On the morning of 06/08/2005 in the Yeongdo district of Busan, a man was growing increasingly anxious.
He hadn't heard from his wife and she wasn't answering his calls.
He always spoke to his wife.
They had a routine where they always called each other at least every other day, but mostly every day since he was working construction in a different city.
This was their way of staying connected and checking in on each other.
He was getting worried.
What if she's hurt?
Or what if she's mad at me?
Or what if something bad happened?
He called his closest friend, someone who knew him and his wife very well.
He asked the friend to visit their house and check-in on her.
When the friend called him back a short while later, he said the front door is locked.
And despite knocking multiple times and calling out to her, there is no answer.
They didn't have a key hidden outside anywhere.
So he had to think of something else.
He made another call.
This time to the owner of the Chinese restaurant located on the 1st Floor of the building they lived in.
Because their building was older, the restaurant on the 1st Floor had an internal service hatch that connected to their home on the 2nd Floor.
The restaurant owner could hear how terrified he was and agreed to go up into their home.
The owner squeezed through the narrow passage and despite it being 10AM in the morning, the home was pitch black.
When he tried to turn on a light switch, he discovered that there was no power.
The one thing he could discern in the darkness was that there was a very strong metallic scent coming from a large pile of blankets and clothes in the main bedroom.
The shape of the pile concerned him, so he pulled back the blankets and found Seo Youngja dead from multiple stab wounds.
When the police arrived, there was a single set of small shoe prints leading away from the body in blood, leaving investigators to believe her murderer was a woman.

The victim discovered under the blankets was 63 year old missus Seo, who we will use the pseudonym Seo Youngja.
For the last four years, she'd been living alone in the 2nd Floor apartment above the Chinese restaurant in Busan.
Her husband, Lee Mansoo, worked hundreds of miles away in Seoul, the complete opposite end of the country.
But they had a good marriage and Youngja's life was quiet.
She had everything she needed.
But being isolated in Busan away from your husband led to her feeling lonely, and loneliness opened the door for another man to come in.
Was a 67 year old carpenter who had known Lee Mansoo since they were children.
They grew up in the same village and remained inseparable best friends for forty years.
In his forties, Lee Mansoo moved away for work.
Mansoo always felt like Jongyeol was a part of his family, and he felt safe knowing that Jongyeol lives so close to Youngja in Busan.
Na Jongyeol was, however, also lonely.
He was a devout Buddhist who was known as a very hard worker and everyone in the neighborhood knew him very well.
Three years prior in 2,002, Jong Yeol was treated as a widower when his 58 year old wife, Seo Young, which is a pseudonym.
She ran away with a younger man to escape massive debts that she had racked up due to a gambling addiction.
She left behind her three grown children, and Jong Yeon was left to tell all of his family and neighbors the shameful story that his wife left him.
All three of their adult children had already moved out.
They had families of their own in different cities, but they'd also known about their parents' history of gambling.
They never heard from her again and she would never try to reach out.
Na Jong Yul was living alone now, checking in on his childhood best friend's wife from time to time who he'd grown close to as well.
And their shared loneliness turned into an affair that was a source of love as much as it was a source of financial support for Youngja.
For five years, they carried on this secret affair.
They were secretly living as if they themselves were a married couple.
For the first two years, keep in mind, that's when he was still living with his wife, Heejang.
She hadn't left him yet.
Meanwhile, Youngja was cooking him dinners, side dishes, lunches for work.
And in return, Jongul would give her money as an allowance.
To them, it wasn't really a transactional relationship.
This was just them living domestically.
Jong Yul wasn't giving her like large sums of money each time.
It was just what he could afford to give her to treat her.
He was a successful carpenter, but he made a very modest amount in wages.
Over the next five years, he had given her nearly a 100,000,000 won, which is about 70,000 US dollars.
She was mainly using this money to pay for her children's education and any leftover money she was using for herself.
By early two thousand five, the situation started to change.
Na Jungho
Na Jungho's younger brother needed help because his business was failing.
So he helped bail his business out by giving his brother 50,000,000 won.
He asked Youngja, I need some money.
Please loan me back some of the money that I've given you over the years.
Just 5% maybe.
He knew that she had a good amount of savings too and that her husband, Iman Seo, had savings as well.
Why he didn't reach out to his best friend?
I don't know.
But she refused to give him anything.
She said that that was her money.
They were gifts, not loans.
Their conversation started turning into arguments, and then the affair began to fall apart.
