This was a restaurant where the air was constantly thick with the heavy sweet smell of carbi beef short ribs.

2024年9月18日，秋夕假期的最后一个晚上，一楼餐厅挤满了正在吃团圆饭的家庭。

On 09/18/2024, the final evening of the Chuseok holiday, the 1st Floor dining room was crowded with families finishing their holiday meals.

Just a few feet above the heads of these diners, on the 2nd Floor of the same building, a different kind of fire was being tended to.

晚上8点35分，接到一名女子意外跌倒后昏迷的报警，急救人员赶到了这家餐厅。

At 08:35PM, a 119 emergency crew arrived at the restaurant following the report of a woman losing consciousness after an accidental fall.

他们进入二楼的储物间时，发现35岁的严善熙倒在地上。

When they entered the 2nd Floor storage area, they found 35 year old Yeom Seon-hui lying on the floor.

她的身体裹着一条湿毯子，上面还盖着生肉。

Her body was wrapped in a wet blanket and covered with raw meat.

救护人员掀开毯子后发现，她的胸口和腹部已经被烧成深黑色的坏死组织。

When the paramedics moved the fabric, they found that her chest and abdomen had been burned to this deep necrotic black.

围在她身边的家人——她的姑姑、堂姐妹和哥哥——都在向救护人员解释，说孙怡只是因为太累晕倒了，不小心摔到了烤炉上。

The family members standing over the woman, her aunt, her cousins, and her brother, They're all explaining to the paramedics that Sunny had simply collapsed from exhaustion and had fallen onto one of the barbecue grills.

他们说这不过是场不幸的工伤事故，但医护人员心里总觉得不对劲。

They were saying that this was just a unfortunate workplace accident, but the medics got a really bad feeling.

这事儿太反常了。

This wasn't normal.

The wet rags placed on her burns in combination with the raw meat, it just didn't sit right with them.

So they contacted the police.

To make sure that Sunny and her parents remained compliant with what she was doing, Sookja decided to slowly start mentioning that she felt bad spirits in the home and restaurant.

出了问题。

Something was wrong.

她让Sunny的父母相信，她感受到的是一种邪恶的、充满欲望的灵体，已经附在了女儿身上。

She convinced Sunny's parents that the spirit she felt was an evil, lustful spirit that had taken possession of their daughter.

灵体不一定都有害，但Sookja警告他们，这个灵体非常愤怒，因为Sunny前世曾是她父亲的情人，如今这灵体对母亲怀有杀意。

Spirits are not always dangerous, but Sookja warned them this spirit was angry because from a past life, Sunny had been her own father's lover, and that spirit now harbored a murderous resentment towards the mother.

Sunny's parents were concerned for themselves and their daughter, but Sookja reassured them, don't worry.

She convinces the parents to move to Udong Island to keep the spirit away from them.

接下来的几个月里，Sunny被Sookja残忍对待。

Then for the next several months, Sunny is treated horribly by Sookja.

苏佳突然停下车，调转车头，往餐厅方向开了回去。

Sookja suddenly stopped the car, made a U-turn and started driving back to the restaurant.

她告诉 Sunny 和家人，开车时她突然意识到，如果 Sunny 到了岛上见到母亲，体内的邪灵就会获得足够力量，把她母亲杀了。

She told Sunny and the family that while driving, she had a sudden revelation that if Sunny reached her mother on the island, the evil spirit within Sunny would gain so much power that it would murder her mother.

于是他们一句话没说，直接回到了昌的餐厅。

So they returned to the restaurant in Chan without a further word.

Sunny 被带上了楼，这个可怜的女人，早就精疲力尽，整夜睡不着，靠喝酒才能撑过每一天。

Sunny was brought upstairs, and this poor woman, she's exhausted, sleep deprived, dependent on alcohol to get through the day.

她跟着上了楼，被人命令爬到架子上去。

And she goes upstairs with them and she's told climb on top of the rack.

几个月来，她一直被姨妈的洗脑和宗教操控所控制。

She's been psychologically and religiously manipulated by her aunt's conditioning for months.

加上过度疲惫，她已经没法清醒思考了。

And from her exhaustion, she just can't think straight.

于是她照做了。

So she complies.

赶来的急救人员说，吓人的不只是金西身上的伤和房间里那股恶臭。

The paramedics who arrived said it wasn't just the injuries that Sunny had or the horrific smell in the room that was terrifying.

更让他们毛骨悚然的是，房间里一片死寂。

But they were haunted by the silence of the room.

他们正在做心肺复苏，拼命想救回金西的时候，四周却安静得可怕。

As they were doing life saving efforts, CPR, trying to save Sunny's life.

所以约翰和另外五个大人，就只是站在那儿，眼睁睁看着。

So John, the other five adults in the room just stood around and watched.

法庭注意到，她在整个审判过程中毫无悔意，一直把责任推给金西和医院，说是他们导致了金西的死。

The court made note of her lack of remorse throughout the entire trial and that she continually was blaming Sunny and the hospital for Sunny's death.

她怪金西没有足够努力地对抗邪灵，又说医生没能救活她。

She blamed Sunny for not fighting the evil spirits hard enough and then said that the doctors failed to save her.

她真是个极其可恶的人。

She is truly a despicable human.

正是她对周围人的操控，才让这种群体性的暴行成为可能。

And this manipulation of everyone around her is what made group violence like this possible.

他们不是在慢慢烧死桑尼。

They were not slowly burning Sunny to death.

他们以为自己正团结在一起，帮助桑尼的灵魂得到救赎。

They were a family coming together through a difficult time knowing that Sunny's soul was going to be saved.

因为她太擅长操控他人，周围的人都觉得自己没责任。

And because she was such a good manipulator, the people around her were not responsible.

他们明明亲眼看到真相，却视而不见。

The people around her were not responding to the truth right in front of their eyes.

他们对桑尼求救的呼喊充耳不闻。

They weren't responding to Sunny's screams for help.

当房间里充满她皮肉烧焦的气味，当她昏过去时，他们都没有出手干预。

They didn't intervene when the smell of her burning flesh filled the room or when she passed out.

苏佳的说辞，比他们亲眼所见的还要真实。

Sookja's explanation became more real than what they were actually seeing.

这正是让我觉得这个案子如此可怕的原因。

And that is what made this case so terrifying for me.
