Hello, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to another episode of Luke's English podcast.
So in this episode, I'm going to do these things.
First, I'm going to tell you about the results of the competition, the long running competition which has been going for about six months or something ridiculous like that.
So I'm going to tell you about the results of that competition, and then I'm going to announce the winner, which will be dramatic.
You'll find out who's actually won the dictionary.
There are also two runners up who will win other slightly older dictionaries too.
And then I'm gonna give you some news about various things, various updates, and news, and stuff like that.
好的。
Okay.
Right.
So the competition.
It started in January, I think, when I was entered in a competition to win a dictionary and to win a coveted prize known as the Macmillan Dictionary Prize for best blog 2011.
And guess what?
I won it.
I think you probably got that message.
I've been going on about it for about half a year now.
So then I I won the dictionary from them.
And I thought, what am I gonna do with this?
I don't need this dictionary.
I can already speak English.
I know what I'll do.
I'll give it to a listener.
But which one shall I give it to?
Then I decided that I would set up my own competition, and I thought, right.
How am I gonna do this competition?
What I want really is is for listeners to somehow participate in some way.
So I thought, I know.
I'll give them the opportunity to send me short m p three recordings.
Now I have to put a limit on the number of limits on the length of those recordings, don't I?
Because what might happen is people will send me these lengthy recordings of ten minutes or more.
And if I if I get a lot of those, it will be very difficult for me to manage, and it will be they'll be too long and difficult to publish and everything.
So I thought, no.
I'll have to restrict it to just two minutes.
That was the challenge.
We'll you know, you can judge for yourselves how successfully that challenge was met.
Well, the other part of that was that they had listeners had to respond by giving me a message recorded, you know, in some way, maybe sent as a m p three file or something, and in that message in two minutes to comment on one of the episodes of the podcast in some way.
To be honest, I've been fairly liberal with my application of those rules because my main objective with doing this was to just give listeners a chance to contribute something to the podcast and so that other listeners can get an idea of the sort of community of people around the world who listen to Luke's English podcast.
Now I also know that, for example, recording your own voice can be very difficult, either because you're stressed or because you don't have the facilities to do it.
So I did give some, I did give an option to send comments to me via email, and I received just a couple of those.
So most people did it in the in the way that I'd originally intended it, which was to record their voice.
And I got something like about 25 entries which is quite good really.
It's really the perfect number.
It made several podcasts in which you can hear those comments and if you go to my webpage you will be able to find those episodes.
网址是teacherluke.podomatic.com。
It's teacherluke.podomatic.com.
I'll be telling you more about website details later on.
I've got a few announcements and updates to give you on that.
So what about the winners?
So the parts of the rules again were so that in order to for people to win, they would get votes.
And how did listeners vote?
Well, you you know probably because I imagine you voted.
You go you went, onto the page, found the episode in, in which you you like someone's comment.
And then, if you basically like the comment, the the comment that you think is the best for whatever reason you think it's the best, but which comment you think is the best, you would vote by writing the name of that person and the country that they came from.
And I received loads and loads and loads of votes.
Loads.
I don't know how many.
It's like a lot.
And let's see.
After counting them up, I've got the results here.
So I've got them in kind of reverse order.
And so I'm just going to go through those now.
Remember, the top three will win prizes.
The first prize is the Macmillan Phrasal Verbs Dictionary which I received from Macmillan as my prize.
The second prize and third prizes are an Oxford phrasal verb dictionary and an Oxford idioms dictionary, which I picked up in a charity shop recently.
So three prizes to give away.
So we're going to start down with the a of people entered the competition and you can see lists of those names.
I'd like to thank everyone actually for entering.
In fact I'm going to now go to my computer so that I can read the list of names because I would like to thank everyone for taking part.
So I'm just going to go on to my website here where I have the names all listed.
I see the latest episode that I did was a well, I wrote everyone a note a while ago in which I said various things like, for example, the fact that I'm I I was not very well at that time.
I had a kind of a bad cold and a bad throat, and, I'm I'm feeling better, much better now.
Thank you.
Although I still got, still got a bit of a runny nose at times, but, I think that maybe even hay fever, I wonder.
I also did an episode recently about going to the pub and that was recorded with my brother and, in that episode we tell you everything that you need to know about, going to the pub here in The UK.
Just whatever information you can think of, I expect it's in there.
There's at least an hour of an episode and you can find out everything about how to be served, what kinds of beer you can drink and everything else.
It's your ultimate guide to going to the pub in The UK.
And then, some other episodes and Luke versus Oliver was in there as well.
It's another previous episode.
So I'm just scrolling through here.
There's so much content on my website.
I do hope that everyone really makes the most of all the videos and things that I'm posting here.
