It was nearing midnight on 12/07/2001 when a local taxi pulled up to the curb of the Bukbu bus terminal in Daegu.
The driver settled the bill with the passengers, and the two young girls stepped out into the freezing winter night.
15 year old Kim Gimin and 14 year old Min Kyungmi.
These girls were best friends, inseparable even.
They were both on their way to becoming famous for their fashion sense and modeling skills.
They were widely known in their community.
But on this night, they were miles away from where they were supposed to be.
As Kim Gimin stepped out of the taxi, she took out her phone and powered it off.
Her phone would never log onto a cell network again.
Despite her efforts to go off the grid, it seemed obvious what their next moves would be.
These girls were at a bus terminal.
It's a logical conclusion that they were going to plan to travel somewhere.
But this is where the first anomaly in this case began.
Investigators tracked down all of the bus drivers who operated the buses out of Buk Bu Bus Terminal, and they all said the same thing.
There were no overnight buses running out of the terminal, ever.
The entire building was closed at night.
The gates would have been locked, and even the outdoor lights weren't on.
So why would two teenage girls call a taxi to take them to this bus terminal in the middle of the night?
The local police didn't treat this question with the urgency that it deserved because both girls were over the age of 14.
They were too old to qualify as a missing child and they were now considered voluntary runaways.
The police wouldn't start the missing persons protocol during the most critical time of a missing person's case.
For two weeks, the girl's parents were sickened with worry.
Then Gimin's mother received a phone call from an unlisted number.
When she answered, she heard her daughter weeping and screaming, Mom, please save me.
Save me.
I'm at Busan Station.
But before her mother could get a word out, the phone call was disconnected.

Min Kyungmi was 14 years old at the time of her disappearance.
She was an energetic, highly expressive middle school student who was known as an Ojang.
Gimin was 15.
She also wanted to be in the world of Ojang modeling, and she had the height for it too.
She was a hundred and seventy three centimeters tall, which is five eight at 15 years old.
If it is true that the girls were abducted by traffickers, which we will get into, don't worry.
The oppa that their friends said they were going to meet was not a boyfriend or a friend, but a recruiter connected to a sex trafficking syndicate.
Friday, 12/07/2001, the day before they went missing at 4PM.
A friend of the girls named Sang Hyun met up with Kyungmi and Gimin at a cafe across the street from Seogu Market in Daegu.
Gimin had left her home a little after 3PM that day and had told her parents she was going to hang out with Kyungmi.
When they arrived to hang out, he immediately noticed they seemed very anxious and on edge the entire time.
The girls said that they could only stay for a short while and were constantly checking the time.
By the time the morning came around on December 8, Gimin's parents realized she was not home.
Her mom sent her texts, called her repeatedly, but her phone had already been powered off.
The officers explained to the parents that there is a difference between a missing child and a voluntary runaway.
At the time, the distinction between the two was the age 14.
It wasn't enough to just suspect the child was in danger.
Gimin's mother received a phone call about that fifteen day period after the girls disappeared.
And when she answered, she heard her daughter's voice crying and screaming into the phone.
Mom, please save me.
Save me.
I'm at Busan Station right now.
Kyungmi's say club account would show as active.
There was one new private message sent.
The message was sent to one of her close friends from school.
The message read, I'm scared.
Come find me.
So when we talk about girls like Gimin and Kyungmi, I will never ask why they didn't know better.
They were children.
The better question is why did law enforcement not understand the danger quickly enough to protect them?
It is the responsibility of everyone to take care of the children in our community.
See you next time.
