Viral memes and online catchphrases, some humorous, some crude, many ambiguous, have slipped from screens into class rooms and office chats.

So I was wondering, have you used any of the memes or Internet plans in your daily conversation?

I I absolutely did that.

而且我觉得这是Z世代普遍会做的一种行为，会被认为很酷或者显得我们很懂网络。

And I think that is some kind of a common behavior that a lot of our, like, Gen Z would do that would be, like, perceived as cool or we use Internet.

我们了解那些网络俚语和梗图，有时候——当然不是指全部——这个话题会围绕我们该如何理解这些梗图，如何意识到生活已被这些梗图狂轰滥炸。

We we know that kind of Internet slang or memes, and that sometimes, I wouldn't say of course, this whole topic is is is gonna be about how should we understand these memes, how how should we realize that we've been bombarded by these memes in our lives.

但关键在于，如今使用起来非常方便，有时仅需一个词或短语就能完整表达你的想法。

But the thing is that nowadays, it's been quite convenient, and it's been very, very easy to use when maybe only one word or one phrase can just express the whole feeling of your idea.

我对此存疑，不过可以晚点再讨论。

I doubt that, but we can talk about it later.

我我觉得不是Z世代。

I I don't think it's Gen Z.

我觉得是α世代。

I think it's Gen Alpha.

It's the next one.

It's the youngest group, right, that's using these the most Oh.

Everybody's using it.

Even my parents sometimes use the kind land.

They use the previous well, not previous generation, like, the kindest land that's popular ten years ago, but they use it.

But that's that's what I mean, though.

Each generation has their own period of being annoying.

Their parents had it, their parents had it, their parents' parents' parents had it, and it's gonna happen again after Gen Alpha.

It's just for me, it's just kind of like something that young people go through because and we'll get into the reasons a little bit later, but one of the reasons is because it's out there and everybody's talking about it

I think it's just amplified these days because of the Internet, because of social media, and because of the meme culture that people are more exposed to it and therefore use it more often perhaps.

But the news story here definitely is making headlines, and it's about younger generation, young students at school.

甚至包括一些年纪最小的孩子。

Even some of the youngest ones.

某些网络流行语在中国小学生中变得非常流行。

Certain Internet slang expressions have become very, popular among even primary school students in China.

比如这段视频显示，学生们不断重复着这类梗——就像这个原本表示‘当然’或‘肯定’的中文短语。

And one example is this video is showing that students are keeping saying these memes like This is a Chinese phrase that used to mean, like, sure or definitely.

就像当你问‘你能搞定吗？’

It's like when you ask, can you handle this?

对方只回一句‘必须的’。

And the other person just replies, totes.

哦，好吧。

Oh, okay.

That kind of thing.

但关键在于，为了鼓励学生学习更丰富、更具表现力和优雅的语言，而非过度依赖网络俚语，一位中文老师推荐了几个能表达相似含义的传统成语。

So but the thing is that to encourage students to learn more, like, expressive and elegant language instead of replying too much on Internet slang, one Chinese teacher suggested several traditional idioms that can convey a similar meaning.

我觉得这些很难直接翻译成英文，但我可以列举一些，比如用来形容几乎肯定会成功的情况。

That that I I think it's really hard to directly translate into English, but I can list some, like, that let's say, it's it's about almost certain to succeed.

或者当你回复‘你懂的’时，表示我信心十足且准备充分。

Or I am fully confident and well prepared when you're replying that, you bet.

那些是梗吗？

Those are memes?

Those are the good and elegant words.

And that's my point.

你不该说的是，一个简单的梗或网络用语竟能如此完美地表达我的感受。

What you shouldn't said, oh, a simple meme or Internet slang can express my feelings so perfectly.

我懂你的意思，而且我也感受到——有些我不知如何完美表达的东西，正被他人精准传递和呈现，那真是个美妙的时刻。

I know what you mean, and also I get the feeling that, ah, there's something that I do not know how to express perfectly, and it is being delivered and expressed by someone, and that is a really good moment.

但这样的时刻在过去极为罕见，也弥足珍贵。

But that moment is so rare in the past and also so precious.

我在中国诗词或文笔优美的小说里常邂逅这样的瞬间。

I find those moments in, for example, Chinese poems or in beautiful written beautifully written novels.

当某个特定时刻或微妙纤细的感受被他人描述时，我会觉得我们的灵魂在那一刻产生了共鸣。

One one specific moment or feeling, a very intricate, delicate feeling is being described by someone, and I feel like, oh, our soul just clicked at that moment.

但如今，我认为这些梗图并未做到这点。

Yet, nowadays, I don't think these memes are doing that.

我觉得它们把我们的情感简化了。

I think they're simplifying our feelings.

我认为语言是有力量的。

And I think language has power.

When your feeling is simplified, it is possible that the way you think, the way you understand yourself is also simplified.

And that is related to when you're playing video games, usually, would have a buff or a shield like a defense system.

And when that system got broken because of certain things your opponent figure is doing, then the hurt you got would be much higher or much extensive.

