Appreciate you.

Speaker 1

I think we should get right to it.

Speaker 1

Detroit backstory, don't draft me.

Speaker 1

Give us the content.

Speaker 1

Give us the whole story.

Speaker 1

I'm a get right on to it, man.

Speaker 2

Here we go.

Speaker 2

So my agents, Reggie back there, they set up a plan, and the plan was, you know, we knew LA had a two way open on draft night and knew it was a situation to where, you know, I could possibly step in, get a contract because I I don't know how many guys were actually under contract at that time.

Speaker 2

There was a lot of free agents, a lot of signings to be done.

Speaker 2

We knew that going in.

Speaker 2

They called it 42, and then they came up to me.

Speaker 2

And, you know, it's every kid's dream of hearing their name called on draft night, and I'm no different.

Speaker 2

But, you know, it it came down to to sticking to a plan, and that's what we did.

Speaker 2

And it it sucked to not hear my name called, but obviously putting ourselves in a good position was, you know, much more important.

Speaker 0

But there has to be more to it.

Speaker 0

Like, you it was for a two way, you know, with the Lakers.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yep.

Speaker 0

Which became, obviously, before the season you got a deal.

Speaker 0

But, I mean, you could have got a two way deal from any of those teams.

Speaker 0

Why the Lakers?

Speaker 0

Why were you that was the place I need to go?

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I think I mean, they have a bunch of analytics guys that were, you know, grading peep grading teams by, you know, grade one, two, three, whatever it was.

Speaker 2

And and the Lakers, I think it was Lakers, Bucks, maybe one other team that was tier one, best possible fit.

Speaker 0

Your agent?

Speaker 2

Yeah, our agents.

Speaker 2

With the analytics people.

Speaker 2

So kind of dove into that and listened to that.

Speaker 2

And then on another note, like like we talked about, like, there was nobody I think there was maybe, like, four or five guys on under contract at the time because that they ended up having to sign, like, seven guys.

Speaker 2

And then knowing that there was gonna be a possibility to snag that thirteenth, fourteenth roster spot.

Speaker 2

Then on top of that, like him, IQ level.

Speaker 2

Like, I feel like I have a pretty good IQ, you know, to the game and felt like, you know, that was one way that I could get in the I mean, on my foot in the door was to, you know, lean on that and lean on, you know, just knowing the game of basketball and, you know, that's what he does.

Speaker 0

When was the first time you saw him play, like, not like, in person or was it on in college?

Speaker 0

或者

Or

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I actually I had never had seen him play up until the point till we drafted him.

Speaker 1

And but once the once I well, not drafted him, but signed him, you know, signed him after the fact, and I went back and watched a lot of his Wichita State highlights and games and then a lot of his Oklahoma highlights and games as well.

Speaker 1

The first thing I noticed is it's kind of funny.

Speaker 1

We always talk about this.

Speaker 1

He didn't play like a white boy.

Speaker 1

It was very different.

Speaker 1

His his wiggle was very different.

Speaker 1

I mean, I grew up in Northeast Ohio, so I know white guys playing like white guys and white guys playing like the

Speaker 2

brothers.

Speaker 2

对。

And

Speaker 1

what I could see in his game is that he had a lot of wiggle to his game.

Speaker 1

And that was one of the one things that, quite frankly, we were missing.

Speaker 1

We didn't have.

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I thought that his game would translate to us, his ability to to crack the seams and his ability to get into the pain and him playing, even though their team wasn't as good with Oklahoma at Oklahoma.

Speaker 1

His his game kind of it showed a pro.

Speaker 1

And that's what I saw.

Speaker 1

That's what I saw early on.

Speaker 1

So as soon as training camp started, I kind of made it a point to kind of beeline it to him and kind of of force something into him, maybe even before he even saw it.

Speaker 0

Push belief.

Speaker 0

Push that

Speaker 1

belief and that confidence like you belong here.

Speaker 1

And that I was kinda on him, like, pretty much from from from day one because I felt like, one, we we needed that, you know, as far as because we didn't we didn't possess that consistently.

Speaker 1

But also, saw he had game too.

Speaker 1

And I I really thought that it could translate to to to the big leagues.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

Did you do you remember a moment where Bron said something to you or just, like, a feeling of connecting with him early where you're like, oh, he he really believes in me.

Speaker 0

Well, damn sure one game

Speaker 1

in Brooklyn.

Speaker 2

Tell you that.

Speaker 2

That clip.

