Speaker 1

That's day five on our trip.

Speaker 1

But we're actually recording this at home, the day before we leave because we are excellent planners.

Speaker 0

Well, this time we are.

Speaker 1

We'll have an extra day before Angie flies home, and we'll give you guys a big recap of our adventure in the Alps, play some sound bites for you, hopefully, introduce you to some of the runners that we met up with over here who are listeners of the podcast.

Speaker 1

Angie, what else is going on?

Speaker 0

Well, we just got news that the Cape Town Marathon went on without a hitch this year, and so they officially became the newest world marathon major.

Speaker 1

So does that mean we have to go run it someday?

Speaker 0

I mean, have to?

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

I mean, it'd be nice.

Speaker 1

I would definitely do that, Scott, on my e bike.

I finished in three hours four minutes and forty one seconds over five minutes faster than my 37 year young self did back then.

Speaker 0

He says, I'm so grateful to be able to race given that I couldn't even walk just over a year ago.

Speaker 0

Speaker 1

Wow.

Speaker 1

That's great to hear that.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

We actually had Tony on the podcast a couple years ago.

Speaker 1

对。

Yep.

Speaker 1

But, yeah, I'm glad he's been able to build back and keep doing what he loves.

Speaker 0

Showing his younger self how it's done.

Speaker 1

We're gonna go ahead and play our ask the coach q and a.

Speaker 1

We're joined again by coach Abby Omerza, who's the head coach here at MTA.

Speaker 1

She's a Boston qualifier and ultra runner, certified running coach, and she lives near Chicago, Illinois.

Speaker 1

And of course, Angie introduced herself on the last podcast episode, so I don't know if we have to go through that again.

Speaker 0

I should hope not.

Speaker 1

We do have an about page on our website, so if you wanna see more details about who we are, what we like to do.

Speaker 1

Anyway, here's our ask the coach q and a.

Speaker 1

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 1

We are here for part two of ask the coach q and a, something that we enjoy doing every year, and we're usually joined by a different coach on our team.

Speaker 1

This is a special year.

Speaker 1

We have our head coach, coach Abby.

Speaker 1

Welcome back to the podcast.

Speaker 2

你好。

Hi.

Speaker 2

I'm so excited to be here.

Speaker 1

Abby is a real person, and if you call, schedule a call with, our team, you're probably gonna get her.

Speaker 1

And so you've you've talked to, I don't know, dozens and dozens and dozens of people in our community now, people that found us probably through the podcast.

Speaker 1

What's that experience been like?

Speaker 2

Oh, I love it.

Speaker 2

It's so much fun to talk to people from all over the country and all over the world and hear their experiences with running, talk about their goals and what they want to achieve.

Speaker 2

I enjoy every phone call.

Speaker 1

Awesome.

Speaker 2

And I'm starting to get, calls that they're like, oh, I'm so excited that I get to talk to coach Abby.

Speaker 2

It makes me feel like a very minor star here.

Speaker 0

You are.

Speaker 0

You're a running celebrity.

Speaker 1

不错。

Nice.

Speaker 1

Well, you bring a lot of knowledge and expertise to the work that you do and to the calls and, also to the podcast.

Speaker 1

So we're excited to jump into these questions here.

Speaker 1

We're gonna cover a lot of topics.

Speaker 1

We're gonna start with fueling for an ultra.

Speaker 1

This comes from Elizabeth.

Speaker 1

She's a bit of a conundrum that a lot of us experience, I guess, when we're looking at fueling for ultras because we wanna avoid processed foods as a whole, you know, in general.

Speaker 1

But there's also a lot of junk food that's consumed during these ultra marathons because you gotta pack in the calories.

Speaker 1

So here's her question.

Speaker 1

Basically, what are the overall health impacts of using junk food or ultra processed foods as fuel during my ultra marathon training.

Speaker 1

She says she doesn't really do gels that well.

Speaker 1

She tried to train her gut, doesn't really work.

Speaker 1

And this actually gets kind of funny.

Speaker 1

She says, for solid foods, I'm afraid the ones I can manage to eat are often higher in saturated fat or fiber than I want to be eating for like eight plus hours.

Speaker 1

Mini Snickers bars, fruit snacks, sweetened dried fruit and dates, frosted donuts, candy, etcetera.

Speaker 1

I already worry about the impact of ultra processed foods and sugar in my everyday life.

Speaker 1

So when I put together my drop bag for a race, it looks like I'm expecting trick or treaters.

Speaker 1

She says, I feel a little queasy imagining the long term impact on my health.

Speaker 1

How is it possible that chugging candy corn for several hours a week is okay?

Speaker 1

Well, normally it would not be.

Speaker 1

I do like candy corn, though.

Speaker 1

I used to get it at my great grandma's house for Halloween.

Speaker 0

It's a polarizing candy.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

That's just true.

Speaker 1

Know, it kinda tastes a little bit like wax.

Speaker 2

I love it during an ultra marathon, though.

Speaker 2

Like, I'm normally not a fan, but in ultra marathon, if there's candy corn, I'm gonna eat it, and it's gonna taste good.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

It all depends.

Speaker 1

Speaking of junk food, like Pop Tarts during an ultra marathon, oh, that is money.

Speaker 2

I haven't tried that one.

Speaker 2

I like the Uncrustables.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Which again, not something I normally eat, but during a race, it's just exactly what I need.

Speaker 2

所以

So

Speaker 1

对

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

So how do we how do we resolve the tension?

Speaker 2

Well, we can't speak as nutritionists, so I can't well, can't I speak.

Speaker 2

I just can't necessarily speak with authority about the long term benefits or risks.

Speaker 2

But I would say to reframe it a little bit because junk food just means food that does more harm than good to our bodies.

Speaker 2

And what might not be good for your body in normal life might be good for it when you're running an ultramarathon.

Speaker 2

So if it's what your body needs, then it's not junk food anymore.

Speaker 2

So that can apply to things like candy corn and Uncrustables and Pop Tarts.

Speaker 2

That if it's giving your body what it needs, your body handles it a little bit differently when you're moving for hours than it does when you eat it and then sit for hours.

Speaker 2

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 2

So, you know, you'd kinda think, yes, it's hours at a time.

Speaker 2

Sometimes during a week, you go and do one or two long runs and you're eating this.

Speaker 2

And then you do a race and you're eating this way for hours and hours.

Speaker 2

But in the grand scheme of things, that's actually a very small percentage of what you eat during a normal week and a very small percentage of the time spent eating that kind of food.

Speaker 2

So it's not really quite as bad as it sounds.

Speaker 2

There are a lot of people who are a big fan of real food, but, you know, I remember reading about Scott Jerich eating tortillas and guacamole during ultras, and that worked for him.

Speaker 2

It wouldn't work for me.

