Another long day of research was coming to a close.
敏真擦了擦额头的汗水，感激地看着太阳准备在湖面上落下。
Min Jin wiped the sweat off of her forehead and was grateful to be watching the sun getting ready to set over the lake.
她站在壮观的奥维斯湖岸边，看着细小的波浪缓缓涌来，尽管白天很热，湖水却很凉爽。
She stood along the shore of the majestic Oves Lake, watching the small waves creep up towards The water was cool despite the warmth of the day.

The lake stretched out before her in all directions, overwhelming in size.

It was even bigger in size than Hovskoye Lake, although Ulfs Lake was unique in that it was a saltwater lake.

Today, she and Handa had floated their way out to meet with some of the birds who called Ulfs their home.

A day of interviewing birds from afloat in the middle of the lake had tired her out.

Handa was happy with their collection of data though, and they had spoken with many birds who migrated through here and could discuss all of the different places they traveled.

This helped Honda spot patterns and compare how Mongolia was changing compared to other countries and areas.

They were now officially the farthest Minjin ever had been from Ulaanbatar, having traveled here to Ulfs province, the farthest Northwest province of Mongolia.

She pictured a map of Mongolia in her mind, putting imaginary pinpoints of all the places she had managed to visit so far.

It was pretty amazing to think of the size of Mongolia and the way she had been able to explore it.

She wasn't any closer to finding a place she wanted to call home, but she was getting a beautiful sense of her country and all of the incredible places that were a part of it.

The waves splashed up and onto the hem of her shorts, startling her out of her thoughts.

At the same time, Handa called her back to the rented jeep they were using, parked just over from the beach in a tiny patch of grass that the humans wouldn't bother inspecting.
她转身走向吉普车，思索着今晚的晚餐安排。
She turned and headed over to the jeep, wondering what they would do for dinner this evening.
德总是有想共进晚餐的朋友或熟人，所以敏珍通常让她来决定饮食计划。
De always had a friend or connection that she wanted to visit with over meals, so Min Jin usually let her figure out their plans for food.
只要有奶酪，她就心满意足。
Just as long as there was cheese, she was happy.
返回奥兰甘的路上噪音很大，风声在耳边呼啸成一片模糊。
The ride back into Olangam was loud, the whipping around them in a blur.
嘈杂得根本无法交谈。
Much too loud for a conversation.
于是敏静只是向后靠去，在颠簸的石子路上休息着头。
So Min Jin just sat back and rested her head as they bumped over the rocky road.
很快，省会城市映入眼帘，韩德转回铺好的道路，让一些噪音安静下来。
Soon the province's capital city popped into view, and Han de turned back onto the paved road, letting some of the noise quiet down.
她转向敏静问道：'今晚你想去看场表演吗？'
She turned to Min Jin and asked, Would you like to go to a performance tonight?
敏静有些惊讶，但在韩德打开转向灯驶入建筑群之间时，她看向了她。
Min Jin was surprised, but she looked to Han as she flipped the turn signal and headed in between the buildings.
'当然，那会很好。'
Sure, that would be nice.
'是什么样的表演？'
What kind of performance?
她问道。
She asked.
'我有个朋友在一个传统蒙古表演团体，他们今晚在镇上的咖啡馆有场演出。'
A friend of mine is in a traditional Mongolian performance group and they are putting on a show at a cafe in town tonight.
他邀请我们去听演出，她回答道。
He invited us to come and listen, she replied.
敏静暗自微笑，知道自己对本田和她那无穷无尽的人脉判断没错。
Min Jin smiled to herself, knowing she had been right about Honda and her never ending connections.
他们至今还没去过一个她完全不认识任何人的地方。
They still hadn't managed to travel somewhere where she didn't know someone.
听起来很棒，敏静说道。
That sounds great, Min Jin said.
我住在市场时曾听过一些人类表演的片段或收音机里播放的音乐，她说。
I've heard some snippets of humans performing before or music being played on the radio when I lived at the market, she said.
但我从未现场看过表演，更不用说是由一群老鼠领衔的演出了。
But I've never been to a performance before and certainly not one led by a group of mice.

You are in for a treat, Honda said enthusiastically.

