Speaker 4

The tech sector has found its savior, and his name is Andy Jassy, the CEO of Amazon.

Speaker 4

Last week on his conference call, he patiently explained the economics of the data center and how patient shareholders could be rewarded with a huge return.

Speaker 4

One that could happen sooner than people think.

Speaker 4

See, until Jesse spoke, the market seemed highly skeptical of how these mega cap tech companies were spending their money.

Speaker 4

Because of him, I don't think that's anymore.

Speaker 4

It's only the case, which is why we could roar today with the Dow gaining 693 points as we jumping 1.4% in the Nasdaq poll voting 2.13%.

Speaker 4

Regular viewers of this show or anyone in the CNBC investing club would know that I've been waiting months for Amazon to give us line of sight into something that can justify why they're spending so much money building all these data centers.

Speaker 4

Amazon's a large position in my chapel trust.

Speaker 4

So I wanna know if there's really a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Speaker 4

I think I finally got through to them.

Speaker 4

As Jassy put it, at this level of spend and hire, we have clear line of sight to strong financial returns, end quote.

Speaker 4

All the money he's putting toward the data center may not be even enough to capitalize on the opportunity.

Speaker 4

Even if the astronomical amount of $220,000,000,000 in capital expenditures, up from 200,000,000,000 previously, Jassy says, quote, we will not have enough capacity to meet all the demand we have in 2026, And I believe this dynamic will also be true in 2027 too.

Speaker 4

In fact, the demand we already have for 2028 is striking.

Speaker 4

House of pleasure.

Speaker 4

Holy cow.

Speaker 4

That word striking changed a lot of people's minds.

Speaker 4

As did his statement that Amazon Web Services could be a trillion dollar business now that it's augmented by AI.

Speaker 4

Trillion dollars.

Speaker 4

I know that many investors have been befuddled by Amazon's seemingly reckless decision to spend itself into having negative cash flow.

Speaker 4

But you have to remember that this is not the first time Jassy's had to spend more than Amazon took in initially in order to hit it big.

Speaker 4

Before placing founder Jeff Bezos as CEO in 2021, Jassy led the creation of Amazon Web Services, their cloud infrastructure division that's so lucrative.

Speaker 4

The cloud unit has now become Amazon's most profitable business, far surpassing Amazon Prime.

Speaker 4

Jassy thinks that the battle for returns from AI will come faster than returns from the web services business did.

Speaker 4

Amazing.

Speaker 4

We sometimes forget how many years Amazon spent losing money in order to achieve its dominant position.

Speaker 4

Jassy knows from experience that Amazon has to go out on a limb periodically to keep the crowd.

Speaker 4

This is the limb that must be revisited.

Speaker 4

I found it refreshing to hear a breakdown of where the AI spending goes with Jassy explaining again, patiently that there are two major investments in a data center.

Speaker 4

The first is the construction of the data center building.

Speaker 4

And the second is the compute, which consists of servers and networking gear that go under the roof.

Speaker 4

Here's how he put it.

Speaker 4

Quote, once a data center opens with servers plugged in, we start generating significant revenue right away and then get to monetize these data centers for thirty plus years without having to spend that startup capital again, end quote.

Speaker 4

Apparently, it takes a little less than three years to break even on the investment in service and networking gear, and then it's pure profit for another two to three years.

Speaker 4

Then they get to do the same cycle another four or five times.

Speaker 4

No wonder the hyperscalers are spending like crazy.

Speaker 4

That is a terrific investment.

Speaker 4

They'd be nuts not to do it.

Speaker 4

That's how I felt after this call.

Speaker 4

It was Jassy's calm, thoughtful presentation that allowed him to raise his capex budget 200,000,000,000 to $220,000,000,000 to 220,000,000,000 and still have Amazon stock soar to its biggest one day gain in over a decade.

Speaker 4

Even though he raised the CapEx 20,000,000,000, this stock jumped another 12 points and changed again today, and now has joined the rarefied $3,000,000,000,000 club along with NVIDIA, Alpha, Apple, and Microsoft.

Speaker 4

Now I want you to contrast Amazon's commentary with Google parent, Alphabet.

Speaker 4

Back on July 22, Alphabet raised its CapEx guidance by a similar amount or up to $15,000,000,000 to a range of 195 to 205,000,000,000.

Speaker 4

In response, the stock had its third worst day in the past two years.

Speaker 4

Despite liking the company very much, I made clear to club members that I was disappointed now if it's conference call.

Speaker 4

They they simply didn't explain why they'd be willing to jeopardize their once pristine balance sheet on AI.

Speaker 4

Now do not get me wrong.

Speaker 4

I was indeed blown away, blown away by the 82% growth in Google's cloud business and said as much last week to you after I interviewed Thomas Curry who runs that business.

Speaker 4

But they didn't hold your hand on the like Amazon.

Speaker 4

不。

No.

Speaker 4

Maybe they didn't think it was their job.

Speaker 4

Maybe it isn't their job, but boy, I sure needed it.

Speaker 4

A descent into negative free cash flow is something that needs to be explained in-depth people, but Alpha was almost glib about it.

Speaker 4

I believe the same numbers explained differently would have sent that stock higher, not lower.

Speaker 4

In the end though, Amazon came to the rescue.

Speaker 4

Andy Jassy's calm commentary was a rising tide, and it lifted all boats, including Alpha, The stock is now trading above where it was when the company did its big fundraise not that long ago at $355 a share.

Speaker 4

It closed up $17 today.

Speaker 4

At the same time, Microsoft deserves a lot a lot of credit for reporting a blowout quarter last Wednesday night.

Speaker 4

Only is Microsoft free cash flow positive despite its massive spending, they're doing much better on the front end, integrating their Copilot AI assistant into the mix.

Speaker 4

I did not know this.

