Effectively it's resilience, are we developing physical and mental resilience in our athletes to get to that point and be able to compete?
And if we're not, then we're missing something.
If we are, we're doing something right.
But I think that has something to do, to be honest with the environment as well.
Like if there's a lot of talk in tennis around Europe, what they're doing in Europe.
And I guess like, not that I've experienced, but my impression is it's like almost dog eat dog.
Like it's so cutthroat and everyone's just willing to drive like the absolute extreme because if you're not, you've almost got no chance.
Welcome to another episode of Going Pro Podcast.
And today we have a special guest, Andrew Furner who is with us today.
He is the physical performance coach in Tennis with Tennis Australia currently.
He has a diverse and broad background over fifteen years in this area.
He's grew up in fitness industry, your mom, your dad, you've owned gyms together, you've been, you've like developed fitness equipment, which we're going to dive into.
So you could say that it's just been in your blood really.
This has moved into starting fast twitch, which I'm super keen to talk about because growing up that was a massive revelation for Adelaide in terms of just like innovation, bringing a completely new concept and just taking strength and conditioning and performance to a new level here, which we hadn't seen.
So super keen to talk about that.
You've completed a Master's in Sports Management and MBA in Entrepreneurship.
You have a passion for pursuing high performance for yourself and others, you tap into multiple disciplines so that you can look at situations from a number of different perspectives.
And I think that's just a sign of a good coach, someone that can look at things from a number of different perspectives and then utilize the right approach depending on who's in front of you.
So welcome Andrew, thanks for being here with us, we really appreciate it.
Thank you, mate.
Good to be here.
当然。
Absolutely.
So I'm just itching to get into the Fast Twitch journey.
So I guess for a lot of people who maybe never heard of Fast Twitch, like can you paint a little bit of a picture of how that started and what that was like in the initial phases building up and then actually just getting it started?
How did that look and how that all eventuate?
Yeah, for sure.
So we began in 2009, but I guess like any business journey, actually start years before it actually comes to fruition.
So it does crossover into having my parents into or involved in the fitness industry and being involved in that and seeing what they did when I was young.
Then, obviously, you turn 20 and you in your mid twenties, and you're like, well, you know, I guess I can have a crack at something I'm reasonably good at.
And, you know, you so as you put yourself out there on the line and you have a go.
And, yeah, it was definitely one hell of a ride.
Can say that, but a good one and a lot of good experiences along the way.
当然。
For sure.
So your dad was part of building this fitness equipment that was patent from him.
It was new equipment for the time.
Can you explain a little bit about what made FastSwitch different based on this equipment that you had there?
Yeah, for sure.
So the equipment had evolved and was innovated over a long period of time.
It got to the point where we felt like we had this really cool product and it was innovative and athletes could benefit from using it.
But how do we get it in their hands?
And that's probably what's born the fast twitch concept.
And so it was almost like the integration of being able to use this equipment, but also then bringing performance training to Adelaide where you could go to a facility and if you played at your local football club, you could come in and experience what performance training is all about.
Yeah, for sure.
But I guess what was unique in at that time, we're going back to 2009 is nothing really like that existed, particularly in Adelaide, I'm sure there was other place.
Well, I know in The US there were places around, but it was probably pretty out there in AustraliaAdelaide at the time.
Yeah, sure.
So can you explain what this equipment actually was though?
Like it was a hydraulic pump.
Did it actually work?
And then it gave you feedback.
Can you explain that a little bit more?
Yeah, for sure.
I guess you can classify equipment into different categories, but this was what's called ice kinetic training and probably more pseudo ice kinetics rather than the pure for those technical wizards out there.
Yeah, the hydraulic technology effectively controls the speed you can move.
If you try and push faster, it's going to create more resistance.
So that's a unique way of utilizing resistance training.
And I guess for youngsters looking to, I suppose, get an edge in their performance, it's a really safe way of doing it.
Yeah, that's
exactly the first thing that came to my mind is just protection of the joints, not loading the joints in, I guess a really damaging way.
These machines would have made it really safe to actually output a lot of force and feel like you're gonna be okay while doing that while getting measurable results that you can test on and see through the computer system.
And then from there you can actually track over the course of like, I guess maybe like eight week period or like over a couple of months and see how much progress you're making, which would have been awesome.
Like it would have been great for people coming in to actually see how they were evolving in that time without putting too much pressure on their joints.
And because you're getting feedback on every repetition that you're doing.
So you literally will do a set of 10, for example, and you can see each rep as you're going, but then equally look back at the set and see how you perform.
Like you're saying, you could, or you're doing that set by set and then session by session, it became really good training feedback tool to identify where maybe some weaknesses were in your, I suppose, strength power profile.
That would have been really insightful.
And then you would have, I guess broken that down with the people that you're working with and explained it to them and saying, okay, maybe your is not your right hip is not working that well here and you need to push through your foot a little bit more and you could have maybe gone into more details.
Was it consultative like that in any way?
Yeah, 100%.
