Speaker 0

I'm your host, Joe Corcione, and thank you so much for listening.

Speaker 0

Now let's get into it.

Speaker 0

Before we dive in this episode, I always get asked the question, how do you make finding and mapping running routes a lot easier?

Speaker 0

Because it's really important to map your running routes to get in the right route for your training, whether you're doing a long run that's supposed to mock your specific race that you're doing or a speed workout where you want to make sure you have some nice areas to go fast on, you wanna make sure that you can make routes easily so it's not taking up too much time and you know exactly where you're going.

Speaker 0

And so for me going into Western States 100, I had to find routes that were really runnable, that had a lot of climbing, a lot of descending, and also that were hot.

Speaker 0

So what I did was I use an app called Footpath where I can open up the map around me, I can look around trails, and I can ultimately map out routes with my fingertip to see the elevation gain and descent, see approximately how long it'll take me, what the mileage is.

Speaker 0

And then once I find the route, I can export it to my watch so I can have it on the watch directly, and I can also have it on my phone even in an offline mode where I don't need service.

Speaker 0

And if I ever want to do a speed workout for Western States and I want to go on bike paths, there is even a bike path overlay where I can find bike paths that I didn't even know existed in the area where I live.

Speaker 0

So I can do those speed workouts as well.

Speaker 0

Footpath

And so Footpath is an incredible app.

Speaker 0

它帮我轻松找到并规划跑步路线,你们也可以试试,访问 footpathapp.com/everydayultra,免费体验所有高级功能30天。

It's an app that I use to make finding and running routes a lot easier, and you can give it a try as well too with all the lead features by going to footpathapp.com/everydayultra and get free lead features for thirty days.

Speaker 0

And if you wanna upgrade after for the whole year, it's only $24 for the entire year.

Speaker 0

So super, super affordable.

Speaker 0

The point is this, is you wanna make sure that you are mapping your routes really, really easy and to have those routes in a way where you can have it even when service goes out as it does for many of us in the outdoors.

Speaker 0

如果你想试试,就去 footpathapp.com/everydayultra。

So if you wanna give it a try, go to footpathapp.com/everydayultra.

Speaker 0

Welcome to another episode of the EVERYDAY Ultra podcast.

Speaker 0

I'm your host, Joe Corcione, and I'm super pumped for this episode because when I think of people who are not only superwomen but superhuman, I think of today's guest because I truly say, like, it's so cool.

Speaker 0

Obviously, on this podcast, we've had on elite athletes and people who are full time athletes.

Speaker 0

But I truly believe that the people who are, like, the real heroes of the sport are the people who do these races, and they have full time jobs.

Speaker 0

They have families.

Speaker 0

They're married.

Speaker 0

They have tons of other responsibilities outside of running, and they find a way to get it done.

Speaker 0

And what's super cool is our guest is the embodiment of that, but not she's not just getting it done.

Speaker 0

She's not just doing 50 k's or 50 miles, which, obviously, those are great.

Speaker 0

They're awesome.

Speaker 0

Not diminishing on that.

Speaker 0

But she has done two two hundred mile races, one of them being the Moab two forty and also Bigfoot two hundred as well too.

Speaker 0

And, actually, she's gearing up to do Tahoe two hundred in just about six days, five days from now?

Speaker 0

Five days from now, actually, from the date of this recording.

Speaker 0

And by the time this is out, she's already on her way out there to do the big loop around Lake Tahoe.

Speaker 0

But she is an incredible athlete who's been running ultras for years.

Speaker 0

She's super consistent.

Speaker 0

I actually did coach her, and now she works with Coach Liz on our team here at Everyday Ultra.

Speaker 0

But one of the things that I appreciated so much about her is not only her enthusiasm and willing to learn, but so freaking consistent.

Speaker 0

And she would tell me all the time, she's like, I'm traveling to Salt Lake this week.

Speaker 0

I'm traveling here.

Speaker 0

Like, I'm doing all this stuff.

Speaker 0

I have all these, like, commitments with my kids and everything, but I would still log in to Training Peaks and everything would be green.

Speaker 0

And I was like, this is so awesome.

Speaker 0

And it speaks to all the success that she's had at Moab, Bigfoot, many other races she's done, and how she's also so successful as a mother, as a wife, as an employee, and all the things that she does.

Speaker 0

And so so excited to have her on to talk about her background and how she does it all so that if you are in the same position where you wanna chase these big goals and you have a lot going on in life, Sarah Normand is gonna be the inspiration for you to help you find that way because she's in herself.

Speaker 0

Sarah,

So Sarah, welcome to the show.

Speaker 0

So excited to have you on and really, really stoked to chat about all these things with you.

Speaker 1

Thank you so much for having me.

Speaker 1

This is such an honor.

Speaker 1

I've been listening to you for years.

Speaker 1

I've had the privilege of working with you, And it is just such a treat to finally be here and have this great conversation.

Speaker 1

So thanks for having me.

Speaker 0

Absolutely.

Speaker 0

And I kind of told you this too when I invited you on the podcast.

Speaker 0

I always think about is the definition of Everyday Ultra, and it's you.

Speaker 0

You are the definition of Everyday Ultra.

Speaker 0

Going in there and doing your best every single day, not just as an athlete, but in all the areas of life.

Speaker 0

And so I think that's just such a quality that I think not only is going to resonate with a lot of people, but one that I just admire, respect, and one that just always blows me away in the most positive way of how you're able to get this all done too.

Speaker 0

And I want to talk about that and how you manage everything.

Speaker 0

But what was what was your entry point like in the sport?

Speaker 0

Like, talk to us about, like, the story of how you got into this crazy world of ultrarunning and then even, you know, into going to your third 200 mile race this weekend.

Speaker 0

Like, that's that's so amazing.

Speaker 1

It is.

Speaker 1

And I will say, like, I really love the 200 miler.

Speaker 1

Like, I know that's not question, but that to me feels just such a great place.

Speaker 1

I love this distance, love that community.

Speaker 1

But as far as getting into ultras, I've been running So probably like many of your listeners, started as a road runner.

Speaker 1

So did road running and I still do for I've done that for a number of years.

Speaker 1

Countless marathons, I'm not even sure, twenty, thirty marathons and many halves.

Speaker 1

And it wasn't until early, probably 2022, my friend and I, we actually went to hike Mount Kilimanjaro.

Speaker 1

And we hiked Kilimanjaro and got back and went down the rabbit hole of hiking and fastpacking and came across, I wish I knew, I came across some article though, and it was talking about Bigfoot and that just got me hooked.

Speaker 1

And I'm the type of person who is kind of like all or nothing.

Speaker 1

And I had done, like I said, marathons at that point.

Speaker 1

I just did this big hike in Africa, came across this article and I'm like, that's what I want to do next.

Speaker 1

I want to learn everything about this.

Speaker 1

It just seems like such a cool, fun adventure and hats off to Destination Trails.

Speaker 1

They do incredible marketing.

Speaker 1

You watch those videos and you're like, yes, I can do that.

Speaker 1

I'm going to do that.

Speaker 1

And so just got totally hooked.

Speaker 1

And yeah, since that was back in Well, '24 is when I did Bigfoot.

Speaker 1

So yeah, for the past few years, I've just been upping the distance, but I will say my longest distance prior to Big Foot two hundred was just 50 miles.

Speaker 1

And I don't say just, but I mean, that's a pretty sizable jump from 50 to 200.

Speaker 1

So yeah, I just took that time to learn more about the sport and learn about trails, I will also say that was a huge learning curve because, again, being a road runner, have a lot of experience doing that.

Speaker 1

And then hiking, of course, is similar to trail running, but it's still very different.

Speaker 1

And my first few trail races was a very humbling experience.

Speaker 1

And so just really trying to learn all of the different elements of trail running and the distance and putting it all together, that was kind of the early milestones, I guess, of my running journey into trails.