Speaker 2

So it's just figure out what works for you, and there's there's just a lot of options.

Speaker 2

And sometimes the candy is good.

Speaker 2

Sometimes it's not.

Speaker 2

Sometimes the gels are good, and sometimes they're not.

Speaker 2

During the recent Coca Dona two fifty, Rachel, she won, she said that she ate a lot of mashed potatoes, and that got her through.

Speaker 2

Wow.

Speaker 2

And that's really a pretty good option because it digests easily.

Speaker 2

And if you're worried about it being too much pure sugar, which sometimes that can cause gut issues too, the mashed potatoes are sometimes gentle, but still easily digestible and get you those carbohydrates quickly.

Speaker 2

So it's always good to experiment and have options during an ultra because you don't know for sure what's going to work at any given moment.

Speaker 2

Sometimes it's gonna be the candy corn, sometimes the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and sometimes potatoes are the only thing that are gonna go down and stay down.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

A 100%.

Speaker 0

I think your body is prioritizing foods.

Speaker 0

It needs carbs.

Speaker 0

It needs calories, and so it's not gonna discriminate between like, oh, this is something bad coming down the hatch.

Speaker 0

没错。

Like, no.

Speaker 0

It's it's just utilizing it in the moment right there.

Speaker 0

So like you said, it's not really the time to worry about the source of the carb or the fuel.

Speaker 0

It sounds like Elizabeth eats a very healthy diet the remainder of the time.

Speaker 0

And so, you know, I think there can be sometimes an overemphasis on clean eating, which can sometimes get to be a disorder.

Speaker 0

When you're, you know, worrying about every single bite of food, where it came from, how clean it is, how processed it is, that can add a lot of unnecessary stress.

Speaker 0

And I'm not saying that, you know, just go hog wild and have pizza for dinner every day or go through the McDonald's drive through.

Speaker 0

I'm saying there is a place for the eightyten approach.

Speaker 0

If 80% of your diet is healthy, Sorry.

Speaker 0

Eighty twenty.

Speaker 0

Was about

Speaker 1

to ain't math.

Speaker 0

Of like the eighty twenty approach.

Speaker 0

If 80% of your diet is healthy and you're an active person, then the rest of the 20% is not gonna have such a dramatic negative effect.

Speaker 0

Now I will say that if you're eating a lot of sugar for hours on end, maybe take, you know, something from Courtney DeWalter's playbook and brush your teeth in between, which it can be really nice to freshen up the mouth.

Speaker 0

And I think for dental hygiene, just having a lot of sugar on your teeth for hours on end is probably not the best.

Speaker 0

And, you know, your mouth can just kind of feel nasty after a while.

Speaker 0

So that might be something if you want to put in your drop bag, brush your teeth, periodically during an ultra, making sure that the sugar is not sitting on your teeth long term.

Speaker 0

But, you know, like you said, Abby, I mean, there's things that I eat during an ultra that I never touch in my daily life.

Speaker 0

Like some of the my most favorite fuel was Mountain Dew, like in the later parts of a 50 miler.

Speaker 0

Like, the caffeine, the sugar just hit my bloodstream.

Speaker 0

You know, I felt amazing for the next five miles.

Speaker 1

Angie

Angie doesn't normally do the dew.

Speaker 0

I don't do the dew.

Speaker 0

The rules change a bit when you're in a race, when you're out there working hard and your body is just needing the calories.

Speaker 1

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Speaker 1

It's not normal to be out there burning so many calories all at once, So you gotta replace them somehow.

Speaker 1

And and that's pretty much what all the, you know, the pros do.

Speaker 1

Scott Durek might be the exception.

Speaker 1

By the way, if anyone has not read his book, Eat and Run, his first book, it's a great book.

Speaker 1

He of course is vegetarian.

Speaker 0

Think I he's vegan, isn't he?

Speaker 1

Is he?

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 2

I think so.

Speaker 2

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

So he's pretty strict about what he eats, and, you know, it it worked for him.

Speaker 1

Here's a interesting question about, nutrition at altitude.

Speaker 1

This comes from Sarah.

Speaker 1

She says, I'm wondering how to plan my nutrition strategy for a race where she's gonna have 19 miles with 3,000 feet of climbing.

Speaker 1

The race starts at about 9,500 feet.

Speaker 1

I don't know what that is in meters, and tops out at 11,000 feet.

Speaker 1

Sounds like a race in Colorado because she lives out there.

Speaker 1

On training runs, I felt good with a gel every forty five minutes or so.

Speaker 1

As my runs get longer and during the race, how many gels is too many?

Speaker 1

Well, heard of an ultra runner one time doing 95 gels at Western States.

Speaker 1

That's too many, my book.

Speaker 1

She says, any strategies or guidance for this long of an effort at altitude?

Speaker 1

Thanks for your work to inspire runners all over the world.

Speaker 1

And that comes from Sarah.

Speaker 1

Angie makes me think of when you did the Leadville Trail Marathon.

Speaker 1

That was at extreme altitude.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yep.

Speaker 0

That was one of those that I had Mountain Dew.

Speaker 0

Remember you guys brought me a bottle of Mountain Dew?

Speaker 1

Oh, really?

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

One of the later aid stations.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

The fact that she lives in Colorado means she's gonna be somewhat acclimated already and has access to, you know, some of the elevation and trails, which is a really good place to start.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Abby, what what are your thoughts on her fueling strategy?

Speaker 2

Well, I don't have a lot of experience with altitude, so you can speak to whether that makes a significant difference.

Speaker 2

I was focused a little bit more on the climbing that because it's a lot of climbing, you're going slower.

Speaker 2

So you're out there longer, but you're also not burning through the calories as fast.

Speaker 2

So you may be able to get away with not eating quite as much or quite as often.

Speaker 2

I would still focus on making sure to eat frequently to stay ahead of it, but it might be smaller amounts every thirty to forty five minutes rather than an entire gel every forty five minutes.

Speaker 2

It could be just taking half a gel.

Speaker 2

I kind of, like, choose for those times because then if my stomach's not doing great, I can just get a couple in and then maybe another fifteen, twenty minutes down the road, another one or two, and that will keep me going for a long time.

Speaker 2

So it's good to experiment a bit, try a few different things besides the gels, and have just a few options on hand to kind of see how she's feeling in the moment and be able to adapt to it.

Speaker 2

The other thing to think about, one of the things that I'm seeing a lot in the literature lately about training your gut is to actually try to take in more during your long runs than you would during the same amount of time in a race.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

So kind of overtraining your gut is the goal, and that helps you to know what you can tolerate.

Speaker 2

You're almost trying to push the limit of what your gut can tolerate during your workouts.

Speaker 2

So it trains the gut to take it up more efficiently and also helps you find the limits like, okay.

