Speaker 0

那年我十五岁,夏天特别神奇,因为就在那年,我终于明白了自己这辈子想做什么。

It was the summer I turned 15, a magical season for me because that year I discovered exactly what I wanted to do with my life.

Speaker 0

这不是小孩子对遥远未来的胡思乱想,什么当消防员、侦探、水手、试飞员或者特工之类的幻想。

It was more than a young boy's mere pipe dream of a distant hazy future, confused fantasies of being a fireman, detective, sailor, test pilot, or spy.

Speaker 0

我就是知道。

I knew.

Speaker 0

我知道自己一定会成为健美运动员。

I knew I was going to be a bodybuilder.

Speaker 0

还不只是这样。

It wasn't simply that either.

Speaker 0

我要成为世界上最强的健美选手,最伟大的那一个。

I would be the best bodybuilder in the world, the greatest.

Speaker 0

我也不太说得清为啥选健美,就是打心底里喜欢。

I'm I'm not exactly sure why I chose bodybuilding except that I loved it.

Speaker 0

从第一次握住杠铃的那一刻起,我就爱上了它——那种举起沉重铁片、挑战极限的刺激感,简直让人上瘾。

I loved it from the first moment my fingers closed around a barbell, and I felt the challenge and exhilaration of hoisting the heavy steel plates above my head.

Speaker 0

我从小就跟运动打交道,全靠我爸带动。

I had always been involved in sports through my father.

Speaker 0

在爸爸的鼓励下,我十岁那年第一次参加了正规的竞技运动。

With my father's encouragement, I first got into organized competitive sports when I was 10.

Speaker 0

但到了十三岁,团体运动就再也提不起我的兴趣了。

However, by the time I was 13, team sports no longer satisfied me.

Speaker 0

我已经独自走上了一条路。

I was already off on an individual trip.

Speaker 0

每当我们赢了比赛,可没人夸我,我就特别不爽。

I disliked it when we won a game and I didn't get personal recognition.

Speaker 0

只有当我被单独点出来,说我是最棒的那一个时,我才觉得真有成就感,所以我就想试试个人项目。

The only time I really felt rewarded was when I was singled out as being the best, so I decided to try individual sports.

Speaker 0

我到现在还清楚记得第一次走进健美健身房的情景。

I still remember my first visit to the bodybuilding gym.

Speaker 0

就在那一刻,我的人生目标突然清晰了——我一直在找的答案,就在这里。

There it was before me, my life, the answer I had been seeking.

Speaker 0

那一刻我全明白了。

It clicked.

Speaker 0

一旦开始,没多久我就上瘾了。

Once I started, it didn't take long.

Speaker 0

我简直着了魔。

I was literally addicted.

Speaker 0

我特别喜欢那种冷冰冰的铁器慢慢被体温焐热的感觉,还有健身房里的声音和气味。

I love the feel of the cold iron and steel warming to my touch and the sounds and the smells of the gym.

Speaker 0

到现在我还是爱得不行。

I still love it.

Speaker 0

我第一次真正练健美的场景,记得清清楚楚,就跟昨天发生的一样。

I remember the first real workout I had as vividly as if it were last night.

Speaker 0

我骑自行车去健身房,那儿离我住的村子有八英里远。

I rode my bike to the gym, which was eight miles from the village where I lived.

Speaker 0

我用杠铃、哑铃,还有各种器械。

I used barbells, dumbbells, and machines.

Speaker 0

guys说我会肌肉酸痛,可我当时一点感觉都没有。

The guys warned me that I'd get sore, but it didn't seem to be having any effect.

Speaker 0

我还以为自己已经练到不会酸了呢。

I thought I must be beyond that.

Speaker 0

结果练完回家骑车,直接从车上摔下来了。

Then after the workout, I started riding home and I fell off my bike.

Speaker 0

手软得根本抓不住车把。

I was so weak I couldn't make my hands hold on.

Speaker 0

两条腿完全没知觉。

I had no feeling in my legs.

Speaker 0

腿跟面条似的,一点劲都没有。

They were noodles.

Speaker 0

全身麻麻的,像通了电一样。

I was numb, my whole body buzzing.

Speaker 0

那是我第一次练力量训练,可我彻底上瘾了。

This was my first experience with weight training, and I was crazy for it.

Speaker 0

第二天早上,我连抬手梳头都做不到。

The next morning, I couldn't even lift my arm to comb my hair.

Speaker 0

每次一动,肩膀和手臂的肌肉就一阵剧痛。

Each time I tried, pain shot through every muscle in my shoulder and arm.

Speaker 0

怎么了,阿诺德?

What's wrong, Arnold?

Speaker 0

妈妈问我。

My mother asked.

Speaker 0

我跟她说,就是肌肉酸,僵得厉害。

I'm just sore, I told her, my muscles are stiff.

Speaker 0

可妈妈还是不依不饶。

But my mother kept on.

Speaker 0

为什么啊,阿诺德?

Why, Arnold?

Speaker 0

你干嘛非得这么折磨自己?

Why would you wanna do this to yourself?

Speaker 0

我根本不在乎我妈怎么想。

I couldn't be bothered with what my mother felt.

Speaker 0

看到身体的变化,感受到这些变化,反而让我兴奋。

Seeing new changes in my body, feeling them turned me on.

Speaker 0

我能感觉到肌肉在酸痛。

I felt my muscles aching.

Speaker 0

我慢慢明白,这种痛其实是进步的标志。

I learned that this pain meant progress.

Speaker 0

每次练完肌肉酸得不行,我就知道它们在长。

Each time my muscles were sore from a workout, I knew they were growing.

Speaker 0

我选的这运动,简直冷门到家了。

I could not have chosen a less popular sport.

Speaker 0

学校里朋友都觉得我疯了,但我压根不在意。

My school friends thought I was crazy, but I didn't care.

Speaker 0

我脑子里就一件事:继续练,把肌肉练出来。

My only thoughts were of going ahead and building muscles.

Speaker 0

我记得有些人总想往我脑子里灌输消极想法,劝我别那么拼,但我已经找到了愿意倾注全部热情的事,根本停不下来。

I remember certain people trying to put negative thoughts into my mind, trying to persuade me to slow down, but I had found the thing to which I wanted to devote my total energies, and there was no stopping me.

Speaker 0

我的这种劲头,真挺少见的。

My drive was unusual.

Speaker 0

我说话的方式跟朋友都不一样。

I talked differently than my friends.

Speaker 0

我对成功的渴望,比谁都强烈。

I was hungrier for success than anyone I knew.

Speaker 0

我开始为去健身房而活,不在健身房的时候,就翻遍所有健美杂志,就是在这些杂志里,我找到了我的偶像。

I started to live for being in the gym, and when he wasn't working on the gym, he'd be reading all these bodybuilding magazines, and this is where he finds his hero.

Speaker 0

有一期杂志里,我第一次看到了雷格·帕克的照片。

In one of those magazines, I saw my first photograph of Reg Park.

Speaker 0

我做梦都想长成个巨无霸。

I dreamed about being gigantic.

Speaker 0

雷格·帕克,就是我梦想的化身。

Reg Park was the epitome of that dream.

Speaker 0

Reg Park演赫拉克勒斯的样子太帅了,我看得完全呆住了。

Reg Park looked so magnificent in the role of Hercules that I was transfixed.

Speaker 0

我坐在电影院里,心里就一个念头:将来那个人就是我。

And I was sitting there in the theater, and I knew that that was going to be me.

Speaker 0

我也要长得像Reg Park那样。

I would look like Reg Park.

Speaker 0

他做的每一件事,我都要去学。

I would study everything that he did.

Speaker 0

从那以后,我的生活全都被Reg Park占据了。

From that point on, my life was utterly dominated by Reg Park.

Speaker 0

他的形象就是我的终极目标。

His image was my ideal.

Speaker 0

这个形象深深印在我脑子里,怎么都抹不掉。

It was fixed in my mind.

Speaker 0

我拼命打听关于Reg Park的一切消息。

I found out everything I could about Reg Park.

Speaker 0

我买下了所有刊登他训练计划的杂志。

I bought all the magazines that publish his programs.

Speaker 0

我搞清楚了他是怎么开始练的、吃些什么、怎么生活、怎么训练的。

I learned how he started training, what he ate, how he lived, and how he did his workouts.

Speaker 0

我对雷格·帕克着了魔。

I became obsessed with Reg Park.

Speaker 0

从我开始训练那天起,他的形象就一直在我眼前晃着。

He was the image in front of me from the time I started training.

Speaker 0

我越盯着这个形象努力练、越成长,就越觉得,成为他那样的人,不是梦,是真能办到的。

The more I focused in on this image and worked and grew, the more I saw it was real and possible for me to be like him.

Speaker 0

身边人都说五年内能成,可我觉得,我等不了五年。

People around me predicted that it could happen within five years, but I didn't think I could wait five years.

Speaker 0

我就是憋着一股劲,想早点儿达到那个目标。

I had this insatiable drive to get there sooner.

Speaker 0

别人一周练两三次就心满意足了,我却很快把训练频率加到了每周六次。

Whereas most people were satisfied to train two or three times a week, I quickly escalated my program to six workouts a week.

Speaker 0

我爸爸完全懵了。

My father was baffled.

Speaker 0

别这样,阿诺德。

Don't do this, Arnold.

Speaker 0

我跟他说,我想成为世界上肌肉最棒的人。

I responded, I wanna be the best built man in the world.

Speaker 0

这话让爸爸叹了口气,直摇头。

That made my father sigh and shake his head.

Speaker 0

接着我又说,我想去美国拍电影。

Then I said, I wanna go to America and be in movies.

Speaker 0

我想当演员。

I want to be an actor.

Speaker 0

美国?他反问。

America, he replied.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

美国。

America.

Speaker 0

天哪,他喊道。

My god, he cried.

Speaker 0

他走进厨房,对我妈说:‘我们最好带这孩子去看看医生。’

He went into the kitchen and told my mother, I think we better go to the doctor with this one.

Speaker 0

他脑子有问题。

He's sick in a head.

Speaker 0

他真的特别担心我。

He was genuinely worried about me.

Speaker 0

他觉得我不正常。

He felt I wasn't normal.

Speaker 0

当然,他说得对。

And of course, he was right.

Speaker 0

凭着我的野心和拼劲,我确实一点都不正常。

With my desire and my drive, I definitely wasn't normal.

Speaker 0

普通人能安于平平淡淡的生活。

Normal people can be happy with a regular life.

Speaker 0

我可不一样。

I was different.

Speaker 0

我觉得人生不该只是机械地过完一天又一天。

I felt there was more to life than just plotting through an average existence.

Speaker 0

我从小就特别被那些伟大人物的故事吸引。

I'd always been impressed by stories of greatness and power.

Speaker 0

凯撒、查理曼、拿破仑这些名字,我从小就记得清清楚楚。

Caesar, Charlemagne, Napoleon were names I knew and remembered.

Speaker 0

我想做点特别的事,还想被人公认是顶尖的。

I wanted to do something special, and I wanted to be recognized as the best.

Speaker 0

刚才这段摘自我想跟你们聊的那本书——《阿诺德:健美运动员的养成》。

That was an excerpt from the book that I wanna talk to you about today, which is Arnold, The Education of a Bodybuilder.

Speaker 0

阿诺德写这本书的时候是1977年,才三十岁。

And Arnold wrote this all the way back in 1977 when he was just 30 years old.

