Speaker 1

Last night, I was confident I spoke to some I thought the market was surprisingly resilient.

Speaker 1

Turns out today was the day when people started raising the money that I thought they'd have

Speaker 2

要 到

to To

Speaker 1

participate in a bunch of upcoming mega IPOs.

Speaker 1

The Nasdaq plummeting 4.18%.

Speaker 1

People wanted that money so you can go buy some Elon Musk.

Speaker 1

I was right about one thing though.

Speaker 1

Supply can be the reason why the bull gets killed.

Speaker 1

And it looks like there's a lot more supply coming down the pike than I have bargained for.

Speaker 1

Now, today had a multitude of stress points.

Speaker 1

First, we got an unemployment report that was way too hot, too strong, at least from the perspective of someone who wants the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates.

Speaker 1

Even though there's a gigantic underclass in this country desperately needs interest rates relieved as they're being stung by tariff inflation, ruining price of gasoline.

Speaker 1

But the Fed doesn't cut when we have this kind of decent job growth.

Speaker 1

It's off the table.

Speaker 1

If anything, people are talking rate hikes.

Speaker 1

It was way too hot for the Fed, but too cool for the many Americans that are on the fringe, unemployed, often without health care, and now coping with needless cuts in food stamps.

Speaker 1

So interest rates go up, terrible for stocks, and not good for anything else except for maybe some of the people who lend money for a living.

Speaker 1

That means some buyers felt that they should pivot and start selling tech and buying companies that do better in a slowdown.

Speaker 1

Why better in a slowdown?

Speaker 1

Because this labor report was so strong that many bond traders are now betting the Fed will have to raise interest rates maybe several times in the next year in order to stamp out inflation.

Speaker 1

That's gonna lead to a slowdown.

Speaker 1

It'd be real bad for stocks.

Speaker 1

Stocks are not ready for rate hikes.

Speaker 1

Until today's sell off, they were prime for rate cuts.

Speaker 1

At the end of the day, the bull thesis for the market rest on the idea that sooner or later we're gonna get some rate cuts because many Americans will benefit from it.

Speaker 1

But now rates might be going up and gasoline staying up, not great for our service based economy.

Speaker 1

There's still one more crosscurrent.

Speaker 1

A report today said that Net of Platforms is considering a colossal fundraiser to pay for its AI ambitions, like the one we saw just from Alphabet this week.

Speaker 1

I've warned for months and months that the market can't handle the deluge of new supply, and I'm looking right about that thesis.

Speaker 1

Even I was wrong about how quickly things would sneak up on us.

Speaker 1

One week ago, we didn't know that Apple was gonna do a multi billion dollar fundraise.

Speaker 1

They did.

Speaker 1

This we didn't know that that Meta might do a fundraise.

Speaker 1

We didn't throw no.

Speaker 1

A week ago that Anthropic would come public.

Speaker 1

当然。

Sure.

Speaker 1

Sounds like they're about to.

Speaker 1

We don't know if Amazon or Microsoft might do a fundraise.

Speaker 1

那OpenAI呢?

How about OpenAI?

Speaker 1

Nothing would surprise me at this point, though, other than a snide comment about what took you so long to Microsoft.

Speaker 1

But we know about the SpaceX deal, and it's so large that while the money to pay for it has to come somewhere.

Speaker 1

And right now, it's coming from other stocks, particularly tech stocks, which is something I'm cover in-depth later in the show.

Speaker 1

For now, let's just say you're looking at a market that's hostage to interest rates and high oil coupled with a monster amount of new stock offering and new stock coming through the pipeline that can't be bought unless investors sell something else.

Speaker 1

In order to do this, you gotta Sell, sell, sell, And boy are people doing it.

Speaker 1

So we're in the The house of pain.

Speaker 1

Not here.

Speaker 2

House of

Speaker 1

中。

pleasure.

Speaker 1

A toxic stew.

Speaker 1

But then we have to say to yourself because that's real gloomy.

Speaker 1

Is it bad for everybody?

Speaker 1

And the answer is, as often the case, no it's not.

Speaker 1

For instance, it's not bad for Apple, which not only doesn't need to raise tens of billions of dollars for its AI ambitions, it's actually piggybacking off of Alphabet and getting them to pay for the piggyback.

Speaker 1

That's what happens when you have more than 2,500,000,000 active devices and your audience is too juicy for a competitive chatbot to pass up?

Speaker 1

They need to connect with Apple's beeps.

Speaker 1

Lots of people seem unhappy with Siri.

Speaker 1

Maybe we tune in and watch Apple worldwide developers conference on Monday with my pal, Scottie Wagner, who will be out there, and I can't wait to learn more.

Speaker 1

I think Siri's gonna get smart.

Speaker 1

For the longest time, we questioned Apple's ambitions in the AI space.

Speaker 1

Why weren't they spending more money?

Speaker 1

Why weren't they hiring more talent?

Speaker 3

Did you

Speaker 1

did you switch to Samsung because of that?

Speaker 1

Alright.

Speaker 1

Turns out they were probably right to stay on the sidelines because the cost of this build out was insane.

Speaker 1

It's a big reason why the stocks been flying while the buyers and big tech are getting crushed.

Speaker 1

And we start we have to start thinking, can they really keep the spending up?

Speaker 1

The food stocks have been unbearable.

Speaker 1

I mean, they're just disastrous.

Speaker 1

Campbell's reports on Monday, and here's the stock that's down 22% for the year, 7.2% yield.

Speaker 1

The sky high dividend yield though is really a sign that people believe Campbell's can't cover its payout.

Speaker 1

I don't know if that's true, but I do know this.

Speaker 1

If someone doesn't consolidate this whole packaged food industry, we're gonna have a whole bunch of low dollar amount stocks that aren't worth owning because they won't be able to pay their dividends.

Speaker 1

No growth, often unhealthy, in the crosshairs of GLP dash ones, no pricing power.

Speaker 1

That's almost every food stock out there.

Speaker 1

Only consolidation can save them.

Speaker 1

Epiqlo's, we also hear from Vail Resorts.

Speaker 1

Alright.

Speaker 1

Now they've been rebounding of that.

Speaker 1

I don't if you see the stock.

