaker 2

And just like even though it was Shelby who did the race, it was cool to be part of that.

Speaker 2

And so I wanted to do that myself.

Speaker 2

I wanted to do something that was really hard, have that kind of group feeling again.

Speaker 2

And I like pushing myself.

Speaker 2

Mean, you know that I would love to hike some crazy mountains that my wife won't let me hike and do crazy things like that.

Speaker 2

And so this is a good way to get that, I don't know, experience, that low and high in one thing.

Speaker 2

I don't know.

Speaker 2

So I said, I'm gonna do it.

Speaker 2

And I signed up, and there we go.

Speaker 1

It was your Everest.

Speaker 1

It was the Everest replacement.

Speaker 1

Though, I do wanna ask your wife, Maggie, at some point if she'd rather you go do Everest than

Speaker 2

Oh, no.

Speaker 1

Prove that again.

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 1

Still, that's still the answer.

Speaker 2

Okay.

Speaker 2

She Everest Everest is such a hard no.

Speaker 2

There's nothing there.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Crew again?

Speaker 2

I mean, I don't know if you saw all her paperwork or anything.

Speaker 1

I think

Speaker 2

she always took a photo.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I took a photo as well.

Speaker 1

I need to add that into the show notes or something.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

It she was spectacular crew chief.

Speaker 2

I mean, she was amazing.

Speaker 2

I mean, managing the emotions ahead of my whole family crewing it, and so that brings different emotions when you have family there.

Speaker 2

And she did such an excellent job at just doing that and then keeping me going.

Speaker 2

And, honestly, she was not gonna let me quit.

Speaker 2

I mean, I think I would have had to have both legs, like, chopped off for her to, like, tell me not to quit.

Speaker 2

And so yeah.

Speaker 2

不会。

No.

Speaker 2

I think now would she say, would I let me do another 200 plus mile race?

Speaker 2

I think that's maybe maybe something, but I think a 100 mile race should be all over.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

This see, this is the advantage when you I did this with my family is that I went to two hundreds and did a few of them really early.

Speaker 1

And then when I went back to hundreds, they were like, this is great.

Speaker 1

This is nothing.

Speaker 1

So you just, know, you really push And the then, yeah, when you come back, they're like, This is so reasonable.

Speaker 1

You're like, No one says this is reasonable, but here we are.

Speaker 2

对。

No.

Speaker 2

Now they'll be like, Oh, you're just going to go do 100.

Speaker 2

Okay, go do 100.

Speaker 2

Honestly, I think that's how they'll be in which is good because now we can yeah.

Speaker 2

I don't know.

Speaker 1

So what made you decide, hey.

Speaker 1

I'm gonna go straight.

Speaker 1

And there was some things in between.

Speaker 1

But what made you want to go to the 250 mile distance?

Speaker 1

Was it about the distance?

Speaker 1

Was it about Cocodona specifically over, say, the quote unquote more traditional path of moving up in distance more incrementally?

Speaker 2

That's a good question.

Speaker 2

Well, considering that I was new to ultrarunning, I didn't really know there was other 200 mile races out there.

Speaker 2

So there's that, which I do now know.

Speaker 2

It's amazing how much I've learned in a year and how much now I'm, like, on the flip side of, like, the trail world.

Speaker 2

I think a lot of it was Cocodona.

Speaker 2

I mean, I think Cocodona is a special race.

Speaker 2

Like, now that I've learned about other 200 miles, there's some really amazing 200 mile races, plus mile races out there.

Speaker 2

But the fact that you're, like, in the cactuses, you're in the pines, you're in the cactuses, you're going up Red Rock.

Speaker 2

Like, you go through so much really cool scenery, and it's just something I don't know.

Speaker 2

There's something really, I think, unique about that particular race.

Speaker 2

I don't know if it's just we've ourselves as people have made it seem that way, but it just is a special race, I feel like.

Speaker 2

And I think a lot of it was just the pull of doing Cocodona.

Speaker 2

I mean, if it would have been a 500 mile race, I probably still would have signed up for it.

Speaker 2

If it was a 50 mile race, I probably still would have signed up for it.

Speaker 2

There was something about that race I think that really drew me to it, not necessarily the distance.

Speaker 2

I I don't think I've ever and before then, in my mind, was like, oh, I have to do a 200 mile race.

Speaker 2

Like, it could have been a 100 mile race, I would have said, oh, I think I wanna do the 100 mile race.

Speaker 2

I think there was just something really special about that race to me.

Speaker 1

I love that.

Speaker 1

And, normally, I tend to encourage people to follow a little bit more of a, hey.

Speaker 1

Let's make sure we kind of go through the distances before we get to two hundreds.

Speaker 1

But there is something about, a, just your experience.

Speaker 1

So you've also done triathlons.

Speaker 1

You've done Kilimanjaro.

Speaker 1

You've done a lot of endurance things, and also just I trusted you to know yourself of, like, hey.

Speaker 1

This is too far.

Speaker 1

This is okay.

Speaker 1

Also, Cocodona brings up a really interesting balance of in some ways, I think 200 milers are they're very different than a 100 milers, and so they can be challenging in some ways and actually, I think not easier, but just different.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And so it's not always my recommendation.

Speaker 1

I think it's very case by case, but there was something about you in particular that I was like,

Speaker 2

固执。

stubborn.

Speaker 2

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

You can just

Speaker 1

say stubborn.