Speaker 0

我之所以想到这个,是因为最近我读了很多关于SpaceX的事,才意识到埃隆创立这家公司时,也才30岁。

And the reason this came to mind is because I've been reading a lot about SpaceX, and I was thinking of the fact that Elon founded that company when he was just 30 years old.

Speaker 0

挺有意思的,回头去看看埃隆那时候说的话——那时候SpaceX未来能不能成功,还远着呢,至少得十来年以后。

And I think it's interesting to go back and read what Elon was saying at that age when the future success of SpaceX is still a decade or two in the future.

Speaker 0

还有个类似的例子,是LVMH的创始人贝尔纳·阿尔诺。

There's another example of this from Bernard Arnault, the founder of LVMH.

Speaker 0

我读过一本关于他的传记,特别难找,早就绝版了。

I read this by this really hard to find biography of his, which is out of print.

Speaker 0

你要是真碰上了,价格动不动就三千美金起。

It's like when you do find copies, they sell for, you know, sometimes $3,000.

Speaker 0

书的结尾时,阿尔诺已经四十多岁了,他当时就列出了未来三十年要走的路。

And when the book ends, Arnold is in his forties, and he lays out the plan that he winds up pursuing over the next three decades.

Speaker 0

这跟我手里这本书记载的完全一模一样。

It's exactly what happens in the book that I'm holding in my hand.

Speaker 0

阿诺德在书里讲了,他是怎么一步步在当年那个冷门、还被人笑话的运动里,爬到顶峰的,然后他说:嘿。

Arnold lays out what he learned to get to the top of this very unusual and frankly widely ridiculed sport of bodybuilding back then and says, hey.

Speaker 0

等等。

Wait.

Speaker 0

我用在健美上成功的那套方法,同样能让我当上电影明星、建立起商业帝国——后来他真就这么干了。

The same principles I used to get to the top of this sport, I'm gonna use to become a movie star and build a business empire and then goes and does it.

Speaker 0

所以我们现在看到的,是他还没成功之前是怎么想的。

So what we'll see here is how he was thinking before he achieved this success.

Speaker 0

咱们再回过头来看看,阿尔诺是怎么找到他的行动蓝图的。

And so let's go back to this idea that Arnold found his blueprint.

Speaker 0

我的梦想可不止是练出一副惊艳的身材。

My dreams went beyond a spectacular body.

Speaker 0

一旦我有了那样的身材,我就知道它能给我带来什么。

Once I had that, I knew what it would do for me.

Speaker 0

我会进军电影圈,还在全世界开满健身房。

I'd get into the movies and build gymnasiums all over the world.

Speaker 0

我要打造一个帝国。

I'd create an empire.

Speaker 0

雷格·帕克成了我心中的父亲形象。

Reg Park became my father image.

Speaker 0

我把他的照片贴满了整个卧室的墙。

I pasted his pictures on all the walls of my bedroom.

Speaker 0

所有用德文出版的关于他的文章,我都读了个遍。

I read everything about him that was printed in German.

Speaker 0

我还让朋友帮我翻译英文的报道。

I had friends translate the English stories for me.

Speaker 0

只要是能找到的他的照片,我都仔细研究。

I studied every photograph of him that I could get my hands on.

Speaker 0

每当我练到肺像要炸开、血管里血都快爆出来的时候,想到他,我就更有劲儿了。

This inspired me to work even harder when I felt my lungs burning as though they would burst and my veins bulging with blood.

Speaker 0

我太爱这种感觉了。

I loved it.

Speaker 0

那时候我就知道,自己正在成长,离成为雷格·帕克又近了一步。

I knew then that I was growing, making one more step towards becoming like Reg Park.

Speaker 0

我就是想要那样的身材,不管得多苦我都愿意扛。

I wanted that body, and I didn't care what I had to go through to get it.

Speaker 0

我的健身房没暖气,天冷的时候简直冷得要命。

My weight room was not heated, so naturally in cold weather, it was freezing.

Speaker 0

我不在乎。

I didn't care.

Speaker 0

哪怕零下好几度,我也照样练。

I trained without heat even on days when the temperature went below zero.

Speaker 0

那时候他还是个少年,却在练一个完全是个人的运动。

And so even though he's a teenager at the time, he's pursuing an individual sport.

Speaker 0

他慢慢明白,得给自己搭个团队才行。

He starts to understand the importance of building, like, this team around him.

Speaker 0

那时候他结识了一堆其他健美爱好者,好多都比他大。

So at this time, he does he says a bunch of other bodybuilder friends, many of which are older.

Speaker 0

其中一个人,彻底点燃了阿诺德追求强大意志力的终身之路。

And one of them sets Arnold on this lifelong path of developing intense mental strength.

Speaker 0

这本书里,阿诺德反复说,一切都在脑子里。

Over and over again in this book, Arnold talks about it's all in the mind.

Speaker 0

一切都在脑子里。

It's all in the mind.

Speaker 0

一切都在脑子里。

It's all in the mind.

Speaker 0

有些日子,我就是提不起劲,训练不如其他时候卖力。

There were certain days when something held me back, and I didn't train as hard as the other days.

Speaker 0

这让我完全想不通。

This was inexplicable to me.

Speaker 0

有些日子,谁都拦不住我。

Some days, nothing could hold me back.

Speaker 0

其他日子,我就状态低迷。

Other days, I'd be down.

Speaker 0

状态差的时候,我连平时一半的重量都扛不动。

On the down days, I couldn't handle anywhere near my normal amount of weight.

Speaker 0

这让我特别困惑。

This puzzled me.

Speaker 0

我和卡尔聊过这事。

Carl and I discussed it.

Speaker 0

他读过很多心理学的东西,他说的很有道理。

He had read a great deal of psychology, and his argument made sense to me.

Speaker 0

事实上,这为我后来的想法打下了基础。

In fact, this helped lay the foundation for my later thinking.

Speaker 0

不是你的身体出了问题,阿诺德。

It's not your body, Arnold.

Speaker 0

你的身体不可能一天到明天就变这么多。

Your body can't change that much from one day to the next.

Speaker 0

问题出在你脑子里。

It's in your mind.

Speaker 0

有些日子,你的目标特别清晰。

On some days, your goals are just clear.

Speaker 0

状态差的时候,你特别需要有人推你一把。

On bad days, you need someone to help you get going.

Speaker 0

那时候,有个人在背后一直喊:‘再来一次吧,阿诺德’,这对我太关键了。

It became extremely important to have somebody standing behind me saying, let's do one more, Arnold.

Speaker 0

加油!

Come on.

Speaker 0

再来一组。

Another set.

Speaker 0

再做一次,阿诺德。

One more rep, Arnold.

Speaker 0

帮别人也一样重要。

And it was just as important for me to help somebody else.

Speaker 0

他坦率地承认,自己就想被人当成特别的人。

And then he openly admits wanting to be perceived as special.

Speaker 0

对他来说,别人觉得他最棒、独一无二,真的特别重要。

Was really important for him to be perceived by other people as being the best, as being special.

Speaker 0

没过多久,人们就开始把我当成了个特别的人。

Says before long, people began looking at me as a special person.

Speaker 0

这 partly 是因为我对自己的看法变了。

Partly, this was a result of my own changing attitude about myself.

Speaker 0

我长得越来越壮,也越来越有自信了。

I was growing, getting bigger, and gaining confidence.

Speaker 0

我得到了以前从来没人给过我的重视。

I was given consideration I had never received before.

Speaker 0

这种突然对我的新态度,让我自尊心爆棚。

This strange new attitude towards me had an incredible effect on my ego.

Speaker 0

它给了我一种我早就渴望的东西。

It supplied me with something I had been craving.

Speaker 0

我不太明白,为什么我这么渴望被特别对待。

I'm not sure why I had this need for special attention.

Speaker 0

我认识的大多数人,根本搞不懂我到底在干啥。

Most of the people I knew didn't really understand what I was doing at all.

Speaker 0

刚开始的时候,我真有点招架不住。

In the beginning, it was kind of hard for me to handle.

Speaker 0

我那时候年轻,又容易受影响。

I was young and impressionable.

Speaker 0

我太想干这件事了,谁也拦不住我。

I knew I wanted to do it so badly that nobody could stop me.

Speaker 0

但很多时候,我其实也怀疑过自己。

But many times, I did question it.

Speaker 0

我老在想,为啥我就这么不一样呢?

I wondered why I was so different.

Speaker 0

我选的这项运动,别人都搞不懂。

My choice of sport confused other people.

Speaker 0

你干嘛非得挑奥地利最没人爱的运动?

Why did you have to pick the least favorite sport in Austria?

Speaker 0

确实如此。

It was true.

Speaker 0

那时候全国就只有二三十个健美爱好者。

We only had 20 or 30 bodybuilders in the entire country at the time.

Speaker 0

我根本答不上来。

I couldn't come up with an answer.

Speaker 0

我真的不知道。

I didn't know.

Speaker 0

完全是凭直觉做的决定。

It had been instinctive.

Speaker 0

我就这么莫名其妙地爱上了它。

I had just fallen in love with it.

Speaker 0

我满脑子想的都是锻炼,谁要是打断我,我都特烦。

My mind was totally locked into working out, and I was annoyed if anything took me away from it.

Speaker 0

他说为了专心搞事业,得把生活中其他所有事都砍掉。

And then he talks about cutting literally every other thing out of his life because he needed stable emotions to concentrate on his work.

Speaker 0

我也需要情绪稳定,绝对自律。

I needed stable emotions, total discipline.

Speaker 0

我得每天早上练两小时、晚上再练两小时,心无旁骛地打磨身材,把身体状态推到顶峰。

I needed to be training for two hours in the morning and two hours at night, concentrating on nothing except perfecting my body and bringing it to its peak.

Speaker 0

但凡我觉得可能拖我后腿的事,我全躲开。

Whatever I thought might hold me back, I avoided.

Speaker 0

这种状态后来还影响到了他和父母的关系。

And it starts affecting the relationship he has with his parents.

Speaker 0

我那时候也把父母彻底撇开了。

I eliminated my parents too.

Speaker 0

他们好像总想见我

It seemed they always wanted to see me.

Speaker 0

结果真等我去了,他们又没话说了

Then when I was around, they had nothing to say.

Speaker 0

后来我都听腻同一个问题了

I grew accustomed to hearing certain question.

Speaker 0

你这是怎么了,阿诺德?

What's wrong with you, Arnold?

Speaker 0

你一点感觉都没有吗?

Don't you feel anything?

Speaker 0

你连情绪都没有?

Don't you have any emotions?

Speaker 0

我每次都只是耸耸肩,装作没听见。

I always let it pass with a shrug.

Speaker 0

我知道我做的事不仅说得通,而且非做不可。

I knew that what I was doing was not only justifiable, it was essential.

Speaker 0

看着自己对身体的掌控越来越强,我的自信也一点点涨起来了。

My self confidence grew as I saw how much control I was gaining over my body.

Speaker 0

两三年下来,我居然彻底改变了我的身体。

In two or three years, I had actually been able to change my body entirely.

Speaker 0

这让我明白了一件事。

That told me something.

Speaker 0

既然我能把身体改造成这样,只要用同样的毅力和决心,我还能改变任何我想改的东西。

If I had been able to change my body that much, I could also, through the same discipline and determination, change anything else I wanted.

