Speaker 0

我是Ria。

This is Ria.

Speaker 0

欢迎收听《小人物的小故事》。

Welcome to Little Stories for Tiny People.

Speaker 0

我16岁的时候,给一个有两个可爱小家伙的家庭当过保姆。

When I was 16 years old, I babysat for a family with two adorable tiny people.

Speaker 0

一个是一岁的可爱小男孩,一到睡觉时间就特别生气;另一个是他四岁的姐姐,长着一头漂亮的卷发,像光环一样。

One was a sweet one year old boy who became very angry at bedtime, and the other was his four year old sister who had a gorgeous halo of curls.

Speaker 0

有一天晚上我当保姆的时候,关了电视,面对一个特别想让我做点有趣事情的四岁小女孩,我当场编了个故事,专门讲给她听。

One night when I was babysitting, I had turned off the TV and faced with a four year old who seemed to desperately want me to do something interesting, I made up a story on the spot just for her.

Speaker 0

我以前从来没这么做过。

I had never done that before.

Speaker 0

故事讲的是一只毛毛虫变成蝴蝶的旅程。

The story was about a caterpillar's journey to become a butterfly.

Speaker 0

故事里其实没发生太多事,而且我得说,情节挺老套的。

Not that much happened in the story, and I have to say it was pretty predictable.

Speaker 0

但那个小女孩非常喜欢。

But the little girl loved it.

Speaker 0

然后我想,好吧。

And I thought, okay.

Speaker 0

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 0

这算是成功了。

That was a success.

Speaker 0

继续吧。

Moving on.

Speaker 0

但事情并没有就此结束。

But there would be no moving on.

Speaker 0

她想一遍又一遍地听那个故事。

She wanted to hear the story again and again.

Speaker 0

从那以后,每次我见到她,她都会让我给她讲蝴蝶的故事。

Every time I saw her after that, she asked me to tell her the butterfly story.

Speaker 0

所以我就这么做了。

So I did.

Speaker 0

我给她讲了很多遍同样的故事。

I told her the same story many times.

Speaker 0

她从来没觉得腻。

It never got old for her.

Speaker 0

多年以后,当我有了做这个播客的想法时,那个小女孩的记忆一下子涌了回来。

Years later, when I had the idea to make this podcast, my memory of that little girl came rushing back.

Speaker 0

这让我确信,是的,孩子们一定会喜欢这个。

And it gave me the assurance that, yes, this is something children will love.

Speaker 0

所以我想用一个新的毛毛虫故事来致敬最初的那个故事。

So I wanted to pay homage to that very first story with a new story about a caterpillar.

Speaker 0

而这个故事,嗯,是我专门为你创作的。

And this story, well, I made it just for you.

Speaker 0

它叫《毛毛虫比布尔和大变化》。

It's called Beeble the Caterpillar and the big change.

Speaker 0

那我们开始吧。

Let's get to it.

Speaker 0

交给你了,大卫。

Take it away, David.

Speaker 1

记住,这里没有图片。

Remember, there are no pictures.

Speaker 1

你得在脑海里想象这些画面。

You have to imagine the pictures in your mind.

Speaker 1

你想怎么想象都行。

Imagine them however you want.

Speaker 1

我们走吧。

Let's go.

Speaker 0

比布尔把脚伸到空中,穿上了鞋子。

Beeble stuck his feet in the air and pulled on his shoes.

Speaker 0

好了,搞定。

There we go.

Speaker 0

一只鞋,两只鞋,三只鞋,四只鞋,五只鞋,六只鞋,七只鞋,八只鞋。

One shoe, two shoe, three shoe, four shoe, five shoe, six shoe, seven shoe, eight shoe.

Speaker 0

十六只。

16.

Speaker 0

好了。

There we go.

Speaker 0

比布尔终于把他所有的小鞋子都穿在了他的小脚上。

Beeble finally had all of his tiny shoes on his tiny little feet.

Speaker 0

他翻过身来,开始沿着石头走路。

He flipped himself over and began walking along a rock.

Speaker 0

比布尔是一只毛毛虫,一只非常快乐的毛毛虫。

Beeble was a caterpillar, a very happy caterpillar.

Speaker 0

他喜欢自己的生活,尤其喜欢自己现在的这个阶段。

He liked his life and especially liked his stage of life.