Speaker 1

I mean Yeah.

Speaker 1

不对。

No.

Speaker 1

But stubborn and also it's not just stubbornness because I think stubbornness can really get us into trouble.

Speaker 1

But I think I mean, a, you have a medical background.

Speaker 1

You're smart about things.

Speaker 1

You know what you're doing.

Speaker 1

You it's not like you're not going into anything saying I'm gonna finish or I'm gonna die, like or be injured.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Think sometimes we get in those situations where people push too hard.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

You know, unfortunately, there was someone who passed away during the race.

Speaker 1

I don't know the situation about it.

Speaker 1

And not to say that they were pushing too hard.

Speaker 1

It was a medical, I think, situation that's very, very sad.

Speaker 1

But I do think sometimes people push too hard and end up chronically injured.

Speaker 1

And so I wasn't worried about that for you.

Speaker 1

But still, I think

Speaker 2

I'm glad you weren't worried

Speaker 1

about that.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It wouldn't be a

Speaker 2

point, though.

Speaker 2

Like, with some of the people that you I met out on the course and talked to and people I've talked to since, sometimes I'm like, no.

Speaker 2

Just stop.

Speaker 2

Like, there's no reason I don't know.

Speaker 2

I think sometimes you're you're right.

Speaker 2

I there and some stories I've heard of people who, like, got injured and then tried to continue on, and they were, like, seriously injured.

Speaker 2

Like, pretty well known people.

Speaker 2

And you're just like, hey.

Speaker 2

Stop.

Speaker 2

Like, you you don't have to prove anything to anybody.

Speaker 1

I can't tell you how many times during Cocodona, I just wanted to wrap people in a hug and say, are amazing as you are.

Speaker 1

You don't have to prove anything to anyone.

Speaker 1

I felt that so many times.

Speaker 1

And I guess if I could share that message to anyone, it like, of course, you wanna push yourself, but also you're enough as you are.

Speaker 1

And I think oftentimes in these long journeys, that gets that becomes really complicated, those feelings.

Speaker 1

But, anyway, sorry.

Speaker 1

I'm I'm No.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

不是。

No.

Speaker 2

Agree.

Speaker 2

不是。

No.

Speaker 2

I'm I'm right there with you because I feel like you know, because I talked to a lot of people out there and it was like, you know, like, you are like, people are really you can do it.

Speaker 2

You you're enough.

Speaker 2

You don't need to, like, you don't need to go 200 miles to prove or if you're doing a 10 mile race.

Speaker 2

I mean, I think I've talked to I've seen a ton of ultrarunners down my office.

Speaker 2

And, you know, and it's funny how, like, we get into this comparison.

Speaker 2

I'm doing only a 30 k or I'm only doing a 50 k or I'm only a 100 mile, whatever it may be.

Speaker 2

And like, no.

Speaker 2

Like, I don't care if you're doing a one k.

Speaker 2

You're doing something really cool.

Speaker 2

And I think a lot of people especially people coming back, I see a lot of people come back from injuries and they're like, oh, I need to get back to whatever, whatever.

Speaker 2

I'm like, no.

Speaker 2

Go walk around that block and that's awesome.

Speaker 2

That is cool.

Speaker 2

So Yeah.

Speaker 2

I'm sure people

Speaker 0

不对。

No.

Speaker 1

I Yes.

Speaker 1

Exactly.

Speaker 1

And also be kind to yourself, and there will always be another race.

Speaker 1

There will always be another opportunity.

Speaker 1

But to go back to your journey Yes.

Speaker 1

Specifically, so you get into Cocodona.

Speaker 1

You're like, oh my gosh.

Speaker 1

I'm in.

Speaker 1

I'm doing it.

Speaker 1

How does the next few months look for you, leading into we started working together, I think, in the fall.

Speaker 1

But how Yeah.

Speaker 1

How did things look for you before that?

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

So well yeah.

Speaker 2

So I think I got in, which I don't remember, maybe June or end of May when I got in.

Speaker 2

And then it was kinda like, okay.

Speaker 2

Got in, put it in my back pocket a little bit.

Speaker 2

Like, it was, like, kind of out of sight, out of mind.

Speaker 2

Like, it's a year away.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

And I was like but then I started getting the trail running.

Speaker 2

I went to TrailCon in California.

Speaker 2

I ran the Broken Arrow Loop.

Speaker 2

Like, I started getting you know, I was running up mountains around here in Provo.

Speaker 2

I just started doing more running.

Speaker 2

Now I had no training.

Speaker 2

Like, at that point, I wasn't working with you.

Speaker 2

I wasn't working with anybody.

Speaker 2

I was just kinda like, I'm an active guy.

Speaker 2

I'm a fit guy.

Speaker 2

I I'll just start running.

Speaker 2

And, and then I did, like, a 50 k at Bryce Canyon in September, and it went really well minus me bonking the last couple miles because I know I didn't have a fuel.

Speaker 2

I mean, if you if I so Cocodona had a gel basically every thirty minutes or roughly, k, with hit or miss a couple times.

Speaker 2

I don't think I had more than one gel in that 50 k.

Speaker 2

Like, I think I just was yeah.

Speaker 2

Like, I just was, like, eating whatever I had.

Speaker 2

It's like, my growth in this sport has been exponential.

Speaker 2

Okay?

Speaker 2

But, like, did that race.

