小说。
Novel.
So I came home and then had dinner, and then I was feeling really down.
I'm still feeling kind of down even right now.
In December, I get this voice note from Caty.
Not really, like, mad at anyone or anything.
I think it's just, like, feeling a little overwhelmed.
But yeah.
After three months in Seoul, it's Caty's last week before she leaves K pop art school and flies back home to LA.
Since she touched down in Korea, she's been working like crazy to pursue her dream to be an idol.
At least twenty hours of lessons every week, even more hours practicing, countless late nights, and 11 auditions in three months, adding to a grand total of around 30 over the past few years as an aspiring idol.
And the biggest, most important audition, Caty's dream company, The Black Label.
Caty
Caty gave it her all and was pretty satisfied with her performance in the audition.
Most people who pass the auditions or like the companies are interested in, like, they let you know very fast.
So usually, if it's kind of like two weeks have passed and there hasn't really been any news, you kind of just like already have a sense that, oh, like, I probably didn't pass.
It's been a fortnight.
So Caty can say for sure she hasn't been cast by the black label.
Another audition bites the dust.
Caty is usually remarkably resilient, but I can tell these rejections are starting to wear her down.
For the first time, I hear defeat in her voice.
I think that's definitely one of my biggest fears is that people no longer believe in me.
People no longer believe that I can do it.
People no longer believe that I'm right for this.
I don't know.
I think it's just like sometimes a little frustrating because I want to do the best that I can, but it's like I can't do it.
The thing is, Caty has to make a decision and soon.
She's about to leave Seoul.
So should she keep pursuing this K pop dream, or is it time to give it up?
I don't really know what else to say.
I just like I'm feeling really bad right now.
From novel and USG audio, I'm Haeryun Kang and this is the final episode of Mission K Pop.
The story of one woman's quest to become an idol and how her journey illuminates the beautiful and chaotic world of K Pop.
Episode eight, Hope Torture.
It's one of the very last days of the year, three months after a slightly nervous Caty first passed through the halls of K pop art school.
Every week since then, we've entered the gray block of a building, made our way through the stench of potpourri on the 1st Floor, and ridden up the same elevator.
Even the automated announcements feel like an old friend now.
While the school feels familiar, there's one thing that has changed, Caty's skills.
She's mastered the armpit angles of K pop choreography.
And I've seen these same advances in her singing too.
She can hit notes that seemed impossible just a few months ago.
At first, I think of this last stretch of Caty's time in Seoul kinda like the final week of school, you know, after exams when everybody's basically cruising through classes.
But it turns out to be anything but cruisy.
你好。
Hello.
你好。
Hello.
Good morning.
Also, don't mind me.
I'm gonna be doing my dishes right now.
I found out yesterday that we have an audition eval today.
考核。
An evaluation.
With less than twenty four hours notice, Caty is told by Cass that she has to perform in front of a panel of teachers, including her dance teacher, Seok-Eun.
They're going to assess her skills and progress.
It could help her decide if her K pop dream is still worth pursuing or if she should consider other career options when she returns to LA.
I don't
The day after I get this voice memo, I meet Caty at CAS just before her eval at 6PM.
And do you know what you're doing today?
No.
What I'm just assuming is that it's basically just like an audition simulation.
And then I throw her a curveball.
Some news I just found out, which I thought she already knew, that she's up first.
我?
I am?
啥?
What?
等等。
Wait.
I'm first?
What the heck?
That means Caty has no time to steady herself in the waiting room.
There, normally, she can look into the evaluation space through a window, watching the other performances through the gaps in the curtains, getting a sense of how they work.
This time, she's going in totally blind.
I'm really confused right now.
Like, I actually just like, I don't even know what this is going to entail.
Yeah.
I don't I don't know.
Should we get going?
What time is It is fifty four.
Okay.
我们
We
speed walk over to the room where the evaluations are taking place.
The 6th Floor studio, the same place Caty has dance lessons.
