My name is Ari, and welcome to Sleep Tight Stories.

Speaker 1

Alex wears glasses and needs them to be able to do things properly.

Speaker 1

He puts them on the bathroom counter after a very busy day and gets ready for bed, as the next day will be his first day of school.

Speaker 1

The problems start when the alarms don't go off, and they are late getting up for the first day of school.

Speaker 1

A very silly first day.

Speaker 1

It started the night before.

Speaker 1

Alex forgot his glasses on the bathroom counter because he was tired from a super busy day and wasn't really thinking about where they might be.

Speaker 1

First, he had to go and do all this boring shopping stuff with his mom.

Speaker 1

They went to every possible store in town looking for last minute school supplies, which should have taken an hour but took more because everyone else was doing it too.

Speaker 1

It was really boring and seemed to last at least eight hours or more.

Speaker 1

Then his dad needed help moving heavy things around the garage, which Alex did because his dad said he was strong.

Speaker 1

The pizza bribe might have been a factor too.

Speaker 1

And then Julie.

Speaker 1

Julie had wanted to play basketball for two hours straight because she had decided it might snow soon, and it was hard to dribble in the snow.

Speaker 1

It's still summer, Alex told her.

Speaker 1

Technically, Julie said, and kept dribbling.

Speaker 1

No amount of convincing would change her mind that snowfall was imminent.

Speaker 1

Even though last year, they played basketball on Christmas Day because she got a new basketball.

Speaker 1

So by the time Alex got home, found his school clothes, and laid them out for the morning, he had approximately zero energy left, and his glasses were in the bathroom, and he figured he'd get them in the morning.

Speaker 1

He was asleep before he finished the thought.

Speaker 1

In the morning, nobody's alarm went off, not even dad's, which was the loudest on earth.

Speaker 1

Mom said there must be a ghost in the house doing naughty things.

Speaker 1

Alex believed that she might be right because something had also been hiding his socks all summer.

Speaker 1

How else did they end up under his bed?

Speaker 1

Socks didn't walk there on their own, did they?

Speaker 1

What this meant was that everyone was late, and Alex had to get dressed very fast, faster than he had all summer.

Speaker 1

So he was out of practice, And he still didn't have his glasses on because the bathroom was occupied.

Speaker 1

And then he forgot.

Speaker 1

He practically slurped up his cereal.

Speaker 1

He was only two bites in when his mom called from the hallway that she could hear the brakes on the old school bus squeaking at the end of the street.

Speaker 1

Alex grabbed his backpack and ran.

Speaker 1

Mister Connolly, the bus driver, held the door with his usual enormous smile.

Speaker 1

He also wore a T shirt with a smiley face on it too.

Speaker 1

He said it was his uniform, but Alex wasn't so sure.

Speaker 1

But Mr.

Speaker 1

Connolly also said that driving a bus full of loud kids at seven in the morning was his favorite thing in the world.

Speaker 1

Maybe it was.

Speaker 1

Alex didn't have time to think about it.

Speaker 1

He jumped on with both feet, which is faster, found a seat near the middle, and looked around for Julie.

Speaker 1

No Julie, just a bunch of new kids he didn't know yet.

Speaker 1

Maybe she had a ghost too, he thought, and looked out the window the rest of the way to school.

Speaker 1

The bus doors opened, and everyone spilled out onto the front steps.

Speaker 1

Two kids Alex didn't know yet looked at him strangely, really strangely.

Speaker 1

But he was hungry and still a little tired and mostly thinking about whether there'd be time to get a drink of water before class.

Speaker 1

He found Room 7, sat down, and waited for the day to start.

Speaker 1

It wasn't until Julie arrived that he found out why.

Speaker 1

She stopped in the doorway, looked at him, and got that like super wide eyed holding her breath expression she always got when she was trying very hard not to laugh.

Speaker 1

What?

Speaker 1

Alex said.

Speaker 1

Did you look in the mirror this morning?

Speaker 1

She said trying not to look at him.

Speaker 1

Alex ran a hand through his hair.

Speaker 1

His mom was always telling him to brush it and he always forgot.

Speaker 1

So there was probably something going on up there.

Speaker 1

Maybe there was a big dweeby or something.

Speaker 1

It's not your hair, Julie said.

