Welcome to Hey Tablo.
Many of our fans have asked me to do a list, like a movie list.
Movies to watch before you turn 30.
Movies to watch before you die.
Or do not die until you see these movies.
And here's what I've decided.
Instead of just giving you my list, because I've seen so many movies, I can't just like pick 10.
I'm gonna go to Letterboxd and look at this list that they actually just recently put up called movies everyone should watch at least once during their lifetime.
And I will decide for you if these movies are seriously worth watching within your lifetime.
And I'll pick out the ones that I really think belong on this list.
嘿,Tablo。
Hey, Tablo.
好。
Okay.
So I'm on Letterboxd.
And the great thing about Letterboxd is that the reviews are sometimes better than the movies.
Like, they are hilarious.
I don't know if that was the intention when this app was created, but it devolved or evolved into just really hilarious, like, one liner reviews.
So, of course, since I'm a movie lover, I'm movie buff, I do have a Letterboxd account.
On this episode, I will reveal my account and the reviews I have.
To be honest, I did it for a while and then I quit.
Because like, I watch so many movies, it's so hard for me to journal every single one and review every single one.
So I did it for a little while and then I quit.
Just because I like a movie doesn't mean you will, but I mean it's Hey, Tablo, I get to have an opinion.
Okay, so let's go.
The first movies here are Psycho, 2,001, Space Odyssey, Schindler's List, Goodfellas, Back to the Future.
Oh my god.
Even the first line.
Okay, it's gonna be impossible for me to pick and choose from all these movies, so here's what we'll do.
I'm gonna focus on movies you need to watch before you hit 30 or 40 if you're already like 35, okay?
Or 50 even.
But movies young people should watch before they're quote unquote tableau old.
So, Psycho, 2,001, Schindler's List, all amazing, beautiful movies, Goodfellas, of course.
But focusing on movies you should see while you're young.
I don't know if I would add those to the list.
So here we go.
I'm gonna keep going down until Okay, this one this one's gotta go in the list.
Spirited Away.
Okay, not only have I seen this maybe 15 times.
My favorite scene is when the parents turn into pigs.
That's such a powerful scene that like once you when I first saw it, I was like, this is like a nightmare.
Like, I thought this was like a family movie.
What the hell is going on?
But anyways, the reason why I would add this to the list is because, first of all, this is gonna be a weird take on the movie, but, like, it shows great work ethic.
Like, the work ethic of this main character, right?
She's like trapped on this island with like spirits and you know, it's like she should be afraid and just scared and just trying to escape as soon as possible, right?
Every single scene should have been the main character trying to escape, but she puts in work.
Like, she's like, I'm here.
I might as well work hard too.
You know what I mean?
Because in life, you're not always going to be in a situation where you want to do the work.
Not every job most jobs are terrible.
Know, you have a terrible boss.
You know, you don't really want to be there.
But before you escape, making the most of it, I think this movie shows that.
I know it's a weird way to see this movie, but that's what I got from it, believe it or not.
When I first saw it technically I was a kid too when I first saw it.
Right?
I was young as hell.
I watched it I think with Mithra and Two Cuts.
Two Cuts walked out in the middle.
Mithra and I watched the whole thing and the only thing that was going through my head, I was like Wow, that's a terrible situation to be in.
It's like terrifying and sucks, but she's like working hard.
Let's look at some of the reviews here.
Okay, Letterboxd, you go for the reviews.
Look at this.
The first review: I got lost in a department store when I was five, and it felt a lot like this.
Here's another one.
I mean, probably the best movie ever made.
I love these reviews.
Okay, wait, I'm going to review it too.
Okay, Spirited Away.
Work ethic.
Okay, here you go.
There's my review.
Work Ethic, five stars.
Okay?
Okay, let's go through some other movies.
All these movies are great, by the way.
So, you should most of these movies on this list, you should see them if you get a chance.
But I'm gonna just, like, run through them until I find movies that are perfect for young people to watch before they hit 30, or young people to watch before they hit 40, or young at heart to watch before you hit 50, 60, 70, 80.
Okay?
Fight Club, Do the Right Thing, all great movies.
Titanic, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
This has to go on the list.
I know many of you have probably seen this movie, but if you haven't, please do, because this got me through a lot of heartbreak.
When you're young, you're gonna have relationships that fail.
You're gonna go through breakups.