Jong Yao felt like he was always giving in their relationship, but now she completely changed.
She allegedly started mocking his desperation and began insulting his masculinity.
She called him petty for asking for the money back.
He had spent years hiding their affair from his best friend and his younger brother is relying on him for help.
Now Youngja's coldly refusing to help him.
He's feeling like this is the final straw.
And honestly, he turned on her quickly.
They start having big arguments over money at the May.
And by the May 2005, he's starting to think of ways to hurt her.
He's blinded by anger.
And on May 28, Na Jong Yul sneaks into Youngja's house, which they'd been having an affair in for over five years.
He likely did have a key to her home.
So keep that in mind.
He sneaks in carrying five liters of paint thinner that he took from his carpentry workshop.
He starts pouring the thinner all over the entryway in the wooden floors of the apartment.
Then standing in the entryway of her home, he sets the apartment on fire.
He expected the fire to go up so quickly that she wouldn't be able to escape.
But she wakes up immediately and calls 119 after escaping.
She's unhurt and confused.
And John Youngja shows up the next day acting just as confused.
He's there for her and her time of need for this freak accident, he calls it.
He replaces the burnt flooring panels and wallpaper in her home for free like a nice friend.
The fire actually didn't end up doing very much damage before the fire department arrived.
And he's repairing her flooring, fixing the wallpaper, doing all these favors for her, knowing damn well that he had just tried to murder her.
And the entire time, he's still planning how he's going to try again.
Ten days later, he finalizes his plans and decides I'm going to try again.
June 8, he's been following Youngja's schedule perfectly and the schedule of the traffic around her home as well.
He knew she'd been returning home between 1AM and 2AM from helping the restaurant downstairs.
She'd been working there for some extra spending money.
During her shift, Zhang Yeo snuck into her upstairs apartment and waited for her in the dark.
When she got home, he surprised her and started to intimidate her for money.
He's telling her, I need 5,000,000 won now.
Just a few thousand dollars.
Just a fraction of what he'd given her over the years.
Youngja
Youngja again refused.
She isn't suspecting that he's gonna hurt her.
That's her best friend.
Her husband's best friend as well.
A man who she's called a lover for five years.
To her, she's starting to dislike him because of the neediness.
And she never expected to have to repay gifts that he gave her.
And he's also continuing to pressure her until she starts mocking him for failing to provide for his own family.
It's not a healthy argument they're in.
They've just descended at this point into personal attacks.
But Najong Yul had planned what would happen if she refused again.
He goes and flips her circuit breaker, plunging the entire apartment into darkness.
She's confused and yelling at him, but she can't see that he has pulled out a kitchen knife that he brought with him.
He grabs her and begins stabbing her repeatedly.
Jong Ju would end up stabbing her 25 times.
14 of the stab wounds would be on her face and head.
The remaining would be on her arms and upper body where it struck as she was trying to defend herself.
Forensic evidence showed very clearly that Youngja fought hard.
She sustained the stab wounds to her arms all while having been stabbed in the head already multiple times.
And still, she was able to scratch Jong hard enough to leave marks through his clothing.
And it is thanks to these scratch marks that we know what happened that day.
Jong had prepared for what he would do afterwards.
He came prepared to cover up his crimes.
He wore gloves and he had even thought about how he would stage the scene to make the evidence not point to him.
Remember in the opening, we talked about the investigators believing that the killer was a woman.
Well, Jong had shoved his feet into a pair of size two hundred and forty women's hiking boots.
That's US size seven or EU size thirty seven.
He wore a size US men's eight for comparison or an EU size forty one.
He wanted to make sure that the very clear bloody boot prints he left behind did not match him.
When the police did arrive, they saw the boot prints with a star patterned sole belonging to a woman's hiking boot leading away from the body and immediately assumed that the attacker was a woman or at least a person with very small feet.
Before Jongle left the crime scene, he decided last minute to grab blankets from her closet and clothes from her dresser to just pile them on top of her.
This is what we call undoing in criminology.
He is symbolically doing something that reverses or undoes the crimes in his eyes.
It hides it from him.
According to a study conducted in 2017 by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, fifty five percent of homicides in their study that had acts of symbolic undoing, the killer used a blanket to cover the victim's body.
Fifty five percent of them also positioned the body differently.
Of murderers who symbolically are trying to undo their crimes, A majority are family members or are in a relationship with the victim.
Immediately after killing the victim, they feel an overwhelming sense of guilt and need a way to hide their crimes even from themselves.
