The holiday doesn't truly wrap up until the first full moon rises on the calendar, and that is when it's lantern festival time.

Today is the Lantern Festival.

It's also known as or the It falls on the fifteenth day of the first month on the Chinese calendar, and also this day is the first full moon of the year.

So in ancient Chinese, night was called can also mean the beginning of something.

Hence, the name as in or the first moon night.

So that's a nationwide celebration that's also marking the time that we wrap up the Chinese New Year season, the holiday season.

But the traditions, I would say, somewhat stayed very similar over the past two thousand years.

It's basically admiring a lot of lanterns, going to fairs, eating sticky rice balls and so on and so forth.

But and also, for example, this year, they are also handing up a lot of lanterns that people gather around in parks and also in homes, in streets, in shopping malls.

And people, you know, trying to crash those riddles is also one part of the activities that we do during the lantern festival.

Also, this time last year, I learned about how the Lantern Festival is closely related to another idea of the Chinese Valentine's Day, you know?

Because traditionally, people believe that the or the double seventh day usually falls on the July to be the traditional Chinese Valentine's Day given the the the the mythology that goes with it.

But unlike Qixi where women are the main participants in activities such as, you know, praying for very clever handicraft skills.

The Lantern Festival, now that we're talking about it, is when unmarried young men and women go out to admire lanterns, to do what you just mentioned, Steve, guess out the riddles and meet with each other and chat with each other and have fun and form romantic connections together.

So is this the unofficial Valentine's Day in China

So the moon is going to disappear for about an hour before reappearing as a deep red blood moon, and this will be the only total lunar eclipse of the year.

But how is the holiday, the Lantern Festival, typically celebrated and and maybe more how it's celebrated this year.

It's gonna be a little bit different this time around.

I mean, it's the Lantern Festival, so we gotta have Lantern Fair.

That's always one of the most representative celebrations during this festival.

And these and these things happen all across the country.

All across the country.

For example, if you look at places like Zigong, which is in Southwest China Sichuan Province, then that place is known as the city of lanterns and also the home to one of the most representative lantern fairs in China.

So picture this, hundreds of giant lanterns lighting up the night.

其中一些高达数层楼，横跨广阔的主题区域。

Some of them towering several stories high and stretching across huge theme zones.

You turn one corner and suddenly you're in the middle of an ancient Chinese legend glowing in color and light and you if you walk a little bit further and then there is the massive dinosaur lantern because Zigong is also known for its fossil heritage discovered locally.

So that's such a colorful picture that I remember seeing a video from that lantern fair.

And then there are also AI powered interactive displays where kids, they can literally talk to digital creatures as in talk to the lanterns, I would imagine.

And families, they can also travel there and get into the immersive light world that almost feel like dream and more like stepping into an active live action fantasy film.

I think this is in Zigong right now.

It's pieced together from 15,000 red chili peppers.

Yeah.

还有四万六个回收的药瓶，它非常巨大，色彩极其绚丽，当你参加这个节日时，仿佛置身于梦境之中，你可能会说这些节日全都如此。

And 46,000 recycled medicine bottles, And it's huge, and it's so extremely colorful, and it looks like you're walking in the middle of a dream when you're at this this particular festival, and you might argue all of these festivals.

There's another cool thing I wanted to mention from this Zugong festival.

So they have an international competition for kids.

And there's one that's on display this year, and it's called Music Robot.

So that's based on a drawing by Jaden.

Jaden is an eight year old boy from The UK, and it's part of a special exhibition in Zugong where artisans bring to life or brought to life more than 6,000 children's drawings from 40 different countries.

There's apparently 2,400,000 people that live there and about a 100,000 people are employed in the lantern sector.

So it's it's big business down there, and a lot of the lanterns made from that city travel to international locations too.

That's why it's called the city of lanterns Yeah.

So what's especially striking this year in in terms of the scale and the fashion?

I mean, I'm really glad you mentioned the the the lantern makers because this year is all about a a combination of tradition and also modern culture from today's young Chinese because traditional lantern making, which is, of course, recognized as part of China's intangible cultural heritage, is very much alive everywhere in China.

