In episode four, I want to talk about discipline and patience.

Speaker 0

We've set goals, we've got a bankroll, we've decided where we're gonna do what we're gonna do, but the fundamental two fundamentals really in sports betting trading any form of betting and trading, I guess is To succeed we've got to have discipline.

Speaker 0

It's a kind of all encompassing word discipline and patience and the people who are successful have this discipline in sort of inverted commas, and it enables them to manage themselves, which I think is one of the key words, stick to your strategies, manage your bank role, avoid impulsive emotional decisions.

Speaker 0

All this stuff comes under discipline.

Speaker 0

Successful, those were successful, we developed sets of rules and guide lines for our betting trading strategies, and then stick and execute those rules consistently.

Speaker 0

And don't let what's happening when we talk about variants and things like that distract and get carried away on emotion or outside influence that enable us to deviate from that plan.

Speaker 0

And that whole thing becomes part of a process which helps you minimize your losses and increase your profit.

Speaker 0

So a really good example of one I've seen recently is if you are pre race trading, and on FTS we have a pre race trading course with Williamson.

Speaker 0

Steve really disciplined, dedicated to what he does.

Speaker 0

And Steve had one golden rule.

Speaker 0

So at the start of his course, he's got one golden rule.

Speaker 0

You are trading pre race.

Speaker 0

The key is in the title.

Speaker 0

Pre race, do not go in So you just close your position, be it green or red, before that race starts and you know where you are.

Speaker 0

And that way, if you are red, you're controlling your losses.

Speaker 0

The minute that race goes in play, you're trying to hope it gets to a price that you can get out, that's when it goes wrong and losses become much bigger and it's what something that in just in that short time that we've been running the pre race trading, Steve's done it as long as I've known him, ten, fifteen years full time, never lets races go and play, and just in the short time he's been dealing with people, Oh, I let a race go and play, I let a race go and play.

Speaker 0

And it is exactly those sort of things because it leads to one big loss, which then affects the mindset, which then alters the plan, and that's when the whole thing unravels.

Speaker 0

So it's an all encompassing word, but you've got to have that discipline to stick to what you're doing.

Speaker 0

You've sat down, you've set your goals, you've got your bankroll, you've decided on what you want to do, and at some point you've got to take a leap into it.

Speaker 0

It's a bit of a step into the unknown betting trading.

Speaker 0

We can do as much data crunching and things as we like.

Speaker 0

It is still that sort of because there's a lack of dead certainty, you've got to take a sort of bit of a leap of faith, a bit of a trust in what you've done, trust in unknown, trust yourself and your research that you've figured it out, but then if you don't execute it and stick to it and have the discipline to not get derailed, and that's when it becomes So all that sort of stuff, if I do two months, I've lost a couple of months, I'm packing up, that's just a lack of discipline.

Speaker 0

All that, I've got a bankroll of a 100 points, I've lost 50, I'm giving up, that again is a lack of discipline, lack of discipline, lack of patience, because you have to let these things play out, and that's what it is.

Speaker 0

Staking comes down to discipline.

Speaker 0

It's, know, your bankroll management, you need to have a set amount of money that you are willing to risk on each bet, and you should stick to it regardless of of the outcome of any previous bets.

Speaker 0

This is what helps protect your bankroll, prevents you from making impulsive decisions that then lead to the significant losses.

Speaker 0

One of my things with people that I've worked with is their losses become so big in relation to their wins that it's never in sync and becomes harder.

Speaker 0

So you've got to understand those strike rates and what you're doing, but but you can't have, oh, I've lost four bets.

Speaker 0

I'm gonna have, you know, four times my stake on this one because I feel like it, and if it wins, I'll get all my money back, that sort of thing.

Speaker 0

So if you've got those clear goals, and we've talked about selling goals, the next phase really is to write out a trading plan.

Speaker 0

So you've got a trading plan of what you're gonna do, what are your rules and guidelines for that day's trading, and then stick to it consistently.

Speaker 0

You develop a routine.

Speaker 0

I've been asked recently about my time management, what do I do?

Speaker 0

So I'm just gonna while we're in this, I'm gonna talk a little bit about it.

Speaker 0

I do the same thing every single day.