Speaker 0

这本书的核心就在这儿。

That is the central point of the book.

Speaker 0

书的结尾,他直接说:我用在健美上的那套方法,现在要照搬过来。

The book ends, and he literally just says, the same stuff I'm doing for bodybuilding, I'm going to apply.

Speaker 0

你看着吧,我一定能做到。

Watch me do it.

Speaker 0

我要打造一个商业帝国。

I'm gonna build a business empire.

Speaker 0

我要当演员。

I'm gonna be an actor.

Speaker 0

我要称霸美国。

I'm gonna dominate America.

Speaker 0

他刚到美国的时候,有个正在交往的女朋友。

He has this living girlfriend when he gets to America.

Speaker 0

我觉得他们从21岁一直在一起,到26岁左右。

I think they're together when he from the age of, like, 21 to 26.

Speaker 0

在她写的关于和阿诺德关系的书里,她谈到他们看待生活的态度截然不同。

And in the book that she wrote about her relationship with Arnold, she talks about how differently they looked at life.

Speaker 0

她说,我总觉得生活是被动发生的,而阿诺德却觉得生活是可以主动掌控的。

She said, I looked at life as that's something that happened, and Arnold looked at life as something that was directed.

Speaker 0

他说,既然我能靠自律和决心把身体改变到这种地步,那我同样也能用这套方法改变其他任何我想改的东西。

And he's saying, so here, if I had been able to change my body that much, I could also, through the same discipline and determination, change anything else I wanted.

Speaker 0

我能改掉坏习惯,彻底扭转对生活的看法。

I could change my habits, my whole outlook on life.

Speaker 0

在那些早期年头,除了健美,我对其他任何事都提不起兴趣。

During these early years, I didn't care how I felt about anything except bodybuilding.

Speaker 0

它占满了我每一天的每一分钟,耗尽了我所有的精力。

It consumed every minute of my days and all my best effort.

Speaker 0

我知道,只要你能通过调整饮食和锻炼改变自己的体型,就能把同样的原则用在任何其他事情上。

I know that if you can change your diet and exercise program to give yourself a different body, you can apply the same principles to anything else.

Speaker 0

秘诀就藏在我在健身房学到的三步法里:自信、积极的心态,还有脚踏实地的努力。

The secret is contained in a three part formula I learned in the gym, self confidence, a positive mental attitude, and honest hard work.

Speaker 0

很多人都知道这些原则,但真能照着做的却寥寥无几。

Many people are aware of these principles, but very few can put them into practice.

Speaker 0

每天我都能听到有人说:我太胖了。

Every day, I hear someone say, I'm too fat.

Speaker 0

我得减掉二十五磅,可就是办不到。

I need to lose 25 pounds, but I can't.

Speaker 0

我怎么都看不到进步。

I never seem to improve.

Speaker 0

要是我有这种心态,还这么没毅力,我真瞧不起自己。

I would hate myself if I had that kind of attitude if I were that weak.

Speaker 0

只要下定决心,我随时都能轻松、无痛地瘦个十到四十磅。

I could lose 10 to 40 pounds rapidly, easily, painlessly by simply setting my mind to do it.

Speaker 0

靠着健美教会我的那种严苛自律,我啥事儿都能准备好。

By observing the principles of strict discipline that bodybuilding taught me, I can prepare myself for anything.

Speaker 0

刚才我跟朋友埃里克一起上了台,他是Ramp的联合创始人兼CEO。

I was just on stage at an event with my friend Eric, who's the cofounder and CEO of Ramp.

Speaker 0

我往右边一看,发现Eric夹克袖子上写着:客户赢了,我们才赢。

When I looked over to my right, I noticed that on the sleeve of Eric's jacket, it said we win when our customers win.

Speaker 0

Ramp是本播客的冠名赞助商,它帮客户赢的方式就是帮你省时间、省钱、增加收入。

Ramp is the presenting sponsor of this podcast, and the way that Ramp helps their customers win is by helping you save time, save money, and grow revenue.

Speaker 0

使用Ramp的公司,平均能把开支降低5%。

The median company running on Ramp cuts their expenses by 5%.

使用Ramp的公司,收入平均还能增长16%。

The median company running on Ramp also grows their revenue by 16%.

Speaker 0

当你用Ramp运营生意,而对手还在用老办法,你就能积累出越来越大的优势。

So when you're running your business on Ramp and your competitors are not, you have a massive competitive advantage that compounds over time.

Speaker 0

Ramp是唯一一个把财务团队效率和幸福感都搞定的一站式平台。

Ramp is the only all in one platform designed to make your finance team faster and happier.

Speaker 0

我认识的很多顶尖CEO和创始人,都在用Ramp。

Many of the top CEOs and founders that I know run their business on Ramp.

Speaker 0

我自己就用Ramp,你也该试试。

I run my business on Ramp, and you should too.

Speaker 0

现在就去 ramp.com,看看他们怎么帮你节省时间、省钱、提升收入。

Go to ramp.com today to learn how they can help your business save time, save money, and grow revenue.

Speaker 0

就是 ramp.com。

That is ramp.com.

Speaker 0

然后他就又重复了一遍。

And so then he repeats.

Speaker 0

周围的人都说:嘿。

Everybody around him is like, hey.

Speaker 0

这习惯真有点怪。

This is a really weird habit.

Speaker 0

你跟一群怪人、边缘人混在一起。

You're in this odd subculture with these other freaks and misfits.

Speaker 0

你做的事,根本不是大家期待的那样。

You're not doing what we expect you to do.

Speaker 0

他对大家说,唯一正经的生活方式就是当银行职员、秘书、医生或者销售,找份稳定的工作,干点正经事。

And says to them, the only acceptable way of life was being a banker, a secretary, a doctor, or a salesman, taking some kind of regular job, doing something legitimate.

Speaker 0

我决定练出一身肌肉,去拿健美先生冠军,这完全超出了他们的理解范围。

My decision to build my body and be mister Universe was totally beyond their comprehension.

Speaker 0

我只听自己内心的声音和直觉。

I listened only to my inner voice and my instincts.

Speaker 0

别人都根本没法理解我为啥这么拼。

Everybody else didn't understand my drive at all.

Speaker 0

阿诺德特别擅长把那些负面声音直接屏蔽掉。

And Arnold does a really good job of essentially just shutting out this negativity.

Speaker 0

要是谁说他坏话,或者老是消极悲观,他立马就把这人从生活里删了。

If you say negative things about him, if you have a, you know, pessimistic attitude, he just cuts you out of his life.

Speaker 0

但他也清楚,自己待的这个环境不对,得去美国。

But he also realizes he's in the wrong culture, and he needs to get to America.

Speaker 0

我真正的梦想,就是想办法去美国。

My real aspiration was somehow to get to America.

Speaker 0

我一直觉得奥地利像个牢笼,憋得慌。

I'd always had a claustrophobic feeling about Austria.

Speaker 0

我得赶紧离开这儿。

I got to get out of here.

Speaker 0

这地方太小了。

It's not big enough.

Speaker 0

闷得人透不过气。

It's stifling.

Speaker 0

这儿容不下我成长。

It won't allow me to expand.

Speaker 0

连人们的想法都特别狭隘。

Even people's ideas were small.

Speaker 0

大家都太安于现状,对一切都习以为常。

There was too much contentment, too much acceptance of things as they had always been.

Speaker 0

所以他一满十八岁,就得去当兵。

And so when he turns 18, he has to go to serve in the army.

Speaker 0

奥地利规定,服兵役一年是强制的。

It says one year of service was obligatory in Austria.

Speaker 0

这里你会看到阿诺德身上两种看似矛盾的特质:他极度自律,但同时也难以管束、绝不妥协,还特别敢冒险。

And there's two kind of contradictory traits of Arnold that you'll see here where he's extremely disciplined, but also unmanageable and uncompromising and willing to take a lot of risks.

Speaker 0

他在这段故事里说,为了参加自己的第一场比赛,居然在新兵训练期间擅自离队。

I mean, he for the story he tells here, he essentially goes AWOL during basic training so he could take part in his first competition.

Speaker 0

结果被关了一周军事监狱,可他压根不在乎。

And as a result, has to spend a week in military prison, and he doesn't care at all.

Speaker 0

所以他后来讲,当兵对他来说是一段不错的经历。

So he says, for me, the army was good experience.

Speaker 0

我喜欢那种条条框框,那种严明有序的结构。

I like the regimentation, the firm rigid structure.

Speaker 0

纪律这东西,对我来说一点都不新鲜。

Discipline was not a new thing to me.

Speaker 0

他还讲了自己怎么偷偷溜出基地,去参加人生第一场赛事——欧洲青少年先生大赛。

And so he talks about sneaking off the base and competing in his first tournament, which is mister Europe junior.

Speaker 0

结果他赢了。

He winds up winning.

Speaker 0

他说,我特别享受这种突然的关注。

He says, I love the sudden attention.

Speaker 0

我百分百确定,自己正在通往世界最强健美运动员的路上。

I knew for certain that I was on my way to becoming the world's greatest bodybuilder.

Speaker 0

我觉得自己已经是世界上数一数二的了。

I felt I was already one of the best in the world.

Speaker 0

当然,那时候我连前五千名都排不上,但在我心里,我早就已经是第一了。

Obviously, I wasn't even in the top 5,000, but in my mind, I was already the best.

Speaker 0

军队可不买账。

The army was not impressed.

Speaker 0

他们抓我的时候,我正翻墙回来。

They caught me as I was climbing back over the wall.

Speaker 0

我在牢里坐了七天,就盖条毯子,坐在冰冷的石凳上,几乎没吃啥东西。

I sat in jail for seven days with only a blanket on a cold stone bench and almost no food.

Speaker 0

但我有我的奖杯,就算他们把我关上一整年,我也无所谓。

But I had my trophy, and I didn't care if they locked me up for a whole year.

Speaker 0

这一切都值了。

It had been worth it.

Speaker 0

我都记不清那本书里写的是谁了,其他读过的关于阿诺德的书也一样。

And I can't remember who's in this book or the other books I read about Arnold.

Speaker 0

他写了两本自传,一本是三十岁的时候,另一本是七十多岁的时候。

He wrote two autobiographies, one when he was 30, one when was in seventies.

Speaker 0

我都读过。

I read both.

Speaker 0

我还读了他那位……你知道的,现任女友写的关于他的书。

I read the book that his, you know, living girlfriend wrote about him.

Speaker 0

但我存着一句特别有启发的话,想读给你听,能让你明白他当时是怎么想的。

But there's a quote that I have saved that I wanna read that I think really is instructive and gives you an understanding of the way he looked at it at this point.

Speaker 0

他干嘛非得这么极端?

Why the hell is he so extreme?

Speaker 0

他说,这是我唯一的出路。

He says this was my only way out.

Speaker 0

我突然明白,健美就是为我而生的。

It became clear to me that bodybuilding was the thing for me.

Speaker 0

那时候,这事儿就该是我干的。

This is what I was meant for at that time.

Speaker 0

我清楚地看到了自己能达成什么,这给了我巨大的动力。

And I then saw very clearly what I could achieve, and that gave me a tremendous amount of motivation.

Speaker 0

别人一天练两小时,我却一天练四小时,一天练两次,有时候甚至练三回、四回,简直不正常。

Instead of training two hours a day like most other people did, I would train twice a day for four hours, totally abnormal, and sometimes three times a day, and sometimes four times a day.

