Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

I'm pulling on my driveway.

Speaker 0

We all know what that means.

Speaker 0

It's time for another drive to work.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

So today, I just celebrated I mean, upcoming for me in the past for you guys is I celebrated the two year anniversary of Tales From The Pit, which is my daily comic strip.

Speaker 0

And I decided I would talk about Tales From The Pit today.

Speaker 0

I'm hoping actually it's a larger discussion than just the comic itself, but sort of like what goes into making a creative endeavor.

Speaker 0

But I wanted to sort of talk about where it came from and and sort of what why why I make it and and and I don't know, just some behind the scenes stories of the comic itself.

Speaker 0

So let's begin with the story, the origin story if you will.

Speaker 0

Issue number one.

Speaker 0

So what happened was I I have an iPhone for those that are unaware.

Speaker 0

I I'm a giant giant Apple fan.

Speaker 0

In fact, something people may not know, my entire adult life, and and I'm 45, I've never had a computer at home or at work ever that wasn't a Mac or wasn't a, you know, an Apple an Apple computer.

Speaker 0

I guess before Macs existed at home, we had a we had an Apple two e way back in the day.

Speaker 0

And my dad actually got an Apple like, the very first Apple you could get, like, consumers could get, my dad got that.

Speaker 0

And, originally, you had to load it with a cassette tape.

Speaker 0

This is where discs happen.

Speaker 0

And you had to, like, put a cassette tape in for, like, three minutes ago, you know, and then you could play some text game, you know, like, the wumpers or something.

Speaker 0

Anyway, showing my age here.

Speaker 0

So anyway, we got into Apple very young.

Speaker 0

I'm a huge Apple fan.

Speaker 0

I've learned because every time I talk about how I love Apple that a lot of my fans are not Apple fans.

Speaker 0

Apple seems to be it it it creates great passion both ways out of people much like like things that I I I I believe that true true truly great things tend to spur people in both directions that some will love it, some will hate it, and Apple is one of those things.

Speaker 0

But the the thing I love about Apple is that their I love their design aesthetic.

Speaker 0

I I I feel like a lot of what I've learned about a being a designer has has come from looking at designs that I, as a designer, really appreciate.

Speaker 0

And the thing that Apple taught me this might might be some future podcast of design inspirations.

Speaker 0

But the thing Apple taught me is the idea of things have to do what they seem they do.

Speaker 0

Like, you you your intuition just just be correct.

Speaker 0

Make the thing do what people expect it to do.

Speaker 0

And the second thing is is importance of simplicity and that one of the easiest ways to get you know, how do you know it's the right button to push?

Speaker 0

Put one button on it, you know.

Speaker 0

Anyway, so I have an iPhone.

Speaker 0

In fact, the way it works in in my family by the way is I will always buy the newest iPhone and then the the latest iPhone goes to my wife and the iPhone after that goes to my daughter, my oldest daughter, Rachel.

Speaker 0

And so, like, every time I get a new iPhone, means everybody else get they shift and get the newest iPhone.

Speaker 0

So anyway but anyway, there was there is a app on the iPhone called Halftone.

Speaker 0

And Halftone is the premise of Halftone is it lets you take your pictures and convert it to look like an old, like, style comic book.

Speaker 0

For those that are unfamiliar with comic books, back in the day in fact, it's probably still true.

Speaker 0

They're made with a a system where there's lots of little tiny colored dots if you, like, you look close.

Speaker 0

And so back in the '60 I mean, now the dots are pretty small and, you know, it's it's hard.

Speaker 0

And you have to really look with the magnifying glass, I think, to see the dots.

Speaker 0

But back in the day, the dots were a little bit bigger.

Speaker 0

And so there's a very distinctive look to a lot of comics, especially like the sixties and seventies.

Speaker 0

And halftone was trying to give your pictures that comic book look.

Speaker 0

So I love comic books.

Speaker 0

I love iPhone apps.

Speaker 0

I like taking pictures, and I like goofing around and making funny things up.

Speaker 0

So so we were celebrating something.

