你好。

Hello.

Speaker 1

我叫Nidge。

My name is Nidge.

Speaker 1

And today on Imagine This, I'm riding my bike to the beach.

Speaker 1

Just a few more hills to go.

Speaker 0

That is faster than can go.

Speaker 0

Ledge,

Ledge, hurry up or I'll need an ice cream to get the rest of the way up.

Speaker 0

The car's going way faster than you, Ledge.

Speaker 1

Oh, I know.

Speaker 1

It's not fair.

Speaker 1

Why are they so much faster?

Speaker 0

There are four of them a car and only two on a bike.

Speaker 0

Cars have engines and bike stones.

Speaker 0

They have more power.

Speaker 1

A lot of you have been wondering about cars.

Speaker 0

I'm Frankie, and I would like to know how the cars work.

Speaker 0

My name's Timothy, and I'll take tonight how cars work.

Speaker 0

Hi, Ned.

Speaker 0

My name is Levi, and I'm five years old, and I want to know how do different types of cars get their power.

Speaker 0

My name is Arija, and I want to know how do engines make cars move.

Speaker 0

Hi.

I wanna know how a hybrid car works.

Speaker 0

My name's Sam.

Speaker 0

This is my question.

Speaker 0

How do vehicles go?

Speaker 1

I think we're gonna have to talk to an expert.

Speaker 1

Shawn.

Speaker 1

Just the man I wanted to talk to.

Speaker 2

Hey, need do you need a lift or maybe an ambulance?

Speaker 1

I'm okay.

Speaker 1

Just gotta feel the burn, you know.

Speaker 2

Okay.

Speaker 2

I'll meet you at the top of the hill.

Speaker 0

Gonna need you almost there.

Speaker 0

Woo hoo.

Speaker 0

We can do this.

Speaker 0

Oh, let's go.

Speaker 1

呼——

Phew.

Speaker 1

Made it.

Speaker 1

Thanks for the support.

Speaker 1

Everyone, this is Professor Shawn Kook.

Speaker 1

He leads the Engine Research Lab at UNSW, and he knows a lot about cars.

Speaker 2

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 0

Shawn, we want to know how engines makes cars work.

Speaker 1

And why they're so much faster than my bike.

Speaker 2

I can definitely help you with that.

Speaker 2

First, let's take a look at engines that use petrol or diesel.

Speaker 1

I feel some imagining coming on.

Speaker 1

Pop the bonnet.

Speaker 0

So where are we?

Speaker 1

It's we're inside a metal can.

Speaker 2

We sort of are.

Speaker 2

We call it a cylinder.

Speaker 2

We're just imagining here, of course.

Speaker 2

In real life, we'd never fit inside a car cylinder.

Speaker 2

They are just the size of a tin of tomatoes.

Speaker 0

It's empty.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

This is what a baked bean must feel like.

Speaker 2

And this platform we are standing on is called a piston.

Speaker 2

This is the beating heart of a car's engine.

Speaker 0

What does a piston do?

Speaker 2

Pistons move very fast.

Speaker 2

Let's take a look how things work in slow motion.

Speaker 0

Woah.

Speaker 0

Things are starting to move.

Speaker 0

Everything is vibrating.

Speaker 2

At the top of the cylinder, there are two vents.

Speaker 2

Can you see the two openings up there?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Two small air vents.

Speaker 2

One of the vents is for things to come in.

Speaker 0

What kind of thing?

Speaker 1

The piston's moving down.

Speaker 2

By moving down, the piston makes more room inside the cylinder.

Speaker 2

This sucks air and fuel inside.

Speaker 1

Is that petrol?

Speaker 0

Hold your mind.

Speaker 0

That stinks.

Speaker 2

Yes.

Speaker 2

Thankfully, we're just imagining.

Speaker 2

You should never get this close to petrol diesel or any kind of fuel.

Speaker 2

It's dangerous and can catch on fire.

Speaker 0

It could go kaboo.

Speaker 2

Which is exactly what's about to happen.

Speaker 1

啥?

What?

Speaker 1

现在?

Now?

Speaker 2

Once the cylinder is full of air and fuel, the vents at the top close off, sealing everything in, and then the piston moves back up.

Speaker 1

什么?

What?

Speaker 1

There's no room.

Speaker 2

Exactly.

Speaker 2

We need to make this tight space even tighter so the pressure builds and builds.

Speaker 0

What makes it do the explosion?

Speaker 0

Maybe there's some TNT in there.

Speaker 2

Inside the diesel engine, this pressure alone is enough to cause a small explosion.

Speaker 2

But with the petrol, you need a spark.

Speaker 1

A spark around all

Speaker 2

this fuel?

Speaker 2

是的。

Yep.

