Speaker 0

好了,我正开进我家车道。

Okay, I'm pulling on my driveway.

Speaker 0

这意味着又到了开车去上班的时候了。

That means it's another time for a drive to work.

Speaker 0

所以今天我给各位准备了一个特别的惊喜。

So I have a special treat for you guys today.

Speaker 0

打个招呼吧。

Say hello.

Speaker 0

嗨。

Hi.

Speaker 0

这位是伊桑·弗莱舍。

It is Ethan Fleisher.

Speaker 0

伊桑今天跟我拼车,这样他就能参加我们今天的播客了。

Ethan is carpooling with me today so that he can join us for today's podcast.

Speaker 0

跟梅卡瓦达不一样——梅卡瓦达有时候也跟我拼车——伊桑决定跟我一起纯粹是为了上播客。

And unlike Mechavada, who actually sometimes I carpool with, Ethan decided to join me just to be on the podcast.

Speaker 1

我觉得会挺有意思的,所以就来了。

I thought it would be fun, so here I am.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

所以我今天选的话题是“伟大设计师选拔赛”,伊桑对这个很熟悉。

So the topic I decided for today was The Great Designer Search, which is something Ethan is very familiar with.

Speaker 0

我想我们先聊聊这个比赛是怎么开始的,然后我们会回顾伊桑在“伟大设计师选拔赛”中的整个经历。

So what I thought we'd do first is talk about how it came to be, then and we're gonna walk through Ethan's entire run with The Great Designer Search too, that is.

Speaker 0

伊桑,你能讲讲这个故事吗?因为我已经讲过很多次了。

So Ethan, can you tell me the story since I I've told the story many times.

Speaker 0

你能跟大家说说“伟大设计师选拔赛”是怎么开始的吗?

Can you tell the public the story of how The Great Designer Search started?

Speaker 1

我想想,让我回忆一下。

I believe let me see.

Speaker 1

你当时有一个空缺名额。

You had a slot open.

Speaker 1

当时正好有一个设计师的职位空缺。

Position was going to be available as it for a designer.

Speaker 1

然后你问了你当时的老板,他是——

And you asked your boss at the time who was

Speaker 0

在艾伦之前。

Before Aaron.

Speaker 1

兰迪·布勒。

Randy Bueller.

Speaker 0

兰迪·布勒。

Randy Bueller.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

如果你可以按自己的方式填补这个职位。

If you could fill it any way you wanted.

Speaker 1

他说可以。

And he said yes.

Speaker 1

于是你就搞了个《美国偶像》式的比赛,来决定谁会成为下一任万智牌设计师。

And so you did an American Idol style contest to determine who was going to be the next Magic Designer.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

我来补充一下这里面的细节。

Let me fill fill fill the gaps in here.

Speaker 0

这挺不错的。

That's pretty good.

Speaker 0

那么,如果把我们做过的所有万智牌系列都算上,包括专家扩展包和核心系列,谁设计的数量最多?

So if you took all the Magic sets we've made and counted up looking at expert expansions and core sets, who's made the most?

Speaker 0

我是第一名。

I'm number one.

Speaker 0

迈克·埃利奥特是第二名。

Mike Elliott's number two.

Speaker 0

第三名是布莱恩·廷斯曼。

Number three is Brian Tinsman.

Speaker 0

第四名是比尔·罗斯,第五名是亚伦·福赛思。

Number four is Bill Rose, and number five is Aaron Forsyth.

Speaker 0

这些人里有多少是作为设计师被招进来的?

How many of those people were hired to be designers?

Speaker 0

你猜猜看。

Guess for you.

Speaker 1

一个都没有?

None of them?

Speaker 0

没错,一个都没有。

None of them is correct.

Speaker 0

亚伦当初是招来做网站管理的。

Aaron was hired to run the website.

Speaker 0

布莱恩是作为《万智牌》的业务经理招进来的,而我们其他三个人都是作为开发人员招进来的。

Brian was hired as a business manager for Magic, and the other three of us were hired as developers.

Speaker 0

所以很长一段时间里,我们的一个难题就是根本不知道该怎么找设计师。

So one of our problems for a long time was we had no idea how to find designers.

Speaker 0

唯一的办法就是先招人做别的事,然后指望其中有些人能阴差阳错地变成设计师。

The only strategy was hire people for other things and hope some of them somehow turn out to be designers.

Speaker 0

嗯,这招确实有点用。

And well, it worked a little bit.

Speaker 0

但有好几年我们根本找不到任何人。

It wasn't we we had a whole bunch of years where we weren't finding anybody.

Speaker 0

于是有一天兰迪来找我说,有件事得说明一下——开发部门每半年就有一个实习生。

And so Randy came to me one day and said, now something we should explain is the developers literally have an intern every six months.

Speaker 0

他们那边实习生一直没断过。

They're constantly having interns in development.

Speaker 0

而设计部门却从来没有实习生。

And design didn't have interns.

Speaker 0

所以兰迪跑来跟我说,马克,我已经把预算批了。

And so Randy came to me and said, you know, Mark, I've I put it in the budget.

Speaker 0

你想不想招个设计实习生?

How would you like to have a design intern?

Speaker 0

我的问题是我不知道该怎么找到这样的人。

And my problem was I didn't know how to find it.

Speaker 0

我真的完全不知道该怎么找一个设计实习生。

I I literally like, I didn't know how to find a design intern.

Speaker 0

又不是说我认识一个,直接就能招进来。

It wasn't like I knew of one and I could just hire them.

Speaker 0

我根本不知道该找谁。

I didn't know who to get.

Speaker 0

当时我受到了一些启发,大概是《天桥骄子》和《学徒》的结合吧。

And I I was inspired at the time by some combination of Project Runway and The Apprentice, I think.

Speaker 0

这启发我搞了一个类似求职真人秀的活动,就像《天桥骄子》和《学徒》里那样,本质上都是为了争取一份工作。

And that inspired me to do what we call the job search kind of of reality show in which both Project Runway and Apprentice, you're trying to get a job essentially.

Speaker 0

如果你每周完成一个任务,就能得到那个机会。

And if you every do a task every week, then you can get that.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

那我们稍微快进一下。

So let's flash forward a little bit.

Speaker 0

作为局外人,你对第一届‘伟大设计师搜寻’了解多少?

So what do you know about the first Great Designer Search as an outsider?

Speaker 0

你当时有什么经历?

What did you what did you experience?

Speaker 1

这件事发生的时候我并不知道。

I was not aware of it when it was happening.

Speaker 1

错过了还挺遗憾的。

I was quite disappointed to have missed out on it.

Speaker 1

不过当时有很多设计卡牌的挑战。

But it was there were a lot of challenges to design cards.

Speaker 1

当然,最终获胜的是亚历克西斯·詹森。

And, of course, Alexis Jansen was the eventual victor.

