Just before we begin, I wanna give you a reminder that I would like you to send me your stories, send me your descriptions of strange, creepy, unexplained, or frightening experiences.

Speaker 0

你有没有过那种怎么也说不明白的怪事,或者印象特别深的可怕经历?

Speaker 0

描述一下,然后发给我。

Describe it, and send me your description.

Speaker 0

我会收集这些描述。

And I'll be collecting descriptions.

Speaker 0

我最喜欢的那个故事,你就赢了,还能拿到安娜·布鲁克斯的新书一本。

Speaker 0

你最近在播客里听过她聊过这本书。

You heard her talking about it on the podcast recently.

Speaker 0

书名叫《巧克力致死》。

It's called death by chocolate.

Speaker 0

所以,最棒的故事不仅能赢书,我也会挑一些我喜欢的,在接下来的节目里读给大家听。

And, so the best story will win a copy of the book, but also stories that I like, I will read them out on the podcast in a forthcoming episode.

Speaker 0

所以,那些奇怪、吓人、说不清道不明或者吓人的经历,你遇到的怪事,都发给我吧。

So strange, creepy, unexplained, or frightening stories, descriptions of weird things that have happened to you, send them to me.

Speaker 0

你可以发邮件到 LukeTeacher@Hotmail.com,或者直接在安娜·布鲁克斯那期节目的评论区留言——就是几期之前那期。

You can email LukeTeacher@Hotmail.com, or just leave your description in the comments section of the Anna Brooke episode, which is just a a couple of episodes ago.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

为了给你们一点灵感,讲讲这种诡异又说不清的故事,这期《通过短篇故事学英语》,我来分享一个特别古怪的经历,是我当年在戴夫·艾伦的电视节目里听来的。

So to give you a bit of inspiration on the theme of creepy unexplained stories, in this episode of Learn English with a Short Story, I'm gonna tell you a very odd story, which I first heard from Dave Allen on his TV show.

Speaker 0

你可能不知道戴夫·艾伦是谁,他是爱尔兰的喜剧演员兼讲故事高手,七十年代到八十年代在英国电视上有个很火的节目,很多人都看他的秀。

I don't know if you know about Dave Allen, but he was an Irish comedian and storyteller who had a great program on British television in the nineteen seventies and nineteen eighties, and a lot of people watched Dave Allen on his television show.

Speaker 0

我记得小时候在电视上看过他。

You know, I remember seeing him on TV.

Speaker 0

我爸妈都是他的粉丝。

My parents were fans of his.

Speaker 0

戴夫·艾伦的节目特别有意思,他就搬个小凳子坐在观众面前,娓娓道来一个个故事。

What was so great about Dave Allen's show is that he simply sat on a stool in front of an audience and told stories to everyone.

Speaker 0

他真是讲故事的一把好手。

He was a fantastic storyteller.

Speaker 0

他特别特别搞笑,但讲的故事又特别抓人。

He was very, very funny, but also his stories were extremely compelling.

Speaker 0

他真是个讲故事的高手。

He was a brilliant storyteller.

Speaker 0

所以现在我要讲的,就是他其中一个故事,你们仔细听啊。

And so this is one of his stories, okay, that I'm gonna tell you right now.

Speaker 0

这个故事叫《坏房间》。

It's called The Bad Room.

Speaker 0

你们要特别特别认真地听。

I'd like you to listen very, very carefully.

Speaker 0

这算是给你们的英语小测验。

A little test for your English.

Speaker 0

故事最后一句到底什么意思?

What is the meaning of the last line of the story?

Speaker 0

最后一句到底有什么深意?

What's the significance of the last line of the story?

Speaker 0

所以仔细听好了。

So listen carefully.

Speaker 0

讲完我再一一解释。

I will explain everything afterwards.

Speaker 0

我会一句一句带你过,把生词都讲清楚,你真能从中学到不少英语。

I'll go through the story line by line explaining bits of vocabulary so you can genuinely learn a lot of English from this.

Speaker 0

现在咱们开始吧。

But now let's begin.

Speaker 0

咱们来读《坏房间》。

Let's read The Bad Room.

Speaker 0

准备好了啊。

And here we go.

Speaker 0

这就是《坏房间》。

So this is The Bad Room.

Speaker 0

如果可以的话,我想跟你们讲个真事,关于一栋房子的故事——那房子有个爱尔兰人说的‘坏房间’。

If I may, I'd like to tell you a true story, a story about a house, A house that had what people in Ireland call a bad room.

Speaker 0

这间屋子有种氛围,一种让人不舒服的沉重感。

This room had an atmosphere, an unwelcoming heavy presence.

Speaker 0

没人愿意进去。

People were reluctant to go into it.

Speaker 0

大家都躲着它,说话也压低声音,根本不想沾上它。

They avoided it, spoke about it in lowered voices, and refused to have anything to do with it.

Speaker 0

要是有客人听说了这间房,想看看,住那儿的人总会先警告他们。

If visitors heard about the room and asked to see it, the people who lived there would always warn them.

Speaker 0

千万别靠近那间房。

Please do not go near the room.

Speaker 0

如果非去不可,一定得有人陪着,千万别一个人去。

And if you must go near it, go with someone else, never alone.

Speaker 0

因为这房间有种诡异的吸引力,一种致命的魔力,像磁铁一样把人往里拽。

Because that room had an attraction, a strange, fatal attraction, something that drew people inwards like a magnet.

Speaker 0

那些胆大或傻到敢开门的人,可以往里看一眼,但绝对不能跨过门槛。

Those brave or foolish enough to open the door would be allowed to look inside but never to step across the threshold.

Speaker 0

而且,总会有同伴站在他们身后,随时准备拉住他们。

And always, their companion would stand behind them ready to hold them back.

Speaker 0

因为门一打开,那股吸引力就变得更深了。

Because once the door opened, the pool deepened.

Speaker 0

人们都忍不住想进去。

People wanted to go in.

Speaker 0

必须有人拦住他们。

They had to be stopped.

Speaker 0

有个年轻小伙子,固执又倔强,非得证明大家都错了。

One foolish young man, stubborn and determined to prove everyone wrong, ignored all the warnings.

Speaker 0

大家求他、骂他、冲他大喊,甚至跟他动手。

People pleaded with him, scolded him, shouted at him, fought with him.

Speaker 0

但他就是说:不。

And he said, no.

Speaker 0

我要在这房间里过一夜,彻底破除这些迷信胡话。

I will spend the night in that room and rid us all of this superstitious nonsense.

Speaker 0

他一走进那间屋子,门就自己缓缓关上了,没人碰过它。

He stepped inside that room, and the door, without a single human touch, closed slowly behind him.

Speaker 0

所有人都等着。

And they all waited.

Speaker 0

他们一直等到早上六点左右。

They waited until about 06:00 in the morning.

Speaker 0

突然,那间屋子里传出一声尖叫——那是一种恐怖到撕心裂肺、让人血液凝固的尖叫。

And from that room came a scream, A horrendous, soul destroying, blood freezing scream.

Speaker 0

大家冲进房间,撞开门一看,里面空无一物。

They all rushed up to the room and burst through the door, and there was nothing there at all.

Speaker 0

没有那个年轻人,连他的一点痕迹都没留下,只有股刺鼻的腥臭味,像是动物尸体和硫磺混在一起。

No young man, no sign of him, except a pungent smell of animal and brimstone mixed together.

Speaker 0

地上只躺着一只鞋,别的什么都没有。

And lying on the floor was a single shoe, nothing more.

Speaker 0

这事儿后来上了报纸,越传越广,最后传到了一位著名耶稣会神父耳中——他可是个经验丰富的驱魔师。

The story reached the newspapers, and from there, it traveled far and wide until it reached the ears of a renowned Jesuit priest, an experienced exorcist.

Speaker 0

他决定亲自进那间屋子,试试能不能把里面作祟的邪物赶走。

He decided he would go to this room and attempt to expel whatever evil lurked there.

Speaker 0

人们又一次苦苦劝阻。

Again, the people pleaded.

Speaker 0

可警告还是被当成了耳旁风。

Again, the warnings were ignored.

Speaker 0

进屋之前,神父只留下一句话。

Before entering, the priest gave only one instruction.

Speaker 0

如果我在屋里出了事,要是和之前一样,那我的一只鞋会留在这儿。

If by chance something happens to me in this room, if the pattern is the same, one of my shoes will remain.

Speaker 0

不管这屋里藏着什么邪门秘密,我都会把答案写在鞋上。

And whatever happens, whatever is the secret of the evil of that room, I will write that on my shoe.

Speaker 0

要是我没了,就看看那双鞋——谜底就在那儿。

If I'm gone, look at the shoe because the answer to this puzzle will be there.

Speaker 0

他迈步走了进去。

He stepped inside.

Speaker 0

门在他身后关上了。

The door closed behind him.

Speaker 0

楼下,一家人围坐在壁炉旁,听着老式座钟滴答作响。

Downstairs, the family sat by the fire listening to the steady tick of the grandfather clock.

Speaker 0

滴。

Tick.

Speaker 0

滴。

Tick.

Speaker 0

滴。

Tick.

Speaker 0

从楼上,他们听见神父在祈祷。

From above, they heard the priest praying.

Speaker 0

一股淡淡的香火味顺着楼梯飘了下来。

They smelled the faint waft of incense drifting down the stairs.

Speaker 0

大约四点半的时候,他们看了看躺在壁炉边睡觉的狗。

At around half past four, they looked at the dog who was sleeping by the fire.