Speaker 0

I I forget what it was.

Speaker 0

Wizards does this thing where when we have a success or magic does this thing.

Speaker 0

We have a success, they'll they'll have cake.

Speaker 0

And so we were having cake for something.

Speaker 0

Some said it did well.

Speaker 0

I'm I'm not sure.

Speaker 0

Zen Decar 或者 Scar's Mirage。

Zen Decar or Scar's Mirage.

Speaker 0

Anyway, some said it done well.

Speaker 0

We had cake.

Speaker 0

And so I went to up to the bridge.

Speaker 0

So all of our conference rooms at Wizards are named mostly have geek names.

Speaker 0

You know, we have the matrix and the ones in their r and d are named after magic cards.

Speaker 0

We have, like, Ivory Tower.

Speaker 0

Anyway, all around the building, they're they're named after different things.

Speaker 0

I mean, each each department got to name their own.

Speaker 0

And so sometimes you can kinda guess who named it by based on what what section of company it's in.

Speaker 0

Like, double jeopardy is near legal.

Speaker 0

But anyway, so the bridge is the main room upstairs that like, you know, if the if the president is going to have a big official meeting, they always meet in the bridge.

Speaker 0

The Bridge is a Star Trek reference for those that somehow don't know that.

Speaker 0

Anyway, so we go to the bridge, there's cake, and Ethan is eating cake.

Speaker 0

Now I believe at this point, Ethan is relatively new being that it started in March.

Speaker 0

He must have just he could not have been here more than a month or so because I think he started I I think it's very short after he started.

Speaker 0

But anyway, I took a picture of Ethan eating a piece of cake.

Speaker 0

And then I decided that it'd be fun to make a a little comic out of it with my halftone app.

Speaker 0

More more because I was just entertained by the app.

Speaker 0

And I I don't even think when I first made it, my intent was to show it to was to put it anywhere on the Internet.

Speaker 0

I just thought it was funny, and then it entertained me enough.

Speaker 0

I'm like, oh, whatever.

Speaker 0

I'll tweet it.

Speaker 0

So in fact, it's possible before I tweeted that the halftone version, I just tweeted a picture of Ethan eating the cake, which I think is what happened.

Speaker 0

I think I just tweeted a picture of Ethan eating the cake, and later I went back and I changed it.

Speaker 0

I thought it was funny, I posted it.

Speaker 0

I got decent response.

Speaker 0

And at that point, be aware, it wasn't a thing.

Speaker 0

It wasn't like it was just I I made a comic.

Speaker 0

I thought it was funny, I posted it.

Speaker 0

And then the next day, I posted another one.

Speaker 0

And I just for that week, I know, every day I posted one because it was just I was being entertained by it and there were so many possibilities of things I could do.

Speaker 0

And and then I think by the end of the week, was like, this isn't that hard to do.

Speaker 0

So little little background.

Speaker 0

For those who don't know, I mean I mean, obviously, welcome to to me.

Speaker 0

I have a company I have a comedy writing background.

Speaker 0

In college, for example I mean, in high school, I I started doing a lot of playwriting and they were mostly comedies.

Speaker 0

In college, I started an improv troupe.

Speaker 0

I started a writing workshop that did sketch comedy.

Speaker 0

I did stand up.

Speaker 0

And so I did a lot of different things with comedy.

Speaker 0

I eventually went out to Los Angeles.

Speaker 0

I tried to I I wanted to be a sitcom writer.

Speaker 0

I mean, long term, wanted to create TV shows, but I wanted to write comedy.

Speaker 0

I mean, Roseanne's the one show I was on staff on.

Speaker 0

So, I mean, I my background is I like writing comedy.

Speaker 0

I have a lot of background in comedy, and I've always been fascinated by comic strips.

Speaker 0

I love comic strips.

Speaker 0

I think comic strips are cool.

Speaker 0

And I I remember thinking that one of the things I always thought would be awesome to do was to have a comic strip.