Speaker 1

而且,有四名参赛者进入了威世智工作,他们现在都还在那里,分别是亚历克西斯、肯·纳格尔、马克·格洛布斯和格雷厄姆·霍普金斯。

And, four of the, participants got positions at Wizards of the Coast, and they all still work there now, Alexis and Ken Nagel and Mark Globus and Graham Hopkins.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

所以事情是这样的,亚历克西斯得了第一,肯得了第二。

So what happened was Alexis came in first and Ken came in second.

Speaker 0

他们两个都在研发部门实习了。

Both of them got internships in r and d.

Speaker 0

格雷厄姆·霍普金斯得了第三。

Graham Hopkins came in third.

Speaker 0

他也在研发部门实习了,但不是设计岗。

He also got an internship in r and d but not in design.

Speaker 0

他去了哪个部门来着,我忘了,反正是研发部的其他某个部门。

He got one I forget what it some other section of r and d.

Speaker 0

而马克·格洛布斯被数字部门录用了,当时公司有个很大的数字项目。

And Mark Globus got hired by the digital there was a big digital initiative at the time.

Speaker 0

我们当时在做的一个叫GleeMax的项目,后来没成,但他就是为那个项目被招进来的。

We were doing a project called GleeMax that ended up not sort of panning out, but he got hired on for that.

Speaker 0

实际上,格雷厄姆一开始是实习生,后来也去了数字部门,现在做编程工作。

In fact, maybe well, Graham started as an intern, then Graham also ended up going to the digital department, and he does programming now.

Speaker 0

顺便说一句,他们四个人现在都还在做魔法设计。

All four of them, by the way, still do magic design.

Speaker 0

这里有个我最喜欢的小趣闻,一个关于伟大设计师搜索的趣事。

Here's my favorite little tidbit, a great great designer search tidbit.

Speaker 0

自从我们举办了第一届伟大设计师搜索以来,我们组建的每一个设计团队里都有这项活动的校友,这说明它一直是我们设计人才的重要来源。

Since we had the first Great Designer Search, we have yet to run a design team that hasn't had an alumni from a great designer search, which means that it's been a huge source of design for us.

Speaker 0

我们从完全不知道如何寻找设计师,变成了找到了一种非常有效的方法。

We went from literally not knowing how to find designers to finding this really effective way to find designers.

Speaker 0

实际上,第二届伟大设计师搜索,不知为什么不是第一届,赢得了一个叫INNY奖的奖项,这是孩之宝内部颁发的创新奖。

In fact, the second great Designer Search, not the first one for some reason, won what's called an INNY award, which is an innovation award Hasbro does internally.

Speaker 0

所以,GDS第二届,我们一会儿会讲到,实际上为我们在孩之宝旗下的威世智公司赢得了一个创新奖。

And so the GDS two, which we will get to in a sec, actually won us an innovation award within wizard wizard for wizards within Hasbro.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

那么现在我们开始第一届GDS。

So now we do GDS one.

Speaker 0

最后我们招了一大批人。

We end up hiring a whole bunch of people.

Speaker 0

所以我宣布了第二届GDS。

So I announce GDS two.

Speaker 0

说说看,我宣布的时候你在哪里?

So walk where where you are when I announce that.

Speaker 1

哦,你是在推特上宣布的吧?

Oh, well, you announced it on your Twitter, I think?

Speaker 0

我在专栏和推特上都宣布了。

Well, I announced it in my column and and on my Twitter.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

我当时特别兴奋,因为我错过了第一届。

And I was very excited because I'd missed the first one.

Speaker 1

我大概有六个月没玩《魔法风云》了,结果就错过了第一次机会。

I was out of Magic for six months or something and happened to miss it.

Speaker 1

所以我就想,哦,这次我一定要参加。

And so I was like, oh, I've gotta do this one.

Speaker 1

如果连尝试在我最喜欢的游戏里找份设计师的工作都不做,我会觉得自己像个傻瓜。

I'll feel like an idiot if I don't at least try to get a job working as a designer on my favorite game.

Speaker 1

当时我在一家书店全职工作,

So I was working full time at a bookstore and

Speaker 0

什么书店?

What what bookstore?

Speaker 1

俄勒冈州波特兰市的鲍威尔书城,大概是西半球最大的新旧书店吧。

Powell's City of Books in Portland, Oregon, the largest new and used bookstore in the Western Hemisphere or something.

Speaker 1

很棒的店。

Great store.

Speaker 1

同时我也兼职做网页设计。

And I was also freelancing as a web designer.

Speaker 1

所以我当时挺忙的,你知道,还要带三个孩子。

So I was pretty busy and, you know, raising three kids.

Speaker 1

所以活儿挺多的,但我想,行吧。

So a lot of work there, but I was like, okay.

Speaker 1

我可以挤出几个小时来做这个。

I can squeeze in a few extra hours for this.

Speaker 1

应该会挺有意思的。

It'll be fun.

Speaker 0

就几个小时?

A few extra hours?

Speaker 0

确实挺有意思的。

It was fun.

Speaker 1

所以我没太当回事。

So I didn't take it very seriously.

Speaker 1

心想,肯定有成千上万的人报名。

Was like, oh, there'll be thousands of people entering.

Speaker 1

我根本不可能赢这个比赛,但要是连试都不试一下,我肯定会后悔的。

There's no way I'm gonna win this thing, but I'll kick myself if I don't at least try it.

Speaker 0

好,简单说一下,当时的规则对两者都是一样的,我记得有三条。

So really quickly, so the rules at the time were they're for both of them is, I think there were three things.

Speaker 0

第一,你必须年满18岁,这是法律规定的。

A, you had to be at least 18 legally.

Speaker 0

第二,你必须能在美国合法工作,因为工作地点在这里。

B, you had to be able to legally work in The United States because the job was here.

Speaker 0

第三,你必须愿意为了实习搬到西雅图,因为显然你得来公司上班。

And three, you had to willing to relocate for the internship to Seattle because obviously, you had to come to work at the company.

Speaker 0

顺便说一下,记得那个“伟大设计师搜索”的奖品是六个月的实习机会。

And remember by the way, The Great Designer Search, the prize was a six month internship.

Speaker 0

那就是奖品。

That was the prize.

Speaker 0

所以我们就这么通过了。

So us through.

Speaker 0

所以,第一件事你得做的是……

So what was the fir the first thing you had to do was

Speaker 1

哦,我们得先写一篇文章。

Oh, we had to write an essay first.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

你得回答十个作文题。

You had to write ten ten essay questions.

Speaker 0

每个大概要写500字。

Each one was, I think, 500 words.

Speaker 0

对。

Yep.

Speaker 0

所以总共是5000字。

So that was 5,000 words.

Speaker 0

对。

Yep.

Speaker 0

那你给我们讲讲这个过程吧。

So talk walk us through that.

Speaker 1

任务是要我们为一个平面、一个系列、一个环境构思一个概念。

The idea was we had to come up with a concept for a plane, for a set, for a block.

Speaker 1

为那个想一个概念,然后,哦不。

Come up with a concept for that and oh, no.

Speaker 1

抱歉。

I'm sorry.

Speaker 1

那是第三个任务。

That was the third one.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

那是第三个。

That was the third one.