Speaker 2

Woah.

Speaker 2

But the explosion slams the piston back down to the bottom of the cylinder.

Speaker 2

那

That

Speaker 1

was quite a bang.

Speaker 0

It's all smoky in here.

Speaker 2

The second vent opens now to let out the gases from the explosion.

Speaker 2

The fuel got used up.

Speaker 2

Now all that's left

Speaker 1

is stinky exhaust beams.

Speaker 0

Is the software coming out of the back of the car?

Speaker 1

等等。

Hang on.

Speaker 1

The piston's coming back up.

Speaker 2

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 2

And then the whole thing happens again.

Speaker 2

Piston moves down, pulling fuel and air inside

Speaker 1

the cylinder.

Speaker 1

Then the piston moves up, squeezes everything together really tight.

Speaker 0

Then boom.

Speaker 0

The explosion.

Speaker 1

And the piston shoots back down again.

Speaker 2

Before coming back up to release the used gases out of the cylinder.

Speaker 2

This happens over and over again, powering the car.

Speaker 0

How many times?

Speaker 2

Thousands of times every minute.

Speaker 2

Woah.

Speaker 2

That's a lot of times.

Speaker 2

You can add more cylinders to increase the power of the engine.

Speaker 2

A lot of cars have four cylinders lined up in a row.

Speaker 2

Some cars have a V six engine, which means it has six cylinders in a V shape.

Speaker 2

And some race cars have eight or even 12 cylinders.

Speaker 1

Do faster cars have more cylinders?

Speaker 2

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 2

But not always.

Speaker 2

Formula one cars are super fast, and they use v six engines, which means

Speaker 0

Six cylinders.

Speaker 2

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

It goes up and down.

Speaker 0

Up and down again and again and again really fast, and it pushes the smoke out.

Speaker 1

But how do the pistons going up and down and the fuel exploding in the cylinders make the car drive?

Speaker 2

Let's climb out of here and take a look.

Speaker 2

The flat base of the piston has a pole attached to it.

Speaker 2

It is called a connecting rod.

Speaker 1

What's that long bar it's connected to at the bottom?

Speaker 2

It's called a crankshaft.

Speaker 1

Let's slide down.

Speaker 1

Jump onto the crankshaft.

Speaker 2

Keep your balance.

Speaker 1

We're going round in circles now?

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

这个

The

Speaker 2

up and down movement of the piston gets turned into round and round movement in the crankshaft.

Speaker 2

This is what makes the wheel spin in circles.

Speaker 1

Oh, I know that song.

Speaker 1

The wheels on the eight cylinder piston engine go round and round.

Speaker 0

It's like a Ferris wheel because that goes up and down.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And riding a circle.

Speaker 1

Hang on.

Speaker 1

I'm getting dizzy.

Speaker 0

Don't get car sick, Mitch.

Speaker 1

You mean crankshaft sick?

Speaker 2

Follow me to the transmission.

Speaker 2

Hop over the flywheel.

Speaker 2

Balance across the drive shaft and here we are.

Speaker 1

That's better.

Speaker 2

We can catch our breath in here.

Speaker 0

Where are we?

Speaker 2

This is called the transmission box.

Speaker 2

It takes all the power from the explosions and sends it to the wheels in a smooth and controlled way.

Speaker 2

How do you mean?

Speaker 2

Those explosions are like short burst of energy, but we don't want our cars to bounce down the road in a thousand little hops.

Speaker 2

Do we?

Speaker 2

对。

No.

Speaker 0

The car go boom boom boom boom.

Speaker 0

What's happening?

Speaker 2

The gears are changing.

Speaker 0

The car is slowing down.

Speaker 2

That means the transmission is moving less power to the wheels.

Speaker 2

It does that by choosing a lower gear so the wheels of the car spin slower or a higher gear to go faster.

Speaker 0

That turns the wheels and that's how the car goes?

Speaker 1

I have gears on my bike too.

Speaker 2

And they do the same thing.

Speaker 2

Gears control how fast the wheels spin, but car wheels can spin much faster than your bike because the engine is more powerful than your legs.

Speaker 1

Oh, that's okay.

Speaker 1

I still love my bike.

Speaker 2

And that's basically it.

Speaker 2

How engines make cars move.

Speaker 2

They turn the vertical up and down energy of those explosions into circular motion making the wheels turn.

Speaker 0

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 0

Cool.

Speaker 0

That's amazing.

Speaker 2

好了。

Alright.

Speaker 2

Time to hold your nose.

Speaker 0

How come?

Speaker 0

Why?

Speaker 2

We are going out of the tailpipe at the back of the car.

Speaker 0

Ew, gross.

Speaker 0

What is this stuff?