Speaker 0

Now the really thing that was getting my way, for those of you who've ever seen my one piece of magic art, look at me at the DCI, which is I can't draw.

Speaker 0

And people go, oh, but, you know, x k c d, he's a stick figures.

Speaker 0

不。

No.

Speaker 0

He's much better at drawing than I am.

Speaker 0

Much better.

Speaker 0

I am very limited in my drawing abilities.

Speaker 0

I mean, for example, look at me at DCI.

Speaker 0

Here's how I did it.

Speaker 0

I I have an art style that very few people use.

Speaker 0

Very few.

Speaker 0

I actually drew that 60 times and then picked my favorite one.

Speaker 0

So also, by the way, those who don't know, a little trivia about looking at me, I'm DCI.

Speaker 0

I I got paid a dollar.

Speaker 0

Originally, they were gonna pay me full price, like a full whatever price.

Speaker 0

And I said, no.

Speaker 0

That's crazy because I can't draw.

Speaker 0

And I said, look.

Speaker 0

Just pay me a dollar.

Speaker 0

They had to pay me something to own it.

Speaker 0

And then they gave me a dollar, and they gave me a check.

Speaker 0

Oh, this is a funny story.

Speaker 0

So I get a call from I get a call from the finance department.

Speaker 0

So they say to me, so it says here that we owe you a dollar check.

Speaker 0

And I I say yes.

Speaker 0

And they go, well, could we give that to you in cash?

Speaker 0

I'm like, no.

Speaker 0

I want I want a check.

Speaker 0

He goes, do do you understand that it costs us more than a dollar to make a check?

Speaker 0

I'm like, yeah.

Speaker 0

I I sure.

Speaker 0

I but they were gonna pay me a lot of money.

Speaker 0

I volunteered to just get $1 to save us some money.

Speaker 0

And so, you know, yeah, give me my check.

Speaker 0

And he's like, why why do you want a check?

Speaker 0

And I'm like, because I wanna frame it.

Speaker 0

And he's like, you're not even going to cash it?

Speaker 0

I'm like, yeah.

Speaker 0

You're gonna be off a dollar at the end of the year.

Speaker 0

Anyway, I still have my check framed with my art, my original art.

Speaker 0

Look at me in the DCI in my in my den.

Speaker 0

I have four pieces of art, by the way, for those that truly care.

Speaker 0

I have the original Morrow, who's named after me, and I bought the art from Stuart Griffin.

Speaker 0

And by the way, here are interesting.

Speaker 0

See, today's podcast is me starting on a topic and just drifting off.

Speaker 0

一

One

Speaker 1

of the interesting

Speaker 0

things about Morrow is the painting wasn't made to be a magic painting.

Speaker 0

It was just painted to be a painting.

Speaker 0

Sue Ann Harkey, who was the Mirage art director, saw it, thought it was cool and bought the rights to the image.

Speaker 0

And then we later figured out where to put it.

Speaker 0

But, you know, what it means is it's a full size piece of art.

Speaker 0

It's not most magic art if you ever seen is is pretty small because it just needs to go on card.

Speaker 0

So it's, you know, it's normally it's like, you know, eight inches square or something or, you know, eight by 10 inches, whatever the correct pro proportions is.

Speaker 0

So I have Marrow, I have LookMeInDCI, I have Jester Sombrero, which was the packaging image from Unglued, and then I have Mai's, the package image or one of the package images from unhinged.

Speaker 0

Mai's, by the way, was a birthday present for me from Matt Cavada, who drew the card and is a friend of mine, which was very cool.

Speaker 0

Anyway, sorry.

Speaker 0

Deviating back.

Speaker 0

So I always had want to do a comic strip, but was hampered by the fact that I can't draw.

Speaker 0

And watching over the years, there's been many people who've done magic comic strips.

Speaker 0

You know, I remember one of one of the famous ones was called UG Madness, of which I showed up as a character as a little little devil with little wings and, you know, MGD Pro made a comic.

Speaker 0

There's a lot of people that made comics.