Speaker 0

That's so awesome that Big Foot was the goal from the jump.

Speaker 0

Including myself, a lot of athletes usually get started in the sport.

Speaker 0

Targeting a 50 ks is the first thing.

Speaker 0

But for you, Bigfoot, that was the pinnacle when you first started to get into trail running, correct?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

没错。

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 1

I had done one other trail race, which was a 25 ks.

Speaker 1

So I went from one twenty five ks to Bigfoot.

Speaker 1

That was my two trail races up until then.

Speaker 1

It was Oh my gosh.

Speaker 1

I say learning curve.

Speaker 1

There was a huge learning curve going into Bigfoot, but it was incredible.

Speaker 0

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 0

And obviously, we started working together after you did Big Foot, but just knowing who you are and just knowing the dedication, I can totally see you being able to pave that path.

Speaker 0

And you mentioned that the first few trail races that you did were humbling.

Speaker 0

Bigfoot?

I think every single ultrarunner, again, including myself, can relate of our first What were the lessons, I guess, that you learned in those first experiences that helped you to kind of guide your path towards Big Foot?

Speaker 0

And the reason why I listened to this is because we do have a lot of people listening who either they're in road background or they're just ultra curious or trail curious, and maybe these lessons that they can take from your first experiences to help them as they start to build up on the trails.

Speaker 1

So my lessons were definitely that pacing for starters.

Speaker 1

So if you do whatever your road pace is, it's likely until your experience not going to translate to the trails like one for one, right?

Speaker 1

You're a pace for pace.

Speaker 1

So that was a huge learning.

Speaker 1

Just the gear, that was a huge, like going on a road out for a five mile, six mile run out on the road is very different even than five or six miles on the trail.

Speaker 1

So just the gear, the pacing, the nutrition, I mean, I think it's all of the different components that really make trail running unique is what I was slowly starting to learn.

Speaker 1

In roads, I've always just moved quickly through the water stops.

Speaker 1

And one of the things I love and I know you have to be efficient through aid stations, but I think there's this different sense of community in trail running.

Speaker 1

And so stopping with thanking the volunteers and even just asking a couple of questions and chatting more with the folks, I was realizing that with the trail community, you have more conversations when you're out on the trails and you get to know people.

Speaker 1

And that to me was just really just such a unique experience that I didn't get from road running and marathon running.

Speaker 1

So yeah, I applied that to my races.

Speaker 1

And I think that's how I found success, especially in the first 200 because it's hard.

Speaker 1

These 200 distances are hard.

Speaker 1

And I give a lot of the credit to completing that into the community that I found along the way, the volunteers, the friends that I've met.

Speaker 1

In fact, one of them will be at Tahoe with me.

Speaker 1

And so just being able to continue those relationships and meet with different people, I think is really unique.

Speaker 0

That's so cool.

Speaker 0

And it's awesome too, because when I did Tahoe, as you know this, at Village Green, I got to meet two of your very close friends in the and trail it was so cool.

Speaker 0

I know you were gearing up to run 100 with them.

Speaker 0

It's so cool to see those friendships just develop over time and make the journey meaningful and getting to learn and then helping each other.

Speaker 0

And so it's so cool to see you taking that and see you implementing that on your process all the way to Bigfoot and such.

Speaker 0

So in terms of doing the you did a 50 mile race, then that was their longest before the 200 miler.

Speaker 0

I love that, by the way, because I've always said many times in this podcast, and I say this many times to athletes, is there is no set plan way of distances that you need to do if you want to do a specific distance.

Speaker 0

As long as you give yourself time and train for it and everything.

Speaker 0

So during that initial period, what was that build like up to your first 200 miler?

Speaker 0

I'm assuming it's a lot of uncharted territory.

Speaker 0

Again, this is for people listening.

Speaker 0

This is before we started So working even I haven't known too much of the details into it besides all the stuff that we went for when we first started coaching.

Speaker 0

But what was that build like?

Speaker 0

And what helped you to gain the confidence of going for that 200, even though not doing a 100 mile before?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I So Oh, my watch.

Speaker 1

Like I never This might sound I never doubted myself of even getting to the finish line of Bigfoot.

Speaker 1

So that was just the mindset going into it.

Speaker 1

I really believed unless something really tragic happened, I was going to finish that race.

Speaker 1

And so I think just as that reminder in my day to day training, everything I'm doing is helping me just be prepared for getting to that starting line.

Speaker 1

And then that's the victory lap, even though it's a very long victory lap.

Speaker 1

That's just the victory lap and everything.

Speaker 1

And so starting with training for Big Foot, it was very much a lot of learning curves, like figuring out a pack.

Speaker 1

Like I had never worn a running vest before.

Speaker 1

And so figuring out what type of pack, how to even pack it and the hydration in that.

Speaker 1

And so being able to familiarize myself with, again, some of the gear that was just very new to me.

Speaker 1

Doing a combination of going up north, I live here in New Hampshire.

Speaker 1

And so being able to go out and run on the trails and get myself a bit more comfortable with just running at night and running on the trails and being in different types of terrain certainly helped me as well.

Speaker 1

And then I think just really giving myself permission not to have all the answers at the same time.

Speaker 1

It's okay to ask other runners or people in the community questions, but just use this as a learning block, not only for getting to that distance, but just of all of the things that come into trail running.

Speaker 1

So that was my philosophy going into Bigfoot, which I think paid off.

Speaker 1

I went to that starting line, I felt good, I was excited.

Speaker 1

My goal was really, I said this to my friends and my family, like, goal is just to finish with a smile.

Speaker 1

I wanted to feel good, go in and enjoy it.

Speaker 1

Because for me, it was truly an adventure of sacrificing time away from work, from family, and being out there and just enjoying this several day adventure through the Cascade Mountains, which was just epic in itself.

Speaker 0

So good.

Speaker 0

I love that.

Speaker 0

I love that process of learning and everything that you put into.

Speaker 0

And even the big thing that you said in the beginning is you had the belief no matter what, you were going get to that finish line.

Speaker 0

Where does that belief come from?

Speaker 0

And the reason why I asked this question is because I think that skill to be able to believe in yourself and have that unwavering conviction is so important for people to have.

Speaker 0

Because that self belief, when you do believe in yourself, you're more confident, you problem solve better, you kind of find your way out of situations that are really tough and difficult no matter what.

Speaker 0

And I know some people, even a younger version of myself, really struggle with that.

Speaker 0

And so for you, where does that come from?

Speaker 0

And what would be maybe your word of advice for people who maybe need some more belief in themselves So if they're going for the big

Speaker 1

a couple, I guess, responses to that.

Speaker 1

One is, I tell this to my kids all the time, you have to believe in yourself because it's not up for anybody else to have that same belief.

Speaker 1

And so I really try to carry that on the trails and even in my work and everything that I do.

Speaker 1

I just show up believing.

Speaker 1

And what's the worst that's going to happen?

Speaker 1

You have to pivot.

Speaker 1

It doesn't go according as planned.

Speaker 1

All of that's Okay.

Speaker 1

And so I really do try to take that approach with everything that I do.

Speaker 1

Think where it stems from is small wins.

Speaker 1

You've talked about this on

Speaker 0

你的

your

Speaker 1

show before as well.

Speaker 1

So it's like showing up to do a run when it's raining, showing up to do a run when it's cold or when you're tired or when you just have to squeeze it in because you're really busy because you've traveled, right?

Speaker 1

And so all of these little wins and little victories, I think help build that confidence over time and pays off in the long run.

Speaker 1

Whether it's showing up at a race or just the performance at a race, it's showing yourself that you can show up for yourself.

Speaker 1

You can do the hard work and in that you find your own confidence.

Speaker 0

I love that.

Speaker 0

I love that you talk about having the small wins because those things, when you show yourself that you can do all this.