And that is showing that, oh, my defense just got lowered or my defense just got removed because of certain thing, and now I'm so vulnerable and it's really easy to hurt me.

My point was that is just a word describing that currently something has touched me in a bad way really, really heavily.

But it didn't say what has hurt my emotion.

Is it because you said something that was right about me but I don't like?

Is it because you're accusing me of doing something that I didn't do?

Is it because that your way of speaking is so rude and hurt my feelings?

None of this information is included in that one simple phrase, and people use that phrase and it simplifies their feelings.

不过每一代人都有自己独特的语言密码和文化。

But every generation has its own linguistic code, though, and culture.

在中国确实如此。

This is true in China.

在美国也是如此。

It's true in America.

在澳大利亚和英国也是如此。

It's true in Australia and England.

随便选个国家。

Pick a country.

这也是一种交流方式。

And this is also a way of communication.

它可能不是最优雅或最清晰的交流形式，但它确实能让人们了解你在特定时刻的感受。

It might not be the most elegant or articulate form of communication, but it still is a way of letting people know how you feel in a particular moment.

问题是老年人不喜欢这样，所以才成了问题。

The thing is old people don't like it, and that's why it becomes a thing.

但这没什么大不了的。

But it's not that big a deal.

如果是粗俗的，那你就越界了。

If it's vulgar, you're crossing a line there.

If it's defamatory, you're you're crossing a line there.

但如果你作为一个年轻人正在学习如何沟通、与人相处，我并不觉得这有什么问题

But if you're just figuring out as a young person how to communicate, get along with other people, I don't see a problem with

this at all.

Before choosing side, before I personally choose a side, Yishun, you chose you choose a side.

你觉得这是大事还是小事？

Do you think it's a big deal or not?

我确实觉得现在这事正变得严重起来。

I kind of think it is becoming a big deal right now.

问题是当很多成年人说这类话时，正如你所说他们是用简化方式表达的，但那是在他们已经掌握大量知识、了解全局背景甚至词语历史的前提下。

And the thing is that when a lot of, like, adults are saying these kind of things, they are expressing the ways in a simplified way as you said, but that's under the circumstance of they have already learned a lot of stuff and you have the knowledge of the whole scenario and maybe the history of that word.

完全同意。

Totes.

对吧？

Right?

感觉不错，不是吗？

Feels good, doesn't it?

当这些小学生使用这些词汇时，他们只是获取了这些偏见梗图的快捷方式。

When these, like, primary school students, they are using these words, they just got a shortcut of these slants and memes.

他们并没有接触到背后的...

They didn't get to the, like, the the behind

深层含义？

The meaning?

那个的。

The of that.

他们不知道自己实际上在说什么。

They don't know what they're actually saying.

是的。

Yes.

而且他们实际上就是在直接使用这些方式，我觉得这很酷。

And they are just actually directly using them in the way that I think it is cool.

但他们并没有真正学会这种语言或语言学上的表现方式。

But they are not actually learning the way that this language or linguistically performed.

此外，你可能会遇到诸如逐渐丧失用语法正确构造长句能力的问题。

And also, you would maybe encounter problems such as you're losing the ability to grammarly form a long sentence.

有时候当你总是使用短句，这会影响这种能力。

Sometimes when you're using the short ones all the time, it affects the ability.

当然，另一个问题是针对特别年幼的孩子——就像你提到的，他们中有些人并不理解这些词的构成，会误将粗俗词汇当作普通流行语使用。

And, of course, another thing would be we are for especially young kids, like you should mention, and some of them do not understand the formation of such words, they are mistakenly use a rude word as something that is just a catchphrase.

这本身没有负面含义，但也是个问题。

There's no negative side or connotation related to it, and that is also a problem.

Yeah.

这是个问题，这时候就需要家长和老师介入并说不。

It's a problem, and that's when parents and teachers step in and say, no.

你不能那样使用它。

You don't use it like that.

但是，年轻人还在学习语言的过程中，所以他们会犯这样的错误。

But, young people are still figuring out language themselves, so they're gonna make mistakes like that.

他们会说些不合适的话，有时甚至是贬低人的话，这是错误的，不应该被允许。

They're gonna say inappropriate things or sometimes derogatory things, and it's a mistake, and it shouldn't be allowed.

别误会我的意思。

Don't misunderstand me.

But what I'm saying is it's gonna happen.

You just need people in the right positions to say, no.

当他们说那种话时，要指出这是不对的。

That's not correct when they say those types of things.

不过，我们能为成年人做些什么吗？

Is there anything that we can do, though, for the well, maybe for adult.

我同意史蒂夫的观点，这其实不是什么大问题。

I can agree with Steve that it not it is not that big a deal.

我们仍然可以使用中国诗词中的优美诗句。

We are still able to use the beautiful lines from Chinese poems.

我们仍然可以在正式场合使用非常规范的语言和中文成语。

We're still able to use really formal languages, Chinese idioms, and official settings.

但对小孩子来说，可能比成年人要更严肃些。

But for young kids, probably, it's a bit more serious than for adults.