Speaker 1

We gotta make

Speaker 2

sure we cut that.

Speaker 2

不。

No.

Speaker 2

That was it wasn't even my fault.

Speaker 2

That was another story.

Speaker 2

But, no, it always goes back to, you know, when when he had his mini camp in San I think it was no.

Speaker 2

It was Vegas.

Speaker 2

Vegas that year.

Speaker 0

Before your run-in?

Speaker 2

Before it was this was before I was on under contract, and it was crazy because it was I think it was, like, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.

Speaker 2

We came back Sunday, and it was, like, Wednesday, and I didn't even know if I was going yet.

Speaker 2

And one of my friends back home was getting married that weekend too, so I was about to buy a flight to go back home.

Speaker 2

Got the invite, obviously, told my friend, like,

Speaker 1

那个,

hey.

Speaker 0

我不能

I can't

Speaker 2

Can't say nothing.

Speaker 2

This shit.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 2

So we we get in the gym, and I think we got to playing, like, three on three or something.

Speaker 2

Got a couple buckets and then drove downhill, ate, and I thought I had a layup, the AD come out of nowhere.

Speaker 2

And I was like, oh, fuck.

Speaker 2

And late second, kinda, like, behind the back pass to him.

Speaker 2

He come down the lane, dunked it.

Speaker 2

And then it was just from then on out, like, they were like, you're good.

Speaker 2

Like, just be yourself.

Speaker 2

Him and AD, then I've given him, you know, all the credit I can give him just to, you know, from day one of being like, hey, you don't have to be you, like on the court, off the court, whatever two: it is, just be you.

Speaker 0

It's powerful.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 2

Speaker No, for sure.

Speaker 2

Especially coming from good players.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

You know, it's I had this experience, the sidebar to my experiences, but Kevin Johnson was our point guard in Phoenix my rookie year and I mean I grew up watching this guy play and he was a walking twenty and ten and like one day he grabbed me and was like in the locker room was like, you know you're as good as anyone any guard I've ever played against and I wasn't even playing.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It's just from practice floor watching, playing, competing and I was like, like kinda, you know what mean?

Speaker 0

You're taken aback a and little he's like, no, you're as good as anyone I've played against and I was like, that gives you so much confidence that because you know I think we have similar kind of coming from places we're not supposed to come from to play And the so for someone who's been there done that and has the things that like we don't have like his explosiveness and speed and things two: like that, you know, to hear the the guys that have done it say it to you really can give you a lot of belief.

Speaker 0

Did you feel like that launched you a little more and of like, just be like let loose, relax

Speaker 2

Yeah, and for sure.

Speaker 2

I mean, you know, like you said, not the most explosive person in the world.

Speaker 2

Very jealous of people like that.

Speaker 2

But, yeah, it's just, you know, I feel like this whole game is a lot of confidence and IQ.

Speaker 2

Uh-huh.

Speaker 2

Speaker When you know the game and you have high confidence, I feel like you can do a lot of things.

Speaker 2

And, you know, that it wasn't just, you know, him and AD.

Speaker 2

We had Mello, Russ, Rondo.

Speaker 2

Like, I lean I lean on Rondo a lot.

Speaker 2

My record That's a hell of a veteran.

Speaker 0

Yes, sir.

Speaker 2

I thought I had I mean, I had probably the the best people that you could talk to Mhmm.

Speaker 2

Possible.

Speaker 2

And, you know, I'm a question asker.

Speaker 2

I remember I told Rondo, I was like, yo.

Speaker 2

If I ask you too many questions, you can tell me to shut the hell up.

Speaker 2

I don't care.

Speaker 1

He loves questions.

Speaker 2

Yeah, so every time we would be in practice, there's something would happen and I would go over to him or I'd always be standing by him and just be like, did you see here?

Speaker 2

What did you see there?

Speaker 2

But yeah, just the confidence that they had in in me, the whole group from day one just, you know, like you said, catapulted me to, you know, continue to be better.

Speaker 0

So Rondo's, like, as advertised, like a thinker.

Speaker 1

没错。

For sure.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

For sure.

Speaker 0

Crazy.

Speaker 2

Had to carry a chessboard around for him.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Did you ever play with him?

Speaker 0

Did ever play

Speaker 2

没有。

with him?

Speaker 2

No.

Speaker 2

I never played him.

Speaker 2

I I and I started playing chess a lot my rookie year.

Speaker 2

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 2

And I got decent, but I still was a little nervous to play him because I felt like he would be nice.

