It's just the story framed by soft music.

Speaker 0

Now, grab your weighted blanket, snuggle up, and fall asleep to this sweet tale.

Speaker 1

"Will Granny Rabbit be all right?"

Speaker 1

It was Cynthia who said this.

Speaker 1

She was the second youngest bunny, with brown and cream-colored ears that flopped over her shoulders.

Speaker 1

"Yes.

Speaker 1

It's just a sprain," Mother said as she packed her suitcase.

Speaker 1

It was the blue one, her smallest overnight bag, which reassured the bunnies as they watched her pack.

Speaker 1

"But her ankle's sore, and she needs some help getting around.

Speaker 1

I'll be away today and tomorrow."

Speaker 1

Mother Rabbit went down the line, kissing her little bunnies.

Speaker 1

When she reached Forest, he dodged her.

Speaker 1

"When will Papa be home?"

Speaker 1

he asked with searching eyes.

Speaker 1

"He should be back this evening after he's finished gathering cabbage for your dinner.

Speaker 1

Now come here."

Speaker 1

Forest allowed himself to be kissed.

Speaker 1

"Ooh, cabbage.

Speaker 1

That's my favorite," said Quinn, wiggling her nose with excitement.

Speaker 1

Once Mother Rabbit kissed the 14th bunny, she collected her suitcase and paused at the door of the warren.

Speaker 1

"No going out in the bright sun."

Speaker 2

"Yes, Mother."

Speaker 1

"Don't leave any bunny behind when you do go out."

Speaker 2

"Yes, Mother."

Speaker 1

"Oh, and hang on.

Speaker 1

What day is it?"

Speaker 1

"It's Tuesday, Mama."

Speaker 1

"Tuesday.

Speaker 1

Tuesday?

Speaker 1

Is it really?"

Speaker 2

"Yes."

Speaker 1

Every bunny knew what Tuesday was.

Speaker 1

"Eleanor, Elliot, you're in charge of wash day."

Speaker 1

"Yes, Mother."

Speaker 1

"Got it, Mom."

Speaker 1

"Make sure it goes smoothly.

Speaker 1

The rest of you, listen to your brother and sister."

Speaker 1

Most of the bunnies nodded.

Speaker 1

A few sighed.

Speaker 1

Forest crossed his paws over his chest.

Speaker 1

Mother Rabbit gave them all a once-over.

Speaker 1

"I want reports of excellent behavior."

Speaker 1

She turned to go, then turned back and grinned.

Speaker 1

"I can't leave without a group hug."

Speaker 1

The bunnies, every last one, gathered around her.

Speaker 1

"Oh, my little bunnies, I will miss you so."

Speaker 1

"You can't go, Mommy.

Speaker 1

We're not letting you."

Speaker 1

"That's right.

Speaker 1

We're keeping you prisoner."

Speaker 1

"Granny needs me, and you do love your granny."

Speaker 1

"Oh, all right.

Speaker 1

Let her go."

Speaker 1

"See you soon.

Speaker 1

Be good, my darlings.

Speaker 1

I love you."

Speaker 2

"Goodbye, Mama.

Speaker 2

Travel safe."

Speaker 1

As soon as the warren door clicked shut behind her, Eleanor and Elliot stepped forward.

Speaker 1

They were twins, born a single minute apart.

Speaker 1

They tended to finish each other's sentences.

Speaker 1

They were the eldest of the 14 bunnies, a fact that was well-impressed upon the others since their births.

Speaker 1

It had meant they were the first to do most everything.

Speaker 1

First to cross a slender log over the rushing river.

Speaker 1

First to take turns on the ancient bicycle passed down to the family from cousins in the next forest.

Speaker 1

It also meant they had more responsibilities, like being in charge on wash day.

Speaker 1

"All right, every bunny.

Speaker 1

It's time to gather your laundry.

Speaker 1

You have three minutes.

Speaker 1

Last one back has to carry the soap."

Speaker 1

The bunnies shrieked and giggled and ran off to retrieve their laundry baskets.

Speaker 1

Soon, 13 woven baskets were lined up all in a row, each in front of a bunny.

Speaker 1

The basket in front of Sycamore, the very youngest bunny, was empty.

Speaker 1

"Sycamore, you were supposed to put your laundry in the basket," Eleanor said, patting her little brother on the shoulder.

Speaker 1

"I don't have any laundry.

Speaker 1

I've been wearing the same clothes every day this week."

Speaker 1

Eleanor and Elliot exchanged an amused look.

Speaker 1

The rest of the bunnies burst into giggles.

Speaker 1

"Sycamore, you can leave your basket at home."

Speaker 1

"Oh, okay Elliot scanned the line of bunnies.

Speaker 1

"Where's Forest?"

Speaker 2

"He was playing with his slingshot.

Speaker 2

He almost hit me with a walnut."

Speaker 1

Eleanor and Elliot sighed.

Speaker 1

Elliot took a step to go find Forest.

Speaker 1

But just then, he moseyed into the kitchen where the rest of them stood and set his laundry basket on the floor.

Speaker 1

"Forest," Eleanor said, "you're carrying the soap."

Speaker 1

"That's what I was hoping for.

Speaker 1

I want to carry the soap.

Speaker 1

Carrying soap is my favorite thing besides eating bugs."

Speaker 1

There was another round of giggles.

Speaker 2

"Forest, you don't eat bugs."

Speaker 1

"All right," Eleanor said, glancing at Elliot, who added, "Time to go."

Speaker 1

Out the door they went.

Speaker 1

How do you know I haven't eaten a bug?

Speaker 1

I eat plenty of bugs.

Speaker 1

It was still dark when the bunnies emerged from their underground home.