Speaker 2

Doing, you know, two gels in an hour for several hours on end is just gonna be too much, but, you know, I could still do a little bit more than I thought I could, that kind of things.

Speaker 2

So it is a good idea since she's not going to be doing five to eight hour practices before this event to at least try to get in a little bit more concentrated nutrition during the workouts and see what works for her.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I was saying I was thinking as I read through it, I I feel like she's under fueling a bit, especially given, you know, being at altitude, your heart rate is gonna be sped up because of you're not getting as much oxygen, and so it's going to make your body have to work harder overall.

Speaker 0

And so that case, I think that her body would actually be burning more calories.

Speaker 0

And depending what the climbs are like, you know, they could be pretty grueling climbs.

Speaker 0

And sometimes people at altitude don't feel as hungry because the body is shunting blood away from the gut to the major muscle groups.

Speaker 0

And so the gut situation can feel more tricky.

Speaker 0

You're also more prone to dehydration.

Speaker 0

So I would say, Sarah, you know, make sure you're running with good running vest and have some options in there.

Speaker 0

You know, have the gels that you've been used to using and say, like, I'm going to take one of these every forty five minutes.

Speaker 0

And I think the idea that you had of just not having to consume the whole gel at once, maybe like every fifteen minutes, to get down like a third of it, and then alternate that with a sports drink that has electrolytes in it.

Speaker 0

Because sometimes your body can process fluids better than it can, like more solid calories.

Speaker 0

And have some chews that you can alternate too because I think it's all about variability.

Speaker 0

If your gut's not feeling good, the thought of choking down another gel can send some of us over the edge, so to speak.

Speaker 0

So having some good options and making sure, I would say, like every fifteen minutes, sure you're putting something in your mouth to get, you know, at least, you know, maybe like 10 grams of carbs every 15 at the very least.

Speaker 0

And then alternate a sports drink that has, you know, it's it's not like a zero calorie.

Speaker 0

It has sugar in it.

Speaker 0

It has electrolytes in it, because that's gonna help you stay hydrated, and it's gonna also be giving you some nutrition, especially if you're having trouble.

Speaker 0

And I know, like, when I'm on a climb, you know, sometimes you just don't feel like eating anything.

Speaker 0

You're just you're struggling to breathe.

Speaker 0

That was my experience in Colorado struggling to breathe.

Speaker 0

So I'm sure Sarah's gonna be in a lot better shape to take on this race.

Speaker 0

But just having a lot of options and make sure you start your fueling early because fuel that you don't take can't help you.

Speaker 0

And so start sooner than you think you need to start.

Speaker 0

So I would say, like, that first fifteen minutes, take your fuel.

Speaker 0

Thirty minutes, take your fuel, like just get on that roll and then supplement it with the aid stations where, you know, they might have some potato chips that might be kind of good for a salty break or, you know, grab some pretzels or whatever is sounding good at that point in time to kinda like counterbalance the sweet stuff that you're probably carrying with you.

Speaker 1

Oh, potato chips are awesome in a marathon or ultra.

Speaker 1

I don't think I've done a race at that elevation.

Speaker 1

I've I've been pretty close.

Speaker 1

Maybe some of the ones I've done in Europe have gone up to about 9,000 feet.

Speaker 1

They're typically about 7,000 and I know that just from experience going through an aid station, I just have an intuition of I see the food and I'm like, don't eat that.

Speaker 1

That will not sit well.

Speaker 1

Just a gut intuition.

Speaker 1

Over in Europe, they give out sausages and cheese sometimes.

Speaker 1

And I remember at the Marathon du Mont Blanc, there were sausages like floating in a cauldron of

Speaker 0

Greece.

Speaker 1

Greece.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Like So, yeah.

Speaker 1

Just trust your intuition because your body knows.

Speaker 0

But sometimes when you are at altitude and you're working really hard, your body doesn't know.

Speaker 0

You may think, like, I cannot stomach anything, and that's the time you need to be taking something in.

Speaker 0

So I would say, you know, like your body maybe knows it doesn't want sausages, but your body needs the carbohydrates and it needs the hydration.

Speaker 1

So It's true.

Speaker 0

Keep going with that.

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 2

And even just in those moments, just taking something.

Speaker 2

Even it's just one or two chews and then a little bit later, one or two more instead of trying to down an entire gel.

Speaker 2

Exactly.

Speaker 2

对的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

当然。

For sure.

Speaker 1

Good luck with your race, Sarah.

Speaker 1

Here's a question from Nicole about a 50 state goal.

Speaker 1

She says, I'm trying to be like Angie and run-in all 50 states.

Speaker 1

Is there a better way to train for runners who are crossing three to four longer runs off a year?

Speaker 1

So, Angie, you were doing that.

Speaker 1

Sometimes you did, like, eight or nine.

Speaker 1

How did you do it?

Speaker 0

Well, once you are in marathon shape, if you as long as you can recover well, it doesn't take that much to roll into another modified training cycle.

Speaker 0

And so when you're doing multiple marathons, ultras a year, you're you're not starting from scratch for the most part.

Speaker 0

You're doing your training build for your first race.

Speaker 0

After that, you're focusing on your recovery.

Speaker 0

And then often you just kind of jump back into the final weeks of another training schedule.

Speaker 0

And so it's not like you have to reinvent the wheel in like sixteen weeks, sixteen weeks, sixteen weeks.

Speaker 0

You know, once you kind of get that baseline of fitness, then I do find it to be easier to jump into another marathon.

Speaker 0

Of course, it's going to depend on the person.

Speaker 0

You know, you want to be injury free if you're attempting this.

Speaker 0

You want to make sure that you're giving yourself plenty of recovery time, but it's not like you have to start all the way at scratch.

Speaker 0

You're kind of in marathon shape.

Speaker 0

And, you know, it depends, like, obviously, you're training for a PR, then you might wanna make that kind of a fresh training cycle.

Speaker 0

And so maybe start, you know, with the goal of training for that PR, run your race, and then, you know, if if you're running another one that's kind of close in the time frame, you know, make it more for fun because you don't wanna try to be PR ing multiple times a year.

Speaker 0

But if you're trying to do a 50 state goal, then often, you know, you're getting creative with your training.

Speaker 0

You're getting creative with your travel.

Speaker 0

Sometimes trying to fit in a couple of marathons in one trip.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I think there's a lot of ways to do it well and and not feel like you have to be locked into a full training cycle for every sing single marathon.

Speaker 1

Once you've done the work to get up to marathon shape, you might as well exploit your progress and do hundreds of marathons.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 0

As long as you can recover from them.

Speaker 0

Abby,

Any thoughts, Abby?

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I'd agree that the focus in between the races becomes more about maintaining the fitness that you have instead of trying to build more.

Speaker 2

So you're focusing on recovery, making sure you really have at least a couple weeks to really take it easy and let your muscles heal, and then just enough to maintain your fitness before you go into the next race.

