To be honest, when I was a student, I only encountered labor related courses when I was in primary school, not in universities.

We should say, we're not talking about labor law or things like that.

We're talking about manual labor.

I mean, when I was in university, we didn't and actually, I checked before the show today to see if Canada offered any of these types of hands on classes, and the answer is generally no.

I think that's also reflecting how I think, worthy that some of these vocational education, institutes, they are offering the courses that some of these college students are also wanting to get.

So I think, yeah, that's also becoming one of the very popular electives on these Chinese university campuses.

Right?

Where getting a seat in some classes now feels like winning a lottery because you need to I think some of the because in my university, you need to even get up really early or stay up really late to to get that one spot of that elective course.

So here's one example.

Nothing too fancy.

You can learn how to bake fried rice or some chicken or some lamb, things like that, some different dishes, and they only have room for about 36 students, but the applicants exceeded 300.

So for every seat, that means, if my math is correct, there are about, what, ten, nine, eight people competing for that one seat.

Meaning that only one in 10 gets in.

北京师范大学有一门实践课。

Beijing Normal University, they have a hands on class.

Baking is one.

Coffee making is also very competitive, and they fill up really, really, really quickly.

如果热门课程，注册时间是上午10点，那你最好10点准时到场，否则根本抢不到位置。

If if the popular classes you have to so if registration is at 10AM, you you better be there at 10AM or you're not getting gonna get a spot in one of these places.

Before doing the show and doing all the research, I thought the classes are kinda like goofy around on There it is.

Yes, because I have attended some of the courses when I was in college but not in the college campus.

And there were, I think, flower arrangement and some certain type of Chinese painting, calligraphy classes, and also traditional Chinese music instrument classes.

But, again, goofing around, it was not serious for me at that time.

But many of these classes, they are quite serious.

When we're talking about baking, when we're talking about cooking, Steve said, oh, not not anything fancy.

And these classes are for real.

I'm surprised.

I thought you were going to say, Niu Hong Lin.

Mhmm.

I thought Yushun was gonna be in full support of this type of thing, and I thought, Niu Hong Lin, you were gonna be dead against this.

Because these types of courses, they these are not groundbreaking courses.

你可以去市中心的任何一家烹饪班，选一个中国城市，学习如何制作猪肉松饭团或炒饭，或者去上一门机械课。

You can take you can go to a culinary class in downtown pick a city in China and learn how to bake some pork floss rice balls or some fried rice, or you can take a mechanics class.

这些课程本身并不新颖，但如今这些课程的学分可以计入大学学位了。

So the courses aren't new, but these classes now count towards your university degree.

This is where I thought there might be a little bit of debate about this.

I think I get your assumption about me because I am usually all for practical, make good use of your time.

If you're a college student, you should be learning instead of playing around.

But I think for this, in this case, it's a little bit different because we're living in a very, very digital age.

A lot of things are losing their meanings in the real world.

You really do not have to cook because you can order all the time.

You do not have to fix your car because there are people helping you doing that.

But especially for the young minds, being able to have these hands on experience, in my opinion, would give you that connection between yourself and the real world.

One, you're able to do something concrete, even if it's an ugly pottery cap that you will never use, that was my case, it still gives you a sense of reality in the real world.

更不用说，自己动手做这些事能让你基本了解事物是如何运作的，这样当你发现有人用Photoshop来修车却向你收取巨额费用时，你就能察觉到不对劲。

Not to mention that being able to do that by yourself give you a basic knowledge of how things are done so that if you find a Photoshop that is trying to fix your car but charging you a much bigger amount, much bigger bill, you would be able to notice that.

I think what really surprises me is that, first of all, these schools are offering more diversified options no matter what major you are in.

For example, when no matter you are studying mathematics or English, you can still apply for the elective that help you to cook or, learn about car maintenance.

这是其中一点。

That's one thing.

That's not a stick to whatever that liberal art or, like, philosophy major that you're actually studying.

另一个是，我认为这关乎学生目前的态度，或者说这种态度正在发生变化，因为正如你所说，以前这些课程存在时，人们只是在瞎玩。

And another one is that I think is about the attitudes that students are having right now or we can say changing because, you know, only you were saying that back then you have these kind of classes, but people are just goofing around.

I think it's actually depending on the attitude of the students.

如果学生只想瞎玩，那么这些课程的设计就是让他们瞎玩的。

If the students will like to goof around, then these classes are designed for them to goof around.

但如果这些课程和这些学生都希望从中真正学到一些东西，并认为这对他们的生活或职业将非常有用呢？

But what if these classes are and these students want to actually learn something from this and they think it is will be really useful for their no matter their life or their career.

我同意。

I agree.

它们可以非常有用。

They can be very useful.

I think it I agree.

认为这些课程只是瞎玩的课程，这种说法完全是轻视的。

I think it's totally dismissive to say that these are goofing around classes.