Speaker 0

中午我回家,就专门花一小时做仰卧起坐,多出别人没有的那一个小时,只为超过所有人。

I would go home during my lunchtime and then do for an hour straight just sit ups to get that extra hour that no one else had gotten in, just to be ahead of everyone else.

Speaker 0

真正让冠军和第二名、甚至失败者区分开的,是心理上的优势。

What separates the champion from the guy that is second best or the loser is the person who really has the psychological advantage.

Speaker 0

一切都在脑子里。

Everything is in the mind.

Speaker 0

我有心理上的优势。

I had a psychological advantage.

Speaker 0

我当时别无选择。

I had no other things available.

Speaker 0

有了这种动力,自然就形成了这种念头:这可是我跳出这个小镇、这个村子的唯一出路。

It was easy to have that drive and develop this kind of attitude of this is my only way out of this town, out of this village.

Speaker 0

我一直觉得,练健美才是我唯一的出路。

I always felt my way out was through bodybuilding.

Speaker 0

我根本想不出别的办法。

I couldn't have figured out any other way.

Speaker 0

他离开奥地利,去了柏林,在健身房当教练,想挣点小钱。

He gets out of Austria, goes to Berlin, working in a gym as a trainer, trying to make a little bit of money.

Speaker 0

那时候他穷得叮当响。

He's really struggling financially at this point.

Speaker 0

他白天教别人训练,晚上还得练自己,就为了能参加健美先生宇宙大赛。

He's So training other people during the day and then working on his own body because he wants to compete in mister universe.

Speaker 0

那时候,我脑子里就一件事,而且只有一件事——当上健美先生宇宙冠军。

At that point, my own thinking was tuned into one thing and one thing only, becoming mister universe.

Speaker 0

在我自己心里,我已经是健美先生了。

In my own mind, I was mister universe.

Speaker 0

我脑子里清清楚楚地看见自己站在台上,手里拿着奖杯。

I had this absolutely clear vision of myself up on the stage with the trophy.

Speaker 0

我觉得迟早有一天,全世界都会看到这一幕,至于要吃多少苦才能走到那天,我根本不在乎。

It was only a matter of time before the whole world would be able to see it too, and it made no difference to me how much I had to struggle to get there.

Speaker 0

我得过两种生活。

I had to live a split life.

Speaker 0

他老说这人几乎没什么理论知识。

So he talks a lot about it's such a this guy has almost no theoretical knowledge.

Speaker 0

全靠实践,靠一遍遍试错、不断摸索出来的经验。

It's all practical trial such a such a practical knowledge through trial and error, through experimentation.

Speaker 0

他七十年代学到的那些东西,直到今天还有人照着做。

And many of the things that he's learning now in the seventies, people used to this very day.

Speaker 0

所以他讲,自己得过两种生活——一边当健身俱乐部的教练。

And so he says, had to live a split life acting as an instructor to the club, to the health club.

Speaker 0

这是吉姆。

This is Jim.

Speaker 0

一边给健身俱乐部的会员当教练,另一边又拼命训练,争取拿健美先生冠军。

To the health club clients on one hand and trying to train myself for the mister universe title on the other.

Speaker 0

这真让人抓狂。

It was frustrating.

Speaker 0

那些根本不会从我教的东西里受益的人,却总占着我的时间。

People who would never benefit from what I told them kept taking my time.

Speaker 0

他们付了钱来健身房,但根本就是敷衍了事,一点诚意都没有。

They paid and came to the gym, but it was a disgusting, superficial effort on their part.

Speaker 0

就只是走个过场,做些软绵绵的锻炼,自己宠着自己。

They merely went through the motions, doing sissy workouts, pampering themselves.

Speaker 0

可我多想把这些浪费掉的时间用在正事上啊。

And there was so much I wanted to do with these wasted hours.

Speaker 0

我早晚都练。

I trained both morning and evening.

Speaker 0

这正是后来风靡一时的分部训练法的开端。

It was the beginning of the split routine that would later become famous.

Speaker 0

但我一开始这么练,纯粹是因为方便。

But I got into it originally because it was expedient.

Speaker 0

那时候根本没什么理论依据。

There was no initial theory involved.

Speaker 0

我早上九点到十一点练,晚上七点到九点再练一遍。

I worked out from nine to eleven in the morning and then again from seven to nine at night.

Speaker 0

我简直不敢相信效果这么好。

I couldn't believe the results.

Speaker 0

他还谈到,就像锻炼身体一样,他学会了锤炼自己的意志。

And then again, he talks about learning to strengthen his mind just like he's learning to strengthen his body.

Speaker 0

那时候他还很年轻,已经意识到,没上场之前,你就能先把自己打败。

He's still very, very young at this point, and he realizes that you can actually defeat yourself before you even get on the field.

Speaker 0

虽然自信在增长,但他心里还是有个挥之不去的念头——输家心态。

Even though his confidence is growing, he still has an element to him, which he calls a loser's mentality.

Speaker 0

他后来把这个毛病改掉了。

This is something he fixes.

Speaker 0

他其实挺瞧不起自己的,正因如此,他才下定决心改。

He's kinda disgusted by himself, actually, and that causes him to fix this.

Speaker 0

他去参加比赛前,翻看所有对手的照片。

So he goes to this competition, and he's looking at all the photographs of the people that he has to compete against.

Speaker 0

这是在比赛之前的事。

This is before the competition.

Speaker 0

他说:不行。

Says, no.

Speaker 0

我心想,那个冠军我肯定赢不了。

I decided I can't beat that guy who won.

Speaker 0

我就盯着第二名看。

I'd look at the second place winner.

Speaker 0

不行。

No.

展开剩余字幕(还有 416 条)
Speaker 0

我赢不了他。

I can't beat him.

Speaker 0

我看的是排第三的那个家伙。

I look at the guy who plays third.

Speaker 0

我也赢不了他。

I can't beat him either.

Speaker 0

我一个个往下看,想找找有没有我能赢的人。

I went right down the line trying to figure out who I might beat.

Speaker 0

看到第八第九名的时候,我觉得要是拼一把,或许还有点希望。

I got to eighth or ninth place and figured I might have a chance if I tried hard enough.

Speaker 0

这完全是自暴自弃的想法。

It was a loser's way of looking at it.

Speaker 0

我还没参赛,连一年的训练都还没完,就已经把自己给打败了。

I defeated myself before I even entered, before I'd even completed the year's training.

Speaker 0

但我那时候还年轻。

But I was young.

Speaker 0

我当时只是在保护自己。

I was being self protective.

Speaker 0

那时候我还没真正形成对积极思维和心智力量的理解。

I hadn't yet pulled together my ideas about positive thinking and the powers of the mind.

Speaker 0

有一次比赛,他本来觉得自己肯定能赢,结果只拿了第二。

And so one of these competitions he thought he was actually going to win, he comes in second.

Speaker 0

等他从最初的打击中缓过来,他做了一件特别聪明的事。

And after he gets over the initial emotional shock, he actually does something really smart.

Speaker 0

他说,等我从输掉比赛的失落中走出来,就开始认真琢磨自己到底输在哪儿。

He says, once I was over the initial disappointment of losing, I began to trying to understand exactly why I had lost.

Speaker 0

我逼自己说实话。

I tried to be honest.

Speaker 0

我努力客观地分析问题。

I tried to analyze it fairly.

Speaker 0

我身上还有很多明显的短板。

I still had some serious weaknesses.

Speaker 0

对我来说,这真是个转折点。

For me, this was a real turning point.

Speaker 0

我决定回去,花一年时间补上那些从来没认真对待过的东西。

I decided I had to go back and spend a year on the things I had never really given any attention to at all.

Speaker 0

我当时全靠一样东西撑着。

I was relying on one thing.

Speaker 0

我比谁都更有冲劲。

What I had more than anyone else was drive.

Speaker 0

我比谁都更想赢。

I was hungrier than anybody.

Speaker 0

我渴望到心里都疼。

I wanted it so badly it hurt.

Speaker 0

我知道,这世上没人比我更想要这个头衔。

I knew there could be no one else in the world who wanted this title as much as I did.

Speaker 0

这特别特别重要,因为他能去问赢了他的人:你到底是怎么做到的?

And this was really, really important because he's able to ask the person he lost to, the one that the person that won the competition questions after.

Speaker 0

他心想,行吧。

And he thought, okay.

Speaker 0

这人肯定有啥不一样的地方。

This guy must be doing something different.

Speaker 0

他肯定有啥独门绝招。

He must have some kind of special sauce.

Speaker 0

他说我那些训练动作他都做过,但做法完全不一样。

And he says the exercises he named were not different than the ones that I was doing, but he did them in a different way.

Speaker 0

他做的组数比我还多。

His number of repetitions was higher.

Speaker 0

我本来还以为他有啥特别的动作,结果根本不是这么回事。

I had thought perhaps he had some special exercises, but that wasn't true.

Speaker 0

他就死磕那些基础动作。

He concentrated on the standard exercises.

Speaker 0

这,就是他的秘密——专注。

That was his, quote, unquote, secret, concentration.

Speaker 0

和他待上几分钟,我就 painfully 意识到自己有多不足,这也说明了他对生活的追求跟我不一样。

Being around him for a few minutes made me painfully aware of my own shortcomings, and this again talks about the difference of what he wants for his life.

Speaker 0

就连他的朋友、其他健美选手听说后,都惊呆了。

Even his friends, even his fellow bodybuilders when they found out, oh my god.

Speaker 0

你居然拿了第二名。

You came in second.

Speaker 0

他说他们激动得不行。

He says they were ecstatic.

Speaker 0

他们简直被震撼到了。

Their minds were blown.

Speaker 0

他们想大办一场庆功宴,可我脑子里只想着一件事。

They wanted to have a big victory celebration, but there was just one thing in my mind.

Speaker 0

我迫不及待想回健身房,开始为明年的比赛做准备。

I could not wait to get to the gym and start working for next year's contest.

Speaker 0

我一点都没松懈。

I didn't lay off at all.

Speaker 0

我每天准时练两次,别的事全抛到脑后,专心训练。

Twice a day religiously, I put everything else out of my mind and did my work.

Speaker 0

而且每次他跟父母聊,他们都不支持。

And, again, every time he talks to his parents, they're not supportive.

Speaker 0

他们对我离开家去开健身房、不上学、不找正经工作特别生气。

They were upset about me leaving home to manage a gym and refusing to go to school and prepare myself for some respectable profession.

Speaker 0

他们总问:你什么时候才能找份正经工作?什么时候才能稳定下来?

They asked when I was gonna get a real job, when I was gonna become stable.

Speaker 0

我们辛辛苦苦养大的,就是个这样的人?

Is this what we raised, they'd ask?

Speaker 0

一个混日子的?

A bum?

Speaker 0

你打算一直活在梦里到什么时候?

How long are you gonna go living off in this dream world?

Speaker 0

他们说的那些话,我左耳进右耳出,根本没放在心上。

I let everything they said pass over my head.

Speaker 0

我的想法早就超出了这些,超出了工作、超出了奥地利、超出了小地方那点体面。

My thinking went totally beyond that, beyond jobs, beyond Austria, and small town respectability.

Speaker 0

我始终坚持做自己知道非做不可的事。

I continued doing precisely what I knew I needed to do.

Speaker 0

在我心里,只有一条路:爬到顶峰,成为最顶尖的。

In my mind, there was only one possibility for me, and that was to go to the top, to be the best.