I post videos with most of my episodes and they're intended for you to watch because they are somehow connected to the episode of the podcast that you've that that they are added to.

Now let me give you some news.
Well, let's start here with the the first piece of news.
The facts you might already know that I spend a lot of time between London and Paris.
That's because my girlfriend lives in Paris.
And actually later on this year, I'm going to move to Paris for a certain amount of time, not sure how long exactly, and I'm going to look for work there, teaching work.
So hopefully I will find myself some work teaching in a school in Paris.
I'd like to go to a really good school and teach English there.
And also, I may be doing some other work and things like that, but I'll give you some more updates about that later.
Of course, the podcast will continue as normal and it'll it'll it'll just be that I am in a slightly different place, but I think it will be fascinating and you might find some very interesting episodes coming up about my experiences of living in another culture, my experience of even learning another language myself.
And I think it's something that will be very enriching and very informative for my understanding of language, my ability to to teach it effectively, and also just my perspective on things like cultural differences and cross cultural communication.
So I see it as a kind of really interesting step for me and something which will be a great benefit to my work and my life in general.
And I I plan to kind of add those influences into the podcast in the future, so you will find more and more interesting episodes, with a lot more perspective in them as well as language and all the other things that you can get from Luke's English podcast.
对。
Right.
My next piece of news is, well, the WordPress page, which I, have updated recently.
So that's that's Luke's English blog.

That's kind of side project, just the chance to play some music, and and to have a bit of chat as well.

On those videos, I go out into the streets of London and I interview native speakers of English about sort of various everyday topics and it's very interesting to hear English as it really is spoken by native English speakers in the streets in London.
So you can find the videos there on the website.

I think that will be really interesting.
So let's see, also some other sort of news, things that I've been doing personally.
Last week, as you may know, I was in Brighton all week.
It was also my birthday on Tuesday of last week, and I had a very good time.
And I got lots of really great messages from people on Facebook.
It's very lovely to hear your birthday messages.
Thank you very much.
In Brighton, I was performing a stand up comedy show with two other comedians, called Paul Langton and Alex Love, and we put on a show in Brighton as part of the Brighton Fringe Festival.
And we did a one hour comedy show on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of last week in a place called the Temple Bar on Weston Road in Brighton.
And so stand up comedy, I did fifteen minutes of material, Alex did fifteen minutes, and Paul did fifteen minutes as well.
Roughly, give or take a few minutes, we ended up doing an hour or just under an hour of of stand up comedy.
And we got we went out every day into the streets of Brighton with all our flyers in order to, try and, you know, inform people that the comedy evening was happening and to try and persuade people to come and see the show, and we did quite well.
We got decent audiences in every single night, and we all had a lot of fun.
It was quite exhausting being out in the sunshine all day handing out flyers, but obviously it was great as well because Brighton's a lovely place when the sun is out.
It's near the sea.
You get this nice sea air.
And, generally, Brighton is just very, very nice, very sleepy, very chilled out kind of place.
And and if you do come to England, I really recommend that you visit Brighton and you visit an area called The Lanes, which is where you find lots of really cool little shops and bars and really nice cafes.
And, of course, you can go down to the beach where you can, you know, you can have barbecues and have some drinks on the beach in the evening.
And there's the pavilion, which is full of amusements and and and of fun and games and things like that.
So the comedy was was great fun, quite exhausting, but very good experience.
And it was great to spend time with Paul and Alex and and also Mozz who was putting on a show at that time as well.
Great to hang out with them, my friends, my fellow comedians, and, we made each other laugh a lot.
And we also recorded several podcast episodes for Luke's English podcast, and you will find those being uploaded in the near future.
That's three episodes from the Brighton Fringe Festival.
And they're very entertaining and quite insightful as well, I hope.
I hope that you'll agree with me when you listen to them.
Let's see.
Some other things that I've been up to.
So I was ill.
I'm better now.
Thanks for your thanks for your concern if you sent me some messages.
My cousin got married at the weekend, not Ollie, but my other cousin.
I've got three cousins, Oliver, who you know, Georgina, who is two years older than Oliver and and me, and Victoria, is about three years older than us.
And this weekend, the weekend that we just had, Georgina got married to her fiancee, Lucan, and it was an absolutely fantastic wedding.
It was brilliant.
The family all the family and friends were invited, and we spent the day in the countryside in Suffolk, and that's in the East Of The UK in an area called East Anglia, Suffolk.
And absolutely beautiful day.
Just brilliant sunshine, blue sky, warm, nice cool breeze blowing.
It was the perfect day for a lovely English wedding in the countryside.
And it must be one of the nicest, most pleasant weddings that I've been to.
The service was really sweet.
George Georgina and Lucan obviously really love each other.
It was great to see all the members of the family and everything.
