And then the second piece of news that he learned was that John Turk, last night, when he'd been released, killed himself.

He poisoned himself and killed himself and died the night before.

And the ending of the story is when Johnson realizes the moment Turk died was the moment that Turk first appeared in his room to claim his bag.