Speaker 0

其他所有东西,都不过是达成这个目标的手段。

Everything else was just a means to that end.

Speaker 0

救了我一命的,是我对商业的兴趣。

One thing that saved me was my interest in business.

Speaker 0

他说,当企业家,那就是终极目标了。

So he says that he thought being an entrepreneur, there it was the ultimate.

Speaker 0

再没有什么比当企业家更高尚的了。

There was nothing higher than being an entrepreneur.

Speaker 0

他说,其实我心里早就明白,要想让梦想变现,我得搞懂生意的门道。

So he says, think somewhere in the back of my mind, I realized that I would have to be good at understanding mechanics of business in order to make my dreams profitable.

Speaker 0

我开始把这些用起来。

I began putting this to use.

Speaker 0

我把健美先生大赛亚军的曝光度,转化成了吸引新会员的契机。

I turned the publicity from having placed second in the mister universe contest to attracting new members to my gym.

Speaker 0

没过多久,会员人数就从70人涨到了200人。

In almost no time, I built the membership from 70 to 200.

Speaker 0

我也渐渐明白,健美其实说白了就是娱乐圈。

I also began to understand that bodybuilding was just show business.

Speaker 0

如果我想在这行,或者任何其他领域真正干出名堂——因为他后来把这招用在了所有事情上——我就得把自己变成个表演家。

If I expected it to make it big in this field or any other, because he applies this in for all future endeavors, I had to become a showman.

Speaker 0

由于早期接连成功,他终于有机会见到自己的偶像。

And as a result of a lot the early success that he's having, he gets to meet his idol.

Speaker 0

他能跟雷格·帕克待在一起,直接向他学习。

He gets to spend time with Reg Park and learn directly from him.

Speaker 0

那段时间跟雷格·帕克一起训练,比我之前看任何冠军的资料都管用,一下子把我脑子里的那些困惑全理清了。

Working out with Reg Park for that short time helped me more than anything to clear up this confusions I had about the principles of other champions.

Speaker 0

我明白,你不能光说‘你必须这么做才能得到那个结果’。

I learned that you can't really say, you must do this to get such and such a result.

Speaker 0

你得自己去试,找到最适合自己的方法。

You have to try out certain things and find out what is best for you.

Speaker 0

我一直在向雷格讨教各种建议。

I collected advice from Reg the whole time.

Speaker 0

我把这些都记下来,挑对我最有用的去用。

I wrote it all down and used it as it served me best.

Speaker 0

我发现,量尺寸不仅能让我有成就感,还能给我动力。

I discovered that taking measurements gave me both satisfaction and incentive.

Speaker 0

我定期量小腿、手臂和大腿,只要看到多了八分之一英寸、半英寸,我就特别兴奋。

I measured my calves, arms, and thighs regularly, and I'd be turned on if I saw I'd increase an eighth inch or a half an inch.

Speaker 0

我还在日历上记下每一个细微的尺寸和体重变化。

On a calendar, I kept even fractional changes in measurements and weight.

Speaker 0

我每个月至少找摄影师拍一次照。

I had a photographer take pictures at least once a month.

Speaker 0

我拿放大镜仔细研究每一张照片。

I studied each shot with a magnifying glass.

Speaker 0

你有多想要这个目标?

How bad do you want it?

Speaker 0

你觉得还有多少健美选手也在这么做?

How many other bodybuilders you think are doing that?

Speaker 0

拿放大镜研究他们的照片。

Studying their photographs with a magnifying glass.

Speaker 0

见到雷格·帕克之后,我想成为更好的自己。

Meeting Reg Park made me wanna become a better person.

Speaker 0

我早就觉得自己比谁都强。

I already felt I was better than anyone else.

Speaker 0

他总在那儿自言自语,不断给自己洗脑,逼着自己保持积极心态,坚信自己已经赢了。

He would walk around, so he he constantly talking about brainwashing himself and forcing himself to have a positive mental attitude and believe that he has already won.

Speaker 0

他脑子里早就看见了那个画面。

He sees it in his mind.

Speaker 0

他在书里一遍又一遍地讲可视化。

He talks about visualization over and over again in the book.

Speaker 0

所以他走来走去,老对自己说:我太棒了。

So he's walking around saying, I'm great.

Speaker 0

我是最厉害的。

I'm the greatest.

Speaker 0

我一直在努力说服自己相信这一点。

I was continually trying to convince myself of this.

Speaker 0

我知道自己是个赢家。

I knew I was a winner.

Speaker 0

我知道自己注定要成就大事。

I knew I was destined for great things.

Speaker 0

别人会觉得这种想法简直狂妄自大。

People will say that kind of thinking is totally immodest.

Speaker 0

我同意。

I agree.

Speaker 0

谦虚这词跟我一点关系都没有。

Modesty is not a word that applies to me in any way.

Speaker 0

其实他在讲,你脑子里想的东西有多重要。

So there's actually talks about the importance of, like, what's going on in your mind.

Speaker 0

阿诺德特别有意思的地方就在于,他敢说那些别人拼命想藏起来的事。

And this is what's interesting about Arnold because he's open and honest about things that most people are incentivized to hide.

Speaker 0

所以他坦白了当时自己心里到底在想什么。

And so he talks about what his inner monologue was at this time.

Speaker 0

我从不去比赛是为了参赛。

I never went to a competition to compete.

Speaker 0

我去是为了赢。

I went to win.

Speaker 0

我彻底变成了野兽。

I became a total animal.

Speaker 0

如果你能听到我赛前的内心独白,准会听见我在说:那个领奖台,我配得上。

If you tuned into my thoughts before a competition, you would hear something like, I deserve that pedestal.

Speaker 0

这事儿我认了。

I own it.

Speaker 0

大海都得给我让路。

And the sea ought to part for me.

Speaker 0

赶紧滚开,别挡道。

Just get out of the fucking way.

Speaker 0

我有我的目标。

I'm on a mission.

Speaker 0

让开,把奖杯给我拿过来。

Step aside and give me the trophy.

Speaker 0

我脑子里想象自己站在高高的领奖台上,手里握着奖杯。

I pictured myself high up on the pedestal, trophy in hand.

Speaker 0

别人都站在我下面,我居高临下地看着他们。

Everyone else would be standing below, and I would look down.

Speaker 0

当他没达到自己的期望时,对自己也一样狠得不行。

And then when he would fail to live up to his own expectations, he could be equally as devastating and harsh with himself.

Speaker 0

所以他去了美国,参加了比赛,以为自己肯定能赢,结果却输了。

So he goes to America, competes, thinks he's gonna win, and winds up losing.

Speaker 0

关于这段经历,他是这么说的。

And this is what he said about that experience.

Speaker 0

那天晚上,绝望一下子压了下来。

That night, despair came crashing in.

Speaker 0

我身在异国他乡,远离家人朋友,周围全是陌生人,连话都听不懂。

I was in a foreign country away from my family, away from my friends, surrounded by strange people in a place where I didn't speak the language.

Speaker 0

我一个人悄悄地哭了起来。

I ended up quietly cry wow.

Speaker 0

我在黑暗里默默哭了好几个小时。

I ended up crying quietly in the dark for hours.

Speaker 0

让我崩溃的不是身体不行,而是我的信念和斗志垮了。

It was the fact that I had failed, not my body, but my vision and my drive.

Speaker 0

我根本没尽全力去准备。

I hadn't done everything in my power to prepare.

Speaker 0

一想到这个,我就气得不行。

Thinking this made me furious.

Speaker 0

我对自己说:你还是个彻头彻尾的菜鸟。

You're still a fucking amateur, I told myself.

Speaker 0

我下定决心,再也不要当菜鸟了。

I decided I would never be an amateur again.

Speaker 0

接着他谈到怎么把痛苦变成动力。

And so then he talks about using pain as fuel.

Speaker 0

我开始学会利用成长中所有好的和坏的经历。

I was learning to utilize both the good and the bad points of my upbringing.

Speaker 0

因为爸妈管得严,我从小就特别自律。

Because of my strict parents, I was very disciplined.

Speaker 0

但小时候我缺了一些重要的东西——没得到足够的爱和关心。

However, I didn't get certain things I needed as a child, and so he didn't get love and affection.

Speaker 0

而且那时候,我觉得哥哥才是爸妈的宠儿。

And as he felt his older brother, was, you know, the the favorite.

Speaker 0

所以他讲,我没得到过爱和关心。

And so he says I didn't get, love and affection.

Speaker 0

这让我特别渴望成功,渴望在别的方面赢,渴望做到最好,渴望被人认可。

That made me hungry for achievement, for winning in other ways, for being the best, for being recognized.

Speaker 0

要是小时候我啥都需要的都有了,情绪上也平衡,我根本不会有这么强的拼劲。

If I had gotten everything I needed, meaning emotionally as as a kid and been well balanced, I wouldn't have had my drive.

Speaker 0

正因为我成长过程中有这些负面因素,才让我有了追求成功和认可的驱动力。

So as a result of this negative element in my upbringing, I had a positive drive towards success and recognition.

Speaker 0

我开始在一个没有干扰的地方训练。

I started training in an area where there were no distractions.

Speaker 0

这样我才有了足够的时间专心致志。

That gave me enough time to concentrate.

Speaker 0

我不记得这本书里他到底多少次说了这个词。

I don't know how many times he says that word in this book.

Speaker 0

专心。

Concentrate.

Speaker 0

专心

Focus.

Speaker 0

集中注意力

Concentrate.

Speaker 0

这让我有足够的时间专心琢磨健美到底意味着什么

That gave me enough time to concentrate and find out what bodybuilding was really about.

Speaker 0

我从没一丝一毫怀疑过自己会成功,这份信念让我一直坚持训练、不断尝试

Never was there any even the slightest doubt in my mind that I would make it, and this helped me keep training and keep trying.

Speaker 0

我意志坚定,从不松懈

I was determined and constant.

Speaker 0

我从没想过要停下或中断训练

I never wanted to pause or stop training.

Speaker 0

我一年到头都在练,而那时候大多数健美运动员都会歇上一两个月

I trained twelve months of the year, so most of their bodybuilders at the time would take, like, a month or two off.

Speaker 0

阿诺德一整年都没停过,一刻不停

Arnold went straight through the entire year with no let up.

Speaker 0

其他健美选手大多都不这么做。

Most of the other bodybuilders didn't do that.

Speaker 0

我放弃了很多别人舍不得放下的东西。

I sacrificed a lot of things most bodybuilders didn't want to give up.

Speaker 0

我根本不在乎。

I just didn't care.

Speaker 0

我只想赢,别的都不重要。

I wanted to win more than anything.

Speaker 0

不管得多难,我都照做不误。

And whatever it took, I did.

Speaker 0

虽然他赢了很多比赛,但他身边还是有一群同行健美选手。

And so even though he's winning a bunch of competitions, he has these these peer group, these other bodybuilders.

Speaker 0

他发现自己跟其他顶尖健美选手的想法完全不同。

And he realized he sees very different from even the other elite bodybuilders.

Speaker 0

他在当货车司机时写的那本自传里,也提到过这些。

He talks about this in his other autobiography that he wrote when he was a motor man.

Speaker 0

我来念几段这本书里的原话。

Let me read some quotes from that book.

Speaker 0

顺便说一句,这本书真的特别棒。

It's an excellent book, by the way.

