Speaker 1

News and notes.

Speaker 1

We're gonna get to it.

Speaker 1

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 1

On the personal front, three updates, Rachel, very quickly.

Speaker 1

One, I was down at CAGNY pretty much all week in Orlando at the Wardorf Hotel.

Speaker 1

That's the perfect time to be in Florida, you know, in February.

Speaker 3

So it was

Speaker 1

just kind of fun.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

Lots of families and

Speaker 3

Warm weather.

Speaker 3

Yes.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

Not too hot.

Speaker 1

So that was a good time.

Speaker 1

Then I was with the Kantar, sort of event.

Speaker 1

I was down in Durham, or I should say up in Durham, North Carolina.

Speaker 1

Never been there, Rachel.

Speaker 1

Super cool, you know, sort of a growing city, very vibrant health care jobs industry just exploding there, sort of, you know, the three universities up there.

Speaker 1

So that was needed.

Speaker 1

And then lastly, Rachel, you'll you'll appreciate this.

Speaker 1

I took Leslie and I last weekend up to Blue Ridge Mountains, two two hour drive, to kinda check out this really cool spa at the Valhalla Resort.

Speaker 1

It's kinda well known.

Speaker 1

So, Rachel, don't laugh, but we did about six hours spa treatments there and learned a lot, and it was very enjoyable.

Speaker 2

Oh, that sounds incredible.

Speaker 2

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 2

That sounds like a dream.

Speaker 2

Amazing.

Speaker 2

Well, wonderful that you were able to to do that.

Speaker 2

That's great.

Speaker 1

I don't know about a dream, Rachel, but it was a good time.

Speaker 1

It was a good time.

Speaker 2

Sounds lovely.

Speaker 2

Dreamy.

Speaker 2

Well, cool.

Speaker 2

Well, I was in cold weather still, cold cold weather Connecticut.

Speaker 2

You know, I think I mentioned that I was taking up skiing because my boys and my husband are really great skiers, and I really wanna be skiing with them.

Speaker 2

And so I continue along that journey.

Speaker 2

I had my third lesson on Friday night, chaperoned my middle school kids ski club, and and really trying to take advantage of just learning.

Speaker 2

So I'm able to get down the bunny hill very slowly, but I'm doing it and turning a bit and stopping pretty well.

Speaker 2

And so I just have to keep working on it, but enjoying kind of that aspect of winter.

Speaker 2

Although at the same time, looking forward to spring, which is around the corner.

Speaker 2

So that's that's exciting.

Speaker 1

Well, I'm proud of you.

Speaker 1

Look at you.

Speaker 1

You're making real progress.

Speaker 1

You're gonna be skiing for most of your life with the with those young sons of yours.

Speaker 1

I think that's awesome.

Speaker 2

Thank you, Barry.

Speaker 1

You're absolutely.

Speaker 1

Alright.

Speaker 1

Let's go.

Speaker 1

CAGNY。

CAGNY.

Speaker 1

So I'm gonna, you know, I'm just gonna reference CAGNY in my news and notes during our sort of three pieces here.

Speaker 1

And big picture, you know, on CAGNY is the question that everyone was asking, you know, hundreds of financial analysts is, what's going on with volume growth?

Speaker 1

And with price no longer propping up, you know, top line numbers, that's sort of the the real question there.

Speaker 1

And I wrote a blog on this.

Speaker 1

We'll include it in the in the recap, but, you know, I just want to speak on three areas.

Speaker 1

Just one right now from news and notes, and that's, you know, premiumization, Rachel, is really driving growth in margin.

Speaker 1

Coca Cola talked about this, you know, as they have Fairlife, which is just oh my goodness.

Speaker 1

Talk about success.

Speaker 1

They they can barely make enough, and that's clearly, you know, a very premium value added dairy brand that's crushing it.

Speaker 1

And then soon they're coming out with Simply Pop.

Speaker 1

That'll be their sort of premium, gut health soda brand.

Speaker 1

Mondelez was another fantastic example.

Speaker 1

They're moving more premium, with cakes and pastries.

Speaker 1

So much success with that.

Speaker 1

And then lastly, Diageo.

Speaker 1

Goodness.

Speaker 1

Diageo was just they don't just have premium brands.

Speaker 1

They have super premium brands and, was a fantastic success story there.

Speaker 1

Of course, that's a challenging industry now with health and wellness and GLP one drugs, etcetera.

Speaker 1

But, you know, they have about 60% of Diageo's net sales come from premium and ultra premium brands, and that's, like, double the industry standard.

Speaker 1

So premiumization is one way we can get to certainly volume growth and margin growth, Rachel.

Speaker 2

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

It's so and I always love this discussion.

Speaker 2

It's one of my I think it's one of the most interesting discussions is the whole value versus values.

Speaker 2

And especially today, you you wonder, you know, people I think just people are in this, like, environment of wanting to be inspired and discover new things, especially in social and and trying new new brands.

Speaker 2

And and so there's a kind of a spirit towards that.