Jong Yeon fits into these categories.
He's trying to mentally compensate for the remorse he has of killing Youngja.
And when he leaves the apartment, in his head, he's walking away from the crime, mentally severing his connection to what he'd done.
The next morning, Lee Mansoo, who is Youngja's husband, he's been living and working in Seoul across the country.
He calls her for their regular check-in.
Despite Youngja having an affair, she has still made sure that she calls her husband at least every other day, if not every day.
In the sphere of true crime, we don't often talk about victims in a negative way.
We don't often talk about cases that have a lot of negativity around the victim.
But remember, people are not one dimensional.
People are not wholly good.
They're not entirely evil.
People are human.
They have faults.
But what we're not going to do is we're not going to suggest that Youngja deserved to die because she was cheating on her husband.
Absolutely not.
When Mansoo calls Youngja and doesn't get an answer all day, he starts to worry about her.
I mean, Youngja is 63 years old.
I worry when my husband doesn't answer my calls and he's not even a fall risk yet.
Mansoo called Youngja repeatedly for hours.
And when he had to accept the fact that maybe something did happen, he called his best friend, Jong Yeon.
Jong Yeon answered his call so casually and Mansoo is panicked.
He asked Jung Yeon, please go visit my home.
Check on Youngja.
And Jung Yeon acts like he's doing his friend a favor.
Knowing that Youngja is already dead.
Jung Yeon even walks over to Youngja's apartment, tries to open the apartment door, knocks on it loudly so everyone hears him.
He calls Mansoo back and says, it doesn't seem like she's home because no one's answering the door, which is a lie and he knows it.
He's just trying to play the part of the concerned friend, and he's giving himself kind of an alibi.
He doesn't expect Mansoo to call the Chinese restaurant on the 1st Floor and beg them to enter his apartment.
When the restaurant owner does get into the apartment, he finds the power is off.
It's pitch black inside, and it smells nauseatingly like metal.
He followed the smell into the main bedroom where he found the giant pile of blankets and clothing heaped on the floor, which is suspiciously large.
When he pulled back one of the comforters, he found Youngja's body.
The owner said he ran back to the service hatch, back to the restaurant, and called the police.
The police arrived and immediately started preserving the crime scene, which included those small boot prints.
Based on those 240 millimeter prints, the Youngja police narrowed their search for women or a man with very small feet.
They first looked at a local debtor who had disappeared recently, and they wondered if somehow Youngja had taken out debts and was killed for repayment.
But this didn't end up leading anywhere.
Then, of course, they suspected Lee Mansoo, her husband.
The spouse is always a suspect, but he had a very solid alibi.
He was at work hundreds of miles away, and was on CCTV going home during the time of the crime.
He hadn't made any large purchases or money transfers, which meant it likely wasn't a hired hit on his wife.
The police also looked at the restaurant owner and all of their employees because they did have that service hatch that went into the apartment where someone could sneak in and out of unnoticed.
While they were conducting these interviews, they also questioned Na Jong il.
Inspector Seo Moo sung of the Busan Yongdo police noticed something that just didn't sit right with him.
It had been days since the case, and typically people close to the victim are involved in the case.
But Jong Un was even more concerned about the investigation than Mansoo or Youngja's family.
Yes, he's a grieving friend, but he was acting obsessed about the case.
He was constantly calling the police to check-in on the investigation, asking for updates, showing up whenever they revisited the house just to watch them.
He kept saying he wanted to be supportive, and that since Mansoo couldn't come down yet due to work, he would be there for his friend and keep him updated.
Of course, the police told him this is not necessary.
They could contact Lee Mansoo themselves.
But Jungyeol insisted.
One of the most disgusting details is how he acted during Youngja's funeral.
He led the funeral actually.
Mansoo was there mourning his wife, whom at this point he didn't know had been cheating on him.
And his best friend, Jongyeol, is hunched over on the ground, clutching her portrait and wailing so loudly that people are saying they're being moved by his emotional vulnerability.
He then went with Mansoo to the burial site and comforted Mansoo in the days after, all while knowing he was the one who brutally stabbed Youngja to death.
I think Jongro was probably overwhelmed by both his own guilt and concern that he would be caught.
He had prepared to not leave any DNA behind.
He planned the shoe trick to keep them off of his track.
He wore gloves during the attack.
But when the forensic team came in, the female killer theory went out the window.
Youngja had skin cells under her fingernails from when she scratched Jong Yul.