Speaker 1

I wanna find out if that move is for real.

Speaker 1

I think it might be.

Speaker 1

But then again, my wife called me right before the show and said she can't believe she just paid $110 to fill up the tank.

Speaker 1

Not exactly a great backdrop for taking a long trip to the skis and to do some skiing.

Speaker 1

The last time that JM Smucker reported, it jumped up on what turned out to be just an okay quarter, and then it got smashed.

Speaker 1

The rally and the offbeat names like the Staples today swept up a company that makes Twinkies, coffee, dog food, and Uncrustables.

Speaker 1

I think it's gonna get swept right back down when it reports Tuesday morning.

Speaker 1

After the close, we hear from two companies with totally divergent past, Casey's General Story and Cracker Barrel.

Speaker 1

Now Casey's dominates small town America, and its love for its breakfast pizza was actually really tasty.

Speaker 1

Cracker Barrel

Cracker Barrel is trying to remake itself.

Speaker 1

Stock's up 32% year to date, but it's way down from where it was a couple years ago.

Speaker 1

Stock closed at $33 and change.

Speaker 1

It was at $71 less than a year ago.

Speaker 1

I'd love to be a buyer, But we have to see some earnings worth.

Speaker 1

Are people skimping on their pets?

Speaker 1

That's supposed to never happen.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

I mean, I know when I interviewed Kevin Hassett, the he's director of the National Economic Council.

Speaker 1

Hassett was was I think he was really excited that everyone's doing so well in the country.

Speaker 1

That's great.

Speaker 1

I don't although I said I took issue with the idea It was everyone.

Speaker 1

But when I talked to the retailers, they sound much more bleak, including Petco, Simple Wolf, which might Blue Owls.

Speaker 1

I mean, I got noises for every single one of these animal names.

Speaker 1

But, anyway, who they Petco missed the court pretty badly.

Speaker 1

Maybe Chewy misses when it reports.

Speaker 1

That stock is so cheap.

Speaker 1

I don't know.

Speaker 1

Now the the big hyperscalers are all afraid of being left behind.

Speaker 1

That's why you keep seeing these fundraisers.

Speaker 1

So they keep spending and spending and spending.

Speaker 1

Oracle figured this out a long time ago and got in the business of building data centers.

Speaker 1

Is it working?

Speaker 1

Well, I don't know.

Speaker 1

We'll find out Wednesday.

Speaker 1

Thursday, two better companies report, Adobe and Lenard.

Speaker 1

Adobe

Adobe is part of the software as a service cohort, and that's a shrinking cohort.

Speaker 1

More importantly, there are some companies that make similar but less expensive software in order to be able to design things.

Speaker 1

Even after it's thrashing, I think it's not low enough to own.

Speaker 1

I'm not kidding.

Speaker 1

When I was going around with Hatchet, one thing was thinking with with I was thinking about Lennar.

Speaker 1

They need lower interest rates to sell more homes.

Speaker 1

And I I said that to Asar.

Speaker 1

I said, look, you know, we gotta we gotta move more homes.

Speaker 1

Home building is big industry in our country, or at least it punches above its weight.

Speaker 1

It's only 10% of the actual interest.

Speaker 1

Finally, here we are back with the SpaceX deal.

Speaker 1

IPO day.

Speaker 1

I hope by this point that all the money needed for the deal will have been raised and then some, and we don't have a sell off every single day this week like we had today.

Speaker 1

That way, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon maybe are able to do deals without getting crushed or crushing their stock.

Speaker 1

Bottom line, let's get this over with so this market can resume its advance.

Speaker 1

Something that's gonna be very difficult as long as we're being flooded with new stock.

Speaker 1

Remember, higher rates, too much supply, and lousy earnings can really sap the wooden dailies out of a stock market.

Speaker 1

Right now, we got two out of three, and it ain't good.

Speaker 1

喂。

Hey.

Speaker 1

How about Sid in Colorado, please,

Speaker 4

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

Hey, Jim.

Speaker 4

This is Sid's dad calling from Parker, Colorado.

Speaker 4

Sid has a question for you.

Speaker 1

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 1

Sure, Sid.

Speaker 1

Hey, Jim.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Hey.

Speaker 1

What's up?

Speaker 4

Hey, Jim.

Speaker 4

I'm a high school I'm a high school student here in Colorado, and I was looking to start a position in.

Speaker 4

But with all this back and forth in the news about The US conflict, I was wondering if it was a good time to enter.

Speaker 1

You know, Sid, first of all, you're sound like a smart fella.

Speaker 1

I think that you buy here's what I'd like you to do.

Speaker 1

Let's say you wanna buy five shares.

Speaker 1

Why don't you buy two now?

Speaker 1

And then if it gets below 500, buy the other three.

Speaker 1

I don't want you to come in all at once.

Speaker 1

The stock's been very volatile, but it's all it's been almost all the way up to almost 700.

Speaker 1

Here is at $5.23.

Speaker 1

I want you to buy some and then below 500, you'll buy the rest.

Speaker 1

And that's that's what I'm trying to do with with my travel trust.

Speaker 1

Buy slowly.

Speaker 1

Let's go to Damon, Illinois.

Speaker 1

Dave.

Speaker 3

Doctor Cramer, I'm torn between celebrating your thirty eighth garden season or some of your finest CEO interviews including Dell, Qualcomm, Federal Express, Intel, Amazon, and CrowdStrike.

Speaker 1

Oh, man.

Speaker 1

Dave, settle for the garden.

Speaker 1

I'm gardening this evening.

Speaker 1

I'll get my best briony.

Speaker 1

This is right now.

Speaker 1

This is see it.

Speaker 1

I can't garden.

Speaker 1

I see it.

Speaker 1

I got a gardening briony.

Speaker 1

And have a little of my wife's phosphoro and really just get snockered after day like today.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

Anyway, are you allowed to say that?

Speaker 1

I just did, Dave.

Speaker 1

What's up?

Speaker 3

Sounds good.

Speaker 3

Jim, this $80,000,000,000 company provides optoelectronic components and devices critical for the supplying of the AI build outs.

Speaker 3

It's up over a 100% on the year.