Speaker 4

Plus, Microsoft's Azure cloud business like Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services is totally on fire.

Speaker 4

The stock has continued to send pretty much in a straight line.

Speaker 4

Glad we held order for the Chapel Trust even when Wall Street was highly skeptical.

Speaker 4

That stock closed up almost $23.

Speaker 4

The toughest one to follow, my former favorite.

Speaker 4

It's just hard to swallow this one.

Speaker 4

Get this, Meta.

Speaker 4

Meta。

Meta.

Speaker 4

The massive spend explanation here was the weakest.

Speaker 4

In fact, was nonexistent.

Speaker 4

Meta's participating in the huge data center build out, but there's no cloud service business to help monetize that investment.

Speaker 4

There've been chatter that the company might offer a web service business, but it seems like CEO Mark Zuckerberg wasn't sure whether Meta should use the massive compute it's building for itself or rent it out to others.

Speaker 4

Now I was shocked.

Speaker 4

I was disappointed.

Speaker 4

I was disappointed that Meta didn't seem to have a plan.

Speaker 4

I came into the conference call expecting great things, including some projections of how quickly they could recoup their costs.

Speaker 4

I got none.

Speaker 4

Stocks beat down told me that I was not alone.

Speaker 4

I guess you can't make up the tens of billions lost just by selling souped up Ray Bans.

Speaker 4

Still, Meta also benefit from the Amazon halo, and the stock rallied more than $33 or 6% today.

Speaker 4

Not all is forgiven though.

Speaker 4

It's still $50 below, a little bit more where it was just a couple of weeks ago.

Speaker 4

But you never know.

Speaker 4

Maybe meta will hear the thunder.

Speaker 4

Maybe they reveal a strategy of its own in the not too distant future.

Speaker 4

One more beneficiary, even as Amazon makes its own chips for the data center, did mention his partnership with Nvidia.

Speaker 4

That pushed chatter that there's very strong demand for Nvidia chips.

Speaker 4

I I didn't know that was revelatory.

Speaker 4

Led the stock of the biggest company in the world to an almost $6 gain or 2.93%, and that puts it back above the $5,000,000,000,000 market cap level.

Speaker 4

Apple itself, well, these hyperscalers have bid up the price of some of the most common chips to heights that Apple said will hurt sales going forward.

Speaker 4

But that's a bigger discussion than I can go over here.

Speaker 4

And it's one that I think actually could keep a little on Apple stock for some time unless a new source of chips gets revealed that I can't think of.

Speaker 4

The bottom line, Thanks to Amazon, and yes, to a lesser extent Microsoft, the AI data center trade is back on because we finally know how these investments will actually help the hyperscalers make money.

Speaker 4

For me, it's in Jassy we trust, and we should thank him for explaining why spending hundreds of billions of dollars may be a pittance versus what shareholders can make holding on to his stock and perhaps the others too.

Speaker 4

Let's go to Robert in New York.

Speaker 4

Robert.

Speaker 5

Hey, Jim.

Speaker 5

Nice to thank you.

Speaker 5

Thank you for taking my call.

Speaker 5

I'm calling about Intuit.

Speaker 5

I'm losing about 50% in my IRA, so I haven't sold it.

Speaker 5

And I'm just wondering, the fundamentals seem good to me.

Speaker 5

So I don't know why the stock is down and also why it hasn't been a takeover candidate.

Speaker 4

Well, I don't know about takeover candidate, but but when came on the show, I thought he made a very good case that there are many things that are going well.

Speaker 4

People feel somehow that AI is gonna become the way that people do their taxes.

Speaker 4

I am with him at this at this price.

Speaker 4

At $318, I think the stock is gonna rally.

Speaker 4

Think I there's been a major short rate against this company.

Speaker 4

A lot of people say negative things.

Speaker 4

I can't prove the negatives.

Speaker 4

I think you're right.

Speaker 4

I think Robert from New York is smarter than all these hotshot hedge funds tell me until it's going to zero.

Speaker 4

Let's go to Roger in Florida, please.

Speaker 4

I have a good position on it.

Speaker 6

I bought it at a low price, and I'm still holding onto it.

Speaker 6

So should I know?

Speaker 6

Speaker 4

I have a a guy who who writes with me, Matt Horween, and we were talking, discussing this this weekend.

Speaker 4

He's been my colleague for twenty five years.

Speaker 4

And we both think that perhaps Oracle's bottom.

Speaker 4

Now I don't wanna go out on him and say it definitely is bottom because if something happens and people replay the tape over and over again, the stock acts better.

Speaker 4

I think it does matter.

Speaker 4

I I think that you should hold on to it.

Speaker 4

I don't believe that their investment grade right now, I their credit still very good.

Speaker 4

And I know this, like many other stocks have been beaten down and perhaps overly beaten down.

Speaker 4

I think the stock can head higher.

Speaker 4

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 4

Today, Amazon and Microsoft turned the AI data center trade back on.

Speaker 4

Let's see if it can keep running.

Speaker 4

And this is all just a carryover from last week.

Speaker 4

Oh, man.

Speaker 4

Money tonight, next power has transformed its solar business as it grows its data center pipeline.

Speaker 4

But is that hurt or help the stock lately?

Speaker 4

I'm checking in on the sunny side of the things with the CEO who's gonna be on the show for the first time in a little bit.

Speaker 4

Then July was a rough month for stocks.

Speaker 4

So what could we learn from the must action?

Speaker 4

I'm taking a look at the winners and the losers.

Speaker 4

Maybe they've moved into electrical systems, inverters, battery storage and all sorts of solutions to help customers generate and deliver consistent electricity.

Speaker 4

Dan, it's been way too long.

Speaker 4

Many things have changed, including the name of the company.

