Now what I've done here is I I was just thinking about, like, my childhood, days gone by, and I just wrote down a list of sort of just expressions that I think people would commonly use when they're talking about growing up, being a child, going to school, that kind of thing.

所以我列出了我小时候经历的一些事情、我做过的事、我对学校的感受，并尽量收录了大量与这个主题相关的常用短语动词和其他表达。

So what I've done is I've written down a list of things that sort of happened to me when I was a kid, the things I did when I was a kid, what my experience of school was like and I've tried to include in it lots of phrasal verbs and lots of other expressions which I think are very common related to this subject.

所以首先，我会跟你们讲讲我的童年、成长经历和上学的日子，你们会听到大量不同的表达方式。

So what we're going to do first is I'm just going to kind of tell you about my childhood and my experience of growing up and my school days, and in that you'll hear loads and loads of different expressions.

所以第一次听的时候，请仔细听，试着找出我使用的那些自然表达，等我说完后，我会逐个详细解释这些表达的用法和含义。

So first time around just listen to it carefully, maybe try to identify some of the sort of natural expressions that I'm using, then when I finish doing that I will go through each expression in a bit more detail and kind of explain how they're used and what they mean.

So let's get started.

Childhood, my childhood.

我出生于1977年，事实上，我妈妈是在1977年的一个星期天生下我的。

Well I was born in 1977 and in fact my mum gave birth to me on a Sunday in 1977.

My parents decided to name me Luke.

They decided to call me Luke.

Now I wasn't named after Luke Skywalker even though I wasn't in 1977.

I wasn't named after Luke Skywalker from Star Wars.

Although I am a big Star Wars fan, I've always loved Star Wars, but I wasn't named after him.

我也不是取自保罗·纽曼主演的电影《冷手卢克》。

And, I wasn't named after Cool Hand Luke, the Paul Newman movie either.

相反，我其实是以我的曾曾祖父命名的，他也叫卢克。

Instead, I was actually named after my great great grandfather who was also called Luke.

尤其是我妈妈，非常敬仰他，因为他是我们家族中非常成功的人，所以基本上我妈妈特别崇拜他。

And, my mom, in particular, really looked up to him because he was like a very successful person in our family and, so basically my mom really looked up to him.

所以他们决定，我想他们是本来就喜欢‘卢克’这个名字，同时也部分想用这个名字来纪念我的曾曾祖父。

So they decided to kind of I think they liked the name Luke anyway, they also partly wanted to name me after, my great great grandfather.

So I grew up in West London.

That's where we lived in a place called Ealing in West London.

所以那正是我最初长大的地方。

So that's where I grew up initially.

In fact, I grew pretty quickly.

My parents used to measure me, on the wall.

So I'd stand on the wall and they'd use a pencil to mark a line on the wall.

And then every few months or something, they'd measure me again, and we could see how much I'd grown.

So I grew pretty quickly like most kids grow pretty fast.

I wasn't allowed to have a TV in my bedroom, for example.

I wasn't allowed to eat too many sweets, things like that.

But they weren't too strict either.

My parents were comfortable with money, but not really well off or rich or wealthy, but they were just comfortable.

So I wasn't really born with a silver spoon in my mouth or anything like that.

I'm I'm just from a normal family.

我的父母和家人过去常说我的长相随我父亲。

My parents and family, used to say that I looked, that I took after my dad.

他们说我确实很像我父亲，因为长相随他，而且和他一样热爱运动且擅长音乐。

They they said that I really took after my dad because I looked like him, and I was quite sporty and good at music like him.

So I also, I could be a bit naughty and badly behaved at times, and my parents would sometimes tell me off and send me to my room, but it was never that serious.

Actually, I went through quite a kind of naughty phase.

有几年我特别固执。

I was quite stubborn for a few few years.

我记得妈妈带我去商店，回家路上她总是很头疼。

I remember, like, my mom having trouble kind of like if if, she took me to the shops when we walked back.

如果我有点不高兴什么的，就会直接停下脚步说，我不走了。

If I was kind of like annoyed or something, would just stop walking and say, I'm not moving.

你知道吗？

You know?

所以我小时候挺调皮的，还有点倔强，不过后来慢慢改掉了。

I cannot so I was quite naughty and, a bit stubborn, but I grew out of it.

实际上，我度过了那个叛逆期。

Actually, I grew out of that phase.