Speaker 0

他在睡梦中开始低吼起来。

And in his sleep, he had begun to growl.

Speaker 0

他们盯着他,狗背上的毛渐渐竖了起来,根根倒立。

And as they watched him, the hair on the dog's back slowly rose bristling.

Speaker 0

最后,他发出一声悠长、悲恸、撕心裂肺的嚎叫。

And finally, he let out a long, mournful, blood curdling howl.

Speaker 0

紧接着,楼上房间里传来了尖叫声。

And then from the room upstairs, they heard the scream.

Speaker 0

他们抓着灯笼、十字架、圣像、圣水,冲上楼去。

They ran upstairs clutching lanterns, crosses, crucifixes, holy water.

Speaker 0

猛地推开门,那股熟悉的刺鼻气味又扑面而来。

They threw open the door, and the same pungent smell hit them.

Speaker 0

地上只躺着一只鞋子。

And on the floor lay one single shoe.

Speaker 0

他们手抖着捡起来,翻过鞋底,上面赫然烧着两个字。

Trembling, they picked it up, and they turned it over and burned into the sole of that shoe were two words.

Speaker 0

九号鞋。

Size nine.

Speaker 0

明白了。

Okay.

Speaker 0

故事就到这儿了。

That's the end of the story.

Speaker 0

大家猜出来了吗?

Did you guess it, everyone?

Speaker 0

你们猜到没?

Did you guess it?

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 0

这笑话可够长的。

It was a long joke.

Speaker 0

其实就是个长笑话。

It was just a long joke.

Speaker 0

英文里管这种叫‘毛茸茸的狗故事’,就是啰里八嗦讲半天,最后来个特别荒唐的结尾。

That's what we call in English a shaggy dog story, a story that goes on and on and on and finally has a very ridiculous punchline at the end.

Speaker 0

所以啊,这确实是个笑话。

So, yes, it was a joke.

Speaker 0

最后一句,九码。

The last line, size nine.

Speaker 0

鞋底上写的其实就是这个。

This is what was written on the sole of the shoe.

Speaker 0

鞋底上印个尺码,这不是很正常吗?

That's just that's just what is sometimes written on the sole of a shoe, isn't it?

Speaker 0

鞋的尺寸嘛。

The size of the shoe.

Speaker 0

所以大家本来都以为,谜底会藏在鞋底上,结果不是这么回事。

So this is not the course, everyone was expecting the secret of the mystery to be written on the sole of the shoe.

Speaker 0

但其实,鞋底上写的就只是鞋码,这次是九码。

But in fact, all that was written there was just the size of the shoe, size nine in this case.

Speaker 0

对啊。

Right.

Speaker 0

所以这故事就是个傻乎乎的闹剧,不过还挺吓人,结尾又挺搞笑的。

So that's it was just a silly story, but a creepy story nonetheless with a funny ending.

Speaker 0

不知道你第一次听的时候有没有猜出来。

Wonder if you got it the first time around.

Speaker 0

这讲的其实是个房间的故事——一栋房子里有个叫‘坏房间’的屋子,据说在爱尔兰,那儿特别迷信。

So, obviously, this is just the story of a of a room, a room that's a house with a room that is called a Bad Room, apparently in Ireland, which is a very superstitious place.

Speaker 0

据戴夫·艾伦说,我不确定是不是真有这回事,但真有些房子会特意留个‘坏房间’。

According to Dave Allen, I mean, it's I don't know if it's true or not, but some houses will have a bad room.

Speaker 0

这个房间特别古怪吓人,因为它有种神秘的吸引力。

And this room was very strange and creepy because it had a a mysterious attraction.

Speaker 0

它会把人往里吸。

It attracted people in.

Speaker 0

你要是推开门往里看,就会忍不住想走进去。

If you opened the door and looked inside the room, you would feel this urge to go inside.

Speaker 0

就像被一股磁力吸进去一样,根本停不住。

It was it's like it was pulling you in or like a magnet being pulled into the room.

Speaker 0

但你要是真进去了,唉,那屋里估计有股邪气,说不清是什么东西。

But if you go in there well, basically, it it it was a I guess there was some sort of evil presence in that room.

Speaker 0

凡来这房子的人,都被警告过:绝对不能进那个房间。

And anyone who visited the the house was warned never to go in the room.

Speaker 0

万一非得进去,也得拉上个人陪着,让那人站在你身后死死拽住你,免得你被吸进去,或者自己主动往里冲。

And if they did need to go and visit it, that they should go with someone else so that that other person could stand behind them and hold on to them so that they don't get pulled into the room or that they don't voluntarily enter the room.

Speaker 0

可偏偏有个愣头青,非说这都是瞎扯,非要睡一晚证明给大家看,结果真进去了。

But then one young man, a foolish young man, who wanted to prove that it was a load of nonsense decided he would spend the night in the room and he went in.

Speaker 0

半夜里,房间里突然传来一声惨叫,大家全冲上楼去看,可屋里空空如也。

And in the middle of the night, there was a scream from the room and everyone rushed upstairs to look inside, and there was nothing there.

Speaker 0

那小伙子不见了,只剩下一双鞋留在那儿。

This young man had disappeared except for his shoe.

Speaker 0

地上只留下了他的那只鞋。

Just his shoe was left on the floor.

Speaker 0

后来一位耶稣会神父,天主教的驱魔师,专门对付邪灵的那种人,听说了这事。

So this priest learned about this, a Jesuit priest, a Catholic priest, an exorcist, someone who is specialized in getting rid of evil spirits.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

他决定亲自去那间屋子过夜。

He decided he would go there.

Speaker 0

他要在那房间里待一整晚。

He would spend the night in the room.

Speaker 0

因为他是个老练的驱魔师,有经验、有本事,能把屋里那股邪气彻底清除。

And since he was an experienced exorcist, he would have the kind of, the knowledge, the skills to be able to get rid of the evil spirit that lurked in the room.

Speaker 0

可你和大伙儿都拦他,说不行。

And just before you and everyone said, no.

Speaker 0

你绝对不能去。

You mustn't do it.

Speaker 0

大伙儿都劝他别去,可他根本不听,非要去。

Everyone, you know, tried to persuade him not to, but he refused to listen and did it anyway.

Speaker 0

他进房间前,突然说:听着。

And he and just before he went in the room, he said, listen.

Speaker 0

如果同样的事再发生,我的一只鞋就会留在这个房间的地上。

If the same pattern happens, then one of my shoes will be left on the floor of this room.

Speaker 0

要是真这样,我就把秘密写在鞋上。

And if that happens, I will write the secret on the shoe.

Speaker 0

明白吗?

Right?

Speaker 0

要是我出事了,就去找那只鞋,看看上面写了啥。

If I'm gone, look for the shoe and look at what's written there.

Speaker 0

当然了,半夜里他突然尖叫起来。

And, of course, he screams in the middle of the night.

Speaker 0

吓死人了。

It's very frightening.

Speaker 0

他尖叫起来。

He screams.

Speaker 0

他们进房间的时候,他已经不见了。

He dis they enter the room.

Speaker 0

人没了。

He's gone.

Speaker 0

他的鞋扔在地上。

His shoe is on the floor.

Speaker 0

他们把鞋捡了起来。

They pick it up.

Speaker 0

秘密到底是什么?

What is the secret?

Speaker 0

可鞋底上写的到底是什么?

But what's written on the sole of the shoe?

Speaker 0

九码。

Size nine.

Speaker 0

就只是鞋底上写的鞋码,大多数鞋都有这个。

Just the size of the shoe, which is written on most shoes.

Speaker 0

大多数鞋的鞋底都会印着尺码。

Most shoes have the size written on the sole.

Speaker 0

所以呢,就是一个小小的玩笑,但挺有意思的。

So just a silly joke, but a fun one.

Speaker 0

我来一句一句给你讲这个故事,顺便教教你里面的一些词汇。

Let me go through the story line by line, and I'm going to just teach you bits of vocab from it.

Speaker 0

明白吗?

Okay?

Speaker 0

你也可以跟着我重复每句话,这可是练习英语的好方法。

You could also practice by repeating the lines of the story after me, which is always a good idea, a good way to just exercise exercise your English.

Speaker 0

《糟糕的房间》。

So The Bad Room.

Speaker 0

如果可以的话,我想跟你讲个真实的故事。

If I may, I'd like to tell you a true story.

Speaker 0

一个关于房子的故事。

A story about a house.

Speaker 0

对了,各位听众,如果想跟着我重复这些句子,随时可以暂停播客。

So by the way, listeners, you could always pause the podcast if you want to repeat these lines after me.

Speaker 0

明白吗?

Okay?

Speaker 0

这样对你来说会更轻松。

That would make it easier for you.

Speaker 0

一个关于房子的故事。

A story about a house.

Speaker 0

这房子有个在爱尔兰人眼里叫‘凶屋’的房间。

A house that had what people in Ireland call a bad room.

Speaker 0

那个房间有种让人不舒服的沉重氛围。

This room had an atmosphere, an unwelcoming heavy presence.

Speaker 0

到目前为止,我还没挑出故事里的词汇来教你们。

I haven't really picked out any vocab yet in the story to teach you.

Speaker 0

我的意思是,‘存在’就是说有什么东西在那里。

I mean, a presence, that means that something is there.

Speaker 0

确实有种存在感。

There is a presence.