Today, in this familiar room, there are familiar faces, but with unrecognizable expressions.
Caty
Caty's teachers have been transformed into judges.
Caty's dance teacher, Seok-Un, isn't grinning like usual, but looks sternly at the stack of papers in front of him.
There's also Caty's vocal teacher, Yoda, and another manager at CAS.
While Caty puts down her bag, nervous at the change in energy, the teachers shuffle their grading sheets.
Caty introduces herself in Korean, the way she always does in auditions.
She says she can also speak English and Chinese, and she's a songwriter who's confident in dancing.
Caty's
poised, ready to carve up the stage with her original rap and choreography.
But then something happens that makes me go, for real?
Caty steps onto a scale in front of everyone.
And on the grading sheet, the judges write down her weight.
I've heard weighing is pretty common in K pop evals.
And I know that in official auditions, weight is listed in everyone's application file.
But I feel shocked to actually see it.
Under the bright studio lights, Caty looks a bit flushed, but she doesn't miss a beat and moves on to the next act.
Okay.
All around the world down running.
Okay.
Gotti?
Educated Iogi, Gotti, you don't even really know me.
Why you?
Looking at my looks.
My brain's his money.
The judges scribble on the criteria sheets in front of them.
I'll be the dream of your dreams, the beauty and beast.
You know that I slay.
It's a rare sight, but I think I see Caty nervous.
I've heard her perform this many times before, but there's something in her voice that tells me she's not quite in the zone tonight.
So all I wanna do because I got the juice.
Don't mess with me.
Don't touch me.
I'm all day.
Caty
After finishing her vocal performance, Caty goes straight into her dance routine.
Again, something is missing.
It feels to me like Caty's going through the motions, that she just wants to get this over with.
Then, come the critiques.
What might represent the sum of Caty's grueling efforts at CAS.
I feel like I've seen tangible improvements in Caty for the past three months, but tonight wasn't it.
I'm no expert though.
What do her teachers have to say?
I'm a little dumbfounded at the start because the very first thing the judges comment on, again, Caty's weight.
They praise her for having lost four kilograms or around nine pounds.
Your gestures while singing are too similar.
It feels repetitive.
Earlier, there were rap parts and vocal parts.
The gestures you use when you're rapping should be completely different from those you use when you're singing.
I would like you to practice distinguishing these more clearly.
Your dance energy and eye contact are excellent.
This seems like a concrete note from Caty's dancing teacher, Suk-Won.
But then he says
You look a little little bit nervous.
Caty
Caty said she was surprised by the evaluation Yeah.
That she didn't even know it was happening.
Don't be honest.
K.
It's the
same for everyone else.
Everything about auditions is sudden.
Always be prepared for the unexpected.
Suk-K-one also says that while he can see Caty trying to project confidence, she needs to really embody it.
This strikes me as a kind of abstract note.
How do you really embody confidence when it's not always there?
Does he just want her to get better at faking it no matter what?
Finish.
And then, it's over.
Caty hurries out of the studio.
So how did it go today?
It definitely went the way I expected it to.
I was not expecting super great results.
I think everything that they said, it all, like, makes sense to me.
I think I just, like, wish that I could have done better.
What did Seoul Gooseom say that struck you?
I think overall, like, the theme of my feedback today was just, everything is really good, but it's just, like, there's a lot of anxiety that's, like, holding me back, and the anxiety is very apparent to everyone that's watching me.
There's something else that's playing on Caty's nerves and on my mind.
It made me super nervous because this is the first time I've ever been weighed before at a evaluation.
The girl that went right after me, she actually hasn't eaten since two days ago.
That's awful.
I was just like, I had a big bowl of noodles this morning.
On the surface, Caty seems relaxed about how the eval went.
Not great, not terrible, but also not providing much in the way of a clear answer about her future in k pop.
Later that night though, that voice note appears.
The one you heard up top of this episode.