Speaker 0

他喜欢自己的脚,也喜欢自己在地上爬行的样子,能爬过石头,钻过树枝。

He liked his feet and the way he could creep along the ground over rocks and under sticks.

Speaker 0

他喜欢能爬上树皮找食物的感觉。

He liked being able to climb up tree bark looking for food.

Speaker 0

如果你还记得你那次读的那本书里说的,毛毛虫和其他大多数动物不一样,它们不会简单地长大成更大的自己。

Now if you recall from that book you read on the topic that one time, caterpillars, unlike most other animals, don't simply grow up into bigger versions of themselves.

Speaker 0

当小猫咪、小狮子或者小狼崽出生时,它们只是长得更大。

When a little baby kitten or a little baby lion or a little baby wolf is born, they simply grow bigger.

Speaker 0

小狮子不会突然跑进山洞,然后出来变成,比如说,一只长着胡须的飞龙。

A baby lion does not suddenly go into a cave and emerge as, say, a flying bee whiskered dragon.

Speaker 0

那会非常酷。

That would be very cool.

Speaker 0

但毛毛虫呢?

But caterpillars?

Speaker 0

哦,它们做的事情可神奇了。

Oh, they do a quite amazing thing.

Speaker 0

它们先以原来的样子生活一段时间,每天就是吃、吃、再吃。

They live for a little while as they are, spending their days eating, eating, and also eating.

Speaker 0

然后,时机一到,它们就会给自己建一个小房子,叫做茧,然后在里面待上几个星期。

Then, when the time is right, they build themselves a tiny house called a cocoon, and they stay inside for a few weeks.

Speaker 0

等它们出来的时候,就能飞了,还能给花授粉,因为它们变成了……哎呀。

When they come out, they can fly and pollinate flowers because they've turned into oof.

Speaker 0

比布尔刚才摔了一跤。

Beeble just took a tumble.

Speaker 0

不太好。

No good.

Speaker 0

他没事。

He's alright.

Speaker 0

他一直都这样。

He always is.

Speaker 0

只要他躲着鸟走就行。啾。

As long as he steers clear of birds Tweet.

Speaker 0

啾。

Speaker 0

别靠近黄蜂,也离人远点,好吧。

Doesn't go near any yellow jackets and avoids people Okay.

Speaker 0

回头见,亲爱的。

I'll see you later, hon.

Speaker 0

那他可能就没事了。

Then he might be okay.

Speaker 0

比布尔爬得很慢,而我刚才说的那些东西都跑得飞快。

Beeble moves very slowly, and all of those things I just listed move very fast.

Speaker 0

所以比布尔慢慢爬的时候得非常小心。

So Beeble has to be very careful as he creeps along.

Speaker 0

他有时候会躲在叶子底下,等那些吓人的东西走了再出来。

He sometimes hides under leaves until the scary something goes away.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

比布尔就是一只普普通通的毛毛虫。

Beeble is a regular old caterpillar.

Speaker 0

非常普通。

Positively ordinary.

Speaker 0

但关于比布尔,有一件事你可能会觉得有趣。

But there is one thing about Beeble you might find interesting.

Speaker 0

比布尔对自己的生活做了一个决定。

Beeble has made a decision about his life.

Speaker 0

他决定不建小房子。

He has decided not to make a tiny house.

Speaker 0

他决定几周后不从那个小房子里飞出来。

He has decided not to fly out of that tiny house weeks later.

Speaker 0

他决定永远保持现在的样子。

He has decided to stay just as he is forever.

Speaker 0

一个明亮美丽的早晨,比布尔在岩石上爬行,穿过湿漉漉的叶子。

It was a bright, beautiful morning as Beeble made his way over rocks and under wet leaves.

Speaker 0

前方,比布尔听到了他的朋友杰拉德朝他走来的 unmistakable 声音。

Ahead of him, Beeble heard the unmistakable sound of his friend Gerard ambling towards him.

Speaker 0

杰勒德走路时,靴子会发出一种很特别的拖沓声,因为他喜欢穿靴子。

Gerard's feet made a very specific shuffling sound as he went because he liked to wear boots.

Speaker 0

穿着16只靴子走路很难,但杰勒德更喜欢靴子,因为穿凉鞋会让他绊倒。

It's difficult to walk wearing 16 boots, but Gerard preferred boots because sandals made him trip.