And I mean, of the key principles in sports performance is specificity.
So speed is a really large or big component of that because sport, the higher you go in sport, like the faster it becomes, it doesn't really matter what sport it is unless I'm doing archery or something like
that.
长传。
Long balls.
But yeah, you're doing tennis football, soccer, whatever like, it gets faster as you get older.
So we need to keep that in mind when we're training people, but the process in getting them there is you need to build foundations.
And I guess like it's hard to train speed with quality.
And so again, the equipment like enabled you to do it to some extent and then profile like you're saying.
So you could profile where someone's power curve was essentially and kind of identify if they needed more speed or if they need a bit more strength in their training.
And that was pretty cool.
Yeah, that's sick.
Then you can actually target a program more clearly for someone.
没错。
That's right.
That's amazing.
Yeah, I rate that.
I'm curious to know more about the structure of the business.
Did you have group classes?
Were there different sort of disciplines that you had in the gym?
Was it just these iso kinetic machines?
Fast Twitch
What was the structure at Fast Twitch?
是的,
Yeah,
对。
yeah.
And the schedule, what it looked like in a week?
Yeah, that's a great question because when you first begin, you've got a pretty good idea on what you wanna do, but when you bring it to the market, you're getting feedback all the time.
So where we began and where we ended were like kind of two different spots.
As far as providing like a service to your market, we were definitely orientated around the Ask and Eddy equipment to begin with.
We did a lot of group training around that.
And to be honest, what we found, it was such a hardcore way of training that people would get some lactic buildup in their body and start feeling nauseous and this type of thing.
I guess, and this is a really important concept in the athletic world is when should you really push those limits and managing someone's load and these types of things quite important.
I suppose being a bit greener back in those days, we're pushing people pretty hard, which was cool and they were getting good results, but then we sort of like evolved and started introducing a lot of the other training modalities that you do in performance training.
Yeah, so what sort of things was that?
Were there like yoga involved or any other kind of like mobility classes?
What sort of things did you have?
Yeah, so we basically created a weekly schedule and I guess we were targeting like an adolescent athlete across multiple sports, we were doing strength classes or strength power classes and then some ice kinetic classes separately.
And then like you're saying like recovery yoga, which we kind of put into one bucket.
You would sort of take yoga moves and get your foam rollers or good mobility moves and put into that bucket and try and drive some recovery.
Yeah, that's cool.
I'm just thinking back 2009, that would have been quite cool for the time.
So like bringing it to now, how would you do it differently?
Because there's been so much involvement in that space in terms of strengthening,
Yeah, mean, one of the unique parts of the journey, which we experienced as suppose, the founders of the business is we were working really hard.
As you do, when you start your own business, you're putting in like countless number of hours.
I think like looking back now, like, you learn from your mistakes, but you would shortcut a few things knowing in hindsight, how to do things better.
For me now, the athlete, I guess profiling the athlete is kind of front and center because with a profile, you can always have targets and you need to have something to aim for as a coach and equally as an athlete.
I think, I say it all the time with the kids I train or the athletes I train, like once you give them a target, they're gonna strive much harder and kind of their heels in so to speak and get better outcomes.
So I think it's the onus is on the coach to kinda lead that path.
But yeah, think that's something we definitely do from the beginning.
Then More like a bit more sorry about him, but a bit more of like a consultation to really figure out what are they trying to aim for?
Where are they going with whatever sport discipline they're doing?
So then
you can actually target things a little bit more clearly with them and you guys.
I think, yeah, that's right.
Like sometimes if you ask an athlete, well, what do they want?
What are their goals?
They're gonna tell you what they know, but they don't know what we know.
So I think, yeah, it's good to listen to them and get some feedback, but equally, we wanna drive that process for their betterment.
And it's an interesting dynamic because you've got the athlete often the parent and the coach, and then you've got the SNC coach involved in making those decisions and not everyone sees the eye to eye.
Guess if you're looking at it through my lens, when you get good buy from the physical development point of view, and there's not many barriers with whether it be the coach or the parent or the athlete, you get really good outcomes.
You kind of want to understand the landscape to begin with as well.
是的。
Yeah.
But there's some really good examples that I saw, Craig Goodwin is a really good one that sticks out in my mind where he was just prepared to work.
That's amazing.
Look at him now, that would have built a base for him early days.
没错。
Absolutely.
To get to where he's at now.
对。
That's right.
Fantastic.
And if I, we had a number of AFL boys come through who were looking to get drafted and then got picked up and I guess the general rule across those players who pushed to that next level is they've always got this desire and drive to get there.
So they're much driving their own process as opposed to being forced to the order.
Yeah, they're the sort of people you wanna work with, they're the sort of clients you wanna have.
When you have that, it's just the process is just extremely enjoyable, Very easy and you're motivated to really get stuck in.
Not that there's anything wrong with having to really drive it, but like, I don't necessarily wanna be a personal trainer just like barking at someone telling someone to move and do this.
