We're gonna see if your feet are still dirty.

Speaker 0

Are they dirty?

Speaker 0

No.

Speaker 0

They're clean.

Speaker 0

I can verify.

Speaker 0

Hey.

Speaker 0

BENNY sent me an early copy and I can honestly say the stories, the style, the language, this is not an ordinary book on failure.

Speaker 0

Please welcome back to On Purpose, my dear friend, BENNY BLANCO.

Speaker 0

BENNY, it is great to have you back.

Speaker 0

Hi.

Speaker 0

I knew you were gonna do that.

Speaker 1

Well, you know when people talk about you, it's...

Speaker 1

让人

Makes

Speaker 0

you Well, little I'm gonna talk about you some more.

Speaker 0

Listen to this.

Speaker 0

我们有《Love Yourself》、《Teenage Dream》、《California Girls》、《Moves Like Jagger》、《Diamonds》、《TikTok》、《Circus》、《Perfect》、《Lonely》。

So we got Love Yourself, Teenage Dream, California Girls, Moves Like Jagger, Diamonds, TikTok, Circus, Perfect, Lonely.

Speaker 0

好。

Okay.

Speaker 0

And that's just like naming

Speaker 1

好。

Okay.

Speaker 0

No like eight of No the incredible catalog and classics.

Speaker 0

太

Too

Speaker 1

much.

Speaker 1

You know, if I'm like out and like...

Speaker 1

And someone plays my music in public, there's nothing that makes me more nervous.

Speaker 0

Really?

Speaker 0

Which song makes you the most nervous?

Speaker 1

Any song.

Speaker 1

I get so nervous.

Speaker 1

Unless I'm at a concert and I'm watching one of the artists perform it and everyone's singing along.

Speaker 1

That's like my heaven.

Speaker 1

Or if I like drive by and I see like a mother daughter like singing it back and forth, that's cool to me too.

Speaker 1

Or like some of my emotional songs when someone's singing it like to themselves in a car, that's the best.

Speaker 1

But not the...

Speaker 0

So we should have had it playing when you walked in today.

Speaker 1

I have laughed.

Speaker 0

Next time I'm gonna make a BENNY playlist and play it when you come over.

Speaker 1

No, that's like my Don't least do it.

Speaker 0

BENNY, you start this book by asking people to repeat, I am a failure, And I loved it.

Speaker 0

Why?

Speaker 0

Tell us why that's important is for us to start by saying I am a failure.

Speaker 1

Because we're all failures.

Speaker 1

We failed.

Speaker 1

You failed.

Speaker 1

I fail every day.

Speaker 1

I fail constantly.

Speaker 1

Everyone's always remembering you by your successes.

Speaker 1

Nobody nobody's sitting there like, hey, remember that one time when you tried to do that thing and it didn't work?

Speaker 1

No one says that.

Speaker 1

And if they do, they're an asshole and they shouldn't be your friend.

Speaker 1

I wanted to make sure that, you know, the word has such a negative connotation behind it.

Speaker 1

Like failure, failure.

Speaker 1

You've been told your whole life, don't fail.

Speaker 1

You don't wanna fail.

Speaker 1

Like, you gotta be a success story.

Speaker 1

But you can't be a success story without having all these failures who make you who you are and that you learn from and learn what to do differently.

Speaker 1

Like failure only sucks if you don't learn from what you failed

Speaker 0

对。

at.

Speaker 0

The reason why I liked it when I was reading it was I was thinking the more I realize that I wanna be good at failure, the more likely I am to become successful.

Speaker 1

当然。

Of course.

Speaker 1

It's like people are afraid to fail.

Speaker 1

You know, I look at it like I wanna have amnesia to failure.

Speaker 1

One of my friends, he said, I don't know how you do this.

Speaker 1

You'll say that this thing's gonna be the biggest in the world.

Speaker 1

It's gonna be the best in the world.

Speaker 1

It's gonna be awesome.

Speaker 1

And sometimes I'm right, and sometimes I'm wrong, and it like completely fails.

Speaker 1

But the next day I wake up and I'm like, alright, what are we doing today boys?

Speaker 1

Because I do have that amnesia to failure.

Speaker 1

It's just like, okay, I messed up.

Speaker 1

What am I gonna do?

Speaker 1

Sit here and cry about it for the next like six years?

Speaker 1

不。

No.

Speaker 1

I'm gonna get up and I'm gonna be like, okay, that didn't work.

Speaker 1

Let me try this little adjustment and do it again.

Speaker 1

Speaker 0

What do you think people are more scared of?

Speaker 0

Failure or embarrassment?

Speaker 0

Embarrassment.

Speaker 1

I think people are so scared to be embarrassed in front of their peers.

Speaker 1

我?

Me?

Speaker 1

Couldn't care less.

Speaker 1

Couldn't care less.

Speaker 1

Because my friends who are all doing really well, get that you fail.

Speaker 1

Only people who aren't doing that well didn't fail.

Speaker 1

Because, yeah, if you don't take any chances, you're not gonna fail.

Speaker 1

I rather swing and strike the fuck out so many times.

Speaker 1

I rather do it because what am I gonna do?

Speaker 1

Just like be safe my whole life?

Speaker 1

I would never have done what I've done today if I didn't take those like big, big swings.

Speaker 1

And I urge everyone to do it because nothing bad is gonna happen.

Speaker 1

Maybe you like, your face gets a little bit red and a few of your friends are like, man, I thought that thing was gonna be big.

Speaker 1

But that's the worst that's gonna happen.

Speaker 0

You're reminding me, I always think of this that all my friends that are doing well, if they send me a video or a clip, it will always be, look how awesome this is.

Speaker 0

And any of my friends who are struggling, they'll always send me a clip saying, let's laugh at this.

