Welcome back everybody to investing experts podcast.

Speaker 0

I am here once again with Amrita Roy and Uttam Dey, a married pair of analysts we have at Seeking...

Speaker 0

We are fortunate enough to have at Seeking Alpha.

Speaker 0

We have been fortunate enough to have on the podcast before, but it's been too long to be sure.

Speaker 0

Uttam and Amrita, welcome back to the show.

Speaker 0

Welcome back to the podcast.

Speaker 0

It's great to have you.

Speaker 0

If you wanna just start, and I will let you decide who goes first.

Speaker 0

If you wanna just lay the groundwork, how you're looking at this market, it's 10/12/2026, how you're thinking about tech and the areas that you're focused on, I'd love to start there.

Speaker 1

好的。

Sure.

Speaker 1

I'll get it started.

Speaker 1

So I'll I'll I'll provide

Speaker 0

一个

a

Speaker 1

broad overview, like a macro overview first, and then we can, like, slowly start start drilling into the key areas of tech that we believe will benefit in the coming months and quarters.

Speaker 1

So the S and P five hundred finally managed to create an all time high last week.

Speaker 1

I think it is still sort of hovering around an all time high even though, you know, markets are slightly low to flat today.

Speaker 1

But the interesting bit is that it is all AI, all tech that actually did the work for the S and P five hundred to create that all time high.

Speaker 1

So the AI trade led the way while other other sectors like financials, industrials, small cap, you name it, they pretty much did not participate at all.

Speaker 1

And the strange bit in all of this is that even though the AI trade took the S and P 500 to all time highs, SMH, the Van X Semiconductor ETF, which is probably one of the most used and one of the best proxies for the AI trade, has not made a new all time high.

Speaker 1

So there are a couple of contradictions we are dealing with over here.

Speaker 1

And meanwhile on the macroeconomic front we have the ten year yields that are at the century highs pretty much, a rough figure.

Speaker 1

Dollar is at an all time...

Speaker 1

Dollar is pretty strong at the moment.

Speaker 1

Oil is not...

Speaker 1

Is refusing to move lower beneath the $88 per barrel level, which is like reinforcing the higher for longer narrative and also worsening liquidity conditions.

Speaker 1

And when liquidity conditions worsen, that usually calls for a pullback.

Speaker 1

Except this time, we are dealing with a midterm election month, quarter, where we're looking at like history, October and November during mid...

Speaker 1

During a midterm tends to be the strongest months in a year.

Speaker 1

So you have a bunch of contradictions that are playing out in the market right now.

Speaker 1

So the way that we see this playing out is that currently what we are seeing is that money is rotating back into tech.

Speaker 1

Like since June...

Speaker 1

From June till...

Speaker 1

Up until now, we saw money rotate out of tech into, you know, your reflationary sectors and also, software, for instance.

Speaker 1

And now finally, I think starting late last month, money is moving back into tech.

Speaker 1

Yes, breadth is poor, but still money is moving back into tech.

Speaker 1

I see a lot of charts going around in the internet where people are drawing parallels between the price action of the S and P five hundred versus the .com bubble.

Speaker 1

I just personally don't believe that we are in a bubble at all, right now at least.

Speaker 1

And that's because valuations are pretty stable, low.

Speaker 1

Earnings are very strong.

Speaker 1

When we look at AI revenue, it is doubling every seven point two months at the moment.

Speaker 1

Supply chain is extremely constrained.

Speaker 1

I mean, at CPU lead times, which have gotten quite tight at the moment.

Speaker 1

AMD, Intel are increasing their CPU prices.

Speaker 1

AWS, Nebius, you name it, they're increasing their GPU prices.

Speaker 1

So yeah, this is a world where demand is extremely strong and supply is still trying hard to catch up.

Speaker 1

So I don't think we're in any kind of bubble territory.

Speaker 1

Having said that, given the sort of the midterm support or the floor that we have, I do think that, you know, there's probably still a marginal high left for for the S and P 500.

Speaker 1

So I think we probably will still move higher from here, possibly 8,000, 8,100.

Speaker 1

But I am, we are expecting probably a five to 15% pullback in the index after that, depending on how the liquidity conditions play out.

Speaker 1

And I have been talking a lot in through all my macro posts on Seeking Alpha as to how we are navigating this scenario in the...

Speaker 1

How we plan to navigate this scenario in the coming months by balancing our cash in the portfolio and raising cash and selectively investing in certain high conviction names.

Speaker 1

There is still probably a one to 2% left in the S and P 500 followed by a 5% to 15% pullback depending on liquidity conditions.

Speaker 1

As AI investors ourselves, we don't think that the underlying fundamentals are worsening by any means.

Speaker 1

We do need favorable liquidity conditions for sure.

Speaker 1

So we will be very bullish in that pullback and view that as a tremendous long term setup.

Speaker 1

So that's sort of, I think, where we see tech currently and playing out in the coming maybe quarter or so.

Speaker 1

And within that, yeah, let's let's...

Speaker 1

We can we can get into sort of the areas.

Speaker 1

I know agentic AI is huge right now with with Meta Muse launching last month.

Speaker 1

Dots……

And then OpenAI Dots...

Speaker 1

Gemini……

OpenAI releasing Dots, which is their personal AI agent, and then Google launching Google Gemini...

Speaker 1

Or Gemini agent last last week only.

Speaker 1

The agentic AI space is getting really heated up, and the lines between personal and...

Speaker 1

Consumer and business AI or business agent is blurring.

Speaker 1

You have companies like OpenAI and Gemini or Google who are approaching it from the enterprise angle, whereas Meta is approaching it from...

Speaker 1

Know, by keeping Meta Muse broadly free and getting it in the hands of as many people as possible to like drive adoption and sort of attack the consumer space.