Speaker 2

But at the same time, you know, wallets are tight.

Speaker 2

And so balancing that that whole, you know, is is it worth paying a little more for x with this with trend of premiumization?

Speaker 2

I just find very fascinating.

Speaker 2

But I can see why people wanna indulge a little bit in areas that they're able to indulge in, whether that's you know, traditionally, you talk about cosmetics in in that kind of conversation, but now it's really expanded into into food products as well.

Speaker 2

So super interesting, and you had so many great learnings from CAGNY.

Speaker 2

Barry, we should we should definitely link your blog to the podcast for for everyone to to take a look at that.

Speaker 1

We'll do it.

Speaker 1

And that's the right I think everything you said is correct.

Speaker 2

I so I I prepared a couple piece of news that kind of caught my eye.

Speaker 2

The first is out of Retail Dive, and it's about Walmart deploying AI AI price forecasting tool.

Speaker 2

So a lot of conversations around using technology to to drive efficiencies and innovation and customer experiences.

Speaker 2

But in this case, Walmart is partnering with the software company called Helios AI to better predict climate disruptions and corresponding agricultural product prices to improve its overall sustainable sourcing models and adjust its food supply chain.

Speaker 2

The Helios AI software predicts prices and availability as well as weather patterns up to a year ahead.

Speaker 2

And interestingly, the USDA points to weather disruptions as the primary reason for food loss.

Speaker 2

Interestingly, Helios AI was one of the companies that won the eleventh annual Walmart open call competition for entrepreneur preneurs, which I thought was pretty cool.

Speaker 2

And then Walmart also has another partnership with a company called AgriTask, which is a it's a crop supply intelligence company, and it uses remote sensing and data analytics tools in select regions in The US and Mexico to get specific location data on crops like blackberry crops and cherry crops, for example, grown at specific suppliers.

Speaker 2

So the there's a lot of that, you know, getting down to that granular nuance level of data, which you can do now with, with these software products and sort of this real time information is what Walmart and others, you know, are leveraging, to improve sourcing decisions.

Speaker 1

Great story, Rachel.

Speaker 1

Walmart's just best in class with so much, certainly data and AI, and I like how they also have rolled out that new WALL E tool.

Speaker 1

I'm hearing from a few folks in Bentonville that that's a real value add for merchants.

Speaker 1

And if you're a supplier, we're all gonna wanna understand that a little better.

Speaker 1

May we may have a blog on that.

Speaker 1

I don't know.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yep.

Speaker 2

Maybe.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yep.

Speaker 1

Never know.

Speaker 1

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 1

Back to CAGNY.

Speaker 1

My second sort of call out is just around functional and wellness focused products.

Speaker 1

That's really where so much of the growth is.

Speaker 1

I mean, nearly every company was pivoting here for sure.

Speaker 1

So the the demand for better for you products is just reshaping every FMCG portfolio.

Speaker 1

I mean, I watched 31 presentations, and I watched 31 portfolios move to more, basically, modern health is a term being used, sort of strategies.

Speaker 1

And every brand, certainly food and beverage, is trying to reduce sugar, trying to reduce sodium while also hopefully improving taste and just having a better nutritional, product.

Speaker 1

Couple of examples, Freshpet.

Speaker 1

Oh my goodness.

Speaker 1

I'm so I'm so excited about Freshpet.

Speaker 1

I mean, they are doing such a great job with refrigerated sort of premium pet food, you know, which all ties into health and wellness.

Speaker 1

Rachel, that's now in 28,000 US stores with unparalleled in store visibility with their own owned cooler space.

Speaker 1

I mean, it's a lot like what the beverage companies do with their own coolers.

Speaker 1

Just incredible move around health and wellness with your pet.

Speaker 1

Conagra and Nestle, really led with the GLP one branding, messaging, and solutions there.

Speaker 1

And while we heard many more, the most ever in terms of CPGs talking about the growing obesity issue in GLP one drugs, the topic overall still seemed a bit, you know, understated.

Speaker 1

But, you know, talking to these other analysts there, it's because so many CPGs, you know, just just haven't figured it out yet.

Speaker 1

What's their narrative?

Speaker 1

How are they gonna leverage this, you know, monumental trend for growth?

Speaker 1

So there you go.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Very cool.

Speaker 2

I think the wellness trend is just a you know, it's almost a it's a super trend.

Speaker 2

It's been around it's been here for, you know, decades and decades and will continue, I think, for decades and decades to come because there's always iterations of of what that looks like.

Speaker 2

And for me, gosh, I would love to see the big CPG players, the FMCGs in food to even go bigger with, you know, really clean ingredients so that there's just more options.

Speaker 2

You know, swapping avocado oil for soybean oil, like, just sort of the basic ingredients of I'd I'd love to have more options available, and I think that that that you're starting to see this this trend tick upward where where perhaps you'll start seeing center sore stores shift in ways where there's just more more opportunities for kind of wellness and food good food products.

