And today on Imagine This, we're painting.

Speaker 2

画画。

Painting.

Speaker 3

I'll be painting a dinosaur.

Speaker 1

I love that.

Speaker 3

I'm painting a house with red and brown.

Speaker 1

That looks great.

Speaker 3

I'm painting myself, and I'm using my fingers.

Speaker 1

Oh, brilliant.

Speaker 2

I'm painting a shell with pink, purple, and blue.

Speaker 1

Awesome colors.

Speaker 1

I'm gonna paint a big tree.

Speaker 1

Oh, no. There's no green for the leaves.

Speaker 2

You can mix blue and yellow and that makes green.

Speaker 1

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 1

Thanks.

Speaker 1

What other colors can you make?

Speaker 3

You can mix yellow and red to make orange.

Speaker 2

White and the colors together, and it turns lighter.

Speaker 1

Great.

Speaker 1

Now I think about it, we've had lots of questions about paint.

Speaker 3

Hi.

Speaker 3

I am Ben, and I'm five years old.

Speaker 3

And I want to know how is paint made.

Speaker 2

你好。

Hello.

Speaker 2

And my name is called Grace.

Speaker 2

And I'm five years old.

Speaker 2

And I want to know what is paint made of?

Speaker 2

Hello, Imagine This.

Speaker 2

My name's Yuki.

Speaker 2

And I want to know: How do the colors get into colored paints?

Speaker 3

Maybe you smash up plants that are the color you want and then you put it in.

Speaker 3

Yes, by water and food coloring.

Speaker 1

I know where we should go to learn about paint.

Speaker 2

An art studio.

Speaker 3

Paint factory.

Speaker 3

Um, an art gallery.

Speaker 1

Yeah, the art gallery.

Speaker 1

Let's go there.

Speaker 2

哇。

Whoa.

Speaker 2

It's cool in here.

Speaker 3

It has lots of shelves and paintings on the wall.

Speaker 3

It's colorful.

Speaker 1

Yeah, it really is.

Speaker 3

I like the sound my feet make.

Speaker 1

Can you hear the echo?

Speaker 2

Are the paintings sleeping?

Speaker 1

没有。

No.

Speaker 2

Then why are we whispering?

Speaker 1

I don't know.

Speaker 1

It's just something you do in art galleries.

Speaker 0

Welcome to the National Gallery of Australia.

Speaker 1

Oh, hi, Jocelyn.

Speaker 2

Hi, Jocelyn.

Speaker 3

Hi, Jocelyn.

Speaker 3

Do you work here?

Speaker 0

Yes, I'm a paintings conservator.

Speaker 2

What's that?

Speaker 0

It's a bit like a doctor for paintings.

Speaker 0

I look for cracks, flaking paint, any signs of damage.

Speaker 0

If the paintings need restoring, I help fix them.

Speaker 0

And if they need it, I clean them.

Speaker 3

You give the paintings a bath?

Speaker 0

Not exactly.

Speaker 0

Come on, I'll show you.

Speaker 0

Uh, see this painting here.

Speaker 3

It's a painting of a stormy sky and a grassy meadow.

Speaker 2

Look at those dark, stormy clouds.

Speaker 0

It does look dark, doesn't it?

Speaker 0

This painting has become a little dull over the years.

Speaker 0

But watch this.

Speaker 0

If I carefully clean a tiny part of it...

Speaker 2

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 3

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 3

It got brighter.

Speaker 1

哇。

Whoa.

Speaker 2

Color changed.

Speaker 1

By cleaning it-

Speaker 1

... it turned the gray sky-

Speaker 0

That bit of gray sky just turned-

Speaker 1

... into a blue one

Speaker 0

... blue.

Speaker 3

The sky is different.

Speaker 3

It's a nice and sunny day.

Speaker 0

Often the colors are still there.

Speaker 0

They're just hiding underneath years and years of dirt.

Speaker 0

Cleaning a painting can feel a little bit like helping it wake up again.

Speaker 1

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 1

Who knew there was a whole other painting underneath this one?

Speaker 0

Paintings have stories, not just in the picture they're showing, but the story of the paint itself.

Speaker 1

We wanna know about paint.

Speaker 0

I thought you might.

Speaker 1

Can you hear that?

Speaker 1

Jocelyn, is that painting supposed to be glowing?

Speaker 3

The paint's moving.

Speaker 0

Yeah, I can see it, too.

Speaker 1

Are we imagining already?

Speaker 1

Here we go.

Speaker 2

啊。

Ah.

Speaker 1

啊。

Ah.

Speaker 1

Is everybody okay?

Speaker 3

I landed on something squishy.

Speaker 3

My shoes are all blue.

Speaker 0

I think that's because you're standing in the river paint.

Speaker 0

Try coming this way, into the grass.

Speaker 3

Now my shoes are green.

Speaker 1

等等。

Hang on.

Speaker 1

Are we inside the painting?