Heartbreak, right?
And this movie first makes you more depressed.
So if you watch this movie if you just recently had a breakup and Tablo recommended this movie and you're watching it, for the first half, you're gonna be like, Fuck Tablo.
Why did he recommend this?
Because I'm feeling worse.
Right?
But if you watch the whole thing, you get a full understanding of what loss is.
This picture basically like within like two hours, it's surreal, it's like a sci fi at the same time while being a romantic comedy and also drama and it just somehow encapsulates like the feeling of losing someone.
That scene where Jim Carrey is like alone in the car and he's like crying.
Oh my God, I've used that meme so many times.
Not for like heartbreak reasons but I use that for like, let's say an album came out and someone's like, Mid.
I'll respond with that meme.
Okay, let's look at some of the reviews.
This movie destroyed me.
It somehow reminded me of a quote from Call Me By Your Name.
If there is pain, nurse it.
And if there is a flame, don't snuff it out.
Don't be brutal with it.
We rip out so much of ourselves to be cured of things faster that we go bankrupt by the age of 30 and have less OBE IT AGE OF THIRTY!
Oh my god.
And have less to offer each time we start with someone new.
CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, also a great movie.
I'm gonna review this as well, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
I'm gonna give it five stars.
影评。
Review.
Forget AI.
I need that memory erasing machine.
Okay, let's go through more movies.
Good Will Hunting.
I don't wanna add it because it's so you know, you would expect it on a list of movies you should see before you hit thirty, forty, 50 or 60.
But do you know that my yearbook quote was the last line of this movie?
I gotta go see about a girl.
Okay.
Here's the thing.
In the movie, Matt Damon leaves a letter for Robin Williams, and that's the line.
Right?
That's what it says.
And then Robin Williams looks at it, and he's like, he stole my line.
Right?
And after leaving that letter, Will Hunting, that character, drives to Stanford.
That's how the movie ends.
Right?
And when I was doing my yearbook quote, I was headed for Stanford.
So I was like and also, this this movie was just my favorite movie at the time.
The funny thing is when I wrote the quote, I hadn't even seen the movie.
I don't think I I had actually seen the movie.
I downloaded a screenplay.
There was a screenplay that came up of the movie, but I was so interested in seeing it that I've and I I wanted to be a film filmmaker, right, and I wanted to be a screenwriter as well.
So I downloaded the the script first and read the script so many times that and I didn't care about spoilers.
Like, I just wanted to see how the script goes to the movie.
Right?
And I loved the ending even before seeing this movie.
So, like, reading a book.
Right?
And then I went to see the movie, and the movie, like, paid off.
Like, whatever I had imagined, it did more even more.
Right?
The music was so good.
So I'm gonna put that on the list.
Haru really loves this movie too.
You know the it's not your fault, that line?
I did that on Haru once, like, as a joke.
Here's the thing.
Like, we saw this movie, and some time had passed.
We saw it together, and some time passed.
And Haru, like had this, you know, thing at school that, you know, she was kind of down about.
And when she told me I was like, It's not your fault.
And she's like, Thank you, Dad.
And I was like, It's not your fault.
It's not your fault.
And I did the Robin Williams thing.
When she realized what I was doing, she was like, Dad, what the fuck?
Not the time, Dad.
Okay, I'm gonna review it.
It is my fault though.
Finding Nemo, great movie.
Requiem for our Dream, terrifying movie.
Pulp Fiction, when it first came out, was crazy.
Kung Fu Panda.
Seriously, there are basically no movies here that I haven't seen.
Maybe there's like two or three.
Okay, Matrix, Akira.
Okay, I'm gonna keep going.
Up.
Up was so good too.
That opening scene is a film in itself.
So like, did you cry?
I definitely.
I cry a lot in movies though, to be honest.
I cry during Little Mermaid.
Not the animated one, the live action one.
I cried when the dad lets the daughter go.
You know, I once cried, like, long time ago, we were in a car together at Pikai on the way to, like, Busan or something, I think, to perform.
And in the in the car, there was a TV thing that you could watch.
So we watched Spider Man three, the one with Tobey Maguire.
And it's the one where, like, it's it's the it's the terrible one.
The one where Sandman comes out and Venom.
But anyways, there's a scene where Sandman, I think he's like dying.
And Sandman takes out this thing and like looks at a picture of his kid.