Speaker 0

And I've seen you do some wild things.

Speaker 0

I've seen you do four or five hour runs on the treadmill, which, I mean, you've ran 100 on treadmill before, which I'm sure we'll talk about in this.

Speaker 0

That is wild in itself.

Speaker 1

That was harder than big fights.

Speaker 0

Yeah, I would guarantee that.

Speaker 0

I I know your new coach, Liz, I know she's doing it too.

Speaker 0

And so I'm like, You and Sarah are crazy like that.

Speaker 0

I mean, in the best way possible, of course.

Speaker 0

But kudos to you guys for doing that.

Speaker 0

But doing those things like that, and I know there's been times where we were working together where it was crazy weather, you'd be traveling all week, and you always got it done.

Speaker 0

Those are those moments where I can see you having this belief because you show yourself through the actions, which is so, so cool to see.

Speaker 0

The thing about Bigfoot too, those who aren't familiar of the year that Sarah ran Bigfoot, was actually a reroute year because there was crazy fires.

Speaker 0

And so the route was basically Was it two, two out max, three out max?

Speaker 1

From like the finish line to Cook Attack

Speaker 0

而且

and

Speaker 1

And then then, yeah, so it was an out and back like that.

Speaker 0

Run back twice.

Speaker 0

So how do you mentally wrap your head around that for this race?

Speaker 0

And that was happening days before.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Then we had an announcement.

Speaker 1

It was like, hold everything.

Speaker 1

Fires everywhere.

Speaker 1

It was wild.

Speaker 1

And we're like, are we even gonna have the race?

Speaker 1

It was that was crazy.

Speaker 0

Did that mentally phase you at all for the race?

Speaker 1

It did for not at the race, but leading up to it, I was angry for five

Speaker 0

minutes.

Speaker 0

而且

And

Speaker 1

that not me not angry at anybody in particular, but like, are we going to do?

Speaker 1

But again, destination trails was great.

Speaker 1

They had backup plans and contingencies and it would have been worse if they canceled it.

Speaker 1

I was grateful that we had a plan that we could still complete it because it's hard.

Speaker 1

You fly people out there.

Speaker 1

I live in New Hampshire.

Speaker 1

Again, to go all the way back to Washington would have been really difficult.

Speaker 1

So yeah, I just adapted and we made it work with Bigfoot.

Speaker 1

But as far as the race, no, I don't think it impacted anything.

Speaker 1

I will say I'm not a fan of out and backs.

Speaker 1

Mentally, that's pretty tough.

Speaker 1

Like seeing different things.

Speaker 1

It was really cool though, because we got to see the front of the pack many times, racers.

Speaker 1

So that was really special, being able to give them encouragement, them giving you encouragement.

Speaker 1

The hardest part was definitely at the turnaround point at the finish line.

Speaker 1

You're like, this sucks because I have to go and do the entire route all over again.

Speaker 1

You know exactly what to anticipate.

Speaker 1

So that was hard.

Speaker 1

And certainly people dropped at that point, but it was never in my mind to drop.

Speaker 1

You're just going to We had plenty of time.

Speaker 1

We weren't pushing cutoffs or anything, so we just sucked it up and went back out.

Speaker 0

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 0

Yeah, that is always I think any race where you go and see the finish line, first of all, there's always a high dropout rate because it's easy.

Speaker 0

Secondly, it's just mentally such a tough situation to be like, Man, everything's here and I got to go out.

Speaker 0

And in your case, you had to go out and do all the same stuff again, which is wild.

Speaker 0

And at that point too, so if it's a double outback, so at that point, that was your 100 mile mark, correct?

Speaker 0

对。

Yep.

Speaker 0

So you're also entering into this, you're already 50 miles deep into the unknown, but now you're going into like deeper unknown.

Speaker 0

You're just finding the first 100 miler.

Speaker 0

So you mentioned mentally not even giving yourself the option to quit, how was that last 100 miles?

Speaker 0

Was it tough?

Speaker 0

I guess walk us through that.

Speaker 0

I'm curious I to hear

Speaker 1

mean, it sounds weird.

Speaker 1

I never really had a terrible low in Bigfoot.

Speaker 1

MOAB was definitely different.

Speaker 1

That was a whole other game with MOAB.

Speaker 1

But Bigfoot, think the whole ignorance is bliss.

Speaker 1

I really embrace that because it was just I just felt so lucky to be there.

Speaker 1

Now, it was hard.

Speaker 1

There were times when I'm like, oh, my feet.

Speaker 1

I can't even feel my feet.

Speaker 1

But the mental framing that I went into this race of just appreciating everything, acknowledging that it was going to be hard, and knowing that there were times when you would feel low or nausea or tired.

Speaker 1

And just sounds cheesy, but just kind of welcoming it and accepting it and not trying to fight it like naming it like, yes, I'm tired, you're 150 miles in, of course, your feet hurt, of course, you're tired, of course, you want to like sleep for five minutes.

Speaker 1

And just giving myself permission shortly to feel and acknowledge those things.

Speaker 1

And then look at where I am, look at the people I'm with, acknowledging all that I'm doing all that I've already accomplished.

Speaker 1

And just thinking about the sacrifices that not only I made to be here, but like my husband who was at home and my kids who were at home and other people who were pacing me and friends who have come out.

Speaker 1

So just thinking of all of that helped ground me and I think just helped carry me to the finish line in many ways and not feeling, not having small little pity parties for myself along the way.

Speaker 1

And just, yeah, carried me to that finish.

Speaker 0

It even relates back to what you were saying before when, like, the course changed.

Speaker 0

Like, you were like, oh, like, I was angry for, five minutes.

Speaker 0

And then you just kind of reorient.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

Like, it's so the few really big things in there that I think is awesome is number one is like you let yourself feel it, which is very good.

Speaker 0

Like, I think it's way better than just saying like, oh, everything's okay.

Speaker 0

And then you bottle it up.

Speaker 0

And then in a 200 mile race, it comes out.

Speaker 0

It's like you even said during the race, like something happens, you let yourself feel it and then you just move on.

Speaker 0

And I think that speaks so much to why you didn't have these low moments in there because I think some low moments are just self created.

Speaker 0

Because you just go through this depths.

Speaker 0

Of course, there's sometimes that they aren't self created.

Speaker 0

And as we talk about Moab, you guys had the craziest weather out there, which we'll talk about for sure.

Speaker 0

I think that's such a genius move for you to orient your mind in that way to be like, Okay, this is the issue.

Speaker 0

This is where it is.

Speaker 0

Let's move on and keep it going.

Speaker 0

You got it done, which is so, so incredible.

Speaker 0

That is awesome to see.

Speaker 0

So you complete Bigfoot.

Speaker 0

You complete this 200 mile race.

Speaker 0

And I know there was some in between time, but I know the next goal for you was Moab two forty.

Speaker 0

That was the next big goal.

Speaker 0

And that's where you and I, we linked up.

Speaker 0

And we'd gone back and forth on Instagram.

Speaker 0

We were chatting for a while.

Speaker 0

And then eventually you came on and we started working together.

Speaker 0

And you were entering the phase of training in someone's career where I think is the most exciting, which is optimization.

Speaker 0

It's like you got the experience now, and you came to me, you're like, I want to tighten things up and everything.

Speaker 0

So what were the things that you really wanted to go into Moab differently with?

Speaker 0

Because I think this is such a cool way to look into how to look at to take things to the next level of whatever that might mean for any person.

Speaker 0

So was your intent doing Bigfoot and then all of a sudden, okay, I'm gonna go into Moab in this different So

Speaker 1

with Bigfoot, like I said, I was there just for the full experience.

Speaker 1

I think I talked to every single person, every single volunteer and had five to ten minute conversations with everybody.

Speaker 1

I optimized nothing.