Speaker 2

I did really well.

Speaker 2

I didn't mean I wasn't even trying to do well, and I I took, like, eighth or ninth place.

Speaker 2

Like, I was just like, ugh.

Speaker 2

I'll go do this race.

Speaker 2

Like, this is fun.

Speaker 2

So I was like, oh, I'm on a high.

Speaker 2

I know I I know what I'm doing.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

And then I did a 100 miler, and that went really bad.

Speaker 2

That was just not good for many reasons.

Speaker 2

But was big reasons, I just didn't know what I was doing.

Speaker 2

I didn't have anyone there to be like, hey.

Speaker 2

This is what's this is what it's like.

Speaker 2

And, you know, the 100 mile was super flat.

Speaker 2

Like, you know, people say, oh, was it because it was steeper?

Speaker 2

I think, no.

Speaker 2

Like and everyone's that's and what I'm saying.

Speaker 2

Like, a flat one's hard.

Speaker 2

A high climbing one, they're all hard.

Speaker 2

So, like, when people say, no, that's that's an easy 100 miler.

Speaker 2

That's baloney.

Speaker 2

Everything's hard.

Speaker 2

Okay?

Speaker 2

So I did this 100 miler.

Speaker 2

I like here's the foot doctor.

Speaker 2

I lose, like, toenails.

Speaker 2

I have, like, foot pain, knee pain.

Speaker 2

Like, it's just going crazy.

Speaker 2

So at mile 34 or whatever, I'm like, I'm out.

Speaker 2

And, like, kinda went into I don't wanna say, like, a low, but I was kinda like, you know what?

Speaker 2

I'm not running.

Speaker 2

I I talked to you at that point, and I think we we agreed upon, like, coaching.

Speaker 2

You were in a transition.

Speaker 2

We kinda got to where we were, and I was with everyday ultra then.

Speaker 2

And we were like, okay.

Speaker 2

I'm going to Germany.

Speaker 2

I'm gonna eat whatever I want.

Speaker 2

I'm gonna do whatever I want for the next month and a half.

Speaker 2

And when I get back, we're going full blown Cocodona training.

Speaker 2

And I needed that.

Speaker 2

I needed that mental break.

Speaker 2

I basically kinda didn't I mean, I ran like, I go run two or three miles and lift weights and do things, but didn't really do much for the next month and a half.

Speaker 2

Didn't do any trail running.

Speaker 2

Nothing.

Speaker 2

And then started working with you.

Speaker 2

And I still remember it is so vivid.

Speaker 2

My first long run, which I mean, it is a long run.

Speaker 2

It was two hours, but, like, I was like, oh, I'm doing a two hour run.

Speaker 2

Like, this is so long.

Speaker 2

Like, I had my sister-in-law with me, and, like, we were running in the snow.

Speaker 2

And I was like, I this is so cool.

Speaker 2

And it's just, like, crazy how, like, that also became, like, in my training in

Speaker 1

An easy run.

Speaker 2

Different.

Speaker 2

That became an easy run, you know, six weeks later.

Speaker 2

Like so, yeah, the journey was had highs and lows.

Speaker 2

And I really think, personally, for me, like, so thankful for you as a coach.

Speaker 2

But I think anyone out there looking for a coach, whether, you know, with everyday ultrarunner, Alyssa, or any coach, it's really important to have that support system.

Speaker 2

Because I can also text you and be like, I feel like crap.

Speaker 2

Or, like, am I doing this right?

Speaker 2

Like, you those insecurities are you know, it was really kinda fun.

Speaker 2

So I don't know.

Speaker 2

I think that was a long winded answer.

Speaker 1

没有。

No.

Speaker 1

That was amazing.

Speaker 1

And there's a couple of things that I want to touch on is, number one, do you have any idea in that buildup when you were kinda getting out of the mountains what your mileage was looking like per week?

Speaker 2

Oh, let me think.

Speaker 2

Three, six, nine, twelve, probably 20 or less, maybe, honestly.

Speaker 1

In that month when you were hanging out?

Speaker 1

Or I'm saying, like, before leading into the 50 k and the 100 miler, what do you

Speaker 2

think it was?

Speaker 2

Leading into the 50 k, probably 20 to 25 miles, like, honestly.

Speaker 2

Like, it wasn't much.

Speaker 2

I would go do one long run.

Speaker 2

So if people know Utah, I did Timpanogos, and I was 12 to 15 miles.

Speaker 2

So I did that, and then it would be three or four short fast runs.

Speaker 2

I'd be running a five k at a gym on a treadmill, do Orangetheory, and that's where I would do it.

Speaker 2

And I was like, kind of what I was doing.

Speaker 2

I never really thought about mileage, I guess.

Speaker 2

I don't know.

Speaker 2

I've never really thought about mileage.

Speaker 2

You've kind of helped me.

Speaker 2

I still it's like that chasing the miles, but yeah, that wasn't that was just I I didn't know what I was doing.

Speaker 2

I was just like, hey, I could go run this distance.

Speaker 2

Like, what the heck?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

但我

But I

Speaker 2

don't think I was ever trying to win a race.

Speaker 2

And I think it was just like completion.

Speaker 2

So I'm like, oh, I ran 25 miles this week.

Speaker 2

50 k is only 10 more miles.

Speaker 2

不错。

Cool.

Speaker 2

I'll go do that.