Speaker 2

So I never played him.

Speaker 2

不过——

But

Speaker 1

I forgot you used

Speaker 2

to carry

Speaker 1

a chess board.

Speaker 1

It is.

Speaker 2

对。

Yep.

Speaker 2

Sounds funny.

Speaker 1

I remember

Speaker 2

I was gonna I bought it in Boston.

Speaker 0

Oh, really?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I mean

Speaker 0

So okay.

Speaker 0

That is a

Speaker 2

crazy

Speaker 0

细节。

detail.

Speaker 0

When did you start hooping?

Speaker 0

Because I know you played baseball as a kid.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I I mean, I kind

Speaker 0

就

of

Speaker 2

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Always played.

Speaker 2

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I mean, my mom and dad both played.

Speaker 2

Brother plays over

Speaker 0

Both played in college.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 2

Both yeah.

Speaker 2

They played at Arkansas State.

Speaker 2

That's where they met.

Speaker 0

Where'd your brother play in college?

Speaker 2

He played at Central Missouri, division two school.

Speaker 2

Just he it's just small.

Speaker 2

He was a two guard that was too small to play.

Speaker 2

He he could have played at a small division one, but, you know, you see Yeah.

Speaker 2

A white kid that's not very athletic.

Speaker 2

You can shoot shit out of it.

Speaker 2

But, yeah.

Speaker 2

I kinda always played, but but baseball was the the one that everybody wanted me to My dad told me my I think it was going into my seventh grade year.

Speaker 2

He said I needed to pick baseball or basketball to try to get my school paid for it.

Speaker 2

Because that's, at that point, that's all we're thinking about.

Speaker 2

And I'm probably five foot, ninety five pounds.

Speaker 0

What position did you play in baseball?

Speaker 2

Shortstop.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I played

Speaker 1

a lot

Speaker 2

of short and then I pitched a little, which I didn't like pitching.

Speaker 2

But, yeah.

Speaker 2

We had a summer basketball camp and I moved up two grades to play with my brother.

Speaker 2

And we was beating teams by 30.

Speaker 2

And I was like, oh, this is much faster.

Speaker 2

Baseball is kind of slow.

Speaker 2

So I went back to my dad and I was like, I wanna play basketball.

Speaker 2

And he was like, you're fucking stupid.

Speaker 2

I was like, damn.

Speaker 2

But he was like, obviously, you got my support.

Speaker 0

Were you killing it in baseball?

Speaker 2

I was Yeah.

Speaker 2

I was solid.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 2

你当时

You was

Speaker 1

you was probably trending higher in baseball than he He

Speaker 2

he thought he thought I yeah.

Speaker 2

不是。

No.

Speaker 2

He thought I was a better He

Speaker 0

has solid metric, skinny white, skinny white boy.

Speaker 2

I was small.

Speaker 2

I I mean, I didn't grow until my, like, junior year of high school.

Speaker 2

So at the time, I understand why.

Speaker 2

But, you know, he told me that my best friend's dad, which was our baseball coach.

Speaker 2

You know, I remember we were driving home, he was taking me home and I told him I was quitting baseball and he told me that basketball wasn't gonna work out.

Speaker 2

And I was like, well, we'll see.

Speaker 0

I got I got some similar stories in my background about that.

Speaker 0

My dad my dad's from The UK.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

He played semi pro soccer, but he was great about it when I was like, I'm not gonna play soccer anymore.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Play basketball.

Speaker 0

He he, like, bit his tongue.

Speaker 0

He was like,

Speaker 2

dad did that What you wanna do,

Speaker 0

it's great.

Speaker 0

Yeah, he was like, do what you wanna do, it's great.

Speaker 0

But you could tell inside he was, he was not.

Speaker 0

That hurts.

Speaker 0

That hurts.

Speaker 0

But, but I wanna hear more about your brother because I heard, I read, you know I do do a little bit of research, right?

Speaker 0

But your brother had a big influence on saying, like, come hoop with me.

Speaker 0

Like, I see something in you.

Speaker 0

Tell me a little bit about that.

Speaker 1

How how many years older?

Speaker 1

You're older.

Speaker 1

Two.

Speaker 1

Two years older.

Speaker 2

Which I was supposed to be three grades younger because I I mean, I graduated high school at 17.

Speaker 2

My mom started me early, so I could play two years with him.

Speaker 2

So I moved up my freshman year and then played with him, again, my, tenth grade year.