Speaker 1

I just enjoyed every single second.

Speaker 0

It was great.

Speaker 1

It was great.

Speaker 1

And that was exactly the goal.

Speaker 1

I did not care about time.

Speaker 1

I just was there and I was present.

Speaker 1

With Moab, I definitely wanted to shift to feel more or to be more efficient in my work.

Speaker 1

So that's everything from aid stations to just moving more with purpose to, we talked about even just shuffling more, not just walking when there's a lot of runnable parts through Moab.

Speaker 1

So taking all of that in and building it into the plan.

Speaker 1

And so I don't have to run the full two forty plus miles, right?

Speaker 1

But I can move much more with purpose and more efficiently through all of these small little adjustments, like I said, by just having my gear and fuel more dialed in and having my aid station transitions more dialed in.

Speaker 1

And so applying that, I certainly it definitely helped.

Speaker 1

I'll say the weather threw me off this year with Moab.

Speaker 1

So I do feel like I was being efficient and doing all of those things.

Speaker 1

And there was a lot that I couldn't control with the weather this year that did cause me to slow down and take more time in some of the aid stations with just in spite of the rain that we had.

Speaker 1

But that was what I applied going into Moab.

Speaker 1

And I feel like I was really proud of that experience because there were a lot of lows like I didn't have any, like I said, lows and Bigfoot.

Speaker 1

Moab, I definitely had more of those and I think it was a combination of like the weather and very new terrain.

Speaker 1

Like I am not a desert runner, I'm more comfortable in the mountains.

Speaker 1

I have more experience there.

Speaker 1

And so, taking that into consideration, I had a lot to learn, but at the other side, I felt proud of that performance.

Speaker 0

Oh, so good.

Speaker 0

I wanted to dive into Moab and all the stories in there too.

Speaker 0

But one of the things that in the lead up to it, you mentioned wanting to optimize, wanting to be more efficient, everything was increasing durability.

Speaker 0

That was a big thing.

Speaker 0

At EVERYDAYULTRA, we're always about focusing on durability as one of the things to be better.

Speaker 0

With durability comes more volume.

Speaker 0

And I remember looking at, when we were working together, looking at the volume that we had done versus the volume going into Bigfoot.

Speaker 0

I was like, Dang, we progressed pretty big.

Speaker 0

But let's go back to all the other stuff you have going on.

Speaker 0

You have a full time job, you have kids, you're married.

Speaker 0

A lot of stuff in there too.

Speaker 0

So in this new phase where we were doing a lot more volume, more volume than you had done on a consistent basis, what is your playbook for navigating that with life and everything?

Speaker 0

Talk to us about that.

Speaker 0

For the person who maybe is either here, A, maybe skeptical that they can get it in or B, are struggling on like, Man, how do I get this in?

Speaker 0

Or even C, they are doing it, but they maybe realize that they could potentially shift things around a little bit better for them.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I mean, I feel like anybody can accomplish any goals that they have, whether running or something different.

Speaker 1

I truly, truly believe that.

Speaker 1

I'm like many of the listeners, you said, I work full time, I have kids, I have pets, I travel a lot.

Speaker 1

I mean, I think I was gone, I think it was like close to like ninety days last year, ninety three days.

Speaker 1

I travel quite a bit when I think of all of my responsibilities.

Speaker 1

So it is just a matter of prioritizing.

Speaker 1

I wouldn't even say prioritizing running.

Speaker 1

It's prioritizing yourself to think about how you want to achieve some of these things.

Speaker 1

And it is a little bit of a give and take.

Speaker 1

I found that there were days where I would just have to kind of run a little bit shorter.

Speaker 1

If it's scheduled for sixty minutes, well, maybe it was forty five or fifty.

Speaker 1

And that had to be Okay that day.

Speaker 1

I reminded myself that I'm not going to drop out of a race because one day I ran 10 or 15 shorter.

Speaker 1

And that is Okay.

Speaker 1

And then there's other times where it's like, Okay, my husband has to pick up dinner because I'm just too tired to cook.

Speaker 1

So it's really just about balancing.

Speaker 1

For me, it was about balancing those priorities and just planning, building them into my calendar and planning.

Speaker 1

Like for me, I'm an early runner.

Speaker 1

I go out early because then there's nothing that can interrupt me.

Speaker 1

And so, I think it's prioritizing what's important to you, building it into your calendar, and then giving yourself permission when things have to when you have to pivot, whether that's the run itself, which hopefully we don't have to pivot too much, but or if there's other areas and aspects of your life and just being okay with that.

Speaker 1

And listening to yourself, listening to your body, listening to how you feel.

Speaker 0

Yeah, I love that flexibility aspect because I always talk about the concept of flexible discipline where sometimes for very busy people, doing the plan as prescribed isn't always the best option amidst And being able to move things around accordingly to not only schedule, like you said, how you feel is really good.

Speaker 0

Maybe dive deeper into that.

Speaker 0

Can you give some examples of some times where maybe how based on how you felt or travel that you move things around that you felt were super optimal decisions that helped you to not only obviously optimize the training, but also make sure you're there in the priorities life if someone's maybe like, How do I exactly do

Speaker 1

这个?

this?

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

No, that's great because there were many times when I had to do that.

Speaker 1

So, I mean, you're working with a coach or even if you're not and you just download something from the internet, there are certain workouts that you're supposed to do.

Speaker 0

对于

And for

Speaker 1

me, as you know, there were days when I'm like, Okay, I'm traveling today.

Speaker 1

I'm taking the red eye home.

Speaker 1

I'm supposed to run a speed workout tomorrow.

Speaker 1

And you're like, No, no, no, let's not do that.

Speaker 1

So moving that calendar to maybe doing a rest day or an easy run was much more efficient for myself and just being able to be flexible with those types of workouts, you can still get it all in.

Speaker 1

And so there were times when I would shift my long run to a Friday and just being flexible with whatever's prescribed as well allows people, I think allows you to accomplish more within your run.

Speaker 1

You can change things accordingly to fit your schedule just based on other commitments that you have.

Speaker 0

Yeah, I love that.

Speaker 0

And it's one of those things too, kind of going back to the example I was mentioning of doing the plan as is, Like that speed workout on that day, you could have gone in super cooked and it's like, you're not even getting the quality of the workout that's needed.

Speaker 0

Whereas if you move it to another day where you're home and you're recovered, you have a day to relax, then you can hit that hard and get the fitness gains.

Speaker 0

And that's what I think is one of your biggest strengths is being able to listen to your body and knowing when you can show up for the right workouts optimally.

Speaker 0

And I think that was such an awesome thing that I saw on the Moab block.

Speaker 0

You do really well.

Speaker 0

And I think that accounted for a lot of the gains that you saw in training, which is super, super cool to see on there too.

Speaker 0

From a logistical standpoint, you mentioned things like, Hey, some nights we'll pick up dinner, some nights there.

Speaker 0

Do you have a scheduling system or something that you do to make sure you're getting in, not just the running, but everything throughout the week?

Speaker 0

You have to be dialed.

Speaker 0

I'm assuming you're dialed based, but do you have system that helps you to be super dialed with your schedule needs

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

To mean, I feel like I have to be because like I've said before, I'm kind of an all or nothing.

Speaker 1

So it just takes the pressure off of all of the decisions.

Speaker 1

So even I'm thinking of something simple like meal planning.

Speaker 1

I do all of that on Sunday.

Speaker 1

I figure out exactly what we're having.

Speaker 1

I have my menu for the week.

Speaker 1

I prep as much as I can.

Speaker 1

And I work, so there's decision fatigue.

Speaker 1

There's just days when I don't even want to think about making another decision.

Speaker 1

So getting all of that out of the way earlier in the week helps me think about less about all of the things I have to do and just more around execution.

Speaker 1

Execution as it relates to work, to home stuff, to my running.

