BBC Sounds,

BBC Sounds, music, radio, podcasts.

Speaker 1

你好。

Hello.

Speaker 1

Welcome to the podcast of Shortcuts.

Speaker 1

Today's episode is about earth, a grounding episode about making it through whatever winter has to throw at us, and thriving on the other side.

Speaker 1

这里是《Shortcuts》。

This is Shortcuts.

Speaker 2

I think I mean, it's not that I think I I know we're moving towards a world of of no glaciers.

Speaker 1

Brief encounters.

Speaker 0

Well, there's yellow rattle, of course.

Speaker 1

Tree stories.

Speaker 0

We have the blue, the the small blue.

Speaker 0

Radio adventures.

Speaker 0

There's blue butterflies.

Speaker 0

The blue goo.

Speaker 0

And found sound.

Speaker 0

Sometimes we have the Camberwell beauty here as well.

Speaker 1

今天。

Today.

Speaker 3

Can I stay in this moment where the garden is right now?

Speaker 3

不行。

You can't.

Speaker 3

You have to breathe it in right then.

Speaker 1

大地。

Earth.

Speaker 2

What we are listening when we listen to to the ice melting is basically, in theory, a sound that maybe in the future will become extinct.

Speaker 0

And a lot of people said to me, no.

Speaker 0

You're going to move away.

Speaker 0

You can't manage all on your own out here.

Speaker 0

But in fact, the garden has really saved me.

Speaker 1

For farmers and gardeners, the beginning of winter is a time to clear the remnants of last year's plants and prepare for those to come in the spring.

Speaker 1

It means cutting back the stalks, leaving roots to decompose and release nutrients, spreading compost and laying straw or mulch.

Speaker 1

It's a chance to take stock of all the growth and change of the summer, and give your garden a chance to rest.

Speaker 1

For one gardener, wintering the garden this year also meant saying goodbye to more than just her garden.

Speaker 1

As she prepares to move away, she passes along her home and her garden to a close friend with whom she used to work on a farm.

Speaker 3

Okay.

Speaker 3

This is the sunniest plot.

Speaker 3

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 3

Hands down, sunniest plot.

Speaker 3

The sun kinda comes, like, from here and hits here first.

Speaker 3

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 3

This backstrip, the least sunniest.

Speaker 3

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 3

Great.

Speaker 3

This was my mess, which is beets, carrots that I did not thin, and so Hot mess.

Speaker 3

Mess.

Speaker 3

Short Oh, and then this is a was meant to be a perennial area, but it's kind of been chaotic.

Speaker 3

The chives do super well.

Speaker 3

Okay.

Speaker 3

So the chives will grow back a 100%.

Speaker 3

Also, oregano will.

Speaker 3

When I came here, this was nothing.

Speaker 3

There was dirt here.

Speaker 3

There was nothing back there.

Speaker 3

This was this broken down plot.

Speaker 3

The chives are the only thing that has stayed.

Speaker 3

That's why I'm saying they will not die.

Speaker 3

Those chives will be here till the zombie apocalypse.

Speaker 3

And this wasn't even like, this was this broken down plot my neighbors had been growing garlic in.

Speaker 3

So I had two little plots, and then the next year, I added that back row.

Speaker 3

I don't know what else.

Speaker 3

Do you want any of this arugula?

Speaker 3

Do you think it would be bad?

Speaker 3

Take a munch.

Speaker 3

Let me know.

Speaker 0

It's okay.

Speaker 3

Is it worth it?

Speaker 3

Or should I just compost it?

Speaker 0

I think I think just compost it.

Speaker 0

好。

Okay.

Speaker 4

I think You gotta know when to let go.

Speaker 3

Gotta know when to let go.

Speaker 3

Gotta know when to let go

Speaker 4

of arugula.

Speaker 4

Sometimes arugula just

Speaker 3

You gotta know when to let go of It's done.

Speaker 3

Your home and your garden.

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

How are you feeling about letting go?

Speaker 0

我?

Me?

Speaker 0

我

I

Speaker 4

think you're doing pretty well.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

我

I

Speaker 0

think so.

Speaker 3

If you think of like the beginning of a farm season in April, and when I mean, that's one of our like first tasks together was like seeding.

Speaker 3

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

And you're putting what is this?

Speaker 3

Dino kale?

Speaker 3

Lacinato.

Speaker 3

I could picture a Lacinato kale seed.

Speaker 3

Like this tiny thing, and then you water it, and you watch it grow.

Speaker 3

And then sometimes, it can almost like lose its majesty, the change.

Speaker 3

Because you're not just like, woah.

Speaker 3

Oh my god.

Speaker 3

This thing has grown.