Speaker 0

你有没有发现,‘presence’这个词,指的是有人或有东西在场,发音居然和表示礼物的‘present’的复数形式一模一样。

I suppose it's interesting to notice that presence, p r e s e n c e, a presence when someone or something is is there, when it is present, sounds exactly like the plural of present meaning gift.

Speaker 0

一个present,两个presents。

So one present, two presents.

Speaker 0

房间里有一种奇怪的、沉重又令人不自在的存在感。

And there was a strange presence, a heavy, unwelcoming presence in the room.

Speaker 0

这两个词听起来真的完全一样。

Those two words do sound the same.

Speaker 0

大家都不太敢进那个房间。

People were reluctant to go into it.

Speaker 0

对啊。

Right.

Speaker 0

如果你不愿意做某事,那就是说你有点抵触,犹豫不决,其实并不想做。

Now if you are reluctant to do something, it means you're kind of unwilling to do it, you're hesitant to do it, you don't really want to do it.

Speaker 0

明白吧?

Okay?

Speaker 0

比如说,我半夜听见一声怪响。

For example, you know, I heard a strange noise in the middle of the night.

Speaker 0

我听见客房里有奇怪的声音,本来想过去看看,但就是不敢开门。

I heard a strange noise coming from the spare bedroom, And I wanted to investigate, but I was reluctant to open the door.

Speaker 0

我的意思是,唉,我真的不想去。

I mean, oh, I don't really want to.

Speaker 0

所以,如果你不愿意做某事,那就是你压根不想做。

So if you're reluctant to do something, it means you don't really want to do it.

Speaker 0

我也不太确定。

I don't know.

Speaker 0

比如你在课堂上,或者去参加个派对,大家都英语说得特别溜,你觉得自己不行,可能就不想开口,根本提不起劲儿说。

For example, if you are in a classroom situation or you you go to a party and everyone's speaking English really fluently and you don't feel very confident, you might be reluctant to speak, meaning you don't really feel like speaking.

Speaker 0

你觉得自己没把握开口。

You don't feel confident enough to speak.

Speaker 0

你不太想开口。

You're reluctant to speak.

Speaker 0

我不太想去参加派对,因为我知道一整晚都得说英语。

I was reluctant to go to the party because I knew that I would have to speak English the whole time.

Speaker 0

一开始我确实有点犹豫,但还是去了,结果真挺对的——交到了朋友,英语也练了不少。

And so I I felt a bit reluctant at first, but then I did it anyway, and it turned out to be a really good idea because I made some friends and practiced my English a lot.

Speaker 0

如果你不太想做某事,也可以说‘不太愿意承认’。

So if you're reluctant to do something you might say reluctant to admit.

Speaker 0

我不太愿意承认自己错了。

I was reluctant to admit that I was wrong.

Speaker 0

我和我老婆吵架,你知道的,就在那儿争来争去。

I was having an argument with my wife, and, you know, we were arguing.

Speaker 0

她比我能说,还证明了我可能有地方说错了,可我就是不想承认。

And she argued better than me, and she proved that perhaps I was wrong about something, but I was reluctant to admit it.

Speaker 0

我其实不太想承认。

I didn't really want to admit it.

Speaker 0

我不太愿意开口。

I was reluctant to speak.

Speaker 0

你可以说‘非常不愿意’做某事。

You might say deeply reluctant to do something.

Speaker 0

这个词挺好的。

That's a nice word.

Speaker 0

咱们继续吧。

Let's move on.

Speaker 0

当时大家都不太愿意进这个房间。

So people were reluctant to go into this room.

Speaker 0

根本不想进去。

Don't really wanna go in.

Speaker 0

他们都躲着不去。

They avoided it.

Speaker 0

所以避免某事,就是尽量不去做它。

So to avoid something is to try not to do it.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

就是想办法躲开它。

Try to go away from it.

Speaker 0

比如说,半夜一个人在一座阴森的老房子里,你肯定不敢照镜子,会刻意避开照镜子。

Like, for example, if you are in a creepy old house in the middle of the night on your own, you would be reluctant to look in the mirror or you you would avoid looking in the mirror.

Speaker 0

我们常这么说:避开眼神接触、躲麻烦、别做某事。

We often say things like avoid eye contact, avoid trouble, avoid doing something.

Speaker 0

后面通常跟动名词。

It's often followed by a gerund.

Speaker 0

他们躲开了。

They avoided it.

Speaker 0

他们不敢进去。

They avoided going in there.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

他们压低声音谈论这件事。

They spoke about it in lowered voices.

Speaker 0

压低声音。

Lowered voices.

Speaker 0

压低声音就是说得轻一点。

To lower your voice means to speak more quietly.

Speaker 0

轻声说话。

Speak quietly.

Speaker 0

把声音放低一点。

Lower your voice.

Speaker 0

就像耳语,或者只是不那么大声地说话。

So it's like to whisper or just to speak less loudly.

Speaker 0

把声音放低一点。

Lower your voice.

Speaker 0

他们说话时压低了声音。

They spoke about it in lowered voices.

Speaker 0

所以他们是那种悄悄地、小声地聊这件事。

So they kind of spoke about it a bit like this or spoke about it quietly.

Speaker 0

他们把声音放轻了。

They lowered their voice.

Speaker 0

他们说话时压低了声音。

They spoke about it in lowered voices.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

而且坚决不掺和这事。

And refused to have anything to do with it.

Speaker 0

所以‘拒绝做某事’,这也是个好表达。

So to refuse to do something, that's another good one.

Speaker 0

所以我们已经学了:不愿意做、避开做、还有拒绝做。

So we've had to be reluctant to do something, to avoid doing something, and refuse to do something.

Speaker 0

如果你拒绝做某事,其实就是直接说不。

If you refuse to do something, you just basically say no.

Speaker 0

就是说,你不同意去做这件事。

You know, you you don't agree to do it.

Speaker 0

不行。

No.

Speaker 0

我不会做那事的。

I will not do that.

Speaker 0

我不会进那个房间。

I'm not going in that room.

Speaker 0

想都别想。

No way.

Speaker 0

别找我。

Not me.

Speaker 0

绝无可能。

Not a chance.

Speaker 0

我坚决不去那儿。

I'm I've absolutely refused to go in there.

Speaker 0

在这种情况下,他们根本不想沾边。

In this case, they had they refused to have anything anything to do with it.

Speaker 0

所以如果你和某事有关系,这说法挺地道的,意思是跟你有牵连。

So if you have something to do with something, this is quite a nice expression, it means you are connected to something.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

所以呢,你可能会说,这跟我一点关系都没有。

So I am you know, you might say, oh, it's it's nothing to do with me.

Speaker 0

这跟我一点关系都没有。

It has nothing to do with me.

Speaker 0

那谁打碎了这个玻璃?

So who broke this who broke this glass?

Speaker 0

桌上有个打碎的玻璃杯。

There's a broken glass on the table.

Speaker 0

这跟我一点关系都没有。

It's it has nothing to do with me.

Speaker 0

这跟我一点关系都没有,意思是跟我完全没瓜葛。

That has nothing to do with me, meaning there's no connection to me at all.

Speaker 0

所以这跟我一点关系都没有。

So it has nothing to do with me.

Speaker 0

这跟我一点关系都没有。

It doesn't have anything to do with me.

Speaker 0

这跟你有关系吗?

Does this have something to do with you?

Speaker 0

反正这跟我一点关系都没有。

Well, it doesn't have anything to do with me.

Speaker 0

所以是有关联的。

So a connection.

Speaker 0

在这种情况下,他们坚决不沾边,意思就是不想跟这事有任何牵扯。

In this case, they refused to have anything to do with it, meaning that they did not want to have any dealings with it, no connection with it at all.

Speaker 0

他们一点都不想沾上这事儿。

They didn't want to be involved with it in any way.

Speaker 0

明白吗?

Okay?

Speaker 0

所以他们是坚决不碰这事儿。

They so they refused to have anything to do with it.

Speaker 0

压根儿不敢靠近。

Didn't go anywhere near it.

Speaker 0

一点关系都不想有。

Nothing at all.

Speaker 0

躲得远远的。

Avoided it completely.

Speaker 0

要是有访客听说了那个房间,想进去看看,住那儿的人总会提醒他们:千万别靠近那房间。

If visitors heard about the room and asked to see it, the people who lived there would always warn them, please do not go near the room.

Speaker 0

如果非得靠近,也一定要有人陪着,千万别一个人去——那房间有种诡异的吸引力。

And if you must go near it, go with someone else, never alone, Because that room had an attraction.

Speaker 0

一种诡异的致命吸引力

A strange fatal attraction.

Speaker 0

致命吸引力

Fatal attraction.

Speaker 0

致命的

Fatal.

Speaker 0

这个词用得挺妙的

It's a nice adjective.

Speaker 0

意思是说,要是某事是致命的,那它可能会让人丧命,或者引发灾难,八成是死人那种

It means if something is fatal, it can cause death or cause some kind of disaster, probably death.

Speaker 0

致命的错误、致命的事故、导致人死的失误、造成死亡的意外、致命伤、致命后果

A fatal mistake, a fatal accident, a mistake that led to someone's death, an accident that caused death, a fatal accident, fatal error, fatal injury, a fatal consequence.

Speaker 0

这里说的,就是这种致命的吸引力

In this case, a fatal attraction.

Speaker 0

不是有部电影就叫《致命吸引力》吗?

There's a movie called fatal attraction, isn't there?

Speaker 0

有种东西像磁铁一样把人吸进去。

Something that drew people inward like a magnet.

Speaker 0

这里的‘draw’是个动词。

So to draw is the verb here.