Speaker 1

It just, again, takes the guesswork out and I can just show up fully for all of those different things.

Speaker 1

And so like I said, I know I run early every day of the week or the days that I'm supposed to.

Speaker 1

I feel add in my strength and my mobility, all of that out of the way.

Speaker 1

And then I have all of the other things already outlined and planned for me.

Speaker 1

I'm a big person who calendarizes everything.

Speaker 1

So in my calendar, I have one kind of master calendar that has my workouts, my kids things, my home personal stuff, and then of course, all of my work responsibilities too.

Speaker 1

So it's just easier that I know exactly how I have to structure my days and my weeks.

Speaker 1

And it allows me to figure out, okay, where do I need to shift and pivot?

Speaker 1

Because that something has to give from time to time.

Speaker 1

And so it just, again, it allows one big picture of all of the different responsibilities that I have.

Speaker 0

So good.

Speaker 0

I love that aspect of being able to have everything in the calendar, seeing the priorities, and then also reducing the decisions that need to be made.

Speaker 0

I think that kills people more when it comes to doing a lot of stuff.

Speaker 0

It's what should I be doing right now?

Speaker 0

Should I be doing this?

Speaker 0

Do I need to be thinking about this?

Speaker 0

You said meal planning is one.

Speaker 0

Even in one decision, I think it doesn't even have to be a coach, but some sort of training plan where you don't necessarily have to think about what workouts do do this week?

Speaker 0

Even for me, coach, that's been, I think, the hardest thing of being self coach is, damn, I got to write all my own crap here and think about all this.

Speaker 0

And so it's offloading those decisions and the thinking so that you can just spend more of the time doing and being able to execute on all those things, which is just so awesome to see you do that, not only from a standpoint of getting the training in, but life in general, which is so, so good.

Speaker 0

是的。

So yeah.

Speaker 0

And then in that training block leading into Moab, for you, what were some big wins that you saw along the way?

Speaker 0

Some things that you felt like you were really making progress on?

Speaker 0

What were some good insights from that training block that you feel like were real big wins for you?

Speaker 0

And for someone who's maybe they're training for a 200 or training for Moab that they can take away from as well?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Like we were saying earlier, just that durability was huge for me.

Speaker 1

I've never put in such a big block of work through Bigfoot or even building up now into Tahoe.

Speaker 1

So that was huge.

Speaker 1

And it gave me, going back to even the confidence, just being able to have that confidence, showing up at that starting line, being able to take all of those learnings was super helpful.

Speaker 1

And something that I've struggled with, and I'm sure other people have too, is just thinking through that nutrition side of training.

Speaker 1

So that was a big, not so much a learning curve, something that I focused on this time around and I'm still trying to focus on is how do I improve my hydration and nutrition in some of these longer races because it's just been a challenge.

Speaker 1

And so I was pretty focused on that with throughout the Moab block and really was in tune with that and all of my training runs and yeah, being able to execute that within that race.

Speaker 0

So good.

Speaker 0

Yeah, I think that's awesome that you think about all those optimizations of not even just the durability standpoint of doing more, doing the other tweaks, nutrition, hydration, efficiency, all these things too.

Speaker 0

And to work at those throughout the training block, because we work with each other for a solid time going into there.

Speaker 0

That's where you gave yourself the ample time to work on the durability, gave yourself ample time to work on the nutrition, the hydration, all that stuff too.

Speaker 0

Hey, everybody.

Speaker 0

Real quick.

Speaker 0

Before we dive in the episode, I have to give a huge shout out to a product that has helped me to really handle high volume and training, be able to attack my hard workout sessions with ease, and ultimately allow me to recover a lot quicker from session to session.

Speaker 0

So much so that I recently did the Black Canyon 100 ks and then the next day did the 50 ks.

Speaker 0

And in between I used this product to help me to recover better so that I started on the start line on the 50 ks the next day with no soreness at all, and I was able to perform with a faster pace than I did the day before at the 100 ks, which was awesome.

Speaker 0

And I owe a lot of that to PlayOn pain relief.

Speaker 0

Now PlayOn is an all natural topical pain relief spray where you spray it on your muscles and it relieves inflammation in a matter of seconds.

Speaker 0

It goes into the bones, the joints, the muscles where the inflammation is sourced, unlike a lot of other pain relief products where they just cool the skin directly, such as CBD creams, Biofreeze, IcyHot, all that stuff.

Speaker 0

So this is an actual product that helps you to really get to the root source of inflammation to help you perform strong.

Speaker 0

I use this in the middle of my long runs.

Speaker 0

I use this in my long training weeks, and I even use it in the middle of races to help me to get fresh muscles so I can climb those hills strong, keep my muscles durable and ultimately allow me to recover better after those races and long run so I can get back to it.

Speaker 0

So PlayOn is actually shipping every day right now.

Speaker 0

They're currently in stock.

Speaker 0

They do go out of stock, so you want to be sure to reserve your bottle.

Speaker 0

And if you want to get 20% off your order, you can use the code EVERYDAYULTRA at planrelief.com to get 20% off your order of PlayOn.

Speaker 0

That's EVERYDAYULTRA at planrelief.com and to get 20% off your order.

Speaker 0

And I hope you give them a try so you can keep playing on and ultimately relieve sore muscles so you can get back out there and crush your ultramarathon goals.

Speaker 0

Also want to give a huge shout out to Janji, which is my favorite trail running apparel on the market.

Speaker 0

Especially when it comes to the hotter months that are coming up.

Speaker 0

You need trail running equipment that is going to help to keep you cool and also feel good without chafing you out there.

Speaker 0

And that's why I wear Janji for all my hot races, including Western States one hundred and Badwater one hundred thirty five coming up.

Speaker 0

My favorite items are the Run All Day Tee, which keeps me nice and cool and also does not chafe me and the two in one multi shorts, which again does not chafe and I love the compression liner because it's nice and comfortable even when I get soaked through the sweat and topical cooling out there.

Speaker 0

And it's got pockets for storage, are really, really useful.

Speaker 0

So if you want to shop those and all my other favorite items at Janji, go to janji.com/everydayultra to check out my favorites.

Speaker 0

Go grab them, go give them a try, and make sure that you're upgrading your apparel with Janji.

Speaker 0

Alright, everyone.

Speaker 0

Let's get back in the episode.

Speaker 0

And in, like, the the myths of it all too, like, I mean, you also, like, you know, did some, like, cool projects along the way that I mean, do would you like to talk about those?

Speaker 0

Like and maybe just talk about, like, the intent for those because I also I wanna talk about Moab too, but I think it's with such a long training block that we had together.

Speaker 0

I think it was cool that you added in these projects along the way too.

Speaker 0

So can you talk to us a little bit about that as well?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So I usually only run or race, I should say, one or two, probably closer to one, like one or two races a year.

Speaker 1

Like I don't do racing.

Speaker 1

And a lot of that is due to my schedule.

Speaker 1

Just I like to be around for my kids.

Speaker 1

Like I've, we've said traveled quite a bit.

Speaker 1

And so for me to plan races sometimes can be quite challenging just because things come up with work.

Speaker 1

So I did for Mother's Day, my own Mother's Day madness thing last May where my kids actually crewed me and I did an FKT in this trail here in New Hampshire, which was about a six twelve, it was 100 ks from Northern New Hampshire to Southern New Hampshire, which was super fun.

Speaker 1

It was a solo project.

Speaker 1

It was honestly just me and my kids occasionally being at certain checkpoints.

Speaker 1

So that was a blast.

Speaker 1

And it was also another great confidence booster of being able to show up for myself.

Speaker 1

I mean, there was nobody else on the course, an occasional bike rider or somebody.

Speaker 1

But for me being able to push for 100 ks just by myself was not only it was again, just kind of built that confidence itself going into that MOA block.