Speaker 2

And that's where nutrition, again, really plays an important part, hydration, sleep, all of those things that are gonna help you maximize the recovery.

Speaker 2

I think strength training becomes important.

Speaker 2

Although, again, you don't want to be doing a lot of really heavy strength training too close to races, but at least in between, you take time to do those things that are gonna help reduce your risk of injury.

Speaker 2

And then also just adjusting your expectations.

Speaker 2

Like Angie said, you can't run a PR at every race, So pick the race where you want to try to go fast, and the other races, you're just gonna say, I'm gonna see what feels good on this day and just go with it.

Speaker 2

The goal is to have fun, to enjoy the experience, to get to the finish line with a smile on my face rather than worrying about the time for every race.

Speaker 1

Good luck on your 50 state quest.

This next question is about shin splints.

Speaker 1

This is from Kim.

Speaker 1

He's been running for over ten years, but this year has suddenly started dealing with shin splints.

Speaker 1

She says, I'm hoping to get some advice on how to manage this injury while continuing to run.

Speaker 1

Specifically, how do I gauge what level of discomfort is safe?

Speaker 1

For context, the pain currently occurs only after running or while I'm at rest.

Speaker 1

Thanks for your help.

Speaker 1

Well, that doesn't sound fun, shin splints.

Speaker 2

对。

No.

Speaker 2

Shin splints are not fun, and they can really be troublesome for a long time.

Speaker 2

And part of the problem with shin splints is that we use that term, but it could actually mean three or four or even five different things that are going wrong.

Speaker 2

So I mean, we can't diagnose anyway, but really without knowing, like, exactly where does it hurt, how does it hurt, can't really say what the problem is.

Speaker 2

As far as being able to keep running, one piece of advice I got is rated on a scale of one to 10, whereas zero really is no pain at all.

Speaker 2

10 is just the worst, most excruciating pain you can imagine.

Speaker 2

If it's in that one to two, three range, you're okay to keep running, but be cautious.

Speaker 2

Don't try to do too much or build up your mileage too fast, and just make sure that it's not getting worse.

Speaker 2

If it's four to five to six, then you really need to back off and be careful.

Speaker 2

And if it's higher than that, then you want to go see a doctor.

Speaker 2

If it's six or above, I would just say don't run at all.

Speaker 2

Go get it checked out.

Speaker 2

Now she also says that it only hurts after running or at rest, and that is a different thing.

Speaker 2

If it's hurting while you run and is affecting your gait, that's a big red flag that you need to stop and get it checked out.

Speaker 2

But if you can run normally, I'm just gonna say it's probably not serious.

Speaker 2

Like I said, I can't say that for sure, but it's probably not.

Speaker 2

It could just be that things are tightening up after you run, and that's what's causing the pain.

Speaker 2

And for those kinds of things, you can do something.

Speaker 2

So I would say really make paying attention to stretching, foam rolling, wear compression, and see if that helps.

Speaker 2

Do some calf strength exercises and see if that helps.

Speaker 2

And then if it's just not getting better or it's getting worse, starting to bother you when you run, go get it checked out.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I would say that this is one of those things that you wanna keep it from getting worse.

Speaker 0

And so sometimes it can be as simple as your shoes are getting too old.

And, you know, if a person has a propensity to an injury on a certain certain spot, sometimes if you run on cambered roads where the left side of the road kind of drops off, and so it throws your hips, your gait out of alignment.

Speaker 0

Sometimes that can lead to shin splints.

Speaker 0

So finding more of a flat surface.

Speaker 0

I've had people who can, like, alternate their runs, like do a road run and then a treadmill run because the treadmill is flat.

Speaker 0

It's lower impact on the body.

Speaker 0

Sometimes that can help.

Speaker 0

But I'm also a huge fan of physical therapy.

Speaker 0

I feel like it can really make you a stronger runner, not only address the current issue that you're having.

Speaker 0

And so I would say a lot of areas have kind of like an orthopedic urgent care that you don't necessarily need to go through the long process of finding the doctor, making the appointment.

Speaker 0

It's going be usually sometimes six to eight weeks out if you're a new patient.

Speaker 0

You can go to these orthopedic urgent cares because I just did this with our son, our youngest son, who has shin splints currently.

Speaker 0

And, you know, we got seen because of the level of his discomfort.

Speaker 0

They just went ahead and did a quick X-ray to make sure there wasn't a stress fracture.

Speaker 0

There was a little bit of a stress reaction for him.

Speaker 0

It was not due to running.

Speaker 0

Was doing high jump for track.

Speaker 0

But anyway, I digress.

Speaker 0

But they prescribed physical therapy, and he's been going.

Speaker 0

And they'll do a lot of balance exercises, assessing your strength, assessing your muscle endurance.

Speaker 0

And for him, they said he has weak hips.

Speaker 0

And so that will affect things lower down the kinetic chain.

Speaker 0

So he's had to do a lot of hip strengthening, a lot of stretching and things like that.

Speaker 0

So I would say don't be afraid to get yourself into physical therapy sooner rather than later.

Speaker 0

Because not only will it not get worse, then they can often diagnose things you didn't even know were going on.

Speaker 0

You maybe don't know that you have weak hips or weak glutes, and it will lead to you becoming a stronger runner because of that injury.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

We do have a course in the academy designed by a runner who's a physical therapy doctor.

Speaker 1

The program is called the Resilient Runner, and he deals with shin splints in there.

Speaker 1

There's videos and a self treatment guide that he put together.

Speaker 1

So if you wanna just work on it on your own before you escalate to a physical therapist, there's that.

Speaker 1

It's called the Resilient Runner.

Speaker 1

Let's talk about bunions.

Speaker 1

It's a fun word, not a fun problem.

Speaker 1

This comes from Courtney.

Speaker 1

She says, I've noticed increased pain in my bunion during my runs.

Speaker 1

My toe box feels wide enough and I even do toe yoga.

Speaker 1

Oh, that's the kind of yoga I've never heard of.

Speaker 1

Am I doing more damage with running?

Speaker 1

Is this reversible or will the pain continue to increase until I am forced to have surgery?

Speaker 1

My bunion is being a pain in my bun, she says.

Speaker 1

Any thoughts on bunions?

Speaker 2

Well, I have a few thoughts.

Speaker 2

I have a mild bunion myself.

Speaker 2

It's been there for a long time.

Speaker 2

It generally doesn't cause me any pain.

Speaker 2

So the fact that she's has increased pain, that's kind of a signal that she should probably go to a podiatrist and get it checked.

Speaker 2

So bunions are classified as mild, moderate, or severe.

Speaker 2

And if you look up pictures of people with severe bunions, it's pretty nasty looking.

Speaker 2

If you have a severe bunion, you just need surgery.