Speaker 2

Like, I

Speaker 1

don't know.

Speaker 1

And to be honest, in that 25 to 35 mile range is enough for a 50 k, especially if a lot of that running or at least some of that running is in the mountains where, you know, maybe it's slower miles, more time on feet.

Speaker 1

But definitely, I feel like there was a few times where, like, I got over 20 miles on some training runs, which is great.

Speaker 1

I mean, that's Yeah.

Speaker 2

I don't know.

Speaker 2

It's weird that that kind of timeframe is I don't know.

Speaker 2

I still feel like I'm foggy from Cocodona.

Speaker 2

I did ask my staff what year it was at one point when I was writing a prescription.

Speaker 2

I have a good friend, Christian Allen, which people may know the name, great, great runner.

Speaker 2

And he would say, Hey, go do this trail.

Speaker 2

And I'm like, Sweet, I'll go do that trail.

Speaker 2

And I got myself into some crazy trails.

Speaker 2

And then I see him, he's like, Oh, I'm like, That was hard.

Speaker 2

He's like, I told you that.

Speaker 2

I'm like, No, you didn't.

Speaker 2

You're slipping out.

Speaker 2

And it's hard because I never really knew how far they were.

Speaker 2

I because he would say, hey.

Speaker 2

Start here and go there.

Speaker 2

I'm like and he's like, oh, and it takes a couple hours.

Speaker 2

Well, yeah, maybe for someone who runs, you know, a two zero eight marathon or something, you know, you know, and runs.

Speaker 2

It didn't take me a couple hours.

Speaker 2

So let's put it that way.

Speaker 2

Let's just say a couple times the sun was setting.

Speaker 2

I didn't have a flashlight or headlamp.

Speaker 2

But, yeah, I I that area I don't yeah.

Speaker 2

I I probably did the longest run I did was probably, I think you're right.

Speaker 2

I probably about 18 to 20 miles, like, once or twice was probably the longest run I probably did during that time.

Speaker 1

Love it.

Speaker 1

So then you decide, hey.

Speaker 1

I'm gonna take this break.

Speaker 1

How important do you feel that was now looking back and how much work was coming your way?

Speaker 1

Do you think if you hadn't taken that break, you would have been able to work through all the training, or you would have hit a point of just like, I am really tired.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

不行。

No.

Speaker 2

I think I think I would 100% tell myself take that break again.

Speaker 2

I think I hit a wall for Cocodona training probably like four weeks out where I was just like, I just am tired of the training.

Speaker 2

Like, it just become like, was at beginning, it was fun.

Speaker 2

It was like, because we're pushing it and like, this excitement there.

Speaker 2

And then all of sudden, you start getting to back to back week long six, seven hour runs.

Speaker 2

And then I'm running the same trails over and over because when you have those long runs, you don't want to drive somewhere and then add another hour or two to that to then go at least for me, because I had two little kids.

Speaker 2

My wife's already mad that I'm running fifteen hours a week or whatever it was.

Speaker 2

And so that became really hard.

Speaker 2

So I think if I didn't take that break and even if I had just been, like, kinda just exercising and running and not, like, doing stuff, I think I would have crashed sooner or not crashed, but, like, kinda hit a a wall, and it would have made it hard.

Speaker 2

So for me, it was really great.

Speaker 2

I I came back, and I was excited.

Speaker 2

I still remember, like, when we started uploading all the things to Training Peaks and everything, figuring that out and being like, Okay, I gotta go do a thirty minute run and then do some lunges.

Speaker 2

It was really exciting for me.

Speaker 2

And now being on this break currently post Cocodona where I'm letting things heal and things go down, I'm kind of feeling that excitement again.

Speaker 2

I'm kind of excited to I looked at Train Peaks once and I was like, Never mind.

Speaker 2

So whatever you've been uploading, I really haven't looked at.

Speaker 2

I just because I've been like, No, I'm not doing it.

Speaker 2

I can't I just mentally and probably physically can't do a lot of what I need to do.

Speaker 2

But now I'm kind of getting excited.

Speaker 2

I'm like, Now I'm excited to see that again.

Speaker 2

I'm excited to see how we're going to build up again to something.

Speaker 2

So yeah, people, go on, take a break.

Speaker 1

I don't know.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 2

Have a Kit Kat.

Speaker 1

I yeah.

Speaker 1

I'm Diet Coke.

Speaker 1

I love

Speaker 2

this so lots of Diet Coke.

Speaker 1

Lots of Diet Coke.

Speaker 1

I love this because I think and I I'm at fault of this too where you feel the pressure of everyone else is getting back to running.

Speaker 1

I need to get back to it.

Speaker 1

People are posting their, how are they already doing this?

Speaker 1

I don't even feel ready.

Speaker 1

And Yeah.

Speaker 1

The biggest thing being physically here's the tricky thing is that from the outside, oftentimes, we can feel healed very quickly where people like, oh, I feel pretty good.

Speaker 1

I wanna get back into it.

Speaker 1

And that can be as soon as three, four, five days afterwards.

Speaker 2

是的。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

The but the internal piece and not only internally of your hormones, reregulating, sleep deprivation, all of that, but also your brain needs a break.

Speaker 1

It needs time to just be out of the constraint of structured training of having to do some I mean, you've done this incredibly hard thing, maybe the hardest thing you've ever done in your life.