Speaker 1

And as a result, there are lots of beneficiaries that I think will come about, especially within the hyperscaler complex, within cybersecurity, and even in the whole AI infrastructure space.

Speaker 2

Amrita just citing did a pretty good overview about, you know, what's been going on at a at a macro level standpoint.

Speaker 2

The only thing that I would add when I'm trying to get vertical within, you know, just the AI space is that a lot of that noise that we see, that we are seeing in the macro level is kind of probably triggering some kind of fears that is, you know, that's just getting funneled down into, let's say, something like debt or something like special purpose vehicle debt.

Speaker 2

That's one area.

Speaker 2

The other area is, hey, wait, maybe the whole memory space is is getting it's it's getting inflationary for for data centers.

Speaker 2

And that's kind of crowding a lot of the narrative as well as swinging it from side to side.

Speaker 2

That's making it, you know, really difficult and challenging for certain investors.

Speaker 2

So I guess, I think that's the only other additional piece that I would just layer on top of big picture that Amrita gave.

Speaker 0

There's a few points that I wanted to pick at before.

Speaker 0

I'm happy to hear your thoughts on the various subsectors that you are more excited and or less excited about.

Speaker 0

But as followers of this podcast know, I've been talking every morning to Steve Cress, and he's been talking a lot about this midterm election seasonality and how it's affecting things and that subsequent to the midterm elections, typically, historically, the market has exploded thereafter.

Speaker 0

A, I'm wondering as a, you know, a macro observer at the very least, what you would say about the seasonality point that we're in, how that pertains to also what it seems to be, as you said, a return to tech.

Speaker 0

And then if I may, if it doesn't...

Speaker 0

I'm wondering if the bubble conversation about tech, does that serve you at all?

Speaker 0

Does that serve your insight or analysis at all?

Speaker 0

Do you feel like it's a waste of time to have that conversation?

Speaker 0

Do you feel like we were maybe about to be in the bubble?

Speaker 0

Like, what's your...

Speaker 0

I'm curious your thoughts about that whole narrative and and kind of the discussion around that topic.

Speaker 0

Because it sure gets a lot of play, and I don't know how worthy all that play is.

Speaker 0

当然。

Sure.

Speaker 0

That's a long that's a long question.

Speaker 0

Enjoy.

Speaker 1

It's a great question.

Speaker 1

就是……

Was just like...

Speaker 1

I I mean, you know, if if if you don't hear any conversation around AI bubble for, like, a week or two tops, we'll be like, alright.

Speaker 1

When is the next headline coming?

Speaker 1

Like, you know, it it it probably gets a lot of clicks.

Speaker 1

It's Everybody's involved in the AI bubble conversation.

Speaker 1

Your uncle, your grandfather is involved.

Speaker 1

Like, everybody knows about an AI bubble now at this point.

Speaker 1

But from a fundamental standpoint, yes.

Speaker 1

I mean, I do think we will eventually get there.

Speaker 1

Are we there yet?

Speaker 1

Not at all.

Speaker 1

We are just getting started, like I said.

Speaker 1

Like when you look at like hyperscaler CapEx, like up until early last year, all of it was used...

Speaker 1

All of it was funded using operating cash flows.

Speaker 1

Today, are seeing an increasing portion of hyperscaler CapEx being funded using debt.

Speaker 1

Oracle is one of the companies that is getting hit the worst because of its, you know, of its credit rating getting downgraded and its CDS spreads just like, you know, ballooning and things like that.

Speaker 1

And debt to CapEx ratios have been going up generally as well.

Speaker 1

But then you look at the underlying, you know, the metrics underneath it, you know, things like, you know, your cloud revenue is accelerating, AI revenue within cloud revenue is accelerating.

Speaker 1

Backlog is exploding.

Speaker 1

And most importantly, like, I think investors are up...

Speaker 1

Investors often forget this or sort of like, because, you know, the short termism is like so ingrained in us sometimes is that, yeah, the hyperscaler is growing today, but it's eventually going to start to normalize.

Speaker 1

And then it starts to normalize and your $2,000,000,000,000 backlog that is there today, including Oracle's will also start to convert into real revenue.

Speaker 1

And then it's...

Speaker 1

And and it and it is not just that it's converting into revenue.

Speaker 1

It is also converting into revenue at higher rental rates because your GPU prices are actually going up.

Speaker 1

So you you match your normalizing of Capex with, your backlog converting into revenue at higher rental rates plus additional volume of AI workloads that you will be procuring.

Speaker 1

And your operating leverage will actually turn positive within a year, within probably eighteen months or so.

Speaker 1

So I think a free cash flow inflection is definitely coming, which investors probably know at the back of their head.

Speaker 1

But again, like I think there is just a fear around like, okay, but most the commitments are still like OpenAI and Anthropic, which I agree is an area of potential risk.

Speaker 1

But yeah, like from a fundamental standpoint, we are not seeing hyperscalers pull back Capex.

Speaker 1

In fact, last quarter, except from Microsoft, all three of them, Meta, Amazon, and Google, they actually raised their Capex.

Speaker 1

So, yeah, so I think, yeah, I definitely think that the bubble conversation will come in and out.

Speaker 1

It also provides us sometimes very good buying opportunities, like especially when you like sort of clear out the noise and look at the long term picture.

Speaker 1

Like for instance, last month when the AI panic happened over the slowdown thing with all the cyber suit...

Speaker 1

With all the...

Speaker 1

With with Dario Amodi's essay on pacing the frontier.

Speaker 1

And everybody was like, oh my god, like AI is going to now slow down.

Speaker 1

And the next day we got like a pretty massive correction in AI stocks and we got a great op buying opportunity, for instance.

Speaker 1

So so yeah, it's it's it's it's it's managing volatility around noisy narratives while staying sort of focused on the long term picture, which don't think, which we think is fully intact at this point.

Speaker 0

I like noisy narratives.