Speaker 3

You mentioned them recently in your AI compute index in the infrastructure layer of the cake.

Speaker 3

The company's name means clear, logical, well organized.

Speaker 3

Of course, I'm talking about Coherent Corp.

Speaker 3

所以……

So

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 1

So here's the problem, Dave, and thank you for calling about Coherent.

Speaker 1

I own for the job that show.

Speaker 1

I got a couple of stocks like this and I got a feeling that they could really get hit.

Speaker 1

I want you actually if you own it to sell half right around here even if it's down 25 and then wait.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

I want to do that for some of the stocks that I had talked about on air and really couldn't, but I feel like they're gonna get get really smashed.

Speaker 1

And then you can buy back that stock that you sold.

Speaker 1

Thank you.

Speaker 1

I'll see you, in the garden probably tomorrow.

Speaker 1

Anyway, I think we need to get through the SpaceX IPO before the market can make anything and move higher, particularly if there's a lot more deals.

Speaker 1

Remember, supply can kill the bull and here comes the supply and I don't like it.

Speaker 1

Well, my money today, AstraZeneca was a bright spot and an ugly day for the market.

Speaker 1

I'm sitting down with the CEO to find out more about the company's plans to generate $80,000,000,000 from everybody in 2030.

Speaker 1

Then I'm digging into what is ailing that athleisure sector of retail and just really disappointing results results from some of the leaders in the category.

Speaker 1

And the S and P announced yesterday would not fast track the inclusion of mega IPOs in the indices.

This morning, pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca rang the opening bell to celebrate their transfer to the New York Stock Exchange.

Speaker 1

It's the largest transfer in the history of the 234 year old institution.

Speaker 1

The British pharma stock has rallied 30% over the past twelve months, been a good one, and is very much on track to hit the ambitious long term financial targets they rolled out in 2024.

Speaker 1

That's largely thanks to the company's booming oncology business.

Speaker 1

After they rang the opening bell, I had the chance to sit down with sir Pascal Souria.

Speaker 1

He's the CEO of AstraZeneca.

Speaker 1

Check it out.

Speaker 1

Well, to get started, sir Pascal, you rang the opening bell today.

Speaker 1

This was the largest market capitalization transfer in two hundred and thirty four years.

Speaker 1

Why don't you tell us why you decided to move to the New York Stock Exchange?

Speaker 5

Well, Jim, thank you for having me, and it's really exciting and a great moment of pride for all of us at AstraZeneca.

Speaker 5

We are gonna be the largest British company with a US share in The United States, and we did this because we wanted to show our commitment to this country.

Speaker 5

We wanted to show our commitment to innovation, to patients, to bringing our medicines to the many patients around the country that benefit, from it.

Speaker 5

But importantly, we also wanted to make sure that US shareholders who are not comfortable or not able to buy an ADR can buy our shares.

Speaker 1

I'm so glad you said that.

Speaker 5

They can benefit from our growth.

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 1

Because I've been recommending your stock, but people always say, Jim, it's overseas.

Speaker 1

I don't know where it is.

Speaker 1

You've made it so that we can all embrace it.

Speaker 1

I think it's a very smart move.

Speaker 1

And you've also embraced America with the plan to invest $50,000,000,000 in American manufacturing, including a research center in Kendall Square, Massachusetts.

Speaker 5

是的

Yes.

Speaker 5

没错

Exactly.

Speaker 5

I mean, the 50,000,000,000 is not only a pledge.

Speaker 5

It's reality.

Speaker 5

We've started investing 4 and a half billion dollars in Virginia in a new plant.

Speaker 5

We have a new cell therapy plant in Ogville, in Maryland.

Speaker 5

We're investing $2,000,000,000 in Maryland.

Speaker 5

We're investing half 1,000,000,000 in Texas.

Speaker 5

We're investing in Santa Monica in cell therapy.

Speaker 5

We're investing in manufacturing sites around the country and we're investing in R and D with this new site in Kendall Square in, Cambridge, Massachusetts, where we will have 3,000 scientists working on our pipeline.

Speaker 1

I live there, so I think it's very exciting because that is the hub.

Speaker 1

People think Silicon Valley is the only place we do anything interesting in this country.

Speaker 1

Untrue.

Speaker 1

Let's talk about the 80,000,000,000 in total revenue by 2030, your goal.

Speaker 1

I think it's ambitious, but you're already pretty far along.

Speaker 5

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 5

当然。

Absolutely.

Speaker 5

And when we announced this number, this target in May 2024, a number of people told us, oh my god, it's a bit stretched, you can't get there.

Speaker 5

Today we have some people telling us maybe it's a soft target, maybe you can exceed it.

Speaker 5

We still believe it's an ambitious target, but we are on our way to getting there not only with the products we have on our hands today and that are growing but also because we are launching new products.

Speaker 5

This week, we presented data this weekend at the ASCO for a new breast cancer treatment.

Speaker 5

We've launched two or three weeks ago in The US.

Speaker 5

I was at the sales launch meeting in Las Vegas.

Speaker 5

We're launching a new treatment for hypertension for people who are

Speaker 1

I think that's what

Speaker 3

we're talking

Speaker 1

about because it's a silent killer.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 1

And to me, anybody that has done like Baxfendi, anyone who can bring this to light, both awareness and what your drug is, you'll save hundreds of thousands of lives.

Speaker 5

没错。

Absolutely.

Speaker 5

There are like tens of millions of people who are on three, four drugs, but their blood pressure is not controlled, and the clock is ticking because that blood pressure affects their kidney, affects their heart, affects their body, so you really need to get them under control.

Speaker 1

Very much so.

Speaker 1

Now, you have a really amazing oncology portfolio.

Speaker 1

There's another company that we have on a lot that is also interested in some of the same indications you are, Johnson and Johnson, with the Ribrovant and Las Cruces, excuse me, my inability to pronounce some of these, but are you concerned about the competition, or is it just something you have to expect if you're in that business?

Speaker 5

Well, let me just say, first of all, I've been to the ASCO for twenty six years every year.

Speaker 5

It's always a very exciting time to be at the ASCO.

Speaker 5

Lots of great data that are presented.

Speaker 5

We presented good data, great data in breast cancer with Camisestron, our new product.