Speaker 1

You need time to absorb that and maybe not do something that hard for a little while or even remotely close to that hard.

Speaker 2

Well yeah.

Speaker 2

And I and I think, you know, people are like, hey.

Speaker 2

I'm gonna go run 200 miles, turn my phone off, and I'm just not gonna think and just go.

Speaker 2

No.

Speaker 2

My mind was like, to keep me awake, to keep me going, keep me focused.

Speaker 2

People say, Well, did you forget portions of the course?

Speaker 2

I'm like, I can almost think of every step I took.

Speaker 2

You have to think about everything.

Speaker 2

I can think of that stupid rock I kicked on the third turnabout on Mingus.

Speaker 2

I can think about all these little things and yeah, your brain is fried.

Speaker 2

I mean, there's a reason why I was asking my staff what year it was.

Speaker 2

There's a reason why I still sometimes feel like I'm in a haze and we're pretty far out.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

That's interesting because that was actually my biggest reason why I've not done two hunters is because I don't remember much of Moab.

Speaker 1

It's like the opposite thing where I'm like, that's a bit scary how much I don't remember.

Speaker 1

Uh-oh.

Speaker 1

See, it's funny because like, I remember everything.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

我

I

Speaker 2

记得。

remember.

Speaker 2

I seriously, I've been writing it down.

Speaker 2

Like, I've been kinda, like, doing, like, a little, like, story so I can remember everything.

Speaker 2

And I it's kinda actually, I thought I was gonna forget more.

Speaker 2

Like, I honestly didn't think I was gonna remember.

Speaker 2

But, I mean, I did a lot of, like, night sections alone, and I think I mentally like, I think that was how it kept me going was thinking about every little thing more or less, like, kinda being there.

Speaker 1

And you had to be on more.

Speaker 1

I had very competent pacers throughout that could just think for me.

Speaker 1

So I think that allowed me to to shut my brain off more.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

If I think of the section that I can't remember well And this is I love my family.

Speaker 2

They did a great job, but I had someone who was more experienced pacing me.

Speaker 2

And yeah, that section, yeah, I don't remember.

Speaker 2

That's probably the one section where I'm like, well and then I had Shelby actually paced me next one.

Speaker 2

And those two sections, like, I couldn't tell you how long they were.

Speaker 2

I couldn't tell you where we were.

Speaker 2

I the only thing I remember with one section is we heard a generator for the full, like, four hours.

Speaker 2

Just this constant.

Speaker 2

And I'm like, where is this generator?

Speaker 2

Like, we're in this canyon.

Speaker 2

Like so, like yeah.

Speaker 2

So I I think if I didn't have to be on, like, personally, yeah, I would I would not have remembered much of anything.

Speaker 1

Interesting.

Speaker 1

I feel like there's a study of some kind there.

Speaker 1

So you take the break.

Speaker 1

We start working together.

Speaker 1

I'd love to hear some of the highs and lows that you faced in that let's see.

Speaker 1

It's, like, about a six month training period, five to six months.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

What what was kind of the, oh, I expected this to happen and then the, oh, wow.

Speaker 1

I did not foresee that being that challenging.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I mean, I think I went into it pretty prepared to do whatever you said, which I think was really good.

Speaker 2

The I luckily, I mean, not luckily for Utah, but we had a very mild winter, which really allowed me to do a lot of training that I probably otherwise wouldn't have been able to have done, like be outside as much because treadmills are horrible.

Speaker 2

But well, bad treadmills are horrible, which I had access to a lot of bad treadmills, not good treadmills.

Speaker 1

Good treadmills are great.

Speaker 1

Bad treadmills are not fun.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I actually I convinced an orange theory to let me run through the whole class, like two classes straight without getting off, which they typically wouldn't allow because they have good treadmills.

Speaker 2

I said and I could go run forever on them.

Speaker 2

But I go to, like, this little clubhouse over here, and my knees and legs would hurt.

Speaker 2

So yeah.

Speaker 2

Anyways but let's see.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

So I think there was a couple times, like, getting up and, like, having to run-in cold rain, like, where I'm like, I have to do this.

Speaker 2

This is the only time I can do this.

Speaker 2

Like, I am not an early runner morning runner.

Speaker 2

Like, I feel like a lot of runners are like, hey.

Speaker 2

I get up at five in the morning.

Speaker 2

I go run.

Speaker 2

I'm like, 10AM, 11AM.

Speaker 2

Hey.

Speaker 2

Let's go four in the afternoon.

Speaker 2

Like, hey.

Speaker 2

The weather's good.

Speaker 2

Let's go run.

Speaker 2

Like, that is me.

Speaker 2

Like, I'm not, when I don't when I can choose.

Speaker 2

Now if you say, hey.

Speaker 2

This is what we gotta do.

Speaker 2

I will do it, and I can totally improve it.

Speaker 2

I will go do whatever we need to do.

Speaker 2

But, like, there's a couple times where it's, like, early morning, cold kinda freezing rain, and I'm running up a hill.

Speaker 2

And the those I mean, they were kinda it was a mixed motion.

Speaker 2

Like, I didn't like it, but at the end, I was like, I did that.

Speaker 2

I'm kinda like Rocky.

Speaker 2

Like, that's cool.

Speaker 2

I think there was another low, kinda just like sometimes you would get out on a long four to six hour run, and I would just be depleted.