And at the time I was a kid, like I hadn't been married, I would never imagine being a dad at that age, right?
But when that scene came out, Mithra and I were sitting like this, Two Cuts was sitting in the front, right?
So Mithra and I were watching it and that scene comes out and I go like this, right?
And what's hilarious is Mitra without looking at me, Mitra is like please don't fucking tell me that you're crying in the middle of Spider Man three.
Right?
I'm like, I'm not crying.
I'm not crying.
I'm just looking out the window.
And he's like, you're fucking crying during, like, this fucking sandman.
Spider Man three, you're crying.
And I'm like, I'm not crying.
I'm not crying, something got in my eye.
So I cry a lot.
But anyways, Up's great, but I want this list to maybe have 10 movies.
Okay?
So I'm gonna keep going.
Oh, La La Land.
Great movie.
Oh, Look at these bangers after bangers.
Forrest Gump, Pursuit of Happyness, Empire Strikes Back, Terminator two, Parasite.
Oh, Pursuit of Happyness needs to go on this list.
Do any of you remember a few weeks back on Epikaze, we did like this life advice kind of corner?
Two Cuts
And Two Cuts was like, you know, put your hand on your over your heart.
Did you really try that hard?
Did you really try so hard that you're you're you're you're complaining or you have burnout?
Did you really try that hard?
If you can say I've worked really hard after watching this movie, respect.
Because this movie is the definition of somebody, like, fucking grinding.
Without giving, too many spoilers, this is actually a movie based on a true story.
And, Will Smith plays, the dad.
And it's it's it's the dad doing everything he possibly can to provide for his kid, right?
And he goes from, like, having less than nothing to so in the true story, he becomes this legendary investor and becomes like a multi millionaire, right?
More than that, right?
But it shows Tim going from all these missteps in his life and going from rock bottom to this job I'm not gonna say what.
And I'm also not gonna reveal whether or not he gets it.
Although, I just told you what happens in the true story.
But anyways, there's this one scene where the dad and the kid, they are evicted from their home.
So they're basically homeless.
Right?
And at night, they have no place to sleep.
So they go to the bathroom at a a subway station, and the Will Smith character is holding it's his actual kid in the movie.
So he's holding his kid and has one leg against the doors so that no one can come in Cause he's scared someone's gonna come in, right?
He's like in the bathroom stall basically.
And, wow, that scene was so powerful.
I first saw this movie, on the plane.
For some reason, I always choose, the wrong movies when I get on a plane.
I started like crying.
Right?
And Mithra was sitting over there.
He's just like, Again?
Anyway,
Anyways, I watched this movie again recently.
And let me just tell you, seeing this movie before you're a dad and then watching it after you're a dad or a parent, it it it is so devastating.
But because it's so devastating, at the end, the catharsis you feel, it really makes you feel like you can do anything.
If you have someone worth doing anything for, you do have the superpower to do anything.
Right?
It's hard to go to those lengths because we don't we don't always have somebody to protect or somebody to do everything for, right?
But once you have it, you'll be amazed at your potential.
You'll be amazed at the things you can do and the lengths you can go to.
Once you have that somebody, it doesn't have to be a kid, right?
It can be a friend.
It can be a significant other.
But what I'm saying is, if you have somebody that you want to strive for, right?
If you want to give more than you have for, you gain those superpowers.
I believe that that's what this movie teaches.
And it's good to watch as a young person because even if you aren't thinking of getting married and becoming a dad or whatever or a mom, it puts your life into perspective a little bit.
Everybody, you know, I don't subscribe to the idea that cert like, certain types of struggle should be compared to other types of struggle.
Like, everyone's struggle, regardless of what degree it is, for that person, it is a struggle.
So I I don't believe we should compare one person's problems to another, but does for me, it put things into perspective.
I was going through multiple different things during the first time I saw this movie.
I was in my mid twenties when I first saw this movie and, you know, the twenties are terrible.
Everyone who's been through the twenties, know how terrible it is, right?
Like, I wouldn't go back.
But it was just confusing and, like, just, you know, just even when things are good, there's always something going terribly wrong.
And this movie sort of, like, put things into perspective.
And I was like, you know, the thing that I need to overcome isn't as difficult as what this character is overcoming.
So maybe I can do it.
Right?
So this is going on the list.
I'm gonna give it a review.
Don't watch on a plane.
好的。
Okay.