Speaker 0

比如说,把人吸引进房间。

In this case, draw people into the room.

Speaker 0

draw 的过去式是 drew,过去分词是 drawn。

Draw drew drawn.

Speaker 0

‘draw in’ 就是把什么东西拉进来、吸引过来的意思。

To draw in means to pull or attract something in.

Speaker 0

明白吗?

Okay?

Speaker 0

我有次走在街上,看见一家挺有感觉的小酒馆,莫名其妙就被吸引进去了——就是那种感觉,心想:哎,进去坐坐吧。

Like, I walked I was walking down the road, and I saw a lovely looking pub, and it just it drew me in, meaning I felt like, oh, I think I want to go into that pub.

Speaker 0

它把我给吸进去了。

It drew me in.

Speaker 0

这次是把人吸引进来。

In this case, drew people inward.

Speaker 0

‘Inward’ 就是说朝中间、朝里面的方向。

Inward basically means towards the middle or towards the inside.

Speaker 0

明白吧?

Okay?

Speaker 0

比如,门是向内开的。

For example, the door the door opened inward.

Speaker 0

门是向内又向外开的。

The the door opened inward and outwards.

Speaker 0

就是‘inward’或者‘inwards’。

Inwards or inward.

Speaker 0

有时候后面会加个 s。

So sometimes it has an s on it.

Speaker 0

其实意思是一样的。

It's the same thing.

Speaker 0

往里或往内,往外或向外,都一样。

Inward or inwards, outward or outwards.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

所以门是往里开的,或者往外开的。

So the door opened inward or the door opened outward.

Speaker 0

明白了吧?

You see?

Speaker 0

就像磁铁,我们都懂磁铁是什么东西。

Like a magnet we know what a magnet is.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

它能吸住金属。

It's a thing that attracts metal.

Speaker 0

你可以用磁铁把东西吸在冰箱上,就是那种金属门的冰箱。

You can use a magnet to attach something to your fridge, you know, your your the fridge that has a sort of metal door.

Speaker 0

用磁铁就能把东西吸在冰箱上。

You can you can stick things to the fridge with magnets.

Speaker 0

所以磁铁啊,就是有磁性的。

So like a magnet, it means it's magnetic.

Speaker 0

它会把东西吸过来。

It sort of pulls or attracts something to it.

Speaker 0

除了实物,人也可以有磁性,比如磁性人格。

A magnetic a magnetic thing you can also have a magnetic personality.

Speaker 0

要是你有磁性人格,别人就会不自觉地被你吸引。

If you have a magnetic personality, it means that you attract people to you.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

这词不光能形容金属,任何能吸引别人靠近的东西,都可以叫有磁性,像磁铁一样。

So it's not just used for for metal, but anything that is attracts other things towards it could be magnetic or like a magnet.

Speaker 0

那些胆大或鲁莽到敢开门的人,可以往里看,但绝不能跨过门槛。

Those brave or foolish enough to open the door would be allowed to look inside, but never to step across the threshold.

Speaker 0

‘门槛’这个词,最近几期播客里好几次都提到过,我觉得。

A threshold, this is a word that's come up several times on the podcast in recent episodes, I feel.

Speaker 0

门槛,说白了就是入口的那条线。

The threshold is basically the entrance line.

Speaker 0

就是入口的那条线。

The entrance line.

Speaker 0

比如在房间里,我们有房间和建筑的门槛,其他情况下也有门槛。

So in terms of a room so we have thresholds in rooms and buildings, and then we have thresholds in other situations.

Speaker 0

在建筑里,门槛就是把‘里面’和‘外面’隔开的那条线。

But in a building, a threshold would just be the line that separates that room to not in the room.

Speaker 0

你跨过门槛,意思就是走进房间或者走进建筑。

So you step across the threshold means you enter the room or enter the building.

Speaker 0

明白吗?

Okay?

Speaker 0

站在门槛上,就是站在两个空间之间的分界线上。

To stand on the threshold means stand on the line just in the entrance to something between two things.

Speaker 0

跨过这个门槛,就意味着你站在了一个新时代的入口。

To cross the threshold so you can stand on the threshold of a new era.

Speaker 0

意思是,你正好站在踏入新时代的边缘。

That means you're right on the edge of entering a new era.

Speaker 0

这不只是走进一个房间,而是你人生进入了一个新阶段。

So not just a room, but a new phase in your life.

Speaker 0

你正站在一项新发现的门槛上。

You're on the on the threshold of a new discovery.

Speaker 0

再比如税收,税务体系里也常有各种门槛。

Also, in terms of tax taxation, often taxation systems, they have different thresholds.

Speaker 0

比如说,你年收入低于三万英镑,就属于这个税档。

For example, if you earn less than, you know, less than £30,000 a year, you will you will be in this tax band.

Speaker 0

但一旦你年收入超过三万英镑,你就跨过门槛了。

But when you start to earn more than £30,000 a year, you cross a threshold.

Speaker 0

这个门槛的设定就是三万英镑。

The threshold is set at £30,000.

Speaker 0

你跨过这个门槛,就进入另一个税率区间,要交更多的税了。

You cross that threshold into another tax band where you pay more tax.

Speaker 0

这些线就是门槛,把不同的税率区间隔开,赚得越多,税率越高。

So these lines are thresholds that divide different tax bands where you pay more tax, the more you earn.

Speaker 0

门槛嘛,就像一堵墙,分隔房间和房间,或者建筑内外;你跨过门槛就进去了,但同样,人生的新开端、新阶段,还有咱们说的税率区间,也都是靠门槛来划分的。

So a threshold, a line, dividing one room from another or a a line, dividing, like, the outside of a building to the inside of a building, you cross the threshold into a building, but also lines that divide other things like the the starting point of a new era, a new phase, or in this case, tax bands, are divided by thresholds.

Speaker 0

这个词不光用在描述房子房间,金融、财税这些领域也经常用。

So it's it's used in things like financial English and stuff like that, not just describing buildings and rooms.

Speaker 0

而且每次,他们的随从都会站在身后,随时准备拉住他们。

And always, their companion would stand behind them ready to hold them back.

Speaker 0

这里说的‘拉住’,是字面意思。

So to hold someone back, in this case, it's literal.

Speaker 0

就是阻止人往前走。

It means prevent someone from moving forwards.

Speaker 0

就是用手实实在在地拽住,不让他们迈进房间。

Literally, hold with the hands to stop them going into the room.

Speaker 0

就是拦着他们别往前走。

Like, hold them back.

Speaker 0

不过这个说法挺实用的,因为它既可以用在字面意思,也能用在比喻意义上。

But it's also a useful phrase to know, because it's used in a literal in in a figurative sense as well.

Speaker 0

要是有什么东西拖你后腿,那就是在阻止你进步。

If something holds you back, it prevents you from making progress.

Speaker 0

比如说,你可以说:‘唉,我自信不足,真拖慢了我学英语的进度。’

For example, you could say, you know, my lack of confidence is really holding me back, in my English.

Speaker 0

你懂的吧?

You know?

Speaker 0

我就是感觉,自己学英语没啥进展。

What is it that's I don't feel like I'm making progress with my English.

Speaker 0

那你觉得是什么在拖你后腿呢?

Well, what is it that's holding you back?

Speaker 0

嗯,就是吧,我没什么靠谱的作息安排。

Well, it's, you know, it's like my I haven't got a good routine.

展开剩余字幕(还有 480 条)
Speaker 0

我还没建立起一个靠谱的学习习惯。

I haven't established a good study routine.

Speaker 0

我觉得这才是真正拖我后腿的原因。

I think that's really holding me back.

Speaker 0

再就是我没个人天天练口语,这也让我进步不了。

Or the fact that I don't have someone to speak to on a daily basis, that's really holding me back.

Speaker 0

还有就是我自信不足,老觉得自己不行。

Or my confidence issues, I just don't feel very confident.

Speaker 0

所以干脆就不张嘴了。

And as a result, I don't open my mouth.

Speaker 0

说话老是犹豫,这真把我给拖住了。

I'm sort of reluctant to speak, and this is really holding me back.

Speaker 0

你明白吧?

You see?

Speaker 0

对吧。

Right.

Speaker 0

我们继续。

Moving on.

Speaker 0

门一打开,水就深了。

Once the door opened, the pool deepened.

Speaker 0

我想说的是,这里用‘once’其实只是用来串时间顺序的,对吧?

Now I just wanted to point out here that the use of the word, like, once here, And this is just a way to sequence things, isn't it?

Speaker 0

你看,门一开,水就变深了。

We've got once the door opened, the pool deepened.

Speaker 0

所以是‘once’加过去式,再跟另一个过去式,纯粹就是表示先后顺序。

So once and then past simple and then another past simple form, and it's just used to sequence things.

Speaker 0

它就是说明一件事接着另一件事发生。

So it just shows that one action follows another.

Speaker 0

那除了‘once’,还能用啥词代替呢?

Now what else could you use there instead of once?

Speaker 0

其实可以用好几个别的词或短语来代替‘once’。

You could use several other words or phrases instead of once.

Speaker 0

你可以说‘门一开,池子就变深了’,或者‘门刚一开,池子就变深了’。

You could say when the door opened, the pool deepened, or as soon as the door opened, the pool deepened.

Speaker 0

我觉得‘once’和‘as soon as’其实特别像,都表示‘立刻’的意思。

I think once and as soon as are really very similar because they mean sort of immediately.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

就是一……就。

Immediately when.

Speaker 0

门一开,池子就变深了。

When the door opened, the pool deepened.