我有个哥哥，所以我经常穿他的旧衣服。

I have an older brother, so I, would get a lot of his old clothes.

所以我穿他的二手衣服。

So I'd wear his hand me down clothes.

我们还经常玩我爸爸和叔叔传下来的玩具。

And we also used to play with toys that had been handed down by my dad and my uncle.

我们有好多这些旧玩具，都是我爸爸传下来的。

So we had all these old toys that we used to play with that had been handed down by, my my father.

我小时候有一段时间曾经陷入过撒谎的阶段。

I I I kind of went through a sort of lying phase for a little while when I was a kid.

我觉得这对孩子来说挺正常的，我父母有时候会怀疑我在撒谎。

I think that's quite normal for children, and and my parents would sort of suspect that I was lying about something.

他们知道我在编瞎话或吹牛，就只是让我自己承认。

You know, they would know that I was telling fibs or telling tall tales, and they just sort of make me own up to it.

You know?

但我克服了撒谎的阶段，慢慢就不这样了。

But I got over my lying phase, and I kinda grew out of it.

我小时候特别多动。

I was quite hyperactive as a kid.

我总是，你知道的，精力太旺盛了。

I always had, you know, too much energy.

我总是充满活力。

I I was always full of beans.

我父母总是好奇我哪来这么多精力。

My parents would wonder where I'd get my energy from.

后来我发现，我小时候喝的橙味饮料里含有大量E编号添加剂，满是让我多动的化学物质。

It turns out the orange squash that I used to drink when I was a kid was just full of e numbers, so full of chemicals that made me hyperactive.

有时候，我和我哥哥会熬夜听收音机，或者玩我们的星球大战玩具。

And sometimes my brother and I would stay up late listening to the radio or playing with our Star Wars figures.

当然，我们必须非常安静，因为我们不被允许超过规定时间还醒着。

Obviously, we had to be very quiet because we weren't allowed to stay up past a certain time.

我过去非常崇拜我的哥哥。

I used to look up to my older brother quite a lot.

他只比我大两岁，但小孩子眼里这已经是很长的差距了。

He's only two years older than me, but that's quite a lot when you're a kid.

所以，我过去很仰慕他。

So, you know, I used to look up to him.

他有一群很酷的朋友。

He had cool friends.

I'd sort of enjoy hanging out with him and kind of watching him do do his artwork.

他经常画画，我就坐在一旁看他创作。

He used to do lots of art, and I'd kind of sit there watching him do his art.

所以我一直很仰慕他。

So I kind of looked up to him.

说实话，我可能是个挺烦人的小弟，他有时候就会让我滚开之类的。

To be honest, I was probably quite an annoying little brother, and sometimes he would just tell me to get lost and things like that.

生日和圣诞节总是特别棒的日子，我非常期待，甚至会倒数着日子，到了生日前一天晚上都激动得睡不着。

Birthdays and Christmas were always really great days, and I'd look forward to them so much that I'd be literally counting down the days before my birthday, and then I wouldn't be able to sleep the night before.

小孩子的时候，牙齿特别重要，因为你的第一副牙齿——乳牙，有时候会自然脱落，每次掉牙都是一件大事。

When you're a kid, teeth your teeth are quite important because, really, your first set of teeth, your your baby teeth or your milk teeth, they kind of would would fall out sometimes, and that was always quite a big event when a tooth came out.

你会试着把掉下的牙齿保存起来，然后放在枕头底下，等着牙仙子晚上来把它换成一枚硬币。

And you'd try to keep the tooth and then put it under your pillow, for the tooth fairy who would come in the night and replace it with a coin.

This is like one of those things that you believe when you're a child.

唯一的问题是，我其实害怕牙仙子。

The only thing is that I was actually scared, of the tooth fairy.

我害怕她，对牙仙子感到恐惧。

I was I was afraid of it, frightened of the tooth fairy.

所以我通常会把枕头放在房间外的走廊里，上面放着那颗牙齿。

And so what I would actually put my pillow outside my room in the hallway with a tooth under it.

And then that way, the the tooth fairy didn't have to come into my bedroom because I was scared of it.

It's kind of pathetic.

I know.

I also found out when I was a child that that father Christmas, Santa Claus wasn't real.

有一晚，我太兴奋了，睡不着觉。

When one night, I couldn't sleep because I was too excited.