Speaker 0

I like that term.

Speaker 0

Very apt.

Speaker 0

Uttam, anything to add to that, to Amrita's point there?

Speaker 2

Yeah, actually I was looking at...

Speaker 2

So I think a lot of the bubble conversation actually was even coming from Capex and then how hyperscalers are trying to issue record volumes of debt.

Speaker 2

And so there's this confusing narrative going out there that you're gonna need more Capex to fuel the AI infrastructure boom.

Speaker 2

And I can say this much that I think 2023 was one big year where you saw just this foundational AI just you know getting in and starting to percolate through all of the enterprises, especially the large ones.

Speaker 2

And then 2025 is like one another year at least in my, you know, that I will look back to and I can say like, I think that's the year where everyone started looking at how probably AI can actually monetize.

Speaker 2

And you can see like, you know, memory started to go up from there and then the prices started to go up from there and optical, you know, this whole switch to optical and networking, you know, was was huge in 2025.

Speaker 2

And that's that's all because like AI data data centers, they they needed to be quick and fast.

Speaker 2

And I think people, especially in the...

Speaker 2

In in in hyperscalers, they they they could foresee that there is gonna be some kind of a influence boom, that is gonna that is gonna come.

Speaker 2

And I think 2025 was one big year that we saw this happening.

Speaker 2

So which is why when when you see the Capex growth rate, just the CAGR growth rates between 2023 and 2025, it's about 67%, 68 CAGR rates.

Speaker 2

And and now when you look at like where hyperscaler Capex is gonna go into next year, that's about 1.3, 1,400,000,000,000.

Speaker 2

So between 2025 and 2027, that's that's still actually just about 70% CAGR growth rates.

Speaker 2

But from '23 to '25, you have a...

Speaker 2

It's a lot of Capex that's that's front loaded.

Speaker 2

So that's fast growth and then normalizing.

Speaker 2

And now from '25 to '27, you have that normalizing and then that's gonna slow down.

Speaker 2

In that, you know, in that entire curve of of of CapEx growth, you have people like Microsoft and and people like Meta also that that had front loaded a lot of their CapEx.

Speaker 2

And so these guys are trying to slow their CapEx down.

Speaker 2

They're probably gonna see, you know, some big booms in their in their ROI.

Speaker 2

There's this metric called ROI.

Speaker 2

See, that actually illustrates how the the...

Speaker 2

How are...

Speaker 2

How the ROI on Capex and all the investments that these big hyperscalers are making.

Speaker 2

I think we're gonna start to see some some major improvements in that ROIC metric, especially for hyperscalers as we move forward.

Speaker 2

So I I...

Speaker 2

I'm I'm quite optimistic about where we're gonna go, you know, over the next one to two years as as we see inference switching gears into the real monetization that everyone really wanted to see and and it was talked about over the past two or three years.

Speaker 2

I don't think like we're in this bubble territory yet.

Speaker 1

The seasonality right now is probably going to act as a tailwind despite the liquidity conditions worsening ten years and everything.

Speaker 1

I think it's probably going to act as a tailwind for the next leg of the S and P 500, which I don't think is going to be much, but probably, you know, 8000, 8200 tops.

Speaker 1

I think once midterms fade, are in for some rough, you know, some rocky road, which again, like I said, is good for the

Speaker 2

AI trade overall.

Speaker 2

Have a A different opinion?

Speaker 2

Slightly different And that's going back to 2018 Okay.

Speaker 2

When the midterm elections happened in November and then at the time the Fed chair Jerome Powell had to suddenly surprise markets and then suddenly you know, increase rates in December and that caused this flash crash in December.

Speaker 2

I think we should maybe be just prepared for this Yeah.

Speaker 2

Alternate risk scenario where we could suddenly see a a you know a a you know chairman Walsh who is trying not to give as much information and and just let the market dictate their own forces and their own conclusions on the the interest rate outlook.

Speaker 2

I think that's that's kind of like one risk scenario that I feel like we should all be just looking in in...

Speaker 2

Looking forward in the rear or or looking forward ahead and see if that...

Speaker 2

That's something that could be possible that Chairman Wash could be pressured and cornered to to raise rates much more than than than what markets were expecting.

Speaker 2

I think that's the only other scenario that we should factor

Speaker 0

Another thing I was talking about with Steve Cress actually was...

Speaker 0

And I'm curious your opinion of the two deals that were reportedly in in talks today with Amazon reportedly in talks to acquire Descartes and NVIDIA reportedly in talks to acquire Reflection AI.

Speaker 0

Any thoughts on the m and a section and how you see consolidation happening happening and or if you're excited about it, where where we're at in that cycle?

Speaker 2

The the easy answer, the straight answer is m and a...

Speaker 2

If if m and a is happening, that's one sign of of of AI business that that the outlook for AI is still strong.

Speaker 2

If if m and a is happening, you know that there is the underlying, you know, everyone's trying to be competitive, everyone's trying to buy out the competitor or trying to buy out someone else to gain some leverage to to, you know, jump through the hoops and be more competitive in in a certain space.

Speaker 2

比如……

For...

Speaker 2

Let's let's take for example Amazon's acquisition of, I think was deck...

Speaker 2

Descartes。

Tech Art.

Speaker 2

It's quite clear like the intentions why Amazon was trying to do that.

Speaker 2

It's it's kind of...

Speaker 2

There's there's, you know, at least two...

Speaker 2

I was reading through, you know, the the the press release and I think I can...

Speaker 2

I could come up with at least one or two reasons why they wanted to do that.

Speaker 2

One is they have their own chips, their own trainium chips that they're they're also trying to probably, you know, follow a Google TPU model where they'll they'll try to like just sell the chips directly.

Speaker 2

Also remember Amazon has...