Moving on.
Oh, Whiplash 1000% needs to go Oh, and I've reviewed it.
好的。
Okay.
So, I was doing Letterboxd for a while, I guess I reviewed Let's see what my review was.
Show your activity.
My review was I watch this once every three months.
Basically, whenever I feel lazy.
This movie definitely has to be on the list.
Okay?
And I guess when I reviewed it, I reviewed it in February last year.
Oh, it was February this year.
I guess I rewatched it that day, too.
Sometimes when I feel lazy, I don't even watch the visuals.
I just like leave it on as sound.
So the movie is about like this jazz drummer and this school like I think it's a college, right?
Like a music academy.
And like, this musician slash instructor named Fletcher, who's like the fucking devil.
Okay?
Like, he's the most abusive, problematic human.
Like just the way he berates you to quote unquote push you into greatness, it's just unbelievable.
If you've seen this movie, you know what I'm talking about.
But if you haven't, warnings.
Okay?
Like, a huge warning.
Do not go into this if if you have problems with what a movie character says.
Okay?
Because it's it goes, like, it goes worse than you you can possibly imagine.
This movie was made by the La La Land director.
And it was originally one of, like, his I think he he it was a short film that he made as, like, a student, maybe?
And then he turned the short film into a feature length.
And when this movie came out, I identified with it because of two things.
One, I'm a musician.
Right?
I love music.
So when I watched the movie, I identified both with the main character, the young student, who's in the band that this terrible teacher's, you know, the leader of.
And I also identified a little bit with Fletcher, although he was just fucking batshit crazy.
Right?
And the reason why I identified with both characters is because as a music creator and as a musician, I put myself through a lot of shit.
Sometimes to the point of like, like, abnormal.
To the point of like, this is just this manic, right?
Like this manic, you know, fugue state of like, just creating.
And especially when I first saw the movie, it was that it was around, you know, that age.
So I identified with somebody being a student of music trying to become great.
And also, I'm the leader of epic high.
Right?
And when I was watching this movie, I actually watched it.
I rented out a theater so that a lot of our fans can watch it together.
Like a whole theater, right, for a night.
Mithra and Toukat saw this movie too, and the whole time I was looking at their reaction because I was worried that they would see me in Fletcher.
Because I, admittedly, I've been pretty hard on my members, especially at the beginning of EPIC High.
Like, I wanted our team to be great.
Like, I wanted us to be better than we actually are.
Right?
And to do so, I had to sometimes push my team, including myself.
I didn't just do it to them, but I did it to the three of us, to push ourselves beyond our limits, right?
And always pushing the envelope.
And sometimes that required me to you know, demand things that I didn't really want in my heart, but I knew that it would get us to that next level and ultimately make our fans happy.
Right?
So, I was worried that they see me in that character.
I kept looking at them, right?
And here's the thing, they were looking at me too.
So, this movie made me, like, rethink some things too.
Was like, you know, greatness is great, being awesome and our fans being happy with music that's better than what we can deliver.
That's all good, but like, I don't want to be that guy.
Right?
So I identified with him in some ways and also hated that I did.
Here's the thing that I hate to admit.
There's that one scene after the instructor does, like, these terrible things, and then they split up, basically.
And then they get packed together at, like, this jazz cafe, right?
Chance meeting.
And then they sit down together.
And the student is supposed to hate this guy.
Right?
This guy basically killed him.
Almost killed him.
Right?
At that moment, like, there's a Fletcher says to the student, You know, but I did it to make you great.
And who does that these days, right?
That's the gist of what he says.
He's like, Nobody strives for greatness anymore.
And nobody is willing to push somebody to become great.
And if all the greats that we love in jazz or music or arts in the arts, if they weren't pushed, would we have them?
That's the gist of what he says.
And although the way that that character did it is totally wrong, right?
When he said it, I was like, Yes.
Like, I could hear my inner self agreeing with him.
Right?
And it's kind of sad because I'm like that to myself.
I'm basically Fletcher to myself.
And I've always been that way.
And when I was a kid, my parents were like that to me.
A lot of the teachers, like because of age that I grew up, the time that I grew up, especially like when I was really little and I was growing up in Korea.
Yeah, abuse wasn't even called abuse.
Like, teachers would just, like, seriously just beat on you.
Right?
So I I think after that, once it stopped, like, I started doing it to myself.