Speaker 0

And I've always thought it was funny that,

Speaker 1

you know, it'd need to

Speaker 0

see a comic.

Speaker 0

But one of the things I always wondered that that I had never seen or that maybe it exists, I haven't seen it, is a daily comic.

Speaker 0

So it's kinda like a, you know, far side ish thing.

Speaker 0

Kind of comics I've always enjoyed have been one of's, have been like single frame.

Speaker 0

I like the far side.

Speaker 0

I mean, I I like, hey, I like Calvin Hobbs and all that.

Speaker 0

I mean, I I I think the the three the three beat ones are fun.

Speaker 0

I just some of for me, I always imagined doing a one panel magic comic.

Speaker 0

And like I said, I had this I had the limitation of my inability to draw.

Speaker 0

So anyway, I think what what clicked was I started taking pictures and turning them into these little things and they they were funny.

Speaker 0

It's sort of, you know, photo comic.

Speaker 0

And and it never dawned on me before that I could that I could instead of drawing, I could use pictures.

Speaker 0

And that once that hit me, I'm like, oh my goodness.

Speaker 0

Oh my goodness.

Speaker 0

I could make a comic trip.

Speaker 0

I found a way to get around my huge limitation.

Speaker 0

And so I started making the strip.

Speaker 0

It was mostly I don't know.

Speaker 0

It's just I mean, I I think the reason I did it was was many fold.

Speaker 0

I won't pick a number because I as I I tell you, I'm not sure how many of the number's gonna be.

Speaker 0

So first off, I like writing comedy.

Speaker 0

I miss writing comedy.

Speaker 0

You know, there's just not a lot I mean, I I try to put humor in my blog and in my in my column and, you know, in in my hopefully, my podcast.

Speaker 0

I try to do humor, but it's not a consistent thing.

Speaker 0

And that I think part of me, part of my brain just like the idea of, you know, just what if you could try to be funny every day, you know, and and that the challenge of that.

Speaker 0

The second is that I've been trying to do more stuff in social media that broadens kinda what I do.

Speaker 0

And one of the things I I've been very conscious of is I I got onto Tumblr.

Speaker 0

Oh, real quickly.

Speaker 0

For those that like that like my blog, my blog 100% is a result of my Tales From The Pit comic.

Speaker 0

Let me explain.

Speaker 0

So what happened is I start putting my comic out on Twitter, and I think it was Evan.

Speaker 0

Evan says to me he said, oh, why don't you collect your comics somewhere that you know, so that people can see them?

Speaker 0

And he suggests Tumblr.

Speaker 0

And I'm like, oh, I I never I never heard of Tumblr.

Speaker 0

And he goes, oh, well, yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It's really easy to sign up.

Speaker 0

And and then a couple of people talked to me about it.

Speaker 0

I think it came up a couple of times.

Speaker 0

Oh, you should have posted this on Tumblr.

Speaker 0

So I'm like, oh, okay.

Speaker 0

I guess.

Speaker 0

Let me see.

Speaker 0

And then I got there.

Speaker 0

Was easy to sign up and so I got it and I started just every day I put my comics there.

Speaker 0

I think there was an app for it.

Speaker 0

And so it's it's very easy for me to do.

Speaker 0

It must have been an app for it because I always one thing about my comic, by the way, it's 100% produced in my phone.

Speaker 0

The pictures are from my phone.

Speaker 0

The the halftone's in my phone.

Speaker 0

I upload it from my phone.

Speaker 0

Like, that that the comic touches nothing but my phone.

Speaker 0

It's completely generated by my phone.

Speaker 0

And so oh, by the way, Evan I I thought that's I'm just dropping your name.

Speaker 0

It's Evan Irwin of of the magic show.

Speaker 0

And, anyway, a bunch of people suggested Tumblr.

Speaker 0

I said, okay.

Speaker 0

I figured out what it was, and so I started putting them up on Tumblr.

Speaker 0

And then there's a little feature in Tumblr that says, can people ask you questions?

Speaker 0

And I was like, oh, okay.