Speaker 0

So in my FTS website life, we have a structure that it runs.

Speaker 0

I have a meeting once a week with Alastair.

Speaker 0

I have a meeting once a week with Dave.

Speaker 0

I have a meeting once a week with Kerry, all dealing with three with different aspects.

Speaker 0

Allister is all on data, any issues we may have, things we need to develop, where sheets have got to go, what's got to go on those sheets.

Speaker 0

Dave, it's about how can we set the website up better for the members and get everything moving as simply as possible, and Kerry is to go through emails and things that I need to address, you know, that have come in over that week.

Speaker 0

So that's my sort of fundamental work structure, and those meetings are in there.

Speaker 0

I use you know, Apple calendar.

Speaker 0

So I just have those meetings repeating, and they repeat every you know, if I look in 2027, there'll be a meeting in Thursday for Alastair.

Speaker 0

We do it every week unless there's absolutely nothing to do, and then we'll say actually we don't need to do anything this week, but they're in there.

Speaker 0

So that's my sort of working life, and then I work around that doing the bits, I tend to do Thursdays.

Speaker 0

I'll do my Zooms because that's Aquinas football day.

Speaker 0

But football wise, I get up and do the same thing.

Speaker 0

I have to this day, I've got I use a reminders app in my phone, and I have reminders, and they come up every morning of basically a checklist of things I've got to do.

Speaker 0

And I start with my own football, so I start going through that, what have I got to do, and it will be obviously go and get the sheets, import sheets into my tools, run my tools, basically build my shortlist, who do I need to share information with, so I need to put some stuff over here for the trading group, I've got some some people I mentor a bit more, so I need to give that to them.

Speaker 0

So I build that all up and work through that list.

Speaker 0

I've got to update results from that on that sheet when the sheets come out at 10:30.

Speaker 0

So I just follow down that checklist every single day.

Speaker 0

From that, as part of that checklist, I build my own trading shortlist of that's what I'm gonna do today, and that's where I need to be.

Speaker 0

And I repeat that religiously.

Speaker 0

I've said many times, boring, I don't do anything different, but it is a discipline to do it, there's days when you get up and don't feel like doing it, without a doubt, but it's a discipline just to get up and do it, that's what that becomes, and I think that if people could get, you know, sounds boring, but getting routine, you get a routine, you don't get out of it, it just becomes like autopilot, so my days become autopilot.

Speaker 0

Admittedly, by the time you get to June, you're quite happy to have a, because it's quieter, a wind down, but I still do it every single day, so even through June, July, August, every single day I run that routine, oh, there's no games today, I don't need to do, you know, aspects four, five, six, seven, whatever it may be.

Speaker 0

But I think it's building that up, and that tells me, right, I need to trade then, can I trade then, that's my time available, whatever it may be?

Speaker 0

It's a discipline to do it, the same thing every single day without fail.

Speaker 0

Slight changes to my routine on a Tuesday and Friday because we've got more football for the weekend running ultimate and things, but they just go into a checklist and reminders pop up, have you done this here and have you done that?

Speaker 0

And I just tick through them every single day.

Speaker 0

I know what they are off by heart, but I still go through that process and tick them off because that way I know I'm not gonna miss anything and it just every time I do it, it's cemented, cemented, cemented, and if I change something, oh, that's new.

Speaker 0

I don't do that normally.

Speaker 0

I've got new tools now.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

I need to update that one.

Speaker 0

Bang.

Speaker 0

Put it in.

Speaker 0

Do it.

Speaker 0

But it all comes with, you know, developing that routine.

Speaker 0

That that if you've got that routine, you've got that plan, it stops the emotional decisions.

Speaker 0

It stops betting trading on a whim or chasing losses, and enables me to focus on my long term goals of my own betting trading and where I want to get people to.

Speaker 0

I can channel my time into that better by having that routine and that sort of discipline behind me.

Speaker 0

It does take time and effort into putting into practice, analyzing obviously the relevant information, but once you've got that routine, it means I'm making informed decisions based on data, statistics, than relying on hunches or or intuitions of people sort of saying, I think there'll be goals in this game.

Speaker 0

It doesn't mean anything.

Speaker 0

It doesn't mean that what if there is goals in this game?

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

Can I win it if I bet it at that price?