Speaker 2

If you have a moderate bunion and it's causing pain, you probably need surgery.

Speaker 2

But a mild one or a moderate one that's not causing pain, you probably don't need surgery as long as it doesn't get worse.

Speaker 2

And a bunion will not get better on its own.

Speaker 2

It's not going to change.

Speaker 2

It's not you can buy any product that you want that you see, and it might make it feel better.

Speaker 2

It might temporarily relieve the pain, but it's not going to change because there's a tight muscle across the foot that's just very tight, it's pulled the bone out of alignment, and it's just not gonna go back without surgery.

Speaker 2

So, like, my mild bunion hasn't changed in years.

Speaker 2

As long as I'm careful with the shoes that I buy, it doesn't cause me any problems.

Speaker 2

I assume what she means by toe yoga are some mobility exercises you can do for your feet and toes, and those are helpful.

Speaker 2

They can just help strengthen the muscles and stretch the muscles and at least prevent it from getting worse or reduce the pain.

Speaker 2

And I also will sometimes wear the toe spaces around for a few hours, and that helps stretch out the muscles.

Speaker 2

And I have noticed improvements in how my feet move when I run since doing that.

Speaker 2

So it's worth doing it, but it's not going to fix the bunion.

Speaker 2

So, yeah, always making sure that your your shoes are fitting right.

Speaker 2

What I found for me, it's not just the toe box, which is important, but it also has to be that the mesh upper has to be very flexible.

Speaker 2

Because if there's a stiff sometimes there's a stiff seam across the top of the shoe.

Speaker 2

If it goes across my bunion, there's no give there, and it's going to hurt when I run.

Speaker 2

So I have to look for shoes that are just gonna have that flexible mesh all the way across and enough room for my toes, and then I'll be fine.

Speaker 2

So do kind of take a look at the shoes, make sure it's not just creating a pressure point at that spot, in which case fixing the shoes might fix the pain.

Speaker 2

But if it doesn't, then going to see a podiatrist is gonna be the best option.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

For sure.

Speaker 0

And I think taking a look at the shoes you wear on a daily basis, your work shoes, making sure there's enough room in the toe box with those, making sure you're not wearing any kind of heel because that forces more pressure onto the big toe in that bunion area.

Speaker 0

And I would say be cautious about wearing running shoes that have a high heel to toe drop.

Speaker 0

If you're looking at ones that are sometimes 12 to 14 millimeter heel to toe drop, that can also just with time put more impact on that big toe and cause increased discomfort and swelling and pain.

Speaker 0

So it's not like you have to wear a zero drop, but there's some moderate range ones, you know, like a four to six millimeter might be a better option.

Speaker 0

But yeah, it's not going to be reversible and a podiatrist would definitely know the best about what course of action.

Speaker 0

And it may be one of those things like getting the surgery earlier may preserve more running for you down the road instead of dealing with the pain long term.

Speaker 0

So kind of one of those things you have to really weigh out.

Speaker 0

But, yeah, if you're having continual discomfort, that's probably a sign that it might be time to consider getting the surgery.

Speaker 1

And I think the surgeries are getting more and more advanced and successful.

Speaker 1

We actually had a foot surgeon on the podcast a couple years ago, Doctor.

Speaker 1

Brad Schaefer.

Speaker 1

He was in the TLC show, My Feet Are Killing Me.

Speaker 1

His whole specialty was bunion surgery.

Speaker 1

And in fact, there's actually I'm looking back at the email right now.

Speaker 1

There's actually a national bunion day, so you can celebrate.

Speaker 0

Do you feel like celebrating?

Speaker 1

No, I mean, apart from the hassle and the expensive surgery, I think surgery might not be the worst thing from what I've heard about, you know, from Doctor.

Speaker 1

Brad about how how good it is now.

Speaker 1

Looking back at the email, this is from Doctor.

Speaker 1

Brad's team, he says, until recently, traditional treatment options were often associated with long and painful recovery processes up to seventy percent chance of bunion reoccurrence.

Speaker 1

Now, a more innovative approach allows most patients to get back on their feet in a walking boot within days after surgery.

Speaker 1

So that's good.

Speaker 2

So I was going to say just make sure that when you go to a podiatrist that he's up on the latest methods.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

And understands how important running and being active to you is.

Speaker 0

Because there's plenty of people who are like, oh, just you know, make sure you never run again kind of thing and give blanket statements which are not helpful for runners.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

Let's talk about super shoes.

Speaker 1

This comes from doctor Arnold Weig, longtime listener.

Speaker 1

He's 70 years old.

Speaker 1

He's an active marathon runner.

Speaker 1

He says, are super shoes only for super runners or do I benefit from them in a different way?

Speaker 1

And then he asked about lacing.

Speaker 1

Should I lace up tight for maximum support or something less?

Speaker 1

Is there benefit for me to lace through the runner's loop as a a top loop on your shoe or only if I notice heel slippage?

Speaker 1

What do your coaches think?

Speaker 2

Well, like anything, I'm gonna say it depends.

Speaker 2

I just read an article with some of the latest research on the super shoes and how people are using them, and it was really interesting.

Speaker 2

So the super shoes have both usually a carbon plate and high-tech foam that give you more energy return with every footstep.

Speaker 2

So that means you're using less energy to move faster, and it also means less strain on the muscles so you feel better later in a race.

Speaker 2

And what this article said that in terms of doing a five k, and this was not for necessarily elite runners, but, like, faster people competitive in their age group runners, it could be the difference of forty five seconds.

Speaker 2

And so if you're a person who kind of expects to be competitive in your age group in the race, even if it's just your local five k or 10 k, if your competitors are wearing super shoes, then you're going to need to be wearing them too to be able to stay with them generally.

Speaker 2

If you're not competitive in your age group, then it becomes less important.

Speaker 2

The slower you run, the less benefit there is.

Speaker 2

So if you're not a fast runner, there's not as much benefit.

Speaker 2

There is some risk.

Speaker 2

It's still controversial.

Speaker 2

There's not enough studies out to be sure.

Speaker 2

There's more anecdotal reports of more plantar fasciitis and some stress fractures in the foot from the super shoes.

Speaker 2

But they're saying now that might not be so much the shoes themselves, but that runners are using them more for training because there's less fatigue so they can work harder and do a hard workout again sooner.

Speaker 2

And it might just be that that higher training load is what's causing the injuries.

Speaker 2

So it is a little unclear whether there's more injury risk, but it's still if you're just not a fast runner and you don't care about that extra thirty seconds that you might get in a five k or an extra few minutes in a marathon, then it's probably not worth the risk or the cost of the shoes.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Because there is a a difference in durability for most of these shoes.

Speaker 0

So you can only get a 150 to maybe two fifty, 300 miles on them, and, you know, they are not inexpensive.

Speaker 0

So it is a significant investment.