Speaker 2

But, yeah, he he fell in love with basketball when he was probably in seventh grade.

Speaker 2

You know, quit everything.

Speaker 2

He was a gym rat.

Speaker 2

He'd go to the gym every night.

Speaker 2

Like, we're in a town of a thousand people.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 2

He's probably 12, 13 years old, driving to the gym, which probably isn't legal.

Speaker 2

But, yeah, so

Speaker 0

Probably legal

Speaker 2

time?

Speaker 2

I don't think so.

Speaker 2

But that's another story.

Speaker 2

Had never

Speaker 0

been to Arkansas.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 2

But, yeah, no.

Speaker 2

He he fell in love with it, and I was kinda still in the fringe of baseball.

Speaker 2

Like, I I still love baseball.

Speaker 2

And probably going in to my, like, eighth grade year, he I I think he'd seen that, you know, I I had ability, and I I remember there was nights that he'd be going to the gym, you know, seven, 08:00 at night, and he'd be like, you wanna go?

Speaker 2

And I was like, not really.

Speaker 2

And he'd be like, you're coming anyway.

Speaker 2

Like, I had no choice.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 2

He'd drag me out of the house.

Speaker 2

We'd go shoot for, you know, a couple hours, and then he'd just beat me really bad one on one.

Speaker 2

I think that it was a confidence builder for him, just wearing me out all the time.

Speaker 2

But, yeah, he he's probably the biggest basketball influence in my life.

Speaker 2

You know, he he instilled work ethic.

Speaker 2

He would always, you know, sit me down and be like, yo, like, you're from Newark, Arkansas, the town of a thousand people.

Speaker 2

You're gonna have to do more than everybody else.

Speaker 2

Like, it it's not gonna be easy.

Speaker 0

Like Yeah.

Speaker 2

That even it it went to college.

Speaker 2

I remember going into maybe my senior year or junior year at Oklahoma.

Speaker 2

He pulled me to the side.

Speaker 2

We were working out.

Speaker 2

He was like, what do you wanna do with this?

Speaker 2

Like, do you wanna just play overseas?

Speaker 2

He was like, you go play overseas right now.

Speaker 2

He was like, you don't have to get any better.

Speaker 2

He was like, you can go make some good money play overseas.

Speaker 2

He was like, there's nothing wrong with that.

Speaker 2

But if you want to be an NBA player, you got to do more.

Speaker 2

And so I did more.

Speaker 0

It was crazy.

Speaker 2

It's crazy.

Speaker 0

I have similar people in my life that's had the same similar conversations with me, but is he still open?

Speaker 0

He's 29 now?

Speaker 2

Yeah, he's 29.

Speaker 2

He plays in Germany.

Speaker 2

Yeah, he's he's doing well.

Speaker 2

He he started in he started in Spain, I think, probably eight years ago now, making nothing.

Speaker 2

Grinded his way to the top division in Germany and just, you know, he loves it.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 2

So, you know, I don't know how many more years he'll play, but, yeah, he's a he's a basketball fanatic.

Speaker 0

Does he still, like, mentor you?

Speaker 0

Like, he still, like, watch your games and say, like, hey.

Speaker 2

He watches every game, and I'm I'm probably not the easiest to talk to sometimes.

Speaker 2

But if I'm going through a rough shooting stretch, he which he can shoot the ball better than, you know, 99% of the people I've ever met.

Speaker 2

So he does know, and he probably knows me better than I know myself.

Speaker 2

So he'll text me and be like, move it over the ride a little bit or shoot a little hard, just little things like that.

Speaker 2

That's cool so far.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

So I remember I was talking to one of our assistant coaches last year, and I was going I think I was, like, two from my last 27 from three going through it.

Speaker 2

And I was like, oh, before the game, was talking to Bo.

Speaker 2

I was like, don't worry tonight.

Speaker 2

We're good.

Speaker 2

My brother fixed me.

Speaker 2

And he was like, what?

Speaker 2

And I was like, yeah.

Speaker 2

He told me everything I needed to do.

Speaker 2

I think I went, like, six for eight from three.

Speaker 2

He was like, tell your brother to keep texting me.

Speaker 2

That's amazing.

Speaker 0

I mean, he's got a place to

Speaker 2

land after.

Speaker 2

真的是

Yeah.

Speaker 2

For sure.

Speaker 2

He's smart.

Speaker 2

That's cool.

Speaker 2

He's smart.

Speaker 0

When did was it that conversation with your brother when you were in college about the was that when you were like, okay.

