So I'm standing on the edge of this precipice, and I'm looking down with this feeling of vertigo.
My feet slip, rocks fall, and I'm plummeting to the ground.
I think I'm gonna die.
First thing I think of is lucid dreaming, as if if this was a dream, how could I get out of it?
The moment I have that, I realize I am in the dream.
Gravity stops.
砰。
Boom.
And I'm paused in mid air.
The realization gave me the option to fall or to float or to fly.
This is Shortcuts.
Brief encounters, true stories, radio adventures, and found sound.
Today, taking flight.
You really have a different sense of what is real.
You can be a superhero.
I'm not somebody who takes risks.
So it's quite extraordinary that I found myself jumping off a pier in a homemade helicopter.
I often dream about flying, and for some people, I think that means fear of falling or fear of going too fast or getting out of control.
But for me, it's just feeling exhilarated.
Like, finally, something wonderful and extraordinary is happening to me.
And my only problem in the dreams is sometimes I land quite gracefully, and then I can't get back in the sky.
And that is infuriating and so frustrating to me.
And I'm sorry if this seems like I'm bragging about my dreams, but I can't help myself.
The idea of flight has a special kind of freedom to it.
If only you could do it, you'd be superhuman and able to perform fantastic feats.
I suppose it's the flip side of being real.
It's about flying in the face of reality and saying, see see what I can do.

People bungee jump all the time, don't they?
People throw themselves out of planes.
There's there's, you know, nothing like that feeling of rushing through the air.
At the same time, you know, for me in a performance context, while I'm not just a bungee jumper or a parachutist, the eyes of the audience are on you.
And and you know that in some sense, this particular in this particular art form, in this particular skill, they are watching you in case you fall.
Now nobody wishes you illness, sickness and death and disaster but that is undoubtedly part of the draw of watching and to a certain extent the draw of performing even though I'm kind of faking it.
I have no desire to put myself in genuine danger And yet I and yet the reality is dangerous.
At the moment of the catch, there is there is only one place your brain is, and it's right here, right now.
And that, you know, hearing that, feeling that bag, you're lucky enough to have the lights behind and get a bit chalk dust, you know, that your brain just soaks all these things up.
And and there, you do really have the you really have a different sense of what is real.
You can be you can be a superhero.
There are many, hooks.
I mean, there are some kind of fairly obvious ones, which you might not realise at the time but people tell you and you go oh yeah, you know your body releases lots of endorphins, your body releases lots of serotonin and lots of exciting chemicals that make you high and challenged and bereft when you come down.
You know, when I was younger and used to think that these things are more profound than perhaps they are, I used to sort of liken it to a drug taking experience.
There's a lot of anticipation, a lot of getting ready.
Then something brilliant happens that you can't quite remember in a very short period of time.
And then afterwards you just have the memory that it was all good.
And then after that everything just seems very pale.
I've had a long conversation with a friend about this who has theories about those people that choose to do circus and their mental health and their possible mania and depressions.
And and I and as I spoke to him, I I sort of engaged with things that I hadn't perhaps thought about before.
Thought actually yeah that particular act I do is all about pain and suffering and that other act that is similar is all about jubilation and release.
Maybe I am many depressors.
Know, ping!
I'm not sure that I am, to be honest.
But in my head, I kind of can fly.
I know I can't fly, but there's something about being able to say that this is what I do that plugs into one's sense of self, to my sense of self and allows me to be hyper normal, I think.
When you watch an acrobat, it really seems like they're flinging themselves with wild abandon.
And it's strange to think that in the midst of everything, they're calmly focusing on controlled technique, especially considering that there's only two options, soaring triumphantly or falling flat on your face.
And in some ways, think the audience would be happy with either.
It's similar to that moment between being heckled on stage and your response.
And by that, I mean that as a stand up, I am as brave as a trapeze artist.
The anticipation of the crowd.
The endless second between someone shouting out, You're not funny!
Where your brain finds the best possible response.
Your mom's not funny!
There are only two options, failure or triumph.
Either you fly or you fall.
I am a cautious person naturally.
I'm not somebody who takes risks.
So it's quite extraordinary that I found myself jumping off a pier in a homemade helicopter.
I was taking part in something called the Worthing Birdman, which is basically where people who have no knowledge of how to build an aircraft go down to their sheds and build some sort of homemade contraption to try and fly off Worthing Pier.
And you're supposed to fly 100 meters.
Think if you fly 100 meters you get a big cash prize but I don't think anyone's ever achieved it.
My aircraft was made by a man called Joel who I was teamed up to jump with and he'd built this aircraft, It was a homemade helicopter.
It was basically made of guttering and sort of plastic sheetings, sort of lightweight plastic sheeting, like what you'd use as backing on a picture frame or something like that.
I was dressed as a damsel in distress, and he was dressed as Rambo.
And and his dad was part of it, but he didn't jump with us, but he was dressed as a Nazi.