It would take a while to analyze the DNA of any skin cells.
So in the meantime, they started inspecting the restaurant workers and Jong Yul for scratch marks.
As they kept Jong Yul in an interrogation room for hours, he pushed up his sleeves, revealing multiple scratch marks that were scabbing over.
When Jungja realized the mistake he'd made by revealing the scratch marks, he had an excuse ready.
He told the officers that he had been helping Youngja at the grocery store a few days prior, and that she had accidentally scratched him when she tried to grab some heavy bags out of his hands.
They knew that if they wanted to break Jungyeon, they had to break his confidence and make him lose his cool.
So they visited the grocery store and asked to check their CCTV only for the manager to tell them, we are closed that day.
We are always closed that day.
It's a regular scheduled day off.
This is a pretty typical thing in Korea.
There are certain days of the week that franchise or like chain grocery stores have to be closed to influence people to shop locally.
They'd caught Jong in his lies, and now they needed to get a confession or find the murder weapon.
The investigators started looking into Jong il's life to find red flags.
Did he really have a motive to kill Youngja?
Well, Jonger telling the police that he was living in poverty, they found out that he had been paying over 200,000 won or about a $100 for four separate life insurance policies monthly in his wife Heejang's name.
So about $400 a month were going to life insurance policies for his ex wife who left him.
And they're still married because she left him, but they never got divorced.
She was just gone.
The police discovered that he had told everyone she ran off with another man after going into deep gambling debt, but no one had ever seen her since.
He Jiang had no activity on file at all, including the obvious ways to track someone who isn't in hiding, like bank activity, tax records, or social media presence even.
She didn't contact any family, including her four kids.
She was missing and Joong Joon had actually secretly filed a missing person's report for her without telling anyone.
If a person is missing for five years, they're legally declared dead, which would allow Jong Un to collect on all four of those life insurance policies.
At this point, it had been three years since Hee Jung's disappearance.
The insurance agent for the policies told the police that Jong Un had requested an exact timeline of when he might expect to receive the payout.
Inspector Seo Youngja had everything he needed at this point to put pressure on Jong Un.
At first, he doesn't think it's working though.
Jong Un is doing such a good job at keeping calm.
After a very long day of interrogation, he ends up bringing Jongjo a paper cup of water.
When Jongjo reached out to take the cup, despite acting so calm, his hands are shaking so badly that when he grasped the cup, he crushed it and spilled water all over himself.
Inspector Seo would later tell KBS in an interview that he was so tense that he crushed the cup to the point that it spilled.
He was trying with all of his might to keep his hands from shaking.
At that moment, I had a conviction.
At the end of the investigation, inspector Seo decided to focus on Jongyeol's Buddhist faith.
He flat out told him that karma is coming for you and your children if you are lying to us.
And that the only way to achieve peace was to tell the truth or him and his children would suffer.
Now Jung Yor just seemed moved by this more than anything else he'd said.
And he just asked for a cigarette, and he'd tell them everything.
When he finally received the cigarette, he coldly said, the body is in the floor.
My wife, she's still in the house.
Jong Joon had been a carpenter for thirty years.
When the police entered his home to find Hee Jong's body, they found that he had perfectly concealed her burial spot.
He had been living with her body in his house for three years, ever since 10/28/2002.
Jong Yul had been arguing with Hee Jong in his woodworking shop behind their house.
According to Jong Yul, Hee Jong was yelling at him about his gambling habits and calling out him for being financially incompetent.
He says that in a fit of rage, he started to strangle her.
He couldn't stop himself.
And before he knew it, she was dead.
He was immediately overcome by regret and decided he would just cover up his crimes.
He started a construction project on the house by digging up the floor to his bedroom and then placed Hee Jung's body beneath.
He didn't want her body to cause damage to the floors or to smell, so he wrapped her in a very thick vinyl plastic and sealed it using a professional grade sealant that he used in his woodworking.
Then he placed her in the ground.
He poured a heavy layer of concrete over her body.
And once it set, he placed new flooring on top.
Three months later in January 2003, he starts to get worried.
What if I ever move?
Her body's gonna be found.
So he uses his construction tools to dig up her body and move it to the entrance of the home.
But the entrance of the home is too narrow to fit her entire body.
So he started to dismember her body and rebury her under the living room entrance by the front door.
But he didn't bury all of her there.
He kept her head with him, returned it to the bedroom where he buried it directly under his bed.
And her body wouldn't be found until nine hundred and sixty days later when the police started digging up the floors due to his confession.