Speaker 3

But I think watching that like subtlety over time is, like, one of my absolute favorite things about, like, working with plants and working Yeah.

Speaker 3

In farming and gardening.

Speaker 3

And I think that's how I change.

Speaker 3

And I think it seems like that's how you change.

Speaker 3

It's like it happened so slowly.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

Like, don't think I was surprised by noticing that.

Speaker 4

Just like you're not surprised when suddenly there's suddenly there's kale Yeah.

Speaker 4

Instead of just like dirt, you know, because you you you put it there.

Speaker 3

And there's so much effort.

Speaker 4

And there's so much effort.

Speaker 4

And like The sun.

Speaker 4

Something I think we often don't give ourselves enough credit for is the effort that goes change.

Speaker 0

改变

Change

Speaker 4

doesn't just happen, and we don't just like move cities and then boom, we've changed.

Speaker 3

I also feel like we've watched each other grow subtly for the time we've known each other.

Speaker 3

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 3

Just because I'm going and you're staying doesn't mean I'll change more or less.

Speaker 3

But I'm, like, excited to marvel at your change.

Speaker 3

There's times I've come back here, and I almost, like, try to take a little picture with my mind and say, like, can I stay in this moment where the garden is right now?

Speaker 3

And you can't.

Speaker 3

You have to breathe it in right then.

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

Just like, you know, nature doesn't stay stagnant.

Speaker 4

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

We're not supposed to either.

Speaker 4

This garden is gonna keep changing and changing and changing.

Speaker 4

And, like, even if things pop up year after year, you know, even if there's volunteer mint and volunteer strawflower and Yeah.

Speaker 4

Strawberries that are gonna overwinter, like,

Speaker 3

it's gonna look different.

Speaker 3

It's gonna look different.

Speaker 4

That's okay.

Speaker 4

How are you feeling about this grass patch?

Speaker 1

That's the chives.

Speaker 1

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 4

Oh my god.

Speaker 4

They're so overgrown.

Speaker 3

Are they?

Speaker 3

不是。

No.

Speaker 3

They're No.

Speaker 3

It is good to cut them back though.

Speaker 3

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 3

Should we cut them back?

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

This is the this is the chives that will never die.

Speaker 4

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

I do think it's good to to cut them back.

Speaker 3

It's getting cold, dude.

Speaker 3

It's getting cold.

Speaker 3

Winter.

Speaker 3

它正

It's

Speaker 4

really different.

Speaker 3

It looks really different.

Speaker 3

It's always a little I don't know.

Speaker 3

I love the activity of of wintering the garden and pulling back all the abundance and letting it rest for a little bit.

Speaker 4

I think there's something really fun about seeing a garden when it's not, like, in its beautiful stage.

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

你

You

Speaker 4

know?

Speaker 4

Like, seeing that, like,

Speaker 3

it can be beautiful at certain times of the year.

Speaker 4

And then it could also just look like not a whole lot at other times

Speaker 0

of the year, but

Speaker 3

it still has the ability to to to fluctuate back into its beautiful form.

Speaker 4

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

Just takes a little bit of work.

Speaker 3

Take a little a little bit of work and some time.

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

But I think maybe we just lay the compost and then lay the straw.

Speaker 3

And that's it.

Speaker 3

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 3

Do you think?

Speaker 3

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 3

What time is it?

Speaker 3

现在是

It is

Speaker 4

The sun is 03:52.

Speaker 1

That was made for us by Jules Bradley, an audio producer and farmer.

Speaker 1

And this is the first time she's done both of those things at the same time.

Speaker 2

You have to think in time frames of thousands of years, of tens of thousands of years, of hundreds of thousands of years.

Speaker 2

We, as humans can basically think in the order of years, decades, eventually a century.

Speaker 2

Once you start thinking beyond a century, then you inevitably start kind of feeling dizzy.

Speaker 2

Feeling cold or something.

Speaker 2

No?

Speaker 2

If we go to Antarctica, we take samples and then we analyze those samples, then it's like reading a book.

Speaker 2

Each each of the pages, each of the layers that we can analyze in the in the ice, it brings information about the story of the of the climate in the planet.

Speaker 2

What we're doing is going on a like a time machine.

Speaker 2

So the longest record that has been retried so far from Antarctica, it goes back 800,000 years.

Speaker 2

And it's a it's a very deep ice core.

Speaker 2

It it was drilled to beyond three kilometers.

Speaker 2

Near the interface with the with the bedrock, the ice is so compressed that eventually in a meter of ice you can have twenty thousand years.

Speaker 2

Ice that we get from the field, we get them as cylinders of ice, and then for depending on the kind of analysis that we perform, we cut the ice in in different shapes.

