So before we jump into the conversation with Linda, I wanted to start with our quote for the week, which is the senses being explorers of the world, open the way to knowledge.

I think, you know, homeschooling, I am also a Montessori homeschool mama more importantly than anything else.

And I am an author of the upcoming book, The Montessori Homeschooler, a practical guide to getting started.

So it's really exciting.

It is an interesting experience that led me here because Montessori homeschooling, like a lot of my students, a lot of the clients that I work with, it was never part of the plan for me.

I started with big lofty goals of starting my own Montessori school or becoming a superintendent, specifically Montessori in the public sector.

And so I earned a lot of letters after my name to, you know, I spent a lot of time earning degrees and letters to trying to get there and a lot of experience buried in charter schools, private schools, public schools, just so that I can have varying perspectives, because I have this idea in my head that the more experiences you acquire, as a Montessorian would, right?

The more experiences you acquire, the more knowledgeable you are about your area of expertise.

And so I've always been really passionate about working with people from diverse backgrounds and in diverse school settings.

I've worked in California and Texas, and now I've worked with people all over the world from The Philippines, Japan, Europe.

I have clients in every continent except Antarctica, but it is, it's really wonderful to be able to work with people and help them apply this method and this mindset to their specific situation.

And so I'm really excited to jump into our topic because for those of us who know you a little bit, you are the Montessori Homeschooling Gal.

It is just exciting that you're getting your book, and I can't wait for parents to get more bits and pieces of your knowledge.

But I thought we could start with Montessori homeschooling and just what that is.

Yeah, perfect.

What is Montessori homeschooling?

So I feel like for a very long time Montessori was kind of considered a watered down version of Montessori.

And I mean, I don't know, maybe rightfully so, maybe not.

But as it stands today, Montessori education is, I feel, more accessible than ever.

We have much more access to online training.

We have much more access to quality resources.

There's more competition in material manufacturers.

And so all of these things, you know, even though budget wise, it's still pretty pricey, the fact that there's just more of it and it's more visible with social media, There's mentors, there's consultants, there's courses, there's inspired, there's aligned.

So it is kind of expanded its reach.

And so to me, Montessori homeschooling is a natural progression of Montessori, and it's a way to make Montessori education truly more accessible to places around the world that don't have access to training centers, that maybe don't have access to schools, not just here in The United States, in rural areas and things like that, but everywhere around the world, that if you want it and you are able to make some adjustments to make it happen, it can happen.

And parents are, in my opinion, very well equipped because they have a deep love for their child.

And there's nobody that wants what's best for their child other than a parent.

And that's what makes them the best teacher, right?

So in a nutshell, my definition, I guess, would be that Montessori homeschooling is much more than just teaching Montessori lessons at home.

It's a complete shift in how you see education, in how you see your child, and in how you see yourself.

Montessori homeschooling blends structure and it blends the principles of Montessori education with some flexibility and personalization that comes with home based learning that honestly, in my opinion, it's probably the most authentic form of Montessori because we are not under the bureaucracies and the keeping up with the Joneses and the outside pressure imposed upon sometimes as a teacher.

It feels like these standards and things like that are imposed upon you.

All of that is gone and you can truly focus on, you know, doing what's best for kids and doing what's best for the child.

And there's not that limitation there.

So you're not in homeschooling, you're not trying to recreate a classroom, you're creating a prepared home environment where learning is integrated with daily life, and daily life and education are both guided by observation, by connection, and by respect to the child's.

Plus fostering independence is the most misunderstood Montessori concept for babies.

Schooling is one of those big decisions that I feel like you start to think of when you're pregnant.

Your friends are like, Oh, waitlist, they're in my lung.

And you're like, What do I do?

So would you mind sharing what some of the reasons are that families choose to homeschool?

And how would you suggest families evaluate whether Montessori homeschooling is the right decision for them and their child?

Well, there's a plethora of reasons why families I work with chose to homeschool.

But if I had to say it in a nutshell, it's because they want a more intentional child centered approach.

I think that it is no mystery or it's a pretty common knowledge, I think now that schooling as an institution, right, is not really meeting the needs of our children.

Montessori is supposed to be an education for the child's potential, right?

我们本应引导孩子去实现他们的潜能。

And we are supposed to be guiding our children toward meeting that potential.

And I think we live in a time nowadays where that potential is more unknown than ever before.

And we are much more aware that we don't know than ever before, right?

So maybe in the 70s and the 80s and the 90s, the parents knew that the future is unpredictable.

I think that's, you know, commonplace.

Twenty years from now when he's graduating college.

What does that even look like?

And traditional education is still kind of stuck in this era of being content based, content and information based that, you know, you could just throw into chat GBT and that's what it is.

And adults are defaulting, traditional education teachers are defaulting to, you know, trying to control the child.

But as Montessori and so we know that we can't control the children, we can't control the people, we control ourselves and the environment.

And so, you know, I think it's kind of like this coming together moment since COVID that parents have realized, one, that it's liberating, two, that it can be much more intentional.

We're living in a much more globalized society where parents like myself, right, we work remote, we want to travel, we want our children to experience the world.

We recognize that the world is much bigger than it was when we were growing up, right?

And we want to be a part of the real world.

So which is kind of ironic because the naysayers of homeschooling will say, well, how are you preparing your children for the real world?

Well, they're in it.

Yeah, so I mean, some are looking to escape those rigid standards, the overstimulating environments, the adult controlled environments.

Others want to slow down, they want deeper learning, they want to instill very strong family values because the world is just becoming much more individualistic, much more divided and separated.

And actually, a lot of parents really want bilingual education multilingual education.

And that's a big reason to homeschool as well.

So I think homeschooling offers a space for cultural connection or strong identity formation for mental health support.

I mean, a lot of us really need that right now, right?

It offers a space for travel and for simply building strong relationships and in a disconnected world.

It's so interesting because I feel like in the moms that I work with, we often talk about how the village is less accessible, the community is less accessible.

And so it kind of feels like you're building your community and you're keeping it there, you know?

Also to child, the cost of education.

Oh, yes.

It's astronomical.

There's so many times that it's like, okay, I mean, it's expensive to homeschool, but it's even more expensive to send my child.

So if you want, if you are a Montessori parent and you want Montessori education, right?

A lot of people look at my programs and they're like, oh my gosh, it's so expensive.

But really it's like two or three month tuition, you know?

And it's like, you sign up for the program, that's going to help you homeschool for however long, as long as you want.

Send your child to school and it's like 1,500, 1,600, $1,700 a month.

It's just it's astronomical, the tuition, if you want private.

I think that when you're homeschooling, in many ways, you're kind of sheltered from all the consumerism that, that children are constantly kind of being spoon fed in more traditional environments.

That makes a lot of sense.

Would you say that there are myths that are floating around?

Yeah.

Around homeschooling specifically.

So many.

Oh, my gosh.

Let's start with number one, that homeschooled kids are antisocial, right?

Their socialization.

Yeah.

Yeah, that's one, right?

That they're antisocial because they don't have an environment.

I don't know, honestly, I think that this comes from, this is my theory, total theory.

The other day I was out with my son, we went to the post office to drop off some mail.

And the post office was in the shopping center that's right next to a grocery store.
