Hello, ladies and gentlemen.
This is Luke, and just a quick podcast, another short one, today.
Just to let you know that I'm still here.
I'm still alive.
I haven't posted a a new podcast for a while now.
It's because I've been very busy.
I know I I was on holiday, last week, and I was having a very nice time relaxing, not doing any work, and just, putting my feet up, which is one of the reasons why I didn't upload a podcast last week because I was just relaxing, spending my free time, enjoying myself.
Right?
But I will upload a new podcast soon.
I'm back at work now, so I'm back in the rhythm of my daily working life.
So you will get a new podcast soon.
So this is basically another short quick podcast just to say hello, and I haven't forgotten about you.
As a matter of fact, I've had a couple of emails from a couple of people.
An email from someone called Mariano from Buenos Aires in Argentina.
So hello to you, Mariano.
I just sent you an email as well, actually.
Mariano's 34 years old.
He's downloaded some of my episodes.
He lives in Buenos Aires.
He says he loves the Beatles just like me.
Obviously, he's got very good taste in music.
And he's studying at a private university to become an English translator.
And as part of his course, has to read lots of different kinds of books.
In fact, he's just read the first Harry Potter book in English, which is interesting.
And he's also reading some Jane Austen and some Edgar Allan Poe.
So sounds like, Mariano, you're reading some really interesting literature there in English.
And, actually, Harry Potter is one of those books that students of English often consider reading because they think it might be a little bit easier to understand than other books that you find.
And actually, I think that Harry Potter is quite a difficult book to read because, you know, if you're if you're learning English, it's quite a difficult book to read because let's see.
A lot of the language that they use in Harry Potter is made up language.
That means it's not they're not real words that people normally use in their real life.
Yeah?
The writer of the Harry Potter books, JK Rowling, kind of invented not invented lots of new words that only exist in the Harry Potter universe.
So that's kind of difficult to understand.
But also the way she writes dialogues between the characters, she spells the words to show the accents of the characters.
Okay?
So it's it's a little bit difficult to read some of the dialogues because the spelling is strange.
Okay?
But also a lot of the language that Harry and his friends use is very kind of idiomatic and not easy to understand.
I mean, there's a lot of slang in there and a lot of jokes that people who aren't from England might not understand.
So if you want a challenge, if you want a a fun interesting book, then Harry Potter is a good one to read.
I think really if you're reading a book in English, if you're interested in in reading to help your English, it's very important that you just choose a book that you enjoy and choose a book a book that you're interested in reading.
Cause that's the most important thing, that you actually enjoy the experience of reading in English.
Because, you know, if you're just reading a novel just to study English, you're not going to get very much out of it.
You have to actually want to read it.
You have to be interested in the characters and interested in the story.
So I would rec I would recommend that you you buy a book in English and read one that you would be interested in reading in your own language as well.
Also, think about whether or not you're a good reader in your first language.
So a lot of people that I meet, they try to read books in English, and they realize that it's very difficult.
But it's also because they don't often read books in their own languages.
So it's not just reading English that's difficult, but reading.
Just just reading itself that's difficult.
So you gotta you gotta be realistic and choose a book in English that you would probably want to read in your own language too.
You could try reading a book that has been translated from your language into English and a book that you've already read in your language.
That way, you'll understand the story already, and and you won't get too confused by it.
Because the worst thing that can happen when you're reading a book in English is that you read page after page after page, and after, you know, 10 pages you realize that you haven't got a clue what is going on.
And that's obviously not a very fun or very pleasing experience.
So you could read a book that you've already read in your own language, and that means that you won't get lost.
It will help you to understand it a bit.
But, basically, choose a book that that you're gonna enjoy reading, and choose a book as well that is going to be a page turner.
And by a page turner, I mean, one of those books that just makes you just turn over the pages really quickly.
Just so just because you really want to find out what happens next.
Okay?
So a good example of that might be, for example, The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown.
Very, very popular book and a very popular page turner.
Now it's not a great work of literary genius, but it is a book that you can read easily and read quickly.
And it's a book that has a mystery in it, and it's quite interesting.
It's got, you know, an sort of adventure story involved, and it's the sort of book that you once you start reading it, you can't stop.
And I think that's probably a good thing if you're reading a book in English.
So thanks, Mariano, for your email.
I've also had an email from Inna in in The Ukraine, and Inna says that she really likes my podcast.
Thanks very much, Inna.