I think you will love it.
一小时后，他们抵达酒店，梳洗更衣完毕，正前往咖啡馆。
An hour later they had reached their hotel, cleaned up and changed their clothes, and were now making their way to the cafe.
那是个凉爽宜人的夜晚，微风渐起，他们小心行走，避开人行道和人类步道，沿着建筑物与道路间隐藏的老鼠小径前进。
It was a cool and pleasant evening, a slight wind picking up as they walked carefully, avoiding the sidewalks and human footpaths and sticking to the mouse trails hidden between buildings and roads.
他们来到一栋红色建筑的侧面，木墙边缘的油漆正在剥落。
They reached the side of a red building, the paint peeling along the edges of the side of the wooden wall.
墙面上藏着一扇老鼠大小的门，门把手对本田和敏珍来说勉强可见。
Hidden in the wall was a tiny mouse sized door, its handle just barely visible to Honda and Min Jin.
本田走到门前停下，掏出笔记寻找暗号敲门方式。
Honda reached the door and paused, pulling out her notes to look for the secret knock.
她看完笔记后伸出爪子，握拳以特定节奏谨慎敲门。
She read her notes and then reached her paw for the door, curling her hand in a fist and knocking in a careful pattern.
两下，四下敲击。
Two Four knocks.
停顿。
Pause.
两下快速的敲门声。
Two fast knocks.
一下缓慢的敲门声。
One slow knock.
然后她嘴里轻声哼起一段谨慎的低调旋律，低语道：我们为和平而来。
And then a careful low song out of her mouth where she whispers saying, we come in peace.
门应声而开，敏贞跟着汉达走进一条色彩鲜艳的隧道，沿途墙壁上绘满歌唱的小鼠与蒙古自然风光的壁画。
The door swung open and Min Jin followed Handa into a brightly painted tunnel, murals of singing mice and Mongolian nature covering the walls as they walked.
他们循着喧闹声走到隧道尽头，攀爬梯子后发现自己置身于一个灯火通明、小鼠尺寸的咖啡馆。
They followed noise down to the end of the tunnel, where they climbed up a ladder and found themselves in a brightly lit mouse sized cafe.
前方设有闪耀着聚光灯和麦克风的舞台，扬声器里播放着轻柔音乐，小鼠们围坐在小桌旁享用奶酪、面包和沙拉组成的餐点。
There was a stage at the front, shining with bright lights, microphones, and Soft music was playing over the loudspeakers, and mice sat around the space at small tables, eating their meals of cheese, bread, and salad.
汉达环顾四周发现了朋友们，示意敏贞跟她走向角落的餐桌。
Handa looked around and saw her friends, motioning for Minjin to follow her over to a table in the corner.
欢迎光临，小鼠们在他们入座时说道，随即展开一连串自我介绍与名字交换的旋风。
Welcome, the mice said as they sat, a whirlwind of introductions and names being exchanged as they sat.
敏金了解到坐在她旁边的两只老鼠分别叫娜拉娜努和达莉亚，它们是两只活泼的浅棕色老鼠，年龄与她相仿。
Minjin learned that the mice sitting next to her were called Narananu and Daria, two cheerful light brown mice who were close to her age.
很高兴认识你，娜拉娜努向她打招呼道。
It's nice to meet you, Narananu greeted her.
有同龄人来这里作客真有趣。
It's fun to have some our age here to visit with.
是啊，我也很高兴认识你们，敏金微笑着回应她们俩。
Yeah, it's nice to meet you too, Min Jin replied, smiling at them both.
你们是来洛通戈姆旅游还是住在这里？
Are you visiting Lothongom or do you live here?
我们的父亲是今晚表演乐团的歌手之一，所以我们跟着他们在全国各地巡演。
Our dad is one of the singers in the group that is performing tonight, so we travel with them around the country as they perform.
但我们已经在这座老香港城待了几天了，达莉亚解释道。
But we've been here in Old Hong Kong for a few days now, Daria explained.
真酷，敏金说道，开始讲述她自己找房子的经历以及和本田一起做的工作。
How cool, Min Jin said, beginning to explain her own house search and work she was doing with Honda.
女孩们一边等待一边继续交谈，但很快灯光暗下，显然演出即将开始。
The girls continued to talk as they waited, but soon the lights went down and it was clear the performance was about to begin.
敏珍在椅子上坐直身子，满怀期待地张望，准备聆听和观看即将发生的一切。
Min Jin straightened in her chair and looked expectantly, ready to hear and see what was happening.
人群安静下来，窃窃私语取代了交谈，很快扩音器里传来响亮的声音：现在，有请霍凡好友团登上老翁岩咖啡馆的舞台。
The crowd quieted, whispering instead of talking, and soon a loud voice came on the loudspeaker to say: And now, please welcome to the Old Ongam Cafe, the Hofan Homie Troop.
掌声热烈欢快，很快四只老鼠登上舞台，每只都穿着色彩鲜艳的莳萝服饰和传统的棕色尖头鞋。
The clapping was loud and joyful, and soon four mice came on stage, each wearing beautifully colored dill and the traditional brown pointed toe shoes.
他们鞠躬致意后，其中两只坐下，手里拿着马头琴。
They bowed and then two of them sat, holding horse headed fiddles in their hands.
另外两只站在中央，嘴边挂着麦克风。
The other two stood in the middle, microphones at their mouths.