Speaker 1

The sky was bright and clear, dotted with thousands of stars.

Speaker 1

They had about two hours before dawn.

Speaker 1

The bunnies hopped in single file, led by Elliot.

Speaker 1

Eleanor took up the rear behind Little Sycamore, who skipped instead of hopped, the only bunny without a basket to carry.

Speaker 1

The rest of them carried their baskets with their two front paws.

Speaker 1

Most couldn't see overtop their piles of clothes.

Speaker 1

Forest was the only bunny who dragged his basket behind him.

Speaker 1

"Forest," Eleanor said, "you're going to get that basket dirty dragging it like that."

Speaker 1

"Then I'll wash the basket, too."

Speaker 1

Forest always had an answer.

Speaker 1

At the river, Elliot brought them to the cove where they always went on wash day.

Speaker 1

It was quiet in the cove, sheltered from the rushing current of the main stretch of river.

Speaker 1

One by one, the bunnies took their garments, sprinkled them with a dusting of soap flakes, and scrubbed them up and down the arrangement of ribbed stones Papa had placed there many moons ago for just that purpose.

Speaker 1

Then, one by one, the bunnies gathered their washed clothes and moved a little ways upstream, where they thoroughly rinsed them by swishing them this way and that in the gentle current.

Speaker 1

Little Bennett hummed as he twirled his footie pajamas in the water.

Speaker 1

Until they slipped from his paws.

Speaker 2

Oh, no, my pajamas.

Speaker 2

Those are my favorites.

Speaker 1

Eleanor, who was overseeing the rinsing, stared out at the dark water.

Speaker 1

"Oh, Bennett, I think they're gone.

Speaker 1

I don't know how we'll-- Forest, what are you doing?"

Speaker 1

Forest did not hear his eldest sister.

Speaker 1

He had leapt into the river.

Speaker 1

The bunnies were not supposed to swim, but then, Forest did plenty of things he was not supposed to do.

Speaker 1

Elliot furrowed his brow.

Speaker 1

Eleanor put a paw to her chin.

Speaker 1

Sycamore and Cynthia bit their bottom lips.

Speaker 1

The rest of the bunnies stood on the riverbank, holding their breath as they watched their brother.

Speaker 1

The woods were dim.

Speaker 1

The moonlight shone on the water, but Forest swam far enough out that it was difficult to see him fully.

Speaker 1

Just as Elliot ran forward to jump in after his little brother, Forest called out.

Speaker 1

I got them.

Speaker 1

I got the pajamas.

Speaker 1

His voice was so strong and so cheerful, it stopped Elliot in his tracks.

Speaker 1

He watched as Forest reappeared before them, head bobbing steadily above the surface.

Speaker 1

The smallest bunnies hopped in place and giggled as Forest swam ever closer.

Speaker 1

He emerged dripping from the water with the red pajamas dangling from a paw.

Speaker 1

His fur was soaked.

Speaker 1

"Here, Bennett," Forest said, as the bunnies gathered around him.

Speaker 1

"You might need to wash these again.

Speaker 1

I think I dragged them on the bottom."

Speaker 2

Oh, thank you, Forest.

Speaker 2

Forest, you're so skinny.

Speaker 1

Yeah, you look like a squirrel.

Speaker 1

The bunnies, including Forest, burst into giggles Forest shook himself, puffing out his fur, sending drops of water spraying, making them all laugh again.

Speaker 1

Elliot and Eleanor hugged their mischievous and brave little brother.

Speaker 1

"Oh, Forest," Eleanor said, shaking her head.

Speaker 1

"What are we going to do with you?"

Speaker 1

Elliot added.

Speaker 1

After the excitement of the runaway pajamas, the bunnies finished their washing and their rinsing and pulled their clothes out of the river to wring them out.

Speaker 1

"Bluebell, make sure you really wring those out, or they'll be heavy on the way home."

Speaker 1

"Okay, Eleanor."

Speaker 1

The stars and the moon had faded some, blending into the lightening sky by the time the bunnies finished.

Speaker 1

Elliot led the way once more, leading the line of bunnies through the gray woods, carrying their baskets filled with damp clothes all the way home.

Speaker 1

Outside the warren, Eleanor retrieved the bucket of clothes pins from the little shed under the maple tree.

Speaker 1

Fourteen bunnies went to work pinning their clothes to the lines Mother had strung up long ago, which stretched between three small trees.

Speaker 1

Well, 13 bunnies went to work.

Speaker 1

Sycamore ran, giggling, through the garments that were already pinned up.

Speaker 1

Eleanor and Elliot helped the younger bunnies, some of whom couldn't reach the clotheslines.

Speaker 1

Forest helped, too.

Speaker 1

They finished up just as the sun crept above the trees.

Speaker 1

"All right.

Speaker 1

Let's go read a book," Eleanor said, prodding them inside.

Speaker 1

One by one, the bunnies scampered down into their underground warren and clicked the door shut behind them.

Speaker 1

That evening, after the sun had made its way all the way across the sky, Papa Rabbit eased open the warren door, carrying an enormous sack of cabbage on his back.

Speaker 1

All was silent.

Speaker 1

He set down the sack in the kitchen and made his way to one of the children's rooms, the largest, where the eldest siblings slept.

Speaker 1

In it, he found 14.

Speaker 1

Yes, he counted 14 bunnies curled up asleep.

Speaker 1

They were all gathered around Eleanor, who had a large storybook open in her lap to a tale about bunnies who sneak into a garden.

Speaker 1

Elliot was beside her, with one paw encircling Sycamore and the other around Cynthia.

Speaker 1

Papa Rabbit smiled and quietly left them to sleep, then headed to the kitchen to make a tremendous pot of cabbage soup.