Speaker 0

And I would say that, you know, you should try them out at shorter distances before trying to do a long run-in them or race a long distance in them.

Speaker 0

Personally, for me, I'm an injury prone runner, and I found that they resulted in too much instability.

Speaker 0

And I felt like it was transferring too much energy up into my calves, into my knee, and I would feel soreness after wearing them.

Speaker 0

So I like more of a like an insole, like a carbon plate insole put in my shoes because I feel like that gives a little bit of energy return, but also I'm not kind of like risking the instability of the shoe.

Speaker 0

And if you look at a lot of even the elite runners like Sebastian Saway, who currently holds the marathon record, if you zoom in on his shoes as he's running, obviously, he's very light and efficient.

Speaker 0

There is a ton of pronation going on in these shoes because they are stacked really high.

Speaker 0

The uppers are very light, you know, they barely weigh anything.

Speaker 0

And so there's not a lot of support in there.

Speaker 0

And so a lot of that movement is, you know, if your body is not prepared for that, it can lead to injury.

Speaker 0

So I would say, you know, be cautious, try them out.

Speaker 0

Definitely don't just slap them on for a marathon and hope for the best because we don't want to see anyone injured.

Speaker 0

And so, you know, so try them out.

Speaker 0

I feel like there's going be more and more options that, you know, the Nike ones are not going to be the only thing out there, and probably your favorite shoe brand will be making them at some point in time.

Speaker 0

And I think there will be a lot more options as far as width, maybe, you know, even some stability features built into them.

Speaker 0

So like Abby said, if you run an eight minute mile or faster, there's, you know, a higher percentage of time that will be taken off if, you know, all goes well.

Speaker 0

But if you run a ten minute mile or beyond, then they find that it kind of drops down to like a 1% improvement.

Speaker 0

So, it just depends.

Speaker 0

A lot of people like to experiment.

Speaker 0

They like to be kind of on the the cusp of things and, you know, live on the edge a little bit.

Speaker 0

So I'd say this is one of those ways that you can kind of shake things up if if that's your personality and want to try something new.

Speaker 1

Any thoughts on the second part of his question about lacing?

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

That is an interesting one because sometimes we don't think too much about our laces, but they can make a difference.

Speaker 2

So your shoe should be snug, and you should pull the laces tight enough that your foot is not going to be moving around in your shoe, pretty simply.

Speaker 2

I found, as I mentioned with the bunion, that sometimes I get a pressure, and sometimes I loosen the laces at the top of the shoe, and that helps relieve that pressure.

Speaker 2

But then I just need to make sure it's snug on the bottom half of the lacing.

Speaker 2

And I do like that runner's loop to really make sure my heel is secure when I run.

Speaker 2

But you also have to be careful that you're not putting too much pressure anywhere across the top of your foot.

Speaker 2

I have had times when I've had foot pain.

Speaker 2

I'm like, oh, my laces are just too tight, and they can create a lot of pressure.

Speaker 2

So there are different ways to experiment with lacing your shoes to figure out what will give you the right amount of support, keep your foot secure, but not put too much pressure across the top.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

A 100%.

Speaker 0

Because what can feel good at the start of a long run or a race can your feet will swell normally, during a long run, a marathon, an ultramarathon.

Speaker 0

And so, yeah, anytime you start to feel any kind of too much constriction, you need to adjust your laces.

Speaker 0

Like, stop sooner rather than later because you don't want to mess around with foot pain.

Speaker 0

And I've definitely made the mistake of lacing my shoes too tight and not stopping when I should have, just gutting it out.

Speaker 0

And, yeah, it's not worth it.

Speaker 1

And speaking of shoes with a wide toe box, it has worked out so perfectly that Altra is sponsoring the podcast this year.

Speaker 1

We're super proud to have them as a sponsor.

Speaker 1

We've been running Altra for years.

Speaker 1

And Angie, you were talking about finding a shoe with more of a zero drop in our discussion about feet.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Not only is it important that you have a good amount of room in your toe box, for some people, you don't want to have a high heel to toe ratio.

Speaker 0

So you don't want a high drop in your shoe because it can put extra pressure on areas of your feet that are uncomfortable.

Speaker 0

And so ultra does have zero drop shoes.

Speaker 0

They also have some with a lower stack height as well.

Speaker 0

So there's something for everyone.

Speaker 0

But the goal of the ultra fit is that your shoes are working with you, not against you so that your toes can spread out.

Speaker 0

It gives your feet the space to move how they're supposed to.

Speaker 0

And that results in better balance and stability throughout your entire running gait or, you know, whatever activity you're doing.

Speaker 1

We were also talking about super shoes.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

This comes from Steve.

Speaker 1

We all know we should be doing strength training, but he asked, how do you balance running and strength training?

Speaker 1

He's wanting some suggestions on how he can incorporate into his his running training.

Speaker 2

没错。

Right.

Speaker 2

And this is a really good question because the strength training is very important.

Speaker 2

And sometimes it's even more important than getting in the run.

Speaker 2

So it should be a regular part of your training plan.

Speaker 2

Ideally, you're going to do the strength training on the same days that you do the hard run so that the in between days are true recovery, that you're just taking it easy, letting your body recover so that you can come back.

Speaker 2

Sometimes, especially when you get into the higher volume of marathon training, there just isn't enough time.

Speaker 2

And in that case, a short and very focused workout on a recovery day can be okay because your goal there isn't so much to get stronger but to maintain the strength.

Speaker 2

And so you just back off a little bit.

Speaker 2

Don't do as many exercises or as many reps and give your body a chance to really recover and be ready for the next hard workouts.

Speaker 2

So that can be part of how you keep the balance.

Speaker 2

And the other thing is to keep the workouts focused.

Speaker 2

There's a lot of content out there, a lot of apps that'll give you workouts, and they'll say they're running specific.

Speaker 2

And they'll just load you up with a lot of different exercises, a lot of different reps, a lot of this or that, and it's just going to tire you out more than it will benefit you.

Speaker 2

So really try to find the few exercises that are going to help you the most.

Speaker 2

Go heavy.

Speaker 2

Do few reps and really try to make them count.

Speaker 2

So when I do a strength workout, I try to keep it to four or five exercises.

Speaker 2

And I will kinda break it up, do it throughout the week.

Speaker 2

Because I do swim and do some triathlons, I do need an upper body day.

Speaker 2

So I'll so it'll be a recovery day from running.

Speaker 2

I'll do a swim and do an upper body workout.

Speaker 2

But the other days, I'm focused more on the legs, the core, and just try to keep it under twenty minutes for the strength.

Speaker 2

And then another ten minutes or so for stretching, and I'm done.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I think making it manageable, is a great way to especially if you're getting started with strength training because it can get overwhelming.

Speaker 0

You know, he said, can look online.