Speaker 5

We presented data in liver cancer, new way to treat it.

Speaker 5

In terms of your question, yes we always focus on competition but we believe we have a great product in Tagrisso.

Speaker 5

We are combining it with chemotherapy in first line lung cancer.

Speaker 5

Great results.

Speaker 5

We have new combinations coming.

Speaker 5

We think we have what it takes to defend our position in lung cancer treatment and continue improving the treatment of this condition.

Speaker 1

Well that's excellent.

Speaker 1

Now I do want to talk about, you do have a big meeting this week in ADA.

Speaker 1

I'm not sure exactly what you're allowed to say and what you're not.

Speaker 1

But you do have something that might compete against a company that we've been recommending very strongly, Eli Lilly, with perhaps a GOP-one obesity space pill.

Speaker 1

Can you talk a little bit about that?

Speaker 5

So we are invested in weight management near term and long term.

Speaker 5

So we are invested in new ways to deliver weight management medicines for all drugs.

Speaker 5

And we're also working on new treatment, new injectable treatment for patients who are at the higher end of body mass index, people who are so called obese, and we're also working on long acting treatments to make it simpler.

Speaker 5

Long acting injectable, monthly injectable instead of weekly.

Speaker 1

Monthly injectable.

Speaker 5

Monthly injectable instead of weekly.

Speaker 5

We are working on mechanisms that will reduce the muscle loss.

Speaker 5

When you lose weight, lose fat and you lose muscle.

Speaker 5

So we want to maximize the fat loss, minimize muscle loss.

Speaker 5

Now going back to your question at the ADA, we will present data, phase 2b data with our oral GLP-one and very exciting data.

Speaker 5

We are moving this product into phase three.

Speaker 5

The way we are addressing weight loss in the weight management segment is not only addressing weight reduction but also addressing the metabolic events, the metabolic syndrome.

Speaker 5

So we have a drug for hypertension, we have a normal PCSK9 in development for cholesterol management, We have combination drugs with this GLP-one.

Speaker 5

So we really want to address not only the visceral adiposity, also the metabolic complications.

Speaker 1

Well that would be great.

Speaker 1

We've talked about wanting competition right there.

Speaker 1

We need it to keep prices down too.

Speaker 1

Now, the last thing I want to discuss is something that a lot of people are talking about there's not a good return on artificial intelligence.

Speaker 1

I keep telling people there are people in science who they wouldn't even take on a drug because it might take years to develop, but maybe now the research would have it.

Speaker 1

So maybe it only takes a month or two and it is very positive.

Speaker 1

Are you seeing AI helping how long it, you know, choosing drugs because you know you can fix it, to beat the disease because of AI, or is it just something that's pie in the sky?

Speaker 5

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 5

Actually, I guess people the people who say that to some extent it's because the product the the the value of AI in our industry is productivity improvement.

Speaker 5

So it's not really reducing cost, it's becoming more faster, smarter in the way you do it.

Speaker 5

So in the way you design a new medicine, a new drug, you can actually find, do it faster of course, doing smarter, come up with new targets, but also you can optimize your molecule, remove what you think is going to be potentially side effects from the molecule and AI helps you do this.

Speaker 5

AI also helps us, making smarter choices in how we develop drugs.

Speaker 5

We have a partnership with a company called Tempus based in Chicago.

Speaker 5

We've done a joint venture with them called Pathos and we are developing, we have developed, an agent that takes all this data together, clinical data, laboratory data and helps us predict the probability of success of a You Phase III know, think about a Phase III trial.

Speaker 5

We spent $304,105 100,000,000 on the trial.

Speaker 5

If you increase the probability of success, the predictive improvement is enormous.

Speaker 1

Well, that's lives.

Speaker 1

That's lives saved.

Speaker 1

And that's what we want.

Speaker 1

That has surpassed Kyle Sorio.

Speaker 1

He's the Executive Director and CEO of AstraZeneca, AZN listed here, and a company that we have supported for a very long time.

Speaker 1

Thank you, Jim.

Speaker 5

Great to see you.

How much worse can the athleisure space get?

Speaker 1

If I say this group's going out of style, that is putting it lightly.

Speaker 1

Last night, reported yet still one more disappointing quarter, and the stock got crushed today.

Speaker 1

Coming more than 8%.

Speaker 1

At this point, I'm no longer surprised when Lulu misses numbers.

Speaker 1

Comes with a stink pants, I guess.

Speaker 1

Stock's down 45% year to date, 65% over the last twelve months, and they're hardly alone.

Speaker 1

Gap's athletic division just reported net sales down 12%.

Speaker 1

They brought in some former Nike executive to ride the ship.

Speaker 1

So far, it hasn't worked.

Speaker 1

It's early.

Speaker 1

In fact, Nike itself has become a real something at all too real for me because we own it for the charitable trust.

Speaker 1

My bad.

Speaker 1

A few years ago, athleisure was

Speaker 6

其中

one of

Speaker 1

the that was it was the best consumer trend out there.

Speaker 1

Athleisure now, better than disco.

Speaker 1

Back when athleisure seemed unstoppable, it felt like a lifestyle shift.

Speaker 1

People were wearing sweatpants while working from home, wearing workout clothes and sneakers to dinner.

Speaker 1

Lululemon

Lululemon was the premium winner.

Speaker 1

Athleta

Athleta was supposed to be Gap's growth engine.

Speaker 1

Nike was the behemoth that owned athletes' performance sports culture.

Speaker 1

Once COVID hit, athleisure practically became the uniform of the pandemic.

Speaker 1

Maybe that made this trend look more durable than it really was though.

Speaker 1

But once the world went back to normal, people went back to the office and started wearing regular clothes again.

Speaker 1

They don't seem too eager to shop at Lululemon or Athleta when they already have closets full of leggings expensive workout gear.

Speaker 1

The bigger problem though is competition.

Speaker 1

And that goes double for Lululemon.

Speaker 1

Few years ago, Lulu felt unique.

Speaker 1

Now everyone makes trendy workout apparel and performance clothes.

Speaker 1

Alo Yoga、Hoka、Nike、Adidas、Athleta,

Aloe Viore, on HOKA, Nike, Adidas, Athleta, and the list goes on and on.

