Hi and welcome to PHQ, questions from the Personality Hacker Community.

Speaker 0

My name is Joel Mark Witt.

Speaker 0

And I'm Antonia Dodge.

Speaker 0

And let's get right to our question this week.

Speaker 1

你好。

Hi.

Speaker 1

This is Lydia from Olathe, Kansas and I have a question in regards to ENTJ versus INTJ.

Speaker 1

My best friend is one of these two and, me and her husband are having a dispute about them and I couldn't find anything on your website to, talk about the differences between how they show up and what their cognitive functions are and just, what they look like in daily functioning.

Speaker 1

So if you could answer that question for me, that would be fantastic.

Speaker 1

Thank you so much.

Speaker 1

Have a good day.

Speaker 0

Thanks Lydia for the question.

Speaker 0

What is the difference between ENTJs and INTJs?

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

This is a really good question because there is a lot of confusion.

Speaker 2

People trying to figure out their type, there can be confusion between understanding whether or not they're an ENTJ and an INTJ.

Speaker 2

In fact, I think a lot of ENTJs test out as INTJs.

Speaker 2

And the best way to figure out the differences between the two is to go into their cognitive function stacks.

Speaker 0

When Antonia talks about cognitive function stacks, she's actually talking about the mental wiring of your mind.

Speaker 0

This is the layer below just that Myers Briggs four digit or four letter code that you get, you know, INTJ.

Speaker 0

Basically, that code is shorthand for how your mind is wired, how you're perceiving the world, how you're making decisions about things that you see in the world.

The best way to find out a little bit more about this and have a a reference point for you is to go over to personalityhacker.com.

Speaker 0

If you're a brand new listener, put in the search term car model or cognitive functions, and you're gonna get a ton of information around this.

Speaker 0

The car model is a great place to start.

Speaker 0

It gives a it gives a great framework for what we're about to talk about around cognitive functions.

Speaker 0

So I'd recommend you go do that first.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

So we're gonna go into the cognitive function stack for both of these types because it really I mean, it's what informs why they're just not the same personality type, but one's introverted and one's extroverted.

Speaker 2

Like they really are two very distinctive types, though there obviously is going to be a lot of crossover.

Speaker 2

So the cognitive functions for ENTJ is and I'm going to reference the car model because it's just easier.

Speaker 2

The driver process is extroverted thinking or effectiveness.

Speaker 2

And the copilot process is introverted intuition or perspectives.

Speaker 2

The ten year old process is extroverted sensing or sensation.

Speaker 2

And the three year old process is introverted feeling or authenticity.

Speaker 2

Now for an INTJ, you've got the same cognitive functions, but you got them in a different order.

Speaker 2

They're sitting in different seats in the car.

Speaker 2

For an INTJ, their driver processes introverted intuition or perspectives.

Speaker 2

Now remember that was a copilot for ENTJs.

Speaker 2

And for INTJs, the copilot is extroverted thinking or effectiveness.

Speaker 2

So you've got the same two front passengers for both types, introverted intuition and extroverted thinking, but in reverse order.

Speaker 2

For an ENTJ, again, it's effectiveness as the driver, perspectives as the copilot.

Speaker 2

For an INTJ its perspectives as the driver and effectiveness as the copilot.

Speaker 2

Now for an INTJ sitting in the 10 year old position is introverted feeling or authenticity.

Speaker 2

And the three year old position is extroverted sensing or sensation.

Speaker 2

So again, you've got the same passengers in the back seat, but in different positions.

Speaker 2

You've got them in reverse order from 10 year old to three year old.

Speaker 2

Now that might seem like a subtle difference, but it actually changes everything.

Speaker 2

It changes the entire dynamic of the personality type and how they show up.

Speaker 2

The reason for this is our inferior process or a three year old process in the car model is a blind spot for us.

Speaker 2

And our 10 old process is a weakness but something that is on our radar.

Speaker 2

The way that the backseat passengers show up for these two types really informs how they're going to show up in general.

Speaker 2

Now because an ENTJ leads with extraverted thinking or effectiveness, which is a get things done process.

Speaker 2

And because their ten year old process is extroverted sensing or sensation, which is about being in your body, it's about enjoying things that are adrenaline oriented, it's about you know, basically experiencing the world by being very much in the moment.

Speaker 2

Because this is a dominant process driver process and a ten year old process or a conscious process for them, it means that energy is not as much of an issue for ENTJs.

Speaker 2

In fact, ENTJs have quite a bit of energy in order to accomplish what they want to accomplish.

