Speaker 2

Hi, Emily.

Speaker 2

Hello, Emily.

Speaker 1

And hello to our listener legend.

Speaker 2

Hi.

Speaker 2

My name is Julia.

Speaker 2

I live in the Blue Mountains, and I'm from the land of the Doragangandagaura people.

Speaker 1

Thanks, Julia.

Speaker 1

There's lots to marvel at in today's episode.

Speaker 1

We'll take a peek at pictures that scientists have been trying to capture for hundreds of years.

Speaker 1

We'll uncover a well preserved thigh bone from a thylacine and inspect an art exhibition with some unlikely contributors.

Speaker 1

Are you ready?

Speaker 2

I'm ready.

Speaker 2

This is news time.

Speaker 1

You've probably been told not to look directly at the sun, and that's really great advice.

Speaker 1

It's not safe for your eyes.

Speaker 1

But thankfully for your peepers, scientists have been working for years to take good enough pictures of the sun for us to be able to see the surface clearly.

Speaker 1

Until now, all the pictures they've taken have been blurry and unclear.

Speaker 1

It's so hot.

Speaker 1

It's just gas.

Speaker 2

It's a bunch of gas everywhere.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Because the sun is so hot, it's hard to get a good pic.

Speaker 1

But now scientists have managed to get clear photos and videos of the sun's surface.

Speaker 1

They're brilliantly gold, and you can see feathery waves swirling and whirling together.

Speaker 2

Kinda looks like golden leaves on a golden wall.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

有点像

Kinda looks

Speaker 0

like when you're at when you just wanna step on all the leaves.

Speaker 0

It's very mesmerizing.

Speaker 1

It's a pretty magnificent sight, don't you think?

Speaker 1

The swirling surface has given scientists hints of something perplexing about our sun.

Speaker 1

We know that the surface of the sun is about 5,500 degrees Celsius, but the corona, which is the atmosphere above the surface, is about 2,000,000 degrees Celsius.

Speaker 1

That's a huge difference.

Speaker 1

How could the atmosphere around something be hotter than the thing below?

Speaker 0

Kinda looks like the waves when you're at a beach, how they just roll and roll and roll.

Speaker 1

The swirling surface of the sun might be the answer.

Speaker 1

Scientists think that the way that the surface swirls together might be adding some heat to the situation.

Speaker 1

When things swirl together on Earth, it's usually because the fluids are different temperatures or going different speeds.

Speaker 1

But on the sun, the moving bits have different rates of magnetism, and so the magnetic field is whirling around too.

Speaker 1

Maybe that's what's making the corona so hot.

Speaker 2

Because they're trying to figure out how hot it is and make find more about it.

Speaker 2

I have no words for this.

Speaker 1

If you'd like to see some close-up pics of the sun, ask your grown ups to head to the News Time page on the ABC Kids Listen website.

Speaker 1

It's the safest way to see the sun sizzle free.

Speaker 2

Oh, hey, Emily.

Speaker 2

Can I have another story, please?

Speaker 1

A new art exhibition in South Australia has been created by an artist named Alice Lindstrom with the help of about 400 children.

Speaker 0

I think that's a lot of children.

Speaker 0

A lot.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Imagine getting 400 of your school friends to work together on something.

Speaker 1

Alice Lindstrom worked with the children from South Australia to create an installation.

Speaker 1

That's the sort of artwork that you can walk around and look at, an artwork that takes up an entire room or maybe even more.

Speaker 1

Working together, Alice and the children created a garden of imagination full of flowers, birds, insects, trees, and more.

Speaker 2

It kinda looks like something that you drew that you drew if you were drawing, like, prophecies in the olden days.

Speaker 0

It looks majestic.

Speaker 0

It looks

Speaker 2

like something straight out of a stop motion movie.

Speaker 1

The artwork is called a world that grows, and it's a lovely example of what can happen when people work together.

Speaker 1

Alice the artist held lots of workshops with children, encouraging them to play with different colors and patterns and shapes to make their artworks.