半夜里，有人进了房间，开始往我的袜子里塞礼物。

And, sometime during the night, someone entered the room and started filling my stocking with presents.

我以为是圣诞老人，于是假装睡着，偷偷看着他。

I thought it was Father Christmas, so I pretended to be asleep, but I secretly watched him.

那是我爸爸，他甚至没穿圣诞老人的衣服。

It was my dad, and he wasn't even dressed as Santa.

所以，很明显，我意识到圣诞老人根本不存在。

So, obviously, then I realized that Santa didn't really exist.

我上过一所幼儿园，那是大约三到四岁时上的学前班。

I went to a nursery school, which is a kind of preschool when you're about sort of three or four years old.

我只记得在那里玩各种游戏。

And all I remember doing there is just playing games.

然后我上了一所很普通的公立综合中学。

Then I I went to quite a normal comprehensive state school.

在英国，我们的学校名称有时会让人感到困惑。

In The UK here in in Britain, the the names of our schools can be a bit confusing.

因为首先，有综合学校，这些是由政府资助的。

Because, basically, first of all, you have comprehensive schools, and those are ones which are paid for by the government.

所以它们就像是公立学校、免费学校，也就是综合学校或公立学校。

So they're like state schools, free schools, let's say, comprehensive schools or state schools.

然后还有私立学校，上这些学校是需要付费的。

Then you've got, private schools, which are, you you have to pay to go to one of those schools.

所以你得花钱。

So you have to pay.

而且大多数学校都有入学水平考试。

And most of them have kind of entry level exams.

你要达到一定的学业水平才能进入私立学校，而且你的父母还得付费。

You have to be a certain level of student to to get into a private school and then your parents have to pay.

Okay?

但还有一些顶尖学校，奇怪的是它们被称为公立学校。

But then you've got the top level schools and those strangely are called public schools.

实际上，这些公立学校就是私立学校。

Now, public schools are actually just private schools.

它们是非常排他性的私立学校。

They're very exclusive private schools.

而我们所说的公立学校其实是综合学校。

And what we would call a public school would be a comprehensive school.

对吧？

Right?

所以实际上，在英格兰，公立学校是那种非常、非常、非常难进入且极其昂贵的顶尖学校。

So actually, in in England, a public school is like a very, very, very difficult to get into and very expensive, very high level.

这些学校比如伊顿和哈罗。

These are schools like Eton and Harrow.

Prince William went to Eton, I think.

我来给你举个例子，说明这种学校是什么样的。

Just gonna give you an example of what kind of school that is.

我就读的是综合学校，而你上的第一所学校是小学。

So I just went to comprehensive school, And the the first school you go to is your primary school.

小学是从大约五岁到十一岁。

That's from age about five to 11.

从小学毕业后，你会升入中学。

And then from primary school, you you move on to secondary school.

中学通常是十一岁到十五或十六岁左右。

Secondary school would be kind of 11 to about 15 or 16 years old.

然后如果你愿意的话，那时就可以离开学校去找工作。

And then if you can if you can leave school then and get a job if you want.

但如果你选择继续深造，可能会进入像预科学院这样的院校。

But if you choose to, you can go on to study more, and you would do you'd probably go to a college, like a sixth form college.

在15或16岁时，你们要参加叫做GCSE的考试，大多数人会考9门科目，比如英语语言、英国文学、历史、地理、物理、生物、化学，还有数学、法语、戏剧、音乐之类的课程。

When when you're when you're 15 or 16, you take exams called GCSEs, and most people take about nine subjects, things like English language, English literature, history, geography, physics, biology, chemistry, stuff like, you know, maths, maybe French, drama, music, things like that.

之后你们会继续攻读A-levels，这是更高一级的学历认证。

And then after that, you go on to do a levels, which is the next level of qualification.

然后你在18岁左右参加A-level考试，大多数人会考三门A-level或大约六门AS-level。

And you take your a levels when you're about 18 years old, and most people take about three a levels or maybe about six a s levels.

一旦你拿到A-level成绩，就可以申请大学了，进入好大学需要一定数量的A-level科目。

And then once you've get your a levels, you can then sort of apply to go to university, and you need certain number of a levels to get into good universities.

英国的大学基本上可以分为三种类型。

In the universities here, you've got basically like, probably like three types of university here.

最著名的当然是牛津和剑桥。

The most famous ones are obviously Oxford and Cambridge.