Speaker 2

Is is one of the only hyperscalers that makes their own chips and has a partnership with NVIDIA via the NVLink fusion protocol that is that is NVIDIA's IP for building the scale up networks in in AI data centers.

Speaker 2

And so I think by by buying Descartes AI, they could leverage the chip optimization software from this from this from this startup, which could then be used to, you know, to to to accurately and and and to optimize how workloads get split up into the best pieces.

Speaker 2

And then part of it could be sent to maybe NVIDIA's GPUs, another part could be sent to Amazon's Tranium chips.

Speaker 2

And so they're they're trying to like, you know, give the best value out to whoever is is Amazon's customer.

Speaker 2

I I guess that's kind of the motive for doing that.

Speaker 2

And you can see like they're trying to, you know, provide value in all of this to stay competitive.

Speaker 2

A, by by selling the value, they can probably, you know, even, you know, push the the limits of their own gross margins for AWS, which is kind of like a big deal that Amazon needs to keep showing.

Speaker 2

So I think this is just like, I think it's it's a great plus for for Amazon and for AWS and for AI.

Speaker 2

With the Nvidia deal, didn't catch much of that deal though but I think like it's kind of also so that Nvidia can just stay competitive in this whole marketplace as well.

Speaker 2

There's so much of talk going on about open weight models, open source models now.

Speaker 2

So I think NVIDIA's trying to really also stay competitive around this.

Speaker 0

What would you say about the sub sectors?

Speaker 0

What would you say in terms of software hyperscalers?

Speaker 0

Who is there to like?

Speaker 0

Who is there not to like?

Speaker 0

Why stock specific ETFs?

Speaker 0

Happy to hear your thoughts.

Speaker 1

I can start again with the hyperscalers and software, And then I think you can take over the infrastructure bit.

Speaker 1

So like I said in the first question in the macro section that agentic...

Speaker 1

Around agentic AI, I think we are just in the very, very early stages of Agentic AI right now with the first actual personal AI agent muse that is in the hands of people.

Speaker 1

It also marks a pivotal shift away from this passive chatbots into autonomous agents who can work, who complete tasks without or with minimal human supervision.

Speaker 1

So it's a paradigm shift.

Speaker 1

It's a fundamental shift in the whole sort of space.

Speaker 1

I think when it comes to hyperscalers as a whole, I think I'll just start with Meta.

Speaker 1

I know I spoke about Meta in the previous podcast as well.

Speaker 1

When Meta was like going nowhere and I was still like pushing Meta as one of my highest conviction pick.

Speaker 1

It is I think, my third largest position in my portfolio.

Speaker 1

Meta 终于……

Meta is finally...

Speaker 1

Mean, was the thing that was not working for Meta up until now was that the company was spending a lot of Capex and there was not enough non ads business revenue to show for it.

Speaker 1

So like investors wanted to see like evidence of standalone revenue, which is not ads revenue.

Speaker 1

And Meta up until last quarter just couldn't show it.

Speaker 1

And yet it is spending so much Capex and yet...

Speaker 1

And at the same time its margins are coming under pressure, free cash flow, all depressed, all of that.

Speaker 1

And I think Meta finally got control of that narrative.

Speaker 1

And I mean, listen to not just listen to investors, obviously it was working on news even before that.

Speaker 1

With the launch of MetaMuse basically, it now has demonstrated that it can that there is a significant business line that is coming up, which is not ads and which can be monetized using subscriptions and most importantly, transaction based revenue.

Speaker 1

And I think the opportunity in consumer AI currently is huge.

Speaker 1

I mean, for instance, like Meta is not just sticking to Meta Muse as something downloadable, but it's also integrating it in their Meta AI glasses.

Speaker 1

There's this commercial, I think, that came out last week of people using their phones to go sideways to watch a Wimbledon match, sorry, a US Open match.

Speaker 1

And, you know, the person wearing a Meta Glass would just, like, look.

Speaker 1

So you don't

Speaker 0

have to you don't have

Speaker 1

to own the device.

Speaker 1

就像你

Like, you

Speaker 0

don't have to you don't have

Speaker 1

to live the reality by looking through a phone.

Speaker 1

You can actually just wear it.

Speaker 1

And I thought it was very cool.

Speaker 1

So I think, yeah, so I think MetaMuse could actually skyrocket their consumer side of the business, as well as the Reality Labs, which also had been sort of...

Speaker 1

It had been making progress, but it's tiny revenues compared to their overall ads business.

Speaker 1

And at the same time, I think Meta just didn't stick to the consumer lane.

Speaker 1

They also rolled out their enterprise platform, Meta enterprise platform, where they're rolling out Muse for businesses.

Speaker 1

And I think where like OpenAI and Google have like an upper hand with large enterprises, Meta has a pretty strong positioning with small businesses.

Speaker 1

Because, you know, there's like probably 200,000,000 businesses who are already using Meta's services on Instagram and WhatsApp and things like that.

Speaker 1

So I think there's a lot of new revenue potential for Meta that is coming up and it's going to come up very quickly.

Speaker 1

Investors were originally like, okay, there's excess compute capacity.

Speaker 1

Why not just rent it out?

Speaker 1

But Meta was like, hold on, We have more strategic things we are working on and it's going to be huge.

Speaker 1

And I think we are starting to see that.

Speaker 1

The stock obviously skyrocketed after that.

Speaker 1

Not yet made a new all time high though, but I think there's a clear path for Meta in the coming months, quarters, or a year to be a thousand dollar plus stock in my opinion.

Speaker 1

So, yeah, so I think Meta is one of the immediate beneficiaries of agentic in my opinion.

Speaker 1

I also think that with agentic AI, actually I'll take a step back.

Speaker 1

Like last month was interesting because you had Meta Muse and...

Speaker 1

Which spearheaded agentic AI.

Speaker 1

And at the same time, you had all these OpenAI researchers leaving the companies...