And nobody ever explained to me why that was.
Well, you have to do this two minute sketch before you jump, and it's all projected on the massive screen so that everybody can watch it.
What happened was the Nazi took me hostage and then Rambo ran up the ramp, knocked out the Nazi, who was his dad, so it was a bit weird.
And then me and Rambo got into the helicopter and then the idea was we'd fly off.
这个
This
novelty element of it kind of takes away how serious it is.
You think it's a bit of fun and it's not until you like, leave the edge of the pier and you feel that horrible feeling, you know, like when your stomach goes up into your your neck.
And I I distinctly remember it was a lot longer than I thought you could.
I had memories as I was falling.
Like, it was honestly enough time to sort of start a swear word, end a swear word, and then start another swear word, and that's a long time to fall.
You've got the roaring of the crowd and the glinting of the light on the water and the air rushing against your face and then suddenly you hit the water and it just goes to silence and darkness and it's freezing cold and you're just sinking and and the difference between falling and sinking is so pronounced, it's just so slow and I had that horrible disorientated feeling that you have where you don't know which way is up because you saw I went in a sort of weird angle and I didn't know where the top was and where the bottom was.
So I didn't know where to sort of start swimming towards.
And that was kind of amazing for a split second and then you start to panic a bit because you don't know where you are and it's that panicking feeling of being stuck somewhere and knowing you have to get out of it.
Because I jumped in this night dress, as I'd hit the water the the night dress is sort of risen up and I was sort of like eschatology, was sort of stuck in a sack underwater and I couldn't get out of it and it was really scary because I was trying to fight my way out.
And I remember being really, rather than like panicky, remember being really ticked off, like well somebody's gonna get in trouble for this, like who, who's gonna get in trouble for it but suddenly just as I began to really panic, to be, I began to think I'm gonna, oh this is it, this is an awful novelty way to die, like this is one of the worst deaths ever recorded and you know, everybody's watched this.
This is terrible.
I remember I felt the unmistakable hand of Rambo grab me by the shoulder and and pull me upwards.
The first thing I heard when I got out of water was I heard someone shout, get her a spinal board.
And the thing is there's never a good time to hear the phrase, get her a spinal board.
Even if the lead up question is, what do you think Holly will want for Christmas?
You know, like, don't get me a spine get just get me vouchers.
But I didn't know why they were shouting, get her a spinal board, and I was really confused.
And then I looked down and I looked at my arm.
Basically, there was no elbow.
There was nothing connecting the lower bit of my arm to the upper bit of my arm apart from just skin.
There was no blood or anything.
Was just floating sort of free form and it was like a kind of bone nunchuck.
There's two nurses and they always have to do this if you're conscious.
They ask you how how did this happen.
So they were like, Holly, tell us how did this happen?
And I was lying there and I was like, okay.
I was being taken hostage by a Nazi and then Rambo saved me and we got in a helicopter and we flew away but the helicopter crashed.
And I I just didn't remember their faces like, I think we have someone with a serious head injury here.
Comedian Holly Walsh.
What I like about Holly's story is that the reality seems like a bizarre dream.
When she talks about hitting the water and not knowing what was up or down, the excitement of weightlessness quickly becomes panic and feeling out of control.
The whole of the Worthing Birdman competition is about trying to master and control the impossible, to jump off and take flight where literally no one has ever succeeded in the past.
Each new competitor hopes that their ridiculous, ambitious contraption will defy reality.
The dream of flight never goes away.
A vast majority of my lucid dreams begin with me balancing on the edge of something.
With me about to fall, with me about to enter some sort of flight into the unknown.
This means that if I do become mindful enough to spot that dream so I know that I'm dreaming, a lot of my lucid dreams open with falling in flight.
So one of the first things I do in my lucid dreams is fly.
The two most common areas that people wanna explore once they start lucid dreaming are firstly sex and second flying.
And these are both to do with freedom.
You know, if you suddenly realize right now that the reality you're experiencing was actually a projection of your own mind and that all of the norms of society and morals are out the window.
A lot of people explore their sexuality.
Once they've done that, the next thing they explore is flying.
Now why flight?
Why would flight be one of the first thing that people wanna explore in their lucid dreams?
I think it's to do with the fact that naturally propelled flight is one of the few impossibilities of the human.
And to do that is not only breaking through a seeming impossibility, but it's also such a feeling of freedom because you realize that, god, if I can fly in my lucid dreams, I can do anything because flying is that one impossibility that I will never be able to do in the waking state.
And once you have that first experience of flight in the lucid dream, your waking state becomes changed.
Very often, the lucid dream to me actually feels more real than this, which is kind of a strange thing to say.
If we were to interact with people in the waking state as we do in the lucid dreams, to see them all as aspects of our own psyche, then we'd naturally be kinder to people.
So actually, if we could enter into this as a little bit more dreamlike, the world would be a better place, I think.