它们是非常成熟且著名的大学。

They're very well established, very famous universities.

这两所大学合称为牛剑。

And those two universities together are called Oxbridge.

所以如果你上了牛剑大学，就意味着你上了一所非常好的大学。

So if you went to an Oxbridge University, it means you go to a very good university.

接下来是另一类大学，这些地方也同样优秀。

Then the next level of university, and and these are also excellent places.

再往下一级是红砖大学。

These the next level down would be the red brick universities.

它们之所以这么叫，是因为这些建筑通常使用红砖建造，因为它们建于大约世纪之交，甚至可能更早一些。

And they're called that because they're typically, the buildings are made using red brick because they were built, let's see, around the turn of the century, maybe a bit earlier than then.

So that was the the typical of the architecture at the time, though.

Buildings would be constructed using red bricks.

这些就是红砖大学，它们都非常优秀。

So those are the red brick universities, and they're very good.

Then, the third level of university would be the ex polytechnic universities or former polytechnic universities.

A polytechnic college actually sort of twenty or thirty years ago would have been a college of further education that specialised in technical qualifications and they actually gained the rights to be called universities some time ago and then they offered similar courses to the other universities in the country and those are called ex polytechnic universities or ex polys.

I went to an ex polytechnic university called Liverpool John Moors and actually the department in which I studied was very good.

It had a very good reputation.

So all of those universities are the sort of three types of university.

So I I went to primary school when I was a kid, of course.

I absolutely hated my first day.

I didn't wanna go at all.

My mom had to drag me in to the building literally, and I cried.

那简直是一场噩梦。

It was an absolute nightmare.

But, you know, I got used to it slowly.

当我九岁的时候，我爸爸得到了晋升。

And when I was nine years old, my dad got a promotion in his job.

于是我们搬出了伦敦，搬到一个基本上在荒郊野外的乡村地区。

And so we moved out of London, and we moved to an area basically in the countryside just in the middle of nowhere.

所以我们从城市搬到了乡村，这可是个巨大的变化。

And so we moved from, like, the city out into the countryside, which was quite a big change.

我去了一所乡村学校，这挺奇怪的，因为我是个城里孩子，你知道的。

I went to a countryside school, which was quite weird because I was a city lad, you know.

I was from the city, a city kid.

其他孩子都因为我说话方式不同而欺负我。

And all the other kids kind of picked on me because I talked differently.

我并没有被真正欺凌，但确实被捉弄过。

I didn't really get bullied, but I did get picked on.

最终，我学会了为自己挺身而出，其他孩子也就不再欺负我了。

Eventually, I I learned to stand up for myself, and the other kids stopped picking on me.

我并不是那种特别乖或讨好老师的学生，但还算聪明，偶尔有点调皮。

Now I wasn't really a SWAT or a teacher's pet, but I was quite bright, if a little bit cheeky at times.

我对老师挺调皮的，但因为人还不错，所以总能蒙混过关。

I was quite cheeky to my teachers, but I got away with it bit because, basically, I was I was nice.

有几次，我被老师训斥了。

A couple of times, I got told off by teachers.

我被罚过几次留校，还得抄写句子作为惩罚。

I got a couple of detentions, and I had to write lines as punishment.

那时候，学校里没有体罚。

The in those days, there was no physical punishment at school.

鞭子早在几年前就被禁止使用了。

The cane had been, like, banned some years before.

所以我通常都会做作业，虽然有时候不做，就得找些糟糕的借口，比如弄丢了之类的。

So now I usually did my homework, although sometimes I didn't do it, and I'd have to give some kind of bad excuse, like I lost it or something like that.

有些孩子行为非常恶劣。

Some kids were really badly behaved.

他们经常逃学或者欺负其他同学。

They'd kind of bunk off school or bully the other kids.

有些孩子被开除或停学了。

Some and some kids got expelled or suspended.

我的学校有点混乱，但你知道，对于综合学校来说，这其实挺正常的。

My school was a bit rough, but, you know, that's quite normal really for comprehensive schools.

显然，我每所学校的校服都必须穿着。

Obviously, I had to wear a uniform in every school that I went to.

我必须穿校服。

I had to wear a uniform.