Speaker 0

It's almost like they're sending you something where you're laughing at someone else failing.

Speaker 0

Whereas your friends that are winning are only sending you things that people win.

Speaker 0

And it's really interesting where you start to see like winners are watching winners.

Speaker 0

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 0

Losers are watching losers.

Speaker 1

Oh my god.

Speaker 0

And what you're obsessed with is is what you're gonna repeat.

Speaker 0

Talk to me about what was the first thing you ever failed at?

Speaker 0

Do you remember?

Speaker 0

Growing up,

Speaker 1

my brother was like the golden child.

Speaker 1

He was just the best at everything.

Speaker 1

He was the best tennis player, the best basketball player, homecoming king, valedictorian.

Speaker 1

Like, every single thing you could be good at, he was good at.

Speaker 1

He connected with my dad.

Speaker 1

And like, before my parents split up and stuff, I think he connected with my dad in such a like special bonding way.

Speaker 1

And I think maybe I failed at having that relationship with my dad because I wasn't good enough at that, the stuff that my brother was, and I wasn't, we weren't interested in the same things.

Speaker 1

So I think like that was like, I don't even know if it's a failure, but that was like the first thing where I was like, And I I I just wanted to be as good in that moment.

Speaker 1

It was hard for everyone around me to understand what I was doing because we didn't come from a place where people were doing this.

Speaker 1

We didn't have a gajillion dollars to throw at my talents.

Speaker 1

I was doing it in Virginia.

Speaker 1

There wasn't there wasn't like a a huge, like, bustling music scene at the...

Speaker 1

At where I was living at the time.

Speaker 1

And it seemed like such a pipe dream to everyone.

Speaker 1

So I think maybe that was my first failure.

Speaker 0

I mean, that's a big one to pull out.

Speaker 0

Like, you know, I I appreciate you going there because I'm like, feeling like you failed at building a relationship with your dad.

Speaker 0

How did you even process that at the time?

Speaker 0

Because that, as a child, I mean, even as an adult, that's heavy.

Speaker 0

But as a child, that's that's tough.

Speaker 1

I don't think I realized it until writing this book because I was trying to think of all the failures in my life.

Speaker 1

And me and my dad have a great relationship.

Speaker 1

I let my parents, in different ways, down so much because I wasn't focused on traditional routes.

Speaker 1

I didn't wanna go to college.

Speaker 1

I didn't wanna finish high school.

Speaker 1

I didn't wanna, I felt like my education was holding me back from my education on what I wanted to do in music.

Speaker 1

I think it's scary to be a parent and have like a super creative child that's not into the traditional route.

Speaker 1

Like I didn't wanna be a doctor.

Speaker 1

I didn't wanna be a lawyer.

Speaker 1

I wanted to make music and write songs and sing them and do everything I could.

Speaker 1

I was like bursting with creative energy.

Speaker 1

And I think that's tough and scary for a parent.

Speaker 1

And I would urge every parent to let your kid explore.

Speaker 1

Let your kid like play in a creative sandbox.

Speaker 1

And if it doesn't work out, they can always figure it out later.

Speaker 1

You know, they're 15, 16, 17, 18 years old.

Speaker 1

Like, life is long.

Speaker 1

You know, my mom, I remember when I made it, she told me it was such an incredible feeling for her because she never got to pursue any of the things she wanted to because she was scared.

Speaker 1

And I talk about it in this book, she was so scared.

Speaker 1

Because she was taught that you go to school, you go and you get your college degree, you get a job, you do the...

Speaker 1

Like, and that's a safe route.

Speaker 1

She was a painter.

Speaker 1

She wanted to paint.

Speaker 1

Her parents won letter.

Speaker 1

And I think when I got to do it, it gave her like this sense of like, oh my god, anything's possible.

Speaker 1

And it and and it is.

Speaker 1

Like, I'm sure when you were doing what you're doing, your parents are like, what the fuck?

Speaker 1

He's talking in front of like a microphone.

Speaker 1

Who's gonna listen to this?

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 0

What did she say to you in that interaction?

Speaker 1

She was so proud of me and that she wishes she were as brave as I was when she was younger.

Speaker 1

But she wasn't.

Speaker 1

She said it was just...

Speaker 1

She was like, it was a different time.

Speaker 1

There wasn't any of it.

Speaker 1

Like, everything seemed so far away.

Speaker 1

Dreams seemed so far.

Speaker 0

That's beautiful, man.

Speaker 0

Where were you?

Speaker 0

When you said, because you said when I made it.

Speaker 0

What do you define as when you made it?

Speaker 1

It's so funny.

Speaker 1

It's it's always such arbitrary things.

Speaker 1

Like, I think I was in like the New York Times, like way after, it was like way after I was successful.

Speaker 1

She was like, wow, you really did make it.

Speaker 1

I remember I had like a number one song, and I like, mom, my song went number one.

Speaker 1

She was like, no, it didn't.

Speaker 1

And I was like, I swear.

Speaker 1

And she would ask me like, what's your backup plan?

Speaker 0

And what would you say?

Speaker 1

I was like, mom, what do you mean?

Speaker 1

What's my backup plan?

Speaker 1

Like, I'm I'm making...

Speaker 1

I just worked with Britney Spears.

Speaker 1

Like, and she's like, yeah, but like this can't last forever.

Speaker 1

Because nobody knew.

Speaker 1

They didn't know I was gonna become what I became.

Speaker 0

How did you deal with the discomfort of people around you not understanding your dream or not believing it was possible?

Speaker 0

Because I think that's the hardest part about failing is no one around you gets you, no one around you understands it, and no one around you believes it's actually gonna be real.

Speaker 0

How did you live through that discomfort in the early days when it wasn't proven?

Speaker 0

Tunnel vision.

Speaker 1

It was all, if you weren't with the program, I'm moving.