He was sleeping over her body.
He had people over to his house.
No one had any clue what he'd done.
They wholeheartedly believe that she had just run away with some other man.
He was playing the sad Buddhist ex husband whose wife left him for a more successful man due to her gambling.
And he even fed that story to their children.
He was even checking in on the missing person's report every once in a while to look like he cared about her.
And it turns out, he was the one with the gambling debt.
He was the one having the affair.
The prosecution's case against Na Jeong Yeon at this point was incredibly easy.
They had all the forensic evidence and his confession.
They also had his DNA under Youngja's nails.
And for the murder of Hee Jung, they had a confession and her remains.
They went through the events much like we have here, and they focused heavily on how he had lived with her body under his floors.
His defense wasn't that he hadn't committed these crimes, but that at the age of 67, he shouldn't spend the rest of his natural life in prison.
The prosecution claimed that both killings were crimes of passion, where he suddenly killed these women in fits of rage, And therefore, he was a danger to society.
He couldn't handle rejection or criticism without homicidal rage.
And because of this, he was given fifteen years in prison.
At this age, it's very similar to a life in prison sentence, I suppose.
You would think he was unlikely to live to be 82 in prison, but he did.
In 2020, at the age of 82, he was released from prison.
With privacy laws and such, we don't have an update on him now.
We don't even know if he's still alive.
But in 2005, after admitting to the two murders, after explaining how he dismembered his wife and lied to his children, how he had an affair with his best friend's wife and murdered her over money, he didn't ask to make a statement to his family or apologize to his children or apologize to Iman Seo.
没有。
No.
He asked the prosecution for one favor, only one favor.
He asked them to take care of his flower garden.
He had spent years planting and tending to the flowers in his garden.
And now that he's going to prison, it's the only thing he cares about.
But what interests me most in this case is why Jongyeol killed either of these women.
With Heejang, he said the argument was about finances, and it devolved into her criticizing him for gambling and calling him financially incompetent.
With Youngja, almost exactly the same.
She's refusing to give back the money he gifted her, and she's criticizing his financial instability.
And allegedly, she was attacking his masculinity.
In both cases, the trigger for violence was rejection and humiliation.
It was women looking down on him or at least him thinking the women were looking down on him.
What I see here is a man who is unable to accept rejection and that women were not allowed to criticize him.
What we can't know is what he was saying to them, what he was saying back to them, whether he was equally as harsh, or if either of these women actually were criticizing him at all, or if he was twisting their words against them.
To him, the second these women criticized him or he believed they were judging him, they were making him feel shame, which he did not want.
He couldn't accept that.
And his violence, which was always in retaliation, that might explain why Youngja was stabbed 25 times.
He couldn't psychologically tolerate humiliation.
His fragile sense of self depended on being seen as needed, respected, and being in control.
He did this by financially providing for these women.
But when Heejong and Youngja both confronted his failures, aka him gambling and creating debt for the family or him begging for gifts back.
He couldn't control his feelings.
He had an outburst, which is what we call a crime of passion.
But in Youngja's case, I wouldn't say it was a crime of passion.
The murder was planned.
He tried to burn her alive in her house, failed, and then planned to murder her again.
That's why I'm a bit hesitant to call the murder of Youngja a crime of passion, but technically, the prosecution did label it a crime of passion.
I think another disturbing part of this case is that he kept Heejang's head buried beneath his bed.
No one can know with certainty except him, but I think it suggests something deeper than him just burying her body in different parts of the house.
If the goal was just disposal, he would have kept her head with the rest of her body, but he kept it in the most intimate part of the house, which was below his bed.
This could be a final act of control over her, possessive control.
He couldn't tolerate her criticizing him and leaving him in life, so we made sure she could never leave him in death.
I think also having her head out of the public space of the home may have been that she's only for him.
Maybe having her head hidden away in his room meant he could split himself into this public and private self.
He kept that part of her just for him, but it also raised his paranoia much like the telltale heart.
He kept that part just for him.
This is just my way of seeing it.
But in other criminal cases, killers have done similar things, keeping heads or hearts of their victims as a way to keep that part of the victim to themselves.
In the end, it seemed he really only loved pretty things like these women as a way to control them as he did with his flower garden.
But what I take away from this case is that Jong Juul didn't just kill these women because he was an angry man.
He killed these women because they challenged his control over them because he couldn't handle accountability.
And I think we should take it with a grain of salt.
Everything he says that these women did to him.