Speaker 1

第一个是一系列关于各种魔法设计主题的论述题,比如标准赛制里最差的机制是什么之类的。

The first one was a series of essay questions about various magic design topics, topics like what was the worst mechanic in standard or something?

Speaker 1

你最不喜欢的机制是什么?

What was your least favorite mechanic?

Speaker 1

你最喜欢的机制是什么?

What was your favorite mechanic?

Speaker 1

你是蒂米型、约翰尼型还是斯派克型玩家?

Are you a Timmy, a Johnny, or a Spike?

Speaker 1

或者别的类型。

Or man.

Speaker 1

这些我都记混了。

It's all blurring together.

Speaker 0

都过去两年了。

It's been, like, two years.

Speaker 0

是啊。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

所以情况是这样的,我在做第一届GDS的时候,就想做一件事,而且两届的入选方式非常相似,我首先说,好的。

So what happened was, one of the things I wanted to do when I made the first GDS, and, the means to get in was very similar between the two, was I first said, okay.

Speaker 0

这事儿是认真的。

This is serious.

Speaker 0

我知道很多人嘴上说想做,但我想把那些只是说说而已的人,和真正想做的人区分开。

I know a lot of people say they'd like to do it, but I wanna kinda weed out the the people that just say they want it from those that really do wanna do it.

Speaker 0

所以我们总是从一篇论文题目开始,题目很难,而且要求写五千字。

And so we always start with an essay question, which are really hard questions and, you know, 5,000 words.

Speaker 0

就是说,如果你真想干这事儿,那就向我证明你有决心,也让我看看你懂点东西。

Like, look, if you wanna do this, prove to me you you have some dedication and show me that you know something.

Speaker 0

所以第一步永远是论文测试。

And so the first thing's always an essay test.

Speaker 0

第一届GDS有一千多人申请,我知道第二届比第一届人更多。

Then and we had we had the first GDS had a thousand some people, and I know we had more on the second one than the first one.

Speaker 0

顺便说一句,第二届GDS创下了申请孩之宝职位人数最多的纪录。

In fact, by the way, GDS two holds the record for being the most people ever applying for a job at Hasbro.

Speaker 0

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

所以我们当时有个作文题。

So I we had an essay question.

Speaker 0

然后下一步,你要参加一个选择题测试。

And then if you the next thing, you got to a multiple choice test.

Speaker 0

说说那个选择题测试吧。

Talk about the multiple choice test.

Speaker 1

嗯,基本上就是测试你对万智牌设计的了解。

Well, it basically was test your making magic knowledge.

Speaker 1

选择题测试里的信息几乎都来自你的文章。

Almost all the information in the multiple choice test was from your articles.

Speaker 1

所以我当时是你文章的忠实读者。

So I would have been an avid reader of your articles.

Speaker 1

即使有些时候我不玩万智牌了,我仍然会读你的文章,因为我觉得里面有很多很棒的游戏设计知识。

And even during some periods when I wasn't playing Magic, I still read your articles because I thought there was a lot of great game design knowledge there.

Speaker 1

那有多少道题?

So how many questions were

Speaker 0

一共多少道?

there?

Speaker 0

50道。

50.

Speaker 1

50道题啊。

50 questions.

Speaker 0

我觉得你最多可以错八道题,我是这么想的。

And I think you had to get I think you can miss up to eight, I think.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

我刚好卡在及格线附近。

I was pretty close to the line.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

我觉得你得答对

I think you had to get

Speaker 1

接近

Close to

Speaker 0

那个分数线。

the line.

Speaker 0

你得答对42道题才能进入下一部分。

You had to get 42 right to advance to the next part.

Speaker 0

你答对了多少道?

How many how many did you get?

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

我好像答对了43或44道

I think I got, like, 43 or 44

Speaker 0

对。

right.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

所以,我可不是麦克斯·麦考尔。

So I I was no Max McCall.

Speaker 1

那是肯定的。

That's for sure.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

麦克斯·麦考尔

Max McCall

Speaker 1

拿了满分。

Got a 100%.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

他是唯一一个在两个不同的GDS中都拿到满分的人,现在麦克斯在威世智全职工作。

He's the only one in two different GDSs to get a 100%, and Max now works full time at Wizards.

Speaker 0

另一个有意思的地方是,比利·莫雷诺,他现在是全职开发人员,就差一道题没答对。

Other The interesting thing is Billy Billy Moreno, who currently now is a full time developer, missed by one question.

Speaker 1

对。

Yep.

Speaker 1

所以说,那考试确实挺狠的。

So it was was pretty it was pretty vicious.

Speaker 1

有些题目确实有点难。

Some of the questions are a little hard.

Speaker 0

所以,从一千多人里,有101人通过了选择题测试。

So from over a thousand people, a 101 people made it pass the multiple choice test.

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

不过说真的,我觉得这样也挺合理的。我之前说过,我本来想正好让100人通过,然后根据实际答题情况调整了一下分数线,结果42分就成了101人的门槛。

And to be fair, by the way, I think it worked as I said I wanted a 100 to make it and then I rounded up to whatever the the next answer was and it turned out that 42 is the cutoff for a 101.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

那如果你通过了多选题测试,下一部分是什么?

So if you make the pass multiple choice sets, what was the next part?

Speaker 1

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 1

然后我突然意识到,哇,这变得认真起来了。

So then I suddenly realized, woah, this is getting serious.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

我现在是前10%以内了。

I'm in the top less than 10% here.

Speaker 1

我得更加认真一点。

I gotta get a little more serious.

Speaker 1

但接下来我们要做的是描述我们对一个区块的愿景,一个我们想主导的假设性区块。

But so the next thing we had to do was describe our vision for a block, a hypothetical block that we would wanna be leading.

Speaker 1

而且我们必须通过卡牌设计来展示我们的愿景。

And we would have to illustrate our vision by using card designs.

Speaker 1

其中一半是我们自己设计的,另一半是网上其他人设计的,我们通过威世智设立的那个维基一起合作。

Half of which we designed and the other half of which were designed by other people on the Internet that we worked with on the this wiki that wizards had set up.

Speaker 0

那我先插一句,解释一下为什么这么做。

So let me jump in real quick and explain why we did that.

Speaker 0

事情是这样的,第一届GNS非常成功,但我们发现,那届比赛其实主要是在测试玩家设计卡牌的能力。

So what happened was the first GNS was very successful, but what we discovered in the first GNS was we were really testing players abilities to design cards.

Speaker 0

而这次我们寻找的技能范围要更广一些。

And the skill set we were looking for this time was a little broader.

Speaker 0

我们想要的不只是擅长卡牌设计的人,而是具备两项重要能力的人。

We wanted people that now we're just good at card design, but we're good at two important skills.

Speaker 0

第一是整体视野,也就是说,能构思一个更大的框架,然后把各个部分拼凑起来。

One was holistic vision, meaning I had the idea for a larger thing and I was putting the pieces together.

Speaker 0

第二是吸收他人想法,并将其融入自己设计的能力。

And the second was the ability to take other people's ideas and incorporate them into your own.