Speaker 2

It was the end of the week, whether it was depleted mentally or physically, and being like, Man, I only went 15 miles.

Speaker 2

And granted, I was climbing a mountain or something.

Speaker 2

And then I would look at some of these runners and be like, Oh, I did 120 miles this week.

Speaker 2

And I'm like, Oh, I did 59 miles this week.

Speaker 2

And I still remember there was one week I was chasing miles, and I was like and I think I got, like, 80 something miles that week, and it wasn't right for me.

Speaker 2

Like, that just like, I I it just wasn't right, but I felt so guilty that I wasn't doing this 100 mile weeks.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

And luckily, I have you.

Speaker 2

I actually work with a lot of runners who train very differently, that train low and high mileage.

Speaker 2

And so I talked to them, and it's still hard for me.

Speaker 2

I still wanna be that person that's like, I run a 100 miles this week, but I'm just not that person.

Speaker 2

That's just not how my body functions, I guess.

Speaker 2

So there was, like, some of those, like, kinda mental lows.

Speaker 2

And then, honestly, yeah, three, four weeks out, it was tough.

Speaker 2

I mean, another thing I went through, I thought I had a stress fracture.

Speaker 2

Got an MRI.

Speaker 2

Well, luckily, no stress fracture, but it led to say that I had a bone tumor, which not a serious bone tumor, but, like, an achondroma.

Speaker 2

And so, like, all these things, like, here I am, the foot doctor, right?

Speaker 2

And I think that was a big stress too.

Speaker 2

Being the foot doctor is a big stressor because people are like, Oh, you must have perfect feet.

Speaker 2

You must know how to do everything to your feet.

Speaker 2

And here I am dealing with peroneal tendonitis.

Speaker 2

I'm dealing with knee pain.

Speaker 2

I'm dealing with all these things.

Speaker 2

It's like and that's where I still remember I was running around the lake and I'm sitting there going like, and I didn't know what kind of tumor I had in my foot.

Speaker 2

I'm like, am I cutting my leg off?

Speaker 2

And I'm like, well, I have to run Cocodona first, then we can cut my leg off.

Speaker 2

Like, I'm going through these scenarios.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

And, you know, it it's crazy.

Speaker 2

I don't know.

Speaker 2

I I some of it was self my own self creating a low when I didn't need to, but some of it just happens based off of things you can't control.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

That was, that was such a tough moment when you're like, well, I think my foot's really messed up.

Speaker 1

And it's too weird.

Speaker 1

Luckily, it was benign.

Speaker 1

We didn't know that right away.

Speaker 1

But it's yeah.

Speaker 1

I mean, just because you have an expertise in cellulite doesn't mean your body's like, oh, he's a foot doctor.

Speaker 1

We're not gonna have any problems.

Speaker 1

That's not how it works.

Speaker 2

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 2

对

Yeah.

Speaker 2

没错

Yeah.

Speaker 2

确实

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And I think, you know, with the training piece, it was interesting.

Speaker 1

You know, whenever you take on an athlete, you're always figuring out, you know, how much stress is too much stress and how much is enough.

Speaker 1

And with you, you know, you have kids, you have business, you have a lot going on in your life and pushing you to the point of, like, we have to hit this arbitrary number.

Speaker 1

And do I think that you could increase to a ninety, hundred mile week at some point?

Speaker 1

Possibly.

Speaker 1

I you know, that's not off the table by any means, but I don't that wasn't what was best for you at this time as a, a newer runner, in ultramarathons, but also just with the time constraints.

Speaker 1

And, absolutely, we want to push ourselves, but it's also like there's a point at which pushing yourself is not productive.

Speaker 1

And so with you, I was always kinda monitoring the, like, okay.

Speaker 1

You know, we went to the six hour long run, etcetera, but, like, we we need to balance things where, hey.

Speaker 1

We're gonna push a little bit more during the week.

Speaker 1

We're gonna back it off.

Speaker 1

So I think that you did such a great job of I mean, you followed everything, but also

Speaker 2

green marks all across it.

Speaker 2

Have, like, one red or one yellow.

Speaker 1

不用。

No.

Speaker 1

You absolutely did.

Speaker 1

And I knew you would do that.

Speaker 1

So part of my job was to make sure that it was sustainably challenging for you, but not to the point where it's like you couldn't show up for your family.

Speaker 1

You couldn't show up for your business.

Speaker 1

And I think that, yeah, it's really easy to get caught up in the narrative of you have to do something.

Speaker 1

It's like, no.

Speaker 1

Actually, you can be very successful doing what's best for you, not what everyone else is doing.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

And and everyone's so different.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

Like like you were saying, like, constraints and everything.

Speaker 2

Some people I mean and I think a lot of times we follow a lot of professional runners whose their job is running.

Speaker 2

So what are they going to do and have the time to do is run.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

And I don't have that time.

Speaker 2

没错。

No.

Speaker 2

And you did a masterful job.

Speaker 2

You saying what you were trying to do is what you did, and that's how I felt, which is really cool.

Speaker 2

It's kind of fun to hear that because I'm like, Oh, hey, good job.

Speaker 2

That's that's how I felt.

Speaker 2

So good job.

Speaker 2

Kudos.

Speaker 1

Thanks.

Speaker 1

I mean, that's that sometimes I get it better than others.

Speaker 1

And part of that was communication of you were really good at being very honest about how you were feeling, which I appreciated.

