ABC 收听。

ABC listen.

Speaker 1

One, two.

Speaker 1

One, two, three, four.

Speaker 1

Oh, hey there.

Speaker 1

My name is Nij, and today on Imagine This, I'm rocking out on my drum kit.

Speaker 0

I'm going to play the violin.

Speaker 0

I'm going to play the tapping sticks.

Speaker 0

I'm going to play guitars and drums.

Speaker 0

太吵了,Nij。

It's too loud, Nij.

Speaker 1

什么?

What?

Speaker 1

I can't hear you over all the rocking.

Speaker 0

太吵了,Nij。

Too loud, Nij.

Speaker 1

啊。

Ah.

Speaker 1

Sorry.

Speaker 1

I guess it is pretty noisy.

Speaker 1

I love making music.

Speaker 1

You can make soft sounds and loud sounds, low sounds and high sounds.

Speaker 0

Wait, what?

Speaker 0

How does it make the sound?

Speaker 0

The strings.

Speaker 0

Touch the string.

Speaker 0

And they make sound.

Speaker 0

Maybe the sound bounces into our ears.

Speaker 0

With a special sound blast?

Speaker 1

啊。

Ah.

Speaker 1

A few of you have been curious about that.

Speaker 0

Name is Tom.

Speaker 0

I am four years old.

Speaker 0

My question is, how do our ears work?

Speaker 0

Hi, I'm Harry, and I'm four years old.

Speaker 0

And I would like to know how are sound made and how does it get to our ears.

Speaker 0

Hi, Nij.

Speaker 0

My name is Mackenzie, and I'm four years old, and I'd like to know how the ears work.

Speaker 1

Any ideas?

Speaker 0

It travels.

Speaker 0

Time travels.

Speaker 0

The senses of our body put a signal into our brain to tell us that there's noise here.

Speaker 0

It falls into our ear from a very high cliff.

Speaker 1

I really don't know, but I know someone who does.

Speaker 1

Dr Viji Easwar.

Speaker 1

She's a scientist and an audiologist.

Speaker 1

That's a type of doctor who knows all about ears and how they hear sounds.

Speaker 1

That's her now.

Speaker 1

Hello, Dr Easwar.

Speaker 0

Hi, Dr Viji.

Speaker 0

Hi, Dr Viji.

Speaker 2

你好。

Hi.

Speaker 2

Ready for band practice?

Speaker 2

I've brought my violin.

Speaker 1

Yeah, but first, can you help us with some of our questions about sound and hearing?

Speaker 2

Of course.

Speaker 2

What can I help you with?

Speaker 0

How does sound go inside our ears?

Speaker 0

And how do we hear it?

Speaker 1

Is this flying across the room into our ear holes?

Speaker 2

Kind of.

Speaker 2

Air isn't empty.

Speaker 2

It's full of tiny, invisible particles.

Speaker 2

They are the ones carrying the sound.

Speaker 0

Like wind?

Speaker 2

The air isn't moving much.

Speaker 2

Those particles are a bit like a line of friends all nudging each other.

Speaker 2

No one moves from their spot, but the nudge goes all the way down the line.

Speaker 1

啊。

Ah.

Speaker 1

So when you make a sound, it makes the air particles bang into each other until it gets into your ears.

Speaker 2

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 2

The sound is energy moving through the air.

Speaker 2

We call it a sound wave.

Speaker 0

I don't get it.

Speaker 2

It's a little tricky.

Speaker 2

Sound waves are invisible, but you can see what's happening inside the ear.

Speaker 2

Why don't we imagine ourselves as sound waves?

Speaker 2

That way, we can follow the whole journey.

Speaker 0

I'm going to be glass breaking.

Speaker 1

哇。

Whoa.

Speaker 0

I'm going to be a dinosaur.

Speaker 1

Ooh, nice one.

Speaker 0

Thunder.

Speaker 0

I'm going to be a dog scratching on the grass.

Speaker 1

Oh, I don't know about that one.

Speaker 0

那Nish呢?

What about Nish?

Speaker 1

Ooh, what would I be?

Speaker 1

Fingernails on a chalkboard.

Speaker 0

No, that's a bad sound.

Speaker 1

I'll be a drum beat.

Speaker 2

I'm going to be a raindrop.

Speaker 2

Here we go.

Speaker 1

Woo-hoo.

Speaker 1

It's like we're flying.

Speaker 2

More like surfing.

Speaker 0

The truth is we are sound waves.

Speaker 2

对。

Yes.

Speaker 2

Sound travels as invisible waves through the air by the particles of air pushing and pulling on each other, one after another.

Speaker 1

Surf's up.

Speaker 1

耶!

Yew.

Speaker 2

If someone's nearby to hear it, the sound waves get funneled by the pinna.

Speaker 0

What's a pinna?

Speaker 2

The outside part of your ear.

Speaker 2

All those folds of skin and cartilage are there for a reason.

Speaker 1

To catch sound waves?

Speaker 2

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 1

Whoa, we're in the barrel of the ear bones.

Speaker 1

Sick.

Speaker 1

Precious.

Speaker 1

Yay.