Speaker 4

If you can just give us some of the narrative of what's changed, I think people will understand why I'm so excited to have you back on.

Speaker 8

Well, Jim, thanks for having us back on the program.

Speaker 8

You had us on a few years ago.

Speaker 8

We had it was shortly after our IPO.

Speaker 8

Our backlog was only about 2,000,000,000.

Speaker 8

Today, it's well over 5,500,000,000.

Speaker 8

What we've done is we've changed the name and the folks on the company from Next Tracker, where we had two products a few years ago to Next Power.

Speaker 8

And we're basically doing everything in a solar and battery power plant except making the solar panel.

Speaker 8

And so that's really helped us satisfy global demand where solar has been the dominant form of new power added grids around the world.

Speaker 4

I think it's important to point out, it's in the news today, you you're not in the commodity stuff.

Speaker 4

The actual panels is not where you wanna be because it doesn't have enough intellectual property.

Speaker 4

One by one, you have answered what your clients have wanted, and it has worked.

Speaker 4

Even if some of the analysts might be afraid that you've done too many acquisitions, it's something you're quite good at.

Speaker 8

Well, you know, we have a proven track record of acquiring talent, intellectual property, and then scaling those businesses and generating profit.

Speaker 8

The first acquisition we did way back was a machine learning company, and we created a whole software business called TrueCapture.

Speaker 8

And that's helped these solar power plants generate that much more energy proven.

Speaker 8

The other acquisitions we've done over the last few years are already generating revenue, profit for the company.

Speaker 8

What's really the big latest thing, Jim, is we've gone from being a solar focused company to now having battery storage and power electronics.

Speaker 8

So we're making these critical DC to AC inverters.

Speaker 8

We're doing batteries.

Speaker 8

And what that's done is solar's really transitioned from an intermittent resource to a firm resource and something that is actually helping varying loads like data centers stay online reliably without waiting for long term grid expansions.

Speaker 4

And I'm glad you mentioned data center.

Speaker 4

I know everyone's focused on it, maybe too focused on it, but if you can be base load or if you can be less intermittent, as you said, you're terrific back up to whatever, say natural gas.

Speaker 4

Because people want back up to be solar.

Speaker 4

We don't want it to be diesel.

Speaker 4

We want something clean.

Speaker 4

And I think there's a lot of forgetfulness about clean energy when it comes to the data center as if it doesn't matter anymore.

Speaker 8

Well, Jim, solar is a lot more than clean.

Speaker 8

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 8

It's clean, but it's also lower cost, available now, and much lower risk than anything that uses a fossil fuel or uranium.

Speaker 8

And let me explain what's happening right now.

Speaker 8

We just closed two weeks ago a battery storage company called Prevalon.

Speaker 8

We're in the middle of fulfilling a tier one data center where there's over 1.3 gigawatts of power that's connected right up front of where the data center is.

Speaker 8

And solar and batteries can do things that gas can't.

Speaker 8

Gas is not fast enough to follow these data center loads that change really quickly.

Speaker 8

A battery with modern power electronics is much more responsive and can work in conjunction with a limited grid capacity to help these data centers and other critical loads stay online, and people want it now.

Speaker 8

They don't wanna wait four or five years.

Speaker 8

And so what we're doing is generating clean energy, yes, at lower risk and lower cost, yes, but it's also available now.

Speaker 8

Now I just wanna back up for a second.

Speaker 8

If you look at let's start with The United States.

Speaker 8

This year to date, the first February of this year, solar and battery delivered 91% of the new power generation capacity brought online because of these merits.

Speaker 8

Next Power

Next Power, we're also serving another 50 countries around the world, and we're seeing solar and and battery storage being the largest source of new power in most places around the world.

Speaker 8

So it it's we're really checking all the boxes, and the clean attribute is great.

Speaker 8

People want clean air and clean water, but it's lower cost, available now, scaling, and lower risk than any other way to generate power.

Speaker 4

Well, when I was on your call, what I was astonished by, I thought the battery life, I think it's two hours.

Speaker 4

But you're talking about six, maybe going to even longer, which then suddenly creates a level of practicality that I think most people weren't aware of.

Speaker 8

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 8

I wanna give you a sense of scale.

Speaker 8

This is not some science experiment.

Speaker 8

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 8

So our company, Next Power, first of all, let's just take stock.

Speaker 8

We've delivered over a 160 gigawatts.

Speaker 8

That's more than the peak load of Texas, which is 90 gigawatts, and California, which is 40 gigawatts combined.

Speaker 8

So a company we founded for a few million dollars twelve years ago has done more than California and Texas combined.

Speaker 8

Now what hasn't happened in the last few years in Texas and California, the two largest grids in the country, you haven't heard about blackouts or brownouts or powers going out.

Speaker 8

Why is that?

Speaker 8

It's because batteries are at huge scale in Texas, California, and and increasingly around the world.

Speaker 8

There's over 15 gigawatts of batteries operating in Texas and California, and that's really helping keep the lights on.

Speaker 8

So what's happening, the low cost excess solar power during the day is charging the batteries, and those batteries are being discharged well into the evening.

Speaker 8

Batteries a few years ago were one hour, then they went to two hour, then four hour.

Speaker 8

Now we're seeing six hours and eight hours.

Speaker 8

And so now you've got a very reliable system that's much more responsive than a rotating machine to generate power to the grid.

Speaker 8

And so I really think I mean, the use cases now are growing exponentially because who would have thought, you know, these this whole data center thing would be such a major consumer of energy in the grid and and and driving so much demand growth.

Speaker 8

So I think we're gonna see increasing use cases for storage battery storage powered by low cost renewables like solar.

Speaker 4

Well, Dan, we're gonna have to wrap things up, but you were a visionary when you said who thought this.

Speaker 4

All I know is when you're on last, you said our grid is not in good shape, and it can't handle new growth.

