Speaker 0

You are very welcome to the podcast.

Speaker 0

This is one of our special premium exclusive episodes.

Speaker 0

And as we enter the final month of the year, I thought it might be useful to take a look back on some of the episodes that we've been lucky enough to learn from some of the incredible guests that have been on the podcast this year and maybe do a a quick review of at least a few of those episodes.

Speaker 0

Now, of course, for the time constraints of one particular episode, we won't have the ability to go through everything that was covered throughout the course of this year.

Speaker 0

And certainly, this selection isn't to be seen as some type of ranking of the only episodes that were worth having a review over, but rather for time constraints, I just picked out some that had particularly interesting topics and that at the time were well received or people pointed to as being particularly useful.

Speaker 0

So as we go through this, if any of the particular topics are of interest to you, maybe it might prompt a re listen to any of these episodes in their entirety where, of course, you'll get much more context and much more information.

Speaker 0

But also maybe you might have missed some of these or at the time decided not to listen to a particular episode, and it might stand out as one that is useful.

Speaker 0

And if not, it might just serve as something that is able to connect to other episodes that we have put out and that we're gonna discuss here today as a way to try and link some of this information together.

Speaker 0

And so, hopefully, it's a useful way to recap over some concepts that have been covered, things that you may have learned throughout your listening, or maybe are coming across for the first time today.

Speaker 0

But nevertheless, all of that is the goal of this particular episode.

Speaker 0

Of course, you'll have a transcript to go back and recap over these things in text form if you wish.

Speaker 0

For any of the particular episodes that stand out, if you do wanna go and get details on them, then remember you do have the study notes to each of these episodes in your premium dashboard, and you'll be able to go back, get more of the details that I'll be covering here today.

Speaker 0

So I'll put a list of the episodes that we'll talk about here today in the description box.

Speaker 0

And like I said, if any of those do stand out, you can consult either your study notes to recap quickly or maybe even you might put down the full episode to go and relisten if you wish.

Speaker 0

But nevertheless, let's get into it.

Speaker 0

And the first episode that I wanted to start with is one that was with one of the guests that is always a very popular choice given his incredible ability to communicate the research that's out there, but also the high esteem he has held within nutrition science research, and that is professor Christopher Gardner.

Speaker 0

But this particular episode, I think, stood out to a lot of listeners because it pulled back a bit of a veil as to some of the process that went into the dietary guidelines advisory committee that Doctor.

Speaker 0

Gardner was a part of and some of the work that goes on in putting in place some of those recommendations that would then further down the line be go on and be sent to those putting together the dietary guidelines.

Speaker 0

Because sometimes if we listen to enough narratives online, we may just assume that these dietary guidelines are set up by a group of people in a room shut off from everywhere else and doing as they wish, whereas really that open transparent process and the ability for the public to interact with this was quite interesting.

Speaker 0

So, I think one of the central tensions that we have in nutrition science is this gap between evidence generation and evidence translation.

Speaker 0

And in that particular episode with Professor Gardner, we saw this play out, and we were lucky enough that he has a foot in both sides of this, a researcher that's deeply engaged in doing that primary work, but also has this public communication side and also his ability then to interact with policy through his role with the dietary guidelines advisory committee that we were discussing in that episode.

Speaker 0

And so his perspective on much of this was useful for shining a light on public nutrition policy, asking that question of how evidence based is that, what evidence based even means in the context of something that is also shaped by political factors, cultural aspects, economic constraints and so on.

Speaker 0

One of the things that I thought was really useful in that discussion was actually a methodological point that maybe sometimes goes a bit underappreciated, that the dietary guidelines are built primarily from nutritional epidemiology as opposed to randomized controlled trials.

Speaker 0

Now this isn't a flaw that it's sometimes made out to be.

Speaker 0

It's rather a function of practicality because long term diet trials with hard endpoints are incredibly expensive, hard to sustain, they're very ethically complex.

Speaker 0

And for a number of the diet disease questions that we have, they're just basically impossible to get the types of trials that some people clamor for, that it needs to be an RCT to make any decision to be able to say something causes something else.

Speaker 0

But as we've discussed in many of the episodes where Alan and I have gone into some of the aspects around nutrition science broadly and then nutrition epidemiology specifically is that we do have to lean quite heavily on cohort data and infer causality from that.

Speaker 0

But that is actually can be very, very useful and can be very fruitful.

Speaker 0

And for many of the research questions in nutrition is more than appropriate.

Speaker 0

It's the way we should be going about it, hence the utility of particularly prospective cohort study data.

Speaker 0

And one of the things that doctor Gardner brought up was doing that and inferring causality via triangulation triangulation or, as we've talked about in other episodes, these converging lines of evidence.

Speaker 0

And so whilst we are looking essentially when we look at it on the surface, we might be saying we're looking at associations here, but we're also looking at associations that are consistent, that are biologically plausible, that are supported by various mechanisms, that have all the other criteria.