Speaker 1

You can either get on this train that's moving, it's already moving.

Speaker 1

We're already...

Speaker 1

There's so much momentum.

Speaker 1

You can't hold back the train.

Speaker 1

You think you're gonna hold back the train?

Speaker 1

Like, you're not strong enough to do that.

Speaker 1

Like, any noise from someone else, it's you're either with the program or we're leaving you behind.

Speaker 1

Sorry.

Speaker 1

That's how I looked at it.

Speaker 1

That's how I looked at everything.

Speaker 1

No one was going to stop what I knew was in me.

Speaker 0

How do you think people can find that?

Speaker 0

Like, what are you telling people in the book to do to find that tunnel vision?

Speaker 0

Because I think we get distracted by like the comments section and the opinions.

Speaker 0

当然。

Of course.

Speaker 0

And now, because now it's not just your friends and family who don't believe in you.

Speaker 0

You upload something, it's the person in the comments section who doesn't believe in you.

Speaker 1

You can't believe any person who's never met you.

Speaker 1

Like a person who's a person who's writing a comment about you that hasn't met you, instant.

Speaker 1

Next.

Speaker 1

好。

Okay.

Speaker 1

Number two, hating is free.

Speaker 1

Someone can be in their basement upset with something.

Speaker 1

It's like what you were saying with your friends sending you like things, making fun of stuff.

Speaker 1

Like, it's easy.

Speaker 1

That's like low hanging fruit to make fun of someone.

Speaker 1

I don't even understand how a person could do it.

Speaker 1

I have never in my entire life gone onto someone's page and wrote something negative.

Speaker 1

Like in my entire life.

Speaker 1

Like that means you went to someone's page, you watched it.

Speaker 1

You clicked a second button to go to the comment section.

Speaker 1

You wrote out a thing, probably erased it, and then wrote it a few other times.

Speaker 1

And then you clicked it again.

Speaker 1

So you had so many choices you had to make to write a shitty comment about someone.

Speaker 1

How does that reflect on you?

Speaker 1

就像……

Like how...

Speaker 1

What's so bad in your life that you have to do that to someone else?

Speaker 1

You have to put someone down to make yourself feel good enough to like make it through the day?

Speaker 1

I don't understand that.

Speaker 1

So, don't listen to any of the comments.

Speaker 1

The only time is if like one of my friends was like, hey, I don't like this thing.

Speaker 1

Then I'm like, what?

Speaker 1

You know what I mean?

Speaker 1

We're not listening to the comments.

Speaker 1

That's number one.

Speaker 1

Number two, you're gonna know when you have this passion for something.

Speaker 1

You're not just gonna be like, oh, I wonder if I have this passion.

Speaker 1

不是。

No.

Speaker 1

It's gonna be like an itch that you have to scratch.

Speaker 1

And, you know, a lot of people, they get that itch and they go...

Speaker 1

And then they just don't do it because they're told their whole life.

Speaker 1

But you don't have to do that.

Speaker 1

Scratch that itch.

Speaker 1

Try it.

Speaker 1

Try it.

Speaker 1

Try to something that makes you excited.

Speaker 1

Maybe you do it and you're like not that great at it.

Speaker 1

Like, where I started from is not where I ended.

Speaker 1

Okay?

Speaker 1

I just got on the horse and started galloping.

Speaker 1

At first I thought I was gonna be the biggest rapper in the entire world.

Speaker 1

I didn't land there, but I landed somewhere pretty cool.

Speaker 1

I'm making...

Speaker 1

I'm in the same realm.

Speaker 1

That's what I'm saying.

Speaker 1

So like, let's say you wanna be a professional basketball player, but you're five, six, and you're a little chubby.

Speaker 1

Maybe try to be the professional basketball player.

Speaker 1

When you don't make it, you land coaching a team or something, or you land like being a physical therapist.

Speaker 1

That's all I'm saying.

Speaker 1

Just start.

Speaker 1

Just start.

Speaker 1

It doesn't matter where you end up.

Speaker 1

Just start doing something.

Speaker 1

You gotta start the train.

Speaker 1

Okay?

Speaker 1

Because once the train's moving, you're gonna go somewhere.

Speaker 1

You need to start the momentum.

Speaker 1

Just start with anything that excites you and just follow it.

Speaker 1

Like, I'm sure you did not end up exactly where you thought

Speaker 0

you were.

Speaker 0

You know I had the same dream.

Speaker 0

Really?

Speaker 0

You know I thought I was gonna be the biggest rapper in the world.

Speaker 0

Really?

Speaker 0

That's the funniest thing about hearing that from you.

Speaker 0

I'm like, I knew that about you, obviously.

Speaker 0

But, yeah, I wasn't ever I wasn't ever gonna get close.

Speaker 1

So many people, you do something, and then you pivot.

Speaker 1

But I feel like momentum is the thing you just need.

Speaker 1

You just gotta keep the momentum going.

Speaker 1

If it's this, you try that.

Speaker 1

It doesn't work, move on to this.

Speaker 1

I feel like that is is another big thing for starting to find that within you.

Speaker 1

And then I think a really important thing is in order to be successful, I call it the stool.

Speaker 1

Okay?

Speaker 1

So you have this stool.

Speaker 1

Your life's up top.

Speaker 1

Okay?

Speaker 1

This is your life.

Speaker 1

It's the top of the seat.

Speaker 1

And then you have, you know, three, four legs.

Speaker 1

What are the three most important things in your life?

Speaker 1

What would you say?

Speaker 0

I I've read the books.

Speaker 0

I don't wanna give the

Speaker 1

答案。对。

answers Yeah.

Speaker 1

To Most people say career.

Speaker 1

Some form of career, making money, however, whatever it is.