Like I want it to be collaborative and I'll do my part and it's nice when the other person does their part and we can really work towards something special together.
没错。
That's right.
I'm having the conversation at the moment is, what would a pro be like at a junior level when like Lay knew it comes to mind because his SA born and bred, he would be frothing at the mouth, just like trying to eat up anything he could get.
是的。
Yes.
So I wasn't there to say that, but I would imagine.
That's what it would
have From all the stories I've heard from people that were around him at that time, it's always the same thing, just absolute dedication and hard work to that process day Yeah, in, day
没错。
that's right.
And so it's a challenge, particularly with this generation to some extent because they're contending with other different forces than what I contended with when I was their age.
I think there's a lot of room and we need to be paying attention to that as coaches and just the influence of technology and where their mindset is and their ability to concentrate and focus and really like anything, delve into the work and be willing to go through that process and come out the other side.
Yeah, spot on.
Because I feel like you're a little bit older than me, but I felt like when I was growing up, still had those more traditional values instilled just about like hard work.
I had technology come in as I was growing up.
So I wasn't really as affected by it.
We still went outside, we still play, we still made up our own games.
We weren't as affected by social media and those social forces as much.
So I feel like I got the best of both worlds in a way.
I feel like we've lost a bit of that, those traditional values to really work hard and go through the process and realize that things don't come easy and you have to be patient with it and you have to repeat the process over and over again, day after day, over the course of months, years to really get towards somewhere that you wanna get to.
Because we're so used to having everything at our fingertips right now.
And when that doesn't work, it's like, oh my God, why is this not working?
I just want it to happen now.
It's like, no, it takes some time.
So my question is, do you feel we need to go a little bit more traditional old school, bit more like kind of hard work to teach kids to be more resilient?
Where's the balance at there?
Cause we don't wanna go too far away to just like, yelling at kids all the time.
But do we need to go a little bit more that way?
It's my back to the old school.
Yes and no, it's definitely shades of gray and I think it probably depends partly on who you're working with.
There's definitely like a model, like I've got in my mind where I know like to transition and they call it a transition from basically junior competition to elite adult competition.
That's a big jump.
If we're preparing athletes, are we preparing them for that jump?
And I think the only way to prepare them is physically and psychologically.
So they become resilient and one of the terminologies we use in our world is resilient unbreakable.
So I think if they're entering that stage of their sport and they're looking to push into that environment at the top level, are they gonna withstand the rigors?
Let's not forget that it's not just the physical or the skill, there's a whole psychological battle going on as well.
Like, do I belong there?
When I get there, am I gonna like compete for my spot or am I gonna stand my ground?
This plays out, right?
So I think that's really where a bit of the old school mentality fits because it's somewhat of the survival of the fitter still.
I think if you're sheltering kids in the development environment from that, you're probably doing them disservice later down the track.
What does that psychological training look like to you?
How do we actually train kids to work on the psychological side?
Because that's the side that I see.
We need the most work on it.
So a lot of kids are struggling with that side at the moment from my observations.
Yeah, intrinsic motivation, which means motivation from within, I think is a key feature of it.
And I guess that just goes back to Hewitt example is he was like dry.
Yes, there was other influences behind what he was doing, but ultimately if he wasn't driving where he wanted to go, like it would have crumbled down in my opinion.
It comes back to knowing your why.
Like if you have your purpose in your why as to why you're enduring some hard things and I think it can get you through those moments.
那是
That's
对的。
right.
When it is a little bit darker.
是的。
Yeah.
And so there's this concept of deliberate practice where if you talk about a younger athlete, pre adolescents, you actually want quite a broad base of stimulus or exposure to different activities.
I think tennis is interesting because they talk about early exposure and then you're almost getting a bit of a broad base of skills, but you actually kind of need to kind of like narrow into it pretty quickly as well.
So you've got like what they call early specialization sports and late specialization.
So athletics, for example, is a late specialization, not becoming like top level until you're probably mid 20s.
Whereas tennis, like that happens a little bit earlier.
And again, another example is gymnastics, that happens even earlier again.
So these dynamics are going on whether we realize it or not, it's a matter of, I guess, getting some understanding and I suppose some awareness and education out there around how or what they mean and then obviously what you do about it through different stages of your development.
So, but again, circling back to this deliberate practice concept, me, like what's front and center is feedback.
And I've always said like, you've got three types of athletes.
You've got the athlete who hates getting feedback.
Like we'll just give you nothing like roll his eyes, turn away, whatever.
Then the athletes sort of impartial in between and then there's the athlete who seeks that feedback.
And I think that's a good barometer around whether they're really into it and passionate and wanting to drive their performance to, I guess their end outcome.
So in saying all that, feedback to me is probably the most important concept from a mental point of view because if you're surrounding yourself with good people, you're going to get good feedback and that will be instrumental to taking it where you wanna go.
Yeah, for sure.
And then you're gonna be open to that feedback.
没错。
Yeah.
当然。
Absolutely.