Speaker 1

Leaving OpenAI and there's so much just AI safety concerns going...

Speaker 1

Because of fears of superintelligence wrecking human lives and whatnot.

Speaker 1

So the thing is that with agentic AI, cybersecurity is only going to become so much more important.

Speaker 1

And you can see that with cybersecurity stocks like CrowdStrike, Cloudflare that have just been skyrocketing despite their premium valuations, for instance.

Speaker 1

Particularly Cloudflare is interesting because I I know in my...

Speaker 1

In the last podcast, like, there was still SaaS for Calibs going on, but I remember I was like, no, cybersecurity will definitely be a winner and so will Palantir.

Speaker 1

But coming to cybersecurity, obviously I'm I'm I'm a huge CrowdStrike bull.

Speaker 1

I own CrowdStrike in my portfolio, but with Cloudflare for instance, I guess, I mean, I wrote about it.

Speaker 1

I probably left that opportunity too early because of valuation.

Speaker 1

But I think where Cloudflare is uniquely winning in agentic AI is because when you have When it's not just large enterprises, but like consumers and small businesses using so much AI inference, you need to be able to run that inference locally, close to the end user.

Speaker 1

And that is where Cloudflare's CDN services come very useful, along with their cybersecurity offering as well.

Speaker 1

So yeah, so I think for me, Meta definitely continues to be a big winner along with the whole cyber secure...

Speaker 1

Like the cybersecurity landscape, but specifically like the fully integrated platforms like CrowdStrike.

Speaker 1

I do like Palo Alto as well, but I do own...

Speaker 1

But I actually own CrowdStrike.

Speaker 1

And I I I I really like...

Speaker 1

Think Cloudflare is something I give up too quickly.

Speaker 1

And now I'm looking for maybe a pullback to get back in because I think the long term picture looks great.

Speaker 0

You said that you pulled the plug too early on Cloudflare.

Speaker 0

What would you share with investors in terms of lessons learned there?

Speaker 1

I think there are a couple of things.

Speaker 1

There's obviously your risk management, which plays a big part.

Speaker 1

Like when you're managing a portfolio, only have a certain number of stocks.

Speaker 1

And when you're not a 100% confident, given your limited capital, you're trying to generate superior returns compared to the index.

Speaker 1

So, I think there was a capital allocation decision at that time that we made to get out of Cloudflare.

Speaker 1

And I think allocate more towards CrowdStrike at that time.

Speaker 1

There is also the bit around like tech, you know, fundamentals versus technicals.

Speaker 1

I mean, we are, you know, primarily fundamental investors, but we do look at charts in order to like sort of determine buy points and exits and things like that.

Speaker 1

Allocation sizing is really important.

Speaker 1

So yeah, I think it's one of those cases where being a fundamental investor beats short term technical chart management, I guess.

Speaker 1

And yeah, like I said, I think with Cloudflare, was just about just believing in the long term.

Speaker 1

Like, I mean, and I think there was plenty of evidence to be very honest.

Speaker 1

The technical bit is one.

Speaker 1

And then the second bit is about allocation sizing.

Speaker 1

Think we, for companies like Cloudflare, which a, could be risky, yes, currently the picture looks great, at that time, like the price volatility in the stock was quite a lot for us, plus of its premium valuation.

Speaker 1

So it's about allocation sizing.

Speaker 1

So keep it at starter.

Speaker 1

I think we had, you know, increased our position too quickly was probably one of the reasons why we just got uncomfortable at one point.

Speaker 1

So if you're not fully confident, then just start at basic, like a starter allocation and scale it up.

Speaker 2

The other piece that I would add is from an AI infrastructure standpoint, which I think is going to switch gears into a different kind of an acceleration mode.

Speaker 2

This conversation that you know, the three of us had in April, we were talking about thematic investing I think.

Speaker 2

And at the time we had spoken about bottleneck trades, which was kind of just a new tone that was turning around the corner and we see bottleneck trades just you know, explode everywhere.

Speaker 2

There's CPU bottlenecks, there's optical networking bottlenecks, there's power bottlenecks, memory bottlenecks obviously with Micron and whatever's going on with SK Hynix and you know, the like.

Speaker 2

And so that's just one conversation that we could break this out into.

Speaker 2

There were three stocks just based on these bottleneck rates that we had talked about in April.

Speaker 2

Two out of them were Marvel which is up I think a 120, a 130 since April.

Speaker 2

It still is a big part of our portfolio.

Speaker 2

Yes, it's Right?

Speaker 2

It's quite I think it's a top five position for us.

Speaker 2

Resizing the position as we've kept going, but Marvel is is I think great.

Speaker 2

I I continue to reiterate that Marvel's I think gonna switch into this new mode of of acceleration.

Speaker 2

Whatever they did last year in October when they acquired this this really interesting startup called Celestial AI to pivot...

Speaker 2

那个……

That...

Speaker 2

That's helped pivot Marvel into this giant like, know, in in optical networking.

Speaker 2

I think they're doing great.

Speaker 2

They just had their investor day last week, so we have some fresh data points in terms of their outlook.

Speaker 2

And so they have...

Speaker 2

Marvel

Marvel's come out and said that they're going to...

Speaker 2

They've revised their their short term outlook for FY '27, I I think which is CY twenty six.

Speaker 2

They've revised that to 12,000,000,000.

Speaker 2

That's about 47% growth.

Speaker 2

Remember, that's a third upgrade in their outlook for the whole year in the past six or six or eight months, which is really bullish.

Speaker 2

And they expect 47% of revenue growth this year.

Speaker 2

That accelerates to about I think 67% next year and so that the acceleration is just happening because there's so much of demand for Marvel's optical interconnect and that's coming from, you know, from their own IP, that's coming from whatever they've acquired through the Celestial AI takeover, the M and A.

Speaker 2

So they're doing great.

