I completely, completely understand that feeling.

In fact, the other day I had a conversation that brought that idea coming right back to me about being on the struggle bus.

Last week, I had the opportunity to go to the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida for the change of command of the VR fifty eight Sunseekers.

我的一个朋友叫泰德，他即将接任中队指挥，我有幸去那里为他庆祝。

One of my buddies, his name is Ted, he was taking over the squadron and I had a chance to go and celebrate with him.

那真是太有趣了，看到大家都穿得这么正式。

It was so fun, great to see everybody dressed up.

我甚至穿了西装，这简直不可思议，因为我从来不会这么打扮，但你知道，他值得这样，所以我这么做了。

I even wore a suit which is wild because I'd never dress up ever, but you know, he deserved it, so I did.

While I was there, he mentioned that about our first flight together.

那已经是2009年的事了。

And that was way back in 2009.

He was a student, I was an instructor, we were flying the T-thirty four where he sat in the front and I sat right behind him.

And we would do some flight instruction and like he I would teach him how to fly.

That flight back in 2009 could have gone a lot of different directions.

And the fact of the matter is that flight, Ted was really struggling.

When you're practicing maneuvers and then one goes bad, it can really easily cascade into an effect that makes the entire flight a train wreck.

And as we started to head down those tracks, I could see the train coming.

我知道我们必须停下来，阻止事态恶化，好好谈一谈。

And I knew we needed to stop the progression and just talk through it.

I still remember the sound of Ted's voice.

He was super disappointed.

他知道自己的表现没有达到自己的期望。

He knew that he hadn't performed the way that he wanted to.

对很多人来说，那一刻可能会成为一道天花板。

And for a lot of people, that moment can become a ceiling.

但对泰德来说，那却成了一架梯子。

But for Ted, it became a ladder.

泰德有一种叫‘Anagoge’的东西，即使他并不知道这个词的意思。

Ted had a thing called Anagoge, even if he didn't know what that word meant.

那我们来谈谈它意味着什么。

So let's talk about what it means.

Anagoge 简单来说就是被引领向上。

Anagoge simply means to be led upward.

这是一种观念：困难、责任和压力能够将一个人提升到更高的能力水平。

It's an idea that difficulty and responsibility and pressure can lift a person to a higher level of capability.

现在回过头看，我能清楚地看到泰德是如何运用它的。

And as I look back now, I can see exactly how Ted used it.

首先，他那次艰难的飞行并没有定义他。

First, that difficult flight that he was having, it didn't it didn't define him.

他没有让困境将他压垮，反而把它当作变得更好的理由。

Instead of letting the struggle push him down, he used it as a reason to get better.

有些人把困难看作判决，觉得自己根本做不到。

Some people can see difficulty as a verdict and they feel like they can't do it.

这太难了。

It's too hard.

这不适合我。

It's not for me.

真正成长的人把困难看作是力量训练。

The people who grow actually see it as resistance training.

逆境成为一种向上的力量。

Adversity becomes an upward force.

你的处境如何并不重要。

It doesn't matter what your situation is.

每天做出一些微小的决定，只是比之前稍微好一点，正是这些决定能够造就伟大。

It's the small decisions every day to just do a little bit better than before, and these are the decisions that can create greatness.

我不是在开玩笑。

I'm not joking.

它真的能够造就伟大。

It can create greatness.

我想到的第二件事是，泰德并没有一味追求安逸。

The second thing I think about is the fact that Ted didn't just chase comfort.

安逸只会让你停留在当前水平。

Comfort maintains your current level.

如果你想成长，成长就需要摩擦。

If you wanna grow, growth requires friction.

泰德不断让自己回到那些他知道必须进步的情境中。

Ted kept putting himself back in the situations where he knew he had to improve.

在他整个职业生涯中，他主动申请驾驶多种飞机。

He put his hand up to fly multiple aircraft over the course of his entire career.

他每一次检查飞行都表现优异。

He crushed every single checkride.

他不知疲倦地确保所有水兵都得到妥善照顾。

He worked tirelessly to make sure that all of his sailors were taken care of.

随着时间推移，他不断给自己施加的压力将他推向了更高的层次。

Over time, that pressure that he kept putting himself in elevated him.

泰德重新定义了这种挣扎，而不是问：我为什么在这个问题上如此挣扎？

And Ted reframed the struggle instead of asking, why am I struggling with this?

更好的问题是：这想教给我什么？

The better question is, what is this trying to teach me?

这种思维的转变，正是Anagoge的起点。

That shift in mindset, that's where Anagoge begins.

它关乎你向上的轨迹，以及你如何通过学习和理解来利用它。

It's your trajectory upwards and how you leverage it through learning and through understanding.

And as Ted continued to grow throughout his Navy career, he continued to succeed at every single benchmark.

So why did he do that?

他为什么能取得成功？

Why did he succeed?

因为责任与努力将他推向了更高处。

Because responsibility and effort pulled him upward.

海军不断给他分配越来越重要的角色。

The Navy kept giving him bigger and bigger roles.

They gave him more expectations, more people who depended on him, and the responsibility has a way of forcing you to grow.

I think about that when I had kids because I was kind of a chaotic maniac before then.

And then the responsibility of children really brought me and centered me to where I was.

You either rise to meet it, or you're shrink from it and you fail.

And you will be faced with the same thing.

Throughout his career, Ted reflected.

The experience alone just didn't create the improvement.

It's the upward movement that happens when someone pauses, they study their mistakes, they reflect, and they come back sharper than next time.

It doesn't matter if you fail at this point, it matters if you continue.

It matters if you put that effort continuously forward.

And I think it's important to find to point out that we're not talking about instant results.

Progress is gradual.

It's adding one more thing to your resume, it's being that much better to the people around you.

Over the years, those small improvements will compound.

If you are a leader, I will say that good environments and good leaders allow people to wrestle with challenges without immediately rescuing them.

Let your people stay in the fight and help them grow.

Do not do it for them.

Give them the tools that they need to succeed and offer mentorship.

Don't push them off into the deep end and watch them drown.

The process is uncomfortable, but that upward movement usually happens when you're operating just beyond your current ability.

And that's where you want to live, and that's where you want your people to live, slightly outside their comfort zone, but not far enough to where you're just gonna fall off a cliff.

A lot of talented people step away when things get difficult, and I need you to keep showing up.

一致性是长期成功的隐性关键。

Consistency is the hidden ingredient behind long term success.

That's the real definition of Anagoge, continuous elevation.

那就是你需要扎根的地方，是我希望你扎根的地方，也是我们需要共同扎根的地方。

And that's where you need to plant your flag, that's where I need to plant your flag, that's where we need to plant our flags.

每一天，都要做出那些能为你自身和依赖你的人带来巨大改变的微小决定。

Every single day, make the micro decisions that create the big changes in your life and the life of the other people that depend on you.

这可不是运气。

That's not luck.

这是永不满足的坚韧。

That is insatiable perseverance.

所以如果你正在听这段话，并且感觉自己陷入了困境，也许周围的人正在获得机会，也许进展感觉缓慢，也许上一次飞行没有如你所愿，这很好。
