Friend or Foe

2023年7月12日，下午一点二十分整，提顿县的112紧急调度中心接到了一通前所未有的电话。

On 07/12/2023, at exactly 01:20 in the afternoon, the one hundred nineteen emergency dispatch center in Teton received a call unlike any they'd ever received before.

电话那头是一个17岁的女孩，声音在颤抖。

On the line was a 17 year old girl whose voice was trembling.

她完全不知所措。

She was completely unmoored.

电话里的女孩听着调度员问她地址，问她发生了什么紧急情况，但她没有回答。

The girl on the phone listened to the 112 dispatcher ask for her address, ask for the emergency, but she didn't give answers.

相反，她开始问自己的问题。

Instead, she started asking her own questions.

她问，如果我是个高三学生，17岁，还没过生日呢。

She asked, if I'm a high school senior and I'm 17 years old, I haven't had my birthday yet.

如果有人犯了谋杀罪，他们会判五年吗？

If someone commits murder, do they get the five year sentence?

如果我现在自首，能减刑吗？

If I confess now, can I get a reduction?

调度员当时很困惑。

The dispatcher was confused.

他们问，什么？

They asked, what?

这是关于什么事？

What is this regarding?

打电话的人重复道，如果我自首，我可以直接去投案吗？

The caller repeated, if I confess, can I just turn myself in?

他们回答说，来电者，我们无法回答这种假设性的问题。

They responded, Caller, cannot answer questions about hypothetical scenarios like that.

我们需要到现场核实情况才能知道。

We need to verify the situation on-site to know.

你现在在哪里？

Where are you right now?

调度员继续试图追问她的位置，但来电者没有理会这个问题。

The dispatcher continued to try to press her for the location, but the caller ignored the question.

她反而说，那我刚才已经杀了一个人了。

She said instead, then I already killed someone just now.

调度员按照培训所学保持冷静，试图让她别挂电话。

The dispatcher stayed calm like their training had taught them and tried to keep them on the line.

他们问，你杀了一个人。

They asked, you killed a person.

是这样吗？

Is that right?

他们听到女孩急促的吸气声，然后慢慢呼出一口气，接着她用慌张的声音回答。

They heard a sharp breath from the girl and a slow exhale before she responded in a panicked voice.

这只是个恶作剧电话。

It's just a prank call.

2022年，两个高二学生李烈岩和化名朴珍京成了好朋友，周围的人以为她们一见如故，是最好的青春友谊。

When two high school sophomores named Lee Yeolam and pseudonym Park Jin Kyung first became close friends in 2022, people around them assumed that it was instant sisterhood, the best teenage friendship.

她们形影不离。

They were inseparable.

她们在大田的高中同班，几乎每天能待在一起的时间都待在一起。

They were classmates at high school in Daejeon, spending nearly every hour of the day that they could together.

她们不在学校的时候，互相发了数百条短信。

And they exchanged hundreds of text messages between them when they weren't at school.

从外人看来，她们就像亲姐妹一样亲密。

To anyone watching from the outside, they were close sister like friends.

但在这段友谊的背后，关系却一点也不平等。

But inside that friendship, the dynamic was anything but equal.

这不是一段健康的关系。

This was not a healthy relationship.

李烈岩当时17岁。

Joram was 17 years old at the time.

她是个安静的女孩，别人都说她看起来很温顺。

She was a quiet girl who others described as looking very meek.

她身材纤细，身高只有五英尺二英寸，体重不到九十磅。

She was slender and stood at just five foot two and weighed barely ninety pounds.

这个女孩即使和同龄人相比，也显得很娇小。

This is a girl who is small, even compared to peers of her own age.

从小她的热情就一直在于画画。

Since she was a young child, her passion had always been to draw.

她的天赋毋庸置疑，她一生的主要梦想就是通过高考，在大学里学习美术。

She had a talent that was undeniable, and her main dream for her entire life was to just pass her college entrance exams and study fine arts in university.

她想成为一名艺术家。

She wanted to become an artist.

而朴珍京，同样17岁，她给这段友谊带来了截然不同的背景。

Park Jin Kyung, on the other hand, also 17 years old, she brought a very different history to the friendship.