Speaker 0

所以为了做到这一点,第一届GDS的每个任务都是独立的。

So in order to do that, the first GDS, each each assignment was independent.

Speaker 0

你知道,就是给卡牌设计金币之类的,每个任务都是独立的,彼此之间没有关联。

You know, make gold on cards, make you know, each had their own assignment to do and they were unrelated.

Speaker 0

但这次不一样,所有任务都是相互关联的。

With this one, they were all gonna be connected.

Speaker 0

每个任务都围绕着你必须提交的那个同一个世界展开。

Every assignment was gonna be on the same world that you had to give me.

Speaker 0

所以在测试中,我让他们向我展示他们的世界。

So for the test, I made them show me their world.

Speaker 0

另外,我们还想测试你与他人合作的能力,并且我们希望让每个人都有机会参与,因为根据规则,你必须在美国工作才能申请,但我们希望那些不符合条件的人也能展示他们的能力并参与进来。

Also, we wanted to test your ability to work with other people, and we wanted to give everybody access to participate because according to the way the rules work, you had to be able to work in The US to apply, but we wanted to make sure people that couldn't match that criteria could still show us what they could do and be involved.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

那么现在,跟我们说说你的世界吧。

So now tell us about your world.

Speaker 1

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 1

我的世界叫做埃皮利斯。

My world was called Epilith.

Speaker 1

第一个系列是石器时代的世界。

It was a stone age world in the first block.

Speaker 1

构思是,每个系列之间相隔数千年。

The idea was that for each set in the block, they the it would there would be thousands of years between them.

Speaker 1

会有一个时间旅行或时间扭曲的情节。

There would be some kind of a a time travel or time distortion plot.

Speaker 1

所以第一个系列是石器时代,第二个系列是青铜时代,第三个系列是铁器时代。

So that in the first set, it was the stone age, and in the second set, it was the bronze age, and in the third set, it was the iron age.

Speaker 1

你会看到不同系列之间有一些共同的文化线索,以及动物的演化,但在这几千年里,科技会飞速发展。

And the people, you would see sort of common cultural threads and and, animals evolving between the different blocks, but they would have rapid technological change over the course of these thousands of years.

Speaker 0

结果我读了一百零一份投稿,每份大概三千字。

So what happened was I read a 101 entries, which each were, I think, 3,000 words long.

Speaker 0

顺便说一句,我几天内就看完了。

And I did that all in a couple days, by the way.

Speaker 0

我就坐在研发部的沙发上,一整天都在读那些东西。

I sat on the couch by r and d and just read them all day long.

Speaker 0

脑子都快炸了。

My brain was melting.

Speaker 0

然后我给每篇都打了分,标了加号、减号或者中性符号。最后发现加号够多,我就说,行,支持的人不少。

And then what I did is I graded each one, and I gave it a plus, a minus, or a like a neutral, a neutral sign and ended up there was enough pluses that I said, okay, there's enough people that were on the thumbs up.

Speaker 0

我就只看那些了。

I'm just gonna look at those.

Speaker 0

然后我又重新看了一遍,从中挑了15篇我觉得有亮点的。

And then I relooked at those and from it, think I picked 15 ones I thought showed showed merit.

Speaker 0

接着我自己打了分,又拿给研发部的一堆人看。

And then I self graded them and then I showed them to a whole bunch of r and d people.

Speaker 0

包括Aaron、Ken Nagel、Mark Gottlieb,还有我手下大部分设计师。

Aaron and Ken Nagel and Mark Gottlieb and most most the designers I had.

Speaker 0

Globe也看过,还有之前那些同事,你知道的,Graham、Alexis、Ken,Globe都看过。

Globe has looked at them, Alexis all the previous people from the you know, Graham and Alexis and Ken and Globe has looked at them.

Speaker 0

亚伦也看过了。

Aaron looked at them.

Speaker 0

戈特利布也看过了。

Gottlieb looked at them.

Speaker 0

基本上我手下的设计师都看过了。

All the people I had basically who were my designers.

Speaker 0

然后他们给了我反馈。

And then from them, they gave me feedback.

Speaker 0

最后的结果是,他们基本上都同意其中七个,第八个位置有点争议,最后是我拍板决定让第八个人进来的。

And what ended up happening was, I think, basically, they all agreed on seven of them, and then there was kind of a tie for the eight slot, and then I ended up being the deciding factor to get the eighth person in.

Speaker 0

但你是那七个人之一。

But you were you were one of seven.

Speaker 0

大家都觉得你应该是最终入围者之一。

You were everybody kinda agreed that you were one of the ones for the finalists.

Speaker 0

注意,在第一届GDS中,我原本选了16个人。

Now note that in the first GDS, I had originally, had 16.

Speaker 0

有人退出了,所以第一届决赛有15个人。

Someone dropped it outside 15 people in the finals for the first one.

Speaker 0

结果证明工作量很大。

That proved to be a lot of work.

Speaker 0

其实,很快说一下。

In fact, real quickly.

Speaker 0

第一届GDS我们筹备的时候,我完全不知道自己要面对什么。

So the first GDS when we put it together, I had no idea what I was getting into.

Speaker 0

我当时就想,哦,我看过《学徒》节目。

I literally I'm like, oh, I watched The Apprentice.

Speaker 0

对。

Okay.

Speaker 0

我们也能那么做。

We could do that.

Speaker 1

唐纳德·特朗普都能做。

Donald Trump can do it.

Speaker 1

你也可以做到。

You can do it.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

结果工作量特别大。

And it was a crazy amount of work.

Speaker 0

我记得很清楚,因为当时斯科特·约翰斯是网站编辑。

I mean, in fact, the first I remember this because Scott Johns was the editor at the site at the time.

Speaker 0

我们搞完第一届伟大设计师海选后,斯科特告诉我,那周《伟大设计师海选》第一集的篇幅比网站其他所有内容加起来还长。

So we put together the first Great Designer Search and Scott informed me that the first episode of The Great Designer Search was longer than every other thing on the website combined that week.

Speaker 0

真的,那内容得有成千上万页。

It was just I mean, was thousands and thousands of pages long.

Speaker 0

我是说字数,不是页数。

I'm not pages, word long.

Speaker 0

而且第一次办的时候,我们让他们每周完成一个挑战。

And so the other thing is the first time through, we made them do a challenge every week.

Speaker 0

然后我们说,好的。

And we said, okay.

Speaker 0

我们来做一些调整。

We let's make a few changes.

Speaker 0

一开始只选八个人,这样人数少一些,但每周只淘汰一个人,而不是每周淘汰好几个。

Start with only eight, so we have less people, but only take out one per week rather than multiples per week.

Speaker 0

因为我觉得我们做的挑战数量是一样的。

And because we I think we did the same number of challenges.

Speaker 0

另一个大的变化是,我们把挑战的时间间隔拉长了。

And the other big thing was we spaced them out.

Speaker 0

所以不再是每周一次挑战,而是每两到三周一次。

So instead of having one week between challenges, we had two or three weeks.