Speaker 2

For them energy management comes more around wanting to get so many things done that they're trying to optimize their impact.

Speaker 2

They're trying to be efficient and effective because they're trying to get so many different things done.

Speaker 2

That means the energy management is important to them but important to them in an optimization way.

Speaker 2

Whereas INTJ lead with introverted intuition or perspectives and their ten year old process is introverted feeling or authenticity.

Speaker 2

That means that what's more on their conscious awareness is things that have to do with contemplation, introspection, understanding how things play out in the long run.

Speaker 2

And it also means that energy is going to be a lot less available to them because their sensation process, extroverted sensing or the part of them that enjoys adrenaline, enjoys being in the moment, enjoys sensory experience, is their three year old process, that's their blind spot.

Speaker 2

So for INTJs energy management is not simply something that they're trying to figure out in order to optimize getting all this stuff done.

Speaker 2

For them it's more of a, it's kind of like a survival technique.

Speaker 0

More conservation than optimization I would say.

Speaker 2

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2

Cause an INTJ energy management is like the holy grail usually.

Speaker 2

There's only so much energy that they have and INTJs just like ENTJs think in big terms they're trying to get huge things done.

Speaker 2

But it's usually one big master plan.

Speaker 2

It's like one big kind of epic thing and a major piece for INTJs of trying to figure out how to get this big thing handled or big thing accomplished is frequently how do I do it recognizing how little energy I may have as an individual.

Speaker 2

Another piece of it is while both NTJ types can be excellent leaders, because extroverted thinking is the driver process for an ENTJ, extroverted thinking understands that in order to get these big, big projects accomplished, these big game things accomplished, they're going to have to bring in other resources.

Speaker 2

They're going to have to bring in other people in order to make these things happen.

Speaker 2

And because it's a driver dominant process for them, it means that they've been doing this for basically their entire lives.

Speaker 2

They learned this lesson very, very young.

Speaker 2

You're gonna have to bring in other people in order to get big game plans accomplished.

Speaker 2

And so they tend to build the skill of you know, it's basically corralling those people.

Speaker 2

They build the skill of getting other people involved in order to get these things accomplished very young.

Speaker 2

And they have a tendency not always, but they trend toward getting like building skill in it.

Speaker 2

Usually a talent is not very useful unless you also build skill to go with it.

Speaker 2

And ENTJs have talent but also a lot of skill developed in leadership or specifically leadership that gets people to do you know projects.

Speaker 2

For INTJs, they also have extroverted thinking, but it's their co pilot position.

Speaker 2

So it's not something that they've been going to their entire life in the same way that an ENTJ has.

Speaker 2

And so while they also have talent for leading people, it's not necessarily something that they've been building skill in over time.

Speaker 2

Instead, they've been focusing their efforts on introverted intuition or perspectives as their dominant process, which means that they put a lot more stock and value in future casting, future pacing, understanding concepts in sort of a bigger way and the implications of these big game thoughts on themselves and on humanity, etc.

Speaker 2

So for an INTJ, usually when leadership comes up for an INTJ it's because they either had an inner drive or the environment really encouraged them to go to their copilot and develop that.

Speaker 2

They developed their extroverted thinking because something told them they needed to.

Speaker 2

It's usually not an unconscious inner drive like it is with an ENTJ.

Speaker 2

For an ENTJ it's their dominant process so it is an unconscious prime mover.

Speaker 2

For an INTJ it has to be a thoughtful decision to go to that space.

Speaker 2

So while INTJs have a similar leadership style or talent as ENTJs, they don't necessarily have the skill developed.

Speaker 2

For an ENTJ, they usually have the skill developed but unfortunately their copilot process being perspectives or introverted intuition, unless the world has encouraged them to go that place, that's the thing that they may have avoided.

Speaker 2

And the reason why I say unfortunately is because the world usually does not encourage people to go to an intuitive space like introverted intuition.

Speaker 2

The world doesn't really understand that.

Speaker 2

So that might be a blind, not a blind spot for them, but that might be something that they haven't really built a lot of skill around.

Speaker 2

So an ENTJ may actually be really super active and very energetic and very like get a lot of things done, but it might not take in the scope that their heart really desires them to take in.

Speaker 2

It might not be you know, motivating others to focus on projects that are really big game.

Speaker 2

Whereas an INTJ is almost always going to think in big game, their question is going to be how do I get people to help me create that?

Speaker 2

For an ENTJ getting people to help create things is easy, but how do I tap into that inner part of me that helps me understand how to get something really big accomplished?