And I get a glimpse of how she really feels.
I was definitely very, very caught off guard.
I just, like, was not mentally prepared at all to have it, like, sprung up so suddenly.
My biggest fear is to become, like, viewed as someone that isn't serious or, like, isn't trying that hard.
Like and I guess, like, this goes back to the whole thing about, like, me caring a lot about, like, what other people think about me.
I think that stresses me out a lot.
It always feels like I don't have enough time.
And, like, today just, like, really really threw me for a loop.
So I don't know.
I'm having a crisis.
I keep thinking about how much suffering Caty's dream brings.
There's this idea in Korean called, which literally means hope torture.
And it's something that I've thought about throughout Caty's journey.
Hope torture is that illusion on the horizon that makes you keep going, keep hoping.
Even though you may never reach your goal, the hope fuels you and tortures you.
In the midst of Caty's crisis, with only days to go before she flies home to LA, she gets back the results of her YGX evaluations.
YGX is the other academy where Caty has been taking classes.
Remember from the last episode, if she does well enough in the YGX evals, she'd be promoted to a higher audition class.
And this would be a green light Caty desperately needs, a sign that she should continue with K pop.
I could kind of work my way up through the ranks at YGX, maybe get to develop some more personal relations with the people in that company, the people at that academy, then I could have a better chance of entering black label still.
So cut to one of the last days of December.
Caty
Caty was on a manic Korean bus ride.
It's like Fast and Furious.
The bus drivers in Seoul have just no patience.
Caty was on the way to practice, getting literal whiplash on the bus when emotional whiplash hit.
That's when she found out the YGX results.
I was actually just, like, sitting on the bus.
Was, like, listening to music and just, like, chilling.
But then my friend texted in our group chat, and she was, oh my gosh.
No one made it.
And then that prompted me to check the Instagram.
YGX had posted the story, like, unfortunately, no one from the 17 to 24 age group has been promoted.
Caty
That included Caty.
She hadn't made it to a higher class.
But this time, she refused to take no for an answer.
So she organized a meeting with a YGX teacher a couple
of days later.
It was a stormy night that night, like it was raining quite hard actually.
It was like the rooms are all steamy, but like it was like super cold outside.
She sat across from the teacher and asked her, what's up?
Why didn't I get promoted?
But the teacher answered with another question.
Caty,
Caty, do you want to be an idol or an artist?
It caught me kind of off guard because to me, like, idol was always a type of artist.
You know, when she asked me that, I was just like, oh, like, I'm not really sure what you mean by that.
She was just like, so like idols are influencers who sell music on the side.
It's like, people are just obsessed with you.
And so like, whatever you put out, whatever you sell, whatever you think, like people will just buy it because it came from you.
Like, not because of the actual thing itself.
She was just like, if you wanna be an artist, then you have to get like really, really good at your craft.
Like, you have to train to be, like, one of the best.
But if you wanted to be an idol, like, even a solo idol, she was just like, honestly speaking, like, these days, it's just about looks and age.
And so all she can really advise me to do is just, like, diet as hard as I can.
The teacher said if Caty still wants to become an idol, she does have potential.
But at 23, Caty needs to be debut ready if she wants to get cast by a K pop company.
After the consultation, I was actually feeling like a little bit motivated because even though I didn't kind of achieve the goals that I had, which were to, like, pass the Black Label audition or, like, go up to the next level in the YGX audition program, it didn't feel like people didn't believe in me.
They didn't not believe in her?
It seems like Caty is twisting herself in double negatives of self belief.
Because so far, no one has told Caty that her dream is impossible.
And a cynical part of me thinks all of this is good for business.
The dream business.
And Caty's perfectly exposed, vulnerable to anything that may fuel and even exploit her hope.
By the end of Caty's journey in Seoul, many of the familiar faces I'd gotten to know at CAS, like April, had gone home.
She never passed an audition.
I did see a couple of students who got signed as trainees by an entertainment company, But the others weren't as lucky.