Together, the cafe fell silent, and it seemed as if everyone was holding a collective breath, waiting for the first note to come.
突然，老鼠们拨动了琴弦上的第一个音符，旋律骤然响起，在墙壁间弹跳回荡，声波如浪潮般在他们周围振动。
All of a sudden, the mice hit the first note on the strings of their fiddles, and the melody took off, bouncing off and around the walls, vibrating around them in a wave of sound.
当老鼠们开始唱歌时，敏珍惊讶得张大了嘴。
Min Jin's jaw dropped as the mice began to sing.
这不像她以前听过的任何歌唱，而是一种全新的形式。
It wasn't singing like she had heard it before, but something entirely new.
从它们喉咙里发出的声音不完全是词语，更像是体内延伸出的振动不断回荡，无形的声带创造出敏珍听过的最迷人、最美丽的音乐。
The sounds coming out of their throats were not exactly words, but what sounded like vibrations stretching out from within them and reverberating around and around, invisible ribbons of sound creating the most intriguing, beautiful music Min Jin had ever heard.
她低头看了看入座时分发的节目单，发现这种表演被称为喉音唱法，或称呼麦。
She glanced down at the piece of paper they had been handed when they sat down, and saw that what they were doing was called throat singing, or Humi.

The notes danced together and swirled around the room, filling her ears with what sounded like horse hooves hitting the ground, wind whistling between mountain peaks, and water rushing through a river.

On they went, barely taking breaths, the songs bursting forth from their throats, deep and powerful, even as they created pitches that varied and flowed in ways Min Jin had never heard before.

She felt it in her bones, the stories they were trying to tell.
歌曲结束时寂静降临，敏珍几乎要哭出来。
When silence fell at the end of the song, Min almost cried.

Wiping away a tear or two, she clapped as loudly as she could, joining the whole room's applause.
音乐会的剩余部分过得飞快。
The rest of the concert passed too quickly.

Min barely moved as she sat and listened with her full attention.

When it ended, she wished it could have continued, but turned to Narananu and Daria with appreciation.

That was incredible, she said, smiling as large as she could.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Narananu said, smiling at her.
“这是你第一次听喉唱吗？”
Was it your first time hearing throat singing?
“是的，第一次，”她回答。
Yes, it was, she said.
我完全没想到它能如此美妙。
I had no idea it could be so beautiful.
你也会唱吗？
Do you sing also?
还不会，达莉娅回答道。
Not yet, Daria answered.
喉唱需要大量训练和练习，才能让你的声带协同工作发出不同的声音。
Throat singing takes a lot of training and practice to help your vocal cords be able to work together to make the different sounds.
爸爸会帮我们练习一些基础训练，但他也希望我们先增强声带力量和对音乐的理解。
Our dad helps us practice some of the begin exercises, but he also wants us to strengthen our vocal cords and understanding of music first.

Wow.

I can't wait to hear you when you one day you do sing, Min Jin said, smiling at them both.
我知道你们一定会很出色。
I know you'll be amazing.

Thanks, Nan Nan Nu replied.
对我们来说，这既是一门艺术，也是蒙古文化的重要组成部分。
For us, it's an art, but it's also an important part of Mongolian culture.
喉唱是我们身份独特的一部分，也是一种讲述故事的形式。
Throat singing is a unique part of who we are, and it's also a form of storytelling.
我们的祖先用这些歌曲传承他们的故事，讲述他们来自何方以及他们的经历。
Our ancestors used these songs to pass down their stories and taught to talk about where they were from and what they experienced.
敏珍点点头，回想着今晚听到的那些歌曲。
Min Jin nodded, thinking about the songs she had heard tonight.
它们都是故事。
They were stories.
达莉娅接着说，当你听到喉唱时，你听到的是站在舞台上的人，比如我们的父亲。
Daria continued, When you hear throat singing, you are hearing that person who is standing on the stage, like our dad.

But you are also participating in a long ancient tradition of listening to the songs about our environment.

The horses, the trees, the water, the wind.

These things are still around us now, of course.

But the songs remind us of their importance and how they shaped the lives of those who lived many years ago.

I love that, Min Jin said.

Stories Stories can be words written in a book, but they can also be songs and music.

Min Jin could still hear the throat singing in her mind as they walked back out of the tunnel stepped into the dark evening light.
头顶星光闪烁，归途中老鼠们轻声交谈，一行人回到了敏珍和本田的住处。
The stars shone above them and the mice chatted softly as they walked back to where Min Jin and Honda were staying.
她学到了许多关于不同动物、它们的栖息地、气候变化的影响以及他们到访过的蒙古不同地区的知识。
She was learning so much about different animals, their habitats, the impact of climate change, and different parts of Mongolia that they had visited.
但她知道，终有一天，汉达会完成她的研究，回到大学继续她的工作和教学。
But she knew eventually, Handa would finish her research and go back to her university to do her work and to teach classes.
而敏珍则需要想清楚自己接下来要做什么。
And Min Jin would need to figure out what she was going to do next.

The songs tonight had been full of pitches and notes that were created at the same time, even though that seemed impossible.

They worked together to make a beautiful song.

Min Jin hoped that the same could be true for her adventure.

She was doing different things at the same time, looking for a home and finding ways to explore and learn.

Hopefully, they would create beautiful song, a story about what she was learning and where she was going.

She couldn't wait to try.
