So let me tell you about a pretty bad dinner party and you know how you know, dinner parties always suck in my opinion.

I actually don't even know why people have them.

朋友聚在一起吃饭，这没问题，但熟人聚在一起却像完成任务，因为好久没见了，觉得是时候联络一下感情了。

Like friends getting together to eat, that's fine, but acquaintances sort of getting together as a chore because it's been a while and it feels like a good time to catch up.

It just seems so forced.

So I don't really like these kinds of dinner parties and I rarely go.

But I went to one recently and you know, all these dinner parties always have that one person that kind of just ruins it, and it was me this this time.

So we're at this snare thing, and it's pretty uncomfortable because these are acquaintances but not even on the spectrum of strangers and total friends, they would be like closer to strangers.

So we're sitting there, it's kind of awkward, and we start eating and the conversation suddenly goes to pets and how, wouldn't it be awesome somebody was like, wouldn't it be awesome if our pets could talk?

And immediately in my mind I was like, that sounds like a terrible idea.

But I didn't say anything.

And this conversation blossomed into an unnecessarily long discussion about how each person's pet would be would be you know, it would be great if each person's pet could talk.

And it was sort of my turn to talk because I was just sitting there like just watching this whole thing and they all kind of looked at me.

So I was like, I personally think it's a terrible idea.

And then I kind of had to explain, I had to defend my position.

There probably were like maybe two people out of a 100,000 that were like, how could you make light of a heavy situation like that and just being, you know, pieces of shit.

But what I'm trying to say is the power of humor during dark times is something that you truly understand if you've been through such dark times.

And also this clip is a really good display of true friendship, like how true friends give each other strength during times of unspeakable pain, right?

So it reminded me of dark times that I personally experienced, and how my friends acted during those times, and how funny it was.

Long time ago, when I was this was freshman year in college.

So one of my closest friends from high school, he got very sick during high school and then he recovered, it was something in his brain.

And he recovered fully, and then we were all off to college.

And I was headed to West Coast schools.

西海岸的学校开学时间比东海岸的学校晚。

So West Coast schools start later than East Coast schools.

So I first went to the East Coast and visited all of my friends' colleges and even went to some of their orientations, which is hilarious.

So I went to this dinner and I one of them came up and was like, would you guys would you like to join our frat?

So I flew to Boston, at the time of course like I didn't have any money, so I took like I took this flight that was mysteriously cheap from Korea to Boston.

It was like unbelievably cheap, and there was a reason.

我飞到美国后，又转了六次航班才抵达波士顿。

I flew to America and then I went through like six different flights to get to Boston.

不知为什么，我竟然换了六次航班，所以在到波士顿之前，我经过了五个不同的城市。

For some odd reason it made me like change flights like six times, so I was in like six different like five different cities before Boston.

我到达波士顿时，由于一路上这么多转机，已经很晚了。

So I get to Boston and obviously because of all these you know, transfers, I got there late.

And he had passed away before right before I landed.

So I wasn't able to see him during the last moment.

He was a really good friend.

So all of us had gathered for the first time in quite a while, and we all stayed at the mom's house.

And also, it was the first time that the high school best friends had gathered again.

Mind you, we're like basically teenagers still, right?

We're not even sophomores yet.

So we're like all debating, you know, what to do to pass the time, and for some odd reason we thought it was a good idea to take our friend's mom's car keys and go for like a night drive.

很明显，这听起来太糟糕了，毕竟她刚刚经历，而且仍在经历这样的打击。

Obviously that sounds terrible, right, because of what she had just gone through and was still going through.

但我们当时也都脑子不太正常。

But we were all messed up in the head as well.

所以我们心想，不如做点什么来转移注意力吧。

So we were like, let's just do anything to get our minds off this.

于是我们拿了钥匙，因为她正在睡觉，我们的计划是把车开出去，然后悄悄回来，把钥匙放回原处。

So we took the keys because she was sleeping, so our plan was to just take the car out and then come back quietly and just leave the keys right where we found them.

So we didn't think that it was gonna be, you know, it was gonna turn out bad.

所以我们上了车，但首先，当时车上一共有多少人？

So we get in the car but first first of all it's like how many people were there?

就一个人。

It's like one.

It's like eight people in one car.

Right?

而且这车根本不是SUV。

And this is not it wasn't a it wasn't an SUV.

七个人、八个人挤在一辆车里。

It's like seven, eight people in one car.

我们出去的时候都穿着睡衣，其中一个朋友不知为啥还带了条毯子。

So and we we we went out there like just in our PJs, one of the one of the friends actually brought out a blanket for some reason.

