So my guest today was supposed to be a turtle who lives in the woods near my house.

他叫卡特，我见过他几次，但他不是那种特别外向的乌龟。

His name is Carter, and I've met him a few times, but he's not the most outgoing turtle.

我们的关系已经发展到他不再一看到我就缩进壳里，但还在慢慢进步中。

We've reached a point in our relationship where he no longer dives inside his shell as soon as he sees me, but it's a work in progress.

前几天，在我好说歹说之下，卡特同意来参加这个故事。

The other day, after much persuasion on my part, Carter agreed to sit in for the story.

但就在最后一刻，一只叫马可的蓝松鸦出现在我窗前，嘴里叼着一片叶子，上面潦草地写着一条消息。

But at the last minute, a blue jay named Marco showed up at my window holding a leaf with a message scrawled across it.

上面写着：亲爱的瑞亚，对不起。

It said, dear Ria, sorry.

我今天情绪波动很大。

I'm having a big feelings kind of a day.

我需要待在壳里。

I need to stay in my shell.

抱歉，卡特。

Apologies, Carter.

PS, here are some worms for you to enjoy as an afternoon snack.

And at that moment, Marco pulled out some worms.

哎呀。

Ugh.

真恶心。

Gross.

我得把这些退回去。

I'm gonna be sending those back.

我对此有点纠结，小不点们。

I'm of two minds about this, tiny people.

一方面，我完全理解那种感受。

On the one hand, I've totally been there.

I definitely have.

But I also think it's important to try to work through those feelings.

艾娃拿走了月亮。

Ava takes the moon.

Here we go.

艾娃喜欢把纸和纸板箱剪成玩偶、立体模型和棕色的纸狐狸。

Ava loved to cut paper and cardboard boxes into dolls, dioramas, and brown paper foxes.

她喜欢把剪下来的图案贴在大海报板上。

She loved to paste cutouts onto big poster boards.

秋天的时候，她会在小葫芦的两侧贴上活动眼睛。

In fall, she pasted googly eyes on the sides of small gourds.

她把旧报纸剪成碎条。

She cut old newspapers into shreds.

她把每个人床垫上的标签都剪掉了。

She cut the tags off the mattresses of everyone's beds.

妈妈反对时，艾娃说：“这能让我平静下来。”

It calms me, Ava said when her mother objected.

艾娃补充说：“当我感到不被尊重时，我就会剪纸。”

I cut paper, Ava added, when I feel disrespected.

没人能否认艾娃有天赋，有才华，有一种罕见的能力，能快速彻底地翻遍杂志、传单和回收物，找到她可能需要的完美图片。

No one could deny Ava had talent, a gift, a rare ability to thoroughly sift through magazines, flyers, and recycling with speed to find just the right pictures she could possibly need.

所以当妈妈反对时，艾娃只是指着她最新的作品。

So when her mother would object, Ava would simply point to her latest project.

“我是艺术家，”艾娃宣布，纸屑一路拖到门外。

I'm an artiste, Ava announced as paper trailed out the door.

而且，即使地上堆满了纸，艾娃还是，还是想剪更多。

And still, even with paper piling up on the floor, Ava still, still needed to snip more.

艾娃压力大的时候，事情就变得疯狂了。

Things got crazy when Ava was stressed.

她会一直剪，直到所有的纸娃娃都穿上精致的服装，戴上帽子，系上腰带，直到艾娃的手指磨出了小水泡。

She would snip till all her paper dolls were dressed in elaborate costumes, in hats, and in belts until Ava's fingers developed small welts.

够了，她妈妈有一天说，迅速拿走了剪刀。

Enough, her mom said one day, swiftly taking the scissors away.

别剪了，至少今天别剪了。

Enough of that snipping, at least for today.

艾娃撅起嘴，嘟囔着说，好吧。

Ava stuck out her lip and mumbled, okay.

不知怎么的，艾娃从周一到周四都没用剪刀，就这样熬过了压力。

Somehow, Ava got from Monday to Thursday without her scissors to keep stress at bay.

但到了周五，好像所有事情都不对劲，那天感觉特别特别漫长。

But on Friday, everything seemed to go wrong, and the day felt very, very long.

她最好的朋友因为生病不得不回家。

Her best friend had to go home sick.

课间休息时，艾娃看了看自己的腿，发现了一只蜱虫。

At recess, Ava looked at her leg and saw a tick.

蜱虫被移除后，艾娃的衬衫上沾上了颜料。

After the tick was removed, Ava got paint on her shirt.

所以那天剩下的时间里，她一直高度警惕。

So the rest of the day, she was on high alert.

一天之内还能出什么别的差错呢？

For what else could go wrong in the span of a day?

她回到家时筋疲力尽，累得连玩都玩不动了。

And she arrived home exhausted, too spent to play.

那天晚上，艾娃梦见剪彩纸屑，把它们高高抛起。

That night, Ava dreamed of cutting confetti, tossing it high.

她突然醒来，瞥见了天上的月亮。

She suddenly woke, glimpsing the moon in the sky.

月亮圆圆的，在夜色中闪闪发光。

The moon was full, shimmering, glowing in the dark.

看到它，艾娃心里深处仿佛被点亮了什么。

And seeing it there seemed to light a spark somewhere deep in Ava's heart.

她去找剪刀，准备开始她的创作。

She searched for her scissors to commence with her art.

拿着剪刀，艾娃来到院子里。

Scissors in hand, Ava went in the yard.

就一小会儿。

This'll just take a minute.

她心想，这应该不难，于是从棚子里拿出梯子，还确认了一下父母已经睡了。

Won't be too hard, she thought as she pulled the ladder out of the shed and listened to make sure her parents were in bed.

艾娃站在高高的梯子上，咔嚓一下。

Ava stood on the ladder ever so high, and she snipped.

她把月亮从天上剪了下来。

She snipped that moon out of the sky.

她把月亮拉了下来，拖进了屋里。

She pulled the moon down and dragged it inside.

“我自己的月亮，”她心里想着，把月亮挂在了旧木架子上方。

My very own moon, she thought to herself as she hung the moon above an old wooden shelf.

这是艾娃迄今为止最大的项目。

This was Ava's biggest project by far.

比她那个巨大的纸板车还大，比她用纸浆做的堡垒还大，也比她为戏剧做的布景还大。

Bigger than her huge cardboard car, bigger than the fort she'd made of paper mache, bigger than the set she'd made for her play.

艾娃看着月亮，渐渐入睡，感觉烦恼都消散了。

Ava fell asleep, staring at the moon, feeling her worries fall away.

但没过多久，别人就发现月亮不见了。

But it didn't take long for others to see the moon was gone.

在黎明前的深夜里，狗、猫头鹰、夜间的生物，还有上夜班的人，都没有了光亮。

Out in the deep dark well before dawn, Dogs, owls, creatures in the night, people working the night shift now without light.

艾娃很快被那些悲伤的声音吵醒，他们看到月亮原来在的地方现在是一片黑暗的空洞。

Ava soon woke to the sounds of those sad to see a dark blank spot where the moon used to be.