Speaker 0

I can play in the league?

Speaker 0

Like, when did you say, like, I'm an NBA player.

Speaker 0

I'm going for this?

Speaker 0

What was that when you were a kid?

Speaker 0

I don't know.

Speaker 2

I mean, I always had, like, delusional confidence.

Speaker 2

Sure.

Speaker 2

And the the weirdest story was is, like, I was, like, like I said, from a town of a thousand people.

Speaker 2

There's nothing to do.

Speaker 2

So you hunt, you fish, you do that.

Speaker 2

Like, you do all the country stuff.

Speaker 2

And I remember my I don't remember this, but my mom's best friend at the time took me hunting one day, we were sitting there talking, and she was like, what do you wanna do?

Speaker 2

Like and I'm probably nine years old.

Speaker 2

And she was like, what do wanna do when you get older?

Speaker 2

And I was like, oh, I wanna play in the NBA.

Speaker 2

And she was like, you mean the MLB?

Speaker 2

And I was like, no.

Speaker 2

我想打NBA。

I wanna play in the NBA.

Speaker 2

And she was like, it was the craziest thing because she was like, you played, but, like, you didn't really, like, actually play.

Speaker 2

But it really come to reality.

Speaker 2

I was at Oklahoma.

Speaker 2

Line Krueger followed me out of practice one day and told me he was like, I think you could be a first round pick.

Speaker 2

And, you know, he's been around basketball for forever.

Speaker 2

He's coached Buddy, Trey, Blake.

Speaker 2

I don't know he didn't coach Blake, but, you know, seeing all this basketball

Speaker 0

Was he at Florida too?

Speaker 2

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2

So he's seen everything.

Speaker 2

And once he said that, was like, Oh, like this is, I got a chance.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Now where do think that, like that delusional confidence come from?

Speaker 1

Where

Speaker 0

did you see that?

Speaker 2

Yeah, I'd like to

Speaker 1

hear more on that.

Speaker 0

就是说

Also, like, how did it then manifest?

Speaker 0

像

Like

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I really don't know because it was Because we've seen some

Speaker 0

a a lot of delusional

Speaker 1

Oh, for sure.

Speaker 1

有些人

People

Speaker 2

that didn't

Speaker 1

它真的

it actually

Speaker 2

didn't go Not for where

Speaker 1

you thought it should go.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

But there's, like Yeah.

Speaker 2

There's, like, a delusional confidence, but also, like, you I still, like, maintain, like, real life.

Speaker 0

Like, don't go I don't go outside.

Speaker 0

Reality.

Speaker 2

没错

Yeah.

Speaker 2

对的

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Still have some

Speaker 0

I gotta work.

Speaker 2

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 2

I don't know, though, because, like, growing up, like I said, it didn't matter what it was.

Speaker 2

Like, I never beat my brother in anything.

Speaker 2

He he would beat me as bad as he possibly could one on one.

Speaker 2

Then we'd go home.

Speaker 2

We'd play cards.

Speaker 2

Was, like, video games.

Speaker 2

Like, we'd play and my parents were the same way.

Speaker 2

They didn't let me win anything.

Speaker 2

It was no, like, poor Austin, let him win one.

Speaker 2

Like, I never won anything.

Speaker 2

So, like, I learned to hate losing more than I love to win.

Speaker 2

So, like, it was like, do whatever you can to To get Yeah.

Speaker 2

To get a Yeah.

Speaker 2

Because I remember the first time I beat him in one on one.

Speaker 2

I took off running.

Speaker 2

Ran the house.

Speaker 2

I it was I was probably, like, 12 or so, and he he let me shoot wide open shots.

Speaker 2

He was like, you can't make enough shots to beat me.

Speaker 2

And I got hot, and I ran in the house.

Speaker 2

He was so pissed.

Speaker 2

I was screaming.

Speaker 2

My mom was like, what's going on?

Speaker 2

But yeah, it's, I don't really don't know where it came from.

Speaker 2

It just, it's just there.

Speaker 0

Yeah, think I, like I, you know, I was so far from the NBA, wasn't even funny, right?

Speaker 0

But I feel like I always felt like I'm willing to do the work.

Speaker 0

If I if I do it for a year, three years, five years, seven years, where could I be?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So that was always my belief system.

Speaker 0

Did you was there a part of that for you too or were you just like, I just love to play.

Speaker 0

I wanna keep playing?

Speaker 2

It started off that I just love to play.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

And I was just gonna see how far I could go.