Speaker 0

你好,杰勒德。

Hello, Gerard.

Speaker 2

哦,你好,比布尔。

Oh, hello, Beeble.

Speaker 2

很高兴遇到你。

I'm glad I ran into you.

Speaker 0

比布尔好奇地抬起头。

Beeble looked up with interest.

Speaker 0

除非有什么不寻常的事,否则没人会说很高兴遇到你。

No one said they were glad to run into you unless something unusual was going on.

Speaker 0

问题是,我听说

The thing is, I heard from

Speaker 2

一个朋友听另一个朋友说,又从珀西瓦尔那里听说,你决定不进行那个大改变了。

a friend who heard from a friend who heard from Percival that you well, that you've decided not to go through with the big change.

Speaker 0

比布尔叹了口气。

Beeble sighed.

Speaker 0

最近这种事经常发生。

This had been happening a lot lately.

Speaker 0

他只跟杰米提过,结果她好像告诉了所有人。

He'd only mentioned it to Jamie, and it seemed she'd told everyone.

Speaker 0

问题是,杰拉德又说了一遍。

The thing is, Gerard said again.

Speaker 0

这是杰拉德最喜欢说的一句话,他尽量多用它。

This was a favorite phrase of Gerard's, and he made sure to use it as much as possible.

Speaker 2

问题是,我们都很担心你。

The thing is we're all very concerned about you.

Speaker 2

你知道,那个大改变不是可选的。

The big change is not optional, you know?

Speaker 0

嗯哼。

Uh-huh.

Speaker 0

比布尔,这只是生活的一部分。

It's just a part of life, Beeble.

Speaker 0

你逃不掉的。

You can't escape it.

Speaker 0

“我会考虑的,”比布尔说着,转身走开,心里根本没打算去想。

I'll think about that, Beeble said and began walking away with no intention to think about it.

Speaker 2

比布尔,我只是想帮你。

Beeble, I'm just trying to help you.

Speaker 0

谢谢你,杰拉德。

Thank you, Gerard.

Speaker 0

问题是,我得走了,杰拉德。

The thing is I have to go, Gerard.

Speaker 0

我还有好多东西要吃呢。

I have a lot of eating to do.

Speaker 0

比布尔消失在森林的树叶中。

Beeble disappeared into the leaves of the forest.

Speaker 0

杰拉德就是不明白,比布尔自己嘟囔着。

Gerard just doesn't get it, Beeble grumbled to himself.

Speaker 0

然后他被一片看起来非常美味的叶子吸引了。

Then he was distracted by a very delicious looking leaf.

Speaker 0

第二天,比布尔又出去找吃的了。

The following day, Beeble was out looking for food again.

Speaker 0

这些天他吃得很多。

He was eating a lot these days.

Speaker 0

突然,比布尔的邻居华金出现在他旁边。

Out of nowhere, Beeble's neighbor, Joaquin, appeared next to him.

Speaker 0

和杰拉德不同,华金走路非常非常轻。

Unlike Gerard, Joaquin walked very, very quietly.

Speaker 0

华金,你吓到我了。

Joaquin, you scared me.

Speaker 0

哦,抱歉,比布尔。

Oh, sorry, Beeble.

Speaker 0

没关系。

It's okay.

Speaker 0

我想跟你聊点事。

So I wanted to talk to you about something?

Speaker 0

什么事?

Yes?

Speaker 0

我听说你不想经历那个大变化。

I heard you don't wanna go through the big change.

Speaker 0

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 0

那你打算怎么躲过去呢?

Well, how are you gonna avoid it?

Speaker 0

我就是不做茧呗。

I just won't make a cocoon.

Speaker 0

比布尔。

Beeble.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

你必须得做个茧。

You've gotta make a cocoon.

Speaker 0

我不明白为什么。

I don't see why.

Speaker 0

很抱歉,我得先走了。

And I'm sorry, but I must excuse myself.

Speaker 0

我得赶路了。

I need to be on my way.

Speaker 0

你要去哪儿?

Where are you going?

Speaker 0

去吃饭。

To eat.

Speaker 0

说完,比布尔就消失在森林里了。

And with that, Beeble disappeared into the forest.