Speaker 2

The folds and wrinkly bits of your ears are very important.

Speaker 2

They tell your brain where the sound is coming from, from above or below, in front or behind you.

Speaker 1

Our sound wave is going into the ear hole.

Speaker 1

等等!

Hang on!

Speaker 1

Oh, it's dark in here.

Speaker 0

And a little sticky.

Speaker 2

Welcome to the ear canal, the inside of an ear.

Speaker 1

Oh, so this sticky stuff must be-

Speaker 0

Ear wax

Speaker 1

Abort mission.

Speaker 1

We're stuck in the goo.

Speaker 2

别慌,Nij。

Don't panic, Nij.

Speaker 2

Ear wax is a good thing.

Speaker 0

I think they're for protecting your ear.

Speaker 2

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 2

Ear wax guards our ear canal by catching dust, dirt, sometimes even tiny bugs that might have accidentally crawled in.

Speaker 1

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 1

Thanks for those nightmares, Viji.

Speaker 2

But we're sound waves, remember?

Speaker 2

We don't get to stop here.

Speaker 2

The energy keeps pushing further inside until it bounces up against...

Speaker 1

Oof.

Speaker 1

We hit a dead end.

Speaker 2

Not exactly.

Speaker 2

This is the eardrum.

Speaker 2

It's one of the most important parts of the ear.

Speaker 0

Eardrum is a pretty funny name for something inside an ear.

Speaker 1

哇。

Whoa.

Speaker 1

I've never played a drum like this before.

Speaker 0

What does it do?

Speaker 0

Maybe it takes all of the sound and puts it inside your body so it can make a loud sound in your ear.

Speaker 2

对。

Yes.

Speaker 2

It's a thin but tough piece of skin stretched tightly across the ear canal.

Speaker 2

When a sound wave reaches it, the sound makes the eardrum vibrate.

Speaker 2

Those vibrations are passed on to the next part of the ear.

Speaker 1

And the wave keeps going?

Speaker 1

What's on the other side?

Speaker 0

Can we go into it and see?

Speaker 2

All right, sound waves, through you go.

Speaker 2

Now we are in the middle ear.

Speaker 1

Ugh, it's a little tight in here, and there's not much to see.

Speaker 2

There's three important things to see.

Speaker 2

The three smallest bones in the human body.

Speaker 1

Do they help me wiggle my ears?

Speaker 2

Not quite.

Speaker 2

The first bone is called the hammer, and it's attached to the eardrum.

Speaker 2

When sound waves make the eardrum move, the hammer moves, too.

Speaker 2

It's like the first runner in a relay race, passing the sound's energy to the next bone.

Speaker 1

Quick, let's give them a sound to pass.

Speaker 1

你好。

Hello.

Speaker 1

Oh, look, it's happening.

Speaker 0

The hammer is banging.

Speaker 0

Ba-boom, ba-boom, ba-boom, boom, boom.

Speaker 0

It's making the second bone move.

Speaker 2

And that's the anvil.

Speaker 2

Once the anvil starts moving, it passes the sound to the stirrup, the smallest bone of all three.

Speaker 1

Yeah, look, it's moving, too.

Speaker 1

It's smaller than a grain of rice.

Speaker 1

These bones are so tiny.

Speaker 0

Do we really need them?

Speaker 2

We sure do.

Speaker 2

The next part of the ear, the inner ear, is filled with fluid, and sound waves can lose a lot of energy getting into it.

Speaker 2

These tiny bones help by making them stronger before they enter the inner ear.

Speaker 1

So the bones bring the sound waves all together so they're strong enough to reach the next part of the ear.

Speaker 2

Get ready to go swimming.

Speaker 0

We are underwater.

Speaker 1

And this room is shaped like a spiral.

Speaker 0

Like a snail shell.

Speaker 2

This amazing part of your ear is called the cochlea.

Speaker 2

It does look like a snail shell, and it's filled with liquid.

Speaker 1

哇!

Whoa!

Speaker 1

Here comes a sound wave.

Speaker 0

Everything's wobbling.

Speaker 1

What's all that fuzzy stuff along the inside of the cochlea?

Speaker 0

It looks like seaweed.

Speaker 2

It does.

Speaker 2

They're hair cells, but they're not like the hair that grows on our heads.

Speaker 2

They're tiny sound sensors.

Speaker 1

There are thousands of them.

Speaker 1

It looks like the cochlea is covered in a fluffy mat.

Speaker 2

When sound waves travel through the ear, the mat moves like a wave, and the hair cells sway together with the mat.

Speaker 1

Look, they're doing it now.

Speaker 1

It's like they're dancing together.

Speaker 2

There are two kinds of hair cells, called inner hair cells and outer hair cells.

Speaker 0

What do they do?

Speaker 2

The inner hair cells are there to signal to the brain that a sound has arrived.

Speaker 2

Some of them respond to more squeaky, high sounds, and some of them respond to low, rumbly sounds.

Speaker 1

Look, the water's moving.

Speaker 2

Here comes another sound wave.

Speaker 1

Did that sound like a bike bell?