Speaker 0

就在那一刻,池子变深了。

It was at that moment that the pool deepened.

Speaker 0

用‘once’或者‘as soon as’是为了强调,事情是马上发生的。

Using once or as soon as emphasizes that it's straight away.

Speaker 0

变深了,池子变深了。

And deepened, the pool deepened.

Speaker 0

这里‘deepened’的意思是变得更强烈、更浓厚,或者更严重。

In this case, deepened means to become stronger, more intense, or more serious.

Speaker 0

明白吗?

Okay?

Speaker 0

比如,沉默变得更深了。

For example, the silence deepened.

Speaker 0

故事也变得更扣人心弦了。

The story deepened.

Speaker 0

我的恐惧也越来越深了。

My fear deepened.

Speaker 0

关系也可以加深。

You can deepen a relationship.

Speaker 0

谜团也能变得更扑朔迷离。

You can deepen a mystery.

Speaker 0

就是变得更深、更强、更强烈、更严重。

Becomes deeper, stronger, more intense, more serious.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

在这种情况下,那个阴森房间的吸引力越来越强了。

In this case, the pull, the attraction of this creepy room deepened.

Speaker 0

变得更强了,更强烈了。

It became stronger, became more intense.

Speaker 0

人们都忍不住想进去。

People wanted to go in.

Speaker 0

结果不得不被人拦住。

They had to be stopped.

Speaker 0

这里被动语态用在不定式里,用得真妙。

Just nice use of the passive form in an infinitive.

Speaker 0

‘had to be stopped’ 就是说别人得去拦住他们。

Had to be stopped, meaning other people had to stop them.

Speaker 0

有个傻小子,傻乎乎的,蠢得要命,不聪明也不明智,还固执得非要证明大家都错了,把所有警告全当耳旁风。

One foolish young man, foolish, stupid, not clever, not wise, stubborn and determined to prove everyone wrong, ignored all the all the warnings.

Speaker 0

固执得不行

So stubborn.

Speaker 0

你要是固执,就是不太愿意改变主意

If you are stubborn, it means you are sort of not willing to change your mind.

Speaker 0

这小伙子打定主意了,我就要进那房间,还非得在里面过夜,我才不信这些迷信玩意儿呢

So this young man has decided, I'm gonna go in that room, and I'm gonna spend the night there because I don't believe all this superstitious nonsense.

Speaker 0

他固执到就算所有人都劝他,也不听

And he's so stubborn that even if everyone is trying to convince him, no.

Speaker 0

不行

No.

Speaker 0

绝对不行

No.

Speaker 0

就是不行

No.

Speaker 0

别去啊

Please don't do it.

Speaker 0

不行。

No.

Speaker 0

相信我们吧。

Trust us.

Speaker 0

你真不该这么做。

You really shouldn't do that.

Speaker 0

可我就是要做。

Well, I'm gonna do it anyway.

Speaker 0

我决定了要做,那就非做不可。

I've decided I'm gonna do it, so I'm gonna do it.

Speaker 0

谁也说不动我改变主意。

No one's gonna persuade me otherwise.

Speaker 0

真是固执,死活不肯改主意。

So very stubborn, someone who's unwilling to change their mind.

Speaker 0

他铁了心要让大家看看自己是对的。

He was determined to prove everyone wrong.

Speaker 0

你要是让所有人都大吃一惊,那就是用行动告诉他们,他们想错了。

If you prove everyone wrong, it means you show them that they are wrong.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

错。

Wrong.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 0

你就是用事实打脸,让他们知道自己错了。

You show people that they're wrong.

Speaker 0

你用行动证明他们确实错了。

You prove that they're wrong.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

好吧

Okay.

Speaker 0

人们求他、骂他、冲他大喊、跟他打架,所以你知道,大喊和打架我都说了,但那个‘求’呢?他们就是说:‘求求你,别进那个房间,求求你’,对,就是这个‘求’字,对应的动词是 plead,p-l-e-a-d。

People pleaded with him, scolded him, shouted at him, fought with him so I think you know shouted at him and fought with him but what about pleaded with him so they pleaded they were like please please please don't go in that room please so please you know the word, but the verb form for this is to plead, p l e a d.

Speaker 0

过去式是 pleaded。

Past simple pleaded.

Speaker 0

他们求过他。

They pleaded with him.

Speaker 0

他们恳求他。

Please they begged him.

Speaker 0

这跟 beg 意思差不多。

It's similar to beg.

Speaker 0

别进那个房间。

Don't go in that room.

Speaker 0

求你了,别去。

Please don't go.

Speaker 0

相信我们。

Trust us.

Speaker 0

你绝对不能进那个房间。

You really mustn't go in that room.

Speaker 0

哦,这完全是胡说八道。

Oh, it's a load of old nonsense.

Speaker 0

他们责备了他。

They scolded him.

Speaker 0

如果你责备某人,就是用很生气的语气跟对方说话。

If you scold someone, it means you speak very angrily with someone.

Speaker 0

其实就是训他一顿。

You kind of tell them off.

Speaker 0

别人做错事了,你就很生气地跟他讲。

Someone has done something wrong and you kind of speak very angrily with them.

Speaker 0

比如我两岁的儿子,要是把水洒得满地都是,我和他妈妈就会训他一顿。

For example, if my little son who is two years old, if he does something like he throws water all over the floor, he might get scolded by me or by his mom.

Speaker 0

你懂的吧。

You know?

Speaker 0

我们也不会太凶,就是跟他说:别这么干。

We we not too much, but we'd say, you mustn't do that.

Speaker 0

别把水泼地上。

Don't throw water on the floor.

Speaker 0

所以我们还是训了他。

So we scolded him.

Speaker 0

‘训人’就是同义词。

To tell someone off is a synonym.

Speaker 0

就是‘训一顿’。

Tell off.

Speaker 0

这算是个短语动词的同义表达。

That's a phrasal verb synonym.

Speaker 0

‘责备’听起来比‘训斥’更正式一点。

Scold is a bit more formal sounding than tell off.

Speaker 0

但在这段故事里,你可以想象,没错,人们就是用很凶的话对他说话,甚至冲他大喊大叫。

But you in this story, you can imagine, yes, that that people just sort of spoke angrily with him in strong words, kinda shouted at him.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

他们训斥了他。

They scolded him.

Speaker 0

他们恳求他。

They pleaded with him.

Speaker 0

他们冲他大喊。

They shouted at him.

Speaker 0

他们和他吵了一架。

They fought with him.

Speaker 0

注意一下这些介词。

Notice the prepositions.

Speaker 0

向某人恳求。

Plead with someone.

Speaker 0

训斥某人,或者数落某人。

Scold someone or tell someone off.

Speaker 0

对某人大喊大叫。

Shout at someone.

Speaker 0

和某人吵架。

Fight with someone.

Speaker 0

他说:不行。

And he said, no.

Speaker 0

我就要在那个房间过夜。

I will spend the night in that room.

Speaker 0

这里用‘will’特别有意思,就是表明自己打定主意了,谁也改不了。

Interesting use of will just to, you know, show your intention, which can't be changed.

Speaker 0

这表达的意图非常坚决。

It's very strong intention.

Speaker 0

我就是要在这间房里过夜,彻底扫清这些迷信的胡说八道。

I will spend the night in that room and rid us all of this superstitious nonsense.

Speaker 0

‘rid someone of something’ 就是清除掉某样东西的意思。

To rid someone of something, meaning to get rid of something.

Speaker 0

所以‘rid us of this nonsense’这种说法有点老派,带点正式感。

So to rid us of this nonsense, to rid someone of something, it's slightly old fashioned language.

Speaker 0

它语气比较正式,比如你要清除掉什么?举个例子……

It has a slightly formal tone, and it means if you rid I don't know what what's a good example of this.

Speaker 0

比如说,这房子有老鼠。

Let's say the the house has got mice in it.

Speaker 0

屋里有老鼠。

There are mice.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

一只老鼠,两只老鼠。

One mouse, two mice.

Speaker 0

屋里有老鼠,所以你会请专业人士来把老鼠全赶走。

There are mice in the house, and so you might call a professional to come in and rid the house of mice, meaning, remove all the mice.

Speaker 0

这个年轻人想把我们所有人从这些迷信的胡说八道里解放出来。

In this case, this young man wants to rid the, rid us all of this superstitious nonsense.

Speaker 0

他想彻底清除这些迷信想法,让大家别再这么荒唐地瞎想。

He wants to remove this superstitious nonsense from everyone so that everyone stops thinking in this ridiculous, superstitious way.

Speaker 0

‘rid us of something’就是把那东西彻底清干净、扔掉。

To rid us of something means remove it all and throw it away.

Speaker 0

平时更常说的其实是‘get rid of’,意思就是扔掉、清理掉。

A more everyday common expression is to get rid of something, and that means, yeah, throw throw it away, remove it.

Speaker 0

你瞧,房间角落里堆了这么多垃圾。

There's look at all this rubbish in the corner of the room.

Speaker 0

你能把这些垃圾处理掉吗?

Could you get rid of it, please?

Speaker 0

这更贴近日常说法,就是把东西清掉、扔了。

That's a much more everyday expression, meaning to remove something and throw it away.

Speaker 0

把它扔了吧。

Get rid of it.

Speaker 0

我真的不知道。

I don't no.

Speaker 0

这东西不该在这儿。

This shouldn't be here.

Speaker 0

你能帮个忙,把它处理掉吗?

I'd like you to get rid of it, please.