Speaker 0

他发现了一株从没见过的漂亮植物,开心地吃了起来。

He found a glorious plant he'd never seen before and began happily snacking away at it.

Speaker 0

第二天,比布尔又出去吃东西了。

The next day, Beeble was out eating yet again.

Speaker 0

这次,他的朋友谢拉来看他了。

This time, his friend Shayla came by to see him.

Speaker 0

嘿,伙计。

Hey, buddy.

Speaker 0

哦,嘿,谢拉。

Oh, hey, Shayla.

Speaker 0

所以,关于不经历大变化这件事,是怎么回事?

So what's this about not going through the big change?

Speaker 0

比布尔停了下来。

Beeble stopped.

Speaker 0

他累了。

He was tired.

Speaker 0

他看着他的朋友。

He looked at his friend.

Speaker 0

我不想再谈这个了。

I'm tired of talking about this.

Speaker 0

每个靠近我的毛毛虫都试图说服我,我必须经历那个大变化。

Every caterpillar who gets near me tries to convince me I have to go through the big change.

Speaker 0

希拉只是点了点头,等着他。

Sheila just nodded and waited.

Speaker 0

我喜欢当毛毛虫。

I like being a caterpillar.

Speaker 0

我不想长大变成别的东西。

I don't want to grow up to be something else.

Speaker 0

我喜欢现在的自己。

I like the way I am.

Speaker 0

比布斯,你才活了大概两周而已。

Beebs, you've only been alive for, like, two weeks.

Speaker 0

这两周过得很棒。

It's been a great two weeks.

Speaker 0

你怕什么呢?

What are you scared of?

Speaker 0

比布尔环顾四周,抬头看着树上摇曳的叶子。

Beeble looked around, up at the trees, their leaves swaying.

Speaker 0

鸟儿从头顶飞过。

Birds flew overhead.

Speaker 0

比布尔和谢拉躲到一片叶子下面藏起来。

Beeble and Shayla ducked under a leaf to hide.

Speaker 0

我不怕。

I'm not scared.

Speaker 0

这不是怕不怕的问题。

It's not about being scared.

Speaker 0

好吧,我害怕。

Well, I am.

Speaker 0

我怕飞。

I'm afraid of flying.

Speaker 0

你怕?

You are?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

我以前从来没离开过地面。

I've never been off the ground before.

Speaker 0

你看起来不像害怕的样子。

You don't look scared.

Speaker 0

一个人害不害怕,看表情就能看出来。

You can always tell if someone's scared by how they look.

Speaker 0

比布尔点了点头。

Beeble nodded.

Speaker 0

这倒是真的。

That was true.

Speaker 0

好吧,我并不害怕飞行。

Well, I'm not afraid to fly.

Speaker 0

不是。

No.

Speaker 0

只是我很喜欢现在的生活。

It's just I like how my life is right now.

Speaker 0

我喜欢有这么多脚和鞋子,也喜欢在岩石上爬来爬去。

I like having all these feet and shoes, and I like creeping over rocks.

Speaker 0

大家都觉得我奇怪,但我不明白为什么其他毛毛虫都完全接受这一切。

Everyone thinks I'm the odd one, but I don't understand why every other caterpillar is just totally okay with all of this.

Speaker 0

如果我不想经历那个大变化,我看不出有什么必要去经历。

I don't see the point of going through the big change if I don't wanna do it.

Speaker 0

我的意思是,这一切到底有什么意义?

I mean, what is the meaning of all this?

Speaker 0

他们俩都安静下来,因为一只猛禽的黑色身影从他们头顶滑过,落在高处的一根树枝上。

They were both quiet as the dark shape of a raptor sailed above them and settled in a branch high above the ground.

Speaker 0

阳光透过树叶闪烁,一阵轻柔的风吹过森林。

The sun winked through the leaves and a gentle wind drifted through the forest.

Speaker 0

比布尔,这个问题挺大的,我觉得没有一个简单的答案。

Beeble, that's kind of a big question, and I don't think there's just one answer to it.

Speaker 0

这种事情你得自己去摸索。

It's the kind of thing you have to figure out on your own.

Speaker 0

再说了,我不确定其他人都像你想的那样接受这一切。

Besides, I'm not sure everyone else is as okay with it all as you think.