Speaker 4

And boy, did we ever have new growth.

Speaker 4

So congratulations to you for being a visionary.

Speaker 4

There's a paper in 1991 where you actually talk about this.

Speaker 4

So you're really not giving yourself enough credit.

Speaker 4

I looked it up.

Speaker 4

You're very much a visionary for solar for years.

Speaker 8

Jim.

Speaker 8

Jim, I wanna give some love back to you.

Speaker 8

You were visionary.

Speaker 8

You called early a few years ago that Next Power was gonna grow grow, and we did.

Speaker 8

We accomplished that.

Speaker 8

We we really got it done.

Speaker 8

We've we're we're about meeting and beating expectations.

Speaker 8

This is the new opportunity for folks to come in, in the company because we've launched these new businesses.

Speaker 4

Couldn't have

Speaker 8

been more.

Speaker 8

Electronics with the battery, and solar's gonna power on.

Speaker 8

July was a rough month.

Speaker 4

Even though the Dow and the S and were basically flat, the tech heavy Nasdaq one hundred tumbled 6.6% as the AI data center stocks got obliterated and money rotated into the rest of the market.

Speaker 4

After the war with the ram flared up again, oil prices spiked, which is why the energy sector rallied 12.5% last month.

Speaker 4

The financials were up 6%, not bad, followed by real estate up 2.5%, health care up 2.2%, and consumer staples up 1.9%.

Speaker 4

When you look at the biggest winners, many of them were the former victims of AI displacement.

Speaker 4

The AI displacement trade, we call it.

Speaker 4

The best performers versus were Cognizant Tech and Accenture, two tech consulting firms that were up nearly 4333% respectively.

These two have spent years drifting lower as Wall Street assumes they've lost their mojo in the age of Claude and Chatty PT.

Speaker 4

Look, I never believed wholeheartedly in that thesis, but it never seemed to matter whether I believed it or not.

Speaker 4

Just last month, Cognizant announced an expanded partnership with and Accenture unveiled a whole suite of Vagintic AI solutions that it's selling in combination with Google Cloud.

Speaker 4

Sound like they're oblivious.

Speaker 4

In the end, it's all about sentiment though.

Speaker 4

When Accenture reported not so hot quarter in June, its stock got clobbered and took Cogsworth down with it.

Speaker 4

Then in late July, Cogsworth reported a very similar set of numbers, and both stocks roared.

Speaker 4

Now I would have seen better numbers from these two before they pound the table.

Speaker 4

But if they can stabilize the results, the stocks are very cheap.

Speaker 4

Third best performing the s p five, another one in July, another one shocker, PayPal.

Speaker 4

That's up 32.5%.

Speaker 4

Now while the company's certainly doing much better under new CEO Enrique Lawyers than his previous CEO, the stock roared because PayPal apparently got a a takeover overture from the giant private fintech company called Stripe with the backing of a private equity firm.

Speaker 4

Now they they haven't agreed to anything, but it hasn't been shot down.

Speaker 4

Quizzical.

Speaker 4

Fourth best performer in July was Workday, up 31%.

Speaker 4

Now this is an enterprise software stock that's also been hammered by the AI displacement trade and still down nearly 50% from its peak in early twenty twenty four.

Speaker 4

Now we know ServiceNow reported and roared when we saw those new numbers.

Speaker 4

It was just a couple weeks ago.

Speaker 4

Workday could do the same thing if his numbers impress us later this month.

Speaker 4

In fifth place was a company called Willis Towers Watson.

Speaker 4

I never talk about these guys.

Speaker 4

This is a major commercial insurance brokerage and employee benefits consultant.

Speaker 4

28.5% gain in July.

Speaker 4

To the company's credit, they had a good report last week, but I think this one's mostly about interest rates.

Speaker 4

The entire insurance sector got a lot more interesting when rates go higher.

Speaker 4

They did beat the most recent sales and earnings estimates, so I didn't give them that credit.

Speaker 4

Now in sixth place, there's the Cboe global market.

Speaker 4

就是CBOE。

That's CBOE.

Speaker 4

Speaker 4

Cboe also reported a solid quarter last Friday, giving its stock one more leg higher.

Speaker 4

I don't think it's expensive.

Speaker 4

In seventh place, Phillips sixty six was up 25%.

Speaker 4

Now I am surprised that it is the only oil refiner in the top 10 because they're all on fire right now.

Speaker 4

Phillips sixty six reports on Wednesday based on what we heard from refining giant Valero last thursday.

Speaker 4

I feel pretty darn confident that this quarter from Phillips sixty six will be excellent.

Speaker 4

Eighth place, Microsoft of 24.6% with most of that gain coming after the company reported blog quarter last Wednesday night.

Speaker 4

Speaker 4

Speaker 4

The ninth best performer HP Inc up more than 24%.

Speaker 4

That'll clue Catalyst.

Speaker 4

We know HP has badly lagged Dell for the past couple of years because HP's consumer play.

Speaker 4

Dell has tons of data center exposure.

Speaker 4

But in July, Dell was down about 6% while HP roared.

Speaker 4

Long term, though, I'd still rather own Dell.

Speaker 4

Finally, number 10 was Dexcom.

Speaker 4

Speaker 4

MedTech stocks had been out of favor for a while, but that group caught fire as investors searched for tech growth away from the AI data center complex in the month of July.

Speaker 4

Plus, tech come reported while quarter last week, I I just wish the stock would be cheaper.

Speaker 4

Those are the winners.

Speaker 4

How about the losers where the opportunities are?

Speaker 4

Generac, they make backup power generations.

Speaker 4

No stranger to the show.

Speaker 4

They've got a big data center business.

Speaker 4

Stock is down more than 32%.

Speaker 4

Flex,

Flex, the ninth worst performer down almost 30%.