Speaker 2

Food is medicine, the core of the core of everything.

Speaker 1

You're so right.

Speaker 1

And by the way, in the q and a sessions, make America healthy again, RFK junior was coming up.

Speaker 1

So what you know, this is going to, you know, move faster just because of what's going on with the government, and you're you're absolutely right.

Speaker 2

So my next piece of news is out of CNBC, and it's about Amazon.

Speaker 2

Amazon's always doing something interesting.

Speaker 2

Every week, there's there's some interesting news about Amazon.

Speaker 2

And in this this one, it's about its plans to launch its low price price platform, which is Amazon Hall.

Speaker 2

This is the, low price platform just available on the mobile app that competes with marketplaces like Timu and Sheehan and TikTok TikTok shop.

Speaker 2

And the article points to the fact that it's going to expand Amazon Hall into Europe later this year, but the news hasn't been confirmed by Amazon.

Speaker 2

Apparently, there were some job listing posted that potentially pointed to this potential expansion.

Speaker 2

So we'll see if it happens, but certainly, it's a really interesting proposition.

Speaker 2

The low price marketplace, Amazon Hall, launched only a few months ago in The US back in November.

Speaker 2

And this is where most products on hauler $20 or less, so lots of low price items.

Speaker 2

It's still in beta in The US market, but I think there's a potential likelihood it could become a bigger piece of the app.

Speaker 2

Amazon, for instance, just started enabling sponsored products and haul search results and also curated storefronts with lifestyle influencers on its homepage.

Speaker 2

So they're experimenting and and kinda seeing seeing where they can take it.

Speaker 1

Really like it, Rachel.

Speaker 1

I think they have to do that given what's happened with the China platforms, although it's a very delicate balance.

Speaker 1

I've heard from a few CPGs that, you know, Amazon just doesn't wanna sort of trade down, you know, more of the premium three p suppliers, the one p, you know, product categories.

Speaker 1

You don't wanna trade them down to, you know, to these haul products necessarily.

Speaker 1

So they're they're learning as well, but it was obviously a necessary strategy.

Speaker 1

Alright.

Speaker 1

My last sort of, look here from CAGNY is just on ecommerce and omnichannel strategies.

Speaker 1

That's really what seemed to be winning for the CPGs that were the star performers.

Speaker 1

And so seamless online purchasing and direct to consumer strategies are essentially now table stakes.

Speaker 1

By the way, US Foods was a star performer with their Moxie digital commerce platform.

Speaker 1

Everyone was talking about it.

Speaker 1

It's so successful.

Speaker 1

It's driving higher order values, customer retention.

Speaker 1

You know, it's more of a b to b platform, but that was so impressive.

Speaker 1

还有Church & Dwight。

And then you had Church into White.

Speaker 1

Church & Dwight,

Church into White, I mean, you wouldn't think about that maybe, but now they have 21% of global revenue coming from ecommerce, another sort of best in class supplier talking about their digital first, you know, ambitions.

Speaker 1

And and, clearly, they have the results, not just the talk track like they're actually doing it.

Speaker 1

And then Nestle had a lot of success showing its AI powered ecommerce capabilities and how that's driving on on line conversion rates by 10% or more.

Speaker 1

So lastly, I would just say three of the standout companies on CAGNY in terms of overall growth, they have the results, and their strategies are just really sound, certainly be Colgate, Palmolive.

Speaker 1

Gosh.

Speaker 1

I mean, just a lot right there.

Speaker 1

Certainly Coca Cola, and then also e.

Speaker 1

L。

L.

Speaker 1

F。

F.

Speaker 1

E。

E.

Speaker 1

L。

L.

Speaker 1

F, as we know, has reinvented beauty, and they had a lot of best practices as well.

Speaker 1

And they're doing kind of you know, they're all these companies are sort of growing volume and margin and, you know, also, like, stock price.

Speaker 1

所以。

So

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I think there's so much more to push the envelope on as it relates to, like, integrating your digital efforts and your physical store efforts, your total storefront.

Speaker 2

And and and with so many of the emerging technologies and generative AI, there's there's a lot more potential there to do that in a in a kind of a bigger way that's actually also making the consumer shopper experience better at the same time.

Speaker 2

So really interesting CAGNY CAGNY learnings, Barry.

Speaker 2

So just finishing up with our news and notes.

Speaker 2

I just this caught my eye.

Speaker 2

This was really interesting to me.

Speaker 2

In Women's Wear Daily, it's about L'Oreal USA divesting the brand Carol's Daughter to an independent entrepreneur.

Speaker 2

And I thought this was interesting because I haven't read a lot of stories of of brands that were acquired by such a a big brands, you know, leading organization like L'Oreal and then put back out sort of into the independent world.

Speaker 2

It's very cool story.

Speaker 2

Carol's Daughter

So Carol's Daughter is a line of of hair care products for women of color that has been part of the L'Oreal portfolio for the last ten years.