Speaker 1

And also I loved seeing when you'd be like, well, started out tired or, like, I didn't feel good in this part, but then it came around and I really enjoyed that.

Speaker 1

And so that is a lot of good feedback for me to be like, okay.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

The fatigue is building, but also he's okay.

Speaker 1

We can keep kinda on this track or the point where it's like, I am just mentally fried.

Speaker 1

It's like, we're so close.

Speaker 1

Just a little bit longer.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I was getting there.

Speaker 2

I had a I literally had to drive to a national park and go for a run.

Speaker 2

Like, I just, like, could not look at the same rocks up a canyon that I had been going up.

Speaker 2

I was like, I need something different.

Speaker 2

And yeah, it happens.

Speaker 2

And yeah, no.

Speaker 2

I even got to the point where I was drawing Easter eggs with my Strava in a park.

Speaker 2

I was making grid patterns on the roads.

Speaker 2

You kinda go a little loopy when you you gotta get creative.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

不对。

No.

Speaker 1

I loved the Easter egg.

Speaker 0

Before we dive into this episode, I always get asked the question, how do you make finding and mapping running routes a lot easier?

Speaker 0

Because it's really important to map your running routes to get in the right route for your training, whether you're doing a long run that's supposed to mock your specific race that you're doing or a speed workout where you want to make sure you have some nice areas to go fast on, you want to make sure that you can make routes easily so it's not taking too much time and you know exactly where you're going.

Speaker 0

And so for me going into Western States 100, I had to find routes that were really runnable, that had a lot of climbing, a lot of descending, and also that were hot.

Speaker 0

So what I did was I use an app called Footpath where I can open up the map around me, I can look around trails, and I can ultimately map out routes at my fingertip to see the elevation gain and descent, see approximately how long it'll take me, what the mileage is.

Speaker 0

And then once I find the route, I can export it to my watch so I can have it on the watch directly.

Speaker 0

And I can also have it on my phone, even in an offline mode where I don't need service.

Speaker 0

And if I ever want to do a speed workout for Western States and I want to go on bike paths, there is even a bike path overlay where I can find bike paths that I didn't even know existed in the area where I live.

Speaker 0

So I can do those speed workouts as well.

Speaker 0

Footpath

And so Footpath is an incredible app.

Speaker 0

It's an app that I use to make finding and running routes a lot easier.

Speaker 0

Speaker 0

Speaker 0

Also want to give a huge shout out to Janji, which is my favorite trail running apparel on the market, especially when it comes to the hotter months that are coming up.

Speaker 0

You need trail running equipment that is going to help to keep you cool and also feel good without chafing you out there.

Speaker 0

And that's why I wear Janji for all my hot races, including Western States one hundred and Badwater one hundred thirty five coming up.

Speaker 0

My favorite items are the Run All Day Tee, which keeps me nice and cool and also does not chafe me, and the two in one multi shorts, which again does not chafe and I love the compression liner because it's nice and comfortable even when I get soaked through the sweat and topical cooling out there.

Speaker 0

And it's got pockets for storage, which are really, really useful.

Speaker 0

So if you want to shop those and all my other favorite items at Janji, go to janji.com/everydayultra to check out my favorites.

Speaker 0

Go grab them, go give them a try and make sure that you're upgrading your apparel with Janji.

Speaker 0

Alright, everyone, let's get back in the episode.

Speaker 1

So we get through the hard part of trading.

Speaker 1

You did the training run of the first 37 miles.

Speaker 1

It's really hot and challenging.

Speaker 2

Oh, that stunk, that first 37 miles.

Speaker 2

That's a low.

Speaker 1

Was it better during the race?

Speaker 2

Oh yeah, the race was amazing.

Speaker 2

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Was great temperature.

Speaker 2

Mean, I tried to go slow, and I'm being totally honest.

Speaker 2

I was not pushing it.

Speaker 2

Still came in two hours earlier than I thought I was

Speaker 1

gonna I figured.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It was I knew that would happen.

Speaker 2

I and, like, I wasn't trying.

Speaker 2

I and I honestly don't think I ever ran harder than I did on the training run, but the difference was is I didn't have those moments where, like, I had to sit there and stop because I was so hot or out of water because I wasn't drink I didn't have to drink as much.

Speaker 2

I didn't feel like when I did the training run, was much hotter.

Speaker 2

Was drinking more.

Speaker 2

Also I ran out of water.

Speaker 2

There was a lot of things like that.

Speaker 2

This one, it was just more like it was hard, but it was like I don't know.

Speaker 2

It but, yeah, the training run would there's a low.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It's tough.

Speaker 1

It's you're not going into it fresh like you are for the beginning of the race.

Speaker 1

You're having to carry a bit more water because there's a few less aid stations.

Speaker 1

It was way hotter for the training run than it was for the the race was other than, I think, a rainstorm on Tuesday night seem like, I don't think you could have gotten better weather for Cocodona.

Speaker 2

I it's It was match.

Speaker 2

I don't know how we got so lucky.

Speaker 2

It was really awesome.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So how we're getting close to the race.

Speaker 1

You're getting to, you know, the day before at the pickup.

Speaker 1

How are you and Maggie feeling?

Speaker 2

Well, let's see.

Speaker 2

So we actually went down to Moab, Utah, like, the Thursday before the race because my wife had chat a conference down there.