Speaker 0

我昨天顺便去看了杰拉德。

I stopped by to see Gerard yesterday.

Speaker 0

他说他能感觉到自己的大变化要来了,正在收拾他的靴子,准备捐给毛毛虫靴子共享计划。

He said he could tell his big change was coming and he was packing up all his boots to donate to the caterpillar boot share program.

Speaker 0

你知道他对我说了什么吗?

You know what he said to me?

Speaker 0

什么?

What?

Speaker 0

他说,问题是,我真的会想念我的靴子。

He said, the thing is, I'm really going to miss my boots.

Speaker 0

比布尔笑了。

Beeble smiled.

Speaker 0

我能想象他说那句话的样子。

I can picture him saying that.

Speaker 0

我们不能永远当毛毛虫。

We can't be caterpillars forever.

Speaker 0

我们必须长大,变成美丽的……就在这时,他们听到了一声巨响。

We have to grow up into beautiful Just then, they heard a loud sound.

Speaker 0

不。

No.

Speaker 0

不。

No.

Speaker 0

不。

No.

Speaker 0

不。

No.

Speaker 0

不是那样的。

Not like that.

Speaker 0

是这样的。

Like this.

Speaker 0

比布尔和谢拉道了别。

Beeble and Shayla said their goodbyes.

Speaker 0

谢拉喊道:“想想我说的话。”

Think about what I said, Shayla called.

Speaker 0

比布尔一路嚼着叶子回家。

Beeble headed home, munching on leaves the whole way.

Speaker 0

第二天,比布尔慢悠悠地走进森林,又去吃更多的植物了。

The next day, Beeble ambled into the forest, off to eat more plants.

Speaker 0

他吃的可不是随便什么植物。

He didn't eat just any plants.

Speaker 0

他有一些特别喜欢的。

He had some favorites.

Speaker 0

他去了其中一种那里。

He went to one of those.

Speaker 0

那是一种矮壮结实的绿色植物,叶子美味得超乎想象。

It was a stout, hearty green plant with the most delicious leaves you can imagine.

Speaker 0

它长在一棵高大如雕像般的植物阴影下,那棵植物开着美丽的淡紫色花朵,各种飞行访客落在花瓣上,热闹非凡。

It grew in the shade of a tall statuesque plant with beautiful lavender flowers that buzzed with life as flying visitors of all kinds touched down in their petals.

Speaker 0

比布尔抬头瞥了一眼上方那片繁忙的景象,同时咬了一口面前的叶子。

Beeble glanced up at the frenzy of activity above as he bit into the leaf in front of him.

Speaker 0

直到触角碰到另一只毛毛虫,他才发现对方也在啃同一片叶子。

He didn't notice that another caterpillar was also chewing on the same leaf until they bumped antennae.

Speaker 0

不好意思。

Excuse me.

Speaker 0

对不起。

I'm sorry.

Speaker 0

我想我是分心了,因为我看到我表姐在上面。

I guess I was distracted because I saw my cousin up there.

Speaker 0

嘿,玛莲娜,另一只毛毛虫喊道,一只优雅的黑色蝴蝶挥了挥翅膀,然后从上面那棵开花的植物上飞走了。

Hey, Marlena, the other caterpillar called, and an elegant black butterfly waved before flying away from the flowering plant above.

Speaker 0

你表姐?

Your cousin?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

她刚刚经历了那个大变化。

She just went through the big change.

Speaker 0

太不可思议了,对吧?

It's incredible, isn't it?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

下一个就是我了。

I'm next.

Speaker 0

很快,我就要飞到上面那片叶子上去了。

Soon, I'll be landing in a leaf up there.

Speaker 0

你也是,看你这体型,也快了。

You too, judging by your, your size.

Speaker 0

如果毛毛虫会脸红的话,比布尔早就脸红了,但它们不会。

If caterpillars could blush, Beeble would have blushed, but they can't.

Speaker 0

所以他只是点了点头,接受了这份慷慨的赞美。

So he accepted this generous compliment with a nod.

Speaker 0

但与此同时,听到“大变化”这个词,他感到自己紧张起来,因为他可不想经历那个。

But at the same time, he felt himself tense at the mention of the big change, which he had no intention of experiencing.