Speaker 1

Most people say their family or their loved ones or their wife or their husband, whatever it is.

Speaker 1

And then most people say something to do with their health.

Speaker 1

Those are like three pretty standard pillars of of what's important.

Speaker 0

同意。

Agree.

Speaker 1

So you have those three things.

Speaker 1

You have your life on top.

Speaker 1

Okay?

Speaker 1

If one of those three legs is like leaning more, your table's gonna topple over.

Speaker 1

Your life's gonna topple over.

Speaker 1

So you have to make sure you're putting enough energy into all three things.

Speaker 1

Because a lot of people, what they do is they start focusing on the success.

Speaker 1

They start focusing on the journey.

Speaker 1

Then they make it to the top of the mountain, and everything else is fucking gone.

Speaker 1

They don't have a family.

Speaker 1

Their health is in shambles because they've been working so hard.

Speaker 1

They've neglected it.

Speaker 1

They're like, they have heart disease.

Speaker 1

They have this.

Speaker 1

They have that.

Speaker 1

They have anxiety.

Speaker 1

I think if you focus on building all of those simultaneously, you don't leave one out, then that's where the true success comes.

Speaker 1

And that's how you draw from the inspiration.

Speaker 1

And and for me, it's like I always make sure, like I'm making sure I'm putting a good meal in my body.

Speaker 1

I'm making sure, for me, like, the thing that keeps me sane is, like, walking.

Speaker 1

I'm walking, like, 20,000 steps a day.

Speaker 1

Really?

Speaker 1

You live in California and you live in LA, you've probably seen me walking down the street.

Speaker 1

Like, it's just I I walk.

Speaker 1

I walk.

Speaker 1

And and then no matter what, I spend time with my family.

Speaker 1

I spend time with my wife.

Speaker 1

I spend time with Selena.

Speaker 1

Like, it's like the thing is we both work.

Speaker 1

We're both chasing our dreams so hard.

Speaker 1

We're we're both always trying to, you know, one up ourselves.

Speaker 1

And the thing that's crazy is it's so cool to be in a relationship with someone who is so prolific and so successful.

Speaker 1

Because I look at her and I'm like her biggest cheerleader.

Speaker 1

I got pom poms on.

Speaker 1

And at the same time, I'm like, shit.

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 1

I need to be doing more.

Speaker 1

And we're both like that.

Speaker 1

And it's and it's cool because we're fueling each other's fire.

Speaker 1

We're the wood for each other's fire.

Speaker 1

And we always make sure, like every week, gotta have a date night.

Speaker 1

Every week, the end of the day, have to check-in with each other.

Speaker 1

Have those talks.

Speaker 1

Be like, how was your day?

Speaker 1

And listen.

Speaker 1

We're actually listening to each other's lives.

Speaker 1

Maybe Selena's like, hey, I could really use two dates this week.

Speaker 1

Like, I'm I'm...

Speaker 1

Or I could say, hey, I'm super stressed.

Speaker 1

Like, can you like scratch my head tonight?

Speaker 1

And that's just as important as being in there, putting in the work, trying to get to where you are.

Speaker 1

It's so important to water all your plants.

Speaker 1

It's so important.

Speaker 1

As important as grinding it out and not listening to haters is watering the plants.

Speaker 1

You know, I go with my mom to the farmers market every single weekend.

Speaker 1

I cook her lunch after...

Speaker 1

Because these are the things that fill you up.

Speaker 1

You gotta fill your cup up.

Speaker 0

How have you failed as a husband?

Speaker 1

Selena was directing her first show.

Speaker 1

And we didn't know when it was gonna happen.

Speaker 1

And I was planning on trying to get there one of the days.

Speaker 1

And I couldn't get there because I was so booked up.

Speaker 1

I was giving her all the inspiration, talking to her, listening when she got home, but like I couldn't get there.

Speaker 1

And I wish I could have been able to get there one of the days.

Speaker 1

That was one thing.

Speaker 1

And then here's where I think I've failed her that I'm I'm working on.

Speaker 1

I don't like to fly.

Speaker 1

And I always come and see her and do whenever she's...

Speaker 1

Whatever she's doing.

Speaker 1

But it takes me so long to get there.

Speaker 1

And it's like such a process.

Speaker 1

And I'm really, really working on myself to try to be able to get there quicker.

Speaker 1

That's where I know I've failed in our relationship.

Speaker 1

Where I'm actively trying my hardest to overcome that.

Speaker 1

And I haven't done it yet.

Speaker 1

I've failed at that.

Speaker 1

But I'm getting closer every day.

Speaker 1

I got on a plane recently, and she's the only reason I've been able, I haven't flown in eight years.

Speaker 1

Talk to us about that phobia.

Speaker 1

为什么

Why does

Speaker 0

it exist?

Speaker 0

Where did it come from?

Speaker 1

I think it's control.

Speaker 1

And I had a bad flight, then had a few, and then, you know.

Speaker 1

And I fly occasionally, but I haven't flown in eight years.

Speaker 1

And trying to get better for her, and for this book.

Speaker 1

This book helped me fly.

Speaker 1

I said, how could I go on and be selling everyone on a book on failures when I failed at something and I haven't done it?

Speaker 1

I haven't done it.

Speaker 1

So I woke up one morning and I said, I'm getting on a plane.

Speaker 1

I can't...

Speaker 1

Even if it's one time, I have to inch my way closer.

Speaker 1

And I got on a plane and I was scared shitless.

Speaker 1

But I did it because in the back of my head, I was thinking, I can't lie to these people, one.

Speaker 1

And two, I gotta be a fucking better husband.

Speaker 1

Gotta be a better husband.

Speaker 1

It was like an hour and change fight.

Speaker 0

So that's good.

Speaker 0

You you tested the waters.