Speaker 0

我们这么做,一是为了让设计师们稍微休息一下,二是为了给我们自己更多时间来完成工作。

And we did this a, to give the the designers a little bit of a rest and b, to give us a little more time to get it done.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

那你记得你的第一个挑战是什么吗?

So do you remember your first challenge?

Speaker 0

我记得。

I do.

Speaker 0

你的第一个挑战是关于评论的。

Do you so your first challenge was comments.

Speaker 0

我觉得是选一种颜色。

Think I think one color.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

选一种颜色。

Pick a color.

Speaker 1

选择。

Choice.

Speaker 0

你喜欢的颜色。

Color of your choice.

Speaker 0

发表评论。

Make comments.

Speaker 1

所以我知道,我最初提交的论文收到了你的反馈。

So I knew we I received feedback from my on my initial, actually, essay submissions.

Speaker 1

我从你那里感受到一种强烈的信号,就是主题是进化,我想看到更多恐龙。

And so I've gotten this strong vibe from you, like, the the theme here is evolution, and I wanna see more dinosaurs.

Speaker 1

我小时候是个超级恐龙迷。

Now, when I was a kid, I was a huge dinosaur nut.

Speaker 1

我特别喜欢恐龙。

I love dinosaurs.

Speaker 1

我当时就想,这还用你劝吗?

And so I was like, oh, you don't need to twist my arms.

Speaker 1

让我设计一堆恐龙卡片,那肯定特别有意思。

I'd get me to design a bunch of dinosaur cards because that'll be a lot of fun.

Speaker 1

所以恐龙看起来非常环保。

So dinosaurs seem very green.

Speaker 1

所以我就想,好吧。

So I was like, okay.

Speaker 1

我们就选最简单的路走吧。

Let's just let's take the easiest path here.

Speaker 1

这个系列整体上想走绿色主题。

This this block wants to be green in general.

Speaker 1

我先从绿色开始,看看能往哪个方向走。

I'm gonna start with green and see where I can go from there.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

所以要注意一下。

So be aware.

Speaker 0

我觉得当时的情况是,我很喜欢你那个系列的想法。

I think what happened was I loved your idea of the block.

Speaker 0

我很喜欢时间流逝中体现进化的这个点子。

I love the evolution idea of your time elapsing.

Speaker 0

我当时跟你说的就是,好吧。

And I think what I said to you was, okay.

Speaker 0

我喜欢你从石器时代开始的想法,但如果你要做史前,那就好好做史前。

I like the idea that you're starting in the stone age, you know, but look, if you're gonna do prehistory, do prehistory.

Speaker 0

所以我才说,让我看看恐龙吧。

That's why I said, let let me see some dinosaurs.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

我的意思是,咱们

I mean, let's

Speaker 0

咱们

let's let's

Speaker 1

就做真正的史前。

do real prehistory.

Speaker 1

咱们把史前所有好玩的东西都混在一起,像大杂烩那样,怎么样?

Let's do, like, all the fun things from all of prehistory and kinda mash them up together like or something.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

我们在魔术里也经常这样,就是找点灵感,然后尽情发挥,把所有好玩的东西都做出来。

And part of what we do in magic is we say, well, let's take some inspiration and go to town and do everything that's fun.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

比如,我们要做一个日本火焰世界。

Like, oh, we're gonna do, you know, Japanese fire world.

Speaker 0

看看武士和忍者。

Let's see some samurais and ninjas.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

所以我想看点龙,因为我特别想看恐龙。

So I wanted to see some drag I have something to drag because I wanna see some dinosaurs.

Speaker 0

我跟他很认真地说,我觉得你的积木很酷。

And I said to him very strongly, I think your block is neat.

Speaker 0

我觉得你的主题是进化,对吧?你懂的,暗示一下。

I believe your theme is evolution, wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

好。

Okay.

Speaker 0

那你解释一下你是怎么尝试捕捉进化这个概念的。

So explain what you did to try try to capture evolution.

Speaker 1

我想把整个进化概念浓缩成一个机制。

So I wanted to sort of boil down the whole concept of evolution into a single mechanic.

Speaker 1

嗯,也不是一个机制。

And well, not a single mechanic.

Speaker 1

我本来打算为每种颜色设计不同的机制。

I was gonna try to do a different mechanic for each color.

Speaker 1

我从绿色开始,很早就找到了这个机制,结果效果非常好。

And I I started with green, and I think I found my mechanic very early on, and turned out to be very, very good.

Speaker 1

这个机制叫‘进化’,意思是每当一个力量值大于此生物的对手生物在你的操控下进场时,你可以在此生物上放置一个+1/+1指示物。

I had this mechanic called Evolve, and it basically meant whenever a creature with greater power than this creature enters the battlefield under your control, you can put a plus one plus one counter on this creature.

Speaker 1

所以,当新的、更强大的捕食者之类的东西进入环境时,现有的生物就会相应地进化。

So when new, more powerful predators or whatever come into the environment, the existing creatures evolve in response.

Speaker 1

显然,这在科学上并不准确。

Obviously, that's not very scientifically accurate.

Speaker 1

个体生物不会进化,但你知道,这是一种隐喻性的进化。

Individual creatures don't evolve, but it was, you know, it's metaphorical evolution.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

我插一句,你的记忆有点问题。

I'm a I'm a jump in here because your memory is faulty.

Speaker 0

你忘了一些事情。

You you are forgetting something.

Speaker 1

我忘了什么?

What am I forgetting?

Speaker 0

其实你第一次设计的时候,就已经有进化这个机制了。

So what happened was in your first thing, you had evolved.

Speaker 0

当时的进化就是:当某件事发生时,这个生物获得一个+1/+1指示物。

All evolvement was when thing x happens, I get a plus one plus one counter.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

但绿色那边,是更大的生物。

But for green, that was a bigger creature.

Speaker 1

然后到了第二个版本……

And then in the second one

Speaker 0

不对。

No.

Speaker 0

不对。

No.

展开剩余字幕(还有 210 条)
Speaker 0

不对。

No.

Speaker 0

不对。

No.

Speaker 0

不对。

No.

Speaker 0

实际上,你有一堆生物,每个有进化能力的生物进化方式都略有不同。

You had a bunch of in fact, every creature with evolve evolved slightly differently.

Speaker 0

我做了。

I did it.

Speaker 0

然后我说,那太复杂了。

And I said, that's too much.

Speaker 0

我跟你说,至少最差的情况下,每种颜色要有自己独特的进化方式。

And I said to you, well, at worst, at least have each cre each color have its own way to evolve.

Speaker 1

哦,好的。

Oh, okay.

Speaker 0

后来我就想,你知道吗?

And later, I would say, you know what?

Speaker 0

算了,不管了。

Screw it.

Speaker 0

你做得不错。

You have a good one.

Speaker 0

就让那个进化吧。

Just make that evolve.

Speaker 0

但你第一次交上来的,每个进化生物都进化得不一样。

But the first thing you turned in, every evolved creature evolved differently.

Speaker 0

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 0

不过其中一个,算你走运,其中一个进化出了更大的生物,我就说,这个我喜欢。

But one of them, luckily for you, one of them had the and a bigger creature comes out, and I said, I like this.