在我上中学时，校服包括黑色长裤、黑色鞋子、白色或灰色衬衫、一件带有徽章的黑色西装外套，以及一条特定颜色的领带。

In my secondary school, my uniform was that I had to wear black trousers, black shoes, a white or grey shirt, a black blazer which had a badge on it, and a school tie which had a particular colour.

我的中学领带是黑色底配红色斜条纹，而我之前学校的领带是蓝色底配黄色横条纹。

My my school tie was black with red diagonal stripes, and my previous school was blue tie with yellow stripes across it.

所以我必须穿校服，我觉得这其实挺好的。

So I had to wear a uniform, which I think is quite good, really.

让孩子们穿校服是个不错的主意，因为至少能让所有孩子看起来都一样。

It's quite a good idea to make kids wear uniforms because at least it makes all the children kind of the same.

你知道，这样就不会让人觉得有些孩子特别穷，有些孩子特别富有或家境优越。

You know, you don't get that sense that some some of the kids are very poor, some of the kids are kind of very rich or well off.

如果大家都穿同样的衣服，就意味着大家处于一个平等的水平，我觉得这是件好事。

Instead, if they all wear the same clothes, it means they're kind of on an equal kind of level, which I think is a good thing.

而且当你穿着校服时，也会有一种自己正在为工作做准备的感觉。

You also get the idea that when you when you're in a uniform, it feels like you're being prepared for work.

你知道吗，后来你上班穿西装的时候，感觉就像穿着校服一样。

You know, like, later on when you wear a suit, when you go to work, it feels like you're wearing a school uniform.

所以我认为，作为一种让人稍微变得正式一点的训练方式，这其实挺聪明的。

So it's I guess it's kind of quite clever really as a way of training people to be a little bit formal or something.

我不确定。

I don't know.

So I started growing up into my teenage years.

I became a teenager.

I became an adolescent.

你知道，我经历了所有那些身体上的变化。

You know, I had all those physical changes.

I went through puberty, and, basically, I got through school okay despite the difficulties that you typically go through when you're a kid.

在英国，中学阶段可能非常艰难，因为要面对同龄人的压力。

In The UK, secondary school can be quite tough because of peer pressure from the other kids.

那时候你非常敏感，很难受，因为你正在真正地认识自己。

You feel very sensitive at that time and it's hard because you're really learning who you are.

你体内激素大量涌动，身体也在发生巨大变化。

There's lots of hormones racing around inside your body and you're changing a lot physically.

在人生的这个阶段，很多事情都可能让你感到非常尴尬。

It can be very embarrassing at that time of your life.

在英国，你只能尽力适应，不能失去其他孩子的尊重。

Now in The UK, you have to just kind of get by without losing the respect of the other kids.

你必须相当受欢迎，才能避免尴尬或被欺负、被欺凌。

You have to be quite popular in order to just avoid embarrassment or avoid being picked on and bullied.

你得努力吸引女生，避开霸凌者，变得受欢迎，体育要好；如果你体育不好，那就得幽默风趣。

You have to try and impress girls, avoid the bullies, be popular, be quite good at sport, or if you're not good at sport, you have to be funny.

你不能太书呆子气或者太死板。

You shouldn't be too geeky or swatty.

你最好避免和老师发生冲突。

You should basically avoid trouble with the teachers.

认真完成作业，取得好成绩，让父母开心。

Do your work, get good results, and keep your parents happy.

这基本上就是你在学校里必须做到的事情。

That's basically what what you've got to achieve at school.

这可能很难。

It can be hard.

我靠一直踢足球挺过来的。

I survived by playing football just all the time.

我完全痴迷于足球，每时每刻都在踢球或想着足球。

I was completely obsessed with football, and every moment would be spent playing football or thinking about football.

我还学会了弹钢琴，那是我独自一人时的私密爱好。

I also learned to play the piano, and that was, like, my own private thing that I do on my own.

就只是弹钢琴。

Just play the piano.

那是一段非常美好的经历，我渐渐意识到自己在音乐方面有些天赋。

That was very nice experience, and I kind of learned that I had some kind of skill as a musician.

我真的活在自己的世界里。

I kind of lived in my own world, really.

I feel like I was just kind of slightly disconnected just in my own world.

I listened to, like, lots of good music on my Walkman all the time.

And I had all these tapes that had been given to me by my uncle and my dad, and they listened to lots of really good music.

I mean, I often would lose concentration, but I was quite imaginative, so I did alright.