Speaker 0

It wasn't like, I'm gonna take like a ten

Speaker 1

hour No.

Speaker 1

不是。

No.

Speaker 1

It was like hour...

Speaker 1

It was domestic.

Speaker 0

It's like to Vegas or to

Speaker 1

like Yeah.

Speaker 0

Arizona or something.

Speaker 1

I wanted to get off before I got on.

Speaker 1

And I just I had just told myself, was like, I can't.

Speaker 1

I gotta get a little bit further.

Speaker 1

I gotta get just a little bit closer.

Speaker 1

And I wasn't trying to I wasn't trying to, like, conquer it all that day.

Speaker 1

I said, just get on this one flight.

Speaker 1

Just get on this one flight.

Speaker 1

And that's what I kept telling myself.

Speaker 1

And I got on.

Speaker 1

And I was scared, but I made it.

Speaker 1

I remember I called Celine after.

Speaker 1

I was like, I did the flight.

Speaker 1

She's like, are you ready to fly tomorrow?

Speaker 1

And then I was like, not yet.

Speaker 1

But I'm but I'm on my way.

Speaker 0

There's so much to that in this whole idea of F failure because it's like, you started small, you did a flight that was one hour away.

Speaker 0

You said, just take this one flight, just post that one video, take that one step, make that one song, like just start with one.

Speaker 0

And then the idea that it's not that it suddenly took away all your fear and suddenly took away all your insecurity, it just...

Speaker 0

It got you one step closer.

Speaker 1

It got me closer.

Speaker 1

It got me close.

Speaker 1

And you don't have to don't have to climb the mountain in one day.

Speaker 1

A lot of people get overwhelmed with all the tasks in front of them.

Speaker 1

That's what I notice the most with people.

Speaker 1

They get overwhelmed with, okay, so I wanna start a podcast.

Speaker 1

Well, if I start a podcast, I need to get the cameras.

Speaker 1

And then if I get the cameras, need to get the microphones.

Speaker 1

And then I need to find guests.

Speaker 1

And then who are the guests gonna...

Speaker 1

I think just like focus on one part at a time.

Speaker 1

I never try to do too much at once.

Speaker 1

I had to turn down so many projects as a songwriter and producer where, like, the four year old me would be, like, crying that I had to do this.

Speaker 1

But I knew if I spread myself too thin, I wouldn't be able to focus on what was important.

Speaker 1

And I like to be laser focused on like one thing at a time.

Speaker 1

Everyone wants to build the house in a day.

Speaker 1

Oh, you gotta...

Speaker 1

Let's start with the foundation.

Speaker 1

Oh, then like, let's like put the gravel in.

Speaker 1

Oh, let's put...

Speaker 1

You know what I mean?

Speaker 1

I think it takes time.

Speaker 1

And people wanna be a success story overnight.

Speaker 1

And I think Instagram, Twitter, or X, whatever it's called, TikTok made people wanna accelerate so much.

Speaker 1

And to me, you know, you see someone's, now you just click a button and you see someone's success, it's already done.

Speaker 1

And people get jealous, and they say, well I want to be famous.

Speaker 1

Like, when I was younger, nobody just said I want to be famous.

Speaker 1

Like that wasn't a thing.

Speaker 1

You wouldn't just say like, oh, I wanna be famous.

Speaker 1

People had a goal.

Speaker 1

I wanted to be the best soccer player in the world.

Speaker 1

I wanna be the best basketball player in the world.

Speaker 1

I wanna be the best rights activist in the world.

Speaker 1

I wanted to be this.

Speaker 1

And I think people need to find a passion.

Speaker 0

You tell some amazing stories of some people who are now famous in the book.

Speaker 0

I wanted you to tell the Bruno Mars story because I thought that was incredible to read that he used to be an Elvis impersonator.

Speaker 0

And I was like, I didn't even know that.

Speaker 1

When he was a kid, was an Elvis impersonator.

Speaker 1

I remember the first time I worked with Bruno.

Speaker 1

I brought him to the studio, and he wasn't known yet.

Speaker 1

This was years before he was known.

Speaker 1

He gets in the studio, he writes his song, his harmonies, everything.

Speaker 1

It was so unbelievable to watch.

Speaker 1

I remember being like, oh my god, this guy's insane.

Speaker 1

This is the crazy part about Bruno.

Speaker 1

He was signed to a record deal, and he got dropped.

Speaker 1

Then he had to start again.

Speaker 1

He's writing songs for people, doing anything he could.

Speaker 1

And he wrote a bunch of songs that people started recording.

Speaker 1

He did Billionaire for Travie McCoy.

Speaker 1

他给BOB写了《Nothing on You》。

He did Nothing on You for BOB.

Speaker 1

He was the demo vocalist on the chorus.

Speaker 1

And they were trying to get all these big people to be the feature and take him off because he wasn't an artist yet.

Speaker 1

And he was so good that one of my friends who signed him, this guy named Aaron Bayshak, he was like, we gotta keep this guy on the records.

Speaker 1

Like, we have to put this guy on the song.

Speaker 1

And everyone's like, no, no.

Speaker 1

He's no name.

Speaker 1

不行。

No.

Speaker 1

It'll never sell.

Speaker 1

And they couldn't find anyone who could sing the demo as good as him.

Speaker 1

And then he gets on the record.

Speaker 1

《Nothing on You》成了冠军单曲。

Nothing on You becomes a number one song.

Speaker 1

I remember he...

Speaker 1

I was working with him right right after that song first happened.

Speaker 1

And he said, somebody noticed me in the airport.

Speaker 1

He goes, I'm gonna be fucking huge.

Speaker 1

I remember you saying...

Speaker 1

You know what?

Speaker 1

The funniest part was, it was right when Mike Posner was really big with the song Cooler Than Me.