Speaker 1

When everyone wants a piece of a given industry, you gotta race to the bottom unless your brand is truly untouchable.

Speaker 1

And at the end of the day, Lululemon is not Louis Vuitton.

Speaker 1

They may have a great brand, but if people can get similar stuff for less money elsewhere, then they're gonna go elsewhere, including Costco, especially when gas, groceries, and rent have all gotten more expensive.

Speaker 1

You can see the shift in the numbers.

Speaker 1

On the service Lululemon latest quarter was well, it wasn't a disaster, although expectations were pretty low.

Speaker 1

Their sales and earnings both came in a little higher than expected, but the guidance was dismal.

Speaker 1

For the current quarter, management expects to earn a dollar $76.81 when Wall Street was looking for $2.68.

Speaker 1

That hurt it.

Speaker 1

For the full year, management cut their revenue forecast and totally slashed their earnings forecast, and that's what killed it.

Speaker 1

What exactly is the problem here?

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 1

Lululemon

Woo's international business is still holding up.

Speaker 1

Same store sales up 13% or 8% on a constant currency basis.

Speaker 1

But The Americas, their largest and most important regions, saw same store sales down five or 6% on a constant currency basis.

Speaker 1

Magic Express

Magic Express sees the clients to continue, falling by a low double digit percentage in the current quarter, the kiss of death for retail, and by high single digit performance for the full year.

Speaker 1

Awful.

Speaker 1

Hope they can do it, though.

Speaker 1

This used to be Lululemon's fortress.

Speaker 1

Now North America is dragging down the whole company.

Speaker 1

Imagine we talked about headwinds, the tariff impact on declining gross margins.

Speaker 1

They need to strengthen the product energy and the work that they still need to do in order to reignite the growth.

Speaker 1

They also have to speed up their whole system of developing new clothes.

Speaker 1

That's not what investors wanna hear from a stock that already been cut in half.

Speaker 1

Now Athleta tells the same story.

Speaker 1

The Gap overall has been doing better, but Athleta remains the weak link.

Speaker 1

In the the Gap's latest quarter, Athleta's net sales fell 12%.

Speaker 1

Same store sales were down 11%.

Speaker 1

Awful.

Speaker 1

In the previous quarter, Athleta's same store sales were down 10%.

Speaker 1

Gap says it's rebuilding the brand, launched a reimaged assortment in the second half, which I guess is better than doing nothing.

Speaker 1

Athleta was supposed to be a growth brand though, but now it seems like a long turnaround project.

Speaker 1

We don't like those on Wall Street.

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 1

Then there's then there's Nike.

Speaker 1

Not just another apparel company.

Speaker 1

Nike used to be a global machine, the biggest logo in sports.

Speaker 1

But even Nike's been struggling with the same broader issues, competition, stale products, not enough freshers, and a consumer is no longer willing to pay up for anything with a swoosh of jacked up prices.

Speaker 1

In its last quarter, Nike's revenue was down 3% on a currency neutral basis.

Speaker 1

Nike direct revenue fell 7% currency neutral.

Speaker 1

Nike digital was down 9%.

Speaker 1

Converse was down 35%.

Speaker 1

That's catastrophic.

Speaker 1

Their profit their gross margin fell a 130 basis points to 40.2%.

Speaker 1

This is not the Nike investors fell in love with.

Speaker 1

It's not the Nike I knew.

Speaker 1

Now I know that Elliot Hill, the relatively new CEO is trying to turn things around.

Speaker 1

I'm give him a little chance here, but the turns turns take longer than we'd like.

Speaker 1

And part of that is the overall weakness in athleisure.

Speaker 1

It is a depressing situation.

Speaker 1

Maybe this all should have been obvious.

Speaker 1

We're talking about fashion here, and fashion always changes.

Speaker 1

Hey.

Speaker 1

Look at Victoria's Secret.

Speaker 1

Five years ago, they seemed in danger of going bankrupt.

Speaker 1

Took a while, but eventually got hot again.

Speaker 1

The stock came roaring back.

Speaker 1

The younger consumer is not dressed in the same way millennials did when Lululemon was becoming a monster stock.

Speaker 1

Market became oversaturated with light fitting ath light fitting I'm sorry, with tight fitting leisure wear.

Speaker 1

And now younger shoppers wear different styles like denim and baggier clothes.

Speaker 1

Leggings and sweatpants didn't disappear, but they are out of style.

Speaker 1

That's why this is not just the Lululemon issue, an athletic issue, Nike issue.

Speaker 1

COVID pulled demand forward, competition exploded, pricing got harder, styles changed, consumers got more selective, and the companies that used to own the athleisure trend started to look a lot less special.

Speaker 1

Now at these levels, Lululemon is obviously a lot cheaper than it used to be.

Speaker 1

Stock now trades at about 10 times this year's earnings estimate, which is not something you could say about Lou Lemon in the glory days.

Speaker 1

It used to trade at more like 30 times earnings and even higher in its prime years.

Speaker 1

That's what growth can do for you, but nobody pays up for nongrowth.

Speaker 1

Meanwhile, Gap, the parent of Athleta, is even lower, trading at nine times earnings.

Speaker 1

Nike, on the other hand, sells for 24 times earnings.

Speaker 1

That's a little high.

Speaker 1

That's important because it is doing better.

Speaker 1

So, yes, eventually, RULO could get interesting and and if the business turns around a little bit, but it hasn't.

Speaker 1

Cheap alone is not enough, and the estimates are still coming down, the stocks acting like a falling up.

Speaker 1

I spent a huge amount of time talking about what's cheap and what's value in this book because I didn't want people to buy value traps as they call them.

Speaker 1

Same goes for the rest of the group.

Speaker 1

Nike can work if the turnaround becomes visible and the product feels strong again.

Speaker 1

Athletic can work if Gap rebuilds the assortment.

Speaker 1

But right now, the burden of proof is on them.

Speaker 1

The market's not gonna reward athleisure socks just because they used to be great.

Speaker 1

This is a what have you done for me lately kind of business, and lately this industry's only lost you money.

Speaker 1

So here's the bottom line in a very sobering situation.