Speaker 2

And so the goal for me was just to, like, lay in bed, do, like, a couple shakeout runs, which I was excited to do and somewhere new.

Speaker 2

I got, like, some massages.

Speaker 2

I was just, like, trying to, like, chill out.

Speaker 2

But the problem was at this conference, we knew a bunch of people.

Speaker 2

So every time we go to dinner for with people at the conference, it's like, oh, you have this race.

Speaker 2

Oh, and it was just, like, this constant, like, kinda poke and, like, like, Oh my goodness, are you ready?

Speaker 2

Are you ready?

Speaker 2

Are you ready?

Speaker 2

And it's like, I hope I'm ready.

Speaker 2

My car is full of thousands of dollars of gear that I bought over the last year and all this money I've spent.

Speaker 2

It's amazing how just so much stuff.

Speaker 2

I had my bed in the back of the car, had everything set up.

Speaker 2

And so we were going through that and I was kind of by myself because Maggie was at her conference and I was just hanging out and I had brought a Nintendo Switch to play games.

Speaker 2

Did all this and I couldn't do it.

Speaker 2

Honestly this is probably not good, but I was scrolling on Instagram.

Speaker 2

I needed something to just not really think about.

Speaker 2

And I didn't I mean, I tried to sleep and I kept trying to take naps, but it was hard.

Speaker 2

But then we drove down, what, Saturday, and it started getting kind of real as you're like, we're driving and we drove into Flagstaff, and then we actually got pasta at the base of Eldon.

Speaker 2

And it was kind of like, That's And I know the course At this time, I'd driven the course twice, once crew and Shelby, and then me and Maggie had driven the whole course, which probably wasn't the best thing to do.

Speaker 2

That freaked me out.

Speaker 2

But, because I realized how far 250 miles is.

Speaker 2

But, like, I knew.

Speaker 2

So I was like, oh, I know I'm going there.

Speaker 2

I know I'm going there.

Speaker 2

And so we're eating pasta, and I was kinda freaking out.

Speaker 2

We got to our hotel, then Sunday, we just took really easy.

Speaker 2

And and I'm religious.

Speaker 2

We actually went to church, Sunday morning, and it was actually really good for me, to just like no one knew who I was there.

Speaker 2

No one knew what I was doing.

Speaker 2

I was just in an hour of a service.

Speaker 2

And that really calmed me down, which was really good.

Speaker 2

And then I went to bid pickup and it got kind of real there.

Speaker 2

I saw a lot of people.

Speaker 2

I saw you.

Speaker 2

I saw Shelby.

Speaker 2

I saw a lot of people that I knew.

Speaker 2

The fun and cool and bad thing about now being on podcasts and people knowing who I am, they now know who I am and start talking to me, which is really cool.

Speaker 2

Love talking to people.

Speaker 2

Please keep talking to me.

Speaker 2

But it was just like, there was just more conversation and peep you know, that I was it started getting me quite nervous.

Speaker 2

And so actually, was like, got got through all that.

Speaker 2

I was like, you know what?

Speaker 2

I'm ready to get out of here.

Speaker 2

And so we actually went to a movie, kicked the feet up, and then we went to bed early and slept as much as I could.

Speaker 2

But yeah, it was nerve wracking.

Speaker 2

I think Maggie was fairly nervous.

Speaker 2

She was I think she was nervous, not nervous.

Speaker 2

I think she was still a little oblivious to what was coming her way.

Speaker 2

I won't lie.

Speaker 2

She was like because I was like, Kay, you'll start the race.

Speaker 2

She's like, Okay.

Speaker 2

I'll drop you off, cheer you on.

Speaker 2

I'm going to go sleep.

Speaker 2

I might go do a little shopping, and then I'll meet you up at and I told her, I'm like, Well, you have to keep track because you never know what's going to happen.

Speaker 2

And I kept telling her, I might be early.

Speaker 2

It could happen.

Speaker 2

And she's like, Okay.

Speaker 2

Well, then I was super early and actually had a hustle up there, which led to other things.

Speaker 2

But I think there was a little oblivious on her side.

Speaker 2

And now if you talk to her, she'd like, Oh yeah, that's not how I would have done that.

Speaker 2

In fact, when we were driving home, as much as she doesn't want me doing this race again, at least what she says.

Speaker 2

She's like, well, if we did do it, we would fly down there.

Speaker 2

We would you know, it's funny how I think we look back and go, these are the things we would do different.

Speaker 2

And it's funny.

Speaker 2

She goes through and it's like, I would do this differently.

Speaker 2

We would do this differently.

Speaker 2

And she's like, Well, you can't do the race again, but I would do this differently.

Speaker 2

And I'm like, Me too.

Speaker 2

And so I don't know.

Speaker 2

Maybe that's me and her personality of just trying to continually make things better.

Speaker 2

But yeah, we were fairly nervous.

Speaker 2

I mean, I was nervous.

Speaker 2

I think she was nervous, but more nervous just about my mental health.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Which is fair.

Speaker 1

Also, we should say that Maggie, both of you are doctors.

Speaker 1

So you're very, I feel like discipline.

Speaker 1

You know, just you know what you're doing and I think always trying to improve.

Speaker 1

So you get off from the start.

Speaker 1

You're on your journey.

Speaker 1

I'd love we've had a lot of episodes about Cocodona.

Speaker 1

So Mhmm.

Speaker 1

People kind of know the race, etcetera.