Speaker 1

Alex looked down.

Speaker 1

He had on two different socks, one white, one with little footballs on it.

Speaker 1

Then he saw that his sweatshirt was on inside out, the seams poking out in every direction, And it was also his sister's, which he could tell because it was light purple and had a unicorn on the front and was about two sizes too small.

Speaker 1

And on his feet were two different sneakers.

Speaker 1

One of them was also purple and had sparkles on it.

Speaker 1

It matched the sweatshirt at least.

Speaker 1

Oh, no, Alex said.

Speaker 1

It's very creative, Julie said, which was what she said when she was trying to be nice and also could not stop smiling.

Speaker 1

I didn't have my glasses.

Speaker 1

I can tell.

Speaker 1

I got dressed really fast.

Speaker 1

I can tell.

Speaker 1

Alex looked at the unicorn on his sweatshirt.

Speaker 1

The unicorn looked back at him.

Speaker 1

Neither of them seemed very happy about the situation.

Speaker 1

Did anyone else notice?

Speaker 1

He asked.

Speaker 1

Julie's expression answered that question without any words.

Speaker 1

Alex had to get to his next class, which meant walking down the hallway, which meant walking past everyone in the school, which was not really all that ideal.

Speaker 1

Alex noticed every glance, every nudge, every pair of kids with their heads together.

Speaker 1

That group near the water fountain, were they looking at him?

Speaker 1

That girl by the lockers who started whispering to her friend right when he walked by.

Speaker 1

Was that about him?

Speaker 1

The two boys near the gym doors who were laughing as he passed?

Speaker 1

Definitely.

Speaker 1

Obviously, 100% it was about him.

Speaker 1

By the time he got to his next class, which required lots of walking in the hallway, Alex had made up his mind that this was going to be the worst first day of school in the history of first days.

Speaker 1

Then Jeff appeared at his elbow.

Speaker 1

Jeff was in his class last year and lived two streets over and had once eaten an entire bag of Halloween candy in one sitting and then tried to deny it, which was pretty impressive and cool and nauseating all at the same time.

Speaker 1

Jeff was pretty easy to read, and right now, he looked genuinely impressed.

Speaker 1

Dude, Jeff said, that outfit.

Speaker 1

I know, Alex said.

Speaker 1

I didn't have my glasses.

Speaker 1

没有。

No.

Speaker 1

I mean, it looks pretty cool, like you planned it.

Speaker 1

Alex stopped walking.

Speaker 1

Marcus and those guys were talking about it.

Speaker 1

They thought you did it on purpose.

Speaker 1

Jeff tilted his head.

Speaker 1

Did you do it on purpose?

Speaker 1

Not exactly.

Speaker 1

Really?

Speaker 1

Jeff looked at the purple sneaker, then the white one, then backed up.

Speaker 1

Well, looks like you did.

Speaker 1

Alex was not sure how he felt about being a potential fashion icon.

Speaker 1

He thought about it the whole bus ride home while everyone around him was talking loudly about their first day.

Speaker 1

He hadn't planned any of it.

Speaker 1

He'd done it by accident because he was tired and in a rush and couldn't find his glasses.

Speaker 1

And now Marcus and those guys thought he was the kind of person who showed up to the first day of school in his sister's Inside Out unicorn sweatshirt on purpose as a choice.

Speaker 1

He was still thinking about it the next morning when three kids showed up to school with mismatched sneakers.

Speaker 1

By the end of the week, there were two inside out shirts, one deliberate mix of odd socks, and a boy in the grade above him wearing what appeared to be his little brother's jacket.

Speaker 1

It went on like that for the rest of the semester.

Speaker 1

Alex never told anyone how it started.

Speaker 1

Julie knew, obviously, because Julie always knew everything, and she thought this was the funniest thing that had ever happened.

Speaker 1

Every time she saw a mismatched outfit in the hallway, she caught Alex's eye and smiled the smile she'd been smiling since that first morning in class.

Speaker 1

He had to admit after a while it was a little bit funny.

Speaker 1

Not that he would ever say that to her.

Speaker 1

She'd want to celebrate with two more hours of basketball.

Speaker 1

And that is the end of our story.

Speaker 1

Good night.

Speaker 1

Sleep Tight.