Speaker 2

And then even in terms of...

Speaker 2

That was just nominal growth that I spoke about even in terms of gross margins.

Speaker 2

Marvell

Marvel's just pushing the limit of their gross margins.

Speaker 2

They're already expanding about 20, 30 basis points per quarter, they're at 53% in the last quarter.

Speaker 2

They think at least as per management's own guidance, they think they can push that out to like 56%, if not 59% over the next two or three years.

Speaker 2

And that's what I wanna see as an investor.

Speaker 2

I wanna see not just the nominal growth that keeps accelerating, I wanna see gross margins as well.

Speaker 2

Gross adjusted, know, growth that's expanding because then to me that's a big signal that Marvel's actually...

Speaker 2

Someone like Marvel is is able to take advantage of the demand that they have to to price to value and not just, you know, push the growth out or deliver growth, but they can also deliver those gross margin expansions.

Speaker 2

And that's something that's I always see as, you know, one of the metrics in terms of the AI beneficiaries, if you will.

Speaker 2

Lumentum continues to be, it's the second pick that I continue to reiterate, something that I even spoke about in April as well.

Speaker 2

Lumentum is again something that is a mainstay in our portfolio, know, on the lines of the optical networking piece.

Speaker 2

Lumentum

Their laser chips that Lumentum manufactures is so short.

Speaker 2

It's so short in supply that they're unable to keep up with the demand that I think in April when, you know, the three of us spoke in the podcast, at the time Lumentum CEO had said that their demand...

Speaker 2

Their their capacity to manufacture laser chips has been sold out through 2028.

Speaker 2

And on Friday, they updated investors that that the capacity now for 2029 has been sold out and they've opened bookings for 2,030.

Speaker 2

So that's kind of the scale of demand that you're seeing for laser chips and there's so much of demand for laser chips that needs to be integrated in networking switches and then which is being deployed in scale out networks that's basically connecting servers to servers.

Speaker 2

And then next year we have scale up networking where laser chips are being deployed.

Speaker 2

There's just so much of demand.

Speaker 2

So Momentum is just one one great company as well that I I you know, recommend out here as well.

Speaker 2

And and even for for Momentum, growth is just you know, accelerating.

Speaker 2

It's it's you know, switching gears constantly.

Speaker 2

Like we had 13% growth in FY24, 83% growth that Lumentum delivered in the recently concluded FY26 in June.

Speaker 2

And then that's gonna add, that is expected to accelerate to about 110% next year.

Speaker 2

Again, for Lumentum gross margins are expanding.

Speaker 2

It's about, they're expecting about 55% gross margin, so that's again something I really wanna see as an investor.

Speaker 2

This is something that's really really dear to me in terms of a high conviction pick and I didn't talk enough in the April podcast that we had and that's AMD.

Speaker 2

I think any investor on Seeking Alpha who's looking through my coverage, they'll just see through it and say like you know this guy is a AMD fan like you know a Lisa Su who's a CEO.

Speaker 2

This guy is a Lisa Su.

Speaker 2

He should open up a Lisa Su fan club because she's just done

Speaker 1

Do you

Speaker 0

have her posters on your wall?

Speaker 2

I don't.

Speaker 2

I probably You're

Speaker 0

though.

Speaker 0

Just give him a couple

Speaker 0

I'm close.

Speaker 2

是的。

I am.

Speaker 2

Maybe she should wear a leather jacket or something.

Speaker 0

Is about to be another kind of podcast altogether.

Speaker 0

We're talking about wardrobe right

Speaker 1

对。

now.

Speaker 2

We're talking about wardrobe.

Speaker 0

This is what...

Speaker 0

Lisa Sue, this is some personal feedback from one of our top analysts, one of our great investing minds.

Speaker 2

By the way, I think I speak for a lot of subscribers who are also there.

Speaker 2

I I just love how Lisa Sue has taken the company from from somewhere to an inflection point where she tried to fight for market share with her instinct GPUs that that AMD had.

Speaker 2

And so '24 and '25 was about '23 and '24 was about GPUs and trying to get the company on an inflection mode.

Speaker 2

And then we're now at a point where like it's just not inflection anymore.

Speaker 2

We're talking about acceleration out here.

Speaker 2

We're not talking about like just 37% or 40, you know, 33% growth.

Speaker 2

No.

Speaker 2

I mean, with with whatever, you know, the the kind of tailwinds that that AMD has, not just with the GPUs, but with the CPUs as well.

Speaker 2

We're talking about probably an acceleration to 75% growth.

Speaker 2

We're talking about gross margin expansion.

Speaker 2

Amrita was talking about personal AI agents.

Speaker 2

If you look at how personal AI agents, how they work, they depend on an infrastructure in the in the bedrock of their architecture.

Speaker 2

They depend on on on an infrastructure setup that requires CPUs and then it requires memory and storage.

Speaker 2

That's that's such a big tailwind for for AMD moving forward.

Speaker 2

And then and then the other piece that Amrita was talking about was that because personal AI agents, when when they when they need to work, the the way most of the the hyperscalers have thought about this is that the workloads need to work really close to our devices, which is the phones that I'm holding in my hand or like a laptop.

Speaker 2

And so they partner with content delivery networks or CDN providers like Cloudflare or Fastly.

Speaker 2

And now the benefit is that these CDN providers like Cloudflare or Fastly, they all need CPUs as well to to keep, you know, processing all these edge AI workloads that run.

Speaker 2

And so I think that's that's like another big tailwind also for for AMD.

Speaker 2

So these are the three peaks I think that continues to...

Speaker 2

That will continue to remain like, you know, mainstay in my portfolio, in our portfolio.

Speaker 2

I I though admit that I am starting to get really interested in in Micron and a lot of storage names.

Speaker 2

It's it's on my watch list now because I think we're close.

Speaker 2

We're close on Micron, to a bottom at least.