Speaker 0

You can find these extremely complicated long workouts, anything like, I do not have time to do this and running.

Speaker 0

So really dialing into those strength, movements that are going to use multiple muscle groups, you know, your squats, your lunges.

Speaker 0

Single leg work is also really good because I think a lot of us, you know, have a stronger leg than the other, so it also works balance.

Speaker 0

You know, pull ups, push ups, plank, those kind of things are really important.

Speaker 0

Steve's question, the part that Trevor didn't read is that he's training for overall health and recently completed a 10 k looking to advance to a half marathon.

Speaker 0

So he's, you know, at this point, he's not, like, doing the longer marathon training.

Speaker 0

So I think there is a lot that he can do with strength training because, you know, he may not even be probably running every single day.

Speaker 0

So, you know, you can alternate running day and a strength training day, and it can fit nicely into your schedule that way.

Speaker 0

But I would say don't try to do a, you know, a lower body workout that's gonna really tax your legs right before you try to do a speed workout or close to your long run.

Speaker 0

So that kind of thing can be really important to try to spread out a bit so that you're not trying to, you know, hit a speed workout and your legs are just heavy and tired and under recovered.

Speaker 1

Alright.

Speaker 1

Here's a question from Sue.

Speaker 1

Silver Sue, Angie, do you remember her?

Speaker 0

记得。

I do.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

We met her in Hawaii.

Speaker 1

She is in the age group of 75 to 79.

Speaker 1

She says at Boston 2026, she somehow managed to get a thirty four minute BQ.

Speaker 1

Wow.

Speaker 1

That's impressive.

Speaker 1

And a PR.

Speaker 1

So she's asking about runner's trots.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

She says at mile 17 during this marathon, the porta potty called.

Speaker 0

She had carb loaded the day before, although tried to follow a bland diet.

Speaker 0

And she had hydrated and had stopped at every water stop for sips of water and Gatorade.

Speaker 0

And she was using Martin for fueling, but she still had to stop and had runner's trots.

Speaker 0

And so she's kind of trying to figure out what's going on.

Speaker 0

She wants us to explain the importance of hydration and the relationship to runner's trots.

Speaker 0

And, you know, poop's a big topic, and it's something we all have to do.

Speaker 0

And, you know, when you're a runner, you don't don't really wanna have to go during your run if you can help it.

Speaker 1

True.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I don't know that I have any specific advice here because the problem with runner's trots, it's one of those things that there could be a lot of different reasons why they happen, and it can be tricky to figure it out.

Speaker 2

So in the end, if you've tried everything and can't figure it out, you could talk to a sports nutritionist and see if they have some insights.

Speaker 2

Sometimes there's just something that's in your diet that you don't realize that's causing problems for you.

Speaker 2

One thing that I'm always careful for, like, she does talk about being careful with her diet the few days before, But, fats can kinda be sneaky when you're carb loading, and sometimes it's the fats that cause the problems.

Speaker 2

So it's really watching, you know, like, if you have a spaghetti dinner the night before, make sure you're not in a restaurant where they're adding a bunch of oil to the pasta, which sometimes they do, or having a lot of the garlic bread with a lot of butter on it.

Speaker 2

That can sometimes do it.

Speaker 2

Overhydrating can do it, but we also don't wanna be underhydrated either.

Speaker 2

So you know?

Speaker 2

And sometimes you just have to say this is just part of the experience.

Speaker 2

And if you can stop and use the porta potty and still get a PR, you're doing really well.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

I mean, seems to me like if you run enough marathons, you'll probably have to deal with it, and it could be unrelated to your feeling that day.

Speaker 1

I mean, she's done 26 marathons.

Speaker 1

There's this famous moment where Paula Radcliffe is running, and it's a huge race, tons of people watching.

Speaker 1

And she she stops and has to just relieve herself right there and keep running.

Speaker 1

Like, right in front of people, I felt I felt sorry for her.

Speaker 1

But, you know, here, it happens to everybody on certain days, You know?

Speaker 1

It's one of those random occurrences in life, maybe.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And I I would say that if it's a pattern of you feel like you you have diarrhea on race day, you know, nerves, anxiety, even happy anxiety can cause you know, sometimes cause people to have loose bowels.

Speaker 0

So I would say if if it's becoming an issue, like, especially you have to stop more than once.

Speaker 0

Some people do take something like Imodium the morning of a race, just to help keep things from loosening up too much.

Speaker 0

Of course, you wanna talk to a doctor first to make sure it's not gonna interact with any other medications that you may be taking.

Speaker 0

But and I know some people will chew on Pepto Bismol or Tums just to kind of, like, help bring some stability to their stomach on race day.

Speaker 0

So that might be something to explore as well.

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 1

Here's a question from Lynn, longtime listener.

Speaker 1

She's the lady that has done all seven continents four times and all the world marathon majors four times.

Speaker 1

She says, do you know of any exercises to strengthen the knee?

Speaker 2

Well, this is an interesting one because your knee is a joint, not a muscle.

Speaker 2

Just as a personal trainer, I have to point that out.

Speaker 2

So what you're really asking is to strengthen the muscles around the joint to prevent knee pain.

Speaker 2

There's a lot of possibilities, of course, depending on where you have weaknesses.

Speaker 2

But I usually tell people to start with the glutes because a weak butt will cause more problems than you think down to your knees and even down to your ankles.

Speaker 2

So start with glutes.

Speaker 2

Quads are usually not too hard to strengthen.

Speaker 2

They're usually strong enough.

Speaker 2

They're not usually the problem unless there's an imbalance.

Speaker 2

So you kinda wanna say, do I need to strengthen the outside of the quad?

Speaker 2

Do I need to strengthen the inside?

Speaker 2

And that's where you do lateral movements.

Speaker 2

So, like, a monster walk, I like doing a side step up on a stool.

Speaker 2

Those will really help strengthen those imbalances.

Speaker 2

Also, pay attention to the hamstrings.

Speaker 2

And, again, there can be a difference between the right and left, and so single leg exercises for the hamstrings, single leg deadlifts, single leg bridges, things like that are really good.

Speaker 2

And then just while we're on the topic, if it is really knee pain that's the problem, sometimes it isn't weakness, sometimes it's tightness.

Speaker 2

And so you wanna say, do I need to foam roll certain areas?

Speaker 2

Do I need extra stretches for certain areas?

Speaker 2

And that might help relieve the tension that's pulling on the knee and causing the pain.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And again, I would say if this is a chronic issue, being referred to a physical therapist can be greatly beneficial because they can assess, you know, if it's muscle imbalances, what exactly is going on, if there's reduced range of motion, and they can kind of pinpoint the areas that, you know, you need to strengthen or work on mobility with, and they can give you specific exercises to accomplish it most effectively, you know, and be there be there to kind of say like, okay, you're good.