Then there are others who want to return to keep trying their luck in Seoul, like wannabe K pop dancers, Mona and Akaisha.
I honestly couldn't keep track of the constant rotation of all the students.
I think the cast teachers and the CEO would struggle as well.
Everyone feels like a drop in the K pop ocean, a sea of endless faces.
So should Caty continue?
Should she give up?
After all this toing and froing, we run out of time to keep weighing the pros and cons.
She's got a flight to
catch.
我
I
can't believe this is like my last week of reporting here.
I don't know.
The time like here went by super, super fast.
In late December, I say goodbye to Caty on the 1st Floor of CAST, smelling the lobby's signature potpourri stank for the last time.
Next time I see you, we'll be in LA.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, you're leaving tomorrow.
是的
Yeah.
对
Yeah.
And we'll hope you
have a safe trip back Caty and I step outside the Cast Building into the alleyway.
Oh, it's so pretty.
It's snowing.
I wanna know.
I was saying, like, today
is the first day that I've seen it
snow, so, like, continuously fall like this.
Oh, this kind of makes me sad.
Like, snowing makes it feel like, okay, this is ending.
对
Yeah.
You know what I mean?
没错
Yeah.
行吧
Alright.
再见,Caty。
Bye, Caty.
好。
Okay.
Caty
Caty trudges off, arms wrapped around herself.
Snowflakes twirling around her as her hair billows in the wind.
A few students are entering K pop art school.
Some I recognize, some are new.
The street seems illuminated with the glow of their optimism and the flickering orange and green of a seven eleven sign.
Before I know it, Caty disappears into the streets of Seoul.
Today's January 7 and I am standing in front of Caty's home in LA.
It's a sunny day in San Gabriel Valley, LA County.
I'm wearing a t shirt, already feeling light years away from the raging winter in Seoul.
The last time I was here was in September and I was meeting Caty for the very first time.
And she was getting ready to go to Seoul.
She's gone through all these different auditions, met all these different people who told her different things about her appearance and her potential and her skills and this feels like the end of the road.
I'm not really sure what she's gonna do next, but we'll see.
Mid ramble, I step aside to avoid an oncoming car.
There's a car coming.
哦,Caty来了。
Oh, there's Caty.
Hey.
Okay.
Caty
Caty's actually driving into the driveway with a Tesla.
Sorry.
I didn't know
you guys would be here so early.
I jump in the back of Caty's car.
Our destination is Stonefire Grill, a restaurant near Katie's home.
It feels like one of those chain family restaurants you see everywhere in The States, with ridiculously huge portions of food.
There we meet Cat Jung, a 23 year old from the Bay Area.
We will get a Tivo box.
And Louis Sang, also 23 from Temple City.
You and your to go boxes.
You and your lack of eating leftovers.
It's so
baffling to me.
Leftovers are so good.
Caty, Cat, and Louis have all trained at the K Pop Center here in LA and share dreams of becoming idols.
Mhmm.
Lewis and Cat know better than anyone else, Katie's inner turmoil.
As we wait for our food at an outdoor patio, listening to the distant sounds of LA traffic, the three friends discuss how they're all aging out of the auditions.
Every now and then, I'm always like spiraling.
Every couple weeks, I'm like,
is this worth it?
Like, am
I wasting my time?
But then at the same time, I feel like it's like kind of almost a blessing too that we kind of have found something that we like so much that we would want to dedicate our life to it.
Because a lot of my friends, they're like really like stuck.
They're like, I don't really know.
There's not really that much that interests me.
I don't really know what I wanna do with my life.
So in some way, yes, it kinda sucks, but yes, it's also kinda nice to, like, have a goal to work towards Yeah.
Even though we don't know if it might happen or not.
At the end of the day, I feel like all of us know what reality is in front of us and where our abilities lie, but that doesn't mean we can't have these dreams.
I think if you just kind of let me be, never know.