Speaker 0

这个不错。

This is good.

Speaker 0

我当时说,我觉得你不需要那么多。

And I said, I don't think you need so many.

Speaker 0

对,没错。

And right.

Speaker 0

我当时跟你讲,你看,绿色最多只能有一种。

What I said to you at the time was, look, green should have no more than one.

Speaker 0

最起码,每种颜色应该只朝一个方向进化。

In a bare minimum, each color should evolve one way.

Speaker 0

明白。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

你不应该让每个个体都进化得不一样,那样太复杂了。

You shouldn't have each individual evolving differently because it's too complex.

Speaker 0

后来我又跟你说,我觉得你做的这个挺酷的。

Later, I would go on to say to you, you know, I think you have something cool.

Speaker 0

我觉得没必要每种颜色都搞一个不同的版本。

I don't think you need to have every color have a different one.

Speaker 0

你看。

Look.

Speaker 0

就这么做。

Just do this.

Speaker 0

但那是后来的事了。

But that came later.

Speaker 0

所以第二周,我帮你选了一个颜色,你设计了那个。

So week two was I picked a color for you and you designed that.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

那后来发生了什么?

So what what happened then?

Speaker 1

你分配给我蓝色。

You assigned me blue.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

我觉得你当时以为蓝色对我来说是最难设计的。

I think you thought it would be the hardest one for me to do.

Speaker 0

我确实这么想的。

I'm sure I did.

Speaker 1

所以我为蓝色想了一个替代的进化机制,就是当你在一回合内施放第二个咒语时,生物会获得一个+1/+1指示物,这有点像风暴套牌那种玩法,就是施放很多咒语。

And so I came up with an alternate evolve for blue, which was I believe when you cast the second spell in a turn, the creature gets a plus one plus one counter, which was sort of like sort of like a storm deck kind of thing, play lots of spells.

Speaker 1

还挺好玩的,

And it was pretty fun,

Speaker 0

但那个设计的主题是什么呢?

but What was the flavor for that?

Speaker 1

那个主题更多是关于——我记得我的概念是,旅法师们来到这个世界,因为这个世界非常原始,他们可以从中获取某种原始的创造能量之类的。

The the flavor there was more about I believe my my concept was planeswalkers were coming to this world and to like because it was really primordial and they could get this like raw creative energy from it or something.

Speaker 1

所以他们来到这里战斗,他们施放的所有咒语四处飞散,引发混乱,导致这个时空的自然进化发生改变。

And so they would go there and they would battle and their all their spells flying around would cause havoc and cause the natural evolution of the plane to change.

Speaker 1

就像,所有这些魔法能量注入事物中,会让生物以意想不到的方式发生变化。

Like, all this magical energy infusing things would cause the creatures to change in unexpected unexpected ways.

Speaker 1

而且它不会像地球那样演化,最终会演化出狮鹫、龙之类的生物。

And instead of evolving the way our Earth evolved, you would end up with griffins and dragons and things evolving eventually.

Speaker 0

那我当时给你的反馈是什么?

So what was my feedback to you on that?

Speaker 1

我不记得了。

I don't remember.

Speaker 1

我觉得你并没有像喜欢另一个方案那样喜欢这个。

I don't think you liked it nearly as much as the other one.

Speaker 0

好吧,你想想看。

Well, remember you.

Speaker 1

这个机制让人困惑,因为你要找不同的触发条件,但结果却都一样。

It was it was confusing to have this thing where there were different triggers you were looking for that all had the same output.

Speaker 1

就像你希望有统一的触发条件,比如地落总是同一个触发条件。

It was like you wanna have unified input, like landfall is always the same input.

Speaker 1

一块地在你操控下进场,然后产生不同的效果,但你始终在找同一个触发条件。

A land entered the battlefield under your control, and it had different outputs, but you were always looking for the same thing.

Speaker 1

是不是有块地进场了?

Did a land enter the battlefield?

Speaker 1

相比之下,如果搞五个不同的进化机制,效果一样但触发方式不同,每种颜色一个,那就很难记了。

Whereas, with having five different evolves, which all do the same thing but trigger in five different ways, if you had one for each color, then it's it's much harder to keep track of.

Speaker 1

复杂度高太多了。

It's much more complex.

Speaker 0

所以我觉得第一个挑战你赢了。

So I think you won the first challenge.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

我觉得是的。

I believe I did.

Speaker 0

好。

Okay.

Speaker 0

而且我知道你赢了五个中的两个。

And I know you won two of the five.

Speaker 0

你是赢了第二个挑战,还是后来才赢的?

Did you win the second challenge or not till later?

Speaker 0

还是说肖恩赢了第二个挑战?

Or did did Sean win the second challenge?

Speaker 1

我觉得肖恩赢了第二个挑战。

Think Sean won the second challenge.

Speaker 0

顺便说一句,他最大的竞争对手之一是肖恩·梅因,后来肖恩的入职过程比伊森要复杂一些。

So so by the way, one of his big competitors was Sean Main, who would later also go on Sean Sean's route to getting hired was a little more complex than Ethan's.

Speaker 0

总之,先跳过这段。

So anyway, skip ahead.

Speaker 0

看我们聊到哪儿了,我得加快节奏讲个精彩的故事,不然时间不够了。

I can tell by how far we are to work that I need a I need a I need a spinner story up or we're gonna end before we It's

Speaker 1

这里冷死了。

freezing here.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

所以基本上,你表现得很好,进入最后挑战时已经很明确了,除非出现什么意外,你和肖恩就是最后三强中的两位。

So essentially what happened was you did well, and it was pretty clear going into the final challenge that you and Sean barring some disaster were two of the final three.

Speaker 0

然后还有几个人在争夺最后一个名额,最终斯科特·范·埃森拿到了第三个席位。

And then there are a couple of people competing for the final slot and Scott Van Essen eventually ended up pulling the third slot.

Speaker 0

他赢了最后一场挑战,拿下了第三个席位。

He won the final challenge to take the third slot.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

于是我们邀请你来到威世智公司。

So we invite you to Wizards.

Speaker 0

我们来聊聊那件事吧。

Let's talk a little about that.

Speaker 0

那么,发生了什么?

So what happens?

Speaker 0

你来到了威世智。

You come to Wizards.

Speaker 1

我当时觉得,我对自己的所有提交内容都很有信心。

So I was feeling I felt very confident about all of my submissions.

Speaker 1

我觉得一切进展得都很顺利。

I felt like everything had gone very well there.

Speaker 1

你邀请我来了威世智。

You invited me here to Wizards.

Speaker 1

我在威世智旁边的酒店里度过了一个不眠之夜。

I had a sleepless night in the hotel right next to Wizards.

Speaker 1

然后我和斯科特·范·埃森、肖恩·梅恩一起进去,参加了更多的挑战。

And Scott, Van Essen, and Sean Mayne, and I all went in for more challenges.

Speaker 1

我们都睡眠不足,虽然彼此竞争,但也在互相加油。

We were all sleep deprived, and we were all sort of competing against each other but rooting for each other too.