One thing I wanted to talk about was you touched on intrinsic motivation and that coming from within, I think that's got to be probably one of the most important things to get the kindling of the fire going to start that internal fire, to start to believe that you can do things.
Do you think it's a skill that anyone can learn when you just practice self talk when you're on the tennis court and you really actually start to become aware of the inner dialogue you have because we all have this just negative feedback loop of thinking that just comes up that we can just get stuck in and then we kind of spiral and vortex down and then it's almost like impossible to get out of and then you've had a disaster session or disaster match.
So is it all about starting to really just be aware of the inner dialogue and just replacing that with the way you talk to yourself, pumping yourself up, actually motivating yourself to do something to get a different outcome.
Is that how you see it?
Yeah, I think like your performance gives you feedback.
And so I guess that, say you are talking negative to yourself, is that working for you?
And if it is like great, the performance should be judged on essentially results.
And so if it is or it isn't working, think that's where you start to assess where you're at with it.
But as far as, I suppose in my opinion, like I've often used the analogy of particularly in Tennis, I feel like often at times you get into this grappling situation, and there's this physical battle and there's this psychological battle going on.
And you literally see, as tennis players implode, because they're in this grapple mentally and almost have no tools or skills to be able to get out of that lockdown maneuver, and I think Tennis puts you in those scenarios.
Think that's kind of the nature of the game.
I do believe like, talking positive to yourself is part of the process, but it's a part.
Like I think there's other aspects of it around maintaining focus.
So if you look at like the stress model, like everyone has, I suppose a threshold of stress.
When you get pushed beyond your threshold, you're effectively gonna go into a fight or flight response.
If you've got tools to get out of like an overstressed or overstimulated situation, it probably wasn't push you down that path.
And so I guess if you compare athlete A and athlete B, one's probably got a different threshold or they've got different thresholds to one another.
So that's really what plays out in my opinion.
Yeah, you need those tools to handle those, handle the stressful situation.
And I think for people who don't know tennis and just think it's easy, people on the inside who've played enough and have an idea of the game, you can start to understand how complex it is, especially once you get to a reasonable level where everyone can kind of play where their mental and emotional side comes in.
And that is just a whole nother realm.
And if you haven't grown up having tools or being in an environment where like maybe your parents or people around you have just helped you navigate stressful situations.
You're gonna be thrown into this really intensity and you just won't be able to handle it.
So what are some of these tools that you're talking about for me, like breathing comes to mind, some sort of routines and rituals.
Is that where you're thinking in terms of tools?
Are there other tools that we should be aware of?
So, I mean, one of the methods I've picked up on more recently is called like mindfulness acceptance commitment.
And from my understanding, I believe that's what our body was using with her mindfulness coach.
But my interpretation of that is, we're often, our ability to perform is often the average of our performance as opposed to the peak.
So I think athletes definitely set expectations around trying to live at peaks rather than understanding that their average is really actually where their levels at.
So I guess expectations get in your way.
So being able to move beyond expectations and not let them kind of drive you into the ground.
I think it's part of the acceptance process.
But it's almost like having that top down view of yourself and being able to see the situation you're in.
And I think if you can do that, then you've got, I suppose some tools or the ability to focus on what can drive you out of that.
I think it creates clarity.
So that's a big one.
Yeah, and that's where the commitment part of it is.
It's like, if you're, what are you committed to?
Like sometimes, yeah, we all want success but what is driving success behind it all and often just, that's something we spoke about in a workshop around Ricky Ponting used to say, just focus on the ball.
So I think that's a good one in the sense that we have these stories playing out in our minds about, I can or I can't do this or whatever, but end of the day, that ball is going to come onto your racket and there's no story in that.
It's just, you're going to hit it sweet or you're not like and yeah.
Yeah, for sure.
I think you're touching on some gold here.
You have to accept the situation you're in, whether it's good or not good.
And if you can't, then I feel like you're gonna get stuck in that story mode with the loop of thinking that you're talking about.
So if it's a bad situation, you have to accept it for what it is.
That's what's going on right now.
You can't lie to yourself.
That's the truth of the situation.
So once you're accepting that, then you can actually start to have a view of what is going on and then hopefully start to embed some changes, some solutions.
But if you actually don't give yourself that moment, I feel like I'm completely guilty.
Just get stuck in.
We will
做它。
do it.
Yeah, in that match mode, just it gets all overwhelming and you can't think clearly and you just need to take that pause.
You start rushing, I know I have a rushing tendency, so just pulling myself and giving myself time, just to pause and reset, just go, what is going on right now?
And what's my next play?
How do I maybe try to find a different avenue here that's not working?
That's kind of tennis in a nutshell is some days it's gonna work, it's not, but you've got to try to navigate away in a sense and that's kind of the problem solving.
It's all
you need.
I think it's something you've got to get experience and practice, it's like not something you theorize about, like you've got to actually try and put it into practice.
And that's a really difficult thing when it's like mental, emotional, managing emotions can be pretty tricky.
It's true, it's true.
Like you can practice it on the training court to a certain extent.