Speaker 1

And I was showing him, we were in the studio and I was showing him clips of Mike Posner performing at like a sold out college.

Speaker 1

I remember we were walking around and we like got food.

Speaker 1

He was like, man, one day I'm not even gonna be able to walk through the streets like this.

Speaker 1

And he had that drive, and he kept failing.

Speaker 1

He failed so many times, and nobody believed in him.

Speaker 1

And, you know, signed, he's dropped, he's trying to place his songs.

Speaker 1

He's getting kicked off the song.

Speaker 1

They putting him back on because they got no other choice.

Speaker 1

And his sheer talent mixed with will and fight and drive made him who he is today.

Speaker 1

He works harder than any person I know.

Speaker 1

He will work on a song for three years straight, changing the production.

Speaker 1

Really?

Speaker 1

New production.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

There is nobody in the world that that works on their music as hard as he does.

Speaker 1

He's the hardest working man in show business.

Speaker 0

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 0

That's a big statement.

Speaker 0

Anybody who's ever worked

Speaker 1

with him or who knows him would echo my sentiment from the top of a mountain.

Speaker 1

The reason he is where he is today is because of his work, his ethic, his amnesia to failure, and his sheer willingness to dust himself off and try again over and over again.

Speaker 1

And he also happens to be the most talented singer in the world.

Speaker 1

So that doesn't hurt either.

Speaker 0

I've seen him perform live a few times.

Speaker 0

He's unbelievable.

Speaker 0

He's unbelievable.

Speaker 0

So good.

Speaker 0

The reason why I asked you about how have you failed as a husband was because there's a story in the book that you tell.

Speaker 0

And the reason why I loved it so much is because I think when we watch people like you or you watch people like Bruno Mars or you watch people like Salino, whoever it may be, you think you have to try and be like them.

Speaker 0

And in the book, have this great story where you say to Ed, you're like, Ed, tell me about what's happening in your life.

Speaker 0

Like, don't try and write about someone else's life or something that feels right.

Speaker 0

Most of us fail because we're trying to be good at being someone else rather than starting as just being the bad version of ourself.

Speaker 0

If you started as the bad version of yourself, you'll become a phenomenal version of yourself.

Speaker 0

But if you start as a bad version of someone else, you're not going anywhere.

Speaker 1

My friend said something that always stuck with me.

Speaker 1

They said, be yourself because everyone else is taken.

Speaker 1

And I love that.

Speaker 1

Just be original, be you.

Speaker 1

It's okay.

Speaker 1

Look at me.

Speaker 1

Like like, I am like the antithesis of like, what I became and what I'm supposed to be, and I always am just true to myself.

Speaker 1

And I was with Ed Sheeran, and we had just finished a show in Toronto.

Speaker 1

And we went to this like Drake...

Speaker 1

It was when Drake and Future put out that album together.

Speaker 1

We went to like the after party and it was like so cool.

Speaker 1

We're like having the time of our lives.

Speaker 1

We leave.

Speaker 1

We get on the bus.

Speaker 1

And the way it works is when you're on tour and you're going back to America, what they do is they wake you back up at the border patrol.

Speaker 1

We said, I don't wanna have to get woken up and then go to sleep again.

Speaker 1

Let's write a song.

Speaker 1

好。

Okay.

Speaker 1

And this is all on film.

Speaker 1

You can see this.

Speaker 1

This was documented in a documentary.

Speaker 1

We start writing a song, and Ed's writing it about like being in love with like an older woman that's like his next door neighbor.

Speaker 1

And he was like kinda copying The Graduate, the movie.

Speaker 1

I was like, Ed, I don't wanna write about this.

Speaker 1

What's going on in your life?

Speaker 1

What's going on right now?

Speaker 1

He was like, I don't wanna write a song about that person, because then I'm like giving them the satisfaction that I know they don't deserve.

Speaker 1

And it was about an ex.

Speaker 1

I said, well why don't we write a song about you not wanting to write a song about it?

Speaker 1

And he looked at me like I was crazy.

Speaker 1

The first thing he said was, I don't wanna write a song because I don't want anyone to think that I care, because I don't.

Speaker 1

That became one of the most important lyrics in Love Yourself, which became a Justin Bieber song.

Speaker 1

In that moment, him just letting go of everything, and not worrying about it, and just like speaking from his heart, and being his true self, is what inspired that song.

Speaker 1

That's why so many people connect to that song, because it's that true feeling that people have.

Speaker 1

I think that's why people connect to music in general because if you're having an experience, somebody else is having that same experience somewhere.

Speaker 1

And I think it just goes back to how you should always just be yourself.

Speaker 1

Don't try to be somebody else you're not because it's not gonna be you.

Speaker 1

So you're...

Speaker 1

And you can't keep it up forever.

Speaker 1

You can't keep up a facade forever.

Speaker 1

So just be yourself.

Speaker 1

Be yourself and people can take you as you are.

Speaker 1

And if they...

Speaker 1

If you fail, you fail.

Speaker 1

If you succeed, you succeed, and you keep moving.

Speaker 0

The reason why I love that, and I'm so glad you shared it, and I just want everyone to know when you get this book, this book is filled with story after story, page after page.

Speaker 0

Like the amount of awesome stories you have is unbelievable.

Speaker 0

Like when I was reading the book, was like, oh my god, there was this song and this and this person.

Speaker 0

Like it's unbelievable.

Speaker 0

But the reason why I asked you that is because there's so much failure in it.

Speaker 0

So first of all, Ed's gone through a breakup, which is a sort of failure.

Speaker 0

对。

Yep.

Speaker 0

Then he's trying to write a song that isn't really him, which is a sort of failure.

Speaker 0

And then you say to him, well, write from your own experience.

Speaker 0

And then all of a sudden it hits and I go, that's what we're all getting wrong.