Speaker 3

It is, like, wet and stuff.

Speaker 3

It's sticky, but it's nice.

Speaker 2

Look at those trees.

Speaker 1

They're all made of tiny brush strokes.

Speaker 1

And the clouds look like somebody painted them with a giant paintbrush.

Speaker 0

Someone did.

Speaker 3

Everything's made of paint.

Speaker 0

Layers and layers of it.

Speaker 0

How about we move through the layers to learn about how paint was made throughout history?

Speaker 0

Let's peel back this patch of grass, like a trapdoor.

Speaker 1

哇。

Whoa.

Speaker 1

This painting goes back a long way.

Speaker 0

People have been painting a really, really long time.

Speaker 1

Let's climb down.

Speaker 3

This is a different kind of echo.

Speaker 1

We're not in a gallery anymore, or on a canvas.

Speaker 1

This is stone.

Speaker 1

We're in a cave.

Speaker 0

A cave painting.

Speaker 3

These are, like, old, old, old, old paintings.

Speaker 3

I can see some people dancing.

Speaker 2

A snake and fire.

Speaker 3

Those types of paintings are original paintings.

Speaker 0

We've gone back tens of thousands of years, to the earliest form of paint.

Speaker 3

Ochre?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Ochre is a naturally colored type of rock.

Speaker 0

It's actually a type of clay.

Speaker 0

Some ochres are yellow, some are red, some are brown.

Speaker 2

So paint comes from the ground?

Speaker 0

Sometimes.

Speaker 0

If the earth contains the right minerals, it can make beautiful colors.

Speaker 0

For thousands of years, First Nations peoples across what we now call Australia have used ochres in art and cultural practices, painting on rock, bark, on their bodies, and special objects.

Speaker 3

You can paint it on your cheeks and tummy and stuff.

Speaker 1

It looks incredible How can you turn rocks into paint?

Speaker 0

It's ground up into a very fine powder that creates the color.

Speaker 0

We call it pigment, but pigment on its own won't stick to these cave walls.

Speaker 3

You mush them up and get them wet.

Speaker 1

Yeah, you need to add something sticky.

Speaker 2

They collected some sap from some plants and they stirred it all together.

Speaker 0

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 0

We call that the binder.

Speaker 0

When you mix pigment, the color, with a binder, the sticky stuff, you get paint.

Speaker 0

This early ochre paint used binders like sticky tree sap or resin from spinifex grass.

Speaker 0

But there are so many different options.

Speaker 1

It looks pretty different to the paint we have at home these days.

Speaker 0

Well, ochre is still being painted with today, but yes, there are many paints available now.

Speaker 0

Let's keep moving through.

Speaker 0

See that light shining through the top of the cave?

Speaker 1

Yeah, I see it, up there.

Speaker 2

Yeah, it's a hole in the rocks.

Speaker 0

That's where we're headed.

Speaker 1

Careful.

Speaker 1

One at a time.

Speaker 1

Yeah, through you go.

Speaker 1

Whoa, where are we?

Speaker 3

Wow, it looks so messy.

Speaker 1

Lots of colorful things in jars.

Speaker 3

I see a bucket of paint.

Speaker 1

Look at all these tools and canvas.

Speaker 1

I think we're in some kind of workshop.

Speaker 4

Where's my ultramarine?

Speaker 1

Ugh, who's that?

Speaker 0

I think we're in an artist's workshop.

Speaker 0

By the look of things, this is the Renaissance, about 600 years ago.

Speaker 0

There were no supermarkets or paint tubes.

Speaker 0

People didn't buy the paint, they had to make it themselves.

Speaker 3

Um, I think they got paint from nature.

Speaker 4

Where is my ultramarine?

Speaker 0

I think he's talking to you, Nij.

Speaker 1

Me?

Speaker 4

群青。

Ultramarine.

Speaker 1

啊。

Ah.

Speaker 1

Oh, okay.

Speaker 1

Jocelyn, the guy just handed me these blue rocks.

Speaker 2

Wow, those blue rocks are pretty.

Speaker 1

What should I do?

Speaker 0

You grind them.

Speaker 0

Before artists could paint, someone had to make the paint.

Speaker 0

Often, that job belonged to the apprentices.

Speaker 0

I think that's you today, Nij.

Speaker 4

Grind.

Speaker 4

Finer.

Speaker 4

I need it finer.

Speaker 1

I'm trying.

Speaker 1

Woo, this is hard work.

Speaker 1

Way harder than squeezing a tube.

Speaker 1

What is this blue stuff?

Speaker 0

It's called lapis lazuli.

Speaker 0

It's a rock that was ground into one of the world's most famous blue pigments, ultramarine.

Speaker 3

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 3

It must have taken heaps of rocks to paint a whole sky.

Speaker 0

Yes, and it was incredibly expensive.

Speaker 0

It took a long time to extract all the blue from the rock.