Speaker 0

I guess people ask me questions.

Speaker 0

Little did I know I had no idea what happened when I yes.

Speaker 0

People ask me questions.

Speaker 0

Anyway, the the can people ask you a question?

Speaker 0

Me clicking yes.

Speaker 0

That my whole blog came out of that, which which it's funny.

Speaker 0

The the comic's now a little tiny part of it and the all the question answer was a major part, but but but Tales From The Pit is directly responsible for the blog And one of these podcasts, I will do the blogger talk podcast, but that's not today.

Speaker 0

Today is Tales From The Pit.

Speaker 0

So anyway, I like the idea that I could challenge myself every day.

Speaker 0

I really I mean, there have been magic comics, but I I felt like I just wanted a magic comic that exists that was just daily, you know, that every day and and could, you know, could capture on whatever that was going on.

Speaker 0

Like, I wanted something that was kind of could be topical times.

Speaker 0

Now be aware, there's a huge limitation I have, which is I work for the company.

Speaker 0

I'm I'm one of the spokespeople.

Speaker 0

So the funny thing for me is I often come up with comics that would be hilarious, but they're not you know, I do not have the freedom just to publish any comic I want.

Speaker 0

In fact, I every once in a while, I'll I'll put a comic and I'll run it by, you know, people at work and go, what do you think?

Speaker 0

And they're like, yo, you can't publish that.

Speaker 0

So deep in the recesses of my brain, I I've made some comics that that are funny, but maybe not appropriate.

Speaker 0

If I if I was outside the system, if I wasn't, you know, working for the company, maybe I I'd publish some of those.

Speaker 0

But anyway, so I like the challenge.

Speaker 0

I really like the idea that magic would have a daily comic.

Speaker 0

And and there are some comics out there.

Speaker 0

I'm not I don't wanna diss any of the existing comics.

Speaker 0

I I I I always enjoy when I see magic comics, and a lot of people do very fun work, and they're awesome to see.

Speaker 0

Oh, the other thing, by the way, is as I'm trying to one of the things I'm I'm I'm big on is trying to understand social media, and that one of the things I realized was that words only get you so far.

Speaker 0

That, like, I look a lot about how much I get retweeted and reblogged and sort of where my messages go and how what kind of impact they have.

Speaker 0

And one of the things as I experimented, I realized that I was trying to sort of create a product that had a different feel to it.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I have Twitter, and I answer questions on Tumblr and Google Plus.

Speaker 0

And, I mean, I do different things.

Speaker 0

I do this podcast, but the comic is nice in that it it's something that's very like, sizable.

Speaker 0

It's visual.

Speaker 0

You know, it it has some different qualities to it.

Speaker 0

And, like, when I really get a comic that, you know, just sort of hits one out of the park, it gets re blogged all over the place.

Speaker 0

So that that is kinda cool.

Speaker 0

They're just this image, you know, students associate.

Speaker 0

So that's why kinda why I started.

Speaker 0

I mean, I like I said, I didn't mean to start.

Speaker 0

I kinda accidentally did it and then just sort of said, oh, I could do this.

Speaker 0

Now here's an important thing to understand about the comic, by the way, is I I do not spend a lot of time on the comic.

Speaker 0

I'm a busy man.

Speaker 0

And, I mean, basically, what I do here here's my thing is sometimes I'll take pictures and and I go, oh, this is a funny picture.

Speaker 0

I'll come up with something.

Speaker 0

Sometimes I get a joke and then I hunt down what I need.

Speaker 0

Usually, I make up a joke, hunt down images.

Speaker 0

That's why I've been doing a lot more magic images is that it's just it's easier to do at home.

Speaker 0

Because a lot of times, I'll like, I'll wake up and go, okay.

Speaker 0

I gotta make a comic.

Speaker 0

You know, I'll make a comic before I but while I'm getting ready.

Speaker 0

And that's, by the way, as a as a little side note.

Speaker 0

I do not spend a lot of time in this.

Speaker 0

I know that the the quality veers wildly all over the place.