I think I've mentioned this before.
And I have a song called Over.
It's an Epik High song, but it's a solo song and it's in English.
And the whole song is about being an overachiever.
And I put all these emotions into that song.
And I wrote that song before I think it was before I saw this movie.
But when I saw this movie, was like, Oh my God, this is what Over was about.
Okay, since I've already reviewed this one, I'm gonna pass.
Punch Drunk Love, Great movie.
Okay.
Dead Poets Society is so obviously a movie that needs to be on this list.
Do I need to put it in?
It's so good, though.
You know, one of my favorite things about being a parent is that I get to rewatch all the movies I loved with my daughter.
And I know that's not the case for everyone, but like, it just so happens that like my daughter loves films.
And I don't know if it was because of me, but she just has this distinct taste.
And she, one day, came to me and she was like, Dad, have you seen Dead Poets Society?
And I was like, Of course.
I've seen it multiple times.
And she's like, I want to see it with you.
Right?
And I was like, How do you know about it?
She's like, You know, I love movies so I always search up classic movies.
I'm like, Classic movie?
Dad, have you seen John Wick one?
Yeah.
Do you want to watch that with me?
I've always been fascinated by classic films.
John Wick one?
But anyways, so she wanted to watch Dead Poets Society and I warned her.
I was like, you know, it's a pretty heavy movie.
It's a beautiful movie, but it's it's it's pretty heavy and there's a scene in there that, like, really really fucks me up every time I see it.
Because, you know, the one character in this movie that's supposed like, the dad expects him to be a doctor, but he wants to do acting?
That whole storyline fucked me up so bad when I was young.
Not because of me, but because I saw I have an older brother who's much older than me, and his life was sort of like that.
And I had to see that as a kid, right?
Which I think that was the reason why I eventually ended up going to the arts because I saw a dream crushed under the same roof.
And the way a dream gets crushed is like with a whimper.
Anyways, I saw that.
So this whenever I rewatch this movie, just like that whole tragic storyline is more like it just seems so personal to me and hurts me every time I see it.
But anyways, I warned my daughter and she's like, you know, I still want to see it.
And we watched it together, and, like, I cried, and she cried.
And then she even wrote, like, a like, a thing about it.
You you guys have read it.
Right?
She wrote, like, an essay about it.
And but she she loved the movie.
Like, although there's a tragic there's multiple tragic storylines in this movie, at the end of it, it is uplifting.
It is uplifting.
Again, like Good Will Hunting, it's got Robin Williams in it.
Robin Williams is such a great actor.
And I think I think if you watch this movie, like, you miss him more.
Right?
So it's even more tragic.
And this is a weird for thing for me to throw out, but, like, I was in a movie with him.
Although I was in it for, like, a split second, I was in believe it or not, if you don't know, and if you're hearing this for the first time, you're gonna be like, what the fuck?
Tablo, me, I, was in a movie called August Rush.
And I actually shot the movie for over, like, over almost a week, I think.
And I was with Robin Williams for a week.
The one scene I'm in is Robin Williams throws a knife.
It lands like it lands like right in front of me, and I get shocked.
I shot many more scenes but I only made it into a split second.
Okay?
So, it's not like I went there to shoot a split second.
But anyways, he was an amazing person.
Like, you know, there were all these people that were shooting together.
It was like an ensemble but he was he like would sit with me and like have conversations with me.
He actually knew quite a bit about Korean music.
And he was just so so humble.
Like, he didn't even come with, like, a manager or anyone.
He came just with a suitcase, did his work.
He was friendly to everyone, made us laugh.
He was awesome.
So, anyways, so I'm gonna review this.
Wait, I haven't reviewed this?
I'm sure all the reviews here are like, Oh, Captain, my Captain, but let's see.
Yo, this comment, I can't beat this comment.
Okay, someone reviewed, and this is their review.
Be right back.
About to carpe all the DMs.
I'm about to car pay the shit out of these DMs.
Okay, I can't beat that.
The brilliance.
How can I Nowadays, people are too busy car paying DMs?
哦。
Oh.
哦。
Oh.
I did.
It's kind of hard being a Letterboxd reviewer.
It's a lot of pressure.
You're always on the verge of becoming cheesy or cringe.
You have to like, Oh man.
The car paying the DMs.
Oh my god.
Okay, let's go see some more.
Toto great movies.