Speaker 2

After a car uses up its fuel, a mix of stinky gases come out of the exhaust.

Speaker 0

That can probably just affect people and animals.

Speaker 0

It's very dirty, so it might make the plant die because they can't have oil.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Too much in the air creates what we call the greenhouse effect.

Speaker 2

It makes the planet warmer and contributes to climate change.

Speaker 0

That's not good.

Speaker 2

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 2

It's a big problem.

Speaker 2

That's why we are working on future engines that use fuels that are much cleaner than petrol or diesel.

Speaker 0

What about strawberries?

Speaker 2

That'd be cool.

Speaker 0

Timbite bangs.

Speaker 1

That'd be explosive.

Speaker 0

Fireworks.

Speaker 1

Oh, that'd cause a bigger bang.

Speaker 2

You sound like scientists already.

Speaker 1

Are there really gonna be clean fuels one day?

Speaker 2

Green hydrogen is one example of a possible clean fuel.

Speaker 2

We can even use fuels made from waste as well.

Speaker 2

We also have electric motors.

Speaker 2

等等。

Hang on.

Speaker 2

I think I hear an electric car coming now.

Speaker 1

Are we inside an electric car now?

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

Where's all the engine stuff?

Speaker 1

It's basically empty in here.

Speaker 2

Car engine that uses fuel have thousands of parts all working together under the hood.

Speaker 2

Thousands?

Speaker 2

Electric cars only have about 25 parts.

Speaker 1

Woah.

Speaker 0

Electric motors don't have the pump.

Speaker 0

You just need like a battery.

Speaker 0

It would have electric going in it.

Speaker 2

In here, there's no explosions, explosions, no pistons, no cylinders,

Speaker 1

and no stinky gases going in or coming out.

Speaker 2

It's a much simpler design.

Speaker 0

They're better for the environment.

Speaker 0

Because they don't have fumes.

Speaker 0

We have to put electricity in the car.

Speaker 0

So how does it work?

Speaker 2

The motor is made of a large spinning magnet connected to a battery.

Speaker 0

And magnets make the wheels spin?

Speaker 2

对。

Yes.

Speaker 2

As the car speeds up, the battery sends more electricity to the magnet, making the motor spin faster.

Speaker 0

Where are the gears?

Speaker 2

There's only one gear doing all the work.

Speaker 0

Look, it's going backwards.

Speaker 0

What's happening?

Speaker 2

Clever, The car isn't going backwards.

Speaker 2

The car is slowing down, so the system reverses the flow of electricity, sending the leftover power from the wheel back to the battery as it slows down.

Speaker 1

Wow.

Speaker 1

That's pretty clever.

Speaker 2

And at night, you just plug them in to charge the battery, just like mom and dad's phone.

Speaker 0

Shawn, what are hybrid cars?

Speaker 2

Hybrid cars have both a petrol engine and an electric motor working together.

Speaker 2

It can run on electricity at low speed, and when we go faster, the petrol engine kicks in to help out the motor.

Speaker 1

Like teamwork.

Speaker 2

That's much better for the planet than using a petrol alone.

Speaker 2

Can you hear that?

Speaker 2

I think we're at

Speaker 1

海边。

the beach.

Speaker 1

Thanks for the ride, Shawn.

Speaker 2

No worries.

Speaker 2

Let's go get an ice cream.

Speaker 1

Oh, I'm gonna get rocky road.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

So, Timothy, Frankie, Levi, Arija, Connor and Rory, inside a car engine, a mix of air and fuel are pulled into a small cylinder.

Speaker 0

There are four, six, 12 cylinders.

Speaker 1

Then a piston squeezes the mixture tighter and tighter until

Speaker 0

火花。

A spark.

Speaker 0

The explosion

Speaker 1

pushes the piston back down before coming back up to start the cycle again.

Speaker 0

Thousands of times every minute.

Speaker 1

This up and down movement of the piston is turned into round and round movement through the crankshafts, making the wheels spin and the car move.

Speaker 1

All these explosions in the engine create gases that come out the exhaust.

Speaker 0

Hold your nose.

Speaker 1

These gases can cause pollution.

Speaker 0

It's bad for the environment.

Speaker 0

That stinks.

Speaker 1

In electric cars, a battery sends electricity to a large spinning magnet and this makes the wheel spin.

Speaker 0

The motor is a magnet.

Speaker 1

Hybrid cars use both.

Speaker 0

Like teamwork.

Speaker 1

Scientists are working hard to make cars cleaner for the environment with different fuels and different engines.

Speaker 1

Things are changing fast.

Speaker 1

Who knows what or how we'll be driving in the future.

Speaker 0

Alien spaceships that can fly.

Speaker 0

Like a new backflips.