所以我们让朋友迈克开车，副驾驶坐了两个人，后座则挤了一堆人，还盖着一条毯子。

So we had my friend Mike driving, we had two people sitting on the passenger side, and then like a bunch of people in the back with a with with a comforter.

我们在波士顿的街道上开车，时间很晚了，路上没别的车，但我们正开着，我想迈克决定加速。

And we're driving down the street in Boston and it's it's really late, there's no cars, but we're we're like going and I guess Mike decided to speed.

And we we were speeding and immediately a cop just appears out of nowhere.

Sirens, everything, right?

And signals for us to pull over.

So we pull over, and this this is where, like, things could have avoided being bad, but just got worse.

So we we get out of the car, and the and the policeman is just, you know, he just saw a speeding car, that's that's all, right?

他朝我们走过来，我心里想：好吧，我们得尽一切努力别让事情变得更糟，对吧？

So he's walking over and I'm like, okay, we have to do everything possible to not make this worse, right?

我朋友迈克立刻就上演了电影里那种桥段，你知道的，就是半蹲劈叉，双手贴墙，一副等着被搜身的样子。警察刚走过来就说：‘没必要这样。’

And immediately my friend Mike does the thing, you know like in movies where you split your like where like you basically do half a split and like he's like hands to the wall, he's like the frisk, you know getting frisked, And he's like and the cop arrives and he's like, that's not that's not necessary.

对吧？

Right?

他完全沉浸在这种状态里了。

He's like and Mike is just like into it.

他一边说：‘对不起，警官。’

He's like, I'm sorry officer.

我身上什么都没有。

I have nothing on me.

我当时就想：现在说这句话简直是大错特错。

And I'm like, that is the last thing you wanna say right now.

首先，我们超速了，车上人太多，而且我觉得我们的驾照可能也不对。

And first of all, we were speeding, too many people in the car, and we also I I don't think we had the right driver's license.

对吧？

Right?

你必须得有州驾照之类的吧。

The you have to have, like, a state driver's license or something something.

或者也许迈克根本就没有驾照。

Or maybe Mike didn't even have a driver's license.

这一点我也不太清楚。

It's very unclear to me.

当时有太多不对劲的地方，尤其是他那样屁股朝外、双手贴墙、做劈叉的动作。

There were so many things that were not right at that moment, especially with him like basically like, you know, ass out, hands to the wall, doing the splits.

总之，警察来了，现在有两个警察，他们把我们带到了警局。

Anyways, the the cops the cops there there were two cops now, and they took us into the police station.

猜猜是谁来接我们的？

And guess who had to come pick us up?

是妈妈，我们朋友的妈妈。

The mom, our friend's mom.

她刚刚失去了儿子，却不得不来接走偷了她车、超速行驶、还对警察不配合的儿子朋友们。

She had just lost a son and she had to come pick up his friends who stole her car, and then speeded, and then were not compliant with the police.

所以她来接我们，我们看到她朝我们走过来，心里都想着：天啊，我们让这个周末对她来说比本该有的还要艰难。

So she came to pick us up, and we see her walking, like we see her walking towards us, and we're all like, oh, we have just made like this weekend harder for her than it needs to be.

这已经是她生命中最艰难的一天了，而我们又给它增添了更多负担。

It's already the hardest day of her life and we just added weight to it.

总之，她从警察局接上我们后，去了附近一家餐厅，我们坐在那里，拼命地道歉，这当然是应该的，对吧？

Anyway, so she gets us from the police station and we go to like a nearby diner I think, and then we're sitting there and we're all like profusely apologizing, obviously, right?

And she actually smiled for the first time in a few days and she was like, I'm actually really happy you guys did this because it kind of like feels like my son's still here because you guys all decided to cause mischief.

And I could tell she bent it.

So we, like, all apologized more and then we hugged her and everything turned out alright.

But in the moment it was hilarious.

As soon as Mike, like, put his hands on the wall and then just ass out, I'm sorry, officer.

I have nothing on me, I swear.

It was hilarious during a time where we weren't supposed to laugh.

我们本不该搞笑或调皮捣蛋。

We weren't supposed to be funny or mischievous.

那是我们第一次经历真正黑暗的一天。

And that was our first experience with like a truly dark day.

但我永远记得那位妈妈说的话，以及她脸上的表情，因为我们刚在葬礼上、葬礼后、回到家时，都看到她不停地哭泣，你知道吗，当你回到家，第一件事是——我稍后再解释——但那天我意识到，人去世后有两件事。

But I never forgot what the mom said and how her face looked because we had just seen her crying nonstop at the funeral, after the funeral, at home, you know, when you get home, the first thing you I'll explain later, but the first thing you you realize when a person passes away, there's there's two things that I I realized that day.