虽然如琳对珍京几乎没有什么抱怨，但珍京却像一颗破坏球一样闯入了她的生活。

While Yeoreum had very few complaints, if any complaints about her, Jin Kyung came into her life like a wrecking ball.

在遇到如琳之前，珍京有过一个不同的好朋友，或者我们可以说是受害者。

Before she ever met Yaram, Jin Kyung had a different best friend or we can say victim.

她和学校里另一个同龄人交朋友，并逐渐开始对这个人产生执念。

She was friends with another peer of theirs at school, who she slowly started to fixate on.

珍京在友谊中不懂得界限，把这位朋友当作情感垃圾桶，而且她完全不给予任何支持。

Jin Kyung hadn't learned boundaries in her friendships and used this friend as an emotional dumping ground, and she reciprocated no support whatsoever.

这完全是单方面的。

It was entirely one-sided.

这样的友谊非常消耗人，会让其中一个朋友变成心理咨询师。

Friendships like these are extremely draining, and it turns one friend into a therapist.

没过多久，这个朋友就对金京的种种行为感到厌倦，开始划清界限。

It didn't take long for this friend to grow tired of Jin Kyung's antics and started drawing those boundaries.

但金京并不想要那种友谊。

But Jin Kyung didn't want that kind of friendship.

她想要的是能被她控制的人。

She wanted someone she could control.

对她和其他有毒的人来说，友谊的基础是对方能给你带来多少好处，而不是真正的友情。

Friendships to her and to other toxic people are based on how useful that person can be to you rather than offering any actual friendship.

一旦对方没用了，他们就会直接抛弃对方，继续往前走，至少在最理想的情况下是这样。

Once the person is no longer useful, they just drop them and move on, at least in the best case scenarios.

据她的同学和前朋友说，金京会不分昼夜地发私信，期待对方立刻回复她那些充满痛苦、抱怨自己动荡家庭生活的消息。

According to her peers and former friends, Jin Kyung would send private messages at all hours of the day and night, expecting immediate responses to her distress filled messages ranting about her very turbulent home life.

她从小到大一直跟朋友们说她父亲对她实施家暴，还说父母对她比对哥哥差远了。

She had told friends throughout her entire life about her father's physical abuse and that her parents treated her terribly compared to her brother.

她永远是第二好的那个。

She was always second best.

从创伤心理学的角度来看，在所谓的家暴和情感忽视下长大，会深刻改变一个孩子与他人建立关系的方式。

From a trauma informed perspective, growing up under the weight of alleged physical abuse and emotional neglect, it profoundly reshapes how a child navigates human relationships with others.

当一个人在家里感到完全无力、没有安全感时，他们往往会拼命想在家庭之外构建一个安全的环境。

When someone feels completely powerless and unsafe within their own home, they often develop an intense panic driven need to construct safety outside of the home.

你们可能不知道，我其实有教育背景，而且很快就要回去教书了。

If you don't know this about me, I have a background in education and I am returning to teaching very soon.

创伤知情护理，了解童年不良经历如何影响孩子的长期健康，以及有毒压力反应如何表现为那些经历过虐待等创伤的孩子的坏行为，所有这些。

Trauma informed care and knowing about how adverse childhood experiences shape a child's long term health and how toxic stress responses manifest as bad behavior in children who have had these traumatic experiences, like child abuse, all of that.

在讨论涉及儿童的案件时，这些都是必不可少的。

It's essential when discussing cases involving children.

据金京自己说，她从小就遭受父亲的虐待。

Jin Kyung had suffered abuse at the hands of her father, according to her, since she was very young.

对珍京来说，这种不安全感表现为一种强迫性的控制欲。

For Jin Kyung, that insecurity manifested as a compulsive drive for total control.

她要求朋友对她绝对忠诚、完全顺从，还要无条件地爱她。

She demanded absolute devotion, compliance, and unconditional affection from her friends.

And this wasn't simply about possessiveness.

这是一种扭曲的、不健康的尝试，想从外界强行获取安全感、认可和爱，而这些正是她在家里得不到的。

It was this warped maladaptive attempt to force security and validation and the love that she was being deprived of at home.

在她看来，如果她能完全掌控另一个人，比如朋友，就能保证对方永远不会像她家人那样让她感到无助。

In her mind, if she could completely dominate someone else, like a friend, she could guarantee that they would never make her feel helpless like her own family did.