Speaker 0

Like, we're scared to put out that video on Instagram or TikTok, or we're scared to write the book that really is what we care about, or we're scared to start a company based on what we actually need when that's the thing people are gonna resonate with.

Speaker 0

People just wanna You'll

Speaker 1

fit fit Yeah.

Speaker 1

You know what's crazy?

Speaker 1

Also, the chorus to that song used to be, you should go and fuck yourself.

Speaker 1

Okay?

Speaker 1

And I said to him, I don't want it to be fuck yourself because in sixty years, are people gonna wanna be singing that?

Speaker 1

Like, does that sound like a classic to you?

Speaker 1

I said, if we do something else, let's give people the same message, but be a little bit more thoughtful.

Speaker 1

And I'm all for using fuck.

Speaker 1

And I'm all for using stuff, using profanities, but when it makes sense, I didn't think we needed in that moment because I thought we could get the same sentiment in a more clever way.

Speaker 1

So then we failed again.

Speaker 1

Then it took us sending it to Justin and then having him record it.

Speaker 1

And then it saw the light of day and then it was the number one song.

Speaker 1

And there were so many times where that idea could have stopped.

Speaker 1

Okay?

Speaker 1

Failure, embarrassment, all of those things could have stopped this idea from happening.

Speaker 1

But we kept pushing through, and we kept the freight train going, and we kept that undeniable belief in ourselves.

Speaker 1

That's what people need in themselves.

Speaker 1

You need to believe.

Speaker 1

Just believe that it's all gonna happen.

Speaker 1

It's all gonna work out somehow.

Speaker 1

Somehow.

Speaker 1

I always talk to my friend about this, where we'll be like in a world where it's never, there's no finish line in sight.

Speaker 1

We have no idea how we're gonna get there.

Speaker 1

But I always say, I trust that it's all gonna work out because it usually does.

Speaker 1

It's either gonna work out in the sense that you'll get to that finish line and it'll be exactly how you want, and it'll be well received, and people will love it, and you'll love it.

Speaker 1

Or you'll get to that finish line, you'll do it, and you'll say, shit, this didn't work out how we wanted it to.

Speaker 1

Let's go back and look at where we made our mistakes and not make the same ones the next time.

Speaker 1

Still a success

Speaker 0

to me.

Speaker 0

Yeah, you just reminded me of two things.

Speaker 0

One thing I say is, you'll get to where you want in life, just not in the way you imagined it.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

Because I've always got to where I want in life, just not the path or the road that I thought my life was gonna take.

Speaker 0

One of my favorite quotes from John Lennon is he said, Everything will work out in the end, And if it hasn't worked out, it's not the end.

Speaker 0

And I and I love that because it just makes you realize that you're gonna find another way, another door, another pivot.

Speaker 0

And why I brought this story up is because even for you, when you first started making music, people compared you and said your work sounded like Timberland and Farell.

Speaker 0

So it's not even you telling Ed to sound like himself.

Speaker 0

People were telling you, what did you do when you heard that?

Speaker 0

I mean, first of all, it's a phenomenal compliment because we grew up on...

Speaker 0

Me and you're the same age.

Speaker 0

Like, Farell and Timberland were like

Speaker 1

I'm from Virginia.

Speaker 1

Unbelievable.

Speaker 1

Those guys were and are some of my favorite producers in the world.

Speaker 1

And I was copying them.

Speaker 1

I wasn't being myself.

Speaker 1

I wasn't being true to myself.

Speaker 1

I was trying to fit in, and I was trying to make something that would work musically, and that everyone would latch onto.

Speaker 1

And I remember I played that for an A and R who's now my manager and has been my manager the whole time.

Speaker 0

Talk about Andrew?

Speaker 0

Andrew.

Speaker 1

Andrew, shout out.

Speaker 1

I played it for him and he said, if I wanted a Timberland or Farell production, I would just go to them.

Speaker 1

I wanna know what a BENNY production sounds like.

Speaker 1

And then I remember I went back to the drawing board and I said, what does a BENNY production sound like?

Speaker 1

And I started making stuff, and it was really weird.

Speaker 1

It was really quirky.

Speaker 1

And at the beginning, nobody understood it.

Speaker 1

They didn't get it.

Speaker 1

I didn't get those like short term placements.

Speaker 1

But I created something that down the road, after many many failures and bumping my head against the wall, something clicked.

Speaker 1

And I became my own person.

Speaker 1

I became something unique.

Speaker 1

And people are always looking for something different and unique.

Speaker 1

The easy, they can slot in something like that's gonna work in the moment.

Speaker 1

But that's like low hanging fruit.

Speaker 1

You don't wanna be low hanging fruit.

Speaker 1

You want to be that diamond in the rough.

Speaker 1

You want to be that needle in the haystack.

Speaker 1

And to achieve that, you have to put yourself out there in ways that might, you know, show your bum for a little bit, you know.

Speaker 1

And it might be a little embarrassing.

Speaker 1

And it might not get the results or the response that you want right away.

Speaker 1

But if you're doing something that's special and you're not just following, then that's where you can get those explosive returns that you want.

Speaker 0

Have you ever embarrassed yourself really badly in front of a big manager, decision maker, artist?

Speaker 0

Can you tell us an example?

Speaker 1

You know, the first time I worked with SZA, I coulda gone in there, and I coulda played her beats that like some other guy could make way better than me.

Speaker 1

And tried to just get one on her project.

Speaker 1

But when I went in there, I wanted to hear her do a ballad because I knew...

Speaker 1

With guitar because I knew...

Speaker 1

I I hear her influences and I hear things that she hadn't totally done yet, but that she had done a little bit.

Speaker 1

Like, you know, she had made, you know, supermodel.

Speaker 1

She had done records that sounded like that a little.