I think any training that replicates a match as much as possible or in many different ways is helpful.
But again, like the match court is where it's all done.
Yeah, but I think this is where the mindfulness intersects in this concept because effectively you're getting like a neurophysiological change over time.
And I think it's important to recognise that in the sense that things are actually changing on physical level by putting effort into that practice.
And so, I guess when you're in those moments where you experience these heightened emotions, you've probably got better ability to wrestle back control so to Yeah,
I know what you mean because if you practice something like mindfulness over the course, it's not gonna change like that, it's gonna take months before you even maybe notice it.
And you it's hard to measure.
It's not really like something you can track like these eyes are connecting machines, they have a pass to which that shows you clear feedback.
It's more like something that used to really frustrate you, but maybe that your mom said to you all of a sudden didn't frustrate you and you're really calm about it.
That's mindfulness actually working.
And it's, you can see that tracking over time on the tennis court where like some challenging situation that you would normally mentally crumble in, all of a sudden you didn't crumble and you were calmer and you handled it and you are able to move through it.
没错。
That's right.
Which is like, they're the wins that you have.
That's like, I guess people maybe don't buy into it as much because it's not so measurable when they try it once.
It's like, Oh, it didn't work.
So what's the point kind of thing.
没错。
That's right.
I think as I having this conversation this morning around, I think people tend to like the concept of how mindfulness connects to something tangible or beneficial for themselves.
So I guess like it's pretty familiar or we're familiar with the concept of mindfulness and I assume we're kind of all gone, maybe I should do a bit of it, but what's the benefit?
Like why?
And I think I know it's because of that emotional intelligence aspect.
Are you saying like, I suppose those red, that fire in the belly starts to really rise up to your mind, you're able to, I suppose, deal with that.
And that happens in all areas of life.
It's not just definitely on the tennis court, but it's not just the tennis court.
No, absolutely not.
Absolutely not.
But I think for athletes, they need to have that understanding of why something like mindfulness is gonna help them, especially in the early phases when they may be adolescents and they're like, Oh, what am I gonna do this rubbish for?
Yeah, that's right.
It's it's like, gonna
help me perform and stay calm.
I was like, oh, okay.
Oh, and I tried it and I felt actually quite calm after I did like some breathing exercises.
Well, like that's really interesting.
Some people are gonna brush it aside, but the people that are maybe linking it to performance and how it's gonna better them on court.
对。
Yep.
In my stick.
对。
Yep.
是的。
Yeah.
And it just comes like for me, like having, I suppose a foundation in exercise and physiology and that sort of stuff like the fight or flight response is a pretty good indicator where your head's at.
And again, if you bring that back to the stress model, which is, I'm getting overwhelmed because whatever's coming at me is like really stressing me out.
Like it's ingrained in us to basically run or fight.
Like it's pretty simple, but you're definitely losing your mind.
And along with that, like attention focuses in on like one thing you can't think, laterally all these, I suppose consequences come about from that.
当然。
For sure.
And I think when you start this process, it's actually almost like the most painful part because you almost, I felt like when I went through, I went backwards at the start because I think you start to become aware of your BS.
You become aware of your crap that like you go, I feel like I'm getting worse, but it's not that you're getting worse.
You actually start to become aware of your patterns and how you respond in these stressful situations, how they're not ideal.
And that start, I try to tell the kids that I work with that that's not bad.
I know it sucks right now because you're realizing all this stuff and it's not very nice.
But having that awareness of what goes on means that you can actually start to change it.
You can actually start to embed it and change it with different behavior.
And mindfulness as the tool can help you manage that situation better
with time.
And if you bring that back in the context of athletic performance and trying to go to the highest level possible, those windows of opportunity start to close the older you get.
So if you create it or repeating patterns that aren't working, they are pretty detrimental to ability to perform at some point in time because you're gonna get found out.
Yeah, and you gotta catch it early because if you don't, it's they just start to groove in more and more and more.
And then it's, you gotta dig yourself out to change some of these habits a little bit more ingrained.
Which one of the big concepts that I think it's quite important to touch on here is like having a growth mindset.
And it's interesting, tapping into that, end up realizing that it's about trying to do something you're not naturally good at.
And I think that's important because we all like to experience doing things we're capable of but often adding on skills to what our repertoire of things we're already comfortable doing.
That's a really important part of growing and getting to where we wanna get to.
而且我
And I
think that can stand in a lot of athletes way.
Yeah, do you think that's the main reason as to why people, I guess improve faster or go further in the realm of tennis or any athletic pursuit?
Yeah, I'm be quite conscious of the fact that you can't just say one thing works for every athlete.
I think everyone's a bit different, but again, we are talking like in general terms.
So I do think it's a big part of it 100%.
Yeah, I think it's gonna actually help you always evolve because things that work for you at some point, you're gonna have to really adapt and change and add things in.
Like for example, I'll use a tennis example that I see that I observe is someone like Rublev, like amazing, established top 10 player world class.
But he's just struggling for that next step.