Speaker 1

这并不完全是零和游戏,因为很明显,第一届GDS就有四个人因此找到了工作。

It it wasn't quite a zero sum game where, like because it was obvious that the first GDS, four people had gotten jobs out of it.

Speaker 1

所以我就想,说不定我们都能靠这个找到工作。

So I was like, well, maybe we could all get jobs out of this.

Speaker 1

你知道的。

You know.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

所以,当时我们给你安排了两件大事。

So so what happened was we waited you in two two big things.

Speaker 0

第一个是‘挑战环节’,你要接受三场不同的面试,面试官是不同的人。

One is we have call the gauntlet where you get interviewed in three different interviews by a bunch of different people.

Speaker 0

基本上就是一场设计面试、一场开发面试和一场管理面试。

Basically, there's design interview, a development interview, and a management interview.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

那场面试怎么样?

How did that go?

Speaker 1

我觉得设计面试的时候我还没完全清醒,还没进入状态,但开发面试和管理面试我感觉表现得挺好的。

I think I was I wasn't quite awake yet for the design interview, so I wasn't I wasn't quite warmed up yet, but I felt like felt like I did really well in the developer interview and the management interview.

Speaker 1

那天我还面试了威世智的其他几个职位。

I was also interviewed that day for a couple of other jobs at Wizards.

Speaker 1

所以如果没拿到跟你一起的大实习机会,我也能去干点别的。

So if I hadn't won the big internship working for you, I could've gotten some other types of jobs.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

既然把你飞过来了,我们就尽量多安排些机会。

We we try to maximize stuff since you got since we flew you in.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

还有其他感兴趣的人,所以我们尽可能多地安排了面试。

There are other people that are interested, and so we we lined up as many interviews as we could.

Speaker 0

想法是你们已经证明了自己,所以想给你们多些选择。

The idea being you guys have proven yourself, and so we wanted to give you other options.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

然后我们还有一个现场设计挑战。

And then we had a design a live design challenge.

Speaker 1

哦,天哪。

Oh, man.

Speaker 0

你来说说那个现场设计

Do you explain the live design

Speaker 1

挑战吧。

challenge.

Speaker 1

让我想想。

Let me see.

Speaker 1

我记得我们得为《未来视野》设计卡牌。

It was we I remember we had to design cards for future sight.

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

所以我们当时以为那是未来视野,就改了那张牌,但那张改过的牌已经定稿了,名字必须符合某个位置,因为收藏编号的关系,而且还有对应的画。

So we were we were assuming it was future sight and we changed the card, but the card we changed already was locked in and it had a a name that had to fit in a certain slot because of the the collector numbers and had a art to it.

Speaker 1

我记得他们用的是蒸汽打杂工头目的画。

They had steam flogger bosses art, I think.

Speaker 0

是蒸汽打杂工吗?

Was it steam flogger?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错吧?

Is that right?

Speaker 1

他们得为蒸汽打杂工设计一张新牌。

They had to design a new card for Steamflogger.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

没错,就是这样。

That's that's right.

Speaker 1

它必须得插在之前那张卡和后面那张卡之间。

Had to have it had to fit in between whatever card was before

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

名字里带个S、N或者蒸汽什么的。

S n and s or steam or something.

Speaker 0

顺便说一句,这种情况确实会发生。

And this is something that actually happens, by the way.

Speaker 0

我自己就遇到过。

I've I've done this.

Speaker 0

比如,一张卡拖得特别晚,画已经画好了,名字因为收藏编号的关系基本也定死了,我们只有一点点调整空间。

Where, like, a car is really late, the art is done, the name because of of collector numbers is is pretty much locked in and so we have a little bit of wiggle room.

Speaker 0

所以他们得想出一张新卡,能配上那幅画,而且我记得那应该是张红色稀有卡,是个生物。

And so they had to come up with a new card that matched the art that fit I guess it was red rare, it was a creature.

Speaker 0

它的名字里有个词。

It had a the name had a work.

Speaker 0

你还记得你当时想的是什么吗?我搞砸了。

Do you remember what you tried thinking of I blew it.

Speaker 1

这个我搞砸了。

I blew this one.

Speaker 1

我完全搞错了。

I totally messed it up.

Speaker 1

我记得我设计了一张叫‘Sockdolager’的牌,我确实希望将来能看到一张叫‘Sockdolager’的牌,但不是配蒸汽打杂工头的那张画。

I designed I remember I designed a card called Sockdolager, which I would definitely like to see a card called Sockdolager eventually, but not with Steamflogger Boss's art.

Speaker 1

我设计了一个烧牌法术,跟蒸汽打杂工头的画完全没关系。

I designed some kind of a burn spell and had nothing to do with Steamflogger Boss's art.

Speaker 0

哦,对了,还因为那是未来视野系列,蒸汽打杂工头是一张未来转世牌。

So Oh, also remember it was because it was future sight, Steamflogger Boss was a future shifted card.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

所以这张卡必须暗示……好吧,我得把它弄难一点。

So it had to be a card that hinted the that hinted well, I've gotta make it hard.

Speaker 0

加油。

Come on.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

其实你做得比你想象的要好。

That was You did better than you obviously you thought you did.

Speaker 0

所以有一件事,我不知道他们当时有没有意识到,那就是这不仅仅是设计工作。

So one of the one of the things that also that I don't know know if they realized at the time was, it wasn't just the design work.

Speaker 0

我们也在观察他们如何为自己的设计辩护,如何与其他玩家互动,以及他们如何展现自己。

We were also seeing how they defended what they did and how they interacted with the other play people and, you know, just sort of how they presented themselves.

Speaker 0

因为很重要的一点是,这个测试基本上告诉我们,你已经具备了能力。

Because one of the big things is the test kinda taught us you had the skills.

Speaker 0

现在我们想看看,你是否能融入团队。

We are now trying to see, you know, did you fit in?

Speaker 0

你适不适合做研发工作?

Would you be a good fit in in r and d?

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

我们想不想跟这家伙共事?

Do we wanna work with this guy?

Speaker 0

实际上,我在这个设计师选拔节目里扮演的角色,就像特朗普在《学徒》里那样。

And the way it works is, I am Donald Trump to the apprentice of the Designer Search.

Speaker 0

所以最终入选的实习生是向我汇报的,因此决定权在我手里。

And so the the resulting internship reports to me, so it was my call.

Speaker 0

另外,人事部门也特别强调过,我们这是在招人,是实实在在的招聘。

The other thing I should stress as as HR stressed to me, what we are doing is a job actually, we're hiring somebody.

Speaker 0

因为这是正式的求职面试,所以我们必须遵守很多规定。

And there's all these rules we have to follow because it legitimately is a job interview.

Speaker 0

作为汇报主管,我必须独自做决定,因为这确实是一份工作。

And as a reporting manager, it I had to single handedly make the call because it's a job.

Speaker 0

我确实得选一个人出来。

I actually had to pick somebody.

Speaker 0

这非常难,因为你们三个谁都能胜任。

And it was very hard because any three of you could have done it.