Okay, I'm not even going to get through half of this list and I'm going hit 10.
Oh, Inside Out.
The first Inside Out.
I saw this on a plane again, but this time I was with Haru and my wife, right?
And Haru and my wife, like the seats got mixed up, so they were sitting with another person and I was sitting with two other people like towards the front of them, right?
So they could they could see me from the back.
And I'm like, you know, I want to see something light because the last time I was on a plane, I watched Pursuit of Happyness and like, you know, I was crying on a plane.
Don't want to be crying on a plane.
So I turn on Inside Out.
I'm like, you know, it seems fun.
It's got weird, wacky characters.
Turn it on.
You know when I cried?
Didn't take me long.
Towards the beginning of the movie, there's a scene where the daughter plays hockey.
That's it.
She's just playing hockey.
I think it was like a montage.
It wasn't even like a proper scene.
Right?
But I don't know.
I don't know what it was.
Right when it happened, I went And as I went right over here, my wife and my daughter, they saw me and they're like My daughter's just like, look at my dad with those Pixar tears.
If you put a daughter in any movie, I will cry.
Seriously.
Any movie.
It doesn't matter if it's a horror film, a comedy, like an anime.
It doesn't matter.
Daughter, like a dad and a daughter come out, I just cry.
Don't know what it is, I just start crying.
I'm like, Okay.
Inside Out, I don't think I should put it on the list.
I'm going to go Okay.
Since I'm not going to get through the whole list, I'm going to go from the very back and move towards the middle now.
Okay?
Because I don't want to shortchange all of these movies.
And I still have to reveal my profile.
Right?
Again, I'm gonna go through them pretty fast.
Okay, let's see here.
About Time.
Ferris Bueller, great movie.
Interview with the Vampires on this list?
I've seen it.
I like I I liked the novels.
Hold on.
Let me see here.
好的。
Okay.
Page eight had some bangers, but nothing that I I would add to the list of movies you gotta see before you hit 30.
好的。
Okay.
Let's look at page seven.
A lot of bangers here as well, but put Robocop on here.
I mean yeah.
好的。
Okay.
It's like a cult classic, and I loved it.
But I don't know if this is the movie you gotta see in your lifetime.
You know, I do feel like this list was front loaded.
Ghost Dog, great movie.
Oh, Lady Bird was such a good movie.
Such a good movie.
But I now have to be picky because I can only add three more to this list.
I know someone some, like, movie hipster is gonna be, like, looking at our final list, and they're gonna be like, this is what Tablo thinks are the 10 best movies ever made.
No.
I'm trying to just pick a list of 10 movies you see before you're 30, before you're young like, before you get, like, quote, unquote old.
Okay?
Or 40 or 50, whatever.
Have you seen this movie called Edge of 17?
It's good.
Man, I've seen every movie.
Like, indie movies, like, just it's a really good movie.
It's about, like, you know you know, someone at the edge of 17.
It's really good.
Mind you, this list this list that Reddit compiled on Letterboxd, it it doesn't have many many it it doesn't have many movies that I would consider movies you should see in your lifetime, by the way.
Reddit
Reddit doesn't always get things right.
We know that.
Right?
Oh, look.
Oldboy is on this list.
Because my wife is in it, I'm gonna skip over it.
不是。
No.
I don't get at it because that.
不是。
No.
不是。
No.
That's too that's too, like, biased.
Oh, you know, The 400 Blows, this there's a movie called The 400 Blows, and it was made in 1959.
Okay?
Francois Truffaut.
And it it was a movie of during the French New Wave.
There was a there was an era where these movie critics started making their own movies.
And they it was very free flowing and they broke all the standard rules of film.
And this was one of my actually, like, one of my favorite movies as a kid.
But it might be a little too old to put on this list.
And also, don't want if I put this on this list, people are going be like, Oh, look at him, trying to seem like he's a sinner for.
Okay.
I'll come back to that.
好的。
Okay.
It's I don't think it's on this list, but here are some movies that that I think should be on it.
I'll avoid movies that my wife was in because, like, that's just, you know, it's too biased.
好的。
Okay.
This movie is not for everyone, but there is a movie recently that came out in Korea called The Match.
It's based on a true story.
It's like a go.
It's about a go master.
Go is a huge deal in Korea.
And if you, you know, to sum it up, like, to to, like, give you a clear understanding with one sentence.