你会看到工匠们手工弯曲竹条制成骨架，再用丝绸覆盖，并以传统方式绘制精美的图案。

You'll see artisans blending or rather bending bamboo frames by hand and stretching silk over them to make the lantern and also paint beautiful patterns that in a traditional way.

和几代人以来的做法完全一样。

Same way as how it's been done for generations.

但也有另一些人制作的灯笼融合了投影映射、运动传感器和动态照明系统，这正是特别有趣的地方。

But there's also and this is where it gets very interesting because there are also those who make lanterns layered with projection mapping, motion sensors, and dynamic lighting system.

So that's like high-tech slash traditional Chinese lantern.

That looked traditional at at first glance, but suddenly it moves, it shimmers, and I guess some of them talks too.

It reminds me of when I was a child going to a lantern festival.

And another thing I think is very also very interesting is how now, Festival, lantern fairs are blended with their local architecture.

For example, in the city of Dathong or Xi'an, they're known for their ancient architectures.

And if you've been to Dathong, for example, you know they have these ancient walls that are very, very thick that people are able to walk and even cycle and even have a car running on top of it.

So it's in the downtown area of Xi'an and it kind of like yeah.

So you can see, when I was in Dachong, I saw this before like some sort of a lady figure lantern standing on the wall.

It looks like if you are standing beneath the wall, it looks like the lady is looking at you and greeting you.

你知道吗，今年在中国北方的山西省大同市也举办了类似活动。

Know, this year, also in Datong City in Shanxi Province in North Northern China.

organizers 在城市的历史城墙旁布置了46个巨大的灯笼装置，展示的是2025年热门动画《无人》中的角色。

So the it was along the city's historic walls where the organizers set up 46 massive lantern displays featuring characters from the 2025 hit animation Nobody.

Well, I think in Chinese, it's called Oh.

这部非常非常受欢迎的动画。

The very Very cart animation.

Yeah.

Little little spirits or yeah.

Spirits in Chinese mythology is being adapted into lanterns.

And then there's another series featuring the playful plushies plushie I IP called family.

So that's a Wuhan based Wuhan dialect inspired plush toy IP.

So you see now, it's we are seeing a striking mix of tradition with contemporary culture.

不再只是传统的中国仕女向你招手，各种中国动画角色和新兴的年轻IP也纷纷登场。

Instead of just having traditional Chinese ladies waving at you, we see all different kind of Chinese animation figures and and young IPs showing up too.

是的。

Yeah.

我昨天又看了很多视频，我觉得英国游客在其中一个视频里如此震撼，正是因为西方文化中我所知道的几乎没有类似的东西。

I I again, I was watching a bunch of videos yesterday because and I think this is the reason why The UK visitors in in one that I watched were just so blown away is because we don't really have anything like this in Western culture that I know of.

我的意思是，我知道世界各地其他地方也庆祝中国元宵节，我看过加拿大卡尔加里的一个，但我本该反过来看的，因为我先看了自贡的，我觉得那可能是世界上最好的。

I mean, I know that they celebrate the Chinese Lantern Festival in other countries around the world, and I watched one from Calgary in in Canada, but I should have watched it the other way around because I watched the one from Zigong first, which is I think it might be the best in the world.

And the characters that they used, I mean, they're just characters that are gonna make everybody feel excited too.

It makes it more interactive for the kids.

And also speaking of about interaction, you can also make your own lanterns.

例如，在许多博物馆或灯会现场举办的工作坊中，许多城市都为家庭提供了动手参与的机会。

For example, in a lot of workshops launched in museums or at the fair itself, in a lot of cities, There are workshops for especially families to get their hands on.

They have this semi finished lanterns so that they can assemble, decorate, and light lanterns themselves.

And then walk outside and catch a drone show because drones are now you know, think in many parts of the world, and it's true here in China too, the the fireworks performances are a aplenty perhaps during the the New Year's time.

But drones are now oftentimes replacing fireworks in a lot of different cities, and these are just as impressive, the drone shows.