Speaker 0

You know, this is kind of thing where it's my job and I could I would fine tune them and everyone would be I I think the overall quality level will be much higher.

Speaker 0

But the fact that I spend, you know, sometimes five minutes to come up with it, I I know that there there is a a variance.

Speaker 0

But the thing I do love also is trying to find a way to be topical and make jokes about kind of be able to have some fun at whatever magic is going on.

Speaker 0

And I try whenever I can to be in the moment and do jokes that are topical.

Speaker 0

I I don't always sometimes.

Speaker 0

Some of them are more, you know, I could do the joke anytime.

Speaker 0

But usually, there's something I can make a joke about that's that's a current thing I I try to do.

Speaker 0

So let's talk a little bit about some of.

Speaker 0

So once again, I didn't set out to do recurring things.

Speaker 0

I just have comedy in my blood and, like, when I hit something that I know is funny, then I just go like, oh, okay.

Speaker 0

I mean and one of part about trying to come up with comments every day is I realized that some days, you know, something will come and be, some days it's not as easy.

Speaker 0

And so one thing think we're having some some running stuff is it just makes it easier when I'm having struggling one day that sometimes I have stuff I can go to.

Speaker 0

对。

Okay.

Speaker 0

So my biggest reoccurring comic was the another day for a particular another day of productivity lost.

Speaker 0

So what happened early on when I was doing the comic was I did a lot of r and d.

Speaker 0

If you look about the the evolution of my comic, early on, most of the jokes were about r and d itself.

Speaker 0

And what I learned eventually was that some of that's good, but that I I ended up centering more of the jokes in the in the game itself and less about us making the game.

Speaker 0

I I still do R and D jokes, and it's it's still part of the comic.

Speaker 0

That's one the things, by way, I realized about the comic was the breadth of things I could do because I can make fan about the game.

Speaker 0

I can make fun of R and D making the game.

Speaker 0

I can make fun of the audience reacting to the game.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

I can make fun of elements of the game, art from the game, cards from the game.

Speaker 0

I get cards talking to each other or where are they now and all sorts of different stuff I could do.

Speaker 0

The the the magic is a pretty deep depth for doing comedy, by the way.

Speaker 0

Mean, I probably because there's a lot there.

Speaker 0

So I was doing early on a lot of, like, r and d.

Speaker 0

I've taken a lot of pictures of r and d.

Speaker 0

Like, if you look at the the first maybe six months of you may of not even the card.

Speaker 0

Of Tales From The Pit, it's mostly, like, shots of R and D.

Speaker 0

And I would pose shots.

Speaker 0

The other thing I've learned is posing shots are tough.

Speaker 0

I mean, one of the things that's interesting about doing a comic is it made me have a lot of respect for visual storytelling.

Speaker 0

Because for example, mostly what I'm doing when I'm doing jokes is to set a punch line.

Speaker 0

And ideally, you want the setup on the left and the punch line on the right.

Speaker 0

So if I take the picture wrong, sometimes I have to cross the word balloons, which is a pain.

Speaker 0

But anyway, today is me just all over the board.

Speaker 0

It's just Mark Mark almost my topic today should be Mark just goes dachshund and then he gets to work.

Speaker 0

So the productivity loss was just I took a picture of of people playing, just playing games.

Speaker 0

I'm like, what should this be?

Speaker 0

And then somehow, thought it was funny that, like, oftentimes, just in R and D, we'll go off on topics and, you know, it's a bunch of bright guys who who are all pretty geeky and, like, we'll just talk about whatever.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

And I thought it was funny and I thought it might be funny to capture that.

Speaker 0

And the productivity lost line was just me joking like, yeah.

Speaker 0

You know, sometimes we just go off.

Speaker 0

And then and the funny thing is the first one went over okay, but I I I thought it was funny so I did the second one.

Speaker 0

And the second one was the one that that he that, like, that was the weaponize the ponies one.

Speaker 0

But we're talking about the transformers versus the my little pony, which is funny, by the way, for those behind the scenes is I I do a lot of pop culture references, and somebody at work had said to me, hey.