Speaker 3

So you put them in a wet ingredient, and then they would dissolve, and then you would get the color.

Speaker 2

Maybe, like, they put them in water and somehow the blue comes off them.

Speaker 3

Maybe you mush them up.

Speaker 2

Grind them up.

Speaker 0

They didn't just grind it, they mixed it with beeswax, made it into a dough, and then soaked it for weeks to draw out the blue color.

Speaker 3

Wait, did he just crack an egg into the paint?

Speaker 1

I just finished grinding that.

Speaker 0

Egg yolk was one of the most popular binders back in medieval times.

Speaker 0

Remember, paint needs two things, pigment and...

Speaker 1

Binder.

Speaker 3

Binder.

Speaker 0

The egg holds all of those tiny grains of pigment together.

Speaker 3

Can I paint my bedroom with scrambled eggs?

Speaker 0

Please don't.

Speaker 0

Egg was the most popular binder in medieval times, but then linseed oil became more popular during the Renaissance.

Speaker 1

How come?

Speaker 0

Oil coats all of those tiny pigment particles really well.

Speaker 0

It makes the colors look richer and deeper.

Speaker 0

Oil paint completely changed what artists could do.

Speaker 1

There's some cool stuff in this workshop, jars of flowers and seeds, seashells.

Speaker 1

Oh, bones.

Speaker 1

What are these for?

Speaker 0

Some black pigments were made from burnt animal bones, and artists called that paint bone black.

Speaker 3

Why are there all those bugs in a jar?

Speaker 0

Because one very famous red color called carmine came from these tiny insects called cochineal.

Speaker 3

Paint made from bugs?

Speaker 3

I don't think I'd want to be an artist at this time.

Speaker 0

And the mucus glands of those sea snails over there make tyrian purple.

Speaker 1

Oh, don't make me grind snails.

Speaker 3

咦。

Ew.

Speaker 3

They look-

Speaker 1

A cow?

Speaker 1

I don't even want to know.

Speaker 3

Maybe it's paint made with milk.

Speaker 0

Well, there is a paint made from milk, but I don't think that's what this cow is for.

Speaker 0

There was once a color called Indian yellow.

Speaker 0

It was made with the urine of cows that had been fed mango leaves.

Speaker 3

Cow wee?

Speaker 1

Ew.

Speaker 3

Ew.

Speaker 3

Yuck.

Speaker 1

Ugh, that's it.

Speaker 1

Apprenticeship over.

Speaker 3

So paint came from rocks and plants?

Speaker 3

And bugs and bones.

Speaker 3

And cow wee?

Speaker 0

People experimented for thousands of years with almost anything that could make color.

Speaker 0

Even parts of Egyptian mummies were crushed up and used as paint.

Speaker 1

No way.

Speaker 0

It was called mummy brown.

Speaker 1

So paint came from rocks and plants-

Speaker 3

How do they like paint now?

Speaker 1

... and bugs and bones and cow wee?

Speaker 0

Today, many of the colorful pigments are made in laboratories instead of being collected from nature.

Speaker 0

That means artists can have colors that are brighter, cheaper, and much safer.

Speaker 1

Yeah, and better for the bugs.

Speaker 2

So people aren't smashing rocks and bugs anymore?

Speaker 0

Not for most everyday paints.

Speaker 0

These days, it's mostly made from chemicals in a lab.

Speaker 0

Want to go see?

Speaker 1

Quick, let's crawl through this window while the master's not looking.

Speaker 3

We're in a paint factory.

Speaker 1

Big buckets of colorful powder are being poured into...

Speaker 1

Is that a big blender?

Speaker 3

It looks like a milkshake maker.

Speaker 0

It's a paint mixer But it works in the same way.

Speaker 0

The pigment, that colorful powder, goes in with a binder.

Speaker 0

But instead of plant sap or egg, today's binders that get mixed in a factory come from plastics or synthetic oils.

Speaker 1

So even though the recipe has changed, the basic idea is the same.

Speaker 1

You need something colorful, that's the pigment, and something sticky to hold it together, the binder.

Speaker 0

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 0

Here in the factory, once it's all mixed up and the color's just right, they squirt it into tins, pots, or tubes.

Speaker 3

哇!

Whoa!

Speaker 0

You could try making your own paints at home.

Speaker 0

Maybe not Indian yellow, but you could see what you get when you mix some colorful pigments with PVA glue.

Speaker 3

I would do green out of green apple skin.

Speaker 3

Get berries, like red berries to make red, and we smoosh the red berries up.

Speaker 1

Oh, yeah, like red onion or dragon fruit.

Speaker 0

Yeah, or maybe turmeric for yellow.

Speaker 1

You could come up with your own special color.

Speaker 0

Come on, let's get back to the gallery.

Speaker 3

We're back.

Speaker 1

These paintings all look different now.

Speaker 0

Do they?

Speaker 1

Well, I guess they're not really different.

Speaker 1