And it's just like, he's unbelievable striking huge forehands and good mover, but lacks the ability to close the net and lacks a bit of feel second serve a bit weak.
And I just think like, are these guys really aware of, I mean, I'm just talking like sitting on the couch, like I know, I don't know that much, but as an observer, this is what I see.
And are these guys really noticing this stuff and are they actually humble enough to know or to acknowledge that they need to change and grow and work on this part of their game to actually get to the next level?
Yeah, it's a great call in the sense of what do you do?
It's almost like a risk reward thing at that point as well.
Where if you try something different, does it actually pay off?
How do you know all that type of thing?
But again, think it's where you set your sights.
Like if you're, he's driven to be world number one and yeah, you're limited at five in the world, wherever it is.
I think you got to try it.
You can't just accept five, right?
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
I think it's hard as a tennis player because it's so just all the time, nonstop, just train, train, train twice a day, every no days off.
The season on the pro tour is so long.
It's like almost eleven months of the year.
And I think people feel like threatened or scared that they can't actually like say, Hey, I'm just actually gonna take three months off the tour.
Like no tour, just gonna work on this and then come back on.
I think if people did that a little bit more, I reckon we would see some, a lot of growth and improvement for some of these players that just maybe lacking a few things to get to that next level.
Yeah, I totally agree.
And I think like, we've to pay some attention to the ability to tap into our creative brain.
And I think when you're grinding all the time, yeah, I get you kind of have to, but there's also this other aspect of using our creative and creativity.
And I get like at his point, like there's pretty fine boundary between, I suppose that dynamic, but going bring it back to developing athlete.
Yeah, I think we need to be introducing at least allowing them to experience that side of themselves.
Yeah, for sure.
Where do you think tennis is heading athletically?
Like what direction is the sport going across the globe and I guess more from a strength and conditioning point of view?
Yeah, I suppose like I'm relatively new in the tennis world.
Like I've had a lot of experience like in SNC.
So don't wanna profess, like I know all the answers.
I guess maybe a better question is where do you think it needs to go from your experience of seeing a whole bunch of different sports?
Yeah, well, one thing we talk a lot about is developing competitiveness.
而且
And
I guess there's a model like that Tennis Australia using around to be pro, effectively they are suggesting that you need elite power, elite movement, elite competitiveness and elite tennis skills.
That doesn't mean you need to be like top level on all four, obviously that's ideal if you were, but having a handful of those things is pretty important to getting to that level.
So they talk a lot about what is the level and understanding like what that is.
And I guess competitiveness is a really big focus area.
And I guess that comes back to probably possibly a generational thing that we touched on earlier but also effectively it's resilience.
Like, are we developing physical and mental resilience in our athletes to get to that point and be able to compete.
And if we're not, then we're missing something if we are and we're doing something right.
But I think that has something to do to be honest with the environment as well.
Like if, there's a lot of talk in tennis around Europe and what they're doing in Europe.
And I guess like not that I've experienced, but my impression is it's like almost dog eat dog.
Like it's so cutthroat and everyone's just willing to drive like the absolute extreme because if you're not, you almost got no chance.
Is the environment the same here in Australia in the sense that it probably isn't, but a bit more isolated and there's reasons for it.
Yeah, it's true.
You're speaking on a really valid point.
Like we have everything here, it's so comfortable for us.
We live such a good life in Australia.
A lot of people live out of poverty, not in poverty and quite well off and have enough to like meet their needs and more.
And just from the stories I've heard about a few people going to Europe and playing some ITS over there last year.
And yeah, a boy from here, he actually lost the match to a boy that he was a lot better than, but the other guy was just hungry.
They would do anything like not pretty to look at in terms of technique, but just did anything to get the win.
And just that competitiveness is can take you a long way.
Like you said before, if you can do these other things like elite movement, elite power, elite tennis skills, as well as that, think you're gonna be pro barring like a catastrophic injury, like you're gonna be pro.
And after the match, like it was just him and his dad.
And they just had the biggest hug and celebrated that they got to win against this kid that maybe they shouldn't have beaten based on like rating or ranking.
And like, they were so happy.
Like it was the, like they won the lottery.
It was the best thing ever.
And like, how do we get kids to, this is a different environment.
Like for them, that's everything.
Maybe they don't have much money.
Maybe they don't have very many things.
Like that moment is life or death for them.
How can we create environments that are a little bit more life and death?
Like it means something like, it's not like, Oh yeah, I'm just gonna get another opportunity tomorrow.
It doesn't really matter.
Mom and dad would just pay for this.
I'm all that.
Like, it's all good.
I don't know if I have the answer to that one.
I think you're hitting the nail on the head, but like, what is the answer?
I mean, someone we talk about a lot and something that's driving my thinking is, it's easy to go and hit balls, but that's just not enough.
So I think you mentioned before, there's got to be somewhat consequences to the way we experience tennis or the environment that we're in.
Do we need to be leaders to really let lead from the front to say like, this is the environment we wanna create and this is the expectation.