Speaker 1

Athletesia may not be totally dead, but it's a technical example of what happens when something goes out of style.

Speaker 1

Category went from underpenetrated to overcompetitive.

Speaker 1

The pandemic created a huge pull forward of denim, the of demand.

Speaker 1

Then the consumer changed, and the premium pricing power vanished.

Speaker 1

Lululemon might eventually be worth a look again because it's gotten so much cheaper.

Speaker 1

But I bet that happens at a lower level, maybe much lower.

Speaker 1

For now, there are just a lot better places to go bargain hunting.

Speaker 1

I need to speak to John in Arkansas.

Speaker 1

John.

Speaker 1

Booyah.

Speaker 1

Happy cries to Cramer.

Speaker 1

John great to have you on the line.

Speaker 1

What's happening?

Speaker 1

I'm worried about No.

Speaker 1

You don't need to worry about McDonald's.

Speaker 1

McDonald's, it does have a beef issue.

Speaker 1

Beef is too expensive, but it yields 2.6.

Speaker 1

It's got a great reputation and it sells at 21 times earnings.

Speaker 1

It can get down to $18.90.

Speaker 1

Here's what you do with dollars.

Speaker 1

You bought it by a 100 shares.

Speaker 1

You buy 25 at $2.80.

Speaker 1

This is what I'm doing, by the way, with some of my stocks in my.

Speaker 1

I'm buying really small amounts, way down.

Speaker 1

Get a better basis.

Speaker 1

25 and $2.79, 25 and $2.70, 20 five and two sixty five, and then 50 with if it does get the $2.60, and then you'll have a great basis and you'll be doing just terrifically.

Speaker 1

Look, the athleisure story has changed for the worse, and I think there are better places for you to put your money to work in this market.

Speaker 1

Much more money ahead.

Speaker 1

The S and P won't be adding the mega IPOs to the S and P 500 split these some other indices.

Speaker 1

So could this change the way investors approach index funds?

Speaker 1

I'm sharing where I come down.

Speaker 1

Then it always pays to be diversified.

Speaker 1

And I'm using today's meltdown in the tech sector, worst point decline in Nasdaq history, to highlight just how important that lesson is for you home givers.

Speaker 1

And what it calls rapid fire tonight's session of the Lighting Wrap.

Speaker 1

So stay with Cramer.

Speaker 1

Last night, S and P Dow Jones Indices announced that unlike the Nasdaq one hundred, they won't be changing the rules to allow for the upcoming mega IPOs to quickly join the S and P five hundred.

Speaker 1

Now this is something I talked about before, and I wanna walk you through it because the announcement changes the calculus for SpaceX and the mega IPOs that will follow.

Speaker 1

Remember, always said that a deluge of supply is gonna really kill the bull if we're not careful.

Speaker 1

This is part of the story.

Speaker 1

Remember, Nasdaq Global Industries decided to change the rules to give giant companies like SpaceX and Anthropic and OpenAI that list on the Nasdaq early entry into the Nasdaq 100.

Speaker 1

Basically, if your market capitalization is big enough to be in top 40 of the index, you can join the index within three weeks of your IPO.

Speaker 1

Last week, FTSE Russell, which manages the well known Russell's 3,000, 2,000, and 1,000 indices followed suit, creating its own fast entry process.

Speaker 1

Again, they're making room for the three mega deals.

Speaker 1

Morningstar and MSCI already had fast track rules in place.

Speaker 1

SMB was the last holdout, and a lot of people expected they do the same thing, especially after the company said they were considering it at the end of April.

Speaker 1

But last night, SMB said basically that that it's not gonna change anything.

Speaker 1

Did surprise a lot of people.

Speaker 1

Instead, they're standing on principle.

Speaker 1

When Nasdaq announced its rule changes a few months ago, many cynical voices said they were just doing that in order to win the s the SpaceX listing from here, the New York Stock Exchange, and put themselves in a stronger position to get anthropic in OpenAI.

Speaker 1

I think the cities here are mostly right, but there's another side to the story.

Speaker 1

As Nasdaq chief economist Phil McIntosh articulated in the weekly market maker's newsletter last night, the major indices are supposed to be representative of the market.

Speaker 1

And if a $2,000,000,000,000 company comes public, well, you're not very representative.

Speaker 1

You keep it out of the index.

Speaker 1

Apparently, that argument alone was not enough though to convince the S and P, which crucially doesn't have a stock exchange to run unlike Nasdaq.

Speaker 1

They have no reason to butter up SpaceX.

Speaker 1

They aren't trying to win a listing from another exchange, and they make that very point that these rules exist for a reason.

Speaker 1

So what does it mean?

Speaker 1

What does it mean for you?

Speaker 1

First, I mean, other than what we saw earlier.

Speaker 1

First was SpaceX specifically.

Speaker 1

It needs to wait a year before it can join the S and P 500.

Speaker 1

That means there'll be less forced buying from index funds.

Speaker 1

Previously, we thought they'd shorten the seasoning period to six months, which would have let SpaceX in around December, right, when their first big lockup on insider expiration instead of selling these buyers.

Speaker 1

Now we know SpaceX won't be in the S and P until next June at the earliest, so the lockup expirations are more likely to be to hurt the share price.

Speaker 1

Does that mean we're looking at a bunch of forced index fund buying sometime next summer, right around when the full lockup on insider selling expires, including lockup on Elon Musk?

Speaker 1

别急。

Not so fast.

Speaker 1

The SBM fighter also has a profitability requirement for new entrants.

Speaker 1

Based on the numbers in the SpaceX prospectus, the company's got a long way to go from GAAP profitability.

Speaker 1

And if they plan to keep investing heavily in things like their Starship rocket program, Starlink satellite constellation, and most importantly, AI infrastructure, the company will keep losing money.

Speaker 1

I honestly have no idea how long it'll take for SpaceX to achieve GAAP profitability over a trailing twelve month period, which is what they need to do to join the s p five hundred.

Speaker 1

A lot of requirements there.

Speaker 1

By the way, the same goes for Anthropic and OpenAI.

Speaker 1

For the broader stock market, there are some big time implications here.

Speaker 1

For starters, we're likely to see an even larger divergence between the major equity indices.