Speaker 0

我们家的每个成员在经历大变化之后,都会特意去拜访上面那株植物。

Everyone in my family makes sure to visit that plant up there after they go through the big change.

Speaker 0

真的吗?

Really?

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

家族传说里说,我们家族每一只蝴蝶,往上数好几代,都落在那棵植物上,让它活着,还结出果实。

Family legend has it that every butterfly in our family, going back generations, has landed on that plant, keeping it alive and making fruit.

Speaker 0

只是去拜访一下就能让它活着。

Keeping it alive just by visiting it.

Speaker 0

是不是很了不起?

Isn't that remarkable?

Speaker 0

了不起?

Remarkable?

Speaker 0

比布尔听说过这件事,飞行的访客只要落在植物上就能帮它生长。

Beeble had heard about this, that flying visitors could help plants grow just by landing on them.

Speaker 0

但不知怎么的,从这只新来的毛毛虫嘴里说出来,听起来就神奇多了。

But somehow, it sounded so much more magical when this new caterpillar said it.

Speaker 0

确实听起来很了不起。

It did sound remarkable.

Speaker 0

哎呀。

Oops.

Speaker 0

我迟到了,毛毛虫说着,瞥了一眼她的手表。

I'm late, the caterpillar said, glancing at her wristwatch.

Speaker 0

我得去面试一个新的宠物保姆。

I have to interview a new pet sitter.

Speaker 0

在我经历大变化的时候,不能让我家小跳蚤孤零零的。

Can't leave my little flea all by his lonesome while I'm going through the big change.

Speaker 0

很高兴认识你。

Nice meeting you.

Speaker 0

说完,她就拖着步子走了,凉鞋啪嗒啪嗒地响着。

And with that, she shuffled away, her sandals flapping in chorus as she went.

Speaker 0

比布尔挥了挥手,然后继续吃东西,想着毛毛虫说的话。

Beeble waved, then went back to eating and thinking about what the caterpillar had said.

Speaker 0

他嚼着一片叶子,感觉它在嘴里打转,抬头看着那棵开花的植物。

As he munched on a leaf, feeling it roll around in his mouth, he looked up at the flowering plant.

Speaker 0

比布的目光顺着植物的枝条望去。

Beeble's gaze followed the arc of the plant's branches.

Speaker 0

他看到阳光透过花瓣洒落下来。

He saw the sun filtering through the petals of the flowers.

Speaker 0

一只蝴蝶悄无声息地飞下来,落在上面。

A butterfly swooped down and landed, silently.

Speaker 0

蝴蝶飞走时,比布正嚼着从植物上摘下的叶子,他感到一丝领悟像针尖一样刺入脑海,然后迅速扩散,充满了整个心灵。

As the butterfly flew up and away, and as Beeble chewed the leaf from the plant, he felt as though a pinprick of understanding expanded until it filled every corner of his mind.

Speaker 0

他是一只靠吃叶子长大的毛毛虫。

He was a caterpillar growing fat on leaves.

Speaker 0

他嘴里的叶子,是在上方那棵开花植物的荫蔽下生长的。

The leaf in his mouth grew in the shade of the flowering plant above.

Speaker 0

而那棵开花植物,因为那些会飞的访客而茁壮成长。

The flowering plant thrived because of flying visitors.

Speaker 0

那些会飞的访客,都经历过那场大蜕变。

Flying visitors who'd gone through the big change.

Speaker 0

后来,它们可能会在附近产卵,孵化出更多的毛毛虫。

Later, they might lay eggs nearby to make more caterpillars.

Speaker 0

毛毛虫、叶子、花朵、飞行的访客、卵、毛毛虫。

Caterpillar, leaf, flowers, flying visitor, egg, caterpillar.

Speaker 0

这一切连成了一个巨大的循环。

It all came together in a great circle.

Speaker 0

就像拼图拼上最后一块,终于看到完整画面一样,这幅画面太大了,远远超出了比布尔本身。

It was like when you click that last piece into a puzzle and you finally see the whole picture, this picture was so big, so much bigger than Beeble.

Speaker 0

突然间,他感到自己无比渺小,但这种渺小却让人安心。

And suddenly, he felt terribly small in the best way possible.

Speaker 0

最重要的是,他意识到这一切都有意义。

And most importantly, he realized there's a point to all of this.