Speaker 0

Come on.

Speaker 0

You know, you should listen.

Speaker 0

Someone like, you know, why do you make more references about about stuff we do?

Speaker 0

And I'm like, well, hey.

Speaker 0

I make a lot of magic references.

Speaker 0

And so I thought it was funny.

Speaker 0

I did a I did a cartoon where I was, like, referencing, like, Hasbro properties because both transformers and my little pony are Hasbro property.

Speaker 0

Anyway, that's me making kind of an in joke.

Speaker 0

And so that's where that one came from.

Speaker 0

What are the other running jokes?

Speaker 0

I think I just came up with something that I like.

Speaker 0

Like so so you think you can Biomance, which has become my there's a style of joke which is called the what do you get when you cross this with that joke?

Speaker 0

And I think those are funny.

Speaker 0

So, like, this just became a way to tell that kind of joke because the whole shtick of the Simic is they they cross breed things.

Speaker 0

Like Liliana, ask Liliana came about because I just thought I had a picture of Liliana sitting in a chair, the the one from from Innosrad, and I just needed to use it for something because I'm a lot of what I do is I'll just pick a picture and go make this funny.

Speaker 0

And so I picked I picked that picture, and I said, okay.

Speaker 0

Make make it funny.

Speaker 0

And I was trying to just come out something that I don't know.

Speaker 0

The the a lot of comedy for me is when you take different ideas and take two things that don't seem to belong together that, you know, the a lot of comedy comes from juxtaposition.

Speaker 0

In fact, it's funny.

Speaker 0

I you know, they used to do stand up.

Speaker 0

One of the things that is very funny when you get around people that write comedy is this desire to understand comedy.

Speaker 0

And so I spent hours and hours sort of debating, like, what why something is funny and what's funny about it.

Speaker 0

And one of the things that comes up a lot is juxtaposition.

Speaker 0

Is that kind of one of the things that makes things funny is taking two things that don't belong together and forcing them together.

Speaker 0

And so ask Liliana with me just going, what is the worst job you could have Liliana do?

Speaker 0

And I'm like, advice columnist.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

And then just it was funny enough that, you know, I've done a bunch of them just because it was funny.

Speaker 0

And like I said, a lot of them I don't know where they come from.

Speaker 0

Like, I have a a running gag where Nicole Bolas does print phone calls.

Speaker 0

I like, I have no idea where that comes from.

Speaker 0

It just spoke to me.

Speaker 0

I think maybe because he's like a he's a he's a mastermind.

Speaker 0

You know, he's a devilish puppet master, and I'm like, you know, that for fun, what we do, blow off steam, you he had to make prank calls.

Speaker 0

Like I said, I don't know why you know?

Speaker 0

And then I had I have I have a series with with The Mizzet being a stand up comic, maybe playing at anyway, I there's just things I think are funny.

Speaker 0

I I don't know quite where where the stuff comes from.

Speaker 0

I mean, the only thing I do try is to shake up the kinds of humor because I I think just like my column or like this podcast or like my my anything really is I try to do a diversity of material.

Speaker 0

And I mean, I try to make it funny every day, but sometimes it's more slapsticky.

Speaker 0

I do puns.

Speaker 0

Sometimes, like, I I love doing kind of like the you gotta really know magic, get this reference ones.

Speaker 0

I don't do those puns, but, you know, once you're like, you really got no magic to get this joke.

Speaker 0

A little bit is fun, and and I definitely having a good time.

Speaker 0

It's funny because like I said, I just passed my five hundredth comic or by the time you will have seen this, I will pass my five hundredth comic.

Speaker 0

And I do two fifty a year because it's fifty weeks.

Speaker 0

I I take two weeks off and do the best of.

Speaker 0

So I do fifty weeks, five comic, you know, one every day every weekday.

Speaker 0

So it's 250 comics a year.