Speaker 1

This is something we already deal with every day.

Speaker 1

For example, in today's beatdown, the Nasdaq did much worse than Dow or the S and

Speaker 3

500。

P five

Speaker 1

一百。

hundred.

Speaker 1

Remember, lots of people might want to sell like for like.

Speaker 1

Roaming their old tech for the more, I'd say, go must tech.

Speaker 1

And I think, by the way, that's happening everywhere.

Speaker 1

That's one of the reasons why we're down so much today.

Speaker 1

We often talk about the stay Dow Jones industrial average or the tech heavy Nasdaq, which is more of a subtle way of putting it.

Speaker 1

Essentially, the Dow is a lower risk, lower reward index, and the Nasdaq is a higher risk, higher reward index.

Speaker 1

That's obvious from the numbers.

Speaker 1

The Dow is up 5.8% year to date, but it's only down 1.4% today.

Speaker 1

Nasdaq one hundred is up 140.7% year to date, but it was down a hideous 4.8% today.

Speaker 1

Sell, sell, sell.

Speaker 1

The S and P 500 historically falls somewhere in the middle.

Speaker 1

It's technically is representative of the entire market, but at the same time, it has ton of tech exposure.

Speaker 1

The tech sector officially accounts for 38.6% of the S and P 500, but that's without counting Amazon, Tesla, Alphabet, and Meta platforms.

Speaker 1

The first two are considered consumer discretionary stocks, and the latter two are communications names.

Speaker 1

Throw those in and the S and P is more than 50% tech.

Speaker 1

But with the Nasdaq one hundred changing its rules to make room for SpaceX and its while the S and five hundred stays the same, I think that means the S and P will end up trading more like the Dow Jones industrial average.

Speaker 1

It'll be lower risk, lower reward index compared to the Nasdaq one hundred, which may be really good for younger investors than Nasdaq one hundred, which is gonna it's when you can spend let's say, you put some money in it now, you got your whole life ahead of you, could be a real, real win.

Speaker 1

But even for passive investors who just wanna park their money in an index and forget about it, they'll have to think harder about which index they wanna put the money in.

Speaker 1

Do they want the higher risk reward indexes I for net like the Nasdaq, which I recommend for younger people, or the safer and potentially lower return S and P five hundred, which I recommend for people who are a little bit older?

Speaker 1

If you're parking your money in an index fund, you don't necessarily want high risk, high reward.

Speaker 1

Only younger people should choose that.

Speaker 1

Here's the bottom line.

Speaker 1

Last night, S and P Dow Jones broke from its index keeper brethren and elected not to change its rules to allow these upcoming mega IPOs to quickly join the S and five hundred.

Speaker 1

It's a move that could mean that these stocks do incrementally worse in their first year of trading or longer because they're also keeping the profitability requirement.

Speaker 1

And it means that even if you're a passive index fund investor, you're gonna have to think a lot more about what your risk profile is, and thus which index you wanna be at now that the Nasdaq 100 will be even more turbocharged than ever.

Speaker 1

They might be back after the break.

Speaker 7

Then the Lightning Round is over.

Ski?

Are you ready, ski?

Speaker 1

the Lightning is over.

Speaker 3

Hey, Jim.

Speaker 3

This CEO might be the first candidate for the wall of shame should you decide to bring it back, and I hope you do.

Speaker 3

I listen to conference calls that you suggested over the years.

Speaker 3

This CEO seems to have checked out and offers nothing but excuses, hasn't raised the dividend in over twelve years.

Speaker 3

Let me repeat that.

Speaker 3

Hasn't raised it in over twelve years.

Speaker 3

You've been a supporter of his, yet he chooses to go on other CNBC shows, but not yours.

Speaker 3

Maybe you intimidate him.

Speaker 3

Jim, what on earth is wrong with Starwood and Barry Sternlich?

Speaker 1

Barry's a good guy.

Speaker 1

It's got a lot of properties that are, you know, commercial real estate properties in cities that aren't that good.

Speaker 1

But you know it's not that he doesn't come on my show.

Speaker 1

I'm sure if I called him and asked him to he's a very polite great grateful guy and graceful.

Speaker 1

But no it's not been a good stock.

Speaker 1

And what can I say?

Speaker 1

I have not been recommending it.

Speaker 1

That's the best thing I can say about it.

Speaker 1

Let's go to Alex in Oregon.

Speaker 1

Alex.

Speaker 7

Thanks Jim for taking my call.

Speaker 7

Of course, stock that spun off

Speaker 8

from Fortis about a year ago.

Speaker 8

They just had a great quarter, not some buyback.

Speaker 8

They operate in the aerospace utility and semiconductor testing equipment space.

Speaker 8

I'm calling about Ariel Ralliant.

Speaker 1

That is a good company.

Speaker 1

But you know what?

Speaker 1

It's going parabolic.

Speaker 1

The stock's going parabolic.

Speaker 1

And I've got to tell you, the show's dedicated idea of you don't seek parabolas right now.

Speaker 1

Just don't seek them.

Speaker 1

How about you go to Sam Massachusetts.

Speaker 1

Sam.

Speaker 6

Jim got an interesting one for you.

Speaker 3

So everyone knows BorgWarner for the custom electric drivetrain.

Speaker 3

You know the engine components that they make

Speaker 6

but the stock is in a ten

Speaker 3

year breakout and that's because of a pivot and a gas turbine.

Speaker 3

I'm curious what you think about BorgWarner given the need for these gas powered turbines that they're going to be.

Speaker 1

It's been an absolute winner, but again, it's it's another parabola stock.

Speaker 1

So what will happen is it's a 72, it could be at 60 in a heartbeat and that's when we're gonna have to look at it.

Speaker 1

Let's go to sunshine in Florida.

This is sunshine from Florida.

Speaker 1

I'm a school

Speaker 2

counselor, a second time caller and an investor by night.

Speaker 2

Before I ask my question, I just wanna thank you.

Speaker 2

I recently read your new book, how to make money in any market, and I've learned so much from you.

Speaker 2

Oh, counselor, I truly appreciate appreciate great teachers.

Speaker 2

My late mother was an incredible teacher, and you've been one for countless investors.