Speaker 1

And then I had the privilege of also crewing my friends who were doing the Whites one hundred.

Speaker 1

It was a an unofficial race last year and so I was able to go out and do about 30 miles with them I think which was a lot of fun being able to go into the Whites of New Hampshire and we did some that was crazy terrain as well.

Speaker 1

So I had that fun project itself and helping them.

Speaker 0

Oh, that's so awesome.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It's so cool to see you have these things in there too, because especially I think with very long training blocks and also when you're very busy, it can almost feel like you're just I don't want say going through the motions, but it just feels very the same.

Speaker 0

It's like you do this, this, this, this.

Speaker 0

And to have those projects in between, whether it's going through the whites or running across New Hampshire, all these things.

Speaker 0

And these are passion projects that you did just for little side quests.

Speaker 0

Those can help to rejuvenate you to not only get excited about the training again, but just get excited about Or rekindle the excitement for loving, for endurance, for the adventure.

Speaker 0

And so it was so cool that you laid those along the way to kind of keep the spice and the spark in terms of the training in there, which I think is very, very encouraging for people to do, like I said, especially for people who only race maybe once or twice a year and have a ginormously busy schedule.

Speaker 0

So yeah, it was Yeah, cool to see

Speaker 1

that's I think that's the big, my words of advice would be like find things that, yes, your training is really important if you have a big goal and you can still train and have fun and it doesn't have to look maybe exactly as prescribed.

Speaker 1

But there were times when, like I said, we did the PEMI loop and other great big adventures that maybe the training would have been different, but it was still effective, kind of this more adventurous type of training itself.

Speaker 1

So yeah, I would say to folks, also just try to keep it fun for yourself.

Speaker 0

Love that.

Speaker 0

And it's so, so important, especially in the optimization phase, kind of where you were in, because it can be so focused about I shouldn't say so focused, but the focus is, I want to increase performance.

Speaker 0

I want to do well.

Speaker 0

And sometimes it can be easy to let almost the fun scene away from it.

Speaker 0

So to be able to be in this position where you still have the fun and you're optimizing and you're thinking about performance and you're thinking about all these things and also keeping everything up is such a good way to stay in the game and also avoid burnout at the end of the day.

Speaker 0

Avoid the burnout.

Speaker 0

Because running, like you said, you enjoyed it.

Speaker 0

You've gotten to this love and everything.

Speaker 0

So it was so cool to see you adding these fun things to keep the enjoyment of the process in there to just keep the spark alive, which is awesome.

Speaker 0

Let's talk about Moab.

Speaker 0

So for the folks who aren't, again, familiar with the lore of last year's Moab, Moab is generally a race that's pretty hot, pretty much no precipitation, and pretty standard desert weather.

Speaker 0

But you guys had a little bit of a different year.

Speaker 0

Talk us through what ensued you guys this year.

Speaker 1

I think I'm still recovering emotionally from Moab.

Speaker 1

I'm not going to lie.

Speaker 1

Someone was like, Would you do that when again?

Speaker 1

I'm like, I don't know.

Speaker 1

I was pretty scarred after Moab last year.

Speaker 1

Know it's a beautiful course.

Speaker 1

It's incredible.

Speaker 1

And it poured, it poured.

Speaker 1

It's in a desert and they had a hurricane go through.

Speaker 1

I mean, that was just to paint the picture of how wild it was.

Speaker 1

And so, going into it, we were watching the weather, it was pretty hit or miss and it hit us and it just rained pretty much the entire four or five days that we were out there.

Speaker 1

And there were washouts, so much mud, so much rain, everything I had planned going in, the heat training and being able to work through that did not need because it was like four thirties, forties, fifties, like it never really got hot.

Speaker 1

I think one day when the sun was out, it got to maybe 70, but yeah, it was very difficult.

Speaker 1

I will say, we also had a very rainy season in New Hampshire last year.

Speaker 1

I think I was even saying to you, every long run was the rain.

Speaker 1

So thinking back to building up those moments of confidence, going out in the rain definitely helped me be successful, I think, at Moab because I could deal with the foot issues and I could deal with being in rain for hours on end because that's what I had done in training.

Speaker 1

Of course, Moab was literally days and days of rain, but it helps, I think, in some ways going into that knowing that, okay, I've experienced this on a smaller scale and I will make it through the other side.

Speaker 1

But it was hard.

Speaker 1

Was one moment, what's Geyser Pass?

Speaker 1

That was the fear I had looming over me the entire time because it was going up to the highest elevation and I'm like a flatlander at 400 feet.

Speaker 1

And it was sideways rain.

Speaker 1

I felt like I was in hunger games.

Speaker 1

I was with my friend Nick and we were going through this and we were so afraid well, I was so afraid of just like the navigation and working our way through the mountain and it was just wild.

Speaker 1

But we made it, and we finished the race.

Speaker 1

And that one, yeah, that was definitely much harder than for me than Bigfoot.

Speaker 0

I mean, that section to Geyser Pass in standard weather is crazy.

Speaker 0

And to do that with mud and sideways rain is in my mind just like, oh my because there's already tons of down trees and everything.

Speaker 1

The markings were actually gone too because of a lot of the wind and the rain

Speaker 0

还有。

and

Speaker 1

stuff.

Speaker 1

So you're completely relying on your navigation and it was a lot of people were lost.

Speaker 1

It was just wild.

Speaker 1

Like I said, we felt like we were in hunger games or something.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Mean, and it feels like you're just in the depths of the wilderness out And it's crazy because you're on this ginormous dirt road for seemingly miles in the desert.

Speaker 0

And then all of a sudden, you're just in the craziness of the woods going up at high altitude.

Speaker 0

I can't even imagine that sunshine And conditions that you

Speaker 1

I kept on thinking that morning's going to come.

Speaker 1

Everything is always better in the morning.

Speaker 1

The nighttime for any long distance like this is always tough because it's dark, colder, And in this case, was pouring and we were all convinced the morning's coming, it's going to get better.

Speaker 1

It didn't.

Speaker 1

It continued to rain.

Speaker 1

It was just as windy and rainy.

Speaker 1

And it it was was now looking back at somewhat comical, but at the time we're like, What just happened?

Speaker 1

This was just wild.

Speaker 0

Crazy.

Speaker 0

I think everybody that I know personally who had done Moab that year, no matter who they were, I mean, obviously Killian's a coach on our team and he won.

Speaker 0

And even with him having such a great performance, he like, He told me, he was like, that was borderline type three fun of just crazy.

Speaker 0

And so everyone was saying that year was just nuts.

Speaker 0

You mentioned you had several low points in this race.

Speaker 0

Can you talk to us about one of those low points in the perspective of how did you get through that?

Speaker 0

And the reason why I want to focus on this is because it's not about the low points that we face, it's how we deal with them and manage them.

Speaker 0

Can you talk to us maybe about either one low point or a couple of low points in the race that you work through?

Speaker 0

And what in your mind did you do to help you to get through that to keep moving forward?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

There was one And I can't remember where we were going, which aid station it was to, but one particular point it was, I was just physically, I felt terrible.

Speaker 1

I wasn't able to eat or drink anything.

Speaker 1

Part of it was probably because of the altitude and I was just not feeling great.

Speaker 1

And I never thought about dropping, but I was just really mentally in the slow spot.

Speaker 1

And for me, to pull myself, slowly pull myself out of it, I was thinking about the people that believed in me.

Speaker 1

I knew friends at home were tracking me and family was tracking me.

Speaker 1

I had my daughter there.

Speaker 1

I pulled her all She came out there with me.

Speaker 1

My friends were there pacing me.

Speaker 1

And all of these outside people that were either watching or there with me believed in me enough to show up and either track me or be here at the race.

Speaker 1

And I guess it just made me refocus on what my goals were and break down even further what I needed to do.