Speaker 0

Well, there's another thing that Steve Cress has really enjoyed talking about is Micron, a strong buy that we have talked on and on about on his YouTube channel at Crest Top Stocks.

Speaker 0

I wanted to end this conversation, if you wouldn't mind.

Speaker 0

Amrita,

Amrita, first of all, anything to add there?

Speaker 1

I think we have sort of covered, you know, the three main parts of beneficiaries from Agentic AI.

Speaker 1

We have Meta, we have cybersecurity, CDN providers, and then we have the heap of, you know, the optical, the infrastructure names that include your AMD's and- Lumentum's.

Speaker 1

Lumentum。

Lumentum's.

Speaker 1

Lumentum, and possibly storage names that we may be adding to our portfolio soon.

Speaker 1

So, yeah, no, I think we've covered the cohort pretty well.

Speaker 0

So I just wanted to close with a comment that was left on, as you mentioned, April's conversation that we had.

Speaker 0

It said, Best place for actual AI application is in drug compounding and self driving vehicle systems, but there can be no discussion of AI without including quantum.

Speaker 0

Incidentally, Amrita liked that comment, so I thought I would ask you.

Speaker 1

I actually defer to you on this because I'm not very...

Speaker 2

I will say this, I am intrigued very much by the possibility of what AI is probably about to do in the biotech or the pharma space.

Speaker 2

I think that's...

Speaker 2

Is that...

Speaker 2

Rina?

Am I gonna go on that right trajectory if I'm answering your question, Rina?

Speaker 2

I was just sitting with Amrita last week and I was looking at...

Speaker 2

I've been just like looking at just Moderna just go up and I'm holding my head thinking how could, I mean, I know like, you know, it's just one to see a stock go up and say, we could have been there.

Speaker 2

But now my mind has been thinking of, you know, constantly every day at the back of my head thinking, how, what's the angle out there?

Speaker 2

And so then I started looking inside how Moderna goes about with you know, differently with their entire drug meeting process, everything.

Speaker 2

And I started to notice that they look...

Speaker 2

They'll...

Speaker 2

他们……

They...

Speaker 2

Especially in a few stages.

Speaker 2

So just, you know, quick step back, there are about three, four or five stages I think in the entire drug making process.

Speaker 2

And the first two stages or three stages, that's kind of like the grind I think for most of the pharma companies.

Speaker 2

It's heavily R and D intensive, it's heavily data intensive.

Speaker 2

There's lots of preclinical trials and you know, lots of different kinds of testing that they do and I started to look into all of this just last week and I figured out like, you know, probably the conclusion was it takes most of these companies about maybe eight, ten years of constant testing and reiteration and testing again to figure out and looking at lots of quality data, lots of synthetic data as well to figure out like what's the best confidence levels they have to move a certain drug trial to the next level.

Speaker 2

And I saw there was this name that popped up.

Speaker 2

It's called, it's this company that's called Tempus AI, the ticker is T E M.

Speaker 2

And so I noticed that Tempus AI has this agreement with Moderna and then Merck as well, where they help in either providing a lot of the data.

Speaker 2

I apologize, I don't have a lot of information out there, but it's just something that I was looking at and I'm still researching all of that.

Speaker 2

And I I I feel like it's it's the it's the AI comp...

Speaker 2

If AI has to actually provide a benefit, it's the first one or two stages in in preclinical AI testing, a pre clinical drug testing stages where they can provide maximum value and benefit.

Speaker 2

If they can do that, if any company can do that, I also read reports about Anthropic or OpenAI also trying to like look at this space.

Speaker 2

I think we could see like this different kind of a...

Speaker 2

We're talking about edge AI as one monetization curve for AI.

Speaker 2

We could look at, you know, different verticals of, you know, monetization out here.

Speaker 2

In that case, if that happens, 2027 is gonna be such a great year for just, you know, delivering the kind of monetization that everyone was asking for.

Speaker 0

Yeah, I remember Kirk Spano being on a year or two ago talking about how the main thing he was excited about for AI was in biotech and specifically for him with Pfizer at that point.

Speaker 0

So yeah, definitely lot to still discover and uncover.

Speaker 0

When you say that you still have a lot to research, where are the main places you are going for that research?

Speaker 2

There's obviously, I use Gemini and I use Claude by myself to that.

Speaker 2

But I also look at, I've just started last week, so I'm looking, the first place that I usually look at is especially, for me I start with the trigger.

Speaker 2

The trigger for me is Moderna and that's kind of where, that's kind of like my research trigger point and the question I ask is why, why did it go up?

Speaker 2

Moderna

What's so special about Moderna at that point that made the stock go up?

Speaker 2

And so I start to like you know retrace backwards and see did they say something before the stock went up?

Speaker 2

I look at like what kind of questions were being asked in any of the conferences.

Speaker 2

I don't look at the prepared remarks, but I look at mainly like what kind of questions were being asked.

Speaker 2

Like what's the thinking here that you know, Moderna was going, did they give any clues before that?

Speaker 2

And so that sets the stage for me to have like some direction where I can start researching on on probably the next breakout sector in maybe in AI or maybe in biotech or you know, any other space.

Speaker 2

So I started with that, I obviously, the whole process for me, I feel like was fast forwarded with the help of AI itself by using Gemini and using Claude for example.

Speaker 2

And so I'm still continuing and it's still an iterative process for me, but I think it...

Speaker 2

I've given myself like a time box of probably a month for me to decide.

Speaker 2

I do the research, I come up with you know, a few beneficiaries in the space and I figure out okay, then that's when you know, Amrita and I start talking about the conviction levels and why I think it's right and then she starts you know, trying to decide about the allocation size in the portfolio and where exactly that fits and what's the thematic sense here that this particular you know beneficiary makes and that's kind of like how we then decide the action in terms of like the candidate for that particular beneficiary in the portfolio.