Like, I might be able to do it.
This whole discussion makes me think of a song that I really want them to hear.
Do you guys know the band Chaolim?
They shake their heads.
None of them do.
They're one of the most popular Korean rock bands, but they have this song called Idol, which is like one of my favorite songs when I think about this topic.
Can I show it to you guys?
Mhmm.
Yeah.
Of course.
Katie, Cat, and Lewis huddle around a cell phone and we all watch the music video for the song.
The video shows students in uniforms looking bored in the classroom.
And then, the stern looking teacher transforms into an idol bursting into song, captivating them with a hypnotic fantasy.
The song embodies Chaorim's poppy style of alternative rock.
In a cacophony of energetic guitar riffs and powerful drumming, the lead vocalist, Yuna Kim, belts out the lyrics in a falsetto.
I know all of this is unrealistic, but at least I continue to dream in this strange world.
As Yuna Kim hauntingly screams the final line of the song, in her voice, I can hear the unfaltering passion of Caty and so many other K pop dreamers.
The word idol reverberates around the stone fire grill, and I tell Caty, Cat, and Lewis why I wanted to share this song.
Because this industry is dominated by, like, really young people who are dreaming these, like fantastical dreams of being an idol and it's like nearly impossible.
It's also very easy to be cynical about it and like think that, okay, they're just young and they don't know what they're doing.
But this song is just like a resistance against that cynicism.
And it's just like a really empathetic way of looking at people's dreams.
And like just saying, okay, it may be childish, it may be impossible, but like so what?
This is my way of like engaging with the world.
I think the song has a very good message.
When you take risks, it's when you can create something new and beautiful for yourself in this world.
I think like having a dream that's so grand is actually a really, really beautiful thing.
And it's kind of like, in a way, what keeps us as like people going.
We finish our meals.
Both Cat and Lewis take home leftovers.
There's somewhere else I have to visit on my trip to LA.
The place I first saw Caty perform, the K pop center.
Lydia interview at KPC.
好的。
Alright.
Lydia, can you introduce yourself?
Over the past couple of weeks, it's been unclear what Caty would do next.
Just put this whole K pop dream to rest or summon the energy to keep going.
I've come here with Caty to talk to her vocal coach, Lydia Peck, who you heard all the way back in episode one.
In a padded recording studio, Caty and I sit next to Lydia and we all discuss what's holding Caty back.
Everybody has this mentality of doubt and that's natural for human beings.
That really is the only setback is that wall.
Lydia says pretty much the same thing that the dance teacher, Suk-Eun, said at the CAS eval.
I'm not unconfident in myself, but at the same time, I think I do still seek a bit of validation from, like, my teachers, which is the comment that they always give me.
She's a great dancer.
She can sing.
She can write.
She is intelligent.
She has it all.
But it's just literally that w two f mentality, like, going into it, being like, I I don't care what anybody's gonna think.
I'm just gonna do what I do.
And it's just that little bit that really allows, like, everything to just, like, come off of you.
Like, it's just the baggage of of all that thought and weight and, like, assumption of what other people might be thinking.
What is it like being in an environment where you constantly need to sell confidence, but the same environment constantly threatens the confidence?
I think it's definitely very tough.
I can feel my confidence fluctuate super, super greatly.
I would be doing so well, like, one day in class, but then, like, in the evals or, like, in the auditions, the results wouldn't be what you would expect them to be.
That would literally, like, knock my confidence, like, so much.
But I feel like, in a way, as I do that more, it starts to kind of make me care less because you start to realize that, like, no matter how much you care, it won't change anything.
Caring less?
Caty sounds almost cynical.
Or is this another form of magical thinking?
A necessary self delusional defense mechanism to keep going in a ruthless world like K pop?
If you tell yourself you care less, you get hurt less.
Right?
Well, as we're talking, Caty turns to Lydia.
She says she has something to announce.
I'm leaving again in two weeks.