The first thing is it was a open casket funeral.

So first thing you realize is a person that's not breathing is something you've never, like, you've never seen.

We don't really acknowledge or recognize a person breathing, like, because it's such a everyone does it, right?

Like we don't really look at each other when we're like having dinner or talking and acknowledge that the other person is breathing, right?

But the moment a person stops breathing, it is so visible, it is crazy.

It is really, really visible.

So that was the first thing I learned that day.

And the second thing I'll explain later, but, you know, this was the worst couple days that she had.

And not just a couple days, the whole time when her son first got sick during high school till that moment must have been utter hell, right?

And because we were such fuck ups and goofballs, she literally laughed for the first time in a while.

Like when we told her what Mike did, you know, after we were pulled over, she actually laughed.

And it was like the first time seeing her laugh in days, and I always remember that.

And just seeing this Conan O'Brien clip reminded me, like as soon as I saw the clip I was like laughing, and then as soon as the clip ended I remembered that that day in Boston.

It's so true, it like you really do sometimes need humor in dark times.

恰恰是在最黑暗的时刻，你最需要幽默。

And it's it's actually during dark times is when you need humor the most.

但我们却有一种可以理解的社会压力，要求我们在黑暗时刻尽可能压抑幽默。

But we have like this understandable social pressure to suppress humor as much as possible during dark times.

对吧？

Right?

想象一下，有人在葬礼上大笑。

Imagine someone at a funeral laughing.

也许那个人想到了什么有趣的事，就在葬礼上突然笑了起来。

Maybe that person like thought of something funny and just starts laughing during like the funeral.

这个人会被认为是世界上最糟糕的人。

That person would be deemed the worst the worst human ever.

但我不同意。

But I don't agree.

我觉得，也许那个人想起了逝者曾经做过或说过的一件特别有趣的事。

I I I think that perhaps that person remembered a really funny thing that his, you know, that the person that passed away did or said.

这难道不是一种美好的回忆吗？

And that's such a beautiful memory, right?

最美好的回忆，就是和我们爱的人一起大笑的时刻。

The most beautiful memories are when we're laughing with the people we love.

所以我会说，正是在艰难和黑暗的时刻，我们最需要幽默。

So I would say that it is precisely during difficult and dark times that we need humor the most.

那时，幽默才能发挥出它最大的潜力。

That's when humor lives up to its full potential.

它拥有治愈的力量。

It has the power to heal.

这是另一个更个人化的故事，发生在我后来，很后来的时候。

And this is another story that it's a more personal story and it happened to me later on, much later on.

我第二次近距离经历死亡，当然是当我父亲去世的时候。

The second time I experienced death up close was obviously when my dad passed away.

所以我不想详细讲述整个事件的经过。

So I don't want to get into the whole story of how it happened.

简单总结一下，对了解内情的人来说，你们都知道整个故事，但我经历了一场丑闻。

To just summarize very shortly, for people who know, you'll know the whole story, but I went through this scandal.

我甚至都不愿称之为丑闻，那只是人们变得邪恶而已。

I don't even like calling it a scandal, it really was just people being evil.

我经历了所谓的Tajin Yo丑闻，人们说我根本没有上过斯坦福，我的所有学历都是假的，我的整个家庭也是虚构的，几乎我们的存在都是假的。

And I went through this thing called the Tajin Yo scandal, where people were saying I didn't go to Stanford, all my credentials were fake, my entire family was fake, like all of our, like basically our existence was fake.

And this went on for years.

在这一切发生之前，当我大学三年级时，我父亲得了癌症，但他战胜了病魔，到丑闻爆发时他已经完全康复了。

And my dad before all of that, when I was in my third year in college, my dad had cancer and he overcame it and he was perfectly fine by the time this was happening.

Once I became a musician and everything, he was fine.

就在这一系列针对我和我家人的可怕事件即将结束时，我父亲再次病倒，一住院第二天早上就去世了。

And then towards the end of this terrible thing that happened to my family and I, my dad fell ill again and he as soon as he fell ill, he he passed away the next morning.

So I was not prepared for this.

He went into shock and literally hours later he he passed away.

所以我没有准备好，我的家人也没有准备好，而且这还是我第一次操办韩国葬礼。

So I was not ready, my family was not ready, and it was also my first time having to do a Korean funeral.

这和我在波士顿参加的葬礼非常不同，对吧？

And it's very different from the funeral that I attended in Boston, obviously, right?