Speaker 2

Like, it would I didn't think I'd go I didn't think I played division one basketball.

Speaker 2

Mhmm.

Speaker 2

Like, I thought I would end up going division two playing with my brother.

Speaker 0

Why?

Speaker 2

I didn't have like, I was

Speaker 0

what do you think it was about your game or your environment experience that was like because you end up obviously getting him Yeah.

Speaker 0

offer嘛。

Offers.

Speaker 0

What was the gap there for you in your in your environment?

Speaker 2

I didn't play AUBA.

Speaker 2

I played one year AU.

Speaker 0

Exposure?

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I think that was the main thing.

Speaker 2

And then you look at I mean, you look you look at me now and you're still like, you can't play basketball.

Speaker 2

But you looked at me then, I was six five, probably one sixty five, super skinny.

Speaker 2

And that was a lot of the the feedback we got from coaches was he's not big enough, he's not strong enough, he's not athletic enough, but they make weights for a reason.

Speaker 2

I don't know.

Speaker 0

That's good.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I mean it's, everyone's journey is different, right?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It's it's crazy how everyone has a completely different journey and how disparate they can be.

Speaker 0

But like what was, did you think was, because you went to college like I I watched your clips in college and I'm like, that's a pro.

Speaker 0

Why why do you think you weren't a first round pick?

Speaker 0

Like, do you think in your heart at that time, like,

Speaker 2

I well

Speaker 1

You know what?

Speaker 0

I'm not allowed to say it.

Speaker 0

I can't.

Speaker 0

Okay?

Speaker 0

I know

Speaker 2

why.

Speaker 2

You know

Speaker 0

how that shit is.

Speaker 0

And I wasn't trying to put you on the spot.

Speaker 2

No, because they look

Speaker 1

at they look at they look at the judge a book by his cover situation like I can.

Speaker 1

I saw

Speaker 0

the time.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

That's not that that guy that I'm seeing is not a he's not an undrafted.

Speaker 1

There's no way that guy goes undrafted.

Speaker 1

Like, but it's come on, man.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

But I just I think the draft too is you got your top 15 players or whatever the lottery is.

Speaker 2

And then after that, you just I felt like teams just try to hit home runs.

Speaker 2

没错。

Right.

Speaker 2

And then my age was I was 22, I think, coming out.

Speaker 2

So they're like, oh

Speaker 0

Especially in your era of analytics.

Speaker 0

Definitely.

Speaker 2

So it's like go go young, go athletic, and I wasn't either of that, but I could help somebody win.

Speaker 1

Obviously.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Yes, indeed.

Speaker 0

For sure.

Speaker 0

And when you was there like a like for me when I was trying to like get there, was thinking like, maybe I'm not fast enough.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

That was for you?

Speaker 0

Was that Fast or strength or what?

Speaker 2

Everything.

Speaker 2

Everything.

Speaker 2

There was many times I was like, oh, I gotta get stronger.

Speaker 2

I gotta get faster.

Speaker 2

Gotta get more athletic.

Speaker 2

But I realized real quick that if you can think the game Mhmm.

Speaker 2

You can kinda negate some of that.

Speaker 2

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 2

You know?

Speaker 2

Obviously, wish I had wish I had that.

Speaker 1

Do you remember all 58 guys that was drafted?

Speaker 1

No.

Speaker 1

Don't.

Speaker 1

And you were draft?

Speaker 2

I don't give a damn.

Speaker 1

You don't give

Speaker 2

a damn?

Speaker 2

Nope.

Speaker 2

I don't.

Speaker 2

I do not.

Speaker 1

That's what makes you who you are.

Speaker 1

I swear.

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Too busy.

Speaker 1

I definitely would have I would remember every last one

Speaker 2

of them.

Speaker 1

I to tear their ass up every time I play I don't think

Speaker 2

I knew some of them.

Speaker 0

Never heard of them.

Speaker 1

They're definitely not around anymore.

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

What year is this for you now?

Speaker 1

'5.

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

'5.

Speaker 1

They definitely not around.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

There's no way.

Speaker 1

对啊

Yep.

Speaker 1

This guy's in the first round from probably five years ago.

Speaker 1

That's probably not.

Speaker 1

For sure.

Speaker 1

I should look at that.

Speaker 1

What was that?

Speaker 1

The '21 draft?

Speaker 2

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Think so.

Speaker 2

There's some good players though.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Good drive.

Speaker 0

Good drive.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Thanks to DraftKings Sportsbook for sponsoring the show.