珍京一遇到艺琳就抛弃了她最好的朋友，因为她想要一个不会设界限的人。

Jin Kyung dropped her best friend the moment she met Yeorem because she wanted someone that wasn't going to draw those boundaries.

艺琳对她很友善，而且是个很好的倾听者，这正是她所寻找的。

Yeorem showed her kindness and was a really good listener, which is exactly what she looked for.

这段友谊很快就变成了占有欲和强制控制。

The friendship quickly escalated into possessiveness and coercive control.

但从内部来看，这些模式出现时很难察觉。

But from the inside, it's difficult to see when these patterns emerge.

审查此案的心理专家表示，金京从未将她的朋友视为有自主权的人。

Psychological experts who have reviewed this case said that Jin Kang never saw her friendships as people with autonomy.

吕琳只是她达到目的的工具。

Yorem was a means to an end.

她把吕琳看作自己想要拥有的东西。

She viewed Yorem as someone she wanted to own.

她难以管理自己的痛苦，于是把朋友当作情感拐杖来支撑自己。

She was having difficulties managing her own distress and then used her friends as this emotional crutch to keep herself together.

她的朋友感到被困，因为你怎么能告诉别人你不想听他们利用同情心呢？

Her friend felt trapped because how do you tell someone that you don't wanna hear them weaponize their sympathy?

她的朋友们担心她生活中没有其他人，这正是让他们被挟持的原因。

Her friends feared she had no one else in her life, and that is what held them hostage.

当金京将注意力转向吕琳时，这种调节需求升级为强制控制。

When Jin Kyung turned her focus onto Yeorem, that need for regulation escalated into coercive control.

随着时间的推移，金京对妍琳的日常生活设定了严格的规定。

Over time, Jin Kyung placed rigid parameters on Yeorem's daily life.

在她们的短信中，金京制定了明确的行为规则，妍琳被迫像遵守合同一样遵守这些规则。

In their text messages, Jin Kyung created explicit behavior rules that Yeorem was forced to follow like a contract.

而且这些规则是以合同的形式告诉她的。

And they were told to her like they were a contract.

Answer phone calls before the fifth ring.

早上第一件事和睡前都要发报到消息，而且永远不要表现出个人情绪，这她自己都做不到，真是双标。

Send check-in messages first thing in the morning and right before bed, and never act on your personal emotions, which is extremely hypocritical of her.

最让人感到孤立的是，金京禁止妍琳交其他朋友，甚至不允许她和同学在学校随便聊天。

Most isolating of all, Joon Kyung forbade Yeom from making other friends or even having casual conversations with classmates at school.

如果妍琳开会迟到哪怕十分钟，或者对金京的任何要求稍有犹豫，金京的反应就是尖叫、辱骂，有时甚至动手。

If Yeorem was even ten minutes late to a meeting or hesitated to comply with any of Jin Kyung's demands, her response was screaming, verbal abuse, and sometimes physical violence.

对于雅多姆的家人来说，转折点出现在2022年的夏天。

The breaking point for Yaadom's family came during the summer of twenty twenty two.

他们并不完全清楚发生了什么，但能看出女儿在这段友谊中并不开心。

They didn't exactly know the extent of what was happening, but they could tell their daughter was not happy in this friendship.

在打扫耶雷姆的房间时，她的母亲发现了她的日记。

While cleaning Yeorem's room, her mother found her diary.

里面写满了她的恐惧和深深的绝望。

Inside were pages filled with her terror and her profound despair.

耶多姆写到了金京的暴脾气，描述了那有多可怕，还写到了最近一次金京用雨伞打她头的事件。

Yeo dong wrote about Jin Kyung's explosive temper explaining how terrifying it was, and she wrote about a recent incident where Jin Kyung had beaten her over the head with an umbrella.

在一篇令人心碎的日记里，雅多姆写道：我不知道你昨天为什么那么生气，但当你叫我死的时候，如果你是认真的，我真希望我在被打的时候，心就流血死了。

In one heartbreaking entry, Yadam wrote, I don't know why you were so angry yesterday, but when you told me to die, if you meant it, I wish I had just bled from my heart and died when I was getting hit.