Speaker 0

So the principles here if you're one of these two types, know you're an ENTJ and you're trying to determine am I an ENTJ?

Speaker 0

我是INTJ吗?

Am I an INTJ?

Speaker 0

One of the things that I and I just want to mention briefly that might trip up some ENTJs, you are an extrovert, but your extroverted that cognitive function you're using, that extroverted thinking or effectiveness process is not always just focused around being an extrovert around people.

Speaker 0

You know, we often think of extroverts as showing up as people people.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

They like to be around people and social all the time.

Speaker 0

And you can be that way as an ENTJ, but often you're focusing that process, that extroverted process on accomplishing things in the outside world.

Speaker 0

You're focusing on that accomplishing tasks, managing people and resources and that's how you're extroverting.

Speaker 0

So you you can often as an ENTJ show up more introverted than people would assume or people would expect of you because of that.

Speaker 0

Because the fact that when you're extroverting, it's not necessarily people focused extroversion.

Speaker 0

It's focused on getting things done.

Speaker 0

So that's one little tweak I would say to just kinda keep in the back of your head if you're trying to determine between these two types.

Speaker 0

And I think the thing that the real principle here that you said, Antonia, that I wanna just hit home at the end of this is that piece of energy management.

Speaker 0

You know, that that piece if the energy that you're showing up with or how much you wanna conserve energy or optimize energy is a really great question for you if you're struggling between, am I an ENTJ?

Speaker 0

我是ENTJ吗?

Am I am I an INTJ?

Speaker 0

That's a great focus question for you to determine what do you see as the benefit or the usefulness of energy.

Speaker 0

How do you see it?

Speaker 0

Do you wanna conserve it or do you wanna optimize it and use it to its fullest capacity?

Speaker 2

I think, you just mentioned that concept about you know, ENTJs being extroverts, but not in the way that we necessarily socially define extrovert like not very social.

Speaker 2

I think ENTJs can actually get annoyed by people if those people are interrupting their ability to get things done.

Speaker 2

So actually some ENTJs might think they're introverts because people drain them if those people are removing their ability to accomplish tasks.

Speaker 2

Because extroverted thinking gets energy by projects, by getting things done, by getting things handled, by understanding what works in the outside world.

Speaker 2

And if the people you're surrounding yourself with are like a constant obstruction to that.

Speaker 0

Crazy makers.

Speaker 2

Yeah, if they're crazy makers you might think that you're an introvert because you don't want be anywhere around those people.

Speaker 2

That's exactly that's a perfect word is crazy maker.

Speaker 2

So for an ENTJ it's very easy for them to think that they're introverts because they might want to just stay away from all those crazy makers.

Speaker 2

And so they go, Oh, I don't like crazy makers, I must be an introvert.

Speaker 2

I think it's less likely for an INTJ to believe they're an extrovert.

Speaker 2

Although I think it can happen sometimes if they've got a lot of skill developed in their extroverted thinking process, that co pilot process.

Speaker 2

But for most most of the time INTJs know that they have some issue or some struggle with energy management.

Speaker 2

I think another piece really comes down to this introverted feeling part of them, excuse me.

Speaker 2

The authenticity part for an INTJ it's their 10 year old, which means it's going be a weakness but on their conscious awareness.

Speaker 2

For an ENTJ it's going be the three year old process, which means it's not even going to really be very conscious for them at all.

Speaker 2

I've noticed that ENTJs have a more resolute idea of what is right and wrong.

Speaker 2

Not always this also will be influenced by things like your Enneagram type and you know how you grew up etc.

Speaker 2

But I have noticed that ENTJs have a little bit more of a black and white perspective about how things should be working in reality.

Speaker 2

When they've come down on a core value, it's just it's like cemented inside of them.

Speaker 2

You don't do that.

Speaker 2

Anybody who does that is a reprehensible person.

Speaker 2

Whereas I've noticed that INTJs because introverted feeling or authenticity is their tertiary or ten year old process, I've noticed that they're a little, not morally ambiguous by any means, but they can be a little bit more flexible in how they perceive good and bad.

Speaker 0

They have more fidelity to the perception there.

Speaker 0

That's a great idea.

Speaker 0

Seem a

Speaker 2

little bit more nuance.

Speaker 2

They tend to not be as, I guess the word is judgmental.

Speaker 2

ENTJs are leading with an extroverted judging process.

Speaker 2

Extroverted thinking is about decision making, it's about judging, and it's and it go you know, its attitude is pointing towards the outside world.

Speaker 2

And because introverted feeling or authenticity is their three year old or their inferior, then they they kind of have a set it and forget it.