I'm just opening your email right now.
She said, it's very nice to become your friend on Podomatic.
I frankly think that your podcast is the best one for learning English.
It's alive, interesting, qualitative, and professional.
As you said, it's brilliant.
Well, thanks very much, Ina.
And, of course, you're right.
It is a brilliant podcast.
But no.
I really appreciate your email.
Thank you very much.
I'm very glad that you're enjoying the podcast and finding it useful.
Don't forget to everyone else who's listening, you can email me and send me your comments, and I'll read your comments on the on the podcast.
The email address is luketeacher@hotmail.com, and you spell my name l u k e.
Right?
不是l u c k。
Not l u c k.
Not it's not luck.
不是l o o k。
Not l o o k.
It's not look.
是Luke,拼作l u k e。
It's Luke, and that's l u k e.
A lot of students get that wrong, and they call me mister luck, or they say, look.
Here's Luke, or Luke, look at this or something.
It's hilarious.
It's really, really hilarious, and I never get bored of it, actually.
Yeah.
I yeah.
I I honestly never get bored of it.
I I'm lying.
I do get a little bored of those those jokes.
I hear them maybe once every week, once every two weeks.
没错。
Yeah.
After eight years of that, yeah, it gets a little boring after a while, but I don't mind.
I'm actually happy that students make jokes about my name because it means that they are having fun.
Right?
And that's important, isn't it, everyone?
是的。
Yeah.
Having fun.
It's essential in your life, especially when you're learning English.
It's very important to have fun when you're learning English, and it's very important that it's interesting, basically.
And that kind of relates back to the point I made about reading books.
You've got to read a book that's interesting for you because otherwise you're not going to enjoy it, and therefore you're not going to learn anything.
Right?
好的。
Okay.
This this podcast is, a little longer than I expected.
I thought it would just be kind of one minute or two minutes of me talking and just saying hello, but it's becoming quite long.
In fact, this is quite an interesting experiment for me to see how long I can just keep talking without really saying anything.
It's it's it's quite a challenge, but I probably could keep talking like this for quite a long time because as an English teacher, it's my job to talk to people.
Right?
And so I'm I think I'm quite good at talking without stopping, just talking and talking and talking.
没错。
Right.
I'm gonna stop now actually.
I really am.
And what I'm going to do actually is leave you with a little comedy clip for you to enjoy and to study.
And this comedy clip comes from, it comes from Monty Python's Flying Circus again.
I mentioned them in the last, extra podcast that I gave to you.
And this comedy clip is a scene from one of their movies.
The movie is called Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and the the film is set during medieval times.
So that's probably in the twelfth or thirteenth century, around when King Arthur was searching for the holy grail.
Okay?
So the movie is set in medieval times, and the scene that I'm gonna play for you is about a king who owns a castle and his son.
Right?
Now the king is very proud of his castle, and he's talking to his son because he wants his son to inherit the castle and carry on the family business.
Okay?
Now the on this day, his son is going to get married to a girl who is the daughter of another king who lives near to to this castle.
And this daughter, basically basically, if the king's son marries this this daughter, this woman, then eventually he will inherit and own even more land in the area.
So the king is very ambitious, and he wants his son to to be powerful and to inherit more land, by marrying this woman.
And but the son, has a different idea.
The son is not like his father.
Instead, he's interested in poetry and singing and romantic ideas.
He's not interested in, owning land and becoming a powerful king.
Right?
So the father is trying to convince his son to, be interested and to, try to, in inherit more land and become more powerful, but the son isn't interested.
Now I'm not gonna tell you any more about it.
Instead, I'm just gonna let you listen to it.
I have written the script for this episode, for this scene on the web page.
So as you listen to it, if you if there are things you don't understand, you can read the script.
Again, use a dictionary.
Do some studying.
Try to understand what they're talking about.
See if you can understand the jokes and the humor.
Don't forget if you if you wanna ask me questions, if there are things that you don't understand in this comedy scene, feel free to send me an email, and I'll help you to understand things that you don't understand, of course.
I don't have time to give you a full explanation in this podcast because, basically, it's bedtime.
It's a it's it's past 12:00 at night.
It's time for me to go to bed.
I'm very tired.
I've been working hard today.
Well, not that hard.
I've been working today.
I can't say perhaps I've been working hard.
I've but I've certainly been working today, and it's time for me to go to bed.
So here is the clip from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
The scene is called swamp castle.