Speaker 0

I've no idea.

Speaker 0

You've got to have that discipline to do it.

Speaker 0

And and I think that's where I see, again, lots of people fail.

Speaker 0

It's it's it's the consistency of executing and doing something, and the sort of going back to expectations, thinking you can do this overnight.

Speaker 0

You know, one of my great analogies is you wouldn't become a surgeon overnight, so why do you think you can become a sports better trader overnight?

Speaker 0

You've got to get yourself a little bit out of that comfort zone, and you've got to set yourself up with all the elements, really before you go to put a bet, and then when you come to put in the bet on, it is that discipline of doing the same things and patience.

Speaker 0

Patience is having a long term perspective.

Speaker 0

It is as simple as that.

Speaker 0

It means understanding that to make sustainable profits is only achievable by sticking to your plan and sticking through the period, and staying focused on your goals, avoiding quick chasing wins, avoiding giving up.

Speaker 0

It is absolutely crucial to have patience through losing streaks as they are inevitable in any part of sports betting.

Speaker 0

As I say, I'll tell you if anybody says they're not doing any, they're not losing, they're lying.

Speaker 0

It's not getting discouraged by those short term setbacks and maintaining confidence in your strategies.

Speaker 0

That, you know, we'll talk about strategy building.

Speaker 0

That's, it all goes together.

Speaker 0

But basically what we're trying to bring is loads of elements together.

Speaker 0

And we need the discipline of patience to let them execute them and let them play out.

Speaker 0

And allowing that to play out or normalize your results over time, normalize your income over time.

Speaker 0

And it will hopefully then lead to a sort of cease and desist of the temptation to make impulsive changes.

Speaker 0

I think if you can learn patience, it'll help you control your emotions, prevent impulsive decisions driven by frustration, excitement, fear of losing, whatever it may be, and you'll start to make more logical decisions based on analysis and logic, rather than being swayed by these temporary emotions.

Speaker 0

And I know it's difficult, know, one of my things, get people stick to one hundred days, I try and get them to stay on path, and then they might see that I post over 1.5 bets somewhere, they, oh, I'll do that.

Speaker 0

It's not for you.

Speaker 0

It's not for them.

Speaker 0

There are people who will never ever sit down and put their time into this, but may like a football trade now and then, and and I go, right.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

Well, there's one at your own peril.

Speaker 0

If you wish to do it, do it.

Speaker 0

If you're on another plan and that's what you're sticking to, then stick to it.

Speaker 0

You don't need to come and get involved in that other stuff, but that all becomes part of it, all part of that plan.

Speaker 0

I get sent and told loads of stuff, particularly horses, or have I seen this, have I tried this, it's not part of what I do, so most of it I don't even look at.

Speaker 0

I might go and have a curiosity read, just because like to see how other people do things, but I've got no intention of ever implementing it, and I just think you've got to have the discipline to set yourself up.

Speaker 0

What is it you want to achieve for you, we're all different, What is your discipline and patience like now?

Speaker 0

And in effect, it is a learned skill.

Speaker 0

It's a skill that you can develop and work on.

Speaker 0

And the easiest way is to put a routine in place, so that it just becomes normal.

Speaker 0

I talk about golf, we've just watched a fantastic performance by Brian Harman winning The Open, and he has said, in every interview since he's been asked, stuck to my process, I doubled down on my process.

Speaker 0

So in the absolute heat of battle positions he'd not been in before, all the outside pressure, local favorites breathing down his neck, he just stuck to process and executed that process with discipline, being patient, and it enabled him to succeed, and it was a great example, this game is exactly the same.

Speaker 0

If you get a process down, you stick to that process and don't get veered off it, you're aiming to clear goals, it'll help you, obviously you've set your bank up, you've got your money management, it'll help you with that, don't get distracted and you will get there without a doubt, I genuinely believe that.

Speaker 0

So you've got to kind of take that leap of faith into your own abilities.

Speaker 0

I think there's far too much in gambling of people looking to others for the answers.

Speaker 0

Look inside yourself, get yourself set up.

Speaker 0

What are the mistakes you make now, particularly in regards to discipline and patience, and let's deal with them, and without doubt I'm sure that you will proceed to be much better going forward.