Speaker 4

They're one of the big tech hardware manufacturers.

Speaker 4

Of course, late last month, we found out that at least some of this sell off had to do with the near collapse.

Speaker 4

Some people say total collapse, but it's all the way you look at it.

Speaker 4

All the hedge fund situational awareness LP that had been printing big gains for most of the past two years, got out got out over its skis, used too much leverage.

Speaker 4

They got in trouble when many of the AI stocks at own pulled back from their highs.

Speaker 4

At the same time, they've been shorting many enterprise software stocks and suddenly got a boost.

Speaker 4

你看,他们平仓了, boom(砰的一声/一下子)。

You see, they unwound, boom.

Speaker 4

Now that situational awareness has sold almost all of its public holdings.

Speaker 4

There's a temptation to give it all clear and say that most of the AI stocks will bounce right back.

Speaker 4

I get that.

Speaker 4

But these AI data center plays will still need to regain their momentum.

Speaker 4

Remember, there are some serious issues here away from just the core business.

Speaker 4

The spike in interest rates hurt them.

Speaker 4

The emergence of new open source AI models, they get threatened pricing power for the leading AI labs.

Speaker 4

Those are real headwinds.

Speaker 4

Here's the bottom line.

Speaker 4

On the surface, July was a calm month, but when you look at the disparate performances of the major sectors, it was brutal.

Speaker 4

As we head toward the final months of the year, yeah, we are that late in the year.

Speaker 4

The key question is whether these humble AI stocks can stabilize, regain their momentum, and even start rallying it.

Speaker 4

Hopefully, a little less dramatically and a little more stair step.

Speaker 4

Remember, the parabolic moves that they had always spell trouble no matter how good the companies may actually be doing.

Speaker 4

Let's take calls.

Speaker 4

Let's start with Jill in Michigan.

Speaker 4

Jill.

Speaker 1

Hi, Jim.

Speaker 1

How are you tonight?

Speaker 4

I am good, Jill.

Speaker 4

How about you?

Speaker 1

I'm doing great.

Speaker 1

I'm calling you about Palo Alto Networks.

Speaker 4

Oh, jeez.

Speaker 4

About Nikesh Arora, Palo Alto.

Speaker 4

It's just it was up huge today.

Speaker 4

It deserves that Paolo Alto and CrowdStrike are really the companies that are going to protect us from this next wave of Vagintic A.

Speaker 4

I.

Speaker 4

Palo Alto,

Paolo Alto I think the cash is good.

Speaker 4

And hey I saw the cash play a little golf.

Speaker 4

He's pretty good at golf too.

Speaker 4

You never know.

Speaker 4

The guy can be even triple threat.

Speaker 4

And who else knows what else he's got up to.

Speaker 4

But I like Palo Alto.

Speaker 4

We own him for the trust.

Speaker 4

现在。

Now.

Speaker 4

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 4

Going to the rest of the year, I'll be curious to see if the AI stocks can make up for this sour July performance.

Speaker 4

I think the market will be too much more made money at putting my Swiss with picking bows.

Speaker 4

Then lots of stocks trade alongside each other oftentimes for no reason at all.

Speaker 4

I'm explaining why and how you can take advantage of the action yourself.

Speaker 4

And all your calls rapid fire tonight's edition of the Lightning Round.

Speaker 4

So stay with Cramer.

Speaker 4

Today, I wanna check-in one of the most surprising turnaround stories out there, Pindi Bose.

Speaker 4

It's a company that's best known for mail meters equipment that helps offices send postage.

Speaker 4

Business has been challenged by the rise of digitization.

Speaker 4

But a couple years ago, an activist hedge fund got involved with the story, forcing Pitney Bowes to cut costs and get into new businesses.

Speaker 4

In the spring of last year, the leader of that activist hedge fund, Kurt Wolfe, was named CEO.

Speaker 4

By the time I spoke with Wolfe last August, the stock had already had a great run, making it back to $12 and change at the time.

Speaker 4

He argued that the comeback still had legs.

Speaker 4

Now nearly a year later, the stock's at 18 and change, meaning he was dead right.

Speaker 4

So can it keep running?

Speaker 4

Let's take a close look with Kurt Wolpey.

Speaker 4

He's the CEO of Pitney Bowes to fight after.

Speaker 4

Welcome back to Mad Money.

Speaker 10

Thank you for having me again, Jim.

Speaker 4

Well, Kurt, you were very earnest talking about what could happen.

Speaker 4

I've been skeptical because Pitney Bowes is a story name that had obviously been challenged by by email, by lots of voice.

Speaker 4

But you had a lot of creative ways to be able to do things.

Speaker 4

But at the same time, you also recognize the balance sheet's gotta be fixed.

Speaker 4

And you knew that there was a lot of cash.

Speaker 4

You could buy back stock.

Speaker 4

Tell us the process of what you did and where you are now.

Speaker 10

Yeah, absolutely Jim.

Speaker 10

So first off, think it's helpful to step back and talk about Pitney Bowes.

Speaker 10

We have three businesses.

Speaker 10

Our presort business, we are the dominant player in mail sortation.

Speaker 10

Our SendTech business, We have about 60 to 70% market share of the mail meter industry.

Speaker 10

We're also a leader in the shipping software space.

Speaker 10

Finally, have a bank.

Speaker 10

We provide financial services and solutions to our roughly 500,000 customers.

Speaker 10

So that's, you know, essentially the business in a nutshell.

Speaker 10

As far as what we've done to turn things around, as you said, we've addressed, you know, balance sheet issues.

Speaker 10

We recently got a double b minus rating from Fitch.

Speaker 10

We bought back a lot of stock and we've improved.

Speaker 4

Well, think your balance sheet is perfect now.

Speaker 10

Thank you.

