It is all over tech media right now, and it's capturing the imagination of developers and entrepreneurs.

And like I said a moment ago, even city governments are paying attention too.

But before we all quit our day jobs to become lobster farmers or AI developers, I suppose, there is a catch and it's a big one.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology just issued a security warning flagging potential data leaks if these claws aren't handled properly.

It's very exciting, and it's also equally terrifying.

Let's start by learning about what it is, what's OpenClaw, who created it, who is this person, and what's it all about.

OpenClaw is an autonomous digital assistant rather than a prompt driven large language model as the one that we usually use, the ChatGPT or DeepSeek.

So, it can be thought of as, these chat chatbots can be thought of as as a super brain.

This brain has read an enormous number of books and it knows basic a little bit about almost everything.

When you ask the question, it can usually give you a very polished answer, but it has one major limitation.

It cannot act.

So the OpenClaw, is different.

It's not just a brain.

It's a brain with hands and feet.

You can think of as a very obedient digital assistant that lives inside your computer twenty four hours a day, and let's say if you ask for advice, you can give it a direct instruction, like book me a ticket for on Friday night and get the best seat available and then it will actually do it, search for the movie for the your location and then actually book the ticket and maybe until the step of you start to pay for it.

我理解的区别是，ChatGPT、Claude、DeepSeek这些都运行在大型科技公司控制的环境中。

The difference that I understand it to be is that ChatGPT, Cload, DeepSeek, those operate in environments that are controlled by big tech companies.

是的。

Mhmm.

OpenClaw是属于你的。

OpenClaw is yours Yeah.

And yours alone.

And just like Yushun just explained, imagine that you're rich and famous and you have a personal assistant.

You hired this person.

You give them access to your credit cards, your bank accounts, and because you trust them, and they are able to do all of those things for you.

Let's talk more about this little lobster and why it's so cool.

And also I think in not only that, like, for ChatGPT, we need sort of a website.

We log on to that website on an app so that I can talk to that AI assistant as we often call it.

But OpenClaw is that I I think it also require you to understand some language about coding because that's how, first of all, you install it basically onto your computer.

And then I think another feature that's making OpenClaw such a big thing in the tech world is because it's open source, meaning that anyone can start peeking under the hood at this code, and anyone can customize their own claw as their own wish.

So that's why everybody is talking about it, especially here in China.

This was launched in I mean, it's getting all the attention around the world right now, but it was launched in November.

Who built this?

It's a guy called Peter Steinberger from Austria.

He's been working in the tech world for the past over one deck one decade or two.

And he worked in a company that doing processing PDF tools in previously, and then he retired because that company was acquired by another big tech company.

And then after he retired, over a weekend later in 2025, he came up with this idea of having a perfect AI assistant and doing everything for me.

And so he created OpenClaw basically over that weekend.

Unbelievable.

And I think he's taken a position.

So what has the response been from individuals and businesses and from the government?

Well, since this worldwide launch last November, you know, this agent has just in a few months amassed over two two and fifty thousand stars representing saves and interest from users all over the world on web based software collaboration platform, GitHub, making it the most starred project on that platform.

And then coming over here in China, it went viral in China really in the beginning of this month, of this year, when people starting having this term raising your lobster, basically, referring to, you know, installing, training, and using OpenClaw simply because the the icon of that.

The icon is a little cute little lobster.

So but unlike, you know, these kind of browser based AI tools like DeepSeek and JGPT, OpenClaw requires some more technical setup as we just mentioned it.

So making it less accessible to general users, but a lot of people will think that I cannot be left behind in this new wave of using this top, level AI.

The latest, greatest thing.

很多人在网上询问他人，或者找懂行的人帮他们在电脑上安装这类工具。

So many people are asking people online or asking people who know how to do it to install these kind of, tools in their computer.

因此在3月6日，近一千人排着队站在腾讯——这家中国大型科技公司位于深圳的总部外，带着笔记本电脑和硬盘，等待工程师免费为他们安装OpenClaw。

So on March 6, nearly 1,000 people lined up outside Tencent, which is a a Chinese tech huge tech company in Shenzhen's headquarters carrying laptops and hard drives waiting for engineers to install their OpenClaw for free.