Speaker 0

And I just passed two years, so hit my five hundredth comic, which by the way, kinda boggles my mind that I've done 500 comics is is I remember when I posted my my four hundred and seventy fifth or something, Eric I don't know Eric Aaron Forsyth, his response on Twitter that day was, I don't know if I've done 475 of anything.

Speaker 0

So but but I I guess if you follow along, you know, between I mean, I I my my comic I'm not a comic.

Speaker 0

My my column later this summer is gonna do its six hundredth column, which is also kind of mind boggling.

Speaker 0

But I guess I'm just stubborn in that I pick things I like and I do them.

Speaker 0

And like I said, the comic's been interesting in that.

Speaker 0

It is some days I wake up and I curse the comic because I'm like, you know, I haven't come up with the comic.

Speaker 0

But but the thing I love is I love the fact that I forced myself to do it.

Speaker 0

I I think one of the things they say about the way to sort of keep your brain active is just make it, you know in some ways, think of it as a workout for my brain that, like, I'm in a job where, like, my brain matters.

Speaker 0

Like, I have to be creative and I have to sort of, you know, mentally be there.

Speaker 0

And so in some ways, I feel like when I wake up, doing my comic is, like, my my little mental calisthenics.

Speaker 0

And also, the thing I find hilarious is I'll wake up with no idea what I'm doing.

Speaker 0

I mean, sometimes I have some idea, sometimes I've done it the day before, sometimes I've taken a picture.

Speaker 0

So sometimes I have an idea what I'm doing, but other times I have no idea.

Speaker 0

And it's always amazing for me when I wake up and I have no idea, I have no idea what I'm doing, and then, like, I sent it a comic I'm really proud of, and I'm like, that feels really good.

Speaker 0

I mean, it's and and it's a nice little simple thing, you know, that I mean, taking I love my columns, but they take a while to write, you know.

Speaker 0

And even this podcast takes thirty minutes.

Speaker 0

My comic doesn't have that kind of time.

So, anyway, I parked in the parking lot or my in the space.

Speaker 0

I I I guess what today was really talking about was I'm hoping a little insight other than the fact that I get off topic a lot is that I I have a love of of creativity.

Speaker 0

I love coming up with stuff.

Speaker 0

I love humor.

Speaker 0

I love magic.

Speaker 0

I like fun like, make fun of magic.

Speaker 0

And that I think the comic and the reason I make the comic is I I want my social media to sort of portray me many faceted and that, you know, my com is one facet of me.

Speaker 0

My podcast is another.

Speaker 0

My blog is another.

Speaker 0

And my I think my comic is just a different way.

Speaker 0

It's kinda my funny side to side that kinda looks at things and says, isn't this kinda funny?

Speaker 0

And so, anyway, I I enjoy doing it.

Speaker 0

I I'm it seems that people seem to like it, so I will continue to do it.

Speaker 0

And, anyway, that's that's that's today's.

Speaker 0

I don't know.

Speaker 0

I'm more reminiscing.

Speaker 0

I think from time to time, I like to sort of introspective look at my own stuff.

Speaker 0

I don't do that tons.

Speaker 0

Most of the time, I'll look at magic as a whole, but I feel every once in a while, it's nice to sort of self examine.

Speaker 0

And and one of the things I always talk about writing in general is writing helps you understand who you are as a person.

Speaker 0

And it's not just writing.

Speaker 0

Communication helps you understand who you are as a person.

Speaker 0

I I think my, you know, my blog and my writing and my podcast and my comic, all of them help me understand kind of who I am and that a lot of how I understand things come from me trying to express.

Speaker 0

So anyway, a little deeper than you thought for me talking about my comic.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

So I'm now at work.

Speaker 0

I gotta I gotta go.

Speaker 0

So thanks for listening all about Tales From The Pit.

Speaker 0

Tales From The Pit.

Speaker 0

I always mess that up.

Speaker 0

It's Tales From The Pit making fun of Tales From The Crypt which is a old old style comic from the fifties with horror.

Speaker 0

Anyway, it was fun talking about my comic, and I guess it's time to go make the magic.