Speaker 10

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 10

We don't have any maturities now until

Speaker 4

Darts of '29?

Speaker 10

'29.

Speaker 10

没错。

Absolutely.

Speaker 4

So let me I've mentioned to you that at the end of June, you announced that you're initiating the second phase of of the phase of the strategic review process.

Speaker 4

Bring us up to date what's going on there.

Speaker 10

Yeah, so this is just logical next step.

Speaker 10

We spent the last year fixing the business.

Speaker 10

So we addressed improving efficiency of the company, instilling a culture of continuous improvement.

Speaker 10

And we really identified a lot of avenues for growth for the company.

Speaker 10

As as a next step, we did a lot of internal internal searching and developing.

Speaker 10

And now what we're doing is we're looking external to the company.

Speaker 10

What can we do to deliver more value for our shareholders?

Speaker 4

Well, talk to me about what kind of real growth you can have.

Speaker 4

Is that a reasonable goal?

Speaker 10

Absolutely.

Speaker 10

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 10

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 10

So, yeah, I would just point to two areas of our business.

Speaker 10

Shipping software is a growing space as you know, with Amazon and e commerce shipping is growing.

Speaker 10

So that's a great opportunity.

Speaker 10

你想

You wanna

Speaker 4

route things to what the most advantageous way at that moment, which to me is fantastic for a small medium sized business.

Speaker 4

You're kind of a must.

Speaker 10

Absolutely.

Speaker 10

Completely agree.

Speaker 10

And then also our bank is another great opportunity, an area for opportunity.

Speaker 10

We have, as you talked about small mid sized businesses, we have roughly 500,000 clients.

Speaker 10

All have banking needs.

Speaker 10

We're currently providing some of their banking needs and we can certainly do more.

Speaker 4

Now, would that be like kind of like what Square tries to do or Block where they give a little bit of advances or you towards something or what what where does the bank go?

Speaker 4

What does he what do you lend against?

Speaker 10

Yeah, so it varies by we're running three pilots right now.

Speaker 10

Some of them do lend against.

Speaker 10

So with our pre sort customers, we're starting to do asset based based lending.

Speaker 10

We're working with three pls, which also involves some asset based lending there.

Speaker 10

But the other opportunity is, as I mentioned, shipping software.

Speaker 10

对。

Right.

Speaker 10

The post office doesn't extend credit to customers when they ship.

Speaker 10

So that's something that we can do is that we can extend credit to those customers, whether small business or large.

Speaker 10

And because we have a long history with these companies, some as long as fifty years, we have a pretty good idea of the credit risk we're taking when we do business with them.

Speaker 4

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 4

In your letter, you talked about, look, you have the hedge fund business and that the Heste Capital and they were selling it.

Speaker 4

I thought you were quite earnest again in saying, look, before you hit me on this, wait a second.

Speaker 4

I'm like, I'm the league.

Speaker 4

I used to you might be the largest shareholder, and you're not being compensated in share.

Speaker 4

You you have a very low base salary, and you're buying those shares in the open market.

Speaker 10

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 10

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 10

So I I appreciate you saying that.

Speaker 10

So a few things that point to one, I do manage a deep value investment fund and there's you know what we have to do with our investors.

Speaker 10

Know the commitments we make, the types of investments we make.

Speaker 10

But just because something isn't a good fit for Hestia doesn't mean it's a great value.

Speaker 10

对。

Right.

Speaker 10

And I think that Pitney Bowes is, which is why I've been taking distributions out of Hestia to take shares directly in the company as the CEO of Pitney Bowes.

Speaker 10

I see a tremendous runway for this company.

Speaker 10

And as you said, well with compensation, I took the lowest legal salary that you can get in the state of Connecticut so that I could have almost all my incentive based on shares because I am incredibly excited about opportunities for this company.

Speaker 4

So how much of it depends on the gross domestic product and growth?

Speaker 4

I mean, the small medium sized businesses, some people say, I mean, like Shopify would tell you it's really good.

Speaker 4

We know that paycheck says it's really good.

Speaker 4

How are your customers doing?

Speaker 10

Customers are doing great, Jim.

Speaker 10

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 10

One thing I do love about this company is we're not very cyclical.

Speaker 10

So, you know, anybody looking at us something to keep in mind is the economy takes a downturn.

Speaker 10

It doesn't really hit us much, but we do have two sec two parts of our business that are economically sensitive Within Presort, we do marketing mail for customers and marketing tends to be more cyclical, more tied to the economy.

Speaker 10

We're seeing no weakness there.

Speaker 10

And then our bank, obviously, the financial conditions of our customers weighs in on delinquency rates and other, and we're seeing no signs of stress at all.

Speaker 4

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 4

So I know that the you've turned things around, but you you do expect SendTech to that has the decline.

Speaker 4

It's just declining less.

Speaker 4

Can that break into the positive, you think?

Speaker 10

We think that it can.

Speaker 10

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 10

So and in the short term, and again, we try to be incredibly transparent.

Speaker 4

对。

Right.

Speaker 4

I'm an investor.

Speaker 4

不。

No.

Speaker 4

I mean Yeah.

Speaker 10

I'm an investor in

Speaker 4

whole thing.

Speaker 4

Been transparent.

Speaker 4

That's why I asked you because you could say, I know you might just say, look, not yet, Jim.

Speaker 4

But you're obviously thinking it could.

Speaker 10

Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 10

And I think it'll come primarily through the shipping software space.

Speaker 10

There's some other things I won't get into the weeds too much as a mail stream on demand product we offer.

Speaker 10

There's opportunity there, but you know the mail meter business we do expect to decline, but we see a lot of opportunities for growth.

Speaker 10

We do face some short term headwinds, but those are outside of our core business.

Speaker 10

We're very optimistic about it.