他们这样做的原因，我想从一个对技术一无所知的人的角度来解释，而我就是这样的一个人。

Now the reason they did that, and I want to explain this from the point of view of someone who knows really nothing about tech, and that's me.

这不是一个你可以下载到手机上的应用。

This is not an app that you download onto your phone.

你不能去应用商店搜索OpenClaw然后下载它。

You do not go to the App Store and search OpenClaw and then download it.

I know that because that's the first thing I did.

Now on the website, immediately, you're met with something that says quick start, and there's a copy button.

But the I don't right from there, I'm confused because I don't know what that is.

It's a bunch of letters mixed together, and then you have to copy that and paste that into your hard drive somewhere.

But this is the point that Yushun, I think, was making is that, you know, people were standing outside of Tencent's headquarters in Shenzhen, like, please install this on my computer because I don't know how to do it.

如果你不懂技术，那你肯定需要一点帮助，而且肯定会立刻感到困惑，我觉得是这样。

And if you're not tech savvy, then you're going to need a little bit of help, and you're going to be immediately confused, I would think.

And, also, I think, on some level, some people are paying others who are more have this knowledge about coding, about technology in China for paying to install OpenClaw, for example, services, they can with the price ranging from 100 yuan, that's about 14 US dollars, for for remote tech support to even 1,500 yuan.

That's over 200 US dollars for in person services.

So they can set up debugging and also use have some basic user guidance.

So basically, teach you hands on about how to use OpenClaw.

This has been so I mean, this is a new business Yeah.

That came out of nowhere, and some service provider providers claim that they've made so much money as much as 260,000 yuan.

That's about $38,000 in just a few days.

Because people don't know how to set it up and they want it to be set up properly, and they don't mind spending the money asking someone, paying someone to do it for them.

And, a lot of these Chinese tech firms are also trying to catch up this trend.

On March 9, Tencent first of all launched an OpenClaw like product like called Workbuddy, while Bydance rolled out ArcClaw, a ready to use cloud based version of OpenClaw, which means that I think they don't need you to insert some code into a computer.

You can just use, a platform that they have developed for you.

So that is an app that you can download?

And then smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi also began small scale testing of its own MiClaw service recently.

I've seen some of the videos of these influencers or vloggers starting to make with using these a AI or OpenClaw liked product.

Mhmm.

And also, I think you can also sort of having having it customized personalities.

Like, if you prefer like a bossy assistant or do you like assistant with a sense of humor, I think these I don't know.

The the the model, the system behind it will sort of also talking to you in that personality as well.

And I think before you can talk to OpenClaw to your AI assistant, you need to do some sort of linking.

And also, you need to link these two systems with that messaging system so that they can form a sort of ecosystem on your computer.

And that's why the setup is quite complicated.

And that's also one of the, I think, different points between OpenClaw and other, like, large language models because they have a huge memory.

Basically, they will not forget the persona that that you give them.

Because when we're using these chatbots, they probably will just refresh their memory every time that you start a new window to talk to them.

But this OpenClaw, they can't remember everything that you said to it because it's actually in your computer, and then they will remember their persona and starting to do that over and over again and keeping using that persona.

Even though I think I watched that video saying that the user is saying you are having that kind of habit of always saying that word after your sentence.

And it was remembered in their, like, I think the deepest memory, even though that he said, now, clean all like, don't forget everything that I said to you.

I think they are one among one of the first in China that offered policies to support the use of OpenClaw, and they offered a lot of support.

And now the government of Longgang is encouraging platforms to establish, quote, unquote, lobster service zones to help developers with free OpenClaw deployment services.

And they are also offering subsidies for up to 2,000,000 yuan for enterprises if they contribute to code or develop what they call skill packages because the skills, there are sort of the plug in softwares that you can install on OpenClaw Mhmm.

To do the things that you want them to do.

Because, again, opens it's open source, which means it's a it's like a blank canvas.

But also, I think here is also where the barrier exists is that we are thinking OpenClaw is a free open source platform, but in actually, when you are trying to launch some services on that, you still need to pay for a lot of services.