Speaker 0

书名叫《全面回忆》。

It's called Total Recall.

Speaker 0

他们根本受不了每天训练,一群懒货。

They couldn't handle working every day, lazy bastards.

Speaker 0

我就是想快点赚大钱。

I wanted to be rich very quickly.

Speaker 0

对我来说,工作就是探索和享受。

For me, work just meant discovery and fun.

Speaker 0

要是听见谁抱怨‘我太累了’,

If I heard someone complaining, oh, I work so hard.

Speaker 0

我一天干十到十二个小时。

I put in ten and twelve hour days.

Speaker 0

我非得把他钉在十字架上不可。

I would crucify him.

Speaker 0

一天明明就二十四个小时,你到底在扯什么?

What the fuck are you talking about when the day is twenty four hours?

Speaker 0

你还干了点啥?

What else did you do?

Speaker 0

我在健身房里找到了乐趣,因为每一次举重、每一组训练,都让我离目标更近一步。

I found joy in the gym because every rep and every set was getting me one step closer to my goal.

Speaker 0

要是错过一次训练,我简直要吐了。

It would make me sick to miss a workout.

Speaker 0

我知道,要是不练,第二天早上根本没脸照镜子。

I knew I couldn't look at myself in the mirror the next morning if I didn't do it.

Speaker 0

我非得成为世界上最强的不可。

I had a need to be the best in the world.

Speaker 0

我跟普通人完全不一样。

There was nothing normal about me.

Speaker 0

我的动力一点都不正常。

My drive was not normal.

Speaker 0

我对人生目标的设想,也跟普通人不一样。

My vision of where I wanted to go in life was not normal.

Speaker 0

什么常规生活、常规轨迹,对我来说就跟氪石一样致命。

The whole idea conventional existence of a conventional existence was like kryptonite to me.

Speaker 0

训练又累又耗时,但我完全沉浸进去了。

The training was intense and time consuming, and I took to it completely.

Speaker 0

彼得·蒂尔有一句话,是我最爱的名言之一。

Peter Thiel is one of my all time favorite quotes.

Speaker 0

就写在他那本《从0到1》里。

It's in his book, Zero to One.

Speaker 0

他说,我见过最强大的规律就是:成功的人总能在别人想不到的地方发现价值,因为他们用第一性原理思考商业,而不是照搬套路。

It says the single most powerful pattern I have noticed is that successful people find value in unexpected places, and they do this by thinking about business from first principles instead of formulas.

Speaker 0

我合伙人Applovin做的新广告平台Axon,就是这么干的——这是这一代最强大的广告平台。

That is exactly what my partner, Applovin, has done with their new advertising platform, Axon is the most powerful advertising platform in a generation.

Speaker 0

Axon 能让你抓住用户的全程专注。

Axon allows you to capture undivided attention.

Speaker 0

Axon 的广告是全屏视频,平均观看时长高达35秒,留存率远超其他广告平台。

Axon ads are full screen videos that are watched for an average of thirty five seconds, retention that blows other ad platforms out of the water.

Speaker 0

你几分钟内就能在 Axon 上线广告。

You can launch on Axon in minutes.

Speaker 0

你定目标,Axon 来帮你实现。

You set the goal and Axon achieves it.

Speaker 0

不用复杂设置,也不需要专业技能,Axon 一上手就快速放量。

No complex setup, no expertise needed, and Axon scales quickly.

Speaker 0

它能把你的广告推给超过十亿潜在用户。

They can put your ads in front of over a billion potential customers.

Speaker 0

不少商家已经靠它当天就见效,日投放高达几十万美元,收入暴涨数百万,可大多数广告主连这个渠道都还没听说过。

Other businesses have seen immediate results scaled to hundreds of thousands of dollars of spend per day and increased their revenue by millions, and most advertisers aren't even thinking about this channel yet.

Speaker 0

目前不到1%的广告主能用上 Axon。

Less than 1% of advertisers have access to Axon.

Speaker 0

所以你想快速上手?直接去 axon.ai/founders 就行。

So you wanna get started quickly, and you can do that by going to axon.ai/founders.

Speaker 0

就是 axon.ai/founders。

That is axon.ai/founders.

Speaker 0

在继续之前,我得跟你们聊聊 Vanta。

And before we get back into this episode, I need to tell you about Vanta.

Speaker 0

Vanta。

Vanta.

Speaker 0

Vanta。

Vanta.

Speaker 0

Vanta 能帮你证明公司安全可靠,让客户更愿意用你的产品或服务。

Vanta helps your company prove your secure so more customers will use your product or service.

Speaker 0

你可以把 Vanta 当成一个随时在线、AI 驱动的安全专家,跟着你一起成长。

You can think of Vanta as your always on AI powered security expert who scales with you.

Speaker 0

你生意越大,安全需求就越复杂,一复杂就容易乱。

The more your business grows, the more complex your security needs get, and that complexity turns into chaos.

Speaker 0

Vanta 能把这团乱麻收拾得井井有条。

Vanta tames that chaos.

Speaker 0

Vanta 自动帮你完成合规流程,持续监控你的安全措施,还提供一个统一的合规与风险视图。

Vanta automates compliance, continuously monitors your controls, and gives you a single source of truth for compliance and risk.

Speaker 0

不管你是在快速成长的初创公司,还是大型企业,Vanta 都能无缝融入你现有的工作流程。

So whether you're a fast growing startup or an enterprise company, Vanta fits easily into your existing workflows.

Speaker 0

这样你就能安心发展业务,让客户真正信任你。

This allows you to keep growing a company that your customers can trust.

Speaker 0

很多公司都要求你先拿认证才肯签合同,不然你就会白白错过订单。

Many companies won't sign contracts unless you're certified, and this is causing you to lose out on sales.

Speaker 0

所以,平均来说,用过 Vanta 的客户 ROI 都能飙到 526%。

That is why the average Vanta customer reports a 526% return on investment after becoming a Vanta customer.

Speaker 0

Vanta 能帮你更快、更省力地赢得信任、促成交易、守住安全。

Vanta will help you win trust, close deals, and stay secure faster and with less effort.

Speaker 0

去 vanta.com/founders 注册,立减 1000 美元。

Go to vanta.com/founders, and you'll get a thousand dollars off.

Speaker 0

就是 vanta.com/founders。

That is vanta.com/founders.

Speaker 0

所以呢,我得提一下他在这本书里反复强调的一件事。

So then I gotta bring up something that he repeats a lot in this book over and over again.

Speaker 0

他一直在用这些积极的自我暗示洗脑自己。

He is brainwashing himself with these positive man mantras.

Speaker 0

顺便说一句,这种桥段我在传记里见过无数次了。

I've seen this a million times in these biographies, by the way.

Speaker 0

你是个赢家,阿诺德。

You are a winner, Arnold.

Speaker 0

我把这句话写下来,贴得到处都是,一抬头就能看见。

I wrote this down and put it everywhere where I would see it.

Speaker 0

我每天都要念上十几遍。

I repeated it a dozen times a day.

Speaker 0

我有个特别疯狂的故事,得赶紧跟你讲讲。

So I have a crazy story for you that I gotta tell you about real quick.

Speaker 0

有个叫托德·格雷夫斯的人。

There's this guy named Todd Graves.

Speaker 0

我做过一期关于他的《创始人》节目。

I did an episode of Founders on on him.

Speaker 0

那期节目后来传到了托德·格雷夫斯那儿。

The episode winds up getting back to Todd Graves.

Speaker 0

他听了之后,就开始追《创始人》这个播客了。

He listens to it, starts listening to Founders.

Speaker 0

托德·格雷夫斯是Raising Cane's的创始人。

Todd Graves is the founder of Raising Cane's.

Speaker 0

他一个人持有这家公司超过90%的股份。

He owns over 90% of this business.

Speaker 0

他这么干了整整三十年。

He's been working on it for thirty years.

Speaker 0

就靠卖鸡块,他把自己干成了身价超二百亿美元的富豪。

He has ground himself to a net worth of excess of $20,000,000,000 selling chicken fingers.

Speaker 0

我和托德待了四个半小时。

I got to spend four and a half hours with Todd.

Speaker 0

他是我新节目的嘉宾。

He was a guest on my new show.

Speaker 0

我觉得你可能已经知道了,但我除了《创始人》之外还开了个新节目。

I assume you already know this, but I launched a new show in addition to founders.

Speaker 0

叫《大卫中心》。

It's called David Center.

Speaker 0

如果你还没关注,就去你听播客的地方搜一下吧。

If you're not already following it, please just search wherever you're listening to this.

Speaker 0

记得关注这个节目。

Follow that show.

Speaker 0

我不只是在这儿念传记,而是和一些最了不起的在世创业者做深度对谈。

Instead of me just sitting here going through biographies, I I actually have long form conversations with some of the greatest living founders.

Speaker 0

我和托德在播客里聊了整整两个小时。

Me and Todd speak two hours on the podcast.

Speaker 0

你可以去看那一集。

You can watch that episode.

Speaker 0

我强烈推荐你看看。

I highly recommend you do.

Speaker 0

之后我们又聊了两个半小时。

Then we spend two and a half hours after that talking.

Speaker 0

那集是在Todd三十年前亲手建的第一家Raising Cane's店里拍的。

We shot that episode in the very first Raising Canes that Todd built with his own hands thirty years ago.

Speaker 0

他当时住在店铺后面一间破旧的小公寓里。

He lived in a shitty little apartment behind the store.

Speaker 0

他整天忙到精疲力尽,好不容易回公寓想躺会儿,却又忍不住偷瞄窗外。

So he'd work all the time to exhaustion, go try to crash in the apartment, but, like, would peek out the window.

Speaker 0

只要看到 Drive-Thru 排起长队,他就立马从公寓冲出去,回去继续干活。

And when there would be, like, a backup in the in the drive in the drive through, he'd, like, run from his apartment and go back to work.

Speaker 0

但他做的事,简直疯狂。

But what he did was crazy.

Speaker 0

后来,他把整栋公寓楼都买下了。

Much later, he buys the entire apartment building.

Speaker 0

就是那种特别破旧的两层小 duplex,但他把当年创业时住的那间公寓,完全按他 23 岁时的样子原样复刻了一遍。

It's kinda like this, like, crappy little two two story duplex, and then he rebuilt the apartment that he lived in when he started the company to the exact specification of what it was when he was 23, thirty years ago.

Speaker 0

屋里挂的照片,全是他那时候拍的。

I'm talking the pictures in there are pictures of him at that age.

Speaker 0

所有电器,都是他当年用的那台电视。

All the technology, it's it's the TV he had.

Speaker 0

录像机也是,你知道的,一点高科技都没有。

The VCR, there's, you know, there's no technology.

Speaker 0

那是九十年代初的事了。

This is the early nineties.

Speaker 0

床单被套都还是原来的那套。

The bedspread is the same.

Speaker 0

那是个两居室的公寓。

It was a two bedroom apartment.

Speaker 0

一间是他睡的卧室。

One bedroom he slept in.

Speaker 0

另一间成了他的办公室。

The other bedroom is the office.

Speaker 0

你一进办公室,

You go in the office.

Speaker 0

就能看到那些老式电脑。

Of course, you see these, old school computers.

Speaker 0

还有传真机。

You see a fax machine.

Speaker 0

但更重要的是,整个房间贴满了他打印出来的积极自我暗示。

But more important than that, you see these printed out positive affirmations that he has in over the entire room.