耶雷姆的母亲被女儿默默承受的一切吓坏了，她于2022年8月2日直接去了学校。

Horrified by what her daughter had been enduring in silence, Yeorem's mother went directly to the school on 08/02/2022.

她正式举报了校园暴力。

She filed an official report of school violence.

金京被通知有人投诉她，她必须参加一次行为会议。

Jin Kyung was notified that there was a complaint made against her and that she would have to attend a behavior meeting.

她没有立刻对受害者表示悔意，反而表现出攻击性。

Instead of immediately showing remorse to her victim, she instead reacted with aggression.

她拿到了约拉姆母亲的电话号码，给她发了一条很长的、带有对抗性的短信。

She obtained Yoram's mother's phone number and sent her a long confrontational text message.

她写道：你现在想做的事完全没有意义。

She wrote, what you are trying to do right now is completely meaningless.

如果你再继续下去，你就越界了。

If you go any further, you're crossing the line.

你这是在做一个非常愚蠢的决定。

You're making a very foolish move.

如果你继续，我会告你诽谤。

And if you continue, I will report you for defamation.

如果你只是想让约拉姆和我不要再见面，我可以答应你。

If all you want is for Yoram and me to not meet, I'll do that for you.

我其实无所谓。

I don't care either way.

Yoram的妈妈看到这条短信后，意识到她女儿面对的不只是一个霸凌者。

When Yoram's mother read the text message, she realized her daughter wasn't just dealing with a bully.

这个人是有意要伤害Yoram的。

This was someone with malicious intent to hurt Yaram.

于是她坚持把事情闹到学校，不让学校私下解决，最后迫使学区的校园暴力委员会在2022年8月25日召开会议。

She then pushed the matter forward at the school, refusing to allow them to settle this informally, which then forced the district's School Violence Committee to convene on 08/25/2022.

在韩国，校园暴力对策委员会，通常被称为“学暴委”，是设立在教育区内的法定行政机构，负责调查同学间的霸凌、肢体暴力和心理虐待。

In South Korea, school violence countermeasure committees, commonly known as Hakbokki, are statutory administrative bodies established within educational districts that investigate peer bullying, physical assault, and psychological abuse.

当有人正式投诉时，委员会——通常由学校教职工、地方行政人员和家长志愿者组成——会开会评估指控，并决定九种法定纪律处分之一，从一级的简单书面道歉，一直到九级的开除学籍。

When a formal complaint is filed, the committee, which is typically made up of school staff, local administrators, and volunteer parents, they meet to evaluate the allegations and assign one of nine statutory disciplinary measures, ranging from level one, which is just a simple written apology, all the way to level nine, which would be expelled from the school.

尽管初衷是好的，但这些委员会在韩国却广受批评，因为它们在处理案件上出了名的低效。

But despite their intended purpose, these committees are widely criticized across South Korea for being notoriously ineffective at resolving cases.

他们缺乏专业的法律或心理培训，很多时候连教育方面的培训都没有，这意味着他们既是法官又是陪审团，却很容易被霸凌者父母的财富、霸凌者为了减轻处罚而表现出的情感说服力，甚至像真正的执法人员一样，倾向于不相信性侵受害者。

They lack specialized legal or psychological training, oftentimes lacking educational training too, meaning that they are judge and jury that are often greatly swayed by how wealthy the bully's parents are, how emotionally convincing the bully is to talk down their punishment, or well, like even actual law enforcement officers, they're prone to disbelieving victims of sexual assault.

这些委员会成员常常把严重的情感和身体虐待当作青少年之间的小打小闹，只给予低级别的处罚，这些处罚不过是走个形式，既没有恢复性正义，也没有改造的作用。

These panel members often treat severe emotional and physical abuse as minor teenage squabbles, relying on low level punishments that serve as mere formalities that don't offer any restorative justice or rehabilitative purposes.

而在这个案子里，整个程序毫无意义。

And in this case, the proceedings were worthless.

根据官方委员会会议记录，他们并没有调查那些殴打和威胁短信，反而问了一些把虐待描绘成那种充满爱意、互相关心的友谊，只是出了点问题的问题。

According to the official committee meeting records, rather than investigating the physical beatings and threatening messages, committee members asked questions that framed the abuse as this loving, caring, mutual friendship that just went wrong.