Speaker 0

咱们把这堆破烂全清了。

Let's get rid of all this rubbish.

Speaker 0

破烂。

Rubbish.

Speaker 0

把这堆破烂都给我们清干净。

Rid us all of this rubbish.

Speaker 0

听起来太老派了,特别正式。

Sounds very old fashioned, quite formal.

Speaker 0

在故事的语境里,这么用刚好,显得特别庄重,正适合这个阴森森的故事。

In the in the context of the story, it works because it sounds quite sort of serious, and it's this the right kind of tone for this creepy story.

Speaker 0

我今晚就睡在那间屋子里,把这堆迷信胡话彻底清干净。

I will spend the night in that room and rid us all of this superstitious nonsense.

Speaker 0

就是那种……挺正式的语气,在故事里听着特别有分量。

It's the kind of, yeah, a formal sort of tone that sounds very serious in the context of the story.

Speaker 0

平时说话,咱们直接说‘扔了’就行。

In more everyday English, you might just say, get rid of it.

Speaker 0

你能把这些东西都清掉吗?

Can you get rid of all this stuff, please?

Speaker 0

这东西不该在这儿。

This shouldn't be here.

Speaker 0

他跨进那间屋子,门在他身后,没碰任何人,缓缓关上了。

He stepped inside that room, and the door without a single human touch closed slowly behind him.

Speaker 0

这时候我就该亮亮我的音效了。

And this is where I get the chance to show off my sound effects.

Speaker 0

所有人都屏住了呼吸。

And they all waited.

Speaker 0

他们一直等到早上六点。

They waited until about 06:00 in the morning.

Speaker 0

那间屋子里突然传出一声尖叫——那是一种让人魂飞魄散、血液凝固的惨叫。

And from that room came a scream, a horrendous soul destroying blood freezing scream.

Speaker 0

这词用得真棒。

Nice language.

Speaker 0

吓死人了。

Horrendous.

Speaker 0

‘吓死人了’就是特别糟糕、特别骇人、特别恐怖的意思。

Horrendous means extremely bad, shocking, horrible, awful, terrible.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

那声尖叫太吓人了。

Horrendous scream.

Speaker 0

你能想象吧。

You can imagine.

Speaker 0

天哪。

God.

Speaker 0

那到底是什么?

What was that?

Speaker 0

那真的太可怕了。

That was horrendous.

Speaker 0

就是特别、特别糟。

Just very, very bad.

Speaker 0

比‘可怕’还厉害。

Stronger than horrible.

Speaker 0

那真的太吓人了。

That was horrible.

Speaker 0

那简直太可怕了。

That was horrendous.

Speaker 0

那简直吓死人了。

That was horrific.

Speaker 0

可怕、吓人、恐怖、糟透了。

Horrible, horrendous, horrific, awful.

Speaker 0

这些词意思都差不多。

These are all very similar.

Speaker 0

‘吓人’这个词程度更重一点。

Horrendous is a bit stronger.

Speaker 0

我们还有‘terrific’这个词,但要注意,它可不属于这一类。

We also have the word terrific, but watch out because terrific is not part of that group.

Speaker 0

‘terrific’是褒义词。

Terrific is a positive word.

Speaker 0

卢克,那集真是棒极了。

That was a terrific episode, Luke.

Speaker 0

那简直太棒了。

That was absolutely terrific.

Speaker 0

可不是吓人。

Not terrifying.

Speaker 0

吓人、糟糕、惨不忍睹、震惊、差劲儿,这些词全都是说特别差的。

So terrifying, horrible, horrendous, shocking, awful, all of those things are really bad.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

尤其是‘吓人’,意思是特别恐怖。

Terrifying especially means very frightening.

Speaker 0

‘惨不忍睹’就是说特别糟糕。

Horrendous means awful, extremely bad.

Speaker 0

糟糕透顶。

Terrible.

Speaker 0

但‘棒极了’就不一样。

But terrific.

Speaker 0

terrific 是褒义词。

Terrific is positive.

Speaker 0

哦,这味道真棒。

Oh, this tastes terrific.

Speaker 0

这太棒了。

This is terrific.

Speaker 0

那部电影简直太棒了。

That was a terrific film.

Speaker 0

这个故事讲得真好,卢克。

That was a terrific story, Luke.

Speaker 0

干得漂亮。

Well done.

Speaker 0

明白了。

Okay.

Speaker 0

所以,这事儿很棒,但那事儿太糟了。

So that's terrific, and horrendous.

Speaker 0

那是一种能把灵魂撕碎的尖叫声,彻底摧毁你的灵魂。

So a horrendous soul destroying scream, a scream that destroys your soul.

Speaker 0

一种能让你血液凝固的尖叫声,冷得你浑身发抖。

Blood freezing scream, it freezes your blood.

Speaker 0

他们全都冲到房间门口,猛地撞开门冲了进去。

They all rushed up to the room and burst through the door.

Speaker 0

‘burst’就是猛冲进去的意思,比如撞开大门、一下子冲进屋子里。

So to burst, burst in, burst through the door, it means enter the room suddenly and violently.

Speaker 0

门一打开,他们就冲进了房间。

Quickly open the door, and they burst in the room.

Speaker 0

比如说,警察冲进房间,把银行劫匪当场抓获。

Like, I don't know, the police would burst in the room and arrest the bank robbers.

Speaker 0

比如她男朋友猛地撞开门,正好逮住他们俩躺在一张床上。

Her boyfriend burst through the door and caught them sleeping with each other in the same bed, for example.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

所以冲进房间,就是猛地冲破门冲进去。

So to burst through the door, burst in the room.

Speaker 0

结果里面什么都没有。

And there was nothing there at all.

Speaker 0

根本没那个年轻人。

No young man.

Speaker 0

连他的一点影子都没找到。

No sign of him.

Speaker 0

要是说‘没发现任何迹象’,就是完全没有痕迹、没有任何证据。

If there's no sign of something, it means there's no trace, no evidence.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

我们常这么说,比如‘没一丝生机’‘毫无起色’。

So we they say things like no sign of life, no sign of improvement.

Speaker 0

我检查过他的工作了。

I've I've checked his work.

Speaker 0

我看了他过去三个月的作业,说实话,根本看不出一点进步。

I've checked his work over the last three months, and, honestly, I'm not seeing any sign of improvement at all.

Speaker 0

我不太明白哪儿出问题了。

I'm not sure what's what's going wrong.

Speaker 0

他到底卡在哪儿了?

Why what's holding him back?

Speaker 0

为啥他一点进展都没有?

Why isn't he making any progress?

Speaker 0

一点进步的迹象都没有。

No sign of improvement.

Speaker 0

说实话,他最近都没来上课。

Well, to be honest, he hasn't been attending classes.

Speaker 0

过去这两周,我教室里根本没见着他人影。

These last two weeks, there's been no sign of him at all in my classroom.

Speaker 0

所以啊,压根儿没任何迹象表明他有在做些什么。

So no indication or evidence that that something is there.

Speaker 0

就剩一股刺鼻的气味了。

Except a pungent smell.

Speaker 0

刺鼻的气味就是那种特别浓烈、尖锐的气味。

So a pungent smell is a very strong, sharp smell.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

一股特别冲的味儿。

Very powerful smell.

Speaker 0

刺鼻的气味。

A pungent smell.

Speaker 0

挺有意思的是,咱们平时只用‘刺鼻’来形容气味。

It's it's interesting that we use the word pungent only with smell.

Speaker 0

刺鼻的气味。

A pungent smell.

Speaker 0

刺鼻的臭味。

Pungent odor.

Speaker 0

Odor就是smell的另一个说法。

Odor is another word for smell.

Speaker 0

这个词也带有负面含义。

It's it's negative as well.

Speaker 0

通常都是负面的。

It's it's usually negative.

Speaker 0

所以房间里那股味道又浓又强烈,估计还不太好闻。

So it was a strong, powerful, and probably unpleasant smell.

Speaker 0

房间里全是那种动物的刺鼻味儿,说不上来是啥味儿,又黏又腥,还带着一股硫磺味儿,动物味儿和硫磺味儿混在一起。

So all there was in the room was a pungent smell of animal, a kind of, ugh, creepy, musky kind of animal smell and brimstone, animal and brimstone mixed together.

Speaker 0

硫磺是什么东西?

What is brimstone?

Speaker 0

这词你可能只在《圣经》里见过,其实就是从地底下冒出来的那种气味。

It's the sort of word that you might read in the Bible, and it is essentially a smell that comes out of the ground.

Speaker 0

《圣经》里提到硫磺,总是跟地狱联系在一起。

And it's in the Bible, it is associated with hell.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

但实际上,硫磺味很可能就是硫的气味,这种化学物质会从地底下冒出来。

But in fact, brimstone is probably the smell of sulfur, which is a chemical that comes out of the ground.

Speaker 0

你知道温泉在哪吗?

You know where there are hot springs?

Speaker 0

就是那种地下水靠近地底炽热火山岩的地方,硫经常从这种温泉水里冒泡出来,闻起来有股特别的味道。

Hot springs where water runs close to, I suppose, volcanic rock under the ground that's hot, and sulfur is a chemical that often bubbles up through that kind of hot spring water, and it smells a certain way.

Speaker 0

其实,那就是硫磺味。

That is brimstone, in fact.

Speaker 0

不过这个词通常只出现在《圣经》里,指的就是地狱的气味。

But it's a word that's used typically in the Bible, and it refers to the smell of hell.