Speaker 2

It's like I I have deemed this good or bad, and this is how things are.

Speaker 2

And if the outside world isn't responding that way, it's you know, well then it should be doing this thing.

Speaker 2

And why is it not?

Speaker 2

And it must be faulty or broken or must be defective.

Speaker 2

The way for an ENTJ to get out of that space is to go more and more into their co pilot process of introverted intuition.

Speaker 2

Introverted intuition will allow them to see from multiple perspectives and understand how, you know, that concept that everything everybody does makes complete and total sense to them.

Speaker 2

Well, you'll know you have fully gotten into your copilot process of introverted intuition if you can get to that space.

Speaker 2

If you can get so much inside somebody else's head that you realize why everything they're doing makes complete and total sense to them and they really based on who they are, the system of who they are in the moment, they can't really do anything else.

Speaker 2

Like whatever they're doing is the inevitable emergent of the entire system that is them.

Speaker 2

And so for an ENTJ, you can tell that they're getting seasoned over time because they're getting less judgmental.

Speaker 2

Things are less and less black and white.

Speaker 2

Things are more, they have a more like broader view and they have more acceptance.

Speaker 2

Whereas with an INTJ, they kind of understand that that's a principle they understand from the get go because that's their dominant process.

Speaker 2

Introverted intuition is where they live.

Speaker 2

So giving other, they don't necessarily give other people grace, but they do at least understand where that person's coming Like by grace I mean they won't necessarily like assume the other person's doing the right thing, right?

Speaker 2

They're not necessarily going to be 100% forgiving, but they will be understanding.

Speaker 2

They will understand why that person is coming from where they're coming from.

Speaker 2

Whereas an INTJ that gets more seasoned over time isn't simply going to be in that thoughtful space, they're actually going to be in an active space.

Speaker 2

They're going to take their thoughtfulness and their ability to see these big broad perspectives and take in a lot of territory.

Speaker 2

And then they're going to apply it to projects in the outside world.

Speaker 2

So they're going to become more and more active participants.

Speaker 2

They're actually going to be leading projects and they're going to be making big things happen in the outside world.

Speaker 2

That doesn't necessarily mean that they're at top leadership, although that can happen as well.

Speaker 2

But it does mean that they're going to be making an impact in their environment, which for INTJs, once they get to that space, they realize that that is massively rewarding.

Speaker 2

It is way more rewarding to make an impact in the outside world than to sit back and be a spectator.

Speaker 2

So for INTJs usually it's the spectator piece that has to be overcome and they have to become active participants.

Speaker 2

For ENTJs it's usually that they have to take more of a spectator position, that they can't just make assumptions and you know, start building on those assumptions or moving with those assumptions, that they need to step back a little bit and take a broader view.

Speaker 2

And so if you notice ENTJs and INTJs as they become more and more seasoned will look more and more like each other.

Speaker 2

However, you're still going to have like more morality fidelity with an INTJ whereas with an ENTJ you're going to have more action orientation.

Speaker 2

And I think that energy piece is also big.

Speaker 0

Yeah, it's really interesting in our, personal development starter kit for both ENTJs and INTJs.

Speaker 0

Part of the starter kit comes with a bonus where I interviewed, I had like this long hour, I think it was like almost an hour and a half conversation with an ENTJ and an INTJ where we discussed some of the differences in how their personalities show up.

Speaker 0

And we were talking about how they each see each other's dominant and copilot process and how being around other people, like if you're an INTJ for example, being around an ENTJ who's also on a personal development growth path, you can help support each other because you have as your as your dominant process, your your driver, that's the copilot of the other person and vice versa.

Speaker 0

And so it's a great sympatico relationship for kind of iron sharpening iron in a sense of growing together.

Speaker 0

And so it's a really fascinating conversation in that starter kit where we unpack some of these differences between the two types.

Speaker 0

And so, if if you have already gotten the starter kit, you you have access to that right now and and you can listen to that in your starter kit.

Speaker 0

I think that's a really fascinating conversation around this exact topic.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

And and if you don't have the starter kit, my recommendation is to go to the website and put in ENTJ and INTJ.

Speaker 2

And we have done long form podcasts on on each of these types.

Speaker 2

And we've also written articles on both of the types.

Speaker 2

And the car model will be in the articles as well.

Speaker 2

So if you are still having trouble trying to suss out which one you might be, then my recommendation is to go listen to those podcasts and then also read the articles, look at the car model side by side and try to determine which one is actually a better fit with the cognitive function configuration.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And that and that's a recommendation.