有个成员甚至问老师，Yoram是不是因为太孤僻，所以特别依赖Jin Kyung的友谊。

One member went so far as to ask a teacher whether Yeorem depended heavily on Jin Kyung's friendship because she was such a loner.

他们是在暗地里把责任往受害者身上推。

They were subtly trying to shift the blame onto the victim.

因为委员会把这件事当成两个过于亲密的朋友之间的小纠纷，所以他们只给出了最低级别的行政处分，也就是一级书面道歉。

Because the committee treated the situation as this minor personal dispute between two overly close friends, they then issued the lowest administrative penalty available, which is that level one written apology.

Jin Kyung后来确实写了道歉信。

Jin Kyung then did write the apology.

信里全是正式的悔过措辞，就是为了应付程序，毫无疑问她只是照着模板写的。

It was filled with formal expressions of regret designed to satisfy the process, and no doubt she was just following a template.

但正如犯罪专家后来指出的，那一级处罚反而让情况变得更糟。

But as crime experts later pointed out, that level one penalty exacerbated the situation.

这让金京产生了一种自己不会受到任何惩罚的感觉。

It gave Jin Kyung a sense of invulnerability.

在她看来，无论她做什么都不会被举报，因为学校不认为那是错的，而且她完全没受到任何惩罚就脱身了。

In her mind, she couldn't be reported for anything she was doing because the school didn't see it as wrong, and she had walked away completely unpunished.

不过，学校确实同意了家长提出的分班请求，把两个女孩分到了不同的班级，但她们仍然在同一栋楼里，同一所学校。

The school did, however, grant the family's request for classroom separation, moving the two girls into different homerooms, but they remained in the same building at the same school.

她们每天都会在走廊里擦肩而过，而艺琳一直生活在持续的焦虑中，常常一想到要踏进校门就感到害怕。

They passed each other in the hallway every single day, and Yoren lived in constant anxiety, often dreading stepping foot onto school grounds.

学校没有要求她们停止接触，这其实应该是首先要做的事。

There was no mandate to cease contact, which should have been the first thing to happen actually.

但幸运的是，金京不再给艺琳发短信了。

But thankfully, Jin stopped texting Yorem.

七个月里，她都没有再打扰艺琳。

For seven months, she left Yorem alone.

但随着2023年3月新学年开始，金京决定不再等待。

But as the new school year began in March 2023, Jin Kyung decided she was done waiting.

2023年3月10日，一条短信在艺琳的手机上响起。

On 03/10/2023, a text message pinged on Yeorem's phone.

是金京发来的。

It was Jin Kyung.

消息直接又挑衅，就像她一贯的风格。

The message was direct and confrontational like she always was.

你为什么向学校暴力委员会举报我？

Why did you report me to the school violence committee?

艺琳完全措手不及，如实回答了。

Yeon was completely caught off guard and answered honestly.

她解释说，她没有自己去学校行政处，而是她妈妈发现了她的日记，替她提交了举报。

She explained that she hadn't gone to the administration herself, but instead her mother had discovered her diary and filed the report without her involvement.

对金京来说，这个解释像按下了某个开关。

For Jin Kyung, that explanation flipped a switch.

在她看来，既然报警的不是艺琳本人，那就说明艺琳并不恨她，这段友谊还有挽回的余地。

In her mind, the realization that Yeorem had not filed that police report, that meant Yeorem didn't personally hate her, and that the friendship could be salvaged.

金京立刻转变态度，要求她们重新见面，重新做朋友。

Jin Kyung immediately pivoted, demanded they start seeing each other again, and be friends once more.

而可悲的是，已经被金京折磨得精疲力竭的艺琳，又让她回到了自己的生活中。

And tragically, Yeorem, who had been worn down by Jin Kyung, let her back in.

接下来的并不是和解。

What followed was not a reconciliation.

而是金京的进一步升级。

This was Jin Kyung continuing to escalate.

她们友谊的第二阶段比第一阶段更加折磨人。

The second iteration of their friendship was far more punishing than the first one.

金京的要求开始变得越来越危险。

Jin Kyung's demands started getting more and more dangerous.