Speaker 4

Tell people how many shares the company bought back.

Speaker 4

I thought that was really important.

Speaker 10

I believe we bought back 50,000,000 shares roughly.

Speaker 10

Should I should know, but about 50,000,000.

Speaker 4

不是。

No.

Speaker 4

That's the number I'm looking for.

Speaker 4

Anyway, wanna thank Kurt Wolfe.

Speaker 4

He's the CEO of Pitney Bowes for delivering exactly what he said he did last time he came on.

Speaker 4

Maybe you can do it again.

Speaker 10

Absolutely.

Speaker 10

Why not?

Speaker 4

Mad Money is back into the brain.

Speaker 10

Thanks, Jim.

Speaker 7

Coming up, he's the fastest mind on Wall Street, so we're putting him to the test with your help.

Speaker 7

Bring on the lightning round next.

Speaker 4

It is time to set the white round.

Speaker 4

And then the lightning round is over.

Speaker 4

Are you ready?

Speaker 4

Ski deck.

Speaker 4

The light room clears in mind.

Speaker 4

Start with James in Texas.

Speaker 4

Speaker 4

Jimmy Chill.

Speaker 4

当然。

You betcha.

Speaker 11

Big NFC's booyah from the Lone Star State.

Speaker 4

Good to have you on the show.

Speaker 4

What's going on?

Speaker 11

Hey.

Speaker 11

I wanna get your take on a stock that IPO back in February this year is in the critical path for all data center build outs, power grid infrastructure, and industrial facilities with energy intensive operations.

Speaker 11

With IPO lockup expiring tomorrow and hyperscaler CapEx spending for data centers seemingly still speed ahead, is it time to buy, or is it a wait and see if management goes for a third post IPO sale?

Speaker 11

The company is Forgent Power Solutions, stock symbol FPS.

Speaker 4

I know it.

Speaker 4

I was surprised it hadn't gone up.

Speaker 4

I figured, jeez, it just been unrecognized, but you bring up this idea of the lockup.

Speaker 4

I would tell you that this company is not cheap, but I think that the stock is right versus the others that are in the group.

Speaker 4

It hasn't moved.

Speaker 4

Let's go to Sam in Massachusetts.

Speaker 4

Sam.

Speaker 9

Jim, listen.

Speaker 9

If we have a bottleneck in energy and we have bottleneck in memory, I've been looking at the company NDEC.

Speaker 9

It makes a more energy efficient type of way to transmit, the data.

Speaker 9

So I'm curious what you think about NDEC here at under 1,000,000,000.

Speaker 4

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 4

This one is starting to, you know, it's had a big move back.

Speaker 4

Let me do this.

Speaker 4

I I don't want to be glib about this.

Speaker 4

I need to know better.

Speaker 4

I need to know this anymore because it just moved up so much.

Speaker 4

I can't just say it's fine.

Speaker 4

That wouldn't be right.

Speaker 4

Let's go to James in South Carolina.

Speaker 4

James Jimmy Chill.

Speaker 4

Chill.

Speaker 4

I'm Chill.

Speaker 4

Well

Speaker 12

long time long time and club member.

Speaker 4

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 4

I mean triple play there.

Speaker 4

What's up?

Speaker 12

Hey.

Speaker 12

Jimmy, the company that I'm calling you about, the co CEO of this company purchased $50,000,000 worth of stock on June 6 in the open market.

Speaker 12

The rest of senior management purchased well over $5,000,000.

Speaker 12

They are waiting on FDA approval, which should come anytime between November 14 or sooner.

Speaker 12

Their trials have produced much better results than the one company that's already selling this this drug.

Speaker 12

The company I'm calling about, Jimmy, is Summit Therapeutics, SMMC.

Speaker 4

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 4

It has issues.

Speaker 4

Well, okay.

Speaker 4

Let's put this way.

Speaker 4

It's a great spec.

Speaker 4

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 4

Let let's leave it like that.

Speaker 4

This can be your spec.

Speaker 4

Remember, in, how to make money in any market but how you can have a Spec.

Speaker 4

Let that be your Spec.

Speaker 4

I don't want to be more than one Spec because you know what there's so many good companies out there.

Speaker 4

I think every one out of every five two out of every 10 if you're really pressing it.

Speaker 4

But that's how I feel about Spec.

Speaker 4

You're okay to speculate.

Speaker 4

Let's go to Jake in Arizona.

Speaker 4

Jake.

Speaker 9

Who's Jim Jacob from Phoenix.

Speaker 9

How you been.

Speaker 9

Another record.

Speaker 9

不错。

Good.

Speaker 9

很好。

Good.

Speaker 9

Carvana

Carvana just posted another record quarter.

Speaker 9

Is this a pullback or a buying opportunity or should investors wait.

Speaker 4

No it is a buying opportunity.

Speaker 4

I've got to tell you when I went over things, I thought things were really good.

Speaker 4

I mean sometimes the stock gets forced out there.

Speaker 4

People really hate Carvana.

Speaker 4

This was a good quarter.

Speaker 4

Ernie Garcia

Ernie Garcia did a good job.

Speaker 4

And by the way, put the shack at us.

Speaker 4

So the shacks and look at shack, shack looks different.

Speaker 4

I mean shack you know good always good spokesperson shack.

Speaker 4

He's he's winner.

Speaker 4

That should not influence your decision.

Speaker 4

But I do point it out.

Speaker 4

Let's go to Charlie in New York Charlie.

Speaker 9

Booyah Mr.

Speaker 9

Cramer.

Speaker 9

Woah

Speaker 4

yeah Charlie, what's up?

Speaker 9

Is it okay if I call you Jamesy?

Speaker 4

Why not?

Speaker 4

That's what pop called me.

Speaker 9

Alright, Jamesy.