Speaker 2

And just recently, L'Oreal announced it was divesting the brand to an independent beauty entrepreneur.

Speaker 2

The brand's founder is a woman by the name of Lisa Price, and she will serve as the president of this new newly kind of independent brand company.

Speaker 2

Lisa's been with L'Oreal this this time this whole time with her brand, and she had a fantastic experience there.

Speaker 2

She talks about in this article how much she'll miss L'Oreal and the team that she was working with there.

Speaker 2

And at the same time, I was excited to go out on her own, especially after a decade of brand building, learning, and all the insights that she gleaned while she was at L'Oreal.

Speaker 2

So Lisa founded Carol's Daughter in her kitchen in Brooklyn back in 1993, and then L'Oreal USA acquired it in 2014, and now it's going back up to be independent again.

Speaker 2

So I just thought that was kind of a really cool cool story of of a brand that continues to to grow, and and it sounds like there's there's a lot more to come there.

Speaker 1

Sounds like it.

Speaker 1

You you see this from time to time where CPG, they just have so many distractions, so many other strategies.

Speaker 1

And, you know, that's not gonna happen when she's running it.

Speaker 1

So, like, we had to check back, you know, six months at the end of year and see where that is.

Speaker 1

But I like the story, Rachel.

Speaker 1

Good one.

Speaker 2

好的,Barry。

Alright, Barry.

Speaker 2

Well, super excited to have Julie Craig back on the podcast.

Speaker 2

Julie

Julie's our VP of shopper insights at Kantar.

Speaker 2

I'm excited to hear some of the latest research.

Speaker 2

Welcome back to the podcast, Julie.

Speaker 0

谢谢,Rachel。

Thanks, Rachel.

Speaker 0

Thanks, Barry.

Speaker 0

It's great to be back with you guys, being all things shopper.

Speaker 2

All things shopper.

Speaker 2

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 2

It's always fun to talk about the shopper and The US shopper and their attitudes and what they're thinking.

Speaker 2

And and, you know, we do a piece of research at Kantar called shopper sightlines.

Speaker 2

And it talks about shoppers' views of the economy and sort of how they're feeling on issues around affordability and things like that.

Speaker 2

And wondered if you can give us the latest scoop on sort of this current shopper thinking in light of the economy, in light of some of the conversations that are happening around tariffs and sort of where do shoppers stand now?

Speaker 0

当然。

Absolutely.

Speaker 0

So it's been it's been a wild ride for shoppers over the last, I would say well, it's been a wild ride since COVID.

Speaker 0

But particularly over the last, you know, six months as the election cycle comes to a close and shoppers kind of figure out they get their footing now that the new administration has come in.

Speaker 0

And our shopper sight line study, as you mentioned, is really designed to try to unpack all of the, you know, all the different layers of macro impacts that affect shoppers, whether that's the economy, as you said, or health care, or job security, home values, all of these things, and tries to tie it to shopping.

Speaker 0

And and what does it mean for shoppers when things change kinda up in that 30,000 foot level?

Speaker 0

And what we've seen, we saw back in our q four wave, shoppers kinda took a breath, and we're like, okay.

Speaker 0

We were feeling at least a little settled.

Speaker 0

We might not you know, the elections may not have gone the way we wanted them to.

Speaker 0

We may be a little, you know, concerned, but at least we had a direction.

Speaker 0

So we saw shoppers kinda take their foot off the gas and kind of relax a little bit and not do as much of the super strict budgeting and sticking to a, you know, a set spending list.

Speaker 0

They we saw them kind of relax a little bit and and be willing to to spend a little more.

Speaker 0

Now and we also saw that they're they were more likely to say, I feel a little bit better about affordability over the next few years.

Speaker 0

The latest data that we've got back is showing kind of an the opposite impact.

Speaker 0

So now that we have tariffs enacted and we're hearing all the conversations in the news about stock market and price of groceries, shoppers are feeling a little concerned more so than they were last quarter.

Speaker 0

So our latest data does show shoppers really with that renewed sense of cautious optimism, saying they're gonna have to watch their spending more.

Speaker 0

They're really concerned about the price of groceries.

Speaker 0

They don't see that going in a a positive direction for them over the next several years.

Speaker 0

So kinda going back a little bit into this austerity mode of, like, buying only what we need, re being a little more concerned about affordability of of the things we buy every day.

Speaker 0

So that's that's a little bit of a peak.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Really interesting, this cautious optimism.

Speaker 2

Julie, curious how you approach the discussion around premiumization as as still a trend.

Speaker 2

Is it, you know, is it that shoppers, they're cautiously optimistic, but they might be willing to spend on a product that inspires them in some way when they're looking at their overall budget?

Speaker 2

Or how do you how do you rectify the two of of shoppers feeling they need to be very cautious, but yet there is a kind of larger trend of around premiumization in the industry?

Speaker 2

And and how do you think about that?

Speaker 0

So it's we talk a lot about this bifurcation of shoppers.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

So there are shoppers who are gonna be, you know, really bare bones, stash their money away, really focused on saving, paying down debt, and and being very strict about that.