但我们是否应该为此做些什么呢？

But should we do something about it?

我们对此能做些什么吗？

Is there anything we can do about it?

这就是为什么很多人都在称赞我之前在这个视频里提到的那位老师，他们说有时候我们的大脑被网络上的抨击和梗图占据了，甚至忘记了还有更优雅、更有表现力的说话方式。

That's why a lot of people are praising the teacher that I mentioned before in under this video, saying that, sometimes our brain has been taken over by these Internet slams and memes, and sometimes we may even forget that there are more elegant and expressive ways to speak.

我完全能理解这一点，因为我想我之前在往期节目中提到过。

And I can totally relate to it is because I think I mentioned this before in in previous shows.

我记得在小学时，我们学习了很多中国古代的诗词。

When I see because in primary school, we learn a lot of poems from, like, ancient China.

那时候很多著名诗人看到壮丽景象时就会创作出伟大的作品。

That's when a lot of these, like, very significant and renowned poets to make they they made it when they see something very magnificent.

这就是...等等

And that is how Hold on.

你希望每个人走在路上都像莎士比亚一样说话。

You want everybody to be a Shakespeare when they're walking around.

不是这样的。

It's not like that.

But not like saying some simple words, not like me just saying magnificent.

'壮观'挺好的。

Magnificent is good.

可以说'让我叹为观止'，但有些人只会说'哇，兄弟'。

It can say, take my breath away, but some people say, wow, bro.

Wow.

但这样不行。

But that's not okay.

如果每个人都这么说，我觉得就不合适了。

If everybody's saying that, I don't think it's okay.

为什么那样不行？

Why is that not okay?

因为太简单了。

Because it's just too simple.

这对每个人来说都太简单了。

It's too simple for everybody.

Right?

如果每个人都用那种语言表达，你就会失去细微差别，失去微妙的言外之意，也无法用多种方式形容美好。

If everybody's using that kind of language, then you lose the nuance, and you lose the subtle implications, and you lose different ways to say it's beautiful.

美可以有多种不同的表现形式。

It can be beautiful in different ways.

Yeah.

I mean, I know what you're saying.

你希望人们成为优秀的表达者。

You want people to be good speakers.

You want them to be articulate when they use their words, and that's never a bad thing.

But you can be that in the proper context

凡事都有个时间和场合，也有其特定背景。

There's a there's a time and a place, and there's there's context for things.

所以我觉得这事可能没那么严重。

And that's why I think it might not be so serious.

但这事也有另一面。

But there is a flip side to that coin.

Let's talk about this.

It came out in February.

数据来源于中国青年报社会调查中心。

It was from the Social Survey Center of China Youth Daily.

这是他们通过调查发现的。

This is what they found through their survey.

69%的受访者表示，他们担心网络低俗梗的过度使用会影响年轻人'正常说话'的能力。

69% of of responders said they were worried about the overuse of vulgar Internet memes that could hinder young people young people's ability to, quote, speak properly.

关于这些梗对青少年的负面影响，约53%的受访者认为可能导致词汇误用，即不能正确使用词语。

Regarding the negative compacts impacts, excuse me, of such memes on adolescents, Fifty three percent almost of respondents said that they may lead to a misuse of vocabulary, meaning not using the words properly.

还有近32%的人认为某些梗低俗无意义，会损害年轻人正确价值观和世界观的形成。

And 31%, almost 32, thought that some memes are vulgar and meaningless, and it undermines the development of young people's proper values and worldview.

这些问题听起来确实很严重。

Those are those sound really serious.

确实很严重，但您怎么评估这种影响呢？

They are quite serious, but how do you evaluate that?

这是个很难回答的问题。

That's a tough thing to do.

你如何判断一个人的世界观和价值观是否被网络梗所侵蚀？

How do you how can you tell if someone's worldviews and values are undermined by memes?

这非常难以量化。

That's very hard to measure.

And that is why I think schools should step in.

父母应该照看孩子，并在严重问题发生时保持警惕。

Parents should look after their kids and also watch out once serious issue happen.

但与此同时，作为一位家长，我也部分认同史蒂夫的观点。

But at the same time, as a parent myself, I also want to agree with Steve a little bit.

每一代人都有他们惹人厌的机会和表现方式。

That is every generation has their opportunity and their face to be annoying.

当他们这样做时，或许我们可以宽容些，给他们点时间，因为他们仍需要与同伴、同学沟通和建立联系。

And when they do, maybe we can, you know, cut them some slack, give them a moment because they do still need to communicate and bond with their peers, with their classmates.

他们想要交朋友。

They want to make friends.

Right.

And it depends on the kind of language they use.

我记得大约在1999或2000年播出的一个电视广告。

I remember a TV commercial came out in around 1999 or 2000, something like that.

It was a Budweiser beer commercial, and they played it during the Super Bowl, the American Football Championship game, And this commercial caught on like wildfire.

In the commercial, when the guy answered the phone you know, what's up.

Right?

Like, hey.