Speaker 1

So instead of trying to focus on even getting to that next aid station, breaking it down into the next few minutes.

Speaker 1

Okay, Sarah, take a couple of sips of water over the next few minutes because you're not able to drink because you're nauseous.

Speaker 1

Don't even think about that aid station.

Speaker 1

Just take a couple sips, take a couple nibbles of food, and really just trying to break it down helped slowly pull me out of feeling so terrible.

Speaker 1

And eventually I got at least feeling a little bit better to get myself to that next aid station.

Speaker 1

So yeah, I think many times throughout that race, had to have that conversation with myself to stop and recognize that people were here, they were cheering for me, they were rooting for me to finish.

Speaker 1

And I, in many ways, I the one, I'm the only one that can really change this narrative for me.

Speaker 1

I can continue to go down that downward spiral or I can make some small changes in what I'm doing in that mind shift to help make the situation a little bit better.

Speaker 1

And so that's what I slowly chipped away at and eventually got my way to that finish line.

Speaker 0

Oh, it's so awesome.

Speaker 0

I love that you mentioned two different things.

Speaker 0

The first thing is knowing that the decision is in your hands to take the action of where you wanna go.

Speaker 0

And I think that's so cool because it gives us agency.

Speaker 0

It gives us that power to be like, oh, okay, I can make this better, which is so cool to see you going out and implement that.

Speaker 0

And the second thing is like, not only looking at eight station to eight station, but like moment to moment, right?

Speaker 0

Because moment to moment is way easier to think about just accomplishing as opposed to like, especially in a race like Moab, where the eight stations are very long, right?

Speaker 0

嗯

Like

Speaker 1

you say 20 miles.

Speaker 0

Yeah, right.

Speaker 0

Like uphill, like, Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 0

So I love that breaking down of it into very small chunks and having those conversations with yourself to say like, Hey, all I need to do is those moments and everything is such too.

Speaker 0

For maybe people who are doing races in crazy conditions, or maybe they're in a position where they go in a race and all of a sudden they get torrential downpour or whatever, how did you manage the conditions out there?

Speaker 1

Think it was I mean, there's the mental side of it.

Speaker 1

The mental side of it is that I just had to accept it.

Speaker 1

There's nothing I can do.

Speaker 1

There's things that I can do to proactively make it a little bit better.

Speaker 1

So have a really good raincoat, change my socks, make sure I'm taking care of my feet, have warm clothes.

Speaker 1

So there's those types of things.

Speaker 1

But then, yeah, just recognizing I can't control any of that and just execute as best as you can.

Speaker 1

And that was all I could do.

Speaker 1

It goes back to that, what can I control?

Speaker 1

I can control how I show up, my mental framing around it, my attitude.

Speaker 1

I will say one of the things that I've recognized about myself, especially in these bigger races, is I love being able to bring people together.

Speaker 1

Especially that first night, we had, I don't know, 10 people in our little party that we had going to the aid stations because it's just easier when you have this community around you.

Speaker 1

And so finding that throughout Moab when it was such terrible rain, we were kind of all in this situation together.

Speaker 1

It allowed us to, I don't know, at least have some fun and enjoy the rain that we were experiencing and going through that.

Speaker 1

So that was certainly beneficial to, I think, making our way through and not dwelling on the fact that it was pouring rain and there was just nothing we could do about it.

Speaker 0

Yeah, I love that you think about it in that way because it is true.

Speaker 0

It's like you can't control it.

Speaker 0

Kind of similar to Bigfoot, couldn't control the fires, couldn't control any of that stuff, but this is the situation.

Speaker 0

This is how you do it.

Speaker 0

And to be able to be in a position where you have other people there where you're essentially empathizing together of like, Hey, we're all going through this.

Speaker 0

This is all nuts.

Speaker 0

And there's something about doing the experience with other people who are going through the same exact thing that almost can make it, I don't wanna say more fun, but from a standpoint of like, hey, we're all in this together.

Speaker 0

We're doing this.

Speaker 0

Let's make it an epic adventure and let's carry it out.

Speaker 0

And you mentioned all the low moments.

Speaker 0

It was tough.

Speaker 0

It was hard and everything.

Speaker 0

What was so important about that finish for given such a difficult race out there and everything?

Speaker 0

Talk to us about the importance of that finish of that race.

Speaker 1

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 1

Well, I think it was interesting that Not interesting, but my daughter was with me for that particular race.

Speaker 1

So just having her at the finish line and seeing all of the different phases I was going through was really important to me.

Speaker 1

And that was motivating in itself, just to have her there, showing her that we're tough, we don't quit, even when you want to, because of course, saw me in many low moments throughout that race.

Speaker 1

And so that was really important to me.

Speaker 1

But even just for my myself, and I think this is what we all need to find when we're doing these big adventures, whether it's something personal or out on the trails, it's finding whatever is important to you and giving yourself that opportunity to show up for yourself, to do hard things, find out what you're capable of, figuring out all of the pivots that you have to make.

Speaker 1

You just learn so much about yourself in these races, and you can apply it to your real life, your real life, when you're not on the trails.

Speaker 1

And there's so much of that that I just enjoy and I appreciate.

Speaker 1

And I share this with my colleagues all the time.

Speaker 1

There's so much overlap between what I learned out on the trails to how I approach my work.

Speaker 1

And just getting to that finish line, life is never easy.

Speaker 1

And there's always obstacles that are thrown our way.

Speaker 1

And how we show up and how we work ourselves through this, what we learn along the way to continue to apply towards like our future selves is just what I appreciate crossing every single finish line is that you are I feel like you're a changed person when you cross the finish line, but you're not that same person.

Speaker 1

And crossing the line at Moab really showed me perseverance for me.

Speaker 1

That was by far the most challenging thing that I've gone through from like a running perspective, and just the weather, the altitude, there's so many, there's a very long checklist.

Speaker 1

And I never, even the times when I had doubt, I never gave up on myself.

Speaker 1

And that to me was just my key learning.

Speaker 0

You mentioned coming out of prison, for you was the change for you just realizing how much stronger and tougher you were.

Speaker 0

Was that the change Yeah.

Speaker 0

对于

For

Speaker 1

was hard.

Speaker 1

There was times when I was actually scared.

Speaker 1

It was probably because I was so sleep deprived and all of these different elements.

Speaker 1

But there was times when I'm like, I'm just I really wonder, is it possible from Can I actually do this?

Speaker 1

It was just so hard going through that terrain and yeah, being able to move through it.

Speaker 1

And like I said, get to that finish line and still finish with a smile.

Speaker 1

So just like Big Foot, finished with that smile, which was great.

Speaker 1

Yeah, it allowed me just to have some new confidence and ready for hopefully Tahoe.

Speaker 0

So good, so good.

Speaker 0

And I can vouch for the smile because I remember FaceTiming you right after you finished and you had the biggest smile on your face just going through it.

Speaker 0

And you were so excited and ecstatic.

Speaker 0

And that was so just cool to see.

Speaker 0

And even though going through so much and a bunch of crazy weather and like you said, the conditions, the altitude, the tough course, and still cross that finish line with a smile and this newfound strength, I think is just the biggest win that any of us can get out there.

Speaker 0

So it was awesome that you had that experience out there, and I'm so freaking stoked for you.

Speaker 0

And you get to go on journey number three this weekend in the 200 miles pace, like the full loop around Tahoe.

Speaker 0

How are you and I know actually, this is new for me because you move coaches to Coach Liz because now as I'm transitioning out of one on one athletes.

Speaker 0

And so I don't even know the answer to this one.

Speaker 0

So I'm excited.

Speaker 0

How are you approaching Tahoe differently?

Speaker 0

Now this being your third 200 mile race that you're going into.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I feel like I can apply all that I've learned from Bigfoot and Moab and apply that into Tahoe.