Speaker 0

But what is interesting is that while we've seen concerns growing over the last quarter about the affordability of groceries, about the prices of homes, about the prices of health care, we've seen that growing over the last quarter.

Speaker 0

But we've also seen shoppers don't feel like they're they're losing savings.

Speaker 0

They still the same percentage, roughly, feels like they've got a comfortable amount of savings, and those shoppers feel like they're able to spend.

Speaker 0

So even though there is this sense of being really concerned about the way things might be going, there is still that pocket of shoppers that has savings and are spending it on higher quality products, stocking up on things that really speak to them, treating themselves a little bit.

Speaker 0

So we we really do see this sort of separation.

Speaker 0

So there's definitely a shopper that is still very much willing to spend and willing to spend on the right thing.

Speaker 0

Like, when it when it kind of meets that expectation level that they have for high quality product that really speaks to them.

Speaker 0

Of course, there are certain categories where that becomes super, super important.

Speaker 0

But I think it's important that there there is still a shopper with with savings that feels comfortable spending in this environment.

Speaker 2

Well, really interesting as always, Julie.

Speaker 2

Thanks so much for for the conversation.

Speaker 0

Thank you.

Speaker 2

Alright, Barry.

Speaker 2

And she helps brands and executives navigate the evolving retail landscape through thought leadership and advisory work.

Speaker 2

And I just followed your podcast, Kiri.

Speaker 2

Super excited to to listen in every day and really happy to welcome you to the podcast today.

Speaker 3

Thank you so much, Rachel.

Speaker 3

It's great to be here.

Speaker 2

So I'd love to just kind of kick off with the conversation just on the theme of AI and retail media.

Speaker 2

And, Kiri, you're one of the foremost experts in how brands can drive growth across the digital commerce landscape.

Speaker 2

And one of these levers is retail media.

Speaker 2

And, you know, recently, there's been powerfully transformative AI agents that have launched that have really the potential that changed the game in retail media.

Speaker 2

One of these being OpenAI's operator.

Speaker 2

And wondered if you can talk more about this and, you know, what it means for the future of retail media networks.

Speaker 3

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 3

当然

Absolutely.

Speaker 3

I think it it is we're we're very early on in in in this journey.

Speaker 3

OpenAI Operator

OpenAI Operator really it just came out this year, and I I can't wait.

Speaker 3

We're recording this in February.

Speaker 3

I can't believe we're just still in February with all the crazy stuff that's happened this year.

Speaker 3

So when when we talk about AI agents, there's a couple of different perspectives to take.

Speaker 3

So an agent as opposed to generative AI is an AI that will perform actions on your behalf rather than generative generative AI will you know, you do a prompt and it will produce something.

Speaker 3

You have to go and decide what to do with it.

Speaker 3

Whereas with agentic AI, it will take a series of actions.

Speaker 3

You'll give it an objective, and it will go and do those things.

Speaker 3

It will take multiple steps in most in most instances.

Speaker 3

So we can look at that from you know, we've got agents now on the b to b side helping you with your marketing objectives.

Speaker 3

Like, for example, there's a company I'm working with, Xnerta, who that they're an Amazon and Walmart ads ad tech solution that's agentic.

Speaker 3

You give it the outcome that you to to achieve, and the technology will go and, like, take multiple steps and interpret the data and and take actions based on that.

Speaker 3

And then on the consumer side and this is what OpenAI's operator is, is it's a sort of a a consumer AI agent.

Speaker 3

And so you can get it to call restaurants and make bookings for you.

Speaker 3

It can go shop your groceries for you.

Speaker 3

And this is a use case that as soon as I saw the, you know, the go and shop your grocery list for you.

Speaker 3

Ding ding ding.

Speaker 3

Everything's going off.

Speaker 3

What what this mean?

Speaker 3

And it is it's very interesting to think about look.

Speaker 3

It's the it's a little janky.

Speaker 3

It's $200 a month for operator.

Speaker 3

We are at the very, very early stages of the innovators of the, you know, maturity curve of this technology.

Speaker 3

That said, just looking at what is possible right now today, I can tell OpenAI operator, here are the four meals that I wanna make this week, create a grocery list, and then go do some comparison shopping at these, you know, different retailers near me and build a basket, find out which grocer has the best sort of basket total, and check out for me.

Speaker 3

And it will go and do that today.

Speaker 3

So I think we're looking at a world where we're using agents as a tool for our work and to automate things that are time consuming or difficult or, like, you know, take take a lot of work to do.

Speaker 3

And then we're also gonna have our personal AI agents that are going to facilitate some of the grunt work in our in our daily lives, and some of that will be shopping behaviors as well.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

That's really interesting.

Speaker 2

I mean, because it is really you know, at the end of the day, we do so much research in on shoppers.

Speaker 2

And always at the top of the list is convenience.