Speaker 2

I just loaded the ice, and what we have here is this device that we have created here at the British Antarctic Survey, which melts the ice at its contact between relatively warm melt plate, and when it touches the ice, melts the ice layer by layer.

Speaker 2

By analyzing the CO2 in the bubbles and then by analyzing the water molecule, we're able to reconstruct that there is a direct link between the amount of greenhouse gases, the amount of carbon dioxide, CO2, that we are inputting into the atmosphere and the temperature reaction that we will get.

Speaker 2

We know that we have inputted a lot of CO two, but then the temperatures are trying to catch up.

Speaker 2

Basically, because of these rules of the game, are able to sort of forecast or anticipate what will happen.

Speaker 2

We are inputting a lot of CO two, and the temperatures are coming up.

Speaker 2

But then, because of this green cycle, we know the effect of all of those greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Speaker 2

Who varies on there how the temperature is Dabiting up.

Speaker 2

Trying to check what can be tracked throughout this cycle.

Speaker 2

Of course, over the last eight hundred thousand years as a natural variability, but more recently, we can track that with our input of CO2 as a society way beyond the limits of what we have seen over the last eight hundred thousand years and that having devastating effects.

Speaker 2

I think, I mean, it's not that I think.

Speaker 2

I I know we're moving towards a world of of no glaciers.

Speaker 2

I don't even know if we if we still have time.

Speaker 2

We hope we have time, but it it could be that it's too late.

Speaker 2

What we are listening when we listen to to the ice melting is basically, in theory, a sound that maybe in the future will become extinct.

Speaker 2

So then if we keep going as we are going with increasing temperatures, burning more fossil fuels, eventually there will be a time in the planet where we we will melt the last bit of ice in the planet and then that will be the last time that that sound is heard.

Speaker 2

It's the sound of the past.

Speaker 1

That was Melt Tones by Anton Spice, and it featured Dr Dieter Tetzner, who's an ice core scientist in ice dynamics and paleoclimate at the British Antarctic Survey.

Speaker 1

All of the sounds were recorded by Anton at the British Antarctic Survey's ice core laboratory in Cambridge, mostly in the cold room, which is kept at minus 25 degrees Celsius.

Speaker 1

Thinking about the size and the speed and the scale of climate collapse that we're facing is utterly overwhelming to me.

Speaker 1

And I was told recently that civilization, in kind of more geological time terms, has not been around long enough to be called an era.

Speaker 1

It would be classified as an event.

Speaker 1

I think of human civilization as a singular catastrophic event on the planet.

Speaker 1

And at the moment, I'm writing a stand up show about prehistoric extinct charismatic megafauna.

Speaker 1

Not dinosaurs, I'm not basic.

Speaker 1

I'm talking big, strange mammals.

Speaker 1

And in particular, I'm interested in ten thousand, twenty thousand, thirty thousand years ago, when human beings, exactly the same as you or I in evolutionary terms, were living in a landscape we can barely imagine, full of gigantic predators and beasts and evolutionary hangovers from millions of years ago.

Speaker 1

And they lived through extreme climate change.

Speaker 1

And when I think about what we're up against, the unprecedented nature of it, the scale of it, the terror, thinking about our ancestors, the fact that they survived in such a harsh, difficult landscape for us to be here is one of the things that gives me hope.

Speaker 1

In 1973, Sue Trolle and her husband Lars bought a little house on the Danish island of Bornholm.

Speaker 1

Radio producer Rikke Houd went to meet her there.

Speaker 0

I'm in the house, the old farmhouse, which with a lot of mess and pictures and books.

Speaker 0

And, yeah, this has been my home for fifty years.

Speaker 0

It's a very lived in house, I think you could call it.

Speaker 0

When we bought it, you could see the house surrounded by fields, but now, of course, you can't really see the house because there's so many trees and things.

Speaker 0

But the plants rarely have right of way in this in this garden.

Speaker 0

I sometimes feel very much like the visitor.

Speaker 0

You can see it's like a little island in the middle of the fields, which are cultivated in the traditional way where they're sprayed and they're fertilized and and Two different worlds in a way.

Speaker 0

I think this is why I have so many birds in the garden in the summer and the spring because they fly over the fields and come into the garden, and especially migrating birds, they sort of rest for the day and find insects and what have you, and then they go on in the evening or the next day.

Speaker 0

It's encroaching on the house, the garden at the moment.

Speaker 0

Should we open the door and walk into your garden?

Speaker 0

Let's do that.

Speaker 0

This is the courtyard.

Speaker 0

Originally, it was totally free of plants, And now it's just full of plants and pots, and there's a good old mixture of everything.

Speaker 0

Gradually, the courtyard is getting smaller and smaller.