我会把剧本留在网页上,teacherluke.podomatic.com。
I'm gonna leave you with a script on the web page, teacherluke.podomatic.com.
You can read it and study it there.
I will also leave you with a YouTube video so that you can watch the scene as well.
I hope you enjoy it, and I will upload another podcast very, very soon.
Thanks.
Bye bye bye bye One
day, lad, all this will be yours.
什么?
What?
The curtains?
不是。
No.
Not the curtains, lad.
All that you can see stretched out over the hills and valleys of this land.
That'll be your kingdom, lad.
Mother.
Father, lad.
Father.
But, father, I don't want any of that.
Listen, lad.
I've built this kingdom up from nothing.
When I started here, all there was were a swamp.
Well, the king said I was dab to build a castle in a swamp, but I built it all the same just to show them.
They sank into the swamp, so I built a second one that sank into the swamp.
So I built a third one That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp, but the fourth one stayed up.
And that's what you're gonna get, lad.
The strongest castle in these eyes.
But I don't want any of that.
I'd rather Rather what?
I'd rather just sit.
住手。
Stop that.
住手。
Stop that.
You're not going into a song while I'm here.
不行。
No.
Listen, lad.
In twenty minutes, you're getting married to a girl whose father owns the biggest tracts of open land in Britain.
But I don't want land.
Listen, Alice.
Herbert?
Herbert.
We live on a bloody swamp.
We need all the land we can get.
But but I don't like her.
Don't like her?
What's wrong with her?
She's beautiful.
She's rich.
She's got huge tracks of land.
I know.
But I want the the girl that I married to have a certain special son.
Cut that out.
Cut that out.
听着。
Look.
You're mine, Princess Lucky, so you better get used to the idea.
God, make sure the prince doesn't leave this room until I come and get him.
Not to leave the room even if you come and get him.
不。
No.
不。
No.
Until I come and get him.
Until you come and get him, we're not to enter the room.
不。
No.
不。
No.
不。
No.
You stay in the room and make sure he doesn't leave.
And you'll come and get him?
对。
Right.
We don't need to do anything apart from just stop him entering the room.
不。
No.
不。
No.
Leaving the room.
Leaving the room.
是的。
Yes.
Alright?
Alright.
Oh, if if if if if if we oh.
If oh.
看。
Look.
It's quite simple.
You just stay here and make sure he doesn't leave the room.
Alright?
Oh, I remember.
Can he leave the room with us?
不行。
No.
不行。
No.
不行。
No.
不行。
No.
You just keep him in here and make sure Oh, yes.
Well, keep him in here, obviously.
But if he had to leave and we were with him Just keep him in here until you or anyone else No.
Not anyone else.
Just me.
Just you.
回来。
Get back.
退后。
Get back.
Right?
对。
Right.
We'll stay here until you get back And, make sure he doesn't leave.
什么?
What?
Make sure he doesn't leave.
The prince?
是的。
Yes.
Make sure he doesn't leave.
Oh, yes.
当然。
Of course.
I thought you meant him.
You know, it seemed a bit daft me having to guard him when he's a guard.
Is that clear?
Oh, quite clear.
No problems.
好的。
Right.
Where are you going?
We're coming with you.
听着。
Look.
I want you to stay here and make sure he doesn't leave.
Oh, I see.
好的。
Right.
But, sir, the shut your noise, you.
Get that suit on.
And no singing.
Oh, go and get a glass of water.
好的。
Okay.
Hello again.
是我。
It's me.
I just thought I'd leave you another little message because I just can't stop, basically.
I hope you understood that.
I expect that was a little bit difficult to understand, in which case you know what you should do, don't you?
没错。
That's right.
You should look on the web page because there you will find a very carefully written script, and you can use that to help you understand that comedy sketch.
And hopefully, you will find it funny in the end and and learn a few things from it about a, English.
You can learn some English expressions there, And b, about the English sense of humor.
Right?
Some people say that the British sense of humor is strange or difficult to understand.
Well, I don't think so.
I think it's great.
I think it, you know, it's very, very funny, And British people really enjoy comedy, and they love laughing, and they love making each other laugh.
And so there's no reason why people from other countries can't understand and enjoy that too.
You just gotta try and understand it.
所以我建议你访问这个网页:teacherluke.polymathic.com。
So I recommend that you go to the web page, teacherluke.polymathic.com.
Read the, read the script, and it will help you to understand it.