Speaker 3

The playoff race is tightening up and the pressure is rising.

Speaker 3

This is the time when legends are made and, unfortunately brackets are busted.

Speaker 3

But let's face it, there's nothing like having skin in the game when the stakes are this high and our partners at DraftKings, they put real stakes on every single bucket, assist, rebound, buzzer, you name it.

Speaker 3

And now new customers who bet $5 get 200 in bonus bets instantly.

Speaker 3

Just download the app and use code mind.

Speaker 3

One of my favorite plays is the same game parlay to turn one game into a shot at a big payout.

Speaker 3

Or I'll go live as the fourth quarter is heating up and bet props on a player who's been cooking all night.

Speaker 3

With DraftKings, you're not just watching the game.

Speaker 3

You're in it.

Speaker 3

For me, I like to look at strength of schedule stuff.

Speaker 3

What's a team's record versus, you know, under 500 teams versus over 500 teams?

Speaker 3

Stuff like that.

Speaker 3

Download the DraftKings sportsbook app now and use code mind to bet $5 and get $200 in bonus bets instantly.

Speaker 3

DraftKings, the crown is yours.

Speaker 0

When was it where you were like I know you had, like, a little mini camp in Vegas, and, obviously, you got signed to a contract early.

Speaker 0

When was it you're like, oh, I belong?

Speaker 0

And did you think before you got the contract, like, oh, I belong?

Speaker 0

Or was it, like, more, like, in the season?

Speaker 2

没有。

No.

Speaker 2

I mean, the the Vegas thing was the first step.

Speaker 2

Step.

Speaker 2

Was like but then again, like, it is the middle of the summer.

Speaker 2

It Yeah.

Speaker 2

Was playing three on three, so it's it's different.

Speaker 2

But then opening night, we played Golden State.

Speaker 2

Got my literally my first ever, like, any level, any anything DMP didn't play.

Speaker 0

First time.

Speaker 0

First time ever.

Speaker 2

And I was like, what the hell?

Speaker 2

Like, I

Speaker 0

didn't So you went in game like I'm gonna play?

Speaker 2

I thought that I should've.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

But From camp Yeah.

Speaker 0

Preseason.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Like, I'm a But, like, I I understood why.

Speaker 2

But then game two, we were we played Phoenix, and we were getting beat by, like, 30 going into the fourth.

Speaker 2

And Frank was like, yeah.

Speaker 2

Go ahead.

Speaker 2

And out the gate, we we made a run.

Speaker 2

And after that, it was kinda just

Speaker 0

Oh, you were without a rotation?

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 2

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

So I mean, there was a there was a little, you know, stent towards the end of the year where I wasn't playing great.

Speaker 2

Got a couple more DMPs.

Speaker 2

But basically from there on out, was in, you know, rotation consistently.

Speaker 0

Especially, like, you don't get those DMPs late, but you've already shown over the course of the year.

Speaker 0

And you know, like, more work, more time.

Speaker 0

You're like

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I'm doing this.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

And I remember I think it was we got eliminated from the playing game, and we were in Phoenix.

Speaker 2

We played Phoenix the night before, and I think we stayed and we were about to go somewhere.

Speaker 2

Somehow Summer League got brought up and he was someone said something to him or asked him something about Summer League, if I should play Summer League.

Speaker 2

And he was like, No, just get in the gym all summer and just grind.

Speaker 2

And I was like, oh, perfect.

Speaker 2

I don't have to play bad basketball and just focus on myself.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

这

That's a

Speaker 0

lot of bad basketball in summer.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I mean, it's cool.

Speaker 1

I get it.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It's a necessary thing,

Speaker 2

但

but it's

Speaker 0

not for everybody.

Speaker 1

Was not for him.

Speaker 1

对。

No.

Speaker 1

没错。

No.

Speaker 1

Not not the way he was trending.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It makes no sense to go out there and waste those few weeks where you could be using those for, you know, locking in on what he needs to be locking in

Speaker 2

on.

Speaker 2

Actually working.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

What did you see in him early where you were like, I know the way going and stuff, where that first year, were you like, I see this?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I mean, it didn't take long for me.

Speaker 1

Like, does not take long for me when it comes to talent, for me to recognize talent, but also like, I like IQ.

Speaker 1

Yeah, that's the one thing that I gravitate towards faster than anything.

Speaker 1

Everyone's talented in the area.

Speaker 1

Everyone has talent.