Speaker 2

Like, shoppers are willing to pay a little bit more just to have that convenience because people's lives are just so much busier than they've ever been, and there's so many balls everyone has in the air all the time.

Speaker 2

And, how awesome is that to have up your own personal assistant at your fingertips, whether it's personal errands, but also in the retail space and in in in doing your shopping for you.

Speaker 2

So that's super cool.

Speaker 2

I wonder, how can retailers leverage this?

Speaker 2

Like, what what should retailers be thinking about, as even though we're in the early adopter stage for this type of technology, it will become big very quickly.

Speaker 2

What are some things retailers should be thinking about to to leverage leverage this technology?

Speaker 3

Well, I think we're looking at a at a scenario where retailers fortheir.com will need to think about optimizing their website for humans and then path to optimize for AI agents.

Speaker 3

And that sort of the path and the the the functionality and the format and the journey might look a little bit different.

Speaker 3

And I think the immediate thing to understand right now is you could make a decision to block all the bots and say, no.

Speaker 3

We're not gonna participate in this.

Speaker 3

I I think we will see a a lot of this, but it will be sort of short lived is, like, we don't we don't like this.

Speaker 3

This is too new, and we we don't we don't like it.

Speaker 3

We're gonna we're gonna stop it.

Speaker 3

But I think as, you know, as as adoption continues, and this is how a lot of people are gonna prefer to take certain shopping actions, some retailers who immediately take that step will say that they're, you know, missing out on some opportunities.

Speaker 3

And this is just the way that some consumers prefer to interact with brands and retailers.

Speaker 3

But for a retailer that takes the takes the position that this is just a new way for people to shop and engage with me, it is optimizing the site and product content and the journey for AI as well.

Speaker 3

So looking at what's gonna make it as easy as possible for an agent to search on the site to find what they're looking for.

Speaker 3

Do I have the, you know, product taxonomy and product information available?

Speaker 3

Is it you know, am I making things easy for an agent to actually interact with me as a retailer online?

Speaker 2

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 2

Totally.

Speaker 2

And even though this is an early adopters phase, this technology is moving so quickly and it's already you know, many brands are capitalizing on generative AI in general to support not only kind of back end efficiencies from a supply chain side, but innovation and concept testing and getting products out in the marketplace faster.

Speaker 2

And this is sort of on the customer experience side of of supporting customers in their, you know, quest for convenience and just more opportunities to, find products and make their lives easier.

Speaker 2

So, the retailers, you know, we always say for our you know, for any brand or retailer is quickly at least start testing and learning and understanding your position and and how what that interface looks like with the new technology.

Speaker 2

And because it's moving so fast, if you don't quickly take some actions to understand what's happening and how it will affect you and how you can leverage and capitalize, you're quickly left behind because it's moving so quickly.

Speaker 2

So I totally agree with you.

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

当然。

Absolutely.

Speaker 3

And I think, you know, if if you look at the position that we're gonna have our personal agents here, what can you do how how can you communicate back to the agent as well?

Speaker 3

Like, oh, you have you know, you're you're at this loyalty tier and you, you know, you need to achieve 500 more points before you get to the next loyalty tier.

Speaker 3

Or would you let I I just think if we there's there's ways to be so creative here.

Speaker 3

Would you like, you know, samples to be added at your grocery pickup?

Speaker 3

So I I think that the the future is exciting.

Speaker 3

It's it's not something to be, you know, to look at fearfully.

Speaker 3

It is a new it's ultimately a new channel and a way to connect with consumers that can be that can be really interesting.

Speaker 2

Agree.

Speaker 2

And you mentioned earlier in our conversation these AgenTic AI, these agents aren't they're autonomous and and and working behind the scenes autonomous autonomously to support you.

Speaker 2

But that doesn't mean that you might you mentioned, you know, you might have a favorite retailer or favorite brands that you always wanna make sure are part of the consideration set of that, of that AI agent.

Speaker 2

So it's still that's still a critical piece.

Speaker 2

It's not all automated, and I think that's an important part too.

Speaker 2

It's more using it to your advantage.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

And I and I think people hear, like, autonomous, like, oh, the AI is gonna decide what I eat every day.

Speaker 3

And it's like, well, I am the AI is gonna learn my preferences.

Speaker 3

They're gonna learn that I you know, what my what my preferences are, where I like to shop, like, what are my favorite brands, when they can substitute a house brand for a national brand.

Speaker 3

Like, I I'm not gonna give up my national brand coffee or whatever it is.

Speaker 3

And, you know and so these are all preferences.

Speaker 3

It's it doesn't mean that the end of advertising, it doesn't mean the end of retailers.

Speaker 3

It's just a new way that consumers are going to interact with retailers.

Speaker 3

And this is an this is on the generative AI side.

Speaker 3

It's not an agent, but my husband is very picky with his clothes, and he was looking for, you know, trying to trying to buy some new t shirts.

Speaker 3

And he went to to chat JBT to put in all of his preferences.

Speaker 3

I like a classic fit.