Speaker 1

Alice then had the big job of bringing all the different pieces together.

Speaker 2

I think they feel proud of their work and how much they worked hard at that.

Speaker 2

The children probably feel excited seeing an artwork they all made in a single area.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And even though Alice is the professional artist, her work wouldn't exist without the creativity of all those kids.

Speaker 2

It shows us that if we work together, we can make something beautiful and show the community what they're made of.

Speaker 0

It shows us that if we work together, we work better and everything will turn out better than if you work alone.

Speaker 2

You don't just need to be one person in one world doing one thing on your own.

Speaker 2

You need a group to help you go on your journey in life.

Speaker 1

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Speaker 0

Wow of the week.

Speaker 0

This story made me go wow because now scientists know more about this extinct animal.

Speaker 0

And isn't that cool?

Speaker 0

Like, maybe they find all the bones and then make a new version of it or something.

Speaker 1

The territory tiger is a relative of the Tasmanian tiger, also known as the Thylacine.

Speaker 2

What's a Thylacine?

Speaker 1

The Thylacine is an extinct species of carnivorous marsupial, and they lived in Central Australia millions of years ago.

Speaker 1

They had sharp teeth that could munch through bones and sharp claws too.

Speaker 1

Back then, the Red Sandy Desert was home to flightless giant birds, crocodiles, flamingos, and the Northern Territory's biggest species of thylacine, Thylacineus potens.

Speaker 2

Because people hunted them a long time ago because they thought they were bad, but they're actually not.

Speaker 1

They weren't hunted to extinction by humans.

Speaker 1

These animals disappeared long before humans were around.

Speaker 1

Scientists have found little bits of evidence for the animal in the Alcooter Fossil Beds, a big area in the middle of Australia that's full of fossils.

Speaker 1

These beds get explored once every two years by paleontologists lucky enough to make the trip over.

Speaker 1

This year, doctor Adam Yates made an extra exciting discovery, a beautifully preserved femur bone from a territory tiger.

Speaker 1

The femur is the thigh bone in your leg.

Speaker 1

This Thylacine thigh bone is the first complete limb bone that's ever been found of the species.

Speaker 2

It looks like obsidian, like when it's

Speaker 0

just been made.

Speaker 0

Kinda looks like when a dog chewed everywhere through the bone, and it's got nothing left on it.

Speaker 1

When doctor Adam was uncovering the bone, he was careful not to get too excited too soon.

Speaker 1

He didn't wanna get his hopes up.

Speaker 1

But as he carefully brushed away the dust, he realized he'd made an amazing discovery.

Speaker 2

I think it's because they wanted to find more about them, so they were happy they actually found a discovery like this.

Speaker 2

Super fantastic.

Speaker 2

It's super exciting.

Speaker 1

The discovery will help scientists better understand the size of this species of thylacine.

Speaker 1

They They can look at the femur bone too and then estimate how big all the other missing bones might be.

Speaker 1

And maybe those bones will be uncovered next time someone digs at the Al Qudah fossil beds.

Speaker 1

We'll just have to wait and see.

Speaker 1

好的。

Alrighty.

Speaker 1

I hope you've been listening very carefully because it's time for today's quiz.

Speaker 1

Question one.

Speaker 1

What's hotter?

Speaker 1

The surface of the sun or the corona, its atmosphere?

Speaker 1

The corona.

Speaker 1

Question two, how many children helped with the artwork?

Speaker 1

400个。

400.

Speaker 1

Question three, in which part of the body would you find the femur bone, The thigh or leg?

Speaker 1

And your new snoodler, can you think of an artwork that you could create with a big group of people like the one in South Australia?

Speaker 1

What would it be like?

Speaker 1

And done.

Speaker 1

How'd you go?

Speaker 1

Well, thanks for your help today, friends.

Speaker 2

Thanks, Emily.

Speaker 2

Bye, Emily.

Speaker 1

You're welcome.