If you're not part of that, then kind of maybe call your parents say, hey, I'm coming home tonight.
Yeah, we're not lacking opportunities like you said.
So if we start to minimize the supply, so to speak, I think demand increases.
Funny.
I wanna pivot a little bit to talk about, I guess someone before puberty, what should they take into consideration in terms of their training needs before puberty and then after puberty?
How does that strength and conditioning change in those two phases?
Yeah, so we talk about this concept of multilateral development.
That's pretty important to get like a wide range of skills that can then be applied to a particular discipline.
So in a sense, it's almost like you're developing the athlete that then can be, not become a tennis player, but you're kind of running concurrently.
So if you talk about again, go back to elite movement, elite power and elite tennis.
Mhmm.
You know, that's the like the ideal world.
You just can't do tennis though.
I guess that's the the one of the challenges with the sport is, yeah, as a sport, are we looking for them to go to other sports?
There's a real argument in that because you don't wanna lose the athlete to another sport, but are we then doing them a disservice by having them stay just in tennis?
So again, one of the things we talk about from a strength and conditioning perspective is almost being the other sport, like where we're really focused on getting that multilateral development athletically.
We're not just in the gym, them going in that space.
Like we do a lot of other movement orientated stuff where it might be just kicking a soccer ball or things.
And I think again, like I reflected on this a bit myself with my own childhood, I was doing all different types of things when I was young but we were outdoors a lot.
Is that different in this day and age?
Probably.
Yeah, think
所以。
so.
So I think we gotta pay attention to that definitely pre adolescence.
Yeah, a lot more exposure I feel when you were growing up and myself growing up, we just did so many different things.
I think now it's straight away streamlining into just paying for services and going into a specific discipline rather than just like play and explore and just go have a kick and have a throw.
Because we're seeing time and time again, the kids coming through now that they're just basing, they're lacking basic fundamental movements like kicking and throwing and not able to coordinate their bodies.
Think it comes down to, I guess developing a sense of rhythm and coordination through exploration of play when you're quite young and then I think you come into sport with a better base to work with and able to pick up movements a lot easier.
没错。
That's right.
I think it gives you the element of creativity when you go and apply this repertoire of skills into say a backhand or a forehand.
是的。
Yeah.
From a S and C point of view, it's really important that you start that process pre adolescence.
I guess, and the reason being where you can get to post adolescence early adulthood is much higher and far further than what you could do if you started or delayed that process.
That's a big shift in thinking in the context of, I suppose the traditional conservative mindset, which was like, don't touch away until post adolescence.
I'm not advocating that, we're getting like 10 year olds to live like hundreds of kilos, there's a smart way and there's a method around and appropriate method around doing that.
What are some of these movements that would be ideal to pre adolescent?
Like would it be a certain lunges or different types of movements that lot of weight
训练。
work.
什么
What
are some of those movements that you would highly recommend?
Yeah, so just getting the body moving and exposed to, I suppose the positions, saying a lunge like everyone can lunge but can we hold it in a deep position and be stable for example?
I mean, that's pretty, it's easy from my point of view, it's easy to do, but how much exposure are kids getting to that movement at that early age?
And then, you've got like the ability to run and then land and jump and this type of thing.
And I guess, it's really important that they're doing that as well because you get a lot of your bone mineral density from that exposure to those activities early on for the rest of your life.
Can you explain that a little bit more bone mineral density?
Yeah, yeah.
Generally curious.
Yeah, so I guess forces then applied through the body whether you're running, jumping or whatever.
So the bone mineral density in your bones effectively builds up where that stress is applied.
If I'm landing, my muscles are then contracting to absorb the landing forces, muscles pull on bone so the bones end up becoming stronger for that reason.
Okay, so the bones become stronger through more exposure with these different types of landings and just repeating it over time.
That's right, yeah.
And a lot of the way your body then morphologically starts to adapt.
You've got almost like this window, I suppose preadolescence into adolescence to, I guess maximize those benefits.
So are you saying that because we're not getting enough exposure to doing these movements enough that when some landing hits, it's maybe not ideal, our bones are breaking or like we're having, I guess like maybe cartilage or tendon issues because of that.
Is that a factor to two?
是的。
It is
a factor.
是的, definitely。
Yeah, definitely.
Not obviously it's not the only one, often injuries are multifactorial, meaning there's a number of things and can be quite complex, but 100 that's a factor.
Where do you see common injuries from?
I mean, obviously like again, so many factors, but what are the things that you see time and time again with injuries?
And I guess what would be a starting point to have a solution to these common injuries that we're facing?
Yeah, I guess like if you're getting a broader exposure to different movements, then the idea is that when you're challenged in a certain position like that movement doesn't break down.
And I guess like a poor pattern or a breakdown in pattern ends up leading to malfunction or injury, however you wanna describe it.
Yeah, I mean, that exposure is like pretty critical.
And I think it's important to recognise like the perceptual element to that, like injury can sometimes be because, we didn't perceive what we need to react to early enough.