Speaker 0

I myself as a humble podcast host, I spend a lot of my time thinking about what is the timeline for AI to take my job or the jobs of those around me.

Speaker 0

Do either of you spend time thinking about that dystopian future?

Speaker 0

Not for me particular, but in general for society, for humanity.

Speaker 0

Are you scared?

Speaker 0

Are you excited?

Speaker 0

Are we gonna use it?

Speaker 0

Is it mostly gonna be used for good?

Speaker 0

Thoughts?

Speaker 2

We're we're going on a

Speaker 0

People are freaking out.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

We're going in a really different direction.

Speaker 0

But I feel like you guys spent...

Speaker 0

But I feel like you guys are spending time looking at it from obviously an investment perspective.

Speaker 0

I'm curious what your thoughts are.

Speaker 0

People are freaking out on a society level.

Speaker 0

What are your thoughts on in terms of how much do do humans still need to be involved?

Speaker 0

What's your outlook?

Speaker 0

What's your...

Speaker 0

I say it a little bit tongue in cheek, but also not so tongue in cheek.

Speaker 1

So I can start.

Speaker 1

I don't think we actively think that AI is gonna come after our jobs immediately.

Speaker 2

By the way, thank you for starting.

Speaker 2

I was thinking about it.

Speaker 0

I mean, it just like, it's

Speaker 1

in my head.

Speaker 1

Like, when I say immediately, like over the next what?

Speaker 1

And then the thing is that like, you know, the pace of innovation is so fast at this point.

Speaker 1

Like, it's really hard to like, you know, when someone asks you where do you see yourself like five from now, like, I feel

Speaker 0

like Yeah.

Speaker 1

You wouldn't have any

Speaker 2

I know.

Speaker 2

Idea of I...

Speaker 2

等等。

Hold on.

Speaker 2

I I can...

Speaker 2

I'm gonna add something here.

Speaker 2

I think in in in 2023 or '24, we were all we we were all like marveling at the scale of potential that AI could do.

Speaker 2

And as investors as well, we were...

Speaker 2

With with our portfolio capital, we were trying to even match like mirror that that scale.

Speaker 2

So so if if if Microsoft could do something, we're trying to put our portfolio capital there.

Speaker 2

That conversation has changed.

Speaker 2

At least according to to me and to us.

Speaker 2

I feel like instead of marveling at the scale of of of the the potential of AI, I think it's just like, just look at how quickly AI is just rapidly pacing through different, you know, in in innovation cycles

Speaker 1

And how

Speaker 2

and and how quickly it's moving.

Speaker 2

在……

In...

Speaker 2

Even in even in the in the AI infrastructure layer, there's this architectural changes that's happening, like, eight, ten, twelve months.

Speaker 2

You wouldn't see this kind of a a rotation just in terms of like architecture, like, you know, before the pandemic.

Speaker 2

Even look at like how...

Speaker 2

Everyone everyone's trying to be a startup out here.

Speaker 2

If you look at like like what Mark Zuckerberg and even the guy at Google, Surge, what what they're doing is like they're like...

Speaker 2

There's this one Gemini team that's just basically working out of the kitchen so that they maintain that startup environment to just innovate at that pace without the red tape so they can match the pace of AI innovation that's just going on.

Speaker 2

So it's just evolving so rapidly.

Speaker 2

And I heard this conversation with Mark Zuckerberg where they were talking about how in order to innovate at that space, he called the entire...

Speaker 2

His core team and he just put them in one corner of the office so they could just work without red tape and whatever approvals they needed.

Speaker 2

It was right there.

Speaker 2

You just ask for me, ask me of the approval right there itself and it's done.

Speaker 2

And so like everyone's moving at that such a And quick that's something that sometimes I do get scared.

Speaker 2

But then on the other hand, I do feel like, you know, this is an opportunity.

Speaker 2

Like this is something that we could still also just continue to just, you know, stay invested.

Speaker 2

I mean, that's what I wanted to say.

Speaker 1

And I think like when it comes to like, you know, norm...

Speaker 1

Like the implications of that for like human beings like ourselves, I think what we had to make peace with is that the status quo is not gonna remain status quo for too long.

Speaker 1

And as a result, we're in an environment where we have to be constantly upskilling and just know how to use AI Yeah.

Speaker 1

You know, across tasks, like actually learn, understand how it can actually make your life productive.

Speaker 1

Yeah, sure.

Speaker 1

Like AI doesn't, you know, cook and clean yet, know, cook clean dishes and vacuum your house.

Speaker 1

Maybe it'll come soon, but apart like, know, there are actual, like for instance, the whole research process, the investment research process, which would take us a lot of time before, considerably more time before.

Speaker 1

Now has shortened quite a bit because of the prompts that we use and things like that.

Speaker 1

So yeah, so I think there's this acceptance that needs to come that status quo is not gonna remain status quo and you to be constantly open to change and upskilling and that is so, yeah.

Speaker 1

So be comfortable with being...

Speaker 1

I know, get comfortable being uncomfortable.

Speaker 2

Get comfortable being

Speaker 0

uncomfortable.

Speaker 0

I don't know.

Speaker 0

To your point, not the first time the world has seen a major technological iteration advancement displacement of people and their workforce.

Speaker 0

Absolutely.

Speaker 2

It's that it would evolve at a certain pace, but now it's happening so fast that people are getting probably like left behind at a faster pace.

Speaker 0

Right, which is what Oprah says causes dark nights of the soul.

Speaker 0

I would imagine that's why so many people are feeling that.

Speaker 0

Where else can people get in touch with you?

Speaker 0

Where else can people find out more?

Speaker 0

And thanks for playing along with my esoteric dystopian question.

Speaker 1

No, it's absolutely...

Speaker 1

We absolutely love having an open ended conversation.