Speaker 9

Reddit

Reddit delivered strong numbers, the stock still got punished.

Speaker 9

As a shareholder, it's incredibly frustrating watching a company execute and get sold anyway.

Speaker 9

Is this a buying opportunity?

Speaker 4

I'm trying

Speaker 5

to tell me yourself.

Speaker 4

不是。

No.

Speaker 4

不对。

No.

Speaker 4

不是。

No.

Speaker 4

The market is saying that maybe they need to do a new deal with Google.

Speaker 4

We don't know what that deal is going to be.

Speaker 4

I I'm not a seller redder here.

Speaker 4

I was surprised that this stock got hit as bad as it did.

Speaker 4

It should not have done so.

Speaker 4

I'm with you.

Speaker 4

And that, ladies and gentlemen, conclusion of the

Speaker 9

lightning round.

Speaker 7

The lightning round is sponsored by Charles Schwab.

Speaker 7

Coming up, Cramer's running through how stock baskets are interfering with the gains from individual companies.

Speaker 7

Next.

Speaker 4

There's a silliness to the stock market that confounds those who focus on the fortunes of individual companies.

Speaker 4

I alluded to it this morning on x when I wrote, quote, diplomacy equals buy Boeing.

Speaker 4

Bombing equals sell Boeing.

Speaker 4

In reality, it's crazy to think Boeing's prospects hinge on the outcome of the war with Iran.

Speaker 4

确实。

Sure.

Speaker 4

There are some airlines from Gulf states that might not be able to buy or afford Boeing planes with the war hurting their finances.

Speaker 4

Well, generally, the airlines might not be able to afford as many new planes thanks to the rising cost of jet fuel.

Speaker 4

At least that's what people seem to think.

Speaker 4

Still, the stock did trade up $17 proving my pithy posted thesis.

Speaker 4

But Boeing the company, not Boeing the trading plaything, gets value on cash flow and production.

Speaker 4

How many planes they can deliver per month, not on short term concerns like the war on Iran.

Speaker 4

It's got a backlog of over 6,200 commercial planes, which is about ten years of production.

Speaker 4

So these kinds of considerations are meaningless.

Speaker 4

On a day to day basis though, that doesn't matter to Boeing the stock.

Speaker 4

See traders create baskets of stocks, including a basket for diplomacy and a basket for war.

Speaker 4

Almost every time president Trump says he's gonna hit Iran hard, the basket gets that it has the Boeing in it gets hammered.

Speaker 4

Then this weekend, diplomacy prevailed, and you knew the stock would soar, which is exactly what happened because, well, this is what you buy if there's diplomacy.

Speaker 4

Companies can't do much about these baskets even as they over influence the prices of their stocks.

Speaker 4

The only time the stocks seem to align with the underlying business is when the companies report.

Speaker 4

There's more signal than noise, which brings me to the next set of war related distortions, the retailers.

Speaker 4

As Wall Street sees it, the retailers are very sensitive to the war.

Speaker 4

When the president says we're gonna attack Iran, the money flow slows to the low price retailers that thrive when the price of oil rises, namely Costco and Walmart.

Speaker 4

When the war goes on hold, a different retail basket takes over the discretion of retailers.

Speaker 4

Wasn't surprised to see the stocks of Target, Macy's, Williamson, number running today.

Speaker 4

Traders who create these baskets regard those three as hostage to discretionary spending, and that gets hurt by higher gasoline prices.

Speaker 4

I think this kind of granularity is totally fatuous.

Speaker 4

Target

Target just happens to be doing better ever since the management switch late last year.

Speaker 4

We have snow in better benefiting from the great work of CEO Laura Albert.

Speaker 4

Macy's relatively new management has done a terrific job turning things around.

Speaker 4

Meanwhile, Costco and Walmart, they're both excellent evergreen retailers.

Speaker 4

You should own them regardless of the state of the war.

Speaker 4

Now we know that earnings still matter, and the power of the baskets recedes as you approach the actual day of reporting.

Speaker 4

For example, Ralph Warren, the company, reports Thursday.

Speaker 4

That stock's been part of the discretionary spending basket.

Speaker 4

It seems to be trading on its own today though.

Speaker 4

Out of fear perhaps that it might not make the numbers, I think it's headed for a good quarter.

Speaker 4

That said Ralph Lauren's had such a great run that maybe it's too for a breather.

Speaker 4

These baskets are indeed a nightmare for people like me who actually do the homework and how companies are doing.

Speaker 4

Consider the case of situational awareness.

Speaker 4

That's a hedge fund that got hit with horrendous losses, became a victim of over leverage.

Speaker 4

The performance of this fund was so legendary that there were baskets created to mimic the fund's moves.

Speaker 4

Neapolitan, the boy genius manager, apparently believed that hardware was king and software was pawned.

Speaker 4

Both traded as baskets.

Speaker 4

The software basket underperformed the market regardless of performance of the underlying fundamentals because hardware was linked to AI and software was seen as a victim of AI.

Speaker 4

That dynamic reversed itself last month with the demise of the Wonder Boys firm.

Speaker 4

And these stocks are now trading the fundamentals again.

Speaker 4

Hence why ServiceNow, which has the best fundamentals case of the software companies, has sort of laid.

Speaker 4

I think it's got further to run.

Speaker 4

The jailbreak has also unleashed the stock of Salesforce.

Speaker 4

Although ServiceNow is perceived to have more AI, so therefore it's more of a winner.

Speaker 4

The worst thing about the baskets, they control the trading on a daily basis.

Speaker 4

The best thing, they create real opportunities as the stocks divorce themselves from the fundamentals until the company's report.

Speaker 4

There are big gains to be had when the worth of the baskets blows up in the face of real earnings.

Speaker 4

It's good to see that the fundamentals still matter even if it only happens during earning season just four times a year.