Do you remember the whole AlphaGo thing?
AI versus human?
The reason why they went against a Korean Go master is because that in Korea, Go is huge, and Koreans are amazing at Go.
Right?
And this is the true story of, this master who was just unbeatable.
He took on a young prodigy and, you know, he even let him live at his house and basically was a father figure to him.
And it shows the whole journey from basically The Apprentice overcoming the Master.
And the reason why I put this movie on this list is because if you watch it now while you're young, you will 100% identify with the apprentice character, with the young, up and coming, you know, prodigy.
And then later on in your life, if you watch it, you will identify with the older master.
It seems that I've already rated this movie, and I only gave it three and a half stars, right?
It's like it's the perfect movie.
And there are a lot of movies like this, you know, with like a once boxing champion who becomes the aging champion and then gets replaced by the up and comer.
There's a lot of movies like this, right?
And even The Godfather, if you think about it, is a story about the Don, the father who gets replaced by the son, right?
Like the changing of generations.
And if you're under 30 right now, you know, it's not going to seem real to you, like time going by and then your, you know, your age not your numerical age but like the age of you being overcome or overtaken by another generation.
Right?
And the feeling of an aging champion or an aging boxer is not something that you can imagine right now because you're the up and comer.
But there are certain movies like this that I would recommend seeing twice, maybe once when you're young and then like ten years later.
Because you get a totally different reading of the movie, and you will never have that experience unless you watch it now when you're young, and then watch it again when you're older.
Same thing with Pursuit of Happyness.
Watch it before you get married or have a kid, and watch it later when you're a parent.
You'll get a totally different reading.
So that's on the list.
Wait, let me see what some people said in the reviews.
I mean, I'm pretty good at UNO, but I'm not bragging.
Maybe give us two films that are really niche.
Really niche, you say?
Like, how niche do you want?
I can niche the niche.
是的。
Yeah.
Like, don't make me go to my phone.
I mean, I don't wanna, like, seem like I'm, like, bragging, you know, about my taste or anything like that, you know?
Just putting me under the pressure now.
Like, god.
All these movies seem Have you seen a movie called Marvin's Room?
Booyah.
It's a pretty old movie, but it's a young DiCaprio before Titanic when he was doing a lot of indie movies.
There's something so subtle and quiet about this movie.
Okay.
So let me just read you the synopsis.
It's a it's a story about the years that keep us apart and the moments that bring us together.
A leukemia patient attempts to end a twenty year feud with her sister to get her bone marrow.
It's a very quiet movie that, even with DiCaprio attached, cannot possibly be made for theatrical release in 2026 because nobody would invest in it, right?
Because I've mentioned this before on this podcast, but unfortunately, the age of subtle stories and, like, poignant, quiet stories that are impactful to the soul, The age of those kinds of movies, like, you know, being in theaters is pretty much sadly over.
Right?
They may go straight to, like, streamers, but theaters don't even want them.
Right?
It's just all blockbusters.
Or if you have a low budget, like, film film, it's usually horror for that reason.
It's hard for the theaters.
I mean, I understand.
Right?
It's hard for people to for them to get people to the theater to sell popcorn to.
Right?
So but believe it or not, you know, there was a there was a period of time where movies were small, like indie movies even, had theatrical releases.
They they weren't all Titanics.
Right?
We had just small stories about families, small stories about heartbreak, small stories about overcoming loss that were in theaters and that did well.
And this movie is sort of like the definitive late nineties indie film.
And DiCaprio is amazing in this movie.
Everyone in this movie is amazing.
Drake has a song called Marvin's Room, by the way.
I'm not sure if it was because of this movie, but when that song dropped, was like, Oh, this guy saw Marvin's Room?
But the song had nothing to do with it.
So I was like, Okay, what?
Okay, I gotta review this though.
Marvin's Room.
Well, here.
I'm going to just write in Korean, like Pixar Bang or Dora Bang, but Okay.
I think I need to add a movie that is fitting for the times we live in.
There needs to be an AI movie in here, right?
And we have multiple choices.
There's a movie called Ex Machina which is fucking mind blowingly good.
Even Terminator is basically an AI movie, right?
About how if you give AI control over our defenses, it will 100000% lead to the end of humanity.
Back in those times, we called that science fiction.
Now it's just the news.
But to stay within the movies to watch before you hit 30, I'm gonna go to AI, the movie AI by Spielberg.