Speaker 3

I want it to be, you know, you know, this type of fabric.

Speaker 3

I want it to be I'm I'm prepared to pay a premium for this.

Speaker 3

And ChatGeeBT came back with a number of different brands and retailers that he hadn't considered before.

Speaker 3

So I think, you know, that that is a boon to those brands and retailers who had the content and made it easy enough for AI to discover that their brand is, you know you know, made this way or, like, styled this way or whatever the attributes that he was looking for.

Speaker 3

So it is just it it's a new discovery mechanism and a new way way to interact.

Speaker 2

对。

Yes.

Speaker 2

I think that's a really key point.

Speaker 2

That's that's really key.

Speaker 2

I wanted to shift a little bit because some exciting news just happened with Amazon and and Rufus.

Speaker 2

And their the AI patent was discovered.

Speaker 2

And Oh, yeah.

Speaker 2

There's a lot there's just potential just overall to change how Amazon connects products with shoppers.

Speaker 2

But just wondering if you could talk a little bit more about that.

Speaker 2

And and particularly, like, what does this mean for the future of search?

Speaker 3

对。

Yes.

Speaker 3

It's so exciting.

Speaker 3

So for those familiar with the Amazon ecosystem, we've been using Amazon has a a search ranking algorithm called a nine, and that's what we've been optimizing for, like, before I even got in this game in in 2015.

Speaker 3

We're optimizing for a nine, which was your keyword relevance, product, you know, sell through rate, and conversions.

Speaker 3

So among other factors.

Speaker 3

But really, like, the keyword relevance was was so important, and that can be you know, that would lead to keyword stuffing and this pretty awful customer experience.

Speaker 3

I'm sure you've seen Rachel where you're searching for something, and something will show up that's been so keyword stuff.

Speaker 3

Do you have no idea what it actually is?

Speaker 3

And you don't know what is gonna show up if you order this thing because it's just been so over overengineered.

Speaker 3

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 3

And so Rufus sorry.

Speaker 3

Rufus

The the the technology behind Rufus and the way that it is surfacing results to customers is different.

Speaker 3

We're we're not we're not gonna be just optimizing for the a nine algorithm before anymore.

Speaker 3

Rufus

So there's a couple of three foundational pillars to Rufus' core technology and how it actually indexes products.

Speaker 3

So the first is called the semantic similarity model.

Speaker 3

And so this is moving from keyword matching to understanding the context of a product and meaning in a natural language.

Speaker 3

对

So Mhmm.

Speaker 3

But I'm sure we'll get a link link up to the report and the original authors of this, which is brilliant.

Speaker 3

But the example that they give is, how do you take off gel nails?

Speaker 3

Rufus

And Rufus isn't gonna go and look for gel nails or gel nail enamel or whatever.

Speaker 3

It's going to understand that pure acetone is a solution to that question.

Speaker 3

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 3

And it will make these bridges semantic bridges to relevant products.

Speaker 3

So that is that's a pretty that's a pretty huge move to go from, you know, keyword to actually interpreting the semantic link between, you know, products products and questions or or or issues there.

Speaker 3

Well, the second is called click training, and that is essentially learning from all of our activity which products customers actually click on after specific queries.

Speaker 3

So this is his feedback loop that Rufus is gonna understand which products really solve the customer problems.

Speaker 3

And so it's gonna be learning from all of these interactions.

Speaker 3

And then finally, something really exciting is called visual label tagging.

Speaker 3

And so this is looking at images and comprehending what they mean.

Speaker 3

So what context is this product used in, maybe, you know, diagrams, relative sizes, how it's used, the steps of, you know, of constructing an item or what whatever it is.

Speaker 3

So it's understanding products just beyond their written descriptions and looking at actual images to interpret what it is, how it's used, who it's for.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

It's so cool.

Speaker 2

I mean, it just and you can see how that's transforming search innately because it's giving the shopper just better information overall and also doing it seamlessly.

Speaker 2

So you don't have to work as hard to to get what you need as a shopper from a shopper perspective.

Speaker 3

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

And I I mean, people should you should just play around with this and see how it works.

Speaker 3

I did a search for I need a notebook that's gonna fit in my pocket.

Speaker 3

And it surfaced, you know, a a number of different products.

Speaker 3

An ad was in there.

Speaker 3

We should definitely talk about that.

Speaker 3

Ads ads ads are gonna find their way in.

Speaker 3

Don't worry.

Speaker 2

Never fear.

Speaker 2

And the the options

Speaker 3

that Rufus gave me were quite different to the option then I went and searched a pocket sized notebook, and I got quite different results in the standard search experience.

Speaker 3

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 3

So this is I mean, I I I think as as we get to talking about what do we do now, like, we're talking about all this sort of futuristic stuff.

Speaker 3

I'm not gonna just, you know retailers not just gonna redesign their website for agents tomorrow.

Speaker 3

But what can we do right now?