Speaker 0

比如说,斯科特之前就进过前八名。

I mean, Scott, for example, had been in the previous top eight.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

斯科特连续两次进入《伟大设计师选拔赛》前八名,是唯一做到这一点的人。

Scott had back to back top eights in The Great Designer Search, the only person to do that.

Speaker 0

而且你和肖恩都赢过五个挑战中的两个,也就是三个中的两个。

And both you and Sean had won two of the three two of the five challenges.

Speaker 1

历史证明,我们俩后来都干得不错。

And as history is born out, so we both worked out.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

而且就像我说的,大设计师搜索赛确实很擅长发掘有才华的设计师。

And like I said, The Great Designer Search has proven to be really good at actually finding talented designers.

Speaker 0

但我必须做出一个决定。

But I had to make had to make a call.

Speaker 0

最后,我认为你在整个大设计师搜索赛中展现出了更大的潜力。

And in the end, I decided that you had shown more potential during the course of The Great Designer Search.

Speaker 0

我真的很欣赏你做的那些设计。

I really liked what you had done.

Speaker 0

哦,对你来说还有一个很大的加分项。

Oh, another another big plus for you.

Speaker 0

也许你这一周赢了。

Maybe you won this week.

Speaker 0

其中一项挑战是,我把别人的设计交给你来做,我给了你约翰·洛夫的设计。

One of the challenges was I gave you somebody else's design to do, and I gave you John Love's design.

Speaker 0

约翰当时是带着我所说的“领跑者”身份进入比赛的。

And John had walked into the tournament with what what I call the front runner.

Speaker 0

我当时觉得他的想法基础很好。

Like, I thought he had a really good premise.

Speaker 0

我觉得他玩的是很有意思的领域,结果约翰最后好像是第五名。

I I thought he was playing in very interesting space, and John ended up coming in fifth, I believe.

Speaker 0

不过话说回来,我很欣赏你如何把他的想法拿过来,找到一些新颖创新的方式去运用,这一点非常重要。

But anyway, I really liked how you sort of took his idea and found some new and innovative ways to use it, and that is hugely important.

Speaker 0

很多设计工作不一定是在做自己的创意,而是借鉴别人的创意——这也是我们当初设立维基的原因。我觉得你做得很好的一点是,你给约翰的想法赋予了它原本没有的框架和方向。

A lot of designing is not necessarily taking your own ideas but taking other people's ideas that's why we had the wiki and I thought you did a really good thing of sort of giving John some shape that John did not and and

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

我来威世智之前做过很多动画工作,那个工作非常需要协作。你经常需要这样:不要用自己的风格画,要用别人的风格画,因为我们在做同一个项目,每个人必须画得一样,否则动画看起来会很奇怪,每个场景风格都不一样。

I've done a lot of animation work before I came to Wizards and so that's very collaborative and you very much have to like, don't draw this in your style, draw this in somebody else's style because we're doing this project and everyone needs to draw the same way or the animation will look weird and if each scene is drawn in a different style.

Speaker 1

所以你真的得放下自我,做对整个项目最有利的事情。

So you really have to, you know, let your ego go and just do what's best for the overall project.

Speaker 1

我在GDS期间做约翰那套牌的时候,确实尽了最大努力。

And I certainly did my best when I was working on John's set during GBS.

Speaker 0

所以结果就是你赢了。

So what happened was you you won.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

你赢了之后,就得到了那个实习机会。

And when you won, you got the internship.

Speaker 0

然后你就来了,工作了六个月。

And then you came and you worked for six months.

Speaker 0

我猜那段时间肯定挺紧张的。

And I assume that was probably nerve racking.

Speaker 1

确实有点紧张,尤其是我在实习期间把家人都搬过来了。

It was a bit nerve racking, especially since I moved my family out here partway through the through the internship.

Speaker 1

所以这真的是一个很大的冒险,不过……

So it was it was a big big risk, but

Speaker 0

然后六个月之后,有趣的事情就来了。

And then after six months, that's the funny thing.

Speaker 0

我记得我当时好像不在场。

I think I was I think I was out.

Speaker 0

好像是马克·罗斯告诉你我们决定录用你的。

I think Mark Rose actually told you that we decided to hire you.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

确实是这样。

Think that's true.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

当时事情发生的时候,我正在处理一个案子。

Was on the case something happened when it happened.

Speaker 0

甚至都不是我来通知你我们要录用你的。

I wasn't even the one that could tell you that we're gonna hire you.

Speaker 0

不过总之,我们试用你六个月,结果非常满意。

But anyway, we tried you out for six months and we were very happy.

Speaker 0

所以我们就正式聘用了你。

And so we hired you on full time.

Speaker 0

我非常高兴。

I'm very happy.

Speaker 0

有趣的是,当初我和伊桑商量要聊什么的时候,因为我们俩已经合作了四套牌了。

And it's funny because when Ethan and I were first figuring out what to talk about, we because Ethan and I worked together on four sets now.

Speaker 0

伊桑参与设计了《Gatecrash》。

So Ethan was on gate crash design.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

而你参与了《Friends》的设计。

And you were on friends design.

Speaker 0

是的。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

你还参与了《Roman》的设计,现在你正带领你的第一套牌《Countrymen》的设计。

And you were on Roman's design, and now you're leading your very first set with countrymen.

Speaker 0

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 0

之前那些项目,我主要负责过Gate Crash,有时候也是我来带,所以我把主导权交给了Gottlieb。

And all those sets I led gate crash or half the time I led gate crash, so I gave gave the reins to Gottlieb.

Speaker 0

我负责过Friends,然后Nagel负责Romans,不过我们俩都在团队里。

I read I led friends, and then Nagel led Romans, but both of us were on the team.

Speaker 0

现在你离开了Countrymen,而我留在团队里,算是给你留个后路,做个安全网。

And now you're leaving countrymen, and I'm on the team sort of as a little safety net for you.

Speaker 0

这些系列

None

Speaker 1

都还没有发布。

of those sets have been released yet.

Speaker 1

所以我们也没什么好聊的。

And so there wasn't very much we could discuss about them.

Speaker 0

也许以后可以一起拼车聊聊。

So maybe some future carpool.

Speaker 0

也许等《Gate Crash》发布之后,我们可以再回来聊聊它。

Maybe maybe after gate crash comes out, can come back and we'll, we'll talk about gate crash.

Speaker 0

不过,我们现在到了。

But anyway, we are here.

Speaker 0

我刚停好车。

We I've just parked.

Speaker 0

跟你一起拼车挺开心的。

So it was fun having you, carpool.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

而且玩得很开心。

And Good time.

Speaker 0

挺有意思的。

So it's funny.

Speaker 0

我觉得我们讲得太快了,因为想说的太多了。

We we I feel like we rushed the story because there's so much to say.

Speaker 0

所以我们以后在播客里还得再多聊一些内容。

So we will have to say more stuff in future future podcasts.

Speaker 0

不过很高兴你能来,看起来是时候去制作魔法卡牌了。

But it was fun having you, and it looks like it's time to go make the magic cards.