Lucan's speech was was excellent and so was his best man's speech.
And the location was incredible.
It was in a in an old country house, an an old country manor house in the middle of the countryside surrounded by a moat.
So it's surrounded by water.
You can only access the house over a a stone bridge.
And, all around the house were these beautiful gardens with incredible hedges and interesting herb gardens, and it was just amazing.
And then countryside all the way into the distance, you can see these rolling hills with trees on them and, deer wild deer, in the in the in the countryside there as well.
And so it was really fantastic, and we had a great party, afterwards.
And Oliver and me and our friends Brian and Steve, we played music there.
We we've we've play in a band together.
So we played about an hour of music and everyone danced, and it was brilliant.
My parent there was like a dancing competition, a disco dancing competition.
My mom and dad won because they're the best.
So it was really good wedding all around.
And so finally, great to have some sunshine here in The UK.
And it was it was just a really great day.
The location, I'd say, if you can imagine something like Pride and Prejudice, the Jane Austen novel, Pride and Prejudice, like some of the scenes from that, or maybe, I wonder Downton Abbey, if you ever watched that program about sort of upper class people who live in a manor house.
Just picture an amazing English country garden with a big old very fantastic looking house.
It was it was great.
And the wedding going on there the whole time.
Really brilliant.
So I've told you about the new website, told you about the wedding.
This weekend is a very sort of big big weekend in London because it's the Queen's Jubilee on Tuesday.
So there's Monday and Tuesday are both holidays here, bank holidays.
Although I'm actually working because the school is still open, so isn't there no holidays for me?
But for everyone else, the these are there's a big national holiday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, a very long weekend.
And it's the Queen's birthday on Monday.
And then on Tuesday, it's the Queen's Jubilee, which is her Diamond Jubilee.
And that represents, I think, sixty years that she's been Queen.
So she was crowned in 1952 and so sixty years later, here we are in 2012, the Queen is still going strong and it's her Jubilee year, it's the Diamond Jubilee.
Sixty years is an incredibly long time to reign as the monarch.
So you got to give her some respect just for surviving that long in such weird conditions.
Think sure for her, for most other people being in that position where you're the queen, you're, I mean, it must be quite strange.
You know, it's such an odd position.
No one else shares that position at all.
I'm not saying it's difficult being the queen.
I'm sure it's it's pretty great.
You know, you have people serving you all the time.
You anything you want, you can get it.
You know, you've got loads of money.
But at the same time, I know that the queen is kind of like a civil servant.
She's like a public servant in a way because she works pretty hard for The UK by going out, sort of representing, you know, doing all the sort of state ceremonial work that she does and opens things and appears in public.
I mean, she's got a very comfortable car, but nevertheless, she still has to go out and about and do stuff quite a lot.
She's, you know, she's got a lovely house and a lot of money, so it's not that bad.
But still, she she does do things.
Nevertheless, there's also the argument which says that the queen and the Royal Family is a kind of an old fashioned concept which doesn't really apply anymore.
And some people say that just the existence of an elite family of royals who have like more power than anyone else means that means that somehow this replicates a system of higher a system of hierarchy in the in the in the country, so that it kind of, you know, keeps the country an elite unfair place, and the the royal family just use a lot of taxes and that they should be got you know, we should get rid of them.
They're not democratically elected.
My opinion is kind of somewhere in between that, although I do think that it's a bit ridiculous to to have unelected people in positions of power.
I mean but at the same time, the royal family are not they're not really in a position of power.
They don't have much legislative or executive power, really.
That's the government.
And we elect the government.
And and so, you know, I think really it is it's a it's a it's a democracy at work, but it's just a bit of a strange democracy because we have this, this head of state, this this unelected head of state.
But, really, when you realize that the the role the queen has is just purely to be a symbol and purely to symbolize the state.
She's like the embodiment of the state of The United Kingdom Of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and she doesn't really have much power, then it's fine, really.
I don't mind having a separation between the head of state and the executive head of the country.
I think that's almost quite healthy because when you have, the head of state being also the executive leader, like, for example, in America perhaps, you as well as having this sense that you've democratically elected this person, and therefore, they should be answerable to you so that they're actually serving you, reflecting your wishes.
You also because they're the head of state, you also get this kind of over the top respect because the president, for example, represents something about the American state.
And if you're proud of America, it means you want you also want to be very proud of your president because they represent you.
You know, it's like, you know, god bless the president.
God bless America.
You know?
That sense.
Which is a bit odd because it means that you you forget that they're just a person who has got a role at a very important job to just reflect your wishes.
And if you give them all this sort of over the top respect, is it does it work?
I don't know.
I mean, I guess in places like France and in so many other republics, it it works absolutely fine.