So what I'd like to do now is just go back through everything I've just said there and look at some of the specific expressions and bits of language that I used.

So there's so much language, so many expressions that I just used there.

Let's go through them.

First one, I was born.

Right?

So, obviously, I'm sure you know that expression to be born.

Like, I was born, he was born.

Fine.

在1977年，显然我们用介词来表示年份。

In 1977, obviously, we use a preposition like that with a year.

So when you're describing the year, then you say in, like in 1977, in 1993, whatever.

So my mom gave birth to me or she had me.

That means the actual physical act of, like, you know, producing a child in a hospital.

So to be named after someone means to be given the same name as someone else.

So it could be the same name as someone older than you in your family or maybe just named after a famous person.

例如，最近大卫·贝克汉姆和维多利亚·贝克汉姆生了一个女儿，我想他们决定给她取名为哈珀·赛文。

For example, recently, David Beckham and Victoria Beckham had a baby girl, and I think they decided to to to name her Harper seven.

他们选择‘哈珀’这个名字，是因为《杀死一只知更鸟》这部伟大著作的作者是哈珀·李。

Now they the the word Harper, they chose that because of the author of a great book called To Kill a Mockingbird, and that was written by Harper Lee.

And apparently, they love that book, so they decided to name their daughter after Harper Lee, the writer of To Kill a Mockingbird.

Right?

So in in my case, my parents decided to name me after, or I was named after, my great great grandfather.

So like a a a person in my family.

That means that you can you look up to someone younger than you?

If you look up to someone, it just means you really respect them.

You think that they're great and you really respect who they are.

So it could be for anyone, anyone older than you or younger than you.

Usually someone that you know, I think.

Normally someone you know, like a friend or a member of your family, to look up to someone.

So my mom really looked up to my great great grandfather because he was a very successful person, you know, he was a businessman and so on.

So I grew up in West London, and I grew pretty quickly.

现在，'grow' 和 'grow up' 的区别在于，'grow up' 指的是从幼儿慢慢转变为大一点的孩子，再变成成年人的过程。

Now the difference between to grow and to grow up, Well to grow up means to sort of slowly change from being a young child to an older child to an adult.

所以，'grow up' 就是经历从孩子变成青少年，再从青少年变成成年人的这个过程。

So it's that process of changing from a child into a teenager and a teenager into an adult to grow up.

对吧？

Right?

但‘生长’只是指身体上变高。

But to grow is just like physically to become taller.

Just like the way a plant grows, you also grow.

你会长得更高。

You become taller.

Right?

So I grew pretty quickly.

I was brought up by my parents.

A lad is an informal word for like a young man, a lad.

So I was quite a good lad.

My parents were quite strict.

‘严格’意味着严厉，会施加很多纪律和惩罚。

Strict means tough, you know, imposing lots of dis discipline and punishment.

严格。

Strict.

他们确实相当严格，但也不是太严苛。

They were they were quite strict, but not too strict.

我不觉得我小时候被宠坏了。

I I don't think I was spoilt or spoiled as a child.

如果你小时候被宠坏了，那就意味着父母会满足你所有的要求。

Now if you as a child, if you're spoiled or spoilt, it means that your parents gonna give you everything that you want.

而最终，因为你总是能得到你想要的一切，你会变成一个非常糟糕、苛刻的孩子，时刻期待着拥有所有东西，但永远觉得不够好。

And then eventually, because you always get everything you want, you become, like, really sort of horrible, demanding child who expects to have everything that they want at all times, and nothing is good enough.

So that's like a spoilt child.

Some of my friends were quite spoilt when I was a kid, and I'd go to their house and they would have everything, all the newest computer games, all the newest toys, but they were never really happy with any of it.

Whereas with me and my brother, we had some new toys, but we were quite happy to just be creative with the old stuff that we had.

There were plenty of things that we weren't allowed to do.

For example, we we weren't allowed to watch James Bond or the a team.

I had no TV in my room and so on.

Not not too many sweets.

在英式英语中，我们说‘sweets’。

In British English, we say sweets.

在美国，他们说‘candy’或‘candy’。

In America, they say candy or candy.

所以我们称它们为‘sweets’。

So we call them sweets.

我父母生活还算舒适，但并不算富裕或有钱。

My parents were quite comfortable, but not really well off or rich or wealthy.

‘well off’只是‘富有’的另一种说法。

So well off is just another word for kind of rich.
