Welcome to the Mary's Cup of Tea Podcast.
I'm your host, Jelkovsky.
I'm an author, speaker, and all around self love advocate.
And this is the podcast that'll inspire you to love yourself.
This message is especially for my perfectionists.
If you feel a lot of pressure to be perfect, whether that's your body or your grades or your relationship or the way you act or the things you say to other people, like that kind of social anxiety of, like, I have to say the perfect thing to this person in order to make them feel a certain way and just constantly overthinking in your head.
So I want you to think about when you're focused on perfectionism or being perfect, what things are you missing out on?
Are you waiting for the perfect moment?
Are you waiting to have all the perfect skills and tools you need to apply for that job?
Are you completely overthinking everything and you don't take action at all because you're the kind of person that doesn't want to do it unless you know you're gonna be able to do it well, and well is code word for perfectly.
So when you think about these things, perfectionism is obviously something that gets in the way.
And I've always identified as a perfectionist.
Like, I thought perfectionism was a personality trait, and I didn't realize that it's not.
Your personality is not trying to be perfect.
That is just a manifestation or a form of anxiety and wanting people to like you and a combination of so many different things that you think subconsciously that those things can be solved if you were just perfect, if you could just do this really, really well.
And in turn, you're putting all the responsibility and the blame and the burden on yourself and your ability to be perfect, which does not exist.
When you think about being perfect, that is a performance.
That is an illusion that is so far removed from reality.
It does not exist.
When you see the word p e r f e c t, I hope I spelled that right, when you see the word p e r f e c t, when you see it, when you think about it, how do you pronounce it?
Whether that's out loud or in your head, like, how do you say it?
Chances are you probably pronounce it like perfect.
Chances are very, very slim that you pronounce it perfect.
Do you hear the difference?
Perfect and perfect.
Perfect is an adjective.
Very rarely do we think of that word as perfect to perfect.
And perfect is a verb.
It is the process of perfecting something, the process of making something better.
And the keyword here is process, that when you are perfecting something, it's never perfect because perfect is an illusion.
It doesn't exist.
It is never ever fully perfect, but it's the process of perfecting that isn't all so bad.
I would say that for most things outside of your body and trying to change your body because I think that your body is already perfect and there's nothing that needs to change.
But for many other things that you're trying to be perfect at, you never give yourself the opportunity to perfect because chances are you're so caught up in being perfect right off the bat that you don't even try, that you don't even let yourself be bad and then take micro steps into perfecting.
And so this is more in the realm of, like, if you want to start a business or a blog or you wanna try something new, go to a new class, learn a language, date, go out with friends.
Like, if there's things that you wanna do or try or get better at, you never really let yourself do them because you get so held back on trying to have them done perfectly right away.
And because of that, it's not that you're a perfectionist.
It's just that you don't let yourself be in the process of perfecting because truly, and this is where the mind fuck is, if you never let yourself be in the process of perfecting, then how can you call yourself a perfectionist?
A perfectionist, as we know it, is actually somebody who just lives under the illusion of everything needs to be perfect all of the time.
And if it's not, then it's not worth it, and I'm not even gonna try, and I'm a piece of shit, and I am not worthy of anything good in my life because it's not perfect right away.
That is what holds us back.
That adjective perfect and striving to be something that doesn't exist rather than the verb of perfect, to perfect, being in that process of learning.
Basically, all you're doing is learning, and with each and every step, you're getting better.
So if you want to ease the pressure of being perfect, allow yourself to instead be in the process of perfecting.
So stop waiting for the perfect moment where you look perfect and everything is perfect for you to go out and meet new people.
Instead, just be in the process of, I'm working or I'm learning or unlearning my social anxiety and wanting to be more comfortable and present around other people and really enjoy myself on dates, whether that's with friends or potential romantic partners.
And that is the process of, like, maybe perfecting my social skills when, of course, they don't really need to be perfected because that's an illusion.
But when you can think and step into more of just that process and that verb of perfecting, then what it does is it forces you to take the first step.
It forces you to continue taking those steps and knowing that it'll never be fully perfect because that's fake.
It's not real.
Nobody even wants that.
We don't like to look at perfect people.
We feel like shit when we look at people who seem perfect.
And something keeps drawing us to that, and maybe that's just our self deprecating tendencies where we're like, let's look at perfect people who we know aren't real because they have so much cosmetic surgery and editing and so much money to do all these really extravagant things.
And we look at them, and I don't think most people look at, quote, unquote, perfect people and feel inspired by that.
I think most of us look at it in some kind of, like, jealousy or this weird aspirational sense.
Where was I going with that?
Why did I start talking about that?
Oh, the point is that not only does being perfect not exist, but it's also just not pleasant.
It's not anything to strive for.
It's not something that makes people admire you or connect with you or love you more.
So it's just not worth it.
And I want you to see perfectionism as a coping mechanism.
It's not that your personality is perfectionistic and that this is just who you are and you will always be controlled by it.
It's just that that's the way that you learned to somehow try to earn people's approval and maybe even love, whether that's your parents having just really, really high expectations of you and only showing that they're proud of you if you brought home straight a's or maybe your ex always made you feel like you're not good enough.
And they looked at other people's bodies, bodies who society or you thought were perfect, and you wanted to be that.
And you thought that you could somehow earn their love if you were just more perfect.
But the truth is that that's not real love.
You can't earn real love.
Being perfect is not a prerequisite for love and success and all these things that we kind of strive for in life.
None of them come from being perfect.
And if so, if you do feel like they come from being perfect or at some point you just learned that that's what people want from you, then know that that was their coping mechanism.
For example, your parents having really high expectations from you and being really hard on you and you trying to be perfect to live up to that, that was your parents coping with the fact that they fell out of control with their life.
And they thought if they could control their children or make sure that they live up to be something, then that would be a reflection of them or that would somehow solve their problems.
It has nothing to do with you.
And I know these are things that are just so difficult and time consuming and require a lot of in-depth work to unlearn, but it's worth it to break free from the chains of perfectionism.