Speaker 1

But I wanted to make something that I knew she was not only capable of, but could do better than other people that do in that other genre.

Speaker 1

I mean, SZA is a true, true leader.

Speaker 1

She is not afraid to fail.

Speaker 1

She will do stuff that's what she wants to do.

Speaker 1

If everyone's going left, she's going right.

Speaker 1

And that's what a great artist does.

Speaker 1

So I've played things for people that would embarrass the hell out of me.

Speaker 1

You know, and sometimes people are like, no, next.

Speaker 1

To Selena, I say what's on my mind.

Speaker 1

Whether it's not the cool macho thing to do, I say like, I miss you.

Speaker 1

Like, I really could use some extra cuddles or hugs right now.

Speaker 1

And maybe that doesn't make me sound like the coolest guy in the world.

Speaker 1

And sometimes, oh, babe, I'm feeling, you know, really vulnerable right now, and I I could use your, like, motivation, and you're...

Speaker 1

She's so good at talking to me, and I don't have to be the strongest guy in the room with with the Superman cape on.

Speaker 1

I could take that cape off and use it as a tissue if I need to every now and again.

Speaker 1

Okay?

Speaker 1

So maybe that would leave me embarrassed in a room.

Speaker 1

I could be in a business meeting with like guys talking about like investments.

Speaker 1

And I might say, hey, I don't know what that means.

Speaker 1

Can you guys explain that to me?

Speaker 1

I don't need to know everything in every moment.

Speaker 1

I don't need to be a know it all.

Speaker 1

I might say, what are we talking about here?

Speaker 1

Sorry, I'm just not well versed in this.

Speaker 1

And and it might make me seem to...

Speaker 1

They'll be like, you don't know what a blah blah blah tax return is?

Speaker 1

And I honestly, no.

Speaker 1

I have no idea what it is.

Speaker 1

And I might make a little joke about it too.

Speaker 1

And I'm not afraid to do that.

Speaker 1

And I'm not afraid because what?

Speaker 1

I'm just gonna pretend I know what what everyone's talking about.

Speaker 1

It's okay to not be fully educated on something.

Speaker 1

It's okay.

Speaker 1

It's okay to ask questions.

Speaker 0

What does Selena say to you when you say I'm not feeling motivated or I'm feeling vulnerable?

Speaker 1

She'll either say something super inspirational, so say me too.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

And I will just sit there, watch a movie or something.

Speaker 1

She's like a silver linings girl.

Speaker 1

She always guides me to the silver lining.

Speaker 1

And I'm very optimistic, but in certain times, maybe you're not.

Speaker 1

She always puts everything into perspective in a great way.

Speaker 1

And you need a partner that can do that for you.

Speaker 1

Sometimes I think people who are successful are trying to be successful.

Speaker 1

They don't revel in their own wins.

Speaker 1

Like, they try to act like, it's like, oh, like, your song went number one.

Speaker 1

It's like, oh, okay.

Speaker 1

酷。

Cool.

Speaker 1

It's like, no, that's really fucking cool.

Speaker 1

Don't be too cool to like revel in your wins.

Speaker 1

You just won a championship.

Speaker 1

That's awesome.

Speaker 1

Go celebrate.

Speaker 1

Tell your friends.

Speaker 1

You know, some people are so focused and I've been guilty of it when I was younger of just like focusing on the next thing and the next thing.

Speaker 1

You're gonna have a time in your life where you're not on top.

Speaker 1

And you'll be like, woah, why didn't I take the time to really savor that moment?

Speaker 0

You were talking about the stool earlier, and I was thinking that that makes so much sense when you're in a good place in your life.

Speaker 0

But early in your career, you were working on the Britney Spears Circus album, and you wanted to step away, and you were told that you'd lose your credit if you did that.

Speaker 0

Talk to me about how balance was not possible at that time.

Speaker 1

I was in a situation where I was making an album, and I was working with some people, and I had a long distance relationship with a girlfriend.

Speaker 1

And she was going to be in New York for a very short period of time.

Speaker 1

And that was like the only time she was gonna be there, and then she was gonna go back home to where she lived in Europe.

Speaker 1

And I had to stay and work on this thing, this Britney Spears album.

Speaker 1

I remember telling everyone, I said, guys, I I gotta go.

Speaker 1

I I gotta go see my partner.

Speaker 1

And they said, okay, you can go, but if you go, we're we're we're gonna take your name off the song.

Speaker 1

And I said, because I'm gonna go for two days, I'll be right back.

Speaker 1

I'll be I'll be right back.

Speaker 1

I'm gonna miss one day of work, and then the other day is a weekend.

Speaker 1

I'll be right back.

Speaker 1

They said, no.

Speaker 1

And I remember standing up for myself in that moment, and I wasn't afraid.

Speaker 1

I I was.

Speaker 1

But but I was pretending I wasn't afraid.

Speaker 1

And I said, fuck you guys.

Speaker 1

Like, I'm going to do this thing.

Speaker 1

If you wanna take it away, you can take it away.

Speaker 1

I know I'll be able to, like, keep making great music in my life.

Speaker 1

Like, if you take it away, that's on you guys.

Speaker 1

Because me leaving for thirty six hours, like to see someone I haven't seen in like three months and I'm probably not gonna see for another three months, I'm willing to take that risk because I needed to fill that part of my life up.

Speaker 1

What am I gonna do?

Speaker 1

Stay there and be miserable?

Speaker 1

And I was like, take it away.

Speaker 1

And I know know my worth.

Speaker 1

I know that I can create something great, truly spectacular.

Speaker 1

So take it away if you want.

Speaker 1

And I remember I did it.

Speaker 1

And setting that boundary, I came back.

Speaker 1

It was fine.

Speaker 1

Nothing...

Speaker 1

When I came back, nothing happened.