Speaker 0

所以硫磺味就像是从地狱里冒出来的毒气。

So brimstone is like air gas that comes from hell.

Speaker 0

明白吗?

Okay?

Speaker 0

《圣经》里总提到火与硫磺。

We talk about fire and brimstone in the Bible.

Speaker 0

这词带着浓厚的宗教文学色彩。

It has a literary religious connotation.

Speaker 0

空气中弥漫着硫磺的气味。

The air smelled of brimstone.

Speaker 0

现在没人怎么用这个词了。

It's not a word that people use very much.

Speaker 0

但在这故事里,用得特别贴切,因为它唤起了宗教意象和地狱般的邪恶魔力。

But in this story, it's quite appropriate because it evokes religious imagery and the kind of evil magic of hell.

Speaker 0

一股动物腥味混着硫磺的刺鼻气味。

A pungent smell of animal and brimstone mixed together.

Speaker 0

地上只躺着一只鞋,再没别的东西。

And lying on the floor was a single shoe, nothing more.

Speaker 0

这事儿上了报纸,随后就传得满城风雨。

The story reached the newspapers, and from there, it traveled far and wide.

Speaker 0

“走遍天下”就是个挺地道的表达。

To travel far and wide, is just a nice fixed expression.

Speaker 0

意思就是跑很远的地方,去很多不同的地方。

It means to travel over long distances to many different places.

Speaker 0

他为了寻找答案,走遍了世界各地。

He traveled far and wide in search of answers.

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

这次,这消息传得满城风雨,最后传到了一位著名耶稣会神父的耳朵里。

In this case, the news traveled far and wide until it reached the ears of a renowned Jesuit priest.

Speaker 0

耶稣会神父就是天主教里的一种神父。

A Jesuit priest is a form of Catholic priest.

Speaker 0

这位著名的神父,是那种口碑特别好、做事很出色、声望很高的神父。

A a renowned priest, that is a priest who is famous, famous for doing good work, someone who's got a great reputation.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

一位声名卓著的神父,口碑特别好。

A renowned priest, famous for having a great reputation.

Speaker 0

享誉全球。

World renowned.

Speaker 0

享誉全球的《Luke的英语播客》。

The world renowned Luke's English podcast.

Speaker 0

一位在语言学领域德高望重的专家。

A renowned expert in linguistics.

Speaker 0

大卫·克里斯特尔是语言学界一位顶尖专家。

David Crystal is a renowned expert in in linguistics.

Speaker 0

这词跟‘著名’意思差不多,但更正式一点。

It's a sort of formal synonym of the word famous.

Speaker 0

明白了。

Okay.

Speaker 0

对了,最后我会做个简单的词汇小测验,帮你巩固一下今天学到的内容。

By the way, what I'm gonna do at the end of this is I'll do a little vocab quiz at the end of this episode just to give you a chance to review what you've picked up from this.

Speaker 0

明白吗?

Okay?

Speaker 0

所以等到故事讲完、快结束的时候,你会有机会回想一下我刚才提到的那些词。

So you'll have a chance to recall the words that I'm going through, nearer the end of the episode when I finish the story.

Speaker 0

一位有经验的驱魔师。

An experienced exorcist.

Speaker 0

驱魔师呢,就是专门驱除邪灵的人。

So an exorcist, yes, is someone who removes evil spirits.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

你看过电影《驱魔人》吗?

You've have you seen the film, The Exorcist?

Speaker 0

这是一部很棒的恐怖片,讲的是一个女孩被魔鬼附身的故事。

It's an excellent horror film about a girl who gets possessed by the devil.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

这玩意儿太吓人了。

It's terrifying stuff.

Speaker 0

他决定去那个房间,试着把里面作祟的邪灵赶出去。

He decided he would go to this room and attempt to expel whatever evil lurked there.

Speaker 0

‘Expel’就是强迫某物离开的意思。

To expel something is to force something to leave.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

其实这个词最常见的用法是说学校里表现差的学生,学校会让他们滚蛋。

It's actually probably most commonly used to talk about children who are badly behaved at school, and they are told by the school that they have to leave.

Speaker 0

那个孩子被开除了。

The the child is expelled from the school.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

这里呢,是这位驱魔师要把房间里的邪灵赶走。

In this case, it's this exorcist who is going to expel the evil from the room.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

所以就得让他们滚出去。

So make them leave.

Speaker 0

在这种情况下,是要把那个……什么邪恶的东西赶出去?

In this case, it's to expel whatever eagle eagle?

Speaker 0

不对。

No.

Speaker 0

我觉得跟鹰一点关系都没有。

I don't think there was an eagle involved.

Speaker 0

把房间里潜伏的邪恶力量赶出去。

To expel whatever evil lurked in the room.

Speaker 0

‘潜伏’这个词用得真妙,邪恶灵体就爱这么干。

So to lurk, this is a nice verb, and this is the sort of thing that an evil spirit would do.

Speaker 0

就是偷偷躲着,悄悄等着。

It means to wait and hide and wait secretly.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

就是说,你一个人半夜醒来,之前刚听完一个恐怖故事,突然觉得房间里某个角落藏着东西,或者浴室里有东西,门后头有人躲着,悄悄等着,是个邪恶的东西——就是这种感觉。

Like, this is what you are terrified of in your house when you wake up in the middle of the night and you're on your own and you listen to a scary story just before you went to bed, and you wake up in the middle of the night and you are convinced that there's something lurking in the corner of the room, or you you you become convinced that there's something lurking in in your bathroom, or there's something lurking behind the door waiting, hiding secretly, something evil waiting and hiding, lurking.

Speaker 0

是啊。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

其实我们上网的时候也这么说。

I mean, we also use this on the Internet.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

那种在聊天室、社区,或者评论区里不说话、光看的人,就叫‘潜水’。

Someone who's lurking is someone who is in a chat room or someone who's in a a community, maybe in a maybe in a comment section, but they're not taking part.

Speaker 0

他们就只是在那儿盯着看。

They're just sitting there observing.

Speaker 0

这就是网上说的‘潜水’——不发言,不参与。

That's lurking on the Internet, not actually commenting, not taking part.

Speaker 0

但他们就在那儿,只是不露面而已。

But they're they're there, but they're just not showing themselves.

Speaker 0

这也叫潜伏。

That's also lurking.

Speaker 0

这次,他决定进这个房间,试着把里面潜伏的邪祟赶走。

In this case, he decided he'd go into this room and and attempt to expel whatever evil lurked there.

Speaker 0

人们再次恳求。

Again, the people pleaded.

Speaker 0

警告又一次被无视了。

Again, the warnings were ignored.

Speaker 0

进屋前,神父只说了一句叮嘱。

Before entering, the priest gave only one instruction.

Speaker 0

如果我在房间里出了事,要是和以前一样,我的一只鞋会留在这儿。

If by chance something happens to me in this room, if the pattern is the same, one of my shoes will remain.

Speaker 0

不管发生什么,不管这房间里的邪祟到底是什么秘密,我都会写在我的鞋上。

And whatever happens, whatever is the secret of the evil of that room, I will write that on my shoe.

Speaker 0

如果我出事了,就看看那双鞋,答案就在那儿。

If I'm gone, look at the shoe because the answer to this puzzle will be there.

Speaker 0

说实话,这事儿本身就挺荒唐的。

I mean, it's a bit ridiculous already.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

他咋可能在那么短时间里在鞋上写东西啊?

Because how is he gonna quickly write something on the shoe?

Speaker 0

我也不知道。

I don't know.

Speaker 0

但不管怎样,他还是进去了。

But, anyway, he stepped inside.

Speaker 0

门在他身后关上了。

The door closed behind him.

Speaker 0

楼下,一家人围在火炉旁,听着挂钟滴答滴答的声音。

Downstairs, the family sat by the fire listening to the steady tick of the grandfather clock.

Speaker 0

落地钟就是那种高高的老式钟,立在地板上,特别高大。

A grandfather clock is like a big upright clock, an old fashioned type of clock that is like a large thing that sits on the floor, and it's so tall.

Speaker 0

差不多一个人那么高,竖着放,老是滴答滴答响。

It's about the size of a person, and it's a long upright clock that often goes tick tock tick tock.

Speaker 0

那种就叫落地钟。

That's a grandfather clock.

Speaker 0

真是挺有味道的玩意儿。

Rather wonderful things.

Speaker 0

滴答滴答滴答。

Tick tick tick.

Speaker 0

从楼上,他们听见牧师在祷告。

From above, they heard the priest praying.

Speaker 0

一股淡淡的香火味儿顺着楼梯飘了下来。

They smelled the faint waft of incense drifting down the stairs.

Speaker 0

就是那股若有若无的香火味儿。

So the faint waft of incense.

Speaker 0

香是烧出来的东西,会散发出特定的气味。

Incense is stuff that is burned, and it gives off a certain smell.

Speaker 0

神父做宗教仪式的时候,都会用香。

And priests use incense when they're doing their religious ceremonies.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

你去教堂的时候,是不是能闻到乳香那种味道?

If you go to church, you smell the smell of frankincense or something like that.

Speaker 0

那味道特别好闻。

It's a a lovely smell.

Speaker 0

其实世界各地的宗教仪式都会烧香,这很普遍。

Incense is used in religious ceremonies, you know, across all cultures, burning incense.

Speaker 0

他们闻到了一缕淡淡的香烟味。

But they smell the faint waft of incense.

Speaker 0

‘waft’这个词是用来形容一阵轻微的气流,或者淡淡的气味。

A waft is like a word to describe and it's a noun to describe a a light movement of air or a smell.