美国的葬礼和韩国的葬礼完全是两回事。

American funerals and Korean funerals are completely different.

在韩国，我们会举办为期三天的葬礼，我现在理解了其中的用意，但当时我觉得这对正在悲痛中的家人来说简直是最大的折磨。

So in Korea, we have like this three day funeral where I understand the logic of it now, but at the time I was like, this seems like the worst thing for the family that's grieving.

因为需要逝者的长子、长女，有时是遗孀或鳏夫，作为代表一直站在那里接待来访者。

Because it requires the oldest son or daughter or sometimes the wife of the deceased or the husband of the deceased, someone as a representative to stand there and welcome visitors.

现在访客通常有时间限制，比如晚上十点后就不接待了，但当我父亲去世时，按照传统，无论谁在凌晨四点上门，你都得在那儿迎候。

And because visitors nowadays, like they set a time, like a cap, where they don't accept visitors after ten, but when my dad passed away it was just customary to do it, you know, if someone shows up at four in the morning you're there.

So you gotta like stand there and greet visitors for three days, sometimes without sleep.

So it's it's it's just to me, it seemed like it seemed like a terrible burden to put on the people that are grieving, right?

Back to my whole thing about the power of humor during dark times, I was obviously devastated.

It wasn't just about losing my dad, It was about the fact that I felt like I honestly felt like the public had killed him, and that it was a murder.

所以我不仅仅是难过，我非常——我极其愤怒。

So I wasn't just sad, I was extremely well, I am extremely angry.

对所有参与了这场谋杀的人，他们现在可能还过着正常的生活，装作什么都没发生过。

To all the people that participated in that killing and probably are living lives right now acting like they they didn't.

But they did.

And so I was really angry, I was sad, I was also confused because this is just my first time having to do all of these things, like there's a there's a strict ritual that you do every time a visitor comes, like they take a flower to the front, and also having to do all the things behind the scenes, When when visitors aren't coming, I have to like figure out, you know, a a spot for the grave.

我得弄清楚所有需要处理的琐事，而这些事情多得数不清，对吧？

I have to figure out like how to handle all all of the things that need to be handled, and there's countless, right?

所以我快疯了。

So I'm like, going nuts here.

And I guess my face was just in a constant state of like, this fixed state of shock.

The thing is, because of the work I do, many of the visitors were famous entertainers, and a lot of them were comedians.

So they they came, they all came.

I'm not gonna name names here, but at these funerals, what happens is they come and then they do the flower thing and then they they bow or they pray, and then they bow to the family of the deceased.

And then they go to this area where everyone eats.

And it's actually encouraged for them to eat and drink and be semi loud, right?

I guess the whole thing is to make us, you know, get our minds off the situation.

So they go to this area and everyone's gathered there to eat, and it was it was literally like a like an awards show because so many famous singers, actors, and comedians, and all all of these people were coming, thankfully, gratefully.

他们前来表达哀悼之情。

They were coming to say their condolences.

所以这就像一场颁奖典礼，但非常悲伤。

So it was like, it was sort of like an award show, but really sad.

对吧？

Right?

So after one of a really famous comedian came and he after he did the bowling thing, he went to eat and I went to say it's so it's customary for us to go and now like greet them, right, and say thank you for coming, and you sit with them for a little while and just talk a little bit and then you come back to, you know, to greet other visitors.

于是我走过去坐下，那位喜剧演员一见我坐下，就问：‘你爸爸呢？’

So I go there, I sit down, and one of the comedians, as soon as I sat down, was like, Where's your dad, by the way?

我发誓，一开始不是我，而是我周围的人都倒吸一口冷气，‘哦……’

And I swear to God, at first it wasn't me but everyone around me that was like, oh.

你能看出来，他说完那句话后，自己也意识到：‘我刚才是不是问了句‘你爸爸呢？’'

And you could see that after he did it, after he did the bit, he was like, Where's your dad by the way?

他立刻反应过来，说：‘是不是太早了？’

He, like in a split second, he's like, Too soon?

但我马上就大笑起来。

But I burst out laughing right after.

那是我第一次笑出来。

It was the first time I laughed.

那是在第二天，对吧？

It was like on day two, right?

然后我笑了。

And I laughed.

接着另一位非常著名的喜剧演员坐到了桌旁。

And then another really famous comedian came and joined the table.

就好像事先排练过一样，他一坐下，看到我——因为那时我又恢复了震惊的表情——立刻就说：‘老兄，怎么这么愁眉苦脸？’

And as if it was if it was choreographed, he sits down and as soon as he sees me, like because at that moment I was like back to my shocked face right, as soon as he sits down he's like, dude why the long face?