Speaker 0

Like, let's move on to this variation or, you know, I feel like they can really help you target your limited time and attention in a very productive way.

Speaker 1

Just stop running.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

Woah.

Speaker 1

Just kidding.

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 1

Final question is from Manaxi.

Speaker 1

The question is, any thoughts on running after giving birth?

Speaker 1

Probably both of you have done that.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

How many kids do you have?

Speaker 2

I have two kids.

Speaker 2

They are both well into their twenties, and in fact, I'm a grandma.

Speaker 0

So Congratulations.

Speaker 2

Very proud of my little granddaughter who will be turning one in a few weeks.

Speaker 0

Aw.

Speaker 0

I'll see.

Speaker 2

So I did, this past year, coach one of my runners through pregnancy and through postpartum.

Speaker 2

And to help her, I went on to the ACSM, which is who I have my personal training certification with and did their pre and postnatal certification.

Speaker 2

And one of the things that's really important to understand is that every woman's experience is different.

Speaker 2

So you can read about women who are running until a few weeks before giving birth and who are back to running right afterwards and who are doing ultra marathons and stopping to breastfeed along the way.

Speaker 2

And that's awesome.

Speaker 2

I am glad that women are empowered to do that, but it's not going to be right for every woman's body.

Speaker 2

And so you really have to pay attention to what your body is able to do.

Speaker 2

And if you're talking about your first pregnancy, you really don't know.

Speaker 2

You don't know how it's gonna react to the pregnancy itself, how it's gonna react to giving birth, what your recovery after birth is going to be like, and it can be different with every pregnancy.

Speaker 2

So don't assume that what worked one time is gonna work again.

Speaker 2

So all of that is to say pay attention to your body because a healthy mother is always the priority.

Speaker 2

Now that said, after pregnancy, you know, once you're cleared to run, take your time.

Speaker 2

Don't expect to be right back to where you were before getting pregnant.

Speaker 2

The runner that I'm working with, she's, I think, nine or ten months postpartum now.

Speaker 2

And I was kind of looking I had her do a five k recently just to see where she's at, and she's made great progress.

Speaker 2

She's still slower than she was two years ago.

Speaker 2

And that's okay.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

She's taking care of a baby.

Speaker 2

She's got a lot on her plate.

Speaker 2

We're we're taking time for her to get back to where she was, and she's doing awesome.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

She's happy.

Speaker 2

She's healthy.

Speaker 2

She has a healthy baby.

Speaker 2

Those are the most important things.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

A 100%.

Speaker 0

And I would say, like you were indicating, Abby, you can see a lot out there.

Speaker 0

Like, Kara Goucher was out training and running a marathon four months after giving birth, and it puts a lot of pressure on on people.

Speaker 0

And I think probably looking back, it was too much pressure for her too.

Speaker 0

She felt like she had to do that because her contract with Nike, and it was not the best thing for her body.

Speaker 0

And even though, you know, childbirth is a very normal thing, is highly traumatic to the body.

Speaker 0

And people, like you said, have a variety of experiences with pregnancy, with the type of delivery, you know, it's going to depend whether you had a vaginal birth, a c section, if there was tearing, you know, what state your pelvic floor is postpartum.

Speaker 0

And so I would say like the first thing you need to do is focus on recovery, because it's highly exhausting to give birth and be postpartum and not put pressure yourself to feel like you have to jump right back into a training plan.

Speaker 0

The first thing you need to be doing is taking care of yourself with nutrition, trying to get as much sleep as you can, and then focusing on your pelvic floor.

Speaker 0

And I feel like this is an area that's often ignored.

Speaker 0

And you know, if you have a diastasis recti where the abdominal muscles are not coming back together correctly, I feel like focusing on core strength is super important before you start running again.

So again, you know, there's there's a lot of programs out there that a person can do, but if you have had any complications with your pelvic floor or abdominal muscles, you need to be working with a physical therapist, someone who is trained specifically in postpartum.

Speaker 0

And that will pay huge dividends because there are women who years later still have problems with abdominal wall separation, who still have pelvic floor issues, who are experiencing urinary leakage and uterine prolapse, just really uncomfortable things that can come back to not taking care of themselves properly after birth.

Speaker 0

I feel like women have been pressured just to get back to normal too soon after giving birth.

Speaker 0

And, you know, if I could talk to myself after having babies, it would just be to give myself more grace and focus on taking care of myself, my baby, and, you know, building back some of those basic core strengths before trying to jump right back into training.

Speaker 0

But I do understand why women do it because, you know, training makes us feel good.

Speaker 0

You get those endorphins and so but not to compare yourself to anyone else is a huge thing.

Speaker 2

没错。

Right.

Speaker 2

Exactly.

Speaker 2

Because if you are one of those women that just bounce back after pregnancy, the birth is not too stressful, your body re just recovers to a reasonable prepregnancy state quickly, you you could be out running pretty well after a few weeks.

Speaker 2

But for most women, it's your body is just in this state.

Speaker 2

You've gone through all kinds of hormonal changes that affects your ligaments and everything else, and you just need to let it have time to go back to a normal state or a new normal state.

Speaker 0

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 2

If you had a challenging birth, you need to give your body time to recover from that and and just give yourself grace that it's okay to not do everything.

Speaker 2

And so when you do come back, just be ready to take it slow.

Speaker 2

And so with my runner, I used, really a back to run protocol that's very similar to what they have you do after a stress fracture, where you just run a minute, walk for a minute.

Speaker 2

Run a minute, walk for a minute.

Speaker 2

And just do that a lot of times and then just slowly build the amount of time spent running back up.

Speaker 2

And that worked very well for her.

Speaker 2

It let her body just ease back into it in a way that was comfortable and felt good.

Speaker 2

And then when she was really ready, we could start doing the speed work and stuff again and throw in some five k's and just see where she's at.

Speaker 2

And that's been enjoyable and low stress for her.

Speaker 2

So, you know, like I said, it's getting close to a year.

Speaker 2

No half marathons or marathons on the schedule yet.

Speaker 2

Just taking it one month at a time and seeing where she's at.

Speaker 1

So, Abby, what's harder?

Speaker 1

Giving birth or running a 100 k?

Speaker 2

Oh, it's a tough question.

Speaker 2

I mean, if we're talking about giving birth without any pain medication, that's definitely gonna trump everything, I think.

Speaker 2

I would say some of my races have been pretty painful and certainly right up there with giving birth, but I would say that recovery from the races is easier than recovery from pregnancy and birth.

Speaker 2

So I'll kinda stick with the races.

Speaker 2

I love my two children, and I was happy to bring them into the world and glad that it was just the right choice for us to stop it too.

Speaker 0

It's a very diplomatic way to say that.

Speaker 0

Not signing up for it again.

Speaker 1

Three was enough for us to manage.