我觉得这对这些课程的老师不尊重，也对选修这些课程的学生不尊重，因为这些是能让人受益的实际生活技能。

I I find that disrespectful to the teachers in these classes, and I find it disrespectful to the students who are taking these classes because these are practical life skills that can be taken away.

为什么这些课程在学生中变得如此受欢迎？

Why these classes have become so popular with students?

因为，终于有了他们在大学里能用上的技能。

Because, finally, a skill they can use from university.

You know, a a group of people, a generation that grew up in a digital era and all they've known is smartphones and screens and social media, and it doesn't matter what it is in my opinion.

Here in China, we encourage even younger kids to have their hands experience when it comes to life skills.

真正去田里采摘蔬菜、水果之类的。

To really go to the field and pick up, like, vegetable or fruit or something.

我认为这也是为什么这些大学生觉得这是一个难得的机会。

And I think that is also why these university students, they are thinking it is an opportunity for them to actually get the chance.

并不是说为了未来的职业技能或者通过参加这些课程赚很多钱，而是有机会接触自己学业或生活中另一个领域，这也是一件好事。

Not really about like, you know, I will gain this skill for my future career or earn a lot of money by attending to these classes, but having a chance to get in touch with another field of their maybe study or life is a good thing as well.

Yes.

我以前也没有以积极的方式有过这种经历。

I also didn't have this experience quite in a positive light.

但小时候，我学过一点木工，比如把木头锯开再拼起来，做些模型。

But when I was a kid, I learned to do a little bit woodwork, you know, saw them apart and stick them together, make a model of something.

It used to be usually, I was very good at academic kind of performing.

But for that one, I was I was really bad at it.

I I stick them onto the wrong angle and also to the wrong fabric.

But some of my classmates who are very not that obvious, if you know what I'm talking about, in the class, those who are easily unseen in the class, those people, some of them are they were shining in those classes.

They were making the most beautiful wood model I've ever seen, and I think it is a quite good experience for them, and it's a good chance to know something about yourself that you would otherwise never get to know.

I think that's a great point because having the classes a part of the curriculum at the university allows the students it's an easier barrier to entry.

Mean, sure, if they are available in downtown big city here or small town there, that's one thing.

但到底有多少人会真正去报名参加呢？

But how many people actually go and sign up for those?

Because it takes your weekend time, and it takes extra searching and effort.

但当它在校园内时，是的，我觉得这是件好事。

But when it's on campus, yeah, I think this is a great thing.

我们是否同意这是件好事？

Do we agree that it's a good thing?

Are we agreeing this?

Yes, we are.

但就没有问题吗？

But is there no problem?

当然，问题是有的。

Of course, there are problems.

例如，如果一个教室只能容纳30名学生，那一定是因为他们没有足够的工具让其他学生尝试烹饪或烘焙。

For example, if a classroom can only fill 30 students, it must be because they do not have enough tool for other students to try cooking or baking.

当玉顺说这些选修课与你的专业关联不大，反而能让你更好地认识自己时，确实如此。

And also when Yushun said, oh, it's a great thing that these electives are not too connected or related to your major, you would be able to discover yourself.

但对另一些人来说，他们希望找一些既能动手实践、又与专业有一定关联的课程，以便为未来的职业发展积累其他经验。

But for some others, they want something that they can try hands on, but also kinda related to their major, so they can have other experience that might be useful in their working future career.

所以还有很多事情需要去摸索。

So there are still many things to figure out.

我认为这是一个不错的起点，但在大学里，这些实践类课程未来肯定会有更广阔的发展前景。

I think it's a good starting point, but we can definitely see a more prosperous future when it comes to these hands on courses in universities.

Man, I couldn't eat blueberries for like a year.

Really, ruin them for me every day, all day.

你给了我一些灵感，以后可以毁掉我孩子们的某些爱好。

Giving me ideas to ruin certain hobbies of my kids in the future.

One of the favorite things that I have with Chinese restaurants is that when you enter the restaurant, sit aside a table, hot water would appear like magic.

That was the luxury I didn't have restaurants in Europe, in America, and in other countries.

That was a confusing point when I first moved to China.

Why is this water hot?

It's nice.

It's comfortable.

But that is changing, but not to a direction that I hate.

What's changing is that we see somehow other types of water on the table now.

In an increasing number of these restaurants, what lands on table is a tall glass of lemon water and sometimes it's cucumber slices floating inside giving you another I like that.

Freshness in the water.

有时偶尔还会有一些更具地方特色的饮品，比如北京夏天的绿豆汤，四川火锅店的草本茶，以及中国南方的罗汉果茶。

Sometimes also, occasionally, even something more regional, mung bean soup in Beijing summers, and also herbal tea in Sichuan hot pot spots, and also Luohang guo tea in Southern China.

在这些地区，餐厅通常会提供一些当地特色小吃或饮品。

Some of these regions, they will just offer some local delicacy or drinks to, in these kind of restaurants.