Speaker 2

Oh, thank you.

Speaker 2

Thank you, John.

Speaker 2

You're welcome.

Speaker 2

My question is about Reddit, ticker RDDT.

Speaker 2

Is it a buy, sell, or I

Speaker 1

它。

it.

Speaker 1

I like it.

Speaker 1

I think it's got a very very good unique property but you can't buy it all at once because it sells at 29 times earnings.

Speaker 1

Thank you for putting me in the league with your mom.

Speaker 1

That is terrific.

Speaker 1

I someone stopped me in the street and said you know I read your book it's filled with education.

Speaker 1

That's what it was.

Speaker 1

That's what it is.

Speaker 1

And you got that too.

Speaker 1

And I really appreciate it.

Speaker 1

But we're going to buy Reddit very slowly not aggressively.

Speaker 1

I need to go to Jared New Jersey.

Speaker 1

Jared.

Speaker 6

Hey Jim good afternoon.

Speaker 6

Thanks for taking my call.

Speaker 4

好的。

All right.

Speaker 6

Got a question for you.

Speaker 6

I'm working towards building a high yield dividend portfolio.

Speaker 6

I love the MLPs, you know, energy transfer and so on, but too heavily concentrated, I need to start diversifying a little bit.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 6

A company I'm looking at in the private credit space, currently trading about 20% discount to net asset value.

Speaker 6

It's trading slightly above its five year high.

Speaker 6

Paids about 11% annual yield.

Speaker 6

Company is OBDC, Blue Owl Capital Corporation.

Speaker 1

Blue Owl Capital.

Speaker 1

That's their well, I gotta tell you, it's their business development company.

Speaker 1

I've not recommended anybody's business development company.

Speaker 1

I can't start doing it now.

Speaker 1

I'm sorry.

Speaker 1

I don't know what they own and I don't want to.

Speaker 1

That's how bad these things have been.

Speaker 1

Maybe this is the exception, but I'm not gonna put my head in that lion's den.

Speaker 1

And that, ladies and conclusion of the lightning round.

Speaker 0

The lightning round is sponsored by Charles Schwab.

Speaker 1

Not that long ago, we had a CBC investing club meeting.

Speaker 1

You know, that monthly thing we do?

Speaker 1

I was lamenting that bad managers like to throw all caution to win and just go with whatever's really hot.

Speaker 1

What was hot, of course, was the data center.

Speaker 1

The stocks you know, can do anything.

Speaker 1

It helps make the era of artificial intelligence work.

Speaker 1

Now you can make good money for a while if you go all in on what's hot, but I never do it because I know it'll eventually blow up in your face.

Speaker 1

The house of pain.

Speaker 1

That's why we run a diversified fund for the investing club.

Speaker 1

When you're diversified at any given moment, you're gonna own some losers though, or at least some stocks that aren't working.

Speaker 1

These stocks will lag while the data center roars, but they preserve your sanity when you get a tsunami like sell off in the hottest stocks out there.

Speaker 1

Well, the tsunami of data center selling is here.

Speaker 1

And today's the day where I'm kinda patting myself on the back for keeping the charitable trust diversified, not going all in on the data center complex.

Speaker 1

That's today's the day when we're grateful for our Johnson and Johnson position.

Speaker 1

Great new drug profits.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Triple a balance sheet better than United States.

Speaker 1

Today's the day that Procter and Gamble sure plays well in the trust.

Speaker 1

没错。

Sure.

Speaker 1

It's not like doing not doing as well as we'd like, but that means nothing new in this tape.

Speaker 1

Today's the day when I'm proud that we held on to our FedEx Freight, the new spin off that could go from a decent less than truckload play into one of the best operators in the world.

Speaker 1

Remember, we don't care what kind of company makes the money.

Speaker 1

Doesn't have to be a data center moneymaker.

Speaker 1

The other side of the equation, alright.

Speaker 1

Well, let's talk about parabolas.

Speaker 1

Now I have been warning you endlessly to the point you're probably sick about hearing about what happens to stocks that make parabolic moves.

Speaker 1

If it goes up practically in a straight line, then eventually it's gonna come down in a straight line.

Speaker 1

In fact, they tend to come down a lot faster than when they went up.

Speaker 1

I know club members get confused when we trim some of the winners, but we have no choice.

Speaker 1

What goes up must come down twice as fast, if not as faster.

Speaker 1

So if you don't take something off the table, little schnitzel as I call it, well, you could give the whole thing back.

Speaker 1

Now when you're up nine weeks straight, you start taking a lot of things for granted.

Speaker 1

Take Arm Hole.

Speaker 1

It's one of our favorite stocks.

Speaker 1

Been a huge winner for the Travel Trust, so we sold some at $3.10, but then it went up to 400.

Speaker 1

We lost discipline though, and we didn't do any more selling.

Speaker 1

That was bad.

Speaker 1

Just plain and simple.

Speaker 1

Mesmerized, hypnotized, no.

Speaker 1

We just didn't own enough of the arm to start with.

Speaker 1

It would be too small a matter if we sold more.

Speaker 1

But it sure feels like it mattered today with arm down more than 12%.

Speaker 1

I wish I had kicked it out altogether.

Speaker 1

I'll tell you though, the decline has been so heavy and almost to me artificial.

Speaker 1

People are dumping these stocks to raise money for make room for SpaceX that it might be too late to sell some of the stocks even if they think they're selling could go on until all the hyperscalers raise the money they need, and that's gonna make for an ugly tape.

Speaker 1

We gotta get used to it.

Speaker 1

See the lessons clear, people.

Speaker 1

The PNGs and the J and Js in your portfolio allow you to safely own the techs.

Speaker 1

They're kind of like permits.

Speaker 1

But if you don't take something off the table of the techs when you're up big, I think you're gonna live to regret it.

Speaker 1

I'm not saying we handled this move perfectly from the trust, far from it.

Speaker 1

I'm saying that despite this sell off, I'm not kicking myself.

Speaker 1

I did what was right, and I it paid off for my travel trust, and hopefully, it paid off for club members alike.

Speaker 1

Like I said, there's always a bull market somewhere, and I promise to start to find just for you right here on Mid Money.