Speaker 0

他简直是在给自己洗脑,逼自己别放弃,逼自己相信自己。

He was literally brainwashing himself not to give up, brainwashing himself to believe in himself.

Speaker 0

他说过,除非有人疯狂地追求一个愿景,否则什么都不会发生。

He says stuff like nothing ever happens unless someone pursues a vision fanatically.

Speaker 0

有激情的人,就像骑着一匹狂野的马。

A man of passion rides a mad horse.

Speaker 0

这种东西啊,一共有十几张。

There was, like, a dozen of these things.

Speaker 0

阿诺德在七十年代干的也是这一套。

Arnold is doing the exact same thing in the nineteen seventies.

Speaker 0

人的脑子,力量可大了。

The mind is a powerful place.

Speaker 0

你往脑子里塞啥,它就真会影响你。

What you feed it affects you in a powerful way.

Speaker 0

结果就是这样。

And this is the end result.

Speaker 0

他最后赢得了1967年的健美先生冠军。

He winds up winning mister universe 1967.

Speaker 0

我朝台下的观众看了一眼。

I looked out at the audience.

Speaker 0

他们都在尖叫。

They were screaming.

Speaker 0

我完全被这荒诞又壮丽的场面给震住了。

I was caught up in the strange unreal splendor of it.

Speaker 0

我心里想:你这么多年的苦练,就是为了这一刻。

I thought, this is what you have been training for, this moment.

Speaker 0

我根本没法把这一切都消化掉。

There's just no way I could take it all in.

Speaker 0

就像要举起一件根本搬不动的东西一样。

It was like confronting something impossible to lift.

Speaker 0

我拼命想弄明白这到底意味着什么。

I tried to realize what it meant.

Speaker 0

我对自己说:你现在正在经历的,就是你一生中最关键的时刻。

What is happening to you right now, now, I told myself, is the most important moment in your life.

Speaker 0

这正是我十岁那年下定决心,要成为某个领域里最伟大的人时,心里真正想的。

It was what I had meant when I made up my mind at the age of 10 to be the greatest person in one field.

Speaker 0

我当时二十岁,已经觉得自己是史上最棒的了。

I was 20 years old, and I was already the greatest and the best.

Speaker 0

我在心里一遍遍对自己说。

I repeated it over to myself.

Speaker 0

阿诺德·施瓦辛格,健美先生,1967年。

Arnold Schwarzenegger, mister universe, 1967.

Speaker 0

史蒂夫·乔布斯说过一句特别棒的话,有人问他:‘你达成目标后怎么办?’

Steve Jobs has the best advice when, you know, somebody asks, like, what do you do when you accomplish something?

Speaker 0

他说,你做出点了不起的东西,然后接着干下一票。

He was like, well, you make something wonderful, and then you just go and do it again.

Speaker 0

像阿诺德这样的顶尖人物,绝不会躺在功劳簿上睡大觉。

And Arnold, like anybody great, is not gonna wrestle on their laurels, not gonna sleep on their wins.

Speaker 0

所以他宣布:我要重新制定全年无休的训练计划。

So he says, I set myself a schedule to train straight through the entire year again.

Speaker 0

我开始疯狂练身体,早上最早进健身房,晚上最晚走,拼了命地练。

I began blasting my body in the gym, going early in the morning, staying late at night, doing some ferocious work.

Speaker 0

我一遍又一遍地问自己:怎样才能做到与众不同?

I asked myself over and over again, what can you do to be special and different?

Speaker 0

于是每周一次,我就带个训练伙伴,扛着器械开车去乡下。

So once a week, I took a training partner, and we drove out into the country with our weight.

Speaker 0

他在森林里搞的那种训练,简直疯了,跟角斗士似的。

So he does this, like, crazy, almost, like, gladiator kind of workouts in the forest.

Speaker 0

他甚至光着身子练。

He's gonna do this, like, naked too.

Speaker 0

他说,我们每次只练一个动作,专门针对某块肌肉。

He says, we limited ourselves to one exercise for particular body part.

Speaker 0

我记得第一天,我们扛着250磅重的杠铃进森林,连续深蹲了三个小时。

I remember the first day we carried 250 pounds out into the forest, and we did squats for three hours straight.

Speaker 0

最后我们每人做了大概55组深蹲。

We ended up doing something like 55 sets of squats each.

Speaker 0

最后一小时简直像没完没了,但真管用。

The last hour seemed endless, but it worked.

Speaker 0

我们的大腿胀得像气球一样。

Our thighs pumped up like balloons.

Speaker 0

第一天把大腿肌肉彻底搞垮了,整整一周走路都一瘸一拐的。

That first day, we gave our thigh muscles such a shock that we couldn't walk right for a week.

Speaker 0

连爬都爬不动。

We could barely crawl.

Speaker 0

腿上从来没受过这么狠的罪,55组啊。

Our legs had never experienced anything as tough as those 55 sets.

Speaker 0

后来我们就把这当成固定项目了。

We made it a regular thing.

Speaker 0

我们还带女孩子去那儿做饭。

We brought girls out there to cook.

Speaker 0

我们在户外生了火。

We made a fire outdoors.

Speaker 0

练得累是累,但特别开心。

We worked hard, but we had a good time.

Speaker 0

练完那套猛击肌肉的训练,我们就喝红酒、啤酒,喝得醉醺醺的,像19世纪的老式举重运动员一样疯闹。

After the muscle shocking sessions, we drank wine and beer and got drunk and carried on like old time weightlifters back in the eighteen hundreds.

Speaker 0

简直疯到没边了。

It became pure insanity.

Speaker 0

我们一边烤肉,围着篝火坐着,一边谈情说爱。

We cooked, sat around the fire, and made love.

Speaker 0

我们自己都入戏了,觉得自己就是古罗马的角斗士,原始的雄性动物。

We got into this trip that we were gladiators, male animals.

Speaker 0

我们光着身子在大自然里游泳,有吃有喝,还有女人相伴。

We swam naked out in nature and had all this food, wine, and women.

Speaker 0

我们吃得像野兽,行为也跟野兽没两样。

We ate like animals and acted like animals.

Speaker 0

我们太上瘾了,最后成了每周固定节目:吃鲜肉、喝红酒、练肌肉。

We got off on it so much, it became a weekly routine, eating fresh meat and drinking wine and exercising.

Speaker 0

你得喜欢你做的事,而我们,真的爱死了这种日子。

It's important that you like what you do, and we loved it.

Speaker 0

我们玩得很开心,但训练也超级狠。

We had fun, but we also did astonishing workouts.

Speaker 0

我们在户外干那些折磨人的训练。

We did torturous workouts in the fresh air.

Speaker 0

我们互相较劲,谁也不服谁。

We challenged each other.

Speaker 0

那会儿真是吃尽了苦头。

We experienced a lot of pain.

Speaker 0

我慢慢明白,疼着疼着,反而上瘾了。

I knew pain could become pleasure.

Speaker 0

其实我们是在靠痛苦变强。

We were benefiting from pain.

Speaker 0

我们硬是冲破了疼痛的极限,把肌肉给震醒了。

We were breaking through the pain barrier and shocking the muscle.

Speaker 0

我们把这疼当好事,因为越疼,长得越快。

We looked at this pain as a positive thing because we grew.

Speaker 0

从痛苦中长出肌肉,那种感觉简直太棒了。

It was a fantastic feeling to gain size from pain.

Speaker 0

突然间,我开始期待它了,觉得这事儿还挺带劲的。

All of a sudden, was looking forward to it as something pleasurable.

Speaker 0

我学了很多东西,比如分部训练、冲击法、突破疼痛极限——全都是为了实际效果。

I learned about things like the split routine, the shock method, breaking through the pain barrier, all for practical reasons.

Speaker 0

我就想让肌肉更大、更强。

I wanted bigger, better muscles.

Speaker 0

这些都不是从其他健美选手那儿学来的。

None of this came from other bodybuilders.

Speaker 0

全是我自己想出来的,专为我的身体量身打造的原创方法。

They were all my own ideas, completely original methods designed by me for my body.

Speaker 0

然后他又回到训练心态上,强调专注和集中注意力的重要性。

And then he goes back to training his mind, the importance of concentration and focus.

Speaker 0

这一点他重复的次数,远远超过其他任何内容。

This is the thing he repeats by far the the most times.

Speaker 0

关键是我越来越了解大脑,了解它对身体的掌控力。

The point is I was learning more and more about the mind, about the power it has over the body.

Speaker 0

他谈到了自己的竞争对手。

He talks about his competitors.

Speaker 0

他们心理上没准备好应对高强度的冠军训练。

They weren't mentally prepared for intensive championship training.

Speaker 0

他们根本没往这上面想。

They weren't thinking about it.

Speaker 0

我知道其中的秘密。

I knew the secret.

Speaker 0

训练的时候,全神贯注。

Concentrate while you're training.

Speaker 0

别让别的念头钻进脑子里。

Do not allow other thoughts to enter your mind.

Speaker 0

每次去健身房,我都会把脑子里所有杂念清空。

When I went to the gym, I got rid of every alien thought in my mind.

Speaker 0

我知道,要是进健身房还想着账单、女生,或者被其他杂念分心,那进步肯定微乎其微。

I knew that if I went in and I was concerned about bills or girls or let myself think about any other any other thing, I'd only make marginal progress.

Speaker 0

就是从那时起,我开始认真研究:当心态专注时,身体到底会发生什么变化,积极心态有多关键。

It was then that I started seriously analyzing what happens to the body when the mind is tuned in, how important a positive attitude is.

Speaker 0

我开始仔细观察自己和其他健美选手之间的差别。

I began looking at the difference between me and other bodybuilders.

Speaker 0

最大的区别就是,大多数健美选手根本不会想‘我一定能赢’。

The biggest difference was that most bodybuilders did not think I'm going to be a winner.

Speaker 0

他们从来不敢这么去想。

They never allowed themselves to think in those terms.

Speaker 0

我常听见他们在训练时抱怨。

I would hear them complaining while they were training.

Speaker 0

天哪。

Oh, no.

Speaker 0

别再来了,又一组。

Not another set.

Speaker 0

我观察到的大多数人之所以进步缓慢,是因为他们从不相信自己。

Most of the people I observed couldn't make astonishing advances because they never had faith in themselves.

Speaker 0

他们心里有个模糊的目标,想有朝一日变成那样,但总觉得这事儿轮不到自己。

They had a hazy picture of what they wanted to look like someday, but they doubted they could realize it.

Speaker 0

这种心态彻底毁了他们。

That destroyed them.

Speaker 0

我一直觉得,如果你练功没有目标,那纯粹是在浪费力气。

It has always been my belief that if you're training for nothing, you're wasting your effort.

Speaker 0

他们最终没像我这么拼,是因为压根没觉得自己有戏。

Ultimately, they didn't put out the kind of effort I did because they didn't feel they had a chance to make it.

Speaker 0

既然打心底里觉得没希望,那当然也就成不了。

And, of course, starting with that premise, they didn't.

Speaker 0

关键在脑子里。

It is in the mind.

Speaker 0

得靠自己给自己打气。

You talk yourself into it.

Speaker 0

我不断告诉自己,我一定会成为最棒的。

You tell yourself you're going to be the best.

Speaker 0

1968年那会儿,真是拼了命。

The year 1968 was intense.

Speaker 0

我每天两次,每次一练就是两三个小时。

I worked out two and three hours at a stretch twice a day.