Speaker 0

所以气味会飘在空气中。

So a smell wafts through the air.

Speaker 0

烟也可能这么飘在空气里。

Maybe smoke could waft through the air as well.

Speaker 0

要是邻居在烤蛋糕,蛋糕的香味就会飘进你窗子里。

If your neighbor is baking a delicious cake, the smell of the cake might waft through the window.

Speaker 0

明白了吧?

You see?

Speaker 0

它既可以当动词,也可以当名词用。

So it's a verb and it's a noun.

Speaker 0

香味就这么飘过窗户。

So the smell wafts through the window.

Speaker 0

你能闻到邻居家烤蛋糕时飘出来的那股香味。

You can smell the waft of this delicious, cake being baked in your neighbor's house.

Speaker 0

这时候,他们闻到的就是那淡淡的香烟味,轻轻悠悠地在空气里飘着。

In this case, they smelled the faint waft of incense, like a little smell that just kind of lightly carried through the air.

Speaker 0

淡淡的

Faint.

Speaker 0

那一缕淡淡的气味

The faint waft.

Speaker 0

就是那种很微弱、轻微,不容易察觉的东西

This is a weak, slight, or not very easily noticed thing.

Speaker 0

这是个形容词

It's an adjective.

Speaker 0

对吧

Right?

Speaker 0

淡淡的

Faint.

Speaker 0

那股淡淡的香味

The faint smell.

Speaker 0

就是一种很轻、很弱的气味

It's like a light, weak kind of smell.

Speaker 0

所以他们只闻到一点点他 upstairs 点的香火味。

So they're getting just a a slight smell of the incense that he's burning in the room up there.

Speaker 0

他在搞什么小型宗教仪式,楼下的人能闻到一丝香烟顺着楼梯飘下来。

So he's doing some sort of little religious ceremony, and they can smell the faint waft of incense drifting down the stairs.

Speaker 0

大约四点半的时候,他们注意到那只躺在壁炉边睡觉的狗,睡着了还在低吼。

At around half past four, they looked at the dog who was sleeping by the fire, and in his sleep, he had begun to growl.

Speaker 0

狗就是这样子的。

So this is what dogs do.

Speaker 0

这就挺吓人的。

They go, so that's creepy.

Speaker 0

确实挺瘆人的。

Definitely creepy.

Speaker 0

狗睡觉时都在低吼,就好像它能感应到房间里有邪恶的气息。

If the dog is growling in its sleep, it's as if the dog is somehow able to sense the evil the presence of evil.

Speaker 0

连睡着了都还在吼。

And even in its sleep, it's growling.

Speaker 0

所以这就是低吼,对吧?就是发出那种威胁性的低沉声音。

So that's growl, right, to make a low threatening sound.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

他们看着它的时候,狗背上的毛慢慢竖了起来。

As they watched him, the hair on the dog's back slowly rose bristling.

Speaker 0

就是狗背上的毛会竖起来。

So the hair goes up on the back of the dog.

Speaker 0

‘竖毛’就是说狗的毛发或毛茸茸的皮毛会一根根直立起来。

Bristle to bristle, means in in the case of the fur, the dog's fur, or hair, if hair or fur bristles, it means it stands up on end.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

通常是因为生气、害怕,或者太兴奋了。

And this is usually because of anger or fear or excitement.

Speaker 0

狗看到那个陌生人时,毛就全竖起来了。

The dog's fur bristled when it saw the stranger.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

所以毛会竖起来,皮毛会竖起来。

So hair bristles, fur bristles.

Speaker 0

对人类来说,你可以说:我后颈的汗毛都竖起来了。

And for humans, you could say, I felt the hair on the back of my neck bristling.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

这说的是毛发。

So that's in reference to hair.

Speaker 0

但这个词也常用于比喻,意思是做出愤怒或防御性的反应。

But this is also common in a more figurative sense, meaning to react in an angry or defensive way.

Speaker 0

这也可以形容人的行为。

So this can refer to human behavior.

Speaker 0

这里不是这个意思,但它确实可以形容人——比如生气了或者变得戒备起来。

That's not the way it's used here, but it can refer to human behavior, meaning to react defensively or to react angrily.

Speaker 0

比如,他听到有人指控他作弊,立马就炸了。

For example, he bristled at the accusation that he was cheating.

Speaker 0

啥?

What?

Speaker 0

我?

Me?

Speaker 0

作弊?

Cheating?

Speaker 0

我觉得不至于吧。

I don't think so.

Speaker 0

所以,‘bristle’可以表示因生气而反应激烈,对批评特别敏感。

So to bristle with anger, to bristle at criticism.

Speaker 0

明白吗?

Okay?

Speaker 0

就是一种防御性的反应。

So react defensively.

Speaker 0

什么?

What?

Speaker 0

我?

Me?

Speaker 0

我不这么认为。

I don't think so.

Speaker 0

但这次,狗的毛竖起来了。

But in this case, the dog's hair bristled.

Speaker 0

因为它当时,我想,是生气了或者害怕了。

It stood up on end because it was, I guess, angry or frightened.

Speaker 0

最后他发出了一声,意思是发出了声音。

Finally, he let out, meaning he made a sound.

Speaker 0

他发出一声悠长、悲戚、令人毛骨悚然的嚎叫。

He let out a long mournful blood curdling howl.

Speaker 0

嚎叫就是狗和狼会发出的那种声音。

So a howl is what dogs do, wolves do this.

Speaker 0

哎哟。

Ow.

Speaker 0

这才是真正的嚎叫。

That is a howl.

Speaker 0

那种让人毛骨悚然的嚎叫,什么叫毛骨悚然呢?就是液体变出块状物那种感觉,对吧。

A blood curdling howl is so blood curdling to curdle is when liquid turns into, like, lumpy a sort of yeah.

Speaker 0

液体变出块状,通常是因为变质了。

When liquid turns into lumps, often because it's gone bad.

Speaker 0

牛奶就是典型的例子。

And this is typically what happens to milk.

Speaker 0

如果你把一瓶牛奶放外面放一周,它就会变得特别糟糕,结成一堆一堆的块。

So if you've left a bottle of milk, if you if you leave it out for a week, the milk will start to go all terrible, and it'll go lumpy.

Speaker 0

牛奶变质了。

The milk curdles.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

现在‘令人毛骨悚然’就是个说法,意思是你吓得要死,吓得血都快凝固了。

Now blood curdling is just an expression that means, basically, you get really scared, and it's enough to curdle your blood.

Speaker 0

就是那种能把你的血都变成别的东西的恐惧感。

It's enough to transform your blood into something else.

Speaker 0

这其实就是一个常用的比喻。

It's just an image that's commonly used.

Speaker 0

所以‘令人毛骨悚然的尖叫’是个特别常见的搭配。

So blood curdling, a blood curdling scream is a very common collocation.

Speaker 0

就是那种能让你血都冻住、血都凝固的尖叫。

So it just means a scream that, like, freezes your blood or curdles your blood.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

就像牛奶放久了变质、结块那样。

Like the way that milk curdles when it goes old.

Speaker 0

所以一个哀伤的、令人毛骨悚然的嚎叫。

So a blood curdling howl, a mournful blood curdling howl.

Speaker 0

悲痛的,就是特别伤心。

Mournful is very sad.

Speaker 0

你要是为谁哀悼,那就是有人去世了,你因为这个感到难过。

Mourn, if you mourn someone, it means someone has died and you feel sad because someone has died.

Speaker 0

所以‘哀悼’就是一种特别悲伤的情绪。

So that's mourn, a very sad feeling.

Speaker 0

而‘悲痛的’呢,就是跟这个相关的。

And mournful, you know, relates to that.

Speaker 0

所以悲痛的嚎叫,就是一种特别伤心的嚎叫。

So a mournful howl, a very sad howl.

Speaker 0

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 0

血淋淋的嚎叫,就是那种既吓人又悲痛的叫声。

A blood curdling howl is one that's very scary and mournful.

Speaker 0

所以说,这真的挺吓人的。

So this is, you know, pretty terrifying.

Speaker 0

他发出了一声长嚎,就是发出了那种声音。

He let out this howl, meaning he made that noise.

Speaker 0

然后楼上房间里的人听到了尖叫声。

And then the room from the room upstairs, they heard the scream.

Speaker 0

他们举着灯笼,攥着十字架、圣像和圣水,冲上了楼。

They ran upstairs clutching lanterns, crosses, crucifixes, holy water.

Speaker 0

攥着,就是紧紧抓着的意思。

Clutching, meaning holding tightly.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

他们抓得可紧了。

They were holding it very tightly.

Speaker 0

比如说,她紧紧攥住了他的胳膊。

For example, she clutched his arm.

Speaker 0

她吓坏了。

She was so frightened.

Speaker 0

她紧紧抓着他的胳膊。

She clutched his arm.

Speaker 0

我死死攥着我的包。

I clutched my bag.

Speaker 0

你懂的吧。

You know?

Speaker 0

通常当你特别绝望或者情绪激动的时候,就会死死抓住什么东西。

It's often when you're feeling desperate or emotional, you clutch something.

Speaker 0

就是抓得特别紧。

You hold it tight.

Speaker 0

当时他们一手攥着灯笼照明,一手抓着十字架和圣像。

In this case, they were clutching lanterns for for light, clutching crosses and crucifixes.

Speaker 0

这些明显都是宗教符号。

These are obviously sort of religious symbols.

Speaker 0