Speaker 3

One of them is just to be looking looking using this behavior as a consumer and looking at what what when I search for this, what do I find on Rufus versus what do I find in search?

Speaker 3

I think it's a great place to start to learn about how this is actually working in real life.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Fantastic.

Speaker 2

Well, just to finish up, that was actually gonna be one of my my one of my last questions.

Speaker 2

Is there anything else that you that you would say that a brand or retailer should do today to set them selves up for success in the future.

Speaker 2

So one for sure is just start start using it.

Speaker 2

Start practicing.

Speaker 2

Start seeing what it offers you as you're using the tool.

Speaker 2

Anything else you might say or anything else that you'd like to share with the audience before we close?

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

当然。

Certainly.

Speaker 3

I'd I there's a miniseries that I'm doing on the Retail Media Breakfast Club.

Speaker 3

If people wanna check it out, I'm I'm having a a a series of discussions with an a CPG AI expert, Lauren Shivani.

Speaker 3

And we're talking about, like, how to get started with this and what it means and agents, etcetera.

Speaker 3

So if you wanna dive a little more into this topic, certainly check that out.

Speaker 3

But something that Lauren suggested in her work, she works with a lot of large CPGs and retailers, and she recommends people get started with personal use cases and work use cases.

Speaker 3

And the very best way to to get started with this and and start to feel a little less overwhelmed and more like this is working for you rather than just another thing to add to your list is to start using this technology personally to you know, so many use cases abound.

Speaker 3

One of another great tip that she had is use using generative AI to tell you what to do what tell you what to do.

Speaker 3

对。

Hey.

Speaker 3

I am I am a brand marketer at a mid sized CPG brand.

Speaker 3

You know, what should I how should I be thinking about this?

Speaker 3

How can I you you give me a plan?

Speaker 3

You tell me what what I should do and and actually getting some insight there.

Speaker 3

So using it personally and using it, and and then also, like, looking at how is it surfacing your brand?

Speaker 3

How is ChatGPT?

Speaker 3

Like, would you take a photo of your product with ChatGPT and ask it how what is this?

Speaker 3

What does it say?

Speaker 3

It's just fascinating.

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

So that's really, you know, how to get started today, I think.

Speaker 2

I think that's really good advice.

Speaker 2

Excellent advice.

Speaker 2

It's just dive in and just take it step by step and just explore explore what's out there.

Speaker 2

And you'll be able to better understand how to use utilize it not only personally, but then applying it to your business as well.

Speaker 2

So well, Kiri, it was just wonderful to have you on.

Speaker 2

Thanks so much.

Speaker 2

I know you're in Australia and we're here in The US and the time changes is is vast and but really appreciate you working out.

Speaker 2

I know it's very early in the morning for you, but super happy you joined us.

Speaker 3

Great to speak with you, Rachel.

Speaker 3

Thank you for having me.

Speaker 2

Thank you very much.

Speaker 2

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 2

Well, fantastic discussion with Kiri.

Speaker 2

And for our audience, I just wanna leave you with our top five takeaways from our conversation.

Speaker 2

And the first is that AI agents will transform retail media.

Speaker 2

So Kiri talked about OpenAI operator, which is an AI agent can perform tasks like shopping for groceries for you on your behalf.

Speaker 2

She highlighted its potential to automate time consuming tasks and its implications for the future retail media networks even though it's in the early stages.

Speaker 2

AI agents will significantly impact how consumers interact with retailers overall.

Speaker 2

Number two, retailers are, you know, leaning in and leveraging AI, and we discussed how retailers can leverage AI technology by optimizing their websites for both humans and AI agents.

Speaker 2

And Kiri suggested that retailers should make their product taxonomy and information easily accessible for AI agents to interact with their sites.

Speaker 2

And she also highlighted how some consumers will prefer interacting with retailers through AI agents.

Speaker 2

Retailers that adapt to consumer preferences around AI by optimizing their sites for AI agents will likely gain a competitive advantage.

Speaker 2

Number three, we talked about Amazon's AI patent and the recent patent discovery, which has the potential to change how Amazon connects products with shoppers.

Speaker 2

Kiri talked about these three foundational pillars of Rufus, Amazon's new search ranking algorithm, and its implications for the future of search.

Speaker 2

The pillars aim to improve product discovery and relevance in search results.

Speaker 2

Number four, we touched upon a bit the future of retail search, and Kiri described how Rufus will transform search by moving from keyword matching to really understanding the context and the meaning of the products in your natural language.

Speaker 2

She also emphasized the importance of retailers optimizing their content for AI to improve product discovery and resulting also in more relevance and just accurate search results for shoppers.

Speaker 2

And number five, we address some practical steps for retailers.

Speaker 2

Talked Kiri and I talked about practical steps that retailers can do to set themselves up for success with AI technology.

Speaker 2

And one of those is just starting with personal use cases and just exploring how AI services, their brands and products.

Speaker 2

好了,Barry。

Alright, Barry.

Speaker 2

Well, that brings us to the end of this episode.

Speaker 2