Speaker 2

A bright, high sound.

Speaker 2

High sounds make the bottom of the spiral move, and that triggers all the hair cells to wiggle.

Speaker 0

That sound is cool.

Speaker 2

Let's follow it.

Speaker 0

It's a cow.

Speaker 0

哞。

Moo.

Speaker 1

That's a low sound.

Speaker 2

A nice bassy sound like this makes the end of the spiral move and triggers the hair cells at the tip of the cochlea to wiggle.

Speaker 1

So, the inner hair cells are the sound sensors.

Speaker 1

What do all the other hairs do?

Speaker 1

There are thousands of them in here.

Speaker 2

The rest are amplifiers.

Speaker 2

They are like the helpful crowd making the wave bigger when the soft sound waves come in, even a whisper.

Speaker 2

But these are still just waves.

Speaker 2

Nothing's actually being heard yet.

Speaker 1

But we've been on such a long journey.

Speaker 1

Through the air, past the earwax, through the eardrum, across the tiniest bones, and into the cochlea.

Speaker 1

But nobody's actually heard anything yet?

Speaker 2

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 2

Until now, it's all been a lot of movement, a long chain of vibrations.

Speaker 2

But the inner hair cells do something else incredible.

Speaker 2

They turn the movement into tiny electrical messages.

Speaker 1

Look, the hairs are wiggling, and zapping.

Speaker 0

Zip, zip, zip.

Speaker 1

What's happening?

Speaker 0

They're signals to our brain.

Speaker 0

It sends them into your body so, so that it can let your body know that you're hearing something.

Speaker 2

对。

Yes.

Speaker 2

The hair cells are all connected to a long cable called the auditory nerve.

Speaker 2

Whenever the hair cells wiggle, it makes an electrical message that's sent down the cable.

Speaker 0

It's full of messages.

Speaker 1

Oh, we're in the brain.

Speaker 2

The brain is like a supercomputer.

Speaker 2

It's responding to all the different sound signals that come through the auditory nerve and many other stations along the way.

Speaker 2

This is the brain.

Speaker 2

I'm receiving signals from the left and the right ears.

Speaker 1

Whoa, the brain gets signals from both ears.

Speaker 2

当然。

Of course.

Speaker 2

You can hear different things from both ears at the same time.

Speaker 0

Cool, but sometimes you don't know where the sound comes from.

Speaker 2

So your brain needs to ask a lot of questions very quickly.

Speaker 2

Which ear heard the sound first?

Speaker 2

Which ear heard it louder?

Speaker 2

All those clues help your brain work out where the sound's coming from.

Speaker 2

There's a dog on the left.

Speaker 2

There's a magpie above.

Speaker 2

Let's check in with memory to see if it's swooping season.

Speaker 2

We might need to move that up to a high alert status.

Speaker 2

Important sound coming from behind.

Speaker 2

And then your brain asks something even more important.

Speaker 2

Should I pay attention?

Speaker 1

That sounds like an old fridge.

Speaker 2

Yep, that sort of stuff is what we call background noise, so your brain has decided it's not important.

Speaker 2

You almost don't even notice it.

Speaker 2

Your brain is constantly deciding which information matters the most.

Speaker 1

Yeah, otherwise, you'd be trying to think about every sound all the time.

Speaker 0

That would be very confusing.

Speaker 3

It would be stressful.

Speaker 0

I could never fall asleep if I heard all that.

Speaker 2

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 2

Your brain helps you focus on what's important.

Speaker 0

The sound of fire alarms.

Speaker 3

对。

Way.

Speaker 3

Or a fire truck or a police car.

Speaker 1

Those are definitely sounds to pay attention to.

Speaker 2

Or like someone calling your name, or a car horn, or your favorite song.

Speaker 1

Like the one we're supposed to be practicing at band practice.

Speaker 1

Come on.

Speaker 0

We're back.

Speaker 1

Thanks for showing us how hearing works, Dr. Viji.

Speaker 3

谢谢你,Viji。

Thank you, Viji.

Speaker 1

And helping us surf the sound waves.

Speaker 1

That's actually a good song title.

Speaker 1

I should write that down.

Speaker 2

No problem.

Speaker 2

Ready to play?

Speaker 1

One, two.

Speaker 1

One, two, three, four.

Speaker 1

So Mackenzie, Tom, and Harry, all sound is vibration.

Speaker 3

It moves through sound waves.

Speaker 1

Sound waves move by bumping and squeezing tiny particles, sending the vibration outwards until it gets caught in the pinna of your ear.

Speaker 3

In the foldy bits.

Speaker 0

It's like a net.

Speaker 1

The vibrations move inside your ear.

Speaker 0

They don't get stuck in earwax.

Speaker 1

And bounce against the thin piece of skin called the eardrum.

Speaker 3

Boom, boom, boom.

Speaker 3

Boom, boom.

Speaker 1

The eardrum moves the sound across the three smallest bones in your body.

Speaker 3

The hammer, the anvil, and the stirrup.

Speaker 1

Until the vibration makes it to the cochlea, your inner ear.

Speaker 3

It's shaped like a snail.