But I'm I guess, really, my main point is that in Britain, we're just a bit strange.
We just have a slightly strange way of doing it, but it's still democracy really at the end of the day to an extent, although, you know, you could argue against that.
So that's rather a complicated set of opinions about the royal family there.
But nevertheless, the royal family now are more popular than they've ever been before.
Well, maybe not that they've ever been, but they're they're more popular than they have been for, you know, years, absolutely ages.
So I'm planning to do individual episodes on the Queen's Jubilee and on the the Olympics, which are happening this year.
But it's it's a big year for London.
The parts of the Jubilee celebrations this weekend will be that the River Thames will be just completely full of boats.
There'll be something like a 100 boats sailing down the Thames, all as part of a a massive, kind of event of pageantry celebrating the the, sixty year Jubilee of of the Queen.
So it's gonna be a huge event.
There'll be big parties in the streets and things, I imagine, because, you know, basically, the British, we just love an excuse to have a day off and have a party.
I think that's really the main thing.
We're we're obviously very pleased to have been given a day off.
And I think that the mood in general in the country is very quite patriotic at the moment.
I'm seeing more and more Union Jack flags flying everywhere, and everyone is really gearing up for a big celebration of the royal family and the queen and, like, Britain.
So that's quite an interesting, it's quite an interesting thing.
So I I'll I plan to do more on the Jubilee and the Olympics as well, which is coming up soon.
But it's it's a big, big year for London.
It seems that it's it's very exciting time here because lots of things are happening.
It all seems to be very intense.
There's gonna be loads of people coming.
The eyes of the world will be on London, so it's a kind of big time for London.
I just hope the weather stays good.
That's it's it always looks nice when you see footage of London on the news.
It always looks good when the weather's nice.
So I really hope the sun shines just so that people realize around world that London, you know, it's the weather's beautiful here sometimes.
Like this evening, for example, it's lovely and warm.
There's a nice cool breeze.
It's a it's a hot it's been a hot day.
I've got a suntan from the wedding, and, you know, it's great.
So it's a really good time to it's very interesting sort of time to be in London at the moment.
If things are going on in your cities, I'm sure they are because it's a very interesting time generally at the moment, then, you know, send send a add a comment to this episode.
Tell us what's going on, what big events are happening in your cities.
And do you think of the Olympics in London?
I wonder what people around the world think about that.
You'll be be able to contribute your comments in the next few podcasts, so please do.
I think that's pretty much it.
On another note, I, I discovered this really fantastic comedian.
He's he's he's he's, like, really interesting because he's a he's a comedian, but also he's a he's a brilliant musician.
His name is Reggie Watts.
Reggie Watts, r e g g I e w a t t s.
Reggie Watts.
And he's he's got an interesting past.
I'm not sure I know that I don't know that much about him at the moment because I've just discovered him really.
But, basically, he's a comedian, stand up comedian who also does music.
And he's incredibly talented because he can sing amazingly.
He's got a great soulful voice.
He can also be very funny.
He's a very natural comedian.
He's he's very funny.
He's incredibly intelligent.
His his lyrics are are very deep and very intelligent.
What else?
He he can play musical instruments, so he plays the keyboards and he's in he plays these beautiful soulful songs on the keyboards.
And also he's a brilliant beatboxer.
I don't know if you know what beatboxing is, but that's when you make the sounds of like a drum kit from your mouth.
So that that sort of, you know, we're like making sounds with your with your voice.
And he's brilliant at beatboxing, and he he uses a like an effects pedal so that he records himself beatboxing, and then he loops it.
So he he kind of lays down a track of of of a beatbox sort of thing, and then loops it and then sort of adds a baseline.
You know, something like that over the top of the beat, so it creates a song.
And then he creates, like, percussion over the top of that, and it starts to create this amazing groove, like a really good song.
And then he sings over the top of it, and he's he's got this, as I said, an amazing voice, and he can rap as well.
And he kind of he's very good at impersonating different languages.
So he can kind of, like, do different accents and talk in different styles.
So from a sort of linguist's point of view, I think it's fascinating because you can just listen to his voice doing all these different accents and different types of English.
So he sometimes he speaks in a formal way.
Sometimes he speaks in a very informal sort of black American way.
Sometimes he speaks with a posh English accent.
Sometimes he speaks with a kind of whatever his a sort of pretentious American accent.
Sometimes he does a Cockney accent, and it he's just amazing, really.
So I recommend that you check out Reggie Watts.
And I think what I'll do is instead of adding a song into this episode, I might leave that for a radio show at some point.
I'm gonna just put video a video on the bottom of this podcast, and you can have a look and just tell me what you think.
So that's the end of this episode.
Congratulations again to Camilla from Brazil, Carol from Belarus, and Kiyomi from Japan.