It turns out Caty is going back to Korea, back to K pop art school.
又来?
Again?
I'm going for just like another three months and then we'll see from there.
Oh my gosh.
Yeah.
That's fun.
Oh my gosh.
You're going when are you going back?
I'm leaving on the twenty first, So I'll be here for like two more weeks.
Yay.
I'm always like, don't leave, but go because I know it's gonna be awesome.
不过。
While
Lydia's obviously overjoyed that Caty's returning to Korea, I'm a little shocked.
Let's face it.
Caty's chances of being cast by a K pop company are below slim.
They are for anyone with this aspiration and even more so if you're not Korean and if you're Caty's age.
I feel a little on edge about how she'll cope if things don't work out.
If and when she's finally kicked the K pop can to the end of the road.
It's something K pop scholar, Suk-Young Kim, thinks about too.
One way to define K pop is doing the impossible, pushing for something more, better, newer.
And at the end of the day, it's the people who have to perform that.
And only only tiny bit will have recognizability and financially viable career.
So what happens to those dropouts?
And we don't have a systematic mental health care to help them cope with it and for them to succeed in the second act of their life.
So I think there has to be a pathway for them to succeed and, live a life, to their fullest.
It's not just Caty that I'm worried about.
K-pop
The popularity of K pop continues to rise globally.
So with K pop still booming, there will undoubtedly be more and more Catys.
Young, hopeful people putting their hearts on the line to become idols under the harsh gaze of K pop judgment.
How will they deal with it?
Maybe the essence of what they need to know is something that Caty's mom, Sherry, says to me on this trip.
She just wants Caty to know she doesn't need to prove herself.
So I have to keep in telling her, you are good enough, but don't let people judging you to disturb your feeling and to destroy your learning.
Okay?
Because you are good enough.
You have a passion.
It's not enjoy the fruit, which at the end.
A lot of times people become a superstar or something.
They're really not happy.
They have no life.
I want Caty be happy.
Happy, I would say, is the only measure of success.
Happiness and inner peace.
But in an industry like K pop, so much easier said than done.
The return to Seoul is also going to cost Caty's family thousands of dollars and require a huge investment of time and energy.
But, is on board.
We support her.
I sense when we talk, she still want to give try.
Then I just tell her, you have to try.
To try.
Maybe this belief in trying is about wanting control.
We all want to feel in control of our lives and our destiny.
But in an industry as fickle and complex as k pop, no matter how hard you work, you can't know the outcome.
And Caty, who's so passionate and ambitious, is in free fall in a world that can't be controlled.
So what can she do?
What is in her power?
For Caty, it's one thing and one thing only, trying her best.
It's like the lyrics to her song.
You think I'm powerless to try, but I wear my scars like wings that fly.
I think the fact that there still is a chance makes me really wanna try just so that, like, in the end, there's no regret.
If I gave up right now, it would always kind of have this, like, what if?
What if I just kept going for a little bit?
What if I just tried a little bit more?
Then maybe something could have happened.
For me, this ending is bittersweet.
I see all these traps and pitfalls of aspiring to be an idol, of dreaming to become the glittering product of a for profit industry.
But when I turn my eyes back to Caty and see how happy she is risking something so crazy and grand, I also feel glad.
I'm glad Caty can choose to dream.
I'm glad she can return to Seoul.
And I'm glad to know this complex, intelligent, hardworking human being.
I hope she finds kind people to love and hold on to along the way inside this beautiful and chaotic world of K pop.
And so, we end this series with one last voice memo from Caty.
It's a goodbye from me and a hello from her.
Well, in Korean, we use the same word for both.
好
Good
morning.
Guess who's back?
So it's my first day back at CAS since coming back to Seoul on my own.
Definitely feels a little weird, but, yeah, I'm approaching the CAS Building right now.
Okay.
I am going up to the elevator.
It's like it feels familiar yet very foreign at the same time to be here right now.
Okay.
Walking in.