And so then that process is delayed and then we react late and we're out of position and happens quickly and things go wrong.
So you're saying that it's important to really identify as a coach, what are the moving patterns that are breaking down or not ideal so we can identify them early and then have a solution in terms of re corrective movement patterns that have a better chance of staying injury free for longer.
Yeah, so it's about capacity early on, meaning that you build a broader and I suppose wider capacity, then the chances of that happening are reduced for sure.
And so capacity essentially means like exposure and potentially like overexposure to movement but also load, speeds, range of motion, these concepts within your training are really important.
Yeah, what issues do you face commonly with just strength and conditioning in the tennis space?
Do you find it hard to get people to buy in?
Like what are some of the challenges that you face doing what you do?
Yeah, I mean, throughout my time in this industry and in this role, like you get varying, I suppose, ideas of what SNC is across different sports.
So I think like in this day and age, it's definitely becoming more, I suppose, like embraced within the sporting community across different sports, but it has taken some time to filter down and I guess, like elite sport has embraced it for a long time, is it filtering down into the semi pro and then into even to the junior level?
So I think there's still a few, like a large or a big gap in that development level.
But as far as tennis goes, suppose I think the sport embraces it pretty well, like does the biggest challenge is actually like the relationship between the parent, the athlete and the coach and whether there's an awareness for and a good understanding of what this can do for you and your game.
I think if the parent and coach or the parent, I think has unique position in the tennis, don't know, because they have a very big influence on what their child is doing and the decisions that are being made in the way.
For example, like if my athletes feeling sore is the best thing to back off, keep doing the same thing or push further.
And so in my opinion, the parent doesn't have the awareness of how to manage that process, but they're making decisions, that can be a real challenge.
Sometimes you get a lot of, I suppose, incorrect decisions or however want to describe that.
It's a hard one because you're touching on possibly a sensitive topic, but more education and more awareness in the space, I think is really where we need to take it.
Yeah, everyone needs to be on board.
It needs to have like it's obviously individual sport but then needs to have that team element with the inner circle to feel like mom, dad, strength and conditioning coach, tennis coach, maybe some sort of mentor, they're all kind of on board doing what they need to do, but collaborating together without feeling like one person is trying to outdo the other person.
And we're all kind of here for the same mission together.
And doing that is really challenging sometimes because yeah, people have different perspectives and yeah, some people are open to some things, not open to some things and it just does make it hard and probably needs, I guess more better communication across the board where we're trying to understand what's going on here and what's best for the athlete.
Yeah, totally.
And a simple thing for me like is scheduling.
Tennis typically like you're putting a lot of time and effort into hitting and doing that but managing like a schedule and then managing an athlete's load is pretty important from my side of the fence in terms of getting like positive adaptations, which effectively means you're growing over time.
And so if you're not getting like that positive response, you're probably plateauing, you might be overloading which then feeds into the injury process.
So it's hard for someone without the skills and knowledge from my side of things to be able to do that.
But it's a really important part of, like I said, like of maintaining this growth curve, which is so important to getting to the top.
Yeah, for sure.
Where do you see your vision moving forward in this space?
It doesn't even have to be in the Tennis space.
Where do you see yourself moving into the future?
Where would you like to take your career in this space moving forward?
Yeah, sure.
I love tennis.
I think one of of things the that's kept me in SNC is tennis, to be honest.
The reason is is that I think the sport asked of you probably more than any other sport.
So I love that aspect of it.
I mean and I think if you get some of these processes that we've been discussing, like, working for you, I think you got a better chance of becoming your best tennis self, if that's how you want to describe it.
But yeah, mean, like, you know, I've obviously done, you know, continued learning in business as well.
So for me, like, I think, you know, there's a lot of diverse skills I have, like, do I see, like, the vision of myself staying in tennis forever?
I don't know.
Like, it'd be cool to, you know, like, see where that goes.
But I also know there's other things like, say, in business that I wanna explore and have a go at as well.
I suppose that kind of circles back to the fast twitch experience and maybe having another crack at a gym or something along those lines.
Sure, for sure.
No, I respect that.
This has been a pleasure, feel like it's been an awesome conversation that people can take a lot from in many different ways.
What's standing out for me is really your passion at the moment for the mindfulness aspect and how we can actually build competitiveness and intrinsic motivation for ourselves and how that's a big thing that we're lacking at the moment.
And I think it's something we need to really as coaches to help the youth especially in a country like Australia where we have a lot of opportunity to actually feel like we can build some more resiliency with the athletes.
I appreciate you and your work that you do.
Love everything you're about and yeah, thanks for coming on down today.
No, thanks, Luke.
Just there's one thing that just stood out to me if I may.
And it's, are we creating zoo tigers or are we creating jungle tigers?
And we absolutely need to be creating the jungle type.
That's what I'm talking about, 100%.
Yeah, we need more jungle tigers out
没错。
there.
That's right.
Yep, fantastic, thanks again.
Thanks mate.