Speaker 1

Don't matter if you're the fifteenth guy, two way guy, you know, rookie, fifth, fifteen year guy.

Speaker 1

It doesn't matter.

Speaker 1

Everyone has talent.

Speaker 1

We all here for a reason.

Speaker 1

But what what my basketball mechanism and hard drive attached to is guys that know how

Speaker 0

to play the game.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And it's a reason why, like he's saying, know, came into the league or whatever, 06/5180, whatever the case may be, bulked up a little bit now.

Speaker 1

But it's a reason why he's not the fastest, not the most athletic, you know, but he's averaging 25 a game.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And playing at a high level.

Speaker 1

And at any given night, he's number one on the opposing team's depth chart of this is what we gotta take away.

Speaker 1

Once you start getting at that level, once you start being on opposing teams depth chart of like Scout.

Speaker 1

We got Luka, AR, me, you know, is We gotta take this away.

Speaker 1

If we can't give him no Arab space, we can't give him no Like, I could see the talent there, but also saw the the knowledge of the game and the willingness to want to work.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

That's I'm Yeah.

Speaker 1

If you working, bro,

Speaker 2

if if you wanna

Speaker 1

you working

Speaker 0

IQ and work and sound

Speaker 2

技术。

skill.

Speaker 2

我

I

Speaker 1

不行。

can't.

Speaker 1

Can't.

Speaker 1

How can I not love you?

Speaker 1

是的。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

How can I not love you?

Speaker 1

I just just my makeup.

Speaker 0

Tell me about the playmaking.

Speaker 0

Were you were you in high school, were you a playmaker as well or were you more of a scorer?

Speaker 2

没有。

No.

Speaker 2

Playing alongside my brother my freshman year and sophomore year, he took the majority of shots.

Speaker 2

So my job was to get him the ball.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

My job we Get him the ball.

Speaker 0

He got away.

Speaker 2

That year, we actually played like an actual white team.

Speaker 2

We ran set after set.

Speaker 2

We would get threes after threes after threes.

Speaker 2

An actual white team?

Speaker 2

And then he left, and we we just had to we just started running.

Speaker 2

Like, we was like, we're gonna press and run.

Speaker 2

That's good.

Speaker 2

But yeah.

Speaker 2

No.

Speaker 2

It was I I always wanted to be a point guard.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Did you ever play point, like, at any of those stages?

Speaker 0

Like, in your freshman year where you point for your brother?

Speaker 2

Was it just more like I was I was basically point guard from when I started playing basketball till I went to college.

Speaker 2

And then, you know, going to college, you know, you you run into guys that are three or four years older and you more physically gifted and better players at the time.

Speaker 2

And I never had a problem with buying into a role to help the team be successful.

Speaker 2

Like my freshman year, I think I scored four points a game.

Speaker 2

I might have played eleven minutes a game.

Speaker 2

Then it just kind of trended forward after that sophomore year.

Speaker 2

Got more time.

Speaker 2

Was able to be myself a little more, but it was still all about what I could do to help us win.

Speaker 2

I felt like we had a really good team by sophomore year at Wichita State.

Speaker 2

We were, I think preseason, third in the country.

Speaker 2

Yeah, we we had a really, really good team, but that all came crumbling down.

Speaker 2

We got the first round of the the tournament.

Speaker 2

But yeah, it was from then on out, like, I understood that I'm gonna run into guys that are better than me.

Speaker 2

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Like, it's no different than in the NBA.

Speaker 2

对的。

Like Mhmm.

Speaker 2

There's gonna be times on a night basis where him and Lucas got it going.

Speaker 2

Like, what can I do to, you know, plug and play and help our team win?

Speaker 2

You know, I think that's the beautiful thing about basketball is you don't have to go out and score 30 to affect the game.

Speaker 2

You can do a lot of things.

Speaker 0

When you were a freshman averaging four a game, were you still like, I'm the best dude out here?

Speaker 0

Like, you

Speaker 2

Oh, no.

Speaker 2

I fried everybody in practice.

Speaker 0

Practice.

Speaker 0

You knew it.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So it was, like, a matter of fitting into what the coach was expecting and all that.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I mean, the last thing I wanted to do was, you know Yeah.

Speaker 2

Step on the wrong foot and not play.

Speaker 2

Like, that was

Speaker 0

That's interesting.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 2

That was my

Speaker 0

because a lot of guys, if they're frying everyone in practice and they're getting put in a box

Speaker 2

It wasn't easy.