Speaker 0

我还报了商学院。

I enrolled in business school.

Speaker 0

只要不是在训练或者打理健身房,我就在教室里埋头学习。

If I wasn't training or taking care of the gym, I was in class studying.

Speaker 0

我简直贪得无厌。

I was insatiable.

Speaker 0

谁也拦不住我。

I was unstoppable.

Speaker 0

朋友们都直摇头。

My friends were shaking their heads.

Speaker 0

阿诺德,你疯了吧。

Arnold, you're crazy.

Speaker 0

你这样迟早把自己累垮。

You're going to burn yourself out.

Speaker 0

别这么拼了。

Slow down.

Speaker 0

我听了就笑,反而更卖力了。

I laughed at them and then pushed myself harder.

Speaker 0

他训练时特别注重心理,我觉得特别关键的一点是,他真的全神贯注,完全活在当下。

And one of the things about him training the mind that I think is really important is his again, he's just, like, focused on he's completely present.

Speaker 0

他就沉浸在那一刻,也意识到其他对手和队友根本做不到这点。

He's in the moment, and he realized that his other competitors and his peers could not do that.

Speaker 0

他举了个例子。

So he gives an example.

Speaker 0

有个和他一起训练的人说:‘真希望这五组别练了。’

One of the people he's training with says, I wish we didn't have five more sets to do.

Speaker 0

阿诺德的回答是:我们现在就剩这一组了,干就完了。

And Arnold's reply is, we just have the one rep that we're on, so do it.

Speaker 0

健美界的圣地,就在加州威尼斯。

And so the Mecca of bodybuilding is happening in Venice, California.

Speaker 0

所以阿诺德自然就去了那儿。

So, of course, Arnold gets there.

Speaker 0

他继续参加比赛。

He continues to compete.

Speaker 0

到了美国后,他遇见了一个对他来说特别重要的女孩。

When he gets to America, he actually decides that he he meets this girl that's really special to him.

Speaker 0

他以前说过,自己只是把女人当发泄工具,这话他讲得特别坦诚。

Before he said he'd essentially just used women for sex, he's very open and honest.

Speaker 0

书里他好多地方都提到这事。

He talks a lot about that in the book.

Speaker 0

但他对一个叫芭芭拉的女生,真的动了真情。

But he had deep feelings for this woman named Barbara.

Speaker 0

她后来写了一本书,我很多年之后才读到。

She actually writes this book that I read much many years later.

Speaker 0

我觉得应该是《创始人》播客的第309期。

I think it's, like, episode, like, three zero nine of Founders.

Speaker 0

我给那期起的名字大概是‘成功之前的阿诺德’,讲的是他21到26岁之间的那段日子。

I think I titled the episode something like Arnold before he was successful because it's all about how he was between the age of, like, 21 and 26.

Speaker 0

读她对那时的阿诺德的描述,我又一次意识到,他后来所有的成就,在当时都还遥不可及。

And I think reading her description of him at this time, again, like, all his success, the vast majority of his success is just decades into the future.

Speaker 0

我来念几段书里的原话,之后他本人也在书里提到过她。

So let me just read a couple quotes from that book, and then I'll I'll he talks about her in this book too.

Speaker 0

她说阿诺德这个人从不让人意外。

But she says Arnold was not a man of many surprises.

Speaker 0

他目标明确,决策坚定,不惜一切代价以自我为中心。

He was clear in his focus, firm in his decisions, and egocentric at all costs.

Speaker 0

没人能压得住他那股叛逆的劲头。

No one could restrain his mutinous energy.

Speaker 0

这人特别擅长规划实现伟大目标所需的每一步行动。

This man was masterful in plotting the necessary actions to carry out his great feats.

Speaker 0

他几乎满足了所有竞争和金钱上的欲望。

He fulfilled almost every competitive and financial craving.

Speaker 0

他是我见过最有目标感的人。

He was the most goal oriented man I had ever met.

Speaker 0

他总爱去找那些脑子有料的人打交道。

He always sought out those with brains worth examining.

Speaker 0

他的聪明劲儿不在成绩单上,但实现目标就像施了魔法一样。

His intelligence did not show on report cards, yet he mastered his goals like a wizard.

Speaker 0

所以,阿诺德就是这样描述这段六年关系的结束的。

And so this is how Arnold describes the end of this six year relationship.

Speaker 0

我们的关系里渐渐出现了矛盾。

A conflict grew in our relationship.

Speaker 0

她是个心态平衡、想过普通日子的女人,而我根本不是个平衡的人,还特别讨厌‘普通生活’这四个字。

She was a well balanced woman who wanted an ordinary life, and I was not a well balanced man and hated the very idea of ordinary life.

Speaker 0

她以为我会安定下来,等在事业上登顶后就歇一歇。

She thought I would settle down, that I would reach the top in my field, and then level off.

Speaker 0

但这种想法根本跟我没关系。

But that's a concept that has no place in my thinking.

Speaker 0

对我来说,人生就是永远饿着肚子。

For me, life is continuously being hungry.

Speaker 0

活着的意义不是光撑着过日子,而是要往前冲、往上爬、去实现、去征服。

The meaning of life is not simply to exist, to survive, but to move ahead, to go up, to achieve, to conquer.

Speaker 0

我想成长。

I wanted to grow.

Speaker 0

我想继续前进。

I wanted to go on.

Speaker 0

她想要的那种生活容不下我,所以我就跟她分了。

The life she wanted wouldn't permit that, and so he breaks up with her.

Speaker 0

所以她当时说的那句话——阿诺德二十出头的时候,是我见过最有目标感的人。

And so that observation that his girlfriend had that, you know, Arnold in his early twenties is the most goal oriented man I ever met.

Speaker 0

他提到过这一点。

He talks about this.

Speaker 0

他说:我总是把目标写下来。

He goes, I always wrote down my goals.

Speaker 0

我得写得特别具体,不然那些美好的愿望就只是空想。

I had to make it very specific so all those fine intentions were not just floating around.

Speaker 0

也许有人觉得定这么细的目标是在束缚自己,其实恰恰相反。

It might seem like I was handcuffing myself by setting such specific goals, but it was the opposite.

Speaker 0

我觉得特别自由。

I found it liberating.

Speaker 0

清楚知道自己要去哪儿,反而让我能放开手脚,灵活应对路怎么走。

Knowing exactly where I wanted to end up freed me totally to improvise how to get there.

Speaker 0

没有任何事能让我偏离目标。

Nothing was going to distract me from my goal.

Speaker 0

任何提议都不行。

No offer.

Speaker 0

跟这没关系。

No relationship.

Speaker 0

啥都没有。

Nothing.

Speaker 0

我决定,要真正独立,最好的办法就是管好自己的事,自己挣钱。

I decided that the best course for independence was to mind my own business and make my own money.

Speaker 0

在我看来,这正是阿诺德的聪明之处——他意识到,那些让他成功的理念,其实能用在任何事情上。这本书就是这么收尾的。

And to me, that's a simple genius of Arnold, just realizing that these principles that he learned and that he succeeded with could be applied to anything, and that is how the book ends.

Speaker 0

就像我练身材那样,我也想打造一个属于自己的帝国。

Working in the same way I had to build my body, I wanted to create an empire.

Speaker 0

因为我有商业背景,也懂实际的运营,我觉得自己完全有能力去干自己的事业。

Because of my business education and the practical aspects of the business that I had learned, I felt that I was equipped to go ahead with my own enterprises.

Speaker 0

我推出了一系列邮购培训课程,帮助了全球成千上万的健美爱好者。

I established a series of mail order training courses, which enabled me to help educate thousands of bodybuilders all over the world.

Speaker 0

我卖照片集、T恤、健美短裤,还有定制化的训练方案。

I sold photo albums, t shirts, posing trunks, personalized programs.

Speaker 0

我跑遍了全世界办训练营,日本、澳大利亚、南非、荷兰、比利时、德国、奥地利、意大利、法国、芬兰、西班牙、加拿大、墨西哥,还有美国。

I worked out seminars all over the world, Japan, Australia, South Africa, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Finland, Spain, Canada, Mexico, The United States.

Speaker 0

我开始在美国推广健美比赛。

I began promoting bodybuilding competitions in America.

Speaker 0

为了保持知名度,让名气越来越大,我一直坚持捍卫自己的头衔。

In order to keep up my name and make it grow, I continued to defend my titles.

Speaker 0

我希望能做到,每一个拿起哑铃的人,一碰到器械,脑子里立刻想到的就是我——阿诺德。

Eventually, I wanted every single person who touched a weight to equate the feeling of the barbell with my name.

Speaker 0

他一抓起杠铃,我就希望他马上想到:阿诺德。

The moment he got ahold of it, I wanted him to think, Arnold.

Speaker 0

我觉得通过健美,我真正培养起来的,是性格、自信和人格。

I think the most important things I developed through bodybuilding were my personality, confidence, and character.

Speaker 0

小时候,我也跟所有孩子一样,特别没安全感。

When I was young, I suffered from the same insecurity every kid has.

Speaker 0

但当我一步步把自己变成一个强大又独特的人,发现自己真能做成一件事时,自信就自然而然来了,那种踏实感,让我特别有底气。

But as I transformed myself into something strong and unique, discovering I could do one thing well, confidence came to me naturally, and that gave me a great deal of security.

Speaker 0

我慢慢明白,几乎所有难的事、所有的挑战,都需要时间、耐心和拼命努力,就像慢慢练到能卧推三百磅一样。

I've come to realize that almost anything difficult, any challenge takes time, patience, and hard work, like building up for a 300 pound bench press.

Speaker 0

学会这一点,给我后来注入了源源不断的正能量。

Learning that gave me plenty of positive energy to use later on.

Speaker 0

我自学了自律。

I taught myself discipline.

Speaker 0

这种自律,我能用到生活的方方面面。

I could apply that discipline to everyday life.

Speaker 0

演戏、上学,我都靠它撑着。

I use it in acting, in going to school.

Speaker 0

别忘了,他演戏的第一个大机会,可是后来才来的——那时候他已经是片酬最高的演员了。

And keep in mind, in acting, his first big break in acting remember, he he winds up becoming the highest paid actor in his field at one time.

Speaker 0

但他写下这些话的时候,离那个转机还得再等五年。

But his first big break doesn't happen for another half a decade after he's writing these words.

Speaker 0

演戏、上学,我都靠它撑着。

I used it in acting and going to school.

Speaker 0

每当我懒得学习时,就会想起当健美先生得付出多少努力和牺牲。

Whenever I didn't wanna study, I would just think back and remember what it took to be mister universe.

Speaker 0

一想到那些汗水和坚持,我就立刻埋头学起来。

The sacrifice, the hard work, and I would plunge myself into studying.

Speaker 0

我把这种成功经验用在了所有事情上。

I can apply my success to everything.

Speaker 0

现在演戏,我下定决心要像练小腿那样拼命去掉口音。

With acting, now I am determined to work as hard on removing my accent as I was on improving my poor calves.

Speaker 0

做生意也是同样的道理。

The same with business.

Speaker 0

我非赚上几百万不可,根本没得选。

I'm so determined to make millions of dollars that I cannot fail.

Speaker 0

在我心里,钱早就赚到了。

In my mind, I've already made the millions.

Speaker 0

现在就差按部就班地走完流程了。

Now it's just a matter of going through the motions.