Speaker 1

I wasn't able to execute as well at Moab because of the conditions that we've talked about.

Speaker 1

So I'm really excited to apply that here.

Speaker 1

The weather looks great, knock on wood, maybe warm, but that's okay.

Speaker 1

No rain in the forecast.

Speaker 1

That's good.

Speaker 1

I'll take it.

Speaker 1

And so that's what I'm looking to do is fully embrace still the community aspect of it that I really enjoy.

Speaker 1

To me, it's the full loop.

Speaker 1

So it will definitely be such an adventure.

Speaker 1

I'm so excited for that.

Speaker 1

But then really work on moving with purpose and being efficient and just kind of taking all of those learnings.

Speaker 1

I learned a lot about the nutrition aspect too at altitude at Moab.

Speaker 1

So staying on top of that when I go out to Tahoe.

Speaker 1

Yeah, there's so many learnings that I just continue to apply and I'm gonna execute that on race weeks and excited to see what happens.

Speaker 0

So good.

Speaker 0

I love that.

Speaker 0

And it's one of those things where I know Kelly and I, we talk about this a lot and we always say like, it's really impossible for someone to have their best 200 mile race as the first one.

Speaker 0

And the reason for that is just because of the experience that you learn along the way.

Speaker 0

And it's almost like you get better and better and better simply because of the experience and the lessons and the things that you've learned.

Speaker 0

And so to go into Tahoe and implement the first two things or the first two races that you did in the 200 mile space into this weekend, I think is just such a powerful place to be in because you have so much data and information and lessons that you learn in those first two races that you can take into this one.

Speaker 0

Yeah, we're super stoked for you guys, especially to do the full loop.

Speaker 0

I mean, that is crazy.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

就像

Like

Speaker 1

Tahoe is a combination I think of Bigfoot and Moab, right?

Speaker 1

Because it's something more Alpine, but you get the elevation, it's more similar to what Moab is.

Speaker 1

So yeah, to me, it's kind of like the perfect blend.

Speaker 1

So I'm really stoked for that one.

Speaker 1

It's gonna be great.

Speaker 0

That's true.

Speaker 0

You get like the real climby stuff, but like it's also super runnable like Moab.

Speaker 0

You get high altitude like you get in Moab, but also like not as like crazy steep as Bigfoot.

Speaker 0

And you do have some pretty steep climbs.

Speaker 0

Like PowerLine's always a good highlight out there, too.

Speaker 0

So it is like a cool little mashup of the best of both worlds.

Speaker 0

And I mean, you get to round out the career triple crown, which is super cool to see with this.

Speaker 0

So yeah, we're all super excited for you as you make your big 200 mile venture around the Loop Of Lake Tahoe.

Speaker 0

And this has just been so awesome having you on and getting to hear about all the lessons and the takeaways from your journey into the 200 mile distance in the ultraspace.

Speaker 0

Super, super stoked.

Speaker 0

If anyone wants to follow along on Sarah's journey, I'll post the links to her socials in the show notes and everything too.

Speaker 0

But Sarah has been amazing.

Speaker 0

So before we even started, you told me that you have the answer to this question and some fun facts.

Speaker 0

And folks, I don't even know what the fun facts are.

Speaker 0

I don't know what the answer is.

Speaker 0

So I'm equally as excited as all of you.

Speaker 0

So I'm excited to ask this question.

Speaker 0

The question that we ask every single guest on the EVERYDAYULTRA podcast, because the show is called EVERYDAYULTRA, and we help our listeners endure better and be better endurance athletes every day.

Speaker 0

What can our listeners do every single day to be better endurance athletes?

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

Well, I knew you were gonna ask that question.

Speaker 1

So I went down the rabbit hole and I was curious because I listen to probably every single episode.

Speaker 1

And so what is the common answer?

Speaker 1

So your fun facts, I have them here.

Speaker 1

I compiled through AI what their responses were.

Speaker 1

So 40% of your guests have said consistency.

Speaker 1

If you're ever wondering what is the common thread?

Speaker 1

So 40% of your guests say consistency is the number one thing that people can do.

Speaker 1

About another 20% say mindset is the other one.

Speaker 1

Train smart, 15%, the fundamentals, so just being able to execute, etcetera, and then sustainability or durability, that's 10%.

Speaker 1

The breakdown of what your guests say by far is consistency.

Speaker 1

And that probably would have said something along those lines, but then I'm like, I can't be like everybody else and say consistency.

Speaker 1

I can't be in that 40%.

Speaker 1

So my suggestion for anyone trying to get into the sport or embrace this sport is just listening more to your body and adapting to what you need.

Speaker 1

And we talked about this, there are days when maybe you just need more sleep or maybe you need to do an easy run as opposed to a speed workout.

Speaker 1

And so giving yourself that flexibility, giving yourself that permission, I think not only makes you a better athlete, but just a stronger performer because you're putting yourself first.

Speaker 1

And so that would be my response to that.

Speaker 0

So good.

Speaker 0

Is there any percentage on people who said, Listen to your body?

Speaker 1

没有。

No.

Speaker 1

None.

Speaker 1

So now I'm gonna have to add that back, and, like, I'll try to figure that out.

Speaker 0

It's gonna be, like, point zero something percent.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

But We need to

Speaker 1

get that one added up now.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Well, first of all, thank you for compiling that.

Speaker 0

That is so interesting because I was like, yeah, consistency is the the most said answer, but I didn't know by how much.

Speaker 0

So 40%, like, wow, that's amazing.

Speaker 0

So thank you for those fun facts.

Speaker 0

And also thank you for that really good answer because I believe it gets, I don't want say lost in translation, but not as talked about too much in ultrarunning.

Speaker 0

Because ultrarunning is gritty.

Speaker 0

It's tough.

Speaker 0

We do need to push through pain and toughness.

Speaker 0

It's a requirement in the sport.

Speaker 0

But the dark side of that is that we just dig ourselves into a hole.

Speaker 0

We push too hard when our body says, Hey, today needs to be a rest day.

Speaker 0

And I think that answer is so important.

Speaker 0

And I think it's where the sport should be shifting, like from a standpoint of being able to optimize training and the love for running and everything.

Speaker 0

So the fact that you mentioned that answer is totally amazing.

Speaker 0

And I'm hoping over the years that the percentage of people who say that answer is higher, but sounds like you're the pioneer for that one for now.

Speaker 0

And that's bring those people along.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

Exactly.

Speaker 0

And then maybe next year, then it gets a 10% or a 15% bump from there.

Speaker 0

Sarah, this is awesome.

Speaker 0

You are amazing.

Speaker 0

I appreciate you so much for being on the show, for all you do, for being an amazing member of our community and team.

And I'm so stoked to see you go out and crush it at Tahoe.

Speaker 0

I'll be following along your dot all around the lake, and I cannot wait to see you crush this thing.

Speaker 0

Just super proud of everything you've done, and you're such an inspiration, my friend.

Speaker 0

Thank you so much for everything.

Speaker 1

Thank you for having me and for coaching me.

Speaker 1

It's been so great over the past couple of years working with you and just listening to your show.

Speaker 1

And, yeah, good luck to anyone listening and whatever their races are for the season.

Speaker 1

I'm super excited for them too.

Speaker 0

And for you.

Speaker 0

Oh, thank you.

Speaker 1

Thank you.

Speaker 1

Can't wait to follow you as well.

Speaker 0

Thank you so much.

Speaker 0

Well, you got your race first.

Speaker 0

We're all the excitement's going to you first and then then me after.

Speaker 0

So but we're pumped to see you crush it this weekend, and thanks again for everything, Sarah.

Speaker 0

I appreciate you.

Speaker 1

好的。

K.

Speaker 1

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 1

I'll see you later.

Speaker 1

Thanks,

Speaker 0

乔。

Joe.

Speaker 0

再见。

See you.
