Speaker 2

I'm very well.

Speaker 2

Thank you, Phil.

Speaker 2

你怎么样?

How are you?

Speaker 1

我挺好的。

I'm good.

Speaker 1

我非常好。

I'm very good.

Speaker 1

今天,我们来聊聊名字这件事。

Today, we're going to talk all about names.

Speaker 1

我们会说说自己的名字,以及它们的来历。

We're gonna talk about our names and where they come from.

Speaker 2

哦,这个话题挺有意思的。

Oh, it's an interesting topic.

Speaker 2

菲尔,你的名字有什么故事吗?

Phil, what's the story behind your name?

Speaker 2

你是不是以某个人或某样东西命名的?

Were you named after anyone or anything?

Speaker 1

说实话,我不知道。

I don't know, if I'm honest.

Speaker 1

我也不清楚为什么叫这个名字。

I don't know why I have my name.

Speaker 2

明白了。

Okay.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

我倒希望我的名字有更特别的来历,但我爸妈有朋友养了一只叫Georgia的狗,他们很喜欢这个名字。

I wish I had a better story for my name, but my parents had friends that had a dog called Georgia, and they liked that name.

Speaker 2

于是他们就给我取名叫Georgia,这可能是第一次有人知道我的真名是Georgia,不是Georgie。

And so they decided to call me Georgia, which might be the first time people are hearing that my name my real name is Georgia, not Georgie.

Speaker 2

啊。

Ah.

Speaker 2

所以,我大概是被以一只狗的名字命名的。

So I guess I was named after a dog.

Speaker 2

你的名字是菲利普,但很多人叫你菲尔,那是昵称。

So your name is Philip, but lots of people call you Phil, which is a nickname.

Speaker 2

昵称是朋友和家人给你起的非正式叫法,通常是对原名的缩写,比如菲尔。

So a nickname is an informal name given to you by friends and family, which is often a shortened version like Phil.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

很多时候,就是把原名缩短了。

Often, it's a shortened name.

Speaker 1

对我来说,这是唯一一个一直被人叫着不改的称呼。

In my case, that's the only one that's ever stuck that people have ever called me.

Speaker 1

不过有时候,朋友也会给你起个搞笑的外号,跟本名一点关系都没有,但就是这么叫你。

But you can also sometimes have, like, a jokey, fun name that might not be anything to do with your real name, but your friends call you that.

Speaker 1

很多人在学校或者家里都有这样的外号。

Lots of people have them at school or in your family.

Speaker 1

乔治,你有外号吗?

Do you have any nicknames, Georgie?

Speaker 2

有。

Yes.

Speaker 2

我爸爸叫我比利,是‘傻比利’的简称,因为我老做些傻事。

I have a nickname that my dad calls me, which is Billy, short for silly Billy, because I do lots of stupid things.

Speaker 1

我感觉你挺喜欢这个外号的?

I'm I'm getting the feeling do you like that nickname?

Speaker 1

或者

Or

Speaker 2

我觉得挺有意思的。

I think it's quite it's quite funny.

Speaker 2

还挺暖心的。

It's quite sweet.

Speaker 2

我也没觉得这有什么大不了的。

I don't mind it that much.

Speaker 2

只要只有我爸爸这么叫我,我就无所谓。

As long as it's only my dad that calls me Billy, it's okay.

Speaker 2

你喜欢自己的名字吗?

Do you like your name?

Speaker 1

我从来没怎么想过这个问题,不过我觉得我还挺喜欢的。

I've never thought about it a lot, so I think I do.

Speaker 1

这名字不算特别少见。

It's it's not an unusual name.

Speaker 1

可能吧,我也说不准。

It might be I don't know.

Speaker 1

有个特别的名字或许挺麻烦的,但我觉得也不算特别普遍。

It might be difficult to have an unusual name, but I don't think it's too common either.

Speaker 1

总不能到处都是这名字吧。

It's not like everyone has it.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

我觉得这个名字再合适不过了。

I think that's perfect for a name.

Speaker 1

我喜欢这个。

I like that.

Speaker 2

所以菲尔,你有没有给过孩子或者宠物起名?难不难?

So Phil, have you ever had to name something like a child or a pet, and was it difficult?

Speaker 1

我得给两个孩子起名。

I had to name two people, two children.

Speaker 1

给我女儿起名的时候,我妻子特别坚持我们选的那个名字,所以对我来说挺容易的。

For my daughter, my wife was very keen on the name that we gave my daughter, so she said that was easy for me.

Speaker 1

这样挺好。

That's that's fine.

Speaker 1

给我儿子起名时,我特别想要一个在英语和西班牙语里都适用、差别不大的名字。

For my son, I really wanted a name that worked in English and in Spanish and wasn't too different.

Speaker 1

其实,能同时在英语和西班牙语里用得顺口的男孩名字没几个,我想来想去也想不出几个。

And there's not actually that many boys names that work easily in both languages or that I could think of.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

因为你妻子是阿根廷人,所以你需要一个两种语言都适用的名字。

Because your wife is from Argentina, so you needed a name that that worked in both.

Speaker 1

好吧,Georgie。

Okay, Georgie.

Speaker 1

你有没有过给宠物或者人取名的经历?

Have you ever had to name something like a pet or someone?

Speaker 2

其实,我父母过几周就要养一只狗,我们现在正在挑名字。

Well, actually, my parents are getting a dog in a in a couple of weeks, and we're thinking about names right now.

Speaker 2

所以你这个问题还挺贴切的。

So it's quite a relevant question.

Speaker 2

确实挺难的,对吧?

It is difficult, isn't it?

Speaker 2

因为你得选一个你会长久喜欢的名字,不会用久了就厌烦,毕竟你每天都要叫它。

Because you have to think of a name that you're going to like for a long time, that you're not gonna get bored of because you use it so much.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

给狗取名的话,最好别选太常见的,不然你一喊狗名,整个公园的狗都跑过来。

I guess with dogs names, you don't want to have something that's too common because when you call your dog, the whole park will come running to Yeah.

Speaker 2

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 2

我们想找个不太普通、有点趣味的名字。

We're trying to think of something a little bit more unusual and fun.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

我们来回顾一下刚才对话里出现的词汇,首先是昵称,指家人和朋友用的非正式叫法。

Let's recap the vocabulary we heard during the conversation, starting with nickname, which is an informal name used by family and friends.

Speaker 2

‘name’ 也可以当动词用,意思是给某人取名字。

We can use name as a verb, which means to give someone a name.

Speaker 2

比如,我爸妈给我取名叫乔治。

For example, my parents named me Georgie.

Speaker 1

如果你的名字是取自某人或某物,那就是因为对方而用了同样的名字。

If you're named after something or someone, you're given the same name as them because of them.

Speaker 1

比如,乔治就是以一只叫佐治亚的狗命名的。

For example, Georgie was named after a dog called Georgia.

Speaker 2

我就是这种情况。

I was.

Speaker 2

你的名字可能是常见的,也就是说很多人跟你同名。

Your name might be common, which means lots of people have the same name.

Speaker 1

或者你的名字比较特别,意思是很少有人跟你同名。

Or your name might be unusual, and that means that not many people have the same name.