Speaker 0

比布尔低头看了看自己。

Beeble looked down at himself.

Speaker 0

他其实很庞大。

He was enormous.

Speaker 0

短短几周,他就长大了三倍。

In just a few weeks, he'd tripled in size.

Speaker 0

这些植物给了他一切。

These plants had given him everything he had.

Speaker 0

它们给了他生命。

They'd given him life.

Speaker 0

比布尔知道自己该做什么了。

Beeble knew what he had to do.

Speaker 0

他用十六条小脚慢悠悠地走开,鞋带拖在地上。

He ambled away on his 16 little feet, his shoelaces scraping the ground as he went.

Speaker 0

比布尔回到了他平时睡觉的那片叶子。

Beeble returned to the leaf where he usually slept.

Speaker 0

他给隔壁叶子上织网的蜘蛛本森留了点水。

He left out some water for Benson, the spider who liked to make its webs in the leaf next door.

Speaker 0

他收拾好自己的东西,尽管不知道还会不会回来。

He tidied his things even though he didn't know if he'd ever be back.

Speaker 0

不知怎么的,比布尔就是知道该往哪儿走。

Somehow, Beeble knew exactly where to go.

就好像他体内装了个导航仪,指引他找到一棵小树上的一根特定的树枝。

It was like he had a homing device inside of him, directing him toward a precise branch on a small tree.

他内心有股力量在引导他,也许就是那股让他吃光所有叶子的力量,他知道自己该怎么做。

Guided by a force within him, perhaps the same one that had nudged him to eat all those leaves, he knew what to do.

Speaker 0

他建了一个茧。

He built a cocoon.

Speaker 0

一个安全地藏在偏僻叶子背面的茧。

One safely hidden on the underside of an out of the way leaf.

Speaker 0

比布尔在茧里待了将近三个星期。

Beeble stayed inside his cocoon for almost three weeks.

Speaker 0

比布尔听过关于大变身的传说。

Beeble had heard stories about the big change.

Speaker 0

他见过很多毛毛虫蜕变前后的样子,但他怎么也想不到,真正的过程会那么激烈、那么疯狂。

He'd seen plenty of caterpillars before and after, but he never could have imagined how intense and crazy it truly was.

Speaker 0

然后有一天晚上,比布尔从茧里钻了出来。

Then one evening, Beeble broke out of his cocoon.

Speaker 0

出来的时候有点费劲。

Getting out was awkward.

Speaker 0

他得适应新长出来的翅膀。

He had new appendages to count for.

Speaker 0

但一旦出来,他就冲向天空,好像飞了一辈子似的。

But once he emerged, he launched himself skyward as if he'd been flying his whole life.

Speaker 0

他朝着满月飞去。

He sailed upwards toward the full moon.

Speaker 0

仅仅通过活着、成长,以及以最惊人的方式蜕变,比布尔真的觉得自己是那伟大无尽循环的一部分。

Just by living and growing and changing changing in the most shocking way, truly Beeble felt like he was part of a great unending circle.

Speaker 0

比布尔不再是毛毛虫了。

Beeble was no longer a caterpillar.

Speaker 0

他变成了一只又大又漂亮的飞蛾。

He had changed into a big, beautiful moth.

Speaker 0

比布尔在空中飞来飞去,去帮助那些曾经养育过他的植物。

Beeble flitted through the air, off to help the plants that had fed him so very well.

Speaker 0

我最后是不是把你们给骗到了?

Did I get you at the end there?

Speaker 0

我敢肯定大家都猜到故事会怎么发展,所以我忍不住加了个反转。

Pretty sure everyone knew where this story was going, so I couldn't resist throwing in a twist.

Speaker 0

为了准备这个故事,我了解到大多数毛毛虫最后会变成蛾子,而不是蝴蝶。

In researching for this story, I learned that most caterpillars turn into moths, not butterflies.

Speaker 0

蝴蝶确实很美,这点毋庸置疑。

Butterflies are beautiful, no doubt.

Speaker 0

但说到让我们的植物世界保持生机勃勃,蛾子其实更重要。

But moths are even more important when it comes to keeping our plant world vibrant and thriving.

Speaker 0

它们是夜班工作者,我们欠它们很多。

They are the night shift workers to whom we owe quite a lot.