It was originally a movie that was being developed by Stanley Kubrick.
But after Stanley Kubrick passed away, the baton was passed to Spielberg, and he he completed the movie.
This is a it's called AI.
It's called artificial intelligence.
And, yes, it's a movie based in the future with, you know, artificial intelligence, like, humanoid robots, right, that are just lifelike and just basically human.
Sort of like in the vein of Blade Runner.
Now that I think about it, Matrix is also like an AI movie too, right?
But while those movies like Terminator or Blade Runner, like, those movies kind of focus on how A.
I.
Becomes villains and just completely destroys humankind.
A.
I.
Also touches on those topics but is at the heart of the movie.
It's a movie about a child.
Right?
Okay, so at the beginning of the movie, this family their son goes into a coma and likely won't wake up from it.
So they get a replacement for their child that is an AI that looks exactly like their child.
Okay?
There's, like, the service that does that.
Right?
But, you know, and now they've adopted this AI version of their child and but the the the actual kid, the biological son, wakes up.
What do you do?
Right?
So the parents abandon the AI child.
And it's just I I can't really put into words, like, what this movie does but like it makes you think about humanity, at times it makes you afraid of the future and technology but at the same time it makes you feel bad for technology, you know, because A.
我。
I.
Didn't want to be created, right?
Like humans created it, right?
And also touches on, you know, the topics of like what happens when you hand over control of incredible power to humans.
Right?
To certain humans, right?
When they control the power to create life, will they be responsible or will they abandon it?
When I watched it, you know, like, I I I heard whispers of, like, my own childhood.
A lot of times I felt very alone.
I was in a different country by myself as, like, a really small kid.
Right?
Like, this movie, the AI character David is 11.
Right?
And I was alone in a con like, a continent by myself.
Like, my entire family was elsewhere when I was around that age.
So I kind of identified with the A.
I.
Child at times.
Anyways, it's definitely a movie you should see.
If you're gonna watch one A.
I.
真的。
Movie, I would recommend starting with this one.
Because the other movies are like great, but like they're like fucking terrifying.
And and honestly, like, if you watched some of the other movies, you're supposed to like watch it with when we watch these movies like in the early two thousands and like the nineties, like Terminator and stuff and The Matrix, we were watching it, enjoying it because it was so far fetched.
Like we already knew that, you know, that's it's possible, but maybe not in our lifetimes.
Right?
So we still had enough of a comfortable distance to just enjoy the movie as, like, a popcorn flick.
But if you watch Matrix now, try it.
Try watching Matrix and Terminator two now.
It doesn't even seem like movies about the future.
It just seems like like imminent.
And you're like, what the fuck?
And just gives you more anxiety.
But Artificial Intelligence, A.
我。
I.
By Spielberg, this movie was it's very poetic.
It's like watching a Miyazaki Hayao film, you know, at times.
So I would recommend this one.
Some people don't like this movie because they believe that if Kubrick had done it, it would be much better.
But at the same time, you know, I agree to an extent but like if Kubrick had done it, I think it would have been amazing but also a little colder.
Some people don't like how Spielberg is, you know, injects emotion into all the movies but sometimes you need it.
好的,A。
Okay, A.
我。
I.
Artificial My Review is This is based on a true story, right?
I'm gonna give it 4.5 stars.
To wrap up the episode, let's go into my account and look at some of the movies I've reviewed.
I only had this profile for, like, a really short period.
I think I just made it to keep track, and then, like, after, like, a week, I abandoned it.
But The Godfather, I wrote, I won't dine with someone who hasn't seen this.
Interesting.
For Wicked, I wrote, I honestly hate musicals and I still liked it.
For Marty Supreme, I wrote, The scene with the dog running through the smoke was immaculate.
Sinners, I wrote, I love Michael B.
Jordan the way he loves anime.
For the menu, I wrote, I ate like three cheeseburgers after this.
One battle after another, I wrote, In life, one must either have a friend like Sensei or be a friend like Sensei.
And the most recent movie, before I reviewed the movies today, I reviewed Epikai 20: The Movie.
It was Epikai's concert movie.
I think I was like, And then I searched and they had it on Letterboxd.
So I gave it five stars.
And my review was, One of the main characters is just like me for real.
I'll see you next week.
嘿,Tablo。
Hey, Tablo.