她让艺琳给她买东西，艺琳买不起的时候，就得去偷。

She was asking Yeorem to buy things for her, and when she couldn't afford it, she had to steal them.

金京想要高端奢侈品，比如祖·玛珑这样的名牌香水、昂贵的餐食和化妆品。

Jin Kyung wanted high end luxury items like brand name perfumes like Jo Malone, expensive meals, and cosmetics.

艺琳的家里给她的零花钱不多，她拿到的那点钱远远不够跟上金京的消费习惯。

Yorem's family did not give her a big allowance, and what she did receive was not nearly enough to keep up with Jin Kyung spending habits.

所以，为了满足施虐者的要求，17岁的艺琳找了份兼职，因为她拒绝去偷。

So to meet her abuser's demands, 17 year old Yeorem found part time work because she refused to steal.

她把高中之外仅有的空闲时间都用来打工，辛苦工作赚来的钱都用来满足金京的要求，只为维持和平。

She spent what little free time she had outside of high school, working grueling hours to use her hard earned wages to meet Jin Kyung's demands just to keep the peace.

除了勒索，还有不断的心理惩罚循环。

Along with the extortion was a constant cycle of psychological punishments as well.

金京经常提起艺琳的妈妈向学校董事会举报她的事，让艺琳感到内疚。

Jin Kyung routinely brought up Yeorem's mother reporting her to the school board to make Yeorem feel guilty.

她指责艺琳和她妈妈因为一点小争吵就彻底毁了她的人生，毁了她的未来。

She accused Yeorem and her mother of completely destroying her life and ruining her future over just a little fight.

她需要所有人都把她看作受害者，同时她继续恐吓着那个正遭受她虐待的女孩。

She needed everyone to see her as this victim while she simultaneously continued to terrorize the girl who was suffering from her abuse.

到2023年6月，雅拉姆已经快要撑不住了。

By June 2023, Yaram was reaching her breaking point.

通过她的兼职工作，她遇到了一个年轻男人。

Through her part time job, she met a young man.

他们开始约会了。

They started dating.

一年多来，雅拉姆第一次感受到了正常、安全、互相回应的友谊是什么样子。

For the first time in over a year, Yaram was able to experience what a normal, safe, reciprocated friendship felt like.

她的男朋友对她很温柔、很有耐心、很尊重，这些都是好朋友应该做到的。

Her boyfriend showed her kindness, patience, respect, everything a good friend should.

她的男朋友看到了她和金京之间那种有毒的循环，对她说，你不需要这样生活。

Her boyfriend looked at the toxic cycle that she had with Jin Kyung and told her, you don't have to live like this.

雅拉姆终于鼓起勇气去面对金京了。

Yeorem was finally able to build the confidence to confront Jin Kyung.

当金京又一次用她最擅长的操控手段，也就是威胁要断绝关系、结束友谊时，这听起来像是解脱，但对被操控的人来说，这只会带来极度的痛苦。

When Jin Kyung once again resorted to her favorite manipulation tactic, which is threatening to cut ties and the friendship, which sounds like an out, but to victims of manipulation, this just creates extreme distress.

以前，Yeorem总觉得自己理亏，非得让Jin Kyung高兴才行。

Previously, Yeorem was convinced that she was in the wrong and she had to make Jin Kyung happy.

但现在，Yeorem没有退缩。

But now Yeorem did not fold.

她也没有道歉。

She didn't apologize.

她拒绝低声下气地乞求。

She refused to beg.

她说，好吧，那就结束这段友谊。

She said, okay, let's end the friendship.

于是她把金京在所有通讯渠道上都拉黑了。

And she blocked Jin Kyung on every communication channel that they had.

被断绝联系后，金京的反应是立刻爆发了毫无保留的怒火。

Jin Kyung's reaction to being cut off was immediate, unmitigated fury.

在金京眼里，Yeoreum并不是在坚持原则、结束这段关系。

To Jin Kyung, Yeoreum was not standing her ground by ending the friendship.

不。

No.

她是在反抗。

To buy herself precious time, she used the phone to text Yoram's older sister pretending to be Yoram and act as though nothing was wrong.

At the same time, she took out her own phone, completely factory reset it to delete any messages she had from Yeorem.