I'm at the foot of the ladder.
I'm gonna step off the land now.
That's one small step for man.
Our last story is pulled out of the archive of a radio program from the United States Radiolab, where huge ideas are made intimate and personal.
And if you haven't heard it, I strongly recommend it.
This is the story behind the golden record, a grand, ambitious, fantastic project put together by the American scientist Carl Sagan, a man who specialized in helping abstract, difficult ideas capture people's imaginations.
Essentially, golden record was the wonderfully romantic idea of sending out a speculative mixtape to sum up humanity to the universe and hoping that it will fall in love with us.
Here, Carl Sagan's wife, Andrean, is interviewed in her garden, sitting in the same spot that her husband Carl Sagan used to sit.
We felt, first of all, that this was a kind of sacred trust, that here we were, half a dozen very flawed human beings with huge huge holes in our knowledge of all of these subjects, building a cultural Noah's Ark.
It was a chance to tell something of what life on earth was like to beings of perhaps a thousand million years from now.
Because the Voyager engineers were saying this record will have a shelf life of a billion years.
If that didn't raise goosebumps, then you'd have to be made of wood.
It was also the the season that Carl Sagan and I fell so madly in love with each other.
And here we were taking on this mythic challenge and knowing that before it was done, two spacecraft would lift off from the planet Earth, moving at an average speed of 35,000 miles an hour for the next thousand million years.
And on it would be a kiss, a mother's first words to her newborn baby.
Come on now.

Beethoven, greetings in the 59 most populous human languages.

Shalom.
你好。
Hello
from the children of planet Earth.
As well as one non human language, the greetings of the humpback whales.
And it was a sacred undertaking because it was saying, we wanna be citizens of the cosmos.
We want you to know about us.
Tell me about the moment you fell in love with Carl Sagan.
You said it was during the Voyager compilation.
是的。
Yes.
没错。
It was.
It was on 06/01/1977.
I had been looking for some time for that piece of Chinese music that we could put on the Voyager record and not feel like idiots for having done so.
And I was very excited because I'd finally found a ethnomusicologist composer at Columbia University who told me without a moment's hesitation that this piece Flowing Streams, which was represented to me as one of the oldest pieces of Chinese music, 2,500 years old, was the piece we should put on the record.
So I called Carl who was traveling.
He was in Tucson, Arizona giving a talk.
And we had been alone many times during the making of the record and as friends for three years.
And neither of us had ever said anything to the other.
We were both involved with other people.
We'd had these wonderful, soaring conversations.
But we had both been completely just professional about everything and his friends.
And he wasn't there, left a message.
Hour later, phone rings, pick up the phone and I hear this wonderful voice.
And he said, I get back to my hotel room and I find this message and it says, Annie called.
And I say to myself, why didn't you leave me this message ten years ago?
And my heart completely skipped a beat.
I can still remember it so perfectly.
And I said, For keeps?
And he said, You mean get married?
And I said, Yes.
And, we had never kissed.
We had never, you know, even had any kind of personal discussion before.
We both hung up the phone and I just screamed out loud.
I remember it so well because it was this great Eureka moment.
It was just like a scientific discovery.
And then the phone rang and I was thinking, you know, like and the phone rang and it was Carl and he said, I just wanna make sure that really happened.
We're getting married.
Right?
And I said, Yeah.
We're getting married.
He said, Okay.
Just wanted to make sure.
And the spacecraft lifted off on August 20.
And August 22, we told everyone involved, and we were together from that moment until his death in 1996 in December.
Wow.
Talk about romantic.
My god.
It's so romantic.
And part of my feeling about Voyager, obviously, and part of what I was feeling in the recording of my brain waves, my heart, my eyes, everything in that meditation on the record.
I had asked Karl whether or not it would be possible to compress the impulses in one's brain and nervous system into sound and then put that sound on the record and then think that perhaps the extraterrestrials of the future would be able to reconstitute that data into thought.
And he looked at me in beautiful May Day in New York City and said, well, you know, a thousand million years is a long time, you know?
Why don't you go do it?
Because who knows?
You know?
Who knows what's possible in a thousand million years?
And so my brain waves and REM, every little sound that my body was making was recorded at Bellevue Hospital in New York.
This was two days after Carla and I declared our love for each other.
And so what I often think is that maybe a 100,000,000 from now, you know, somebody flags that record down and I always wonder it because part of what I was thinking in this meditation was about the wonder of love and of being in love and to know it's on those two spacecraft.
Even now, in my whenever I'm down, you know, I'm thinking, and still they move 35,000 miles an hour, leaving our solar system for the great wide open sea of interstellar space.
The thought of space travel, even just the thought of space and infinity, is one of the most exciting things for our imagination.
I think it's a delicious idea.
I like also that this story is about love.
Falling in love has all of the risks of crashing to the ground, but all of the fantastic potential and possibility of taking flight.