Speaker 0

So in the end, there'll just be one table there where we can sit.

Speaker 0

It snowed a bit, so there's snow on the bushes and it's very still, there's no wind, which is nice.

Speaker 0

And there are a few plants still flowering, but most of them are dying down now because of the winter and the autumn, so It's a crow going to bed.

Speaker 0

Can you hear it?

Speaker 0

Yeah?

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And we also have ravens in the back garden.

Speaker 0

They also chat away in the mornings.

Speaker 0

I think we have to go this way.

Speaker 0

I've noticed it.

Speaker 0

Can you smell it?

Speaker 0

对

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

There's some hyssop bushes here.

Speaker 0

I think that's probably what it is.

Speaker 0

A bit like going through a tunnel.

Speaker 0

是树。

Trees.

Speaker 0

Oh, trees.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So and we bought the house in 1973.

Speaker 0

There was nothing here when we came.

Speaker 0

And there were no trees or anything.

Speaker 0

There was no shelter either.

Speaker 0

We planted a lot of trees.

Speaker 0

As in my my husband was an entomologist, so he's very interested in insects.

Speaker 0

An expert in leafhoppers.

Speaker 0

He was very keen on growing plants that attracted insects and beetles and butterflies.

Speaker 0

There's the ocean.

Speaker 0

You can hear it?

Speaker 0

Now this now it's the neighbor he's shooting.

Speaker 0

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 0

I'm not quite sure what he's shooting at this time, but yeah.

Speaker 0

And so we sit out here in the summer and look at the sea and the flowers.

Speaker 0

It's a nice place.

Speaker 0

He got cancer and bone marrow cancer and died.

Speaker 0

Now it's almost seventeen years ago.

Speaker 0

And a lot of people said to me, no, you're going to move away.

Speaker 0

You can't manage all on your own out here.

Speaker 0

But in fact, the garden has really saved me.

Speaker 0

It's good to come out here if you've got problems or what have you, and just get your fingers into the soil.

Speaker 0

It's taught me also to take things slowly, because plants grow slowly, and if you plant a tree, it takes several years before it begins to look like a tree.

Speaker 0

So it's taught me to be patient and it's taught me to be tolerant as well.

Speaker 0

I mean, I don't really mind if a cabbage butterfly eats all my cabbage, because I think the butterfly is also beautiful.

Speaker 0

So, you know, you learn to live with what's there and accept that they have a right to live here as well.

Speaker 0

There's room for insects and hares and roe deer and all the other things that come into the garden.

Speaker 0

There are also mice, a lot of mice, field mice and headsponsmoose, I can't remember what it's called in English, it's a very pretty mouse.

Speaker 0

We get a lot of birds as well, different birds coming in, blue tits, and the blackbirds, and the green finches, and woodpeckers also, crossbills, they come and they go, bullfinches, hawfinches, they come as well in the winter.

Speaker 0

And there are also a lot of grasses, and also wasps, they're actually very useful.

Speaker 0

They're allowed to be there as well.

Speaker 0

Hoverflies and bumblebees, of course.

Speaker 0

Beetles, small yellow flowers, snapweeds, and small bell flowers, the wild snapdragons, white daisies, and cornflowers also.

Speaker 0

They're super.

Speaker 0

Well, there's yellow rattle, of course.

Speaker 0

We have the blue, the small blue, and we have various blue butterflies, the blue group, the Essex skipper, tortoiseshells, and red admirals, peacocks.

Speaker 0

Sometimes we have the Camberwell beauty here as well, and they come, and it's always a pleasure to have them in the garden.

Speaker 0

So, and hedgehogs, sometimes, if I'm lucky, I find a hedgehog in the garden.

Speaker 0

But I don't have so many here, because the garden is surrounded by fields, so it's difficult for them to come in.

Speaker 0

I wonder what he's shooting.

Speaker 0

There's something here.

Speaker 0

There's a flat bird.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

There are a lot of birds, and they're going to bed now.

Speaker 0

I'm not quite sure what that one is, actually.

Speaker 0

So and there are also a lot of pheasant here.

Speaker 0

They also start chatting at night, so, or in the evening when they're going to bed.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Maybe we should turn around whilst we can still see where we're walking.

Speaker 0

The blackbirds trying to catch you.

Speaker 1

Rikke told us, my first initiative to do this was the thought about spaces that are generous and unafraid and not excluding.

Speaker 1

Also, as a metaphor for what is happening in many places, to remind of the importance of wild patient gardens.

Speaker 1

She also told us that Sue says, many people who love grow to be old because they always look forward to spring.

Speaker 1

And it's something I think about often.

Speaker 1

You can cut all the flowers, but you cannot keep spring from coming.
